Whether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton, Michael Rabinowitz’s contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael’s improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument.

“Listening to a bassoon sing jazz is a distinctive pleasure. After hearing Bennie Maupin and Yusef Lateef tackle this instrument, I have a certain appreciation and expectation of the bassoon’s power and persuasion. Michael Rabinowitz appreciates and exploits the acoustic characteristics of the bassoon and this makes his “Uncharted Waters” CD a joy to my ears.”

Spawned from the richly diverse adventurous music scene on New York’s Lower East Side in 1977, the String Trio of New York (S3NY) delights, surprises and inspires audiences around the world with its unique improvisations and compositions for acoustic violin, guitar and bass. The group is one of the most active and visible of the original late 20th century ensembles playing new music in the jazz tradition. A true pioneer of the genre-busting, unclassifiable music that blossomed in New York in the 1980s, S3NY plowed the path for future explorers, combining jazz, western classical, world-music and experimental forms into a cohesive palette of sonic textures and adventurous energy that opened the ears and minds of the public for what eventually became known as New York’s Downtown Sound.

shem.gif
ABOUT EACH ARTIST

Chuño is an experimental music duo originated by two Argentinian, New York City-based musicians, percussionist Franco Pinna and singer Sofia Tosello. Chuño es a genuinely on-of-a-kind, unlike anything the listener is likely to have heard before. At it’s heart is an original instrument, the arpa legüera, that Pinna created four years ago in search of new sounds for his drum set. It is a percussion string instrument that uses the bombo legüero, a traditional South American drum, as a resonating chamber, creating a sound reminiscent of both harp and drum, but with its own transcendent qualities. On the other hand Sofia Tosello brings the warmth, the storytelling and the passionate interpretation of the lyrics. Pinna and Tosello have just released an album on April 16th, 2018 called Chuño on April 16th, 2018.

OSCAR FELDMAN Known for his splendid tonalities and melodically outstanding charts, the Argentinian native demonstrates his superb skills on alto, tenor and soprano saxes, while employing a wide range of Panamerican references, from straight ahead to tango to candombe to samba to mambo. Feldman studied at Berklee College of music where he graduated cum laude in 1995 with a Major in Professional Music.
Oscar has recorded and toured internationally with notable artists such as guitar legend Al Di Meola, Grammy winner and top producer/arranger Eumir Deodato, Jeff Tain Watts, Avantango, Paquito D’Rivera’s
United Nations Orchestra, Alex Acuna at prestigious venues such as the Opera Vienna House, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Town Hall in New York, Park La Villette in Paris, the Blue Note as well as many International Jazz Festivals in Europe, the Americas and Africa.

FERNANDO GARCIA RODAS GUASABARA PUERTO RICO
“Puerto Rico native García organically blends folkloric Bomba rhythms and Latin jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. His simpático crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García’s third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO music.”
– Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

“Fernando has put together a very focused and cohesive recording, surrounded by a talented group of young musicians. The music is rhythmically inventive and extremely smart, built on the rock solid drumming by the leader. In all a very well rounded album, which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did.”
– Miguel Zenón

HAKON SKOGSTAD
As a performer of tango music I have always been fascinated by the unique sound of the bandoneón and how the instrument is used in solo arrangements and compositions. Performing together with bandoneón players and writing for the instrument as an arranger/composer has inspired me to adapt the technique and the interpretational aspects into my own piano playing. I wanted to see if I could incorporate the multilayered, flowing and improvisational manner of playing – constantly changing focus between the bass, chords, and melodic structures, rather than trying to do all at once as often as possible, like an orchestral reduction. This approach can be heard throughout the album and is taken to the extreme in El Marne, which is a bandoneón arrangement adapted for the piano. The melting point is the tribute composition “Tristezas de un doble S” where Piazzolla’s «Alfred Arnold» bandoneon is replaced by «Steinway and Sons».

NEW CARACAS
Inspired by the rhythms that flow across Latin America, New Caracas was founded in 2012 by Luis D’Elias, PJ Duffy, Brendan Pajak, and Evan Waaramaa in 2012 and defines itself as a collective of musicians, that craft a vast soundscape of melodies and sounds drawn from the South American experience, its folklore, and its traditions. For their debut album under their former name Luis D’Elias Ensemble, the band was nominated to the Independent Music Awards, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and the Premios Pepsi Music in Venezuela. Currently they are working on their new album after being completely funded through IndieGogo in 2017. The release will showcase the talents of singers of all over North and South America telling stories of immigration and the Latin American Diaspora. With an eclectic backdrop of musicians from the NYC area, New Caracas imbues their music with the unique vibrance and energy of a multicultural cast of artists under one vision: to expand latin music to new frontiers and create a community based around the sounds and colors of América Latina.

A song about finding meaning to the word ‘Hope’, “Más Allá Del Sol”is the first single released from New Caracas’ upcoming album, NOS, and features Colombian singer-songwriter, Alea. It was brought to life with the participation of Grammy winning producer Emilio Miler and Latin Grammy winning mixer Darío Peñaloza and features a 10 piece orchestra that blends classical sounds with vibrant latin rhythms, showcasing Luis D’Elias’ musical storytelling as performed by a multicultural cast of NYC based musicians.

ROGER DAVIDSON
Prayer for Tomorrow (Oraçao para Amanhã)

The album is the first by Davidson’s new trio, with stellar Brazilian musicians based in New York. The first-call rhythm section of Eduardo Belo (bass) and Adriano Santos (drums) is joined by another mainstay of the New York Brazilian jazz community of artists, harmonica and vibraphone extraordinaire Hendrik Meurkens, as featured soloist.

These recordings came about after the trio played several engagements in and around New York City. Recorded over several nights at NYCs famed Zinc Bar, a haven for Brazilian jazz, the musicians rejoice in each of Roger’s original compositions.

Roger Davidson explains:
“This album is a collection of my most recent compositions, recorded with my trio at one of my favorite venues in New York City. I am constantly inspired by the music of Brazil, and by having the chance to play with some of the best Brazilian musicians. This new crop of compositions are inspired directly by my travels in Brazil —and by my beloved Brazilian wife, Nilcelia Davidson.”

Jazz Notes Intel: By Dan Ouellette
Guitarist Russell Malone Gets Saluted; Dafnis Prieto Big Band Latin Marvel; Roots Flair With Marcia Ball and Irresistible Trio Pianism by Django Bates

shem.gif

By Dan Ouellette, Senior Editor ZEALnyc, June 8, 2018

Maestro guitarist Russell Malone thanks six-string elder Kenny Burrell for giving him invaluable advice thirty years ago to advance his career. “Kenny told me to always be consistent,” the 54-year-old Malone said in a phone conversation from his New Jersey home shortly after returning from headlining a doubleheader of jazz festivals in Jacksonville, FL and Atlanta. “You’ve got to always play well and remember that people fly or drive to pay money to see you. For me the most important thing is to consistently reach the listener. A lot of musicians start out working to gain the respect of their peers, but after a while they try to live up to someone else’s idea of what jazz music is. That’s a recipe for disaster.”

Throughout his career, Malone’s true-to-myself wisdom has been lauded and appropriately is celebrated this year by Jack Kleinsinger, a former New York assistant attorney general who became a vital jazz impresario presenting his unique four-show Highlights in Jazz concert series. In its 46th season, it’s the longest-running jazz concert series in the city. Launched in 1973, he has produced more than 300 concerts with such classic jazz stars as Zoot Sims, Roy Haynes, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Dave Brubeck, Billy Taylor, Woody Herman and Billy Higgins, among many others.

Each year for the season’s finale, Kleinsinger pays tribute to an alive-and-well artist. This year on Thursday, June 21 at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the honor goes to Malone. “Russell is the youngest artist ever saluted,” he said, running down a long list of former honorees, including his very first, Lionel Hampton, and Malone’s mentor Burrell. “When I was beginning to do concerts, I was thinking of how tired I was going to memorials for jazz stars who had passed away. That’s when I started doing the salutes, bringing together different styles across the generations.”

Diane Marino is an unusually unique talent… great pianist, vocalist and arranger”
– Les Davis-Real jazz-Sirius/XM Radio

“Marino plays swinging piano, is an accomplished arranger and sings up a storm, – she’s one of the best I’ve heard in the past several years!” Ric Bang-JazzScan

“Diane Marino is a most worthwhile singer/pianist/arranger. Some of the most delicate and carefully laid back singing you’ll ever hear – Ms. Marino’s piano/vocal just can’t be bettered”  Dan Singer-Singer’s Singers

“Soul Serenade” “is the title of my newest CD project. Although not exactly a “tribute” album, it is more of a celebration of the music made popular by the great vocalist, Gloria Lynne.

While performing on a recent gig with drummer Vince Ector (Gloria’s drummer for 15 years), I sang “I’m Glad There Is You”, and he reminded me it was one of Gloria’s signature songs. So, I began to research more of Gloria’s work and was instantly mesmerized by her voice, style and emotion. Additionally, her choice of material was instantly appealing to me. I tend to look for songs that are “beyond the norm” of the Great American Songbook repertoire. The songs Gloria Lynne recorded during her career stand alone in their originality and uniqueness. Her performances of these particular tunes move me every time I hear them.

As with my previous CD’s, I always learn a tune and then work with it at the piano, making it an extension of what I’m hearing and feeling from the lyric and melody. I should note that I had never heard any of these 14 tunes before I was introduced to them by the wonderful Gloria Lynne recordings. My “concepts” for these 14 tunes came about after much study, deliberation and changes!

I wanted to step away from the piano for this project in order to collaborate with someone else’s ideas that could influence the way I might want to sing a particular song. I feel that when you accompany yourself on piano the two elements are inseparable and it was time to do a project in a different way.

I asked my dear friend Brad Cole to take my concepts and write the arrangements and orchestrations as well as to play piano/keyboards on this project. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted to do with each of these songs. I think we’ve come up with a fresh approach to this material that Gloria Lynne’s recordings influenced me to explore and ultimately record!”

Love… Diane

TIME AFTER TIME

Cassandra Wilson’s WebSite

She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80s, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled “Blue Light ‘Til Dawn” which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenged the supremacy of the American Standard songbook.

Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways jazz, vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D’Or, The Edison Music Award, and a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail. She also performed one of the leading roles in Wynton Marsalis’ “Blood on the Fields,” the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize.

In 2015, Cassandra Wilson joined forces with the prestigious label, Legacy, a subsidiary of Sony Music. Her latest project, Coming Forth By Day, was released on the 100th anniversary of Billie Holiday’s birth- April 7, 2015.

LONNIE PLAXICO (Bassist, Composer, Producer)

Lonnie Plaxico’s WebSite

The middle child in a family of musicians, Chicago-born Lonnie Plaxico inherited a gift for music that was discovered and nurtured early. By the age of twelve he had taught himself to play the electric bass, and he was soon venturing into Chicago’s music scene, renowned for its mix of jazz, funk and blues. It was not long before the young musician made his first recording, featuring his family’s band. At the age of just fourteen, having already performed alongside several prominent Chicago jazz figures, Lonnie Plaxico turned professional, playing the electric and acoustic bass with equal facility.

In 1980 Plaxico moved to New York and soon began to appear with such artists as Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and Wynton Marsalis. His first extended tenure was with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers: between1983 and 1986, lonnie performed on twelve of Blakey’s albums, including the Grammy Award-winning, New York Scene. In 1986 he joined Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, continuing with that group until 1993. Presently, Plaxico is the musical director and featured bassist for Cassandra Wilson; their critically acclaimed and award-winning collaboration has now spanned over 20 years.

Plaxico’s recording and performance catalog is equally impressive for its caliber, depth and diversity. He has appeared with such luminaries as Sonny Sitt, Junior Cook, David Murray, Alice Coltrane, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Sample, Abbey Lincoln, and Dizzy Gillespie. Just as noteworthy are his performances with younger artists — among them Steve Coleman, Rachelle Farrell and Dianne Reeves. Lonnie has also recorded with Lonnie Liston Smith, Ravi Coltrane and Barbara Dennerlein, as well as his Grammy-winning collaborations with Art Blakey and Cassandra Wilson. He has also recorded five critically acclaimed albums as leader, and has just finished a tour with the legendary Buddy Guy.

MARVIN SEWELL (Guitarist, Composer)

Marvin Sewell’s WebSite

Marvin Sewell was born and raised in Chicago. He learned how to play the guitar by hanging out with many Chicago basement bands. At that time, Marvin was exposed to a variety of styles of music such as: Blues, Gospel, and Soul. Rock, and Fusion. At the same time, he played in a Catholic church in a guitar band playing acoustic guitar. A few years later he became interested in Jazz. In high school, he started playing with the Malcolm X Community College Big Band. From there he started playing with many famous local Chicago musicians such as Von Freeman, Ramsey Lewis, Billy Branch, Jody Christian, Big Time Sarah, and Barbara La Shore, He attended Roosevelt University in Chicago where he studied Composition.

Marvin moved to New York in 1990. His very first tour in New York was with an Algerian Pop music band. Since in New York, Marvin has played with various bands of different styles of music, ranging from acoustic to electric music. In 1992, Marvin made his first major Jazz band when he began working with Jack Dejohnette’s Special Edition. At that same time, he was playing with Jazz cellist Diedre Murray and Jazz Bassist Fred Hopkins. The following year he recorded albums with Jack Dejohnette, Diedre Murray, and Gary Thomas. That same year he played in Hannibal Peterson’s composition African Portraits, an opera in which he played blues slide guitar in collaboration with the St. Louis Symphony, New Music Symphony, and the Westchester Symphony Orchestra. Marvin has performed and recorded with David Sandborn, Marcus Miller, Jorge Sylvester, Greg Osby, Joe Lovano, George Benson, Sekou Sanidiata, Peter Herborn, and a host of many other esteemed musicians.

In 1995, he began playing with Cassandra Wilson with whom he played a variety of string instruments for six years. On Cassandra Wilson’s CD, Traveling Miles, Marvin co wrote the song, Right Here, Right Now with Cassandra, and was the music director of her band for over a year. In the summer of 2001, Marvin went on tour with Sekou Sandiata along with Ani Difranco. While out on tour, Marvin got a chance to share the stage with Ani Difranco.

In 2002 Marvin did a tour of eastern Africa with the Newsome, Sewell, and Harris Trio. The group performed in Kenya, Malawi, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius. Today, Marvin spends most of his time writing music for his own band, The Marvin Sewell Group. He has performed all over New York City and is preparing to put out his debut recording under his own name.

Fragility: An Exploration of Polyrhythms

Susie Ibarra and the DreamTime Ensemble in collaboration with Souleymane Badolo

Friday, June 8, 7:30 PM
Saturday, June 9, 7:30 PM

Fragility: An Exploration of Polyrhythms is the world premiere of drummer/composer Susie Ibarra’s new immersive performance. Using polyrhythms as a model for human interdependence, Ibarra captures the concept of fragility through music, exploring the subtle intersections that affect relationships. Ibarra conceives the musical structure of Fragility as a ‘game piece’ in which the rules require performers to take turns conducting action: shifting roles and perspectives in live experimentation.

Drawing on deep knowledge of Asian and jazz percussive traditions, Ibarra leads audiences on a journey into a mesmerizing musical environment. An ensemble of seven musicians creates multi-layered, expansive sonic textures. Dancer Souleymane Badolo interacts with custom-built motion capture technology in which the dancer’s movements trigger recorded sounds to create a live rhythmic composition. The performance of Fragility takes place in the Asia Society Museum’s Starr Gallery with musicians at the center, audience surrounding them, and all enveloped by the multi-channel surround sound installation.

Concept and Music Compositions: Susie Ibarra
Choreography: Souleymane Badolo
Sound Engineering and Sound Design: Justin Frye
Stage Design and Lighting: Clifton Taylor
Interactive Systems Design: Tommy Martinez

DreamTime Ensemble: Claudia Acuña, vocals; Jennifer Choi, violin; Yves Dharamraj, cello; Justin Frye, bass; Yuka C. Honda, electronics; Susie Ibarra, drumset and percussion; and Jake Landau, guitar and keyboard

MJ Featured In Hot House Magazine

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed. – Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s new CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.” —Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, becausethese standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!   –C. Michael Bailey

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights In Jazz closes its 46thseason with a tribute to lauded jazz guitarist Russell Malone. A mainstay on the Manhattan music scene since the 1980s, as well as a regular at international festivals and concert halls, Russell has attracted critical and fan recognition for his work as an accomplished leader and in-demand sideman.

The versatile guitarist has been praised for his tender touch on ballads, as well as for revealing a smokin’ side that made him right at home in organ bands fronted by icons like Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff.

“Russell is so versatile, and we have such great people joining him, this is going to be quite a concert. We salute a living jazz artist every year. I believe in doing it while they’re alive and it means something, that’s part of our tradition,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares.

The unique Highlights In Jazz series thrives on bringing together musicians with a mix of styles from across the generations, and welcoming the sometimes unexpected results of their collaborations. Kleinsinger loves the freshness and spontaneity guaranteed by this approach: “There are always two concerts: The one I envision and the one that actually takes place,” Jack reveals with a laugh. “Different kinds of players sound wonderful together,” he continues, pointing to the concert’s two saxophonists as examples: “Jimmy Heath is a bopper and Houston Person swings and has that big tone. They’ll find common ground and it will be great.”

The guest of honor, guitarist Russell Malone, has released more than a dozen albums as a leader, including 2017’s well-received Time for the Dancers. Critics have called him “the gifted torch-bearer” of jazz guitar, and cited him for as an exemplary player of “irrepressible charisma” and “underrated artistry.” Russell has enjoyed long associations with musicians as varied as Jimmy Smith, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall, appearing on three of her Grammy nominated albums. He has frequently collaborated with pianist Benny Green, and shared stages and/or studios with Roy Hargrove, Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller, Jack McDuff, Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, and more than one Marsalis brother.

Saxophonist George Coleman

No tenor saxophonist better epitomizes the robust muscularity of that heavyweight instrument of jazz expression than George Coleman.  With brilliant technique and a deeply soulful tone firmly rooted in his hometown of Memphis, George has performed with many of jazz’ most legendary figures and influenced countless saxophonists during his half century in music.

Saxophonist Houston Person is among the most in-demand tenor players on the New York jazz scene. He has a special affinity with singers, honed during his two decades-long association with vocalist Etta Jones. Houston has released dozens of albums as a leader, alongside greats such as Ron Carter, Steve Nelson, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Joey DeFrancesco, Bernard Purdie, Les McCann, Benny Green, Grady Tate, Curtis Fuller, and other notables.

Drummer Lewis Nash called his first album as a leader Rhythm is My Business, and he certainly got that right! The Phoenix-born drummer started the New York phase of his career in the band of the redoubtable Betty Carter, followed by stints with Ron Carter, Branford Marsalis, and J.J. Johnson. Lewis stepped into the fabled George Adams/Don Pullen quartet (following the late Dannie Richmond), and also played with Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Clark Terry, and Milt Jackson. Besides releasing dozens of recordings as a leader, Lewis is featured on more than 300 albums as a sideman with Joe Lovano, Nancy Wilson, Bette Midler, and Kenny Rankin, among scores of others.

Drummer Willie Jones III was barely into his teens when he began gigging professionally. He received a scholarship to Cal Arts, where he studied with Albert “Tootie” Heath; in another early milestone, Willie was a semi-finalist in the respected Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition. He also won the John Coltrane Young Artist Competition with his band Black Note. Willie has played with Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, Arturo Sandoval, and Roy Hargrove, as well as Kurt Elling, Michael Brecker, Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock and others. He continues to record as a leader, compose, produce, and be an invaluable member of the current jazz scene.

Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt is among the most prominent players on the scene today, having appeared with the Mingus Big Band, Vincent Herring, Ravi Coltrane, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Frank Wess, John Hicks, Bobby Short, Lonnie Plaxico and more. A perennial on “best trumpeter” lists from numerous publications and associations, Jeremy has released close to 20 albums as a leader, including 2017’s critically acclaimed Make Noise!

Guitarist Gene Bertoncini is sometimes referred to as “the Segovia of jazz,” the New Yorkermagazine has sung his praises, and Gene’s concerts and recordings are regularly spotted on the top 10 lists of publications from the Washington Postto Jazzizmagazine. Versatile enough to play with the Tonight Show band and the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, Gene’s jazz credentials comprise collaborations with greats including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, and Nancy Wilson.

Vibraphonist Steve Nelson has been singled out by jazz journalist John Murph as “one of today’s most revered jazz vibraphonists.” He’s built his sterling reputation on his contributions to bands fronted by Kenny Barron, David “Fathead” Newman, Dave Holland, Renee Rosnes, Grant Green, Johnny Griffin, Jackie McLean and Mulgrew Miller. Steve has been described as a “reluctant bandleader,” explaining that he learns so much as a sideman that he’s not always eager to step out in front. But when Steve does put a band together, he goes for the best: On his well-reviewed 2017 CD, Brothers Under the Sun, Steve leads an all-star quartet featuring pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash

Bassist Luke Sellick is still in his mid-20s, but has already become the bassist of choice for Russell Malone, Johnny O’Neal, Jimmy Greene, and others. The Juilliard alumnus was mentored by the great Ron Carter and has played with Orrin Evans, Carl Allen, and Renee Rosnes. Luke’s 2017 debut album,Alchemist, features nine original compositions, performed with some of New York’s best players.

As is the tradition, a special surprise guest will be on hand, the player’s identity a closely held secret till show time. In past years, scheduled guests have occasionally showed up with guests of their own in tow, to universal delight. “Sometimes we get lucky,” Jack Kleinsinger muses. “Buddy Rich was our scheduled guest at one of the concerts, and he asked if he could bring a friend. Lo and behold, it was Stan Getz.” The veteran producer still sounds a little bit amazed by that occurrence, all these years later.

Keep your fingers crossed for surprises–who knows what could happen to top off the smashing 46thseason of Highlights In Jazz!

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

TIME AFTER TIME

CASSANDRA WILSON is an American jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi. Described by critic Gary Giddins as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the playing field” by incorporating blues, country and folk music into her work.

download

Ms. Baum brings a remarkable balance of fluidity and restless creativity to her work as a post-bop flutist and composer. She plays with a range of ensembles, but it’s hard to beat “Short Stories”…”

Preview for the upcoming album
‘Hommage to Grämlis’

Hello everyone!

I hope you’re all doing well?

Since June started I found some more hours to be able to work on my next album ‘Hommage to Grämlis’ and it’s been very exciting! Right now I’m working on an a cappella version of ‘Heaven’, one of my absolute favorites by the great Sir Duke Ellington! It reminds me through so many facets of how I experienced my wonderful, idyllic and so truly loved childhood in the midst of pure mother nature on the farm Grämlis I grew up in gorgeous Switzerland. I hope that all of you can visit this place one day….

I wanted to invite you all to my concert in NYC on Sunday June 10th 7pm at Rockwood Music Hall.

I really hope that you can make it since we’ll be presenting some of my new tunes at this gig.

FEATURING: BOB MERRILL, BILLY BUSS AND TREE PALMEDO – TRUMPETS

TBA – BASS
STEVE JOHNS – DRUMS

Charismatic trumpeter and vocalist Bob Merrill captures the spirit of the greatest horn legends of Jazz, beginning with pioneers Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke, then Swing Era stylists Bunny Berigan and Roy Eldridge. Bebop innovators Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis are followed by post-bop masters Clifford Brown, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. With a stellar NYC rhythm section, the former Cambridge native’s engaging tribute includes historical details, amusing anecdotes and even one of Gillespie’s upturned-bell trumpets, and Merrill is joined by young Boston-are trumpeters Billy Buss and Tree Palmedo.

Bob Merrill is noted for his engaging vocal style and talents as a trumpeter, pianist, arranger and bandleader. His music has been heard around the world at clubs and in concerts, in films and on television, and on recordings as a sideman and leader.

Merrill was born and raised in Manhattan, and as a teenager studied with William Vacchiano, principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, and bebop legend Red Rodney. In college, Bob led the Harvard Jazz Band, and founded the Jazz at the Pudding concert series at the Hasty Pudding Club. He also attended New England Conservatory, studying with acclaimed pianist Jaki Byard and was a longtime member of Byard’s Apollo Stompers Big Band.

Returning to New York in 1986, Merrill opened Hip Pocket Recording Studios, and produced music for commercials and recordings by artists such as Patti LaBelle, Sting, Art Garfunkel, and Peter, Paul and Mary. He produced three digital reissues of classic albums by his father-in-law, famed pianist and composer Joe Bushkin, and together they appeared at concerts and jazz festivals around the country.

In 1997, Bob was featured on the American Movie Classics channel leading the AMC Orchestra in the television series Gotta Dance! He has appeared in concerts with Peter Nero and the Philadelphia Pops, the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, and shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis and the Steve Miller Band. Over the years, Merrill has released numerous albums a leader of his own all-star ensembles, including Catch As Catch Can, Got A Bran’ New Suit, and Cheerin’ Up the Universe in 2015, garnering him Top Ten honors in the Jazz Vocal and Flugelhorn categories of the Annual Jazz Station Awards.

Last year, Bob released Tell Me Your Troubles: Songs by Joe Bushkin, a centennial tribute to his late father-in-law. Featuring a dazzling array of guest artists, it was selected as an editor’s pick by Downbeat Magazine.

DreamTime Ensemble: Claudia Acuña, vocals; Jennifer Choi, violin; Yves Dharamraj, cello; Justin Frye, bass; Yuka C. Honda, electronics; Susie Ibarra, drumset and percussion; and Jake Landau, guitar and keyboard

Rare is the occasion when an artist arrives on the scene who fundamentally reawakens your understanding not just of music but world history, common cultures, and shared values. Dongfeng Liu is this very type of artist. He is a maestro composer, arranger, jazz pianist and educator who draws upon musical influences from his native China, and fuses them with American jazz harmonies with Caribbean rhythms. China Caribe uncovers those buried pages of history in which Chinese immigrants journeyed to the Americas as early as the 1860s. In fact, Havana boasted the largest Chinese population in the Western hemisphere during this period.

Liu’s CD celebrates and dramatizes these cultural cross currents. On this album, we hear what happens when cultures collide – a new sound, a unique aesthetic is born. You haven’t heard anything like China Caribe. I hadn’t. In a word, Liu’s music is peerless. These eight original compositions and arrangements are special and sparkling, meditative and magnificent.

The opening notes of In the Clouds are performed on the morin khuur, a Mongolian instrument that is also called a horsehead fiddle, in soundclips by the Hanggai Band, one of the leading folkloric Rock groups from Mongolia, and friends of Liu’s. This sound alone foreshadows what’s to come: We begin in the East, but by the time John Benitez’s round electric bass enters, we’re not quite back in the West but somewhere in between – a place that China Caribe will inhabit throughout each musical chapter.

Min Xiaofen plays the melody elegantly on the ruan, a traditional Chinese string instrument similar to a lute, with a round body and four strings. This piece is inspired by the Mongolian throat singing tradition called khoomei in which a vocalist sings two notes at once. In this tune, there is the sustained bass and melody. At the same time, the floating chords, taken together, form the second note. Indeed, the piece is masterfully conceived and arranged.
Mirror Image features Liu with well-placed piano lines, Roberto Quintero on percussion, and Francis Benitez on drums. The melody of the beginning A section is adroitly inverted into a 6/8 feel in the B section. Liu suggests that when we gaze at ourselves, look more closely, because there is more going on than meets the eye. Similarly, when you encounter others, don’t just look for differences, but identify the shared values that we hold dear. We’re more alike than apart.

Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon takes the melody from an ancient and folkloric Chinese song. Min Xiaofen takes the lead on the pipa, another ancient lute-style stringed instrument. She is followed by Liu performing the melody on the piano. There is a trenchant Afro-Cuban beat in 6/8 that creates an undulating, propulsive feeling until the timba 4/4 rhythm takes over during the solo section, in which Liu unleashes an incandescent improvisation that builds with block chords and dynamic phrasing.

I Know You starts with the intrepid hand percussion of Roberto Quintero which blends seamlessly into John Benitez’s syncopated bass groove. Indeed, the prelude and A section are in the odd-meter of 5/4, which transitions to 7/4 in the B section. “Latin music makes people want to dance,” says Liu. “But this piece isn’t suitable for dancing,” he observes. He notes that this is one of his favorite songs because the musicians have to interlock over an uneven rhythm, and ultimately have to learn about each other in the process. This piece is unadulterated virtuosity.

Arcadia is pure fusion. From the heavy synthesizer introduction and forceful back beat of the drums to piano painting and finally the melody on pipa. Liu chose the name of the song because it sounded like that of another world, the feeling he tries to evoke in this piece. Ultimately, the music is harmonious and suggests that it’s possible for people to make music (and live together) in a peaceful manner. Here too, Liu’s piano solo is pitch perfect, inhabiting the empty space, yet not clustering the piece with a barrage of sounds. The maestro uses the stillness, the calmness as an instrument itself which serves to dramatize the melody.

Coltrane’s Tune is Liu’s tribute to John Coltrane, whom he has long admired. The harmony is from Coltrane’s classic “Countdown.” Liu admits that the song is also inspired by Miles Davis’ “Tune Up.” Indeed, you can hear shades of both these vintage jazz songs. Of course, Liu renders them with novelty and originality. This tune is pure, uninhibited jazz trio.

Fisherman’s Song At Dusk comes from an ancient Chinese folkloric song. It refers to the performance of the Chinese Jiangnan Water Village during the sunset, as the fishing boats are sailing in the distance. Liu took this melody and recast it with several parts, from the cascading piano to the drums accenting the beats at the same time. Feifei Yang plays the melody on the erhu, a traditional Chinese bowed string instrument.

The album concludes with Moophy which is inspired by an instrument known as the “Moog Sub Phatty,” which Liu thoroughly enjoys playing. The A section has a terrific 7/4 groove that transforms into a 5/4 feel in the B section. The back-and-forth between Liu on the piano and Benitez on bass is the stuff of not just virtuosity but friendship. These two have forged a bond across idioms, styles, and cultures.

Admittedly, to say that this album is Chinese and Cuban can be reductionist. There are fifty-six ethnic groups in China alone who speak different languages and perform their own styles of music. Cuban and Afro-Caribbean music is certainly not without variety either. But this album will launch any listener onto a journey, even safari of discovery. It has been a pleasure producing Liu’s album with John Benitez and Doug Davis. We thoroughly enjoyed the adventure of fusing cultures and civilizations.

“I wanted to contribute a new voice, my voice to the conversation,” said Liu. Indeed, Liu has given us something to hold dear as we face the future. No matter the shifting sands of time and fate, we’re in a better place when we look for commonality. Liu has enriched and advanced that common language of all mankind – music.

Bob Arthurs New CD
Trumpeter Bob Arthurs infuses Eastern European melodies with the spirit of jazz on his innovative new CD, Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads

Jazz roots meet Ukrainian folk traditions on an exciting new
release from trumpet master Bob Arthurs

shem.gif
On Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads (Blue Griffin), jazz trumpeter Bob Arthurs and guitarist Steve LaMattina deliver an engaging and excitingly original offering that successfully—and charmingly—melds two genres: jazz and music from Ukraine’s folkloric tradition.

The album is the brainchild of producer Irena Portenko, a long-time fan of trumpeter Bob Arthurs’ playing, composing, and uniquely personal approach to jazz. Irena, an accomplished and acclaimed classical pianist and educator, suggested that Arthurs should record some popular Ukrainian tunes in a jazz style. To get the project rolling, Portenko provided the trumpeter with a list of tunes from the country’s folk tradition along with other works by Ukrainian composers. Bob put his head together with a frequent collaborator, guitarist Steve LaMattina, and the twosome developed the 11 brilliant arrangements displayed here. Not only do their visionary arrangements respect the tunes’ ethnic origins, they also reflect the players’ straight-ahead jazz sensibilities.

Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads gets its name from Irena Portenko’s desire to dedicate the album to three of her favorite dads: her father, her uncle, and her daughter Anastasia’s father, as well as to Ukraine, where Portenko was born.
Album highlights include:

“Blackthorn in Blossom”: The duo displays a delicate touch on this tender traditional tune with a slightly melancholy air.
“Kyiv Waltz”: The lilting trumpet melody soars over a cool, sauntering guitar line.

“Walking Around the Garden”: The arrangement and Bob’s Ukrainian vocal have a longing quality that evokes jazz classics such as “I’m a Fool to Want You.”

“Blues for Ukraine”: A Bob Arthurs original with a great bluesy feel, and heartfelt lyrics offering support and sympathy for the country’s historic travails.

Trumpeter Bob Arthurs has been a regular on the New York and international jazz scene for a half century. He’s gigged at major jazz clubs in the Big Apple with greats including Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Warren Vache, Etta Jones, Carmen Leggio (with whom he co-led a big band) and a host of others. Bob has a particular affinity with guitarists, as evidenced by his collaborations with six-string masters such as Tal Farlow, Larry Coryell, Bucky Pizzarelli, Chuck Wayne, and Steve LaMattina, who appears on Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads, as well as previous Bob Arthurs recordings. Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads is Bob’s fourth release as a leader.

Bob recalls being entranced by the trumpet as a child, and began lessons at age 8; the young trumpeter played his first gig by the time he entered his teens. Bob later studied with Sal Mosca, whom he credits with teaching him the basics of improvising and for inspiring him to pursue his musical goals. The legendary pianist must have been pleased by his student’s progress, as the two went on to make music together for decades. Besides building a reputation as a jazz trumpet player, vocalist, band leader and recording artist, Bob Arthurs is well-regarded as an educator. For more than 30 years, he was on the faculty of the Westchester Conservatory of Music (now known as the Music Conservatory of Westchester), in White Plains, New York. He also was head of the school’s jazz department, as well as dean of students and faculty.

Bob and guitarist Steve LaMattina have been playing together for well over a decade. Steve was also on faculty at the Music Conservatory of Westchester and now has a large private teaching practice. He’s an in-demand sideman in the New York metropolitan area, and has recorded with Ted Brown, Dennis Irwin, Carmen Leggio and others.

Fans of jazz and creative music will be engaged by the innovative and intriguing music on Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads, and will no doubt look forward to hearing what Bob Arthurs lends his trumpet and voice to next time around.

The Sixth Annual Riverview Jazz Festival Returns to Jersey City!

June 1-9, 2018

Clear your calendars, grab your lawn chairs, and get ready for some great music! Jersey City’s most prolific festival returns for its sixth year of world-class jazz in its annual week-long celebration this June. Enjoy food trucks, children’s activities, a record riot, local vendors, and hundreds of professional musicians throughout the week. The sixth annual Riverview Jazz Festival will feature over 40 events, capped by two outdoor festival events June 1st and 9th.

“Jersey City is nestled between two of the most historically important jazz locations in the country – Newark and New York City. There are so many incredible players that live in the community and there is an increasing audience for world-class entertainment here,” says Riverview Jazz Executive Director Bryan Beninghove. “We feel so fortunate that we are able to connect the music to the people while also putting a shine on the hard-working clubs that are producing shows on a weekly basis.”

A new addition to the festival, the Riverview Kickoff Party sponsored by Exchange Place Alliance begins Friday, June 1 on the Exchange Place J. Owen Grundy Park Pier at 4:30pm. There will be a marching brass band led by Andrae Murchison, a ZT Amplifiers Artist Showcase featuring jazz guitar masters Dave Stryker, Vic Juris, and Charlie Apicella, the psycho-mambo band Gato Loco, and the salsa legend John “Dandy” Rodriguez’s Dream Team. In addition, there will be buskers galore honking away, DJ Prestige on the wax, food trucks, beer selections by Lutz Biergarten, and more! The event is free to the public.

The closing festival on Saturday, June 9 will once again be held at Riverview Fisk Park in Jersey City Heights and run from noon to 8pm. New this year will be the Skyline Stage, a stage built on the hill overlooking the New York City skyline creating an amphitheater setting. Also new this year will be a Record Riot hosted by Iris Records, local vendors curated by Marketplace JC, and art activities hosted by 107 Bowers Gallery on the newly renovated gazebo. The lineup includes trumpet legend Wallace Roney, Doug Beavers Salsa Orchestra,

Winard Harper & Tap Sensational (a tap dancing revue), Rob Curto’s Forró For All (Brazilian), the dynamic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and Soul Squad, organist Brian Charrette’s Kürrent, guitarist Walter Parks’ Spirituals Reimagined, and flutist Andrea Brachfield and Insight. Attendees of this free family-friendly event are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, participate in children’s activities, and enjoy the beer garden by Low-Fi.

There will be another 40 events throughout the area at clubs and parks alike.

Highlights from the week’s activities include Louis Hayes at the Moore’s Lounge Meet the Artist Series (Sunday 6/3). Drummer Louis Hayes has performed with everyone from Cannonball Adderly and Oscar Peterson to John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar. The Johnathan Blake Trio will perform the Jazz at Harborside Series (Wednesday June 6 at 11:30am). Johnathan is one of the most in-demand drummers in town. He has performed with Tom Harrell, the Mingus Band, Kenny Barron Trio and many more. Also Wednesday June 6, the Fox and Crow will host BeBimBop with special guest Gene Bertoncini. BeBimBop is a virtuoso acoustic instrumental trio featuring Brian Glassman, Joe Ravo, and Danny Mallon that can be seen at their weekly residency at the Morgan Library. Gene Bertoncini is one of the most pre-eminent jazz guitarists active today. He has been heard with Wayne Shorter, Benny Goodman, and Tony Bennett to name a few. Thursday June 7 will feature “Women in Jazz at the Rotunda” featuring vocalist Lezlie Harrison (7pm) and the Leni Stern Trio (8pm). The event will be held at the Brennan Courthouse on Newark Avenue and feature two of the most unique voices in jazz today. Tickets are $15.

“The support has been tremendous this year and it will definitely lead to our best festival yet”, says Beninghove. “Besides all the excitement around our bookend events, we couldn’t be prouder to work with neighborhood fixtures like Moore’s Lounge, Fox and Crow, The Brightside Tavern, Madame Claude Bis; as well as fairly new clubs like FM, the Archer, the Hutton, and GPs.”

Admission is free to both of the bookend concerts. However, a limited number of VIP passes are available for a $95 donation. VIP ticket-holders will receive a free T-shirt, mug, admission to VIP tents at both stages June 9, food and cocktails supplied by local restaurants, meet-the-artist opportunities, and more. The tickets are offered as part of a fundraising initiative supporting year-round programming produced by RiverviewJazz.org.

The Riverview Jazz Festival is made possible in part by Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, and the Office of Cultural Affairs. This program is also made possible by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a division of the Department of State, and administered by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Thomas A. DeGise, Hudson County Executive; and the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Dinner and Jazz at Birdland

By Michael Barbieri ****I went for dinner and a show at Birdland Jazz Club recently and my experience at this legendary venue was memorable indeed!

Opened in 1949, and named for alto saxophonist Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, the original Birdland was located on Broadway near 52nd Street.  The iconic club was home to jazz legends like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and Parker himself, along with many others.  In the 1960s, however, Birdland shuttered when crowds fell off.  In 1986, the club reopened at 105th Street and Broadway, welcoming newer artists along with many of the famous names who had played the original venue.  Finally, 10 years later, the club moved one last time, to its current location on West 44th Street—and not surprisingly, they’ve booked some of the best names in jazz once again, like Maynard Ferguson, John Pizzarelli, Phoebe Snow, Dave Brubeck, Jon Hendricks and many, many more.

For this first visit, I was in my comfort zone.  I was there to write up the food, as well as review Natalie Douglas, a fantastic jazz and cabaret artist, who’s done a series of tribute shows at the club over the years.  Natalie’s show was part of the Broadway@Birdland series, emceed by the multi-talented Jim Caruso, who also hosts the wildly successful Jim Caruso’s Cast Party, a fabulous open mic variety show with performances by Broadway legends, jazz greats, cabaret divas, new up-and-comers and even a star-struck tourist now and then!  The club itself is a class act too, with tiers of tables covered in white linen cloths, additional seating at the neon-accented bar, walls covered in elegant portraits of the artists who’ve played the room and an ample stage with excellent lighting and sound.

But before the show—dinner!

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
A performer of tango music I have always been fascinated by the unique sound of the bandoneón and how the instrument is used in solo arrangements and compositions. Performing together with bandoneón players and writing for the instrument as an arranger/composer has inspired me to adapt some of the techniques and interpretational aspects into my own piano playing. Iwanted to see if I could incorporate the multilayered, flowing and improvisational manner of playing – constantly changing focus be- tween the bass, chords, and melodic structures, rather than trying do all at once as often as possible like an orchestral reduction. This approach can be heard throughout the album and is taken to the extreme in El Marne, which is a bandoneón arrangement adapted for the piano. The melting point is the tribute composition “Tristezas de un doble S” where Piazzolla’s «Alfred Arnold» bandoneón is replaced by the «Steinway and Sons».

CHA·BÓN
/’ CHäbon/
Origin: ARGENTINA, informal, from the Argentine ‘lunfardo’
noun: chabón; plural noun: chabones
a man; a dude; a schmuck
“that chabón sounds terrible”; “those chabones sound terrible”

LUN·FAR·DO

/ˈlo͞onfärdo/
noun: from the Italian ‘lumbardo’, local dialect of Lombardy
a dialect or slang, originated and developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the lower classes in Buenos Aires; associated with the tango musicians and culture.
“chabón is lunfardo for dude”

Albeit mostly playful, there’s a common stigma against gingers (people with red hair) throughout the world, and my home country Argentina is no different. Although they don’t believe gingers have no soul, and although they don’t believe gingers are vampires; they do believe they’re bad luck. There’s this saying, “Colorado Yeta”, which roughly translates into ‘bad luck ginger’ (yeta = bad luck; = yeta, Colorado = ginger). To be honest, I never felt discriminated against because of my red hair, but I did stand out. Originally, the album title was going to be Colorado Yeta, which is the more introspective track, melancholic, almost like a ballad. But I knew that non Spanish speakers would have a hard time pronouncing and understanding that title. Additionally, I didn’t want the whole album to have this defeatist vibe to it, so I thought about what positive twist I could give the fact that I am, in fact, a ginger.

Enter León (lion). Yes, I have long red hair and a beard, but the lion speaks to more than just my, or anyone else’s, appearance. It speaks to anyone who’s ever felt ‘less than’ for any reason, because they too can be a lion. The lion represents anyone who grows into who they are, and owns it. The album, although not chronological, is somewhat autobiographical.

Throughout the title track, we try to blur the line between playing in duple and triple meter, and eventually get into a chacarera sort of feel that does exactly that. It doesn’t hurt that Jim Piela plays an incredibly beautiful solo that makes us stop worrying about what meter we’re in.

The second track, No 3, is a feature for our drummer, Josh Bailey. The rest of the band holds out chords (voiced without the third), giving him plenty of space to play freely. The top voice of the chord progression spells out what I call the ‘colorado yeta’ melody, which also appears in the intro to Casquito, and in a way prepares the listener for it.

Casquito in Spanish means ‘little helmet’, but represents a life lesson I learned early on. I had a bowl cut until the age of 9 or so, courtesy of my mom. This wasn’t a popular hairstyle for a kid in Argentina, and needless to say I did get teased quite a bit, with kids calling me ‘casquito’. Until one day I came home crying, and told my mom I wanted a haircut.

Next day I go to school feeling a lot better without my bowl cut, until I bump into this older kid (a friend of my brother’s) who looks at me, looks at my hair, and says one word to me before walking away: “Wimp.” He was right. Looking back, there was nothing wrong with my bowl cut, and to be honest, I looked better with it than with whatever random (read: standard) haircut I got. But I felt comfortable with it because it wasn’t different and I fit in. Life lesson: different is good. It’s actually great. But it takes a little courage sometimes, and what’s a lion without some courage?

My first album with The Chabones (although it’s credited as Michael Sarian, without & The Chabones) is called ‘Subtitles’, because when I was younger I mumbled a lot, and my friends would say they needed subtitles to understand what I was saying. I still mumble every now and again, and whenever I find myself mumbling, I sort of trail off and stop speaking. Understandably, this annoyed my ex-girlfriend, who would tell me to “use your words.” Your Words is a love song. It also breaks away from the more Argentine sounding rhythms of León and Casquito, and features straight eighth-note grooves, synthesizers and an epic tenor solo by Evan Francis.

In our previous album, ‘The Escape Suite’, our co-producer and engineer Luis Bacque put together this short remix of a bunch of tracks, sort of a mashup but not really. In retrospect, I should have included it in the album as a secret track. This time I wanted to do something similar, so we put together No 3 (Locust St. Remix) – because his studio is on Locust Street in New Jersey. We changed up some things, added some SFX, took out the horns and drums, and modified the ending. This is definitely the most experimental track of the record.

This is our third album, and it’s the one we took our time with the most so far. We workshopped the tunes over a longer period of time. We spent more time in the studio with Luis, tracking vocals and overdubbing keys and effects with Mike Verselli. We spent more time eating and drinking and talking about music.

I feel lucky to be able to make music with this group of people. My eternal gratitude to Jim, Josh, Mike, Evan, Trevor and Elad for not only playing my music, but for investing time and energy into making it better. Thanks to Luis for doing the same on the other side of the controls. And in addition to their love and support, thanks to my mother for giving me red hair, and thanks to my father for giving me a lot of it. – Michael Sarian
