STRICTLY FOR THE BIRDS!
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH
8 PM

CLUB BONAFIDE, 212 EAST 52ND STREET, NYC

MJ Territo, vocals; David Pearl, piano; Paul Beaudry, bass; Jarrett Walser, drums.
Special Guest: Wendy Luck, flute

Please join us for an encore performance of “Strictly For The Birds”, an evening of jazz and song inspired by our feathered friends. When I created this set it was strictly for fun, and an amusing way to pay homage to my vocal heroine, Carmen McRae, who put out “Birds of a Feather” in 1958. Now, the recent news that North American birds are disappearing at an alarming rate puts another, more urgent spin on it. So please come for the swinging music, but also for the opportunity to honor the larks and nightingales, the robins and swallows, who create so much pleasure for our ears and eyes. The composers are as varied as the bird life, everyone from Gershwin to Tadd Dameron, Brubeck to Roland Kirk, and of course, The Bird himself.

This charming painting, “16 Birds”, by Jennifer Lommers, gives us a birds-eye view of our everyday birds – cardinals and chickadees, jays and finches. I love the way each black eye has such a firm and particular focus. A big thank you to Jennifer, a jazz lover, for permission to use her work in the publicity for this gig. https://www.jenniferlommers.com/

“Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb.” Seton Hawkins, Hot House Jazz Magazine

Clelia Iruzun-Piano Recital – BMF Classical Music Concert Series 2020

Brazilian Music Foundation  Presents
Clélia Iruzun – Solo Piano Recital

A Tribute to Alberto Nepomuceno with a pinch of Beethoven

BMF Classical Music Concert Series – 2020

March 7, 2020 8PM
The Opera Center of America

330 Seventh Avenue
7th Floor
New York, NY 10001

The London-based pianist Clélia Iruzun has become one of the most exciting musicians to arrive on the international concert scene in recent years. Clélia initially studied at the School of Music at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she won several notable prizes in international competitions before graduating with the Academy’s Recital Diploma.

Clélia subsequently worked with a number of greatly-admired virtuosos, including Nelson Freire, Jacques Klein, Stephen Kovacevich and Fou Ts’Ong, and most particularly with the highly distinguished Brazilian pianist and pedagogue Mercês de Silva Telles in Paris. Notable Brazilian composers, including Francisco Mignone, Arnaldo Rebello and Marlos Nobre, have dedicated works to Clélia, including – most recently – Beethoven Cunha and Alexandre Rachid.

About Alberto Nepomuceno

1864-1920
October 16, 2020 will mark 100 years of
Alberto Nepomuceno’ death

The Brazilian composer and conductor Alberto Nepomuceno played an important role in the emergence of a national Brazilian musical style.

The teacher of Heitor Villa-Lobos, he studied himself with some of Europe’s most famous figures. Nepomuceno was born July 6, 1864, in Fortaleza, in northeast Brazil, where his father was a violin teacher and cathedral musician. The family moved to Recife, where Nepomuceno continued to study violin and piano, and considered a career in law. That brought him into contact with progressive forces that sought, eventually successfully, to overthrow the Brazilian monarchy and to institute republican government. He maintained his musical studies, however, and at the age of just 18, he became the director of the Carlos Gomes Club, Recife’s leading concert venue. A few years later, he began presenting his own songs in concert, many of them Portuguese-language songs even though partisans of Italian opera argued that Portuguese was inappropriate for vocal music. Nepomuceno carried on a vigorous battle in the press with his detractors, moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1885 and teaching music there.

In 1888, despite having to provide for his family after his father’s death, he was able to travel to Europe for further studies. He worked in Italy with Giovanni Sgambati and then, in Germany, with the piano virtuoso Theodor Leschetizky. In Leschetizky’s class, Nepomuceno met and fell in love with Norwegian student Walborg Bang, who had also studied with Grieg. The two married and lived for a time in Grieg’s house in Oslo, where Nepomuceno’s commitment to musical nationalism deepened. In the late 1880s he wrote several Afro-Brazilian dances for piano; these were probably the first instances of classical music that incorporated native Brazilian idioms.

His String Quartet No. 3 of 1890, subtitled “Brasileiro,” went even further in this direction. After returning to Brazil, Nepomuceno taught at the Instituto Nacional de Musica in Rio, where Villa-Lobos was his student, and he promoted Villa-Lobos’ early music. He wrote several operas, including Artemis (1898) and Abul (1904), as well as a Sinfonia in G minor and an orchestral serenade. Later in life, he suffered from poor health and was unable to take up an invitation from Mahler to conduct in Vienna. Nepomuceno died in Rio on October 16, 1920, three days after having given his final concert at the city’s Municipal Theater. Despite its manifest influence, his music remains little known outside Brazil; the String Quartet No. 3 was not even published until 2005.

Music:

Nepomuceno wrote in many genres and styles: art songs in various languages, sacred music, secular choral music, piano pieces, organ pieces, string quartets and other chamber music, operas, lyrical comedies, a symphony, tone poems, three suites for orchestra.

GARY LUCAS HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019 / UPCOMING SHOWS

shem.gif
Gary Lucas Live at the Monk Club Rome Italy with The Niro 12/27/19
photo copyright Mario Rimati

2019 was a very busy year for GARY LUCAS.

His new album with Italian singer The Niro, “The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas” (Esordisco), was just voted Best Album of 2019 in Classic Rock Magazine Italia.

Review from the Downtown Music Gallery Newsletter NYC 1/17/19:

THE NIRO Featuring GARY LUCAS / DAVIDE COMBUSTI / FRANCESCO ARPINO / et al – The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas Songbook (Esordisco 1902; Italy) The Niro features Gary Lucas on lead guitars, Davide Combusti on vocals, Francesco Arpino on keyboards, Phil Spalding on bass and Puccio Panettieri on drums. When Jeff Buckley came to NYC in early 1990’s, he was a relative unknown. He soon played at a historic memorial/tribute concert to his long-estranged father, Tim Buckley and wowed the audience due to amazing singing. Former Capt. Beefheart guitar great, Gary Lucas, began collaborating with Jeff Buckley, writing a dozen songs over a ten month period. Each song turned out to be something special. Young Mr. Buckley soon became the lead singer & rhythm guitarist in Mr. Lucas’s band Gods and Monsters, who got signed to Columbia Records. I caught that version of Gods and Monsters playing at St. Ann’s in March of 1992 and they were extraordinary! Sadly, Mr. Buckley soon left the band to pursue a solo career, taking two of the songs for his first solo effort with “Grace” becoming the title song. In 1997, Mr. Buckley began work on his second solo effort, relocating to Memphis to record. In May of that year, Mr. Buckley decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and soon drowned, ending his life at just 30. In 2002, an album called ’Songs to No One’ was released and included the songs that Buckley and Lucas had recorded as demos. And now, nearly three decades after they were written, Gary Lucas teams up with an Italian rock band known as The Niro to perform all 12 songs that he and Mr. Buckley had written together. This includes five songs which have never appeared on a legit release before now.
Although I recognize the names of 100’s of Italian musicians from jazz and progressive bands, old & new, I hadn’t heard of most of the musicians here. It turns out that their bassist, Phil Spalding, did play with GTR (w/ Steve Howe & Steve Hackett). This disc begins with the five unreleased songs, all of which are superb. The opening song is “No One Must Find You Here” and it begins with Mr. Lucas distinctive swirling guitars. The lead singer here, Davide Combusti, has a strong voice which is similar to Mr. Buckley’s yet it is still his own. And similar to Mr. Buckley’s voice, he sounds like he was influenced by Robert Plant when he sang for Led Zep. It is also you will either really love or not, I am indeed impressed. Both the songs and performances are inspired throughout. The first song ends with an impressive solo guitar section, which is a perfect conclusion to a great opening song. What makes this disc so special is the endlessly inventive guitar playing of Mr. Lucas, inserting nifty flourishes of electric & acoustic guitars with the sly sonic seasoning of the assorted effects that Lucas has long mastered. The feeling that I get when listening to this disc is that is sounds like the long lost album that Mr. Buckley and Mr. Lucas started in 1992 and never really finished. Jeff Buckley was a major player in his own right with many fans around the world. His career was cut short by his early death with just a handful of releases under his belt. Hopefully this great disc will be heard by some of his passionate fans since it is well worth hearing. Quite a marvelous effort from Gary Lucas and The Niro! – Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
CD $15

 Minton’s Playhouse presents
Andy Bey, Mark Whitfield,
record release  JC Hopkins Biggish Band

shem.gif

It’s said that if you truly want to hear a musician’s talent, slow down the tempo. Andy Bey sings some of the slowest tempos today: Listening to him is like looking over a master artist’s shoulder as he meticulously applies paint to a canvas.

JC Hopkins and the Biggish Band have yet another album on the Big Apple horizon, New York Moment, set for release in March of 2020. The title nods to that moment when the fast paced metropolitan life, and all of its challenges, fades away when a great artist hits just the right notes. The songs and the sound of the album encapsulates ‘The ‘New York Experience,’ celebrating a very current, living spirit of jazz and song on display every Saturday night as the Biggish Band play their weekly residency at Minton’s- the birthplace of bebop.

The Biggish Band is a ten piece jazz orchestra that features four dynamic young vocalists who do a palpably stellar job of interpreting Hopkins’ new original compositions. Nico Sarbanes has a sound and look reminiscent of a young Sinatra only he plays trumpet like Clifford Brown. Joy Hanson’s voice is both evocative and ebullient as she sings both ballads and more swinging material effortlessly. Vanisha Gould brings a distinctly soulful sound to the numbers where she is featured and Shawn Whitehorn’s baritone on “Oh, Kitty” is breathtaking. All four are distinctive singers and performers. The group’s tenor saxophonist Drew Vandewinkle, is responsible for most of the arrangements on the album which have been honed by the regularity of their routinely sold out weekly engagements.

At Minton’s, you’re part of the choir. There’s this part in “Moanin'” where—not in the original version but in this one, arranged by JC Hopkins and which his band, JC Hopkins’ Biggish Band, plays—the horn section shouts out, call-and-response style. This night, we get in on it, too. Bum be de BOMP. HEY! Be dop bop be da BOMP. HEY! Bum be de BOMP. HEY! And it’s not anger any longer, but joy.

Tenor Gladness! George Garzone & Jerry Bergonzi Quintet

FRI & SAT • FEB 7 & Feb 8
7 & 9:30 PM

A double-barreled sax attack forms the front line of this exciting Boston-area quintet. Jerry Bergonzi burst on the scene playing with Dave Brubeck in the 1970s and Jazz Times calls him “One of America’s premier living tenor saxophonists.” George Garzone, longtime member of the innovative jazz trio The Fringe while also backing countless pop acts like The Temptations, earned praise from The New Yorker as “a beacon of hard-won virtuosity.” Their ensemble work and solos are sure to amaze.

Rodrigo Nassif Trio

SUN • FEB 9
4 & 6 PM

Hailing from Southern Brazil – territory disputed long ago by Spanish and Portuguese colonialists – guitarist/pianist Rodrigo Nassif is considered the national standard of contemporary instrumental music. His unique style blends those twin influences of his homeland, and critics have called it “jazzmilonga,” mixing jazz, folk, rock and classical elements. His first three solo albums earned critical praise and his first quartet record rocketed to the top of Brazil’s ITunes chart.

Next Weekend: Feb 14 – Feb 16

Sherma Andrews

FRI & SAT • FEB 14 & Feb 15
7 & 9:30 PM

It’s a Valentine’s Day Special with Sherma Andrews and her band, but this is no ordinary Valentine’s Day Show. A graduate and faculty member of Berklee College of Music in Boston who has shared the stage with the likes of Branford Marsalis, Sherma’s perfect pitch, her vast repertoire of Jazz songs and her ability to mesmerize the audience will take you on a romantic journey.

Victor Jones Quartet

SUN • FEB 16
4 & 6 PM

What do jazz legends Stan Getz, Woody Shaw, James Moody, Wynton Marsalis and Michael Petrucciani have in common? Victor Jones has been their drummer, as he has for countless top musicians. Featured on over 200 recordings and film soundtracks, the innovative Victor is not afraid to bring together different styles and sounds. In recent years, he’s led his own group and, as Time Out wrote, “Nothing Jones does is ever boring.”

Following Weekend: Feb 21 – Feb 23

T.S. Monk Sextet

FRI & SAT • FEB 21 & Feb 22
7 & 9:30 PM

You can’t name a jazz drummer with better roots: T.S. Monk’s father was the legendary Thelonious, Art Blakey gave T.S. his first drum set, Max Roach gave him lessons and he began his career as his father’s drummer. His 1997 record “Monk on Monk,” interpreting Thelonious’s unmatched compositions won major awards and his live dates playing them and his own works are always dazzling events.

Kerry Politzer Brazilian Jazz Quartet Tribute to Durval Ferreira

SUN • FEB 23
4 & 6 PM

Bossa Nova would be unthinkable without the contributions of composer/guitarist Durval Ferreira whose beloved melodies were made famous by Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Cannonball Adderley and others. Pianist-composer Kerry Politzer’s Quartet pays tribute to Ferreira in this show as she does on her new album Diagonal that All About Jazz says “perfectly captures the seductive spirit of classic Bossa Nova and the bebop-grounded vibe of honest Samba Jazz.”

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz series gets off to a roaring start on Feb. 13, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents the Highlights In Jazz 47th Anniversary Gala. Featured performers include bassist Jay Leonhart, pianist Tomoko Ohno, drummer Bobby Sanabria, saxophonist Steve Wilson, percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo, violinist/mandolinist Aaron Weinstein, and drummer Vito Lesczak. And, in keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Heading up the gala’s lineup is bassist Jay Leonhart, who has been dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman. The noted critic described Jay as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” A Highlights In Jazz mainstay, Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich and Roy Eldridge, among other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of his audiences.

According to Jack Kleinsinger, Jay Leonhart has probably performed at more Highlights In Jazz concerts than any other musician. “Jay is so flexible: He plays bass, he’s a singer, a song writer, he’s even written as tune about me,” the producer points out with a laugh. Jay is doing two Highlights In Jazz events this year. In addition to the gala, he will appear May 7, in a concert saluting pianist Roger Kellaway.

Pianist Tomoko Ohno is a Highlights In Jazz first-timer. She’s a long-time collaborator with bassist Jay Leonhart, and the twosome have released a duo album. Tomoko began her piano studies at about the age when most kids are just starting to learn the alphabet. She earned a degree in law and politics in her native Japan, before moving to the U.S. to continue her music studies with jazz icons such as Harold Mabern and Rufus Reid. Since then, the pianist has gone on to play with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, and her own ensembles, appearing at some of the world’s most renowned music venues. Tomoko has also released several well-received recordings as a leader.

Calling Bobby Sanabria a drummer is only telling part of the story of this musical powerhouse. The Bronx-born winner of countless awards and an eight-time Grammy nominee, Bobby is also a percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader, conductor, documentary film producer, educator, activist, philanthropist, radio host and more. He’s played and recorded with a litany of jazz, Latin jazz and salsa luminaries such as Max Roach, Mario Bauzá, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Cándido, Larry Harlow, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Henry Threadgill, Charles McPherson, Randy Brecker, Joe Chambers, Jon Lucien and the Mills Brothers, to name just a few.

Alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson is among the most in-demand players on the jazz scene today, with a breath-taking variety of credits. In addition to fronting his own band, just a glance at Steve’s recent calendar reveals gigs with Maria Schneider, Buster Williams, Christian McBride, Rufus Reid and Jay Leonhart, plus studio time with Geoff Keezer. Steve has released eight albums as a leader and appeared on more than 100 more recordings, with the likes of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, Joe Henderson, Charlie Byrd, Billy Childs, Karrin Allyson, Don Byron, James Williams and Mulgrew Miller.

Percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo excels at both jazz and Latin music. He honed his craft around the globe, immersing himself in the music at its source while living in Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, California and New York. Memo has performed and recorded with musical masters including Tito Puente, Moacir Santos, Ivan Lins, Mark Murphy, Jackie & Roy, Dave Valentín, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Angelique Kidjo, Hilton Ruiz, Louie Bellson and the Cuban band Irakere, as well as with his own ensembles. Renowned as an educator as well as a performer, Memo has written books on Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean drumming, and won numerous awards.

It’s easy to discover Aaron Weinstein’s great sense of humor—just check out the recent Jazz Times feature on the self-described “bow-tie rights activist.” But according to jazz luminary Bucky Pizzarelli, the violinist/mandolinist is “a perfect musician.” The legendary guitarist is not the only one who has found a lot to like about Aaron Weinstein. This young string maven has garnered positive notices from Tony Bennett and Regina Carter, and performed with the likes of Les Paul, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Dave Frishberg, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Aaron Weinstein has released several albums as a leader, and recorded with musicians as diverse as Skitch Henderson, Jessica Molaskey, Jim Caruso, Christine Ebersole, Jay Geils and others.

Drummer Vito Lesczak moved to the Big Apple in 1992, and since then has become an indispensable part of the jazz scene. He has appeared on dozens of albums, working with recognized giants of the genre such as Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Mark Murphy, Jay Clayton, Don Braden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini, Bob Cranshaw, Eric Alexander, Larry Goldings, Andy Bey and Bill Charlap. Vito also fronts his own ensembles and has performed in New York and around the globe at major festivals and renowned venues.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests. In fact, the producer claims that at least a quarter of the special guests are a surprise even to him. “Players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage. People sitting in is part of our tradition. It’s exciting for the audience when a big name comes on unexpectedly.”

In addition to the annual opening gala, each season the Highlights In Jazz series includes a concert focusing on the music of one of the departed geniuses of the genre, a salute to a living legend and an all-star jam session bringing together respected jazz journeymen and the best of the up-and-coming young players. The 2020 season is no exception.

Art Baron & The Duke’s Men will be onstage on March 19, 2020, as Highlights In Jazz celebrates the music of the great Duke Ellington. The theme, “Ellington Everlasting,” turns the spotlight on the maestro’s timeless compositions and enduring legacy. Trombonist Art Baron, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins will be on hand, along with a special guest.

May 7, 2020, will bring “A Salute to Roger Kellaway.” Last year’s honoree, guitarist Russell Malone, along with bassist Jay Leonhart, clarinetist/saxophonist Eddie Daniels and guitarist Roni Ben-Hur will gather at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center to pay tribute to pianist Roger Kellaway. Roger, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 1, 2019, is a remarkably versatile musician, having won a Grammy, received an Academy Award nomination, and penned the closing theme of the ground-breaking TV show All in the Family. “Every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares.

“The Return of the Jam Session” wraps up the 48th season on June 4, 2020. “This is a throwback to the old-school, all-star lineup on the bandstand, and combinations of people who have never played together before. It’s not what you’d get elsewhere,” Jack Kleinsinger says. Pianist Ted Rosenthal, saxophonists Peter and Will Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, drummer Victor Lewis, guitarist Frank Vignola and trumpeter Brian Lynch form the core ensemble, and a special guest will also be on hand to join in the fun.

Kleinsinger is proud that his Highlights In Jazz concerts have always attracted an audience of avid listeners. Each season he aims to present multiple facets of jazz: “We’ve done mainstream, Dixieland, swing, bebop; not avant-garde, not far-out, nothing that will scare anybody,” the producer explains. And with the series’ half-century mark just a couple of years away he continues to produce well-received events spotlighting the finest players from across multiple generations.

New York Jazz Stories combines swinging, electrifying music, featuring Bernard Purdie and company along with some highly entertaining stories retold by David Haney. These are real storiestold directly to Haney, transcribed and brought to life with a soundtrack by “Pretty” Purdie and friends.

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” -Cadence Magazine

BERNARD PURDIE, the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie moved to New York in 1960 and soon after recorded his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970, which marked the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has worked with a vast array of artists, such as Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren, and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums.

DAVID HANEY studied composition with Czech American composer Tomas Svoboda and piano with jazz pianist Eddie Wied. As music editor for Cadence Magazine, David interviewed over 60 jazz artists for the Jazz Stories project. The following artists have worked and recorded with David: Roswell Rudd, Julian Priester, John Tchicai, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell, Bud Shank, Wolter Weirbos, Han Bennink, Andrew Cyrille, Bernard Purdie, Marvin Bugulu Smith, Gerry Hemingway, Dylan Van de Schiff, Buell Neidlinger, Dominic Duval, Adam Lane, Michael Bisio, Paul Blaney, Perry Robinson, Johannes Bauer. David Chesky Live
Jazz at Lincoln Center, February 6th

shem.gif

Pianist and Composer David Chesky will be performing all new compositions with his all star revolutionary jazz quintet, Jazz In The New Harmonic.  February 6th at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Featuring: Javon Jackson, tenor sax; Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; Billy Drummond, drums; Peter Washington, bass; and David as composer and pianist.

Jazz in the New Harmonic thrives on both the funky and the cerebral and makes for a consistently exciting listen.
– Alex Henderson, Jazz Inside Magazine

David Chesky has said that for his new quintet, he wanted to take his “harmonic language” (influenced by the classical composers Ives, Webern and Messiaen) and merge it with a strong sense of groove. The pianist/composer certainly achieved that goal with Jazz In The New Harmonic, thanks to his stellar band.
  – Bobby Reed, Downbeat Magazine

Also… on March 18th, The Czech National Symphony will perform David’s Third Piano Concerto live in Prague.

New York City, January 30, 2020 —One of the longest-running musical partnerships in Broadway history, lyricist and director Richard Maltby, Jr. and composer David Shire, will be honored, along with a diverse group of 17 other outstanding artists, at the 35th Annual Bistro Awards on Monday, March 9 at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd St.

As is the Bistro Awards tradition, the evening will feature performances by the winners.

Celebrating more than 50 years of musical accomplishments, the songwriting team is receiving the Bistro Award’s highest honor, the Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award, being presented by ASCAP, the nonprofit performance-rights organization and the Bistro Award’s longtime sponsor.

Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire are best known for such Broadway shows as Baby (seven Tony nominations including Best Musical and Best Score), Big (Tony nomination for Best Score), and two Off-Broadway revues, Starting Here, Starting Now (Grammy nomination for Best Cast Album) and Closer Than Ever (Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical). These last two shows got their start in smaller nightclub venues, the cabaret at Manhattan Theatre Club and Eighty Eight’s, respectively, as did Mr. Maltby’s Ain’t Misbehavin’, which he conceived and directed.

In addition to their collaborative efforts, each has an impressive list of individual accomplishments, Mr. Maltby for his direction and lyric writing, and Mr. Shire who composes for movies, television, and recordings.

The multi-talented Charles Busch has worked as a performer, writer, director, and drag artist in theatre, cabaret, and film. He can be funny and campy in a gown, or as in his recent autobiographical cabaret show, quite touching as himself. In recognition of his many diverse and unique talents, he will be receiving a Bistro for Creative Artistry.

American-born and a West End favorite, Lorna Dallas returned to the cabaret world last year after a 20-year hiatus. A superb artist, she proved that she is still able to wow club audiences. The Bistro Awards Committee is celebrating this top-tier vocalist with a Bistro for Consummate Cabaret Artistry.

For her highly acclaimed work as a singer, songwriter, and musical director, Michele Brourman is being honored with a Bistro Award. Her songs have been performed on television and in films, and recorded by countless cabaret artists including Michael Feinstein, Margaret Whiting, and Cleo Laine, and with Amanda McBroom she’s written songs for eighteen animated features.

This year’s Ira Eaker Special Achievement Award—given to an outstanding performer on the rise and named after Back Stage’s co-founder and first cabaret critic—goes to Jack Bartholet for pushing boundaries and daring to be different. His rich tenor voice, his expert storytelling, and his emotional conviction covering personal, social, and political issues make him a worthy award recipient.

Spencer Day’s winning personality combined with his singing and songwriting talent won audiences over during his extended residency at The Green Room 42. He won over members of the Bistro Awards Committee as well and is being honored as Singer-Songwriter-Recording Artist.

Tribute shows are popular on the cabaret circuit, and three spectacular artists have showed us just how unique and varied their approaches can be. In her Johnny Mercer show, veteran cabaret and stage performer Nancy McGraw plumbed the Mercer lyrics for greater depth and new meaning (Interpretive Artistry), while stage veteran and newcomer to cabaret Elizabeth Ward Land paid homage to Linda Ronstadt, paralleling her own life with that of the multi-award-winning singer and demonstrating a glorious voice and technique (Tribute Show). And Stephanie Trudeau presented a portrait of Mexican star Chavela Vargas, ranchera singer and early feminist. Trudeau’s well-researched narration, her slides giving us a glimpse of Vargas at various stages of her life, and her spirited singing created a compelling (Tribute Show).

One often hears of the spirit of camaraderie to be found in the cabaret community; one set of artists, in particular, has brought that spirit to life. Performing together, Sean HarknessLina Koutrakos, and Marcus Simeone—all previous individual Bistro Award winners—deliver a perfect balance of solos, duets, instrumental, and ensemble numbers, with personalities that harmonize as beautifully as their voices (Musical Group).

In her shows last year, jazz singer and actress Aisha de Haas simply chose songs that have the greatest meaning to her and that she loves to sing. Her stunning musicality and captivating storytelling that intertwined one song with the next has earned her a Bistro for Jazz Artistry.

In her first cabaret show, Like a Perfumed Woman, singer Joanne Halev drew on her career in “fragrance creation” to charm, move, and delight audiences with songs and anecdotes. A most auspicious Debut.

Vocalist Sue Matsuki and musical director-pianist Gregory Toroian have been working together for 25 years. Last year they commemorated Matsuki’s long performance career with a terrific retrospective show, filled with first-rate singing and masterful new arrangements. The Bistro team is now honoring their artistic relationship with a Bistro Award (Collaboration).

Both Gabrielle Stravelli and Gretchen Reinhagen are being recognized for their Recordings. In her CD Pick Up My Pieces, Stravelli delivers irresistible renditions of selections from the Willie Nelson songbook. Reinhagen’s Take It With Me presents an eclectic collection of material, with an exciting and strikingly fresh approach taken for each song.

For the eighth year in a row, Shellen Lubin is directing the Bistro Awards show. Shellen is a theatre director, playwright, songwriter, and vocal- and acting coach. She is at the forefront of attaining parity for women in the arts as co-president of the League of Professional Theatre Women and past president of Women in the Arts & Media Coalition.

The “Bistro Band” consists of Daryl Kojak, pianist and musical director; Ritt Henn on bass; and Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax on drums.

The gala event will be held on Monday, March 9 at 7:00 pm at Gotham Comedy Club. 208 W. 23rd Street. Sherry Eaker, the former longtime Editor-in Chief of Back Stage and the producer of the event since its inception, heads up the Awards Committee, which includes BistroAwards.com critics Gerry GeddesRoy Sander, Robert Windeler, and Mark Dundas Wood. Sander is the award show’s associate producer; Wendy Lane Bailey is the assistant producer.

Tickets range from $80.00 to $350.00. Ticket-buyers in all categories are invited to the “After-Bistros” supper party as guests of the Bistros. For details about the various ticket categories and early-purchase prices, visit www.BistroAwards.com. For additional information, call 917-239-5467.

The BISTRO AWARD has been recognizing, encouraging, nurturing, and educating cabaret, jazz and comedy artists for 35 years through its insightful reviews and annual awards. It is the oldest award of its kind in the industry. It was established by Bob Harrington in 1985 in his “Bistro Bits” column in the trade weekly Back Stage, then under the editorship of Sherry Eaker. For the first few years, the awards were merely listed in Harrington’s column as notable performances he had seen during the calendar year. The first formal presentation of the awards was held in 1990 at Eighty Eight’s, a popular cabaret venue in the West Village. From there, the show moved on to The Ballroom in Chelsea, and then relocated to the Supper Club in the Broadway District, where it remained for many years. This year marks the 14th year at Gotham Comedy Club.

The guidelines that Harrington set up for himself to determine the first winners have become the basic philosophy behind the Bistro Awards, which recognize achievement in a wide variety of categories — from outstanding performances to outstanding contributions by members of the cabaret community. The object is not to choose the “best” of anything of the year, but to recognize and congratulate the accomplishments of those who have done something special. Accordingly, categories can easily be created from year to year as they best fit the year’s distinguished work.

The Bistro’s special honorees have included Judy Collins (2019); André De Shields, Sheila Jordan (2018), Darlene Love (2017), Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross (2016), Ben Vereen (2014); Lainie Kazan, Maurice Hines (2013); Kaye Ballard, Melissa Manchester, Dee Dee Bridgewater (2012); Dionne Warwick, Carol Channing (2011); Mitzi Gaynor, Elaine Stritch (2010); Charles Aznavour, Liza Minnelli (2009); Marilyn Maye (2008); Betty Buckley (2007); Steve Ross (2006); as well as Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, Barbara Cook, and many others.

ASCAP is a professional membership organization of songwriters, composers and music publishers of every kind of music. ASCAP’s mission is to license and promote the music of its members and foreign affiliates, obtain fair compensation for the public performance of their works and to distribute the royalties that it collects based upon those performances. With more than 735,000 members representing more than 11.5 million copyrighted works, ASCAP is the worldwide leader in performance royalties, service and advocacy for songwriters and composers, and the only American performing rights organization owned and governed by its writer and publisher members. www.ascap.com

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note… [He’s] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Ben-Hur – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in Harlem, New York – has released 11 albums as leader or co-leader, with Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” The Star-Ledger of New Jersey summed him up this way: “A deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm.”

Yes, I know it’s sort of like New Yorkers trying to name their favorite Met or Yankee – or even Marx Brother. Still, even though it sounds prejudicial to cite Ted Nash as my favorite composer / arranger / soloist working within the larger aegis of the Jazz at Lincoln Center organization, I still must confess that it’s Mr. Nash’s new works that I look forward to hearing more than anyone else’s. (Though I will also admit that the forthcoming concert of new music inspired by architecture, including new music by Andy Farber, also has me very excited.)  That the iconic actress (not to mention national treasure) Glenn Close is not only performing in Transformation, but she also participates as a co-creator, makes it even more exciting.

Three years ago, Mr. Nash introduced an exceptional new work, The Presidential Suite, in which he extended the possibilities – notably explored by Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus – of combining the spoken word with large-format orchestral jazz. His latest effort goes even further in that direction, not only conceptually – where that work was devoted to the notions of freedom as expressed by world leaders from FDR to JFK to LBJ to Nehru to Churchill to Reagan, this time the guiding philosophy is the concept of change. For Transformation, there will again be readings, carefully curated by Ms. Close (from the writings of Joni Mitchell, Ted Hughes, Conrad Aiken, Edward O. Wilson, Louise Glück, Tony Kushner, Judith Clark, among others), who will be joined by a small, select cast, also including John Cameron Mitchell and Adriane Lenox. But this time, there will also be dance and song, and performances from the celebrated downtown diva and transgender icon Justin Vivan Bond. There also will be what promises to be a moving letter by the composer’s child, Eli Nash, on a highly personal transformative experience.

Between the dependably-sturdy quality of Mr. Nash’s music – he never lacks for brilliant musical ideas, and Presidential Suite, even without the moving spoken portions, was an extended jazz work of rare value. (The highlight, for me at least, was the African and Carribean-inspired setting of the words of Nelson Mandela.) The accompanying actors, singers, dancers, and speakers are more than icing on the cake but an intrinsic part of the author’s message. I expect there will be a great many standing ovations at this concert, so be sure and wear comfortable shoes.

Wynton Marsalis named him a “Jazz star of the future,” and he’s enjoyed a position in Christian McBride’s trio for the last several years. He takes a fresh look at the entire language of Jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban.

Christian Sands Trio featuring Clarence Penn, Drums and Josh Allen, Bass.

Following Weekend: Feb 7 – Feb 9

 Minton’s Playhouse presents
Andy Bey, Mark Whitfield,
record release  JC Hopkins Biggish Band

shem.gif

J. C. Hopkins Biggish Band (Friday and Saturday) Led by the bandleader, songwriter and producer for which it’s named, the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band has always been a friend to vocalists, and in this engagement, the group pays a centenary tribute to Billie Holiday. Among the many singers assembled are Brianna Thomas, Charenee Wade, Charles Turner and Jazzmeia Horn. From 6 to 11 p.m., Minton’s, 206 West 118th Street, Harlem,212-243-2222, mintonsharlem.com. ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

What The Press Is Saying About One Night at Chris’:
Press Release:  The New Dave Wilson Quartet has released their new CD “One Night at Chris’” on Dave Wilson Music! (Release date: 5/27/2019)
One Night at Chris’ is the fifth release of The Dave Wilson Quartet, recorded live at the famous Chris’ Jazz Cafe ‘in Philadelphia, PA in March of 2018. Featuring  Dave Wilson – Tenor and Soprano Saxophones; Kirk Reese – Piano (East Coast Legend); Tony Marino – Acoustic Bass (From the Dave Liebman Group); Dan Monaghan – Drums (Legendary Philadelphia drummer); Wilson’s Spiral (Summit Records-2010) and There Was Never (ZOHOMusic-2016) were critically acclaimed and received significant airplay nationwide, the latter rising to #18 on the Jazz Weekly countdown. The disc contains 10 tracks, four originals by Wilson and six re-arrangements by/of pop/rock favorites including The Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil”, The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood,” Creed’s “My Own Prison, ”Ambrosia’s 1980 hit single, “Biggest Part of Me,” and The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.” Bill Milkowski states in the liner notes of the CD, “savvy adaptations of familiar pop tunes, filtered through a distinctly jazzy prism.” And, from Bill Milkowski. “The crackling intensity of One Night at Chris’ is a testament to what can happen on the bandstand on any given night. And this was a particularly good night indeed.” The recording is a document of one evening of music recorded live, no overdubs, no second takes and with all the nuances, surprises and magic known as Jazz. This past summer the recording was in rotation nationwide, achieved “Chartbound” status (Top 50) on jazz radio, and garnered positive reviews (read further below). It also made WRTI-FM, the leading Jazz Radio Station in Philadelphia, “Jazz Album of the Week”, the week of August 26thOne Night at Chris is perhaps Dave’s greatest work, yet!

Matt Silver for WRTI Jazz Radio in Philadelphia:
Jazz Album of the Week: It All Comes Together for The Dave Wilson Quartet One Night at Chris’s
August 26, 2019. …if the aim is to recreate a sophisticated evening of live jazz in the comfort of your own home, you really can’t beat One Night at Chris’s, the fifth recording from The Dave Wilson Quartet. Recorded before a live audience at Chris’s Jazz Café, Philadelphia’s longstanding jazz club par excellenceOne Night at Chris’s accomplishes all you could want from a live recording: genre-bending covers and bold originals, a fusion of the straight ahead and the slightly more avant-garde, and easy chemistry between a great group of musicians, each of whom are playing at or near their best.

Dick Metcalf (AKA Rotcod Zzaj) /Contemporary Fusion Reviews
Stunning live saxophone jazz The Dave Wilson Quartet – ONE NIGHT AT CHRIS’:  I first reviewed Dave’s stunning live saxophone jazz way back in issue # 106, where he got a “PICK” for “best jazz quartet”… his new album brings you even hipper jazz (if that’s possible)…  Dave’s swingin’ original “Ocean Blues“, is the opener for the album, and the depth of his talent becomes totally clear… I’ve no doubt this tune will be getting MAJOR rotations on jazz stations ’round the globe (for years & years to come)!this new release digs even deeper into the cool that Dave & his players make happen for you… and all the players are just “ON”… if I were on the panels voting for jazz winners, this tune would be nominated & WIN awards.
I give Dave & his players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99 for this great jazz release.

From CHRIS SPECTOR, Editor and Publisher, Midwestrecord.com
“DAVE WILSON QUARTET/One Night at Chris’:  A protean sax man that can lead his crew through anything, he smokes on originals and covers that you wouldn’t think fit the format—but they do.  Lively and crackling, they are turned on by the live Philly audience and make sure they heat up the night properly.  Tasty stuff that makes you wish you were there.”

Vittorio Lo Conte, www.musiczoom.it
“”It was a good night” and for this simple reason the recording of the concert has now been published on disc. Dave Wilson’s quartet is in a state of grace, full of energy, a continuous flow of ideas from one piece to another. Dave Wilson’s quartet is in a state of grace, full of energy, a continuous flow of ideas from one piece to another….The disc works to perfection showing how jazz, made by inspired musicians, can engulf material that comes from the world of pop and current rock without giving up the swing.”

Dodie Miller-Gouldlemonwire.com:
The Dave Wilson Quartet mixes things up on “One Night at Chris’”
“…What is noteworthy is the choice of songs that The Dave Wilson Quartet have covered. All of the cover songs are unexpected. Each offers listeners a bit of insight into the style and perhaps the inspiration of the quartet members…The songs included on “One Night at Chris’” have been captured in one take – – no overdubs, no retakes. The result is a recording that crackles with liveliness and a verve that resonates with the traditions of jazz, even when the group is taking on songs that are from rock and pop traditions….

Jim Hynes, www.makingascene.org
“…This is a great fusion of straight-ahead and exploratory jazz, highly accessible, and packed full of the energy one expects in a live recording.”

 Joe Ross, Roots Music Report:
“Bands occasionally have a terrible night or encounter the dreaded “gig from hell.” On the other hand, well-rehearsed groups also have exceptional nights when everything clicks. The Dave Wilson Quartet experienced the latter when they played Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia in March 2018…While the quartet really spotlights Dave Wilson’s sax, he and Kirk Reese (piano) trade lyrical improvised expressions, with colorful shading and distinctive twists, in this quartet’s very pleasant set of jazz.

Grady Harp, Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewer:
“Dave Wilson, a prominent jazz saxophonist/band leader/composer/educator in the Pennsylvania area, brings his quartet’s recording a sense of immediacy…
Fine sound from fine musicians with the added excitement of a live performance!”

DOUG MACDONALD, Jazz CD News/Reviews: The Audiophile Man:
“…Smooth but still crackling with energy, at ease but still ‘on’ the occasion, Wilson’s mob offers patterns of complexity that dance around the central themes. Playful too –…Clever stuff.”

In 2013, Dave Stryker hit on an album concept based on instrumental interpretations of classic r&b and pop tunes from his high school years in Omaha, Nebraska. The album, entitled Eight Track, proved to be a career breakthrough for the guitarist some three decades after his entry into bigtime jazz as a sideman with organist Jack McDuff. The radio and sales reaction to the first Eight Track CD led to two further volumes – and the result, says Stryker, has been “not only fun, but musically rewarding. Playing these classic melodies from the ’70s has been a great way to connect with people and bring more people to the music, whether they remember the songs or are just discovering them. I enjoy the challenge of finding my way into these tunes by putting my own stamp on them through the arrangements and playing.” “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Pretzel Logic,” “Too High,” “This Guy’s In Love With You” – any and all of these indelible songs could be part of the Stryker sets this week, with special guest Warren Wolf on vibes. (New York City, January 21, 2020) —Lyricist and director Richard Maltby, Jr. and composer David Shire will be honored at the 35th annual Bistro Awards, where they will be receiving the Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award, the Bistro Award’s highest honor, for their more than 50 years of musical accomplishments.

The songwriting team, one of the longest-running musical partnerships in Broadway history, is probably best known for such Broadway shows as Baby (seven Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Score), Big (Tony nomination for Best Score), and two Off-Broadway revues, Starting Here, Starting Now (Grammy nomination for Best Cast Album), and Closer Than Ever (Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical). These two revues got their start in smaller nightclub venues: the cabaret at the Manhattan Theatre Club and Eight Eight’s, respectively.

In addition to their collaborative efforts, each has an impressive list of individual accomplishments.

Mr. Maltby conceived and directed two Tony Award-winning musicals — Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Tony, New York Drama Critics, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk awards and a Tony for Maltby’s direction) and Fosse (Tony, Outer Critics Circle. Drama Desk awards) — as well as Ring of Fire. (Ain’t Misbehavin’ also got its start in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s cabaret.) With Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, he was the co-lyricist on Miss Saigon (Tony nomination for Best Score), co-lyricist on The Pirate Queen, and director of The Story of My Life. He directed and was the co-lyricist on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song & Dance, and was at the helm for Just Jim Dale.

Mr. Shire is an Oscar and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee who has composed prolifically for film, television, and recordings. His feature film scores include Norma Rae (Academy Award), The ConversationAll the President’s MenThe Taking of Pelham 1-2-3ZodiacFarewell, My LovelyThe Hindenburg, Saturday Night Fever (two Grammy Awards), and others. His television scores have earned him five Emmy nominations. His songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, Maureen McGovern, Melissa Manchester, Glenn Campbell, Johnny Mathis, Nancy LaMott, Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright, and numerous others.

Other stage productions by the pair include Take Flight (produced in London, Tokyo, St. Petersburg, and at N.J.’s McCarter Theatre), Dancers at a Waterfall (Pasadena Playhouse, Seattle’s Fifth Avenue Theatre), and Sousatzka (Toronto). They are currently collaborating on new musicals with Adam Gopnik.

The Bistro Awards gala will be held on Monday, March 9 at 7 pm at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd St., produced by Sherry Eaker, who has headed up the event since its inception in 1985.

A full list of winners will be announced at the end of January; tickets will go on sale at that time on the Bistro Awards website: www.BistroAwards.com.

GARY LUCAS HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019 / UPCOMING SHOWS

I caught that version of Gods and Monsters play at St.

CD $15
