A double-barreled sax attack forms the front line of this exciting Boston-area quintet. Jerry Bergonzi burst on the scene playing with Dave Brubeck in the 1970s and Jazz Times calls him “One of America’s premier living tenor saxophonists.” George Garzone, longtime member of the innovative jazz trio The Fringe while also backing countless pop acts like The Temptations, earned praise from The New Yorker as “a beacon of hard-won virtuosity.” Their ensemble work and solos are sure to amaze.

Rodrigo Nassif Trio

SUN • FEB 9
4 & 6 PM

Hailing from Southern Brazil – territory disputed long ago by Spanish and Portuguese colonialists – guitarist/pianist Rodrigo Nassif is considered the national standard of contemporary instrumental music. His unique style blends those twin influences of his homeland, and critics have called it “jazzmilonga,” mixing jazz, folk, rock and classical elements. His first three solo albums earned critical praise and his first quartet record rocketed to the top of Brazil’s ITunes chart.

Grammy nominated band leader JC Hopkins has resumed the programming for the most legendary supper club in the history of jazz: Minton’s Playhouse- Harlem birthplace of bebop. Hopkins’ Biggish Band is at the nucleus of the programming with a weekly Saturday residency that features a ten piece band and an array of stunning up and coming vocalists including Vanisha-Arleen Gould, Joy Hanson, Shawn Whitehorn, King Solomon Hicks and Nico Sarbanes. The Biggish Band, whose sound merges Mingus with Billy May, has been fertile ground for great talent such as the likes of Norah Jones, Jazzmeia Horn, Madeleine Peyroux, Elvis Costello and Brianna Thomas who all have been featured with regularity in the group.

“There’s a bona fide scene going on these days under the revived Minton’s banner in Harlem, and it includes both notable music and good food…”.*– Larry Blumenfeld, Wall Street Journal*

NEW YORK TIMES

J. C. Hopkins Biggish Band (Friday and Saturday) Led by the bandleader, songwriter and producer for which it’s named, the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band has always been a friend to vocalists, and in this engagement, the group pays a centenary tribute to Billie Holiday. Among the many singers assembled are Brianna Thomas, Charenee Wade, Charles Turner and Jazzmeia Horn. From 6 to 11 p.m., Minton’s, 206 West 118th Street, Harlem,212-243-2222, mintonsharlem.com. ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

At Minton’s, you’re part of the choir. There’s this part in “Moanin'” where—not in the original version but in this one, arranged by JC Hopkins and which his band, JC Hopkins’ Biggish Band, plays—the horn section shouts out, call-and-response style. This night, we get in on it, too. Bum be de BOMP. HEY! Be dop bop be da BOMP. HEY! Bum be de BOMP. HEY! And it’s not anger any longer, but joy.

His mastery of improvisation is evident while emphasizing the melody above all else. This is the essence of jazz guitarist JC Stylles’s style. In 2013, Dave Stryker hit on an album concept based on instrumental interpretations of classic r&b and pop tunes from his high school years in Omaha, Nebraska. The album, entitled Eight Track, proved to be a career breakthrough for the guitarist some three decades after his entry into bigtime jazz as a sideman with organist Jack McDuff. The radio and sales reaction to the first Eight Track CD led to two further volumes – and the result, says Stryker, has been “not only fun, but musically rewarding. Playing these classic melodies from the ’70s has been a great way to connect with people and bring more people to the music, whether they remember the songs or are just discovering them. I enjoy the challenge of finding my way into these tunes by putting my own stamp on them through the arrangements and playing.” “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Pretzel Logic,” “Too High,” “This Guy’s In Love With You” – any and all of these indelible songs could be part of the Stryker sets this week, with special guest Warren Wolf on vibes. Mezzrow, Sunday 1/19

Keyboardist, composer and producer Bennett Paster’s June, 2019 release Indivisible has garnered critical reviews in the press and has been played around the country on college and public radio stations.

Paster’s trio, with bassist Ed Howard and drummer Tim Horner, return to Mezzrow in NYC on Sunday, January 19th (MLK Day Weekend) with sets at 7:30 and 9pm.  Expect to hear a broad-based selection of standards, jazz standards, originals and even some Stevie Wonder and Beatles songs performed in a swinging while conversational, classic jazz piano trio context.  Featuring an expressive 6’2” Steinway A piano, Mezzrow is NYC’s premier intimate piano listening room, so be sure to make reservations in advance.

“A very fine keyboardist and pianist, Bennett Paster grows by leaps and bounds with every project.  On his new CD Indivisible, he doesn’t synthesize his influences, but rather turns every composition into his own private vision of blues, mainstream jazz, funk, New Orleans and beyond… He displays bebop sensibilities while reserving the best of his immense talents for a sense of teamwork.”    (MGN, Hot House Magazine, June 2019)

Having played with a who’s-who of jazz giants (Milt Jackson, Horace Silver and Roy Hargrove among them) and on Arturo Sandoval’s Grammy-winning album, Willie’s own group over the past 20 years specializes in hard bop “finger-poppin’,” he told Downbeat, “That’s what I was raised in. I breathe it.”

Featuring Eddie Henderson, trumpet, Justin Robinson, alto, Rick Germanson, piano and Gerald Cannon, bass.

Beyond Jazz is a monthly workshop co-led by Rick Savage, Joe Vincent Tranchina and Steve Rubin.   The sessions are an exploration of ensemble playing via improvisation.

Different artists have participated including Jeff Ciampa, Michael D’Agostino, Ian Smit, Kevin Brown, Neil Alexander, Dave Smith, Bob Rosen, Billy Stein, Rick Savage, Steve Rubin, Joe Vincent Tranchina and Ed Littman, to name a few.
Over the years some of these players have brought this improvisational approach to the Seligmann Center in Sugar Loaf and the Warwick Center for The Performing Arts.

There have been performances with a fine artist working with a large canvas , dancers, spoken word and slide shows, each invoking an in the moment reaction by the players.

For this performance, Ian Smit, Michael D’Agostino, Rick Savage, Joe Vincent Tranchina, Kevin Brown and Steve Rubin will provide guitar & effects, percussion and drums, trumpet, flugelhorn, electric keyboards, acoustic bass, drums and more percussion.

They’ve chosen groupings of images which will be projected onto the screen at the community center.

The music created , at that moment is influenced by the collective reaction of the musicians to the images

Will’s New York Nite Life

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!”
Directed by Daniel Fish
Circle in the Square
1633 Broadway
Through Sunday January 19

shem.gif

When I first started hearing about this new country-fied production of Oklahoma!, my little pea brain flashed to Sinatra’s late-life gag introduction of a song by Rodgers and Hart as “Roy Rogers and William S. Hart,” citing two famous movie cowboys rather than the legendary Broadway composers. I was only able to get tickets very late in the run – which is a lot better than nothing – and wanted to see if what I had been hearing about the production was true, that it rewrites Oklahoma! as if it had been composed by Roy Acuff and Merle Haggard rather than Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Now I can tell you that it does and it doesn’t – while the overall tone of the show is certainly more country-and-western than traditional Broadway, director Daniel Fish and musical director Nathan Koci still keep the essential bones of the show and the songs. For instance, the opener “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” is still a waltz, in fact, it’s waltz-ier than ever.

The idea of a country-and-western Oklahoma! goes back at least to 1970, when TV host Ed Sullivan presented the opening scene with Jeanie C. Riley (of “Harper Valley PTA” fame) as “Laurey” and the legendary Minnie Pearl as “Aunt Eller” on his long-running variety show. If Mr. Fish were to really rewrite the show, he might think to provide Aunt Eller (the excellent Mary Testa) with a solo song of her own, seeing as she’s the first of those matronly pillars of wisdom that re-appear across the entire history of R&H shows, as in Carousel, South Pacific (sort of), The King & I, Cinderella, and especially The Sound of Music; there’s always a sagacious middle aged woman telling young lovers (individually or in pairs) to climb ev’ry mountain. (I also regret that “Gertie Cummings” doesn’t get a song, especially since Mallory Portnoy steals almost every scene with a clarion-like laugh that’s more sexy than obnoxious, as it’s supposed to be.)

Mssr’s. Fish and Koci take considerable liberties with the “Dream Ballet,” in which the theme (known lyrically as “Out of My Dreams”) rendered via a solo electric guitar, heavy on the distortions, clearly modelled on Jimi Hendrix playing the national anthem at Woodstock – however, yes, it’s still in 3/4. The most egregious mistake is that they stick the intermission right in the middle of the dream ballet, as if they didn’t trust the audience’s attention span, or their bladders. In this re-imagining, “Jud Fry” (Patrick Vail) is a full-on psychopath. In “Poor Jud is Daid,” “Curly” (Damon Daunno) seems to be seducing Jud, rather than bunko-ing him as is customary, into committing suicide, and here, Jud’s solo, “Lonely Room” becomes his chilling equivalent of Sweeney Todd’s “Epiphany.”

This version has been described as “darker,” but for most of the stage time, it’s funnier than ever, especially with “Will Parker” played by James Davis as a deadpan comic cowboy who wouldn’t be out of place in a Broadway version of Blazing Saddles. At times it seems like a parody, Oklahoma! as if enacted by the cast of Hee-Haw (with Junior Samples as Will and Gunilla Hutton as Ado Annie), but is all the more enjoyable for that. Which makes the abrupt ending – no spoiler alert here – seem more out-of-place than ever. This is the only part where they fundamentally change the show as conceived by Dick & Ockie (even without actually changing the dialogue), and it’s completely unnecessary; it seems to me that they could have done the actual ending (Curly and Jud in a knife fight, and the drunken heavy winds up falling on his own shiv) and made it disturbing enough. But that’s one of the more important aspects of a classic: you aren’t allowed to take any aspect of it for granted.

A final note about the first thing you see when you enter the Circle in the Square, which is that the walls of this theater-in-the-almost-round are festooned with dozens of decorative rifles and shootin’ irons. Perhaps next, the NRA will commission Mr. Fish to devise a second amendment re-do of Annie Get Your Gun; apparently this is the first-ever right-to-carry production of Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Afro Latin Jazz Alliance presents

JAZZ ACROSS THE AMERICAS: ARGENTINA – Tribute to Lalo Schifrin

Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

GUEST ARTISTS

Pablo Aslan & Sofia Rei

Leo Genovese, Juancho Herrera, Franco Pinna, Gabriel Senanes

The language of Jazz and Tango, of Africa, Europe, and Argentina are irrevocably intertwined in the genius of Lalo Schifrin. His stamp on American culture, from Hollywood to the concert stage and beyond is irrefutable. Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra celebrate Schifrin’s visionary “Gillespiana Suite” and reflect on its impact on contemporary masters like Guillermo Klein, Emilio Sollam and many others. Special guest curators and performers for the show are Argentinian artists Pablo Aslan and Sofia Rei.

Gillespiana Suite – written by Lalo in the early days of his career for Dizzy Gillespie – will be performed in its entirety for the first time in over 25 years, conducted by Pablo Aslan. Sofia Rei’s contribution features contemporary takes on the work of legendary Argentinian folkloric artists Leda Valladares and Cuchi Leguizamon, all performed in the distinctive style of Arturo and the ALJO.

“This celebration of the Maestro and of his beloved Argentina is exactly what the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra was created for.”

– Arturo O’Farrill

Artistic Director of the ALJO

Imagine receiving an invitation to a gala featuring John Coltrane, Sigmund Freud, and Faust. Bruce Forman’s “The Red Guitar” is all that and more. It draws on Forman’s decades of experience as a formidable jazz guitarist and his considerable skill as a storyteller and teacher, producing a work that is greater than the sum of its dazzling parts. Enlisting the full power of the jazz idiom and integrating it with seasoned and provocative story-telling, he confronts the dilemma of artistic obsession face-to-face—by creating a work of art that simultaneously explores and demonstrates the hold that music has over its most ardent followers. The Red Guitar: Do you play it…or does it play you?

Vanity Fair calls her “The new voice of jazz” and you haven’t heard anything until you’ve heard Camille Bertault. Perhaps jazz’s first internet sensation, Camille’s videos of her uncanny scatting her own French lyrics to standards like John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” went viral five years ago.  Since then, she’s cut two albums, incorporating her early training in classical and opera plus pop influences with a creative purity that demands to be heard.

Mauricio de Souza & Bossa Brasil

SUN • JAN 12
4 & 6 PM

Born in Brasilia where he began his musical studies, Mauricio de Souza began studying under legendary drummer Joe Morello as a teenager and, after graduating college, moved to New Jersey to continue that relationship. Today, de Souza is an in-demand sideman and a leader of both straight-ahead jazz Brazilian combos. His latest recording, the album Five Roads, has garnered wide acclaim for his ability to, as one critic wrote, “keep the sauces simmering.”

Next Weekend: Jan 17 – 19

Willie Jones III Quintet

FRI & SAT • JAN 17 & 18
7 & 9:30 PM

Fresh off touring with Wynton Marsalis’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Willie Jones III brings his swinging straight ahead quintet to Tarrytown.

Valtinho Anastacio’s “World”

Brazilian World Percussion & Voice

SUN • JAN 19
4 & 6 PM

Inspired by the Sao Paolo streets on which he grew up, Valtinho Anastacio mastered the congas, the pandeiro, the berimbau, the agogos, the abes, the caixas and more. Combining his magical percussion with a voice often inspired by the sounds of nature – called by Elis Regina “one of the most important voices in Brazil” — Valtinho creates infinite tones and textures evoking the wild energy of his homeland. Don’t miss this amazing show.

Valtinho Anastácio’s World features Hector Martignon, piano, Eduardo Belo, bass, Paul Ricci, guitar, Victor Jones, drums, and Valtinho Anastácio, percussion & voice.

Following Weekend: Jan 24 – 26

Joey Alexander Trio

FRI & SAT • JAN 24 & 25
7 & 9:30 PM

On the eve of his first major label album release (Warna on Verve Records), 16-year-old piano genius Joey Alexander comes to Tarrytown to wow the audience as he’s been doing for seven years. The youngest ever jazz Grammy nominee, Joey has been profiled on 60 Minutes, the NY Times front page, won readers’ polls in Downbeat and Jazz Times and recently headlined at Carnegie Hall. Come see why.

Nanny Assis Group
feat. Daniel Assis

SUN • JAN 26
4 & 6 PM

Nanny Assis and his vocalist son Daniel embody the joy and happiness of Brazil’s Bahia region, where Nanny was born. A drummer who branched out to become a multi-instrumentalist and composer, his talents and performing charisma made him a top attraction since relocating to New York 20 years ago. Nanny has collaborated with countless jazz luminaries, been named Brazil’s Vocalist of the Year and packed the city’s top clubs.

MJ Featured In Hot House Magazine

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed.
– Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.”
—Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!

Keyboardist, composer and producer Bennett Paster’s June, 2019 release Indivisible has garnered critical reviews in the press and has been played around the country on college and public radio stations.

Paster’s trio, with bassist Ed Howard and drummer Joe Strasser, return to Mezzrow in NYC on Sunday, January 19th (MLK Day Weekend) with sets at 7:30 and 9pm.

Richard Wyands, Consummate Accompanist and
Impeccable Jazz Pianist, Is Dead at 91

By NATE CHINEN  OCT 1, 2019

Richard Wyands, a pianist whose articulate touch and sensitive phrasing made him a first-tier accompanist over a career spanning 75 years, died on Sept. 25 in New York. He was 91.

Among the former associates to pay him homage was guitarist-bandleader Peter Bernstein, who saluted Wyands on social media as “one of the greatest jazz pianists ever to play.”

“His virtuosity was in his incredibly beautiful touch and total control of sound,” continued Bernstein, who worked often with Wyands in Jimmy Cobb’s Mob. Playing with him, Bernstein continued, “was a unique experience in the way he made you hear yourself and everything around you with greater clarity.”

Wyands brought that complementary skillset to hundreds of albums, some of them recognized now as classics. He played on the 1960 Roy Haynes Trio album Just Us, and on Roland Kirk’s 1961 salvo We Free Kings. He appears on more than a few albums by guitarist Kenny Burrell, including the 1971 gem God Bless the Child. And he is the most crucial accompanist behind vocalist Etta Jones on two notable early-1960s dates for Prestige, including Don’t Go to Strangers, which has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Though he evidently harbored no grand ambitions as a bandleader, Wyands made a small armload of albums, most often in a trio format. His first was Then, Here and Now, a 1978 effort for the Storyville label; his most recent was Lady of the Lavender Mist, for the Japanese label Venus.

Somewhere in the middle of that timeline, you’ll find Reunited and Get Out of Town, made with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, a rhythm team now all but synonymous with pianist Bill Charlap. The assertive yet effortless quality of Wyands’ playing in this band makes it easy to understand why any horn player or singer would want him percolating behind them.

Richard Francis Wyands was born on July 2, 1928 in Oakland, Calif., and raised in nearby Berkeley. He began playing the piano in grade school, at 7 or 8, taking lessons from a neighborhood teacher. (He was friendly with her kids.) He studied the classical repertory first, before taking a shine to jazz pianists like Fats Waller.

He was playing around the Bay Area by his teenage years, and enrolled at San Francisco State College, where he earned his degree in music in 1950. For a time, he was the house pianist at the Black Hawk, where he backed an array of star attractions passing through town — and often played opposite fearsome pianists like Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, who informed his style along with earlier influences, like Teddy Wilson and Nat King Cole.

Wyands relocated to Canada for a stretch in the mid-‘50s, becoming a fixture on the scene in Ottawa, where he worked with singers including Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae. He followed McRae to New York in ’58, and eventually found work with everyone from bassist Charles Mingus to saxophonist Gigi Gryce to Burrell, one of his most productive associations.

In the last couple of years, Wyands led his trio in a weekly residency at the 75 Club in Lower Manhattan, usually working with two longtime associates, bassist Lisle Atkinson and drummer Leroy Williams. And he made a point of keeping his ears open.

“I have to listen to everybody,” he told Eugene Holley, Jr. last year, in a feature for Hot House magazine. “I try to understand everybody’s playing.”

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz series gets off to a roaring start on Feb. 13, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents the Highlights In Jazz 47th Anniversary Gala. Featured performers include bassist Jay Leonhart, pianist Tomoko Ohno, drummer Bobby Sanabria, saxophonist Steve Wilson, percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo, violinist/mandolinist Aaron Weinstein, and drummer Vito Lesczak. And, in keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Heading up the gala’s lineup is bassist Jay Leonhart, who has been dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman. The noted critic described Jay as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” A Highlights In Jazz mainstay, Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich and Roy Eldridge, among other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of his audiences.

According to Jack Kleinsinger, Jay Leonhart has probably performed at more Highlights In Jazz concerts than any other musician. “Jay is so flexible: He plays bass, he’s a singer, a song writer, he’s even written as tune about me,” the producer points out with a laugh. Jay is doing two Highlights In Jazz events this year. In addition to the gala, he will appear May 7, in a concert saluting pianist Roger Kellaway.

Pianist Tomoko Ohno is a Highlights In Jazz first-timer. She’s a long-time collaborator with bassist Jay Leonhart, and the twosome have released a duo album. Tomoko began her piano studies at about the age when most kids are just starting to learn the alphabet. She earned a degree in law and politics in her native Japan, before moving to the U.S. to continue her music studies with jazz icons such as Harold Mabern and Rufus Reid. Since then, the pianist has gone on to play with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, and her own ensembles, appearing at some of the world’s most renowned music venues. Tomoko has also released several well-received recordings as a leader.

Calling Bobby Sanabria a drummer is only telling part of the story of this musical powerhouse. The Bronx-born winner of countless awards and an eight-time Grammy nominee, Bobby is also a percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader, conductor, documentary film producer, educator, activist, philanthropist, radio host and more. He’s played and recorded with a litany of jazz, Latin jazz and salsa luminaries such as Max Roach, Mario Bauzá, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Cándido, Larry Harlow, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Henry Threadgill, Charles McPherson, Randy Brecker, Joe Chambers, Jon Lucien and the Mills Brothers, to name just a few.

Alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson is among the most in-demand players on the jazz scene today, with a breath-taking variety of credits. In addition to fronting his own band, just a glance at Steve’s recent calendar reveals gigs with Maria Schneider, Buster Williams, Christian McBride, Rufus Reid and Jay Leonhart, plus studio time with Geoff Keezer. Steve has released eight albums as a leader and appeared on more than 100 more recordings, with the likes of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, Joe Henderson, Charlie Byrd, Billy Childs, Karrin Allyson, Don Byron, James Williams and Mulgrew Miller.

Percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo excels at both jazz and Latin music. He honed his craft around the globe, immersing himself in the music at its source while living in Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, California and New York. Memo has performed and recorded with musical masters including Tito Puente, Moacir Santos, Ivan Lins, Mark Murphy, Jackie & Roy, Dave Valentín, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Angelique Kidjo, Hilton Ruiz, Louie Bellson and the Cuban band Irakere, as well as with his own ensembles. Renowned as an educator as well as a performer, Memo has written books on Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean drumming, and won numerous awards.

It’s easy to discover Aaron Weinstein’s great sense of humor—just check out the recent Jazz Times feature on the self-described “bow-tie rights activist.” But according to jazz luminary Bucky Pizzarelli, the violinist/mandolinist is “a perfect musician.” The legendary guitarist is not the only one who has found a lot to like about Aaron Weinstein. This young string maven has garnered positive notices from Tony Bennett and Regina Carter, and performed with the likes of Les Paul, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Dave Frishberg, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Aaron Weinstein has released several albums as a leader, and recorded with musicians as diverse as Skitch Henderson, Jessica Molaskey, Jim Caruso, Christine Ebersole, Jay Geils and others.

Drummer Vito Lesczak moved to the Big Apple in 1992, and since then has become an indispensable part of the jazz scene. He has appeared on dozens of albums, working with recognized giants of the genre such as Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Mark Murphy, Jay Clayton, Don Braden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini, Bob Cranshaw, Eric Alexander, Larry Goldings, Andy Bey and Bill Charlap. Vito also fronts his own ensembles and has performed in New York and around the globe at major festivals and renowned venues.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests. In fact, the producer claims that at least a quarter of the special guests are a surprise even to him. “Players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage. People sitting in is part of our tradition. It’s exciting for the audience when a big name comes on unexpectedly.”

In addition to the annual opening gala, each season the Highlights In Jazz series includes a concert focusing on the music of one of the departed geniuses of the genre, a salute to a living legend and an all-star jam session bringing together respected jazz journeymen and the best of the up-and-coming young players. The 2020 season is no exception.

Art Baron & The Duke’s Men will be onstage on March 19, 2020, as Highlights In Jazz celebrates the music of the great Duke Ellington. The theme, “Ellington Everlasting,” turns the spotlight on the maestro’s timeless compositions and enduring legacy. Trombonist Art Baron, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins will be on hand, along with a special guest.

May 7, 2020, will bring “A Salute to Roger Kellaway.” Last year’s honoree, guitarist Russell Malone, along with bassist Jay Leonhart, clarinetist/saxophonist Eddie Daniels and guitarist Roni Ben-Hur will gather at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center to pay tribute to pianist Roger Kellaway. Roger, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 1, 2019, is a remarkably versatile musician, having won a Grammy, received an Academy Award nomination, and penned the closing theme of the ground-breaking TV show All in the Family. “Every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares.

“The Return of the Jam Session” wraps up the 48th season on June 4, 2020. “This is a throwback to the old-school, all-star lineup on the bandstand, and combinations of people who have never played together before. It’s not what you’d get elsewhere,” Jack Kleinsinger says. Pianist Ted Rosenthal, saxophonists Peter and Will Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, drummer Victor Lewis, guitarist Frank Vignola and trumpeter Brian Lynch form the core ensemble, and a special guest will also be on hand to join in the fun.

Kleinsinger is proud that his Highlights In Jazz concerts have always attracted an audience of avid listeners. Each season he aims to present multiple facets of jazz: “We’ve done mainstream, Dixieland, swing, bebop; not avant-garde, not far-out, nothing that will scare anybody,” the producer explains. And with the series’ half-century mark just a couple of years away he continues to produce well-received events spotlighting the finest players from across multiple generations.

Pharoah Sanders Quartet Live at the Iridium

Whenever I experience the music of Pharoah Sanders – and I’ve been going to see him at The Iridium for over 15 years at least – I’m always reminded that many of the preconceptions that we have regarding the evolution of jazz are completely wrong. I have it in my head that, in the modern era at least, that every new school of jazz was more abstract and less audience-friendly that that which preceded it.

Tickets & Info

It’s a beguiling album from beginning to end; the music is strong and unsentimental, but at the same time gentle and deeply empathetic. It’s quite magical.  – Ed Hazell,Point of Departure

If it’s philosophical music, it’s far from dull music. There’s life, laughter, landscape and an affirmative lightness that is hard to resist. – Brian Morton, Jazz Journal

… the two created these fragile and delicate moments, rich in musicality and feeling … Overall it is an incision without moments of emptiness, which involves the listener from beginning to end, of two musicians in a state of grace who had something real to say to each other and made it public. – Vittori LoConte, musiczoom.it

Conjure by Karl Berger and Jason Kao Hwang stands as a masterful combination of both jazz and classical styling which makes for an incredible listening experience.  – Vincent Teneriello, kuci.org

This other meeting, between Berger and Hwang, shows two musicians who interact without dilute their identities, celebrating free music and giving carte blanche to the deepest human emotions.  – Antonio Branco, Jazz.pt

Wonderfully spontaneous unpredictable creativity…Karl’s piano/vibes and Jason’s violin/viola will summon spirits from your inner depths and take you on a journey like you’ve never been on before. – Rotcod Zzaj, Contemporary Fusion

Conjure..features eight improvised pieces that show their constantly openness to the moment… The opener, “Prophecy”, confirms that their voices make sense together. Berger launches the journey with a low-toned piano pedal, angular musings, and some caustic chordal movements. For its part, Hwang’s melodic narrative is as dramatic as it should be, and we can almost sense the tears suggested by his violin cries. – Felipe Freitas, Jazz Trails

Listening to Hwang coax amazing sounds by plucking his strings on “Vanishing Roots” or Berger’s unpredictable piano chords and vibraphone notes may be unlike anything you’ve heard from a duo. – Jim Hines, makingascene.org

Subtle, beautiful, haunting, masterful and delicately commanding… summoning lyrical and sensitive music, finding profundity in restraint.  Squidco.com

With the kind of simpatico that comes from a relationship of long standing, those that want to hear sounds from some corner of the cosmos will enjoy what these two can come up with all on their own.  – Chris Spector, midwestrecord.com

The two artists seem perfectly at ease with each others directional inclinations and they add some unexpected twists and turns to the path that they spontaneously create, leading the music in a direction that is unpredictable to both the listener or the musicians… – Ralph A.Miriello  notesonjazz.blogspot.com

Blood isn’t an unscripted free jazz recording but rather an uncompromising, five-act creation comprised of twenty-eight scenes. Vic Juris, Coolly Impeccable Guitarist Fluent in a Range of Modern Styles, Has Died at 66

By Nate Chinen

Vic Juris, a guitarist whose stylistic breadth, technical fluency and selfless poise made him a first-rate sideman for more than 40 years, as well as an influential educator and a perennially underrated solo artist, died early this morning at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J. He was 66.

His wife, the jazz singer Kate Baker, said the cause was complications from cancer.

Juris came of age alongside a generation of guitarists broadly conversant in the jazz language, but also deeply informed by rock, soul, and myriad strains of classical music. Within that broadminded cohort, he commanded high esteem. “There is none better,” the late John Abercrombie said of him. Another notable peer, Pat Metheny, once attested that “Vic Juris has been a total monster ever since we both hit the scene at around the same time in the 70’s, playing great no matter what the setting.”

Dave Stryker, who for the last 20 years has lived across the street from Juris in West Orange, N.J., characterizes his friend as “a musician’s musician.” Speaking this afternoon from the Juris household, Stryker added: “I don’t know anybody that doesn’t completely give it up for Vic, considering him as one of the masters.”

But Juris’ sterling reputation among fellow musicians was disproportionate to his low-key public profile, despite a trail of solo albums stretching back to the late ‘70s. A sideman to saxophonist Richie Cole during that decade and beyond, he also recorded with Hammond B-3 organists Don Patterson and Jimmy Smith, bassists Steve LaSpina and Gary Peacock, and keyboardist Peggy Stern. He’s most widely known for a long affiliation with saxophonist, flutist and NEA Jazz Master David Liebman; they began recording together in 1991.

“He should have been more famous,” Liebman tells WBGO. “He played unbelievably. He was not a showy guy, as a person or as a musician. And he was so eclectic — he could do so many things, from left to right, musically. When somebody’s that eclectic, you can come out as lesser in the eyes of the public, when it really is more.”

For his part, Juris took pride in the versatility that was a stock in trade. “I wanted to be a sideman and play in as many situations as possible,” he told Claire Daly, in a 2017 interview for DownBeat. “I still do. I find that to be rewarding. The drawback is that you don’t build a profile as a leader. You’re always below the radar and that’s basically what happened with me.”

At the same time, Juris held a well-regarded residency at the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village, usually playing with organist Brian Charette and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. And he put out some two dozen albums, more than half of them on the Dutch label SteepleChase.

His most recent, from 2019, is Two Guitars; the title is a nod to his use of both a steel-string acoustic and a hollowbody electric. The album, which features an ace trio with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Adam Nussbaum, is also a showcase for Juris’ compositions, including an Abercrombie tribute titled “To John” and the harmonically sophisticated opening track, “Cerise.”

Victor Edward Jurusz was born on Sept. 26, 1953 in Jersey City, N.J., and raised in Parsippany. His father, Victor Sr., was a Port Authority police officer, and his mother, Claire, worked as an executive secretary.

He began playing guitar in 1963, at age 10, and got his first electric guitar as a gift the following Christmas. The timing was right for him to cut his teeth on The Beatles, but he also studied privately with jazz guitarist and educator Ed Berg. (He later studied and befriended another jazz guitar guru, Pat Martino, and struck up a correspondence with pianist and pedagogue Charlie Banacos.)

“Beyond his initial lessons, he was pretty much self-taught,” Stryker marvels. “He got that experience early on, playing with the real masters of the music. He came about his harmony, which was pretty deep, on his own. He could play the most difficult kind of music — like the stuff David Liebman would write, with these big, fat, stacked chords — and figure out how to voice them on the guitar.”

Liebman had a longstanding pledge to do an album of Juris’ compositions. He says that a recording date had been set for February. “Last time I had contact with him was about the rehearsal, and the tunes we were going to do,” Liebman notes, recalling that one of those was a piece called “Romulan Ale.” Juris recorded that tune, whose title alludes to Star Trek, on a 2010 trio album called Omega is the Alpha. Here is footage of him performing it with Liebman’s band around the same time, at the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, Penn.

Juris was also a committed educator, teaching at the New School, Rutgers and SUNY Purchase. He published method books and instructional videos, and instructed several generations of younger guitarists.

Baker, who survives Juris along with his sister, Denise Martish, says that over the last several months — since word of his cancer was made public, through a GoFundMe campaign — a steady stream of his students and peers have come to West Orange to pay their respects. “I think his legacy is also with how many guitarists he’s trained and mentored, from his heart,” she says. “Vic would do duos with them. He would have them come to the house. He wanted to really pass down the information.”

Baker also discloses that Juris has two albums releasing in the spring. One, due out on SteepleChase in March, will feature Anderson on bass, Gary Versace on keyboards and John Riley on drums.

The other will be a duets album, featuring her vocals and his guitar.

Following Weekend: Jan 17 – 19

Willie Jones III Quintet

FRI & SAT • JAN 17 & 18
7 & 9:30 PM

Fresh off touring with Wynton Marsalis’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Willie Jones III brings his swinging straight ahead quintet to Tarrytown.

The band’s newest crop of stellar talent include Joy Hanson who has a voice that reminds one of a young Ella Fitzgerald, Vanisha-Arleen Gould whose soulful sound has drawn comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse and Shawn Whitehorn who has a gorgeous baritone voice and immaculate stage presence.
