DANGEROUS RHYTHMS: Q&A with Zaccai Curtis

At the age of 36, Zaccai Curtis is already a seasoned veteran in the world of jazz and Latin Jazz. What critics are saying about ‘Vigor Tanguero’

“The music portrayed in this album is a very moving, passionate, even daring statement, building a bridge between tango’s glorious past and its even brighter future.” by Marco Cangiano – The BNew York Jazz Record (June 2018)

“Pedro’s fantastic bass work is joined by high-energy players (Nick Danielson-violin, Rodolfo Zanetti-bandoneón, Emilio Teubal-piano), will thrill listeners who want LIFE to be a part of their music… whirling, swirling and all points in between…” by Dick Metcalf – Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“Engaging throughout with it’s twist and turns, thrills and spills, this set opens the tango ears in fine fashion to new possibilities and vibes. Tasty throughout, this is most righteous Argentine party on a platter.” By Chris Spector- Midwest Record

“…this performance is also possibly his finest – one on which he could clearly rest his laurels, should he choose to do so.” by Raul da Gama LatinJazzNet

Free Jazz Composer Michael Moss Debuts Two Major Compositions On His New Release HELIX.

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new band, the Accidental Orchestra, featuring 22 of the most exciting improvisers on the jazz scene today. His new CD HELIX is the premiere recording of a pair of his latest extended compositions.

HELIX kicks off with “The Old One,” which gets its title from Einstein’s name for God. Moss describes this five-piece suite as “an initiation into sacred ground.” He views it as part of a musical tradition stretching from the earliest ritual over the dead to Bach’s Mass in B Minor, through Native American rites of passage into the spirit world, the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish, and Buddhist funeral rituals.

Moss wrote “See Sharp or Be Flat/C# or Bb” while recovering from a fracture suffered in tripping over a curb. The composer brings a quirky sense of humor to the situation, right down to deciding to name his ensemble the Accidental Orchestra in memory of the incident. Moss aimed to let the band swing on this contrapuntal theme and variations mixing jazz, rhythm and blues, and the joy of dance. “Throughout I refer to Norwegian Wood (The Beatles), I Feel Good (James Brown), and Bags Groove (the Modern Jazz Quartet), but do not resort to familiar big band tropes,” Moss explains. “This is a type of string orchestra, but with lots of jazz musicians pushing the boundaries.”

The Chicago-born, Madison, Wisconsin-educated Michael Moss has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for 50 years, earning recognition for his skill and imagination as a multi-reed player, and for the freshness and intensity of his writing. The self-described “farthest-out cat” was a mainstay of Manhattan’s famed loft jazz scene, playing with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Annette Peacock, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Richie Beirach and scores of others. He’s equally at home from a duo setting to an orchestra of 50-plus players.

As a composer, Moss assigns time signatures to segments of his pieces, but the final form of any given composition depends entirely on the interaction of the musicians.  A sense of space marks much of his work.  Though, like most avant artists he shifts tempos frequently and sometimes drops the meter altogether, he and the group under his direction tend to listen more and play in the openings.  Though his music clearly arises from the jazz tradition, Moss draws heavily from disparate folk idioms.  American blues and Latin rhythmic influences are obvious in his work, but Israeli folk melodies (out of his own Jewish origins) or Tibetan chants (appropriated on a trip to India) are equally likely to emerge in his performances.  Listeners can’t help but be captivated by what they hear, as they accompany Moss and the Accidental Orchestra on this life-long journey.

“Playing free, but still playing together–it’s a question of moving forward by moving backwards and sideways at the same time,” Moss says obliquely, and yet the music seems to do just this, and makes sense. Robert LaBrasca, Press Connection and Rolling Stone writer (1986).

“Moss’ music is conceptually complex and musically brilliant, reaching across ages, cultures and continents for rhythms, phrases, melodies, and harmonics to produce a sound which is fascinating yet unsettling because it is foreign but so familiar.” Fred Waitzkin liner notes Michael Moss/Four Rivers Cross Current (1978).

What The Press Is Saying About HELIX

“This is a stunning achievement – one that demands our attention.”
Grady Harp, Amazon, April 2, 2018

“This fantastic album gets a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from me, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.”
“The 20:37 “C# or Bb” is not only my choice from this album, it’s also my personal favorite improvised set (yet) in 2018!  All the players in the orchestra challenge the boundaries on this one, & I’ve no doubt that those of you who thrive on music that stimulates creativity (in many different directions at once) will be playing this one over & over & OVER again!”
“The orchestra Michael assembled for this stunning trip is amazing in and of itself…over fifteen minutes of far-out fun for all.”
“If it’s etherspace you’re craving for in your listening adventures, you’ll find “Mind Of God” the perfect blend of cool and cacophonous.”
Rotcod Zzaj,Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion ReviewsFebruary 27, 2018

Michael Moss Uses Experimental Jazz To Bring Helix To Life
“While there are swing elements and other traditional jazz elements, but the form here is completely experimental. This is jazz of big ideas. And probably not for beginning jazz fans. Still, there is an energy and perceptiveness that keeps audiences listening, and that might be the most important thing of all.”
“From folk melodies to Renaissance orchestras, to Latin, blues and more, Moss has a nearly encyclopedic array of musical influences. According to Moss, he wants to stretch America’s musical heritage into the future while acknowledging its past innovators such as Louis Armstrong and Scott Joplin. With “Helix” it sounds as though he is doing exactly that.”
“The album succeeds as an experimental album based on a theme – – listeners with traditional expectations of jazz will be surprised or disappointed. But putting traditional restraints on free-flowing experimental jazz is to miss the point of the form.”
      Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire, February 15, 2018

“If Avant Garde, free-form jazz is your preference, you will enjoy listening to the outer limits of Dr. Michael Moss’s artistic creativity. Michael Moss is a 50-year veteran of the New York “free” jazz scene. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and a composer, Chicago-born. At times, this music reminds me of the Chicago Art Ensemble, except that this production features a twenty-two piece orchestra. The Moss production is all over the place, spewing energy and combining instruments and notes in a unique and often dissonant manner.”
“I was particularly drawn to the final “SEE SHARP OR BE FLAT” composition that features a provocative violin solo with complimentary string ensemble support. This composition gives more opportunity for individual players to step forward and solo. I found the guitar solo to be outstanding with Warren Smith’s percussion bright and tasty beneath it.”
“If you have a taste for a project that’s out-of-the-ordinary, the Accidental Orchestra will soothe your palate.”
      Dee Dee McNeil,February 28, 2018

“It is a work to be heard without prejudices, reminiscent of certain episodes of the music of Anthony Braxton.”
“There is everything from the more traditional jazz, with a swing of the rhythm section, to more material and abstract moments like in the long Inception, with instruments like the djembe or the tabla that give a sense of world, or the oboe of Richard Keene, with his nasal sound that stands out on the whole set.”
“Between moments more free and others more tied to the mainstream Moss demonstrates its music culture and the ability to consistently put together moments inspired by different historical periods.”
“A great record of this big band.”
Vittorio Lo Conte, Music Zoom, April, 2018

“The music and albums of this native of Chicago are always distinguished by their originality, and often the use of elements of various ethnic musical cultures.”
“In general – an excellent album for advanced fans of jazz music and, probably, quite a complex work for neophytes.”
Leonid Auskern, Nestor Media, March, 2018

      “Sun Ra-ish Swing”
“The Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a “Who’s Who” of the New York Improvised Music Scene.”
“A dissonant, yet strangely colorful and delightful series of chords emerge with a startling intensity.”
“See Sharp or Be Flat”begins with a shout of joy. It’s a jazz expression of an acceptance of all the good and bad things life throws at us.”
“Bridge”swings, walks, and flows like a rich liquid, as if it is urging you to follow its path.”
“Moss cultivates an intricate musical garden, then allows it to run wild, knowing quite well the trajectories each living thing will take.”
“A master of multiple reed instruments, and compositions . . . Moss knows how to handle himself. His musical inspirations are not limited by genre, culture, or historical period.  To transcend the constant danger of self indulgence and perform music that serves to communicate real ideas and real experiences in service of higher ideals is the sign of a master. Michael Moss and the Accidental Orchestra have accomplished this.”
      Dawoud Kringle,DooBeeDooBeeDoo NY, March, 2018

“MICHAEL MOSS/Helix:  The loft jazz mainstay puts together an Accidental Orchestra, in which the gang is all here, and sets out for places only hinted at in “Metal Machine Music’.  Using Einstein’s name for God as the jumping off point, I’ll bet this how things sound in heaven when Metatron dawdles over a second cup of coffee.”

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, Mark O Connor, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar”.

As both a bassist and an arranger-composer, Sam Bevan was an important part of the San Francisco Bay jazz scene for 16 years until he moved to New York in 2016. On Emergence, he uses some of his favorite Northern California musicians to introduce nine new compositions that he performs at the head of a quintet that also includes altoist Kasey Knudsen, Cory Wright on tenor and bass clarinet, either Ian Carey or Henry Hung on trumpet, and drummer Eric Garland along with a few guests. Bevan’s music has memorable themes, original chord changes and grooves, covers a wide variety of moods, features inventive rhythmic interplay, and is filled with unpredictable moments. His utilization of the three horns make the ensembles sound as if they are being played by a much larger band. The performances utilize repetition creatively, are episodic, evolve as they progress, and range from hard bop to freer explorations.

The highlights on Emergenceinclude: “H & A”: Starting out with an ominous feel, the piece becomes more light-hearted as altoist Knudsen plays over Bevan’s danceable bass line. “Old Cool”: Trumpeter Carey and Cory Wright on his atmospheric bass clarinet are in the spotlight during a relaxed song which harks back to days of classic hard bop. “Wide and Awake”: A riff played at first by Wright on bass clarinet and taken over by Bevan’s bass gives this piece the feel of a caravan. “Blues For CM”: The quintet plays free bop that is worthy of Ornette Coleman, music that swings while being free from chords. “Nellowee’s Waltz”: The closing ballad has mellow and wistful playing from Wright on bass clarinet. Emergenceis full of colorful solos from each of the musicians. But Sam Bevan deserves the main credit for the project’s success. He not only contributes bass playing that keeps the ensembles tight and provides a strong forward momentum, but challenging yet memorable compositions and the continually changing frameworks that inspires his musicians. Born in Oakand and growing up in Salt Lake City, Sam Bevan had classical piano lessons from the age of four, sang and played piano professionally, and earned a BA in French before dedicating himself to the bass and composing. Greatly in demand after moving back to Northern California in 1999, Bevan’s versatility and creativity while performing jazz, funk, r&b, folk, and Afro-Cuban music kept him constantly busy with stimulating projects. He has repeated his success since moving to New York. Throughout his very productive career, Sam Bevan has worked with such artists and groups as David Grisman, Roswell Rudd, Joshua Redman, Monk’s Music Trio, Mark Levine, singer Kenny Washington, Stacey Kent, Meklit Hadero, Peter Apfelbaum, Roberta Donnay, Jacqui Naylor, Zigaboo Modeliste, Bjorkestra, Jim Kweskin, Maria Muldaur, Houston Person, Joe Locke, Jackie Ryan, Roberta Donnay, Industrial Jazz Group and the Matt Flinner Trio. He also has three previous CDs as a leader.

Emergence is Sam Bevan’s most exciting release to date, a mature and enthusiastic statement that points the way forward for 21st century jazz.

Teri Roiger: The Cannon Falls-reared, New York-based jazz veteran is an accomplished and knowing singer. On last year’s thoroughly rewarding “Ghost of Yesterday: Shades of Lady Day,” she shows her depth and range, sparkling on Gil-Scott Heron’s lively, sax-spiked “Lady Day and John Coltrane,” the saucy, scat-buoyed “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” and the wonderfully woozy “It’s Easy to Remember.” Props to her bass-playing husband, John Menegon, who crafted the imaginative arrangements. Jon Bream, Minneapolis Star/Tribune (June 2018)

Vocalist and Minneapolis native Teri Roiger isn’t afraid to expand the canon of her heartfelt influences. On “Ghosts of Yesterday,” she wrote lyrics to two Lester Young saxophone solos, and to Ella Fitzgerald’s vocalese on the tune, “Them There Eyes”—all in the context of a Billie Holiday tribute. Thelonious Monk’s family blessed her lyrics to the composer’s classic, “Misterioso,” which she rechristened “Listen To Your Soul.” That blend of daring and intimacy with the music is evident in her singing too. She’s with a stellar quartet—bassist/husband John Menegon, drummer Phil Hey and pianist Phil Aaron. Britt Robson, City Pages (June 2018)

      “Powerfully moving…segacious warmth…impressively deep…” Christopher Loudon, JAZZTIMES

Teri’s latest release “GHOST OF YESTERDAY: Shades of Lady Day” was chosen by acclaimed author/critic Scott Yanow as one of his top 30 Jazz releases of 2017!

Echo Prize-Winning Jazz Singer Lucia Cadotsch Returns to NYC for an Encore Sound It Out Show with Her Berlin-Based Speak Low Trio Featuring Saxophonist Otis Sandsjö and Bassist Petter Eldh

Lucia performs two sets with her Speak Low trio on
Wednesday June 27 as part of the Sound It Out series at
      Greenwich House Music School

Lucia, Otis & Petter will be performing music from their debut album, Speak Low, which earned five-star raves in both DownBeat and The Guardian along with glowing reviews for its companion remix album, Speak Low Renditions

      shem.gif
“When Cadotsch sings standards with her kindred-spirit trio mates, Sandsjö on tenor saxophone and Eldh on double-bass, songs from a half-century ago feel renewed, as timeless art is refracted through a modernist prism. With no harmony instrument and the uncanny blend of these three performers – the cool precision of the vocalist, the free-jazz edge of the instrumentalists – such songs as ‘Willow Weep for Me’ and ‘Moon River’ have fresh textural and emotional resonance.” — DownBeat
With a sharp-eared love of the past but a sensibility resolutely of the present, new-era jazz singer Lucia Cadotsch’s trio Speak Low – featuring tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö and double-bassist Petter Eldh – reanimates songs long seemingly set in amber. Hailing from their adopted home of Berlin, Germany, these three musicians come at the Great American Songbook from a European angle, their “retro-futurist” sound as informed by remix culture and free jazz as by their appreciation for classic vocal records. Reviewing the group’s eponymous debut album of 2016, Speak Low (Yellow Bird/Enja), The Guardian declared: Remember the name Lucia Cadotsch – you’re going to be hearing a lot of it,” adding: “Cadotsch is a young, Zurich-born vocalist who possesses a classical clarity, a folk singer’s simplicity and an appetite for performing very famous songs (‘Moon River,’ ‘Don’t Explain,’ ‘Strange Fruit’) in the company of two edgy free-jazz instrumentalists, who flank her sedate progress with split-note sax sounds and spiky basslines with percussive strumming. In this compelling trio’s hands, the process is remarkably melodious and illuminating… It’s all eerily beautiful.” Along with glowing reviews, Lucia won the 2017 Echo Jazz Prize – the German equivalent of a Grammy Award – for Best Vocalist of the Year for Speak Low. She and her Swedish friends Otis and Petter bring the bittersweet repertoire of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Dinah Washington vividly alive for a new generation of listeners, as well as for veteran music lovers in search of fresh treatments of these timeless songs.

After a fantastic performance for Sound It Out this past January (along with a Winter JazzFest show), Lucia, Otis & Petter return to New York City this week. The Speak Low trio performs on Wednesday June 27 in the Sound It Out series at Greenwich House Music School, with sets at 8:00pm and 9:00pm. Tickets are $20, and there will be a free wine party in the garden after the concert. Greenwich House Music School is located at 46 Barrow St. in Greenwich Village. (More venue details and coming attractions below.) Profiled in DownBeat magazine, Lucia explained the individualistic approach she takes with the trio: “I want to be subtle and melodic in my phrasing, but I also need roughness and intensity in music. Otis and Petter say in the songs what I don’t say myself. While I’m the still center, they can storm around me.”

The trio’s distinctive black-and-white videos for Speak Low have a European art-house feel, as with the official album trailer here. There is also a gorgeous one-shot music video for “Slow Hot Wind,” as well as live videos for “Speak Low” and “Strange Fruit” / “Ain’t Got No,” among others. Touching upon their European roots, Lucia, Otis & Petter have lately added to their live repertoire an arrangement by the great Italian modernist Luciano Berio of the Anglo-American folk song “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” as well as an English translation of the dark “Ballad of the Drowned Girl” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

Discussing their arrangements, Lucia said: “What we do is like sampling culture in hip-hop. We might quote a detail from an old recording, but change the register and tempo and then loop it into our arrangement organically.” As DownBeat noted, they turn a high-register clarinet part in “Deep Song” from a Billie Holiday LP into a bass line; they echo an intro improv seen in a live Nina Simone video of “Ain’t Got No” in their arrangement; they repurpose a marimba line in Johnny Hartman’s version of “Slow, Hot Wind” as an outro hymn melody. Germany’s Jazzpodium described these reinventions as “like a musical night trip… urban, with an analog directness and a sheer boundless freedom in its approach to interpretation and sound.”And the DownBeat review of Speak Low and its remix follow-up, Speak Low Renditions, hailed the trio’s creative approach overall: “Such is the spell that Cadotsch, Sandsjö and Eldh cast that it can make one feel that this is the only way age-old standards should be approached: not slavishly but fearlessly, with an unfettered imagination approaching that of the songs’ originators.”

Virtuosic playing and superlative compositions have earned Danish guitarist/composer Torben Waldorff a place on the list of today’s top jazz guitarists. On Wednesday, June 27 he brings his complex and exciting music to the Rochester Jazz Festival, Nordic & Euro Jazz Now Stage, Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 111 N. Chestnut St., Rochester. Joining Waldorff will be pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Jon Wikan.

      Performances at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets $30.

      For information visit http://www.rochesterjazz.com/artists?artist_id=419.

Born in Denmark, Waldorff moved to the US in 1984 to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. There, he studied with Herb Pomeroy and Charlie Banacos, gigged in the Boston club scene with Sam Newsome and Jim Black, and befriended Ingrid Jensen and Donny McCaslin. After Boston, Waldorff moved to Copenhagen and then Malmo, Sweden, releasing two CDs for the Swedish label LJ-Records. During a US tour promoting his albums, he befriended Maria Schneider. She, along with Jensen, encouraged Waldorff to move his musical endeavors to ArtistShare, the pioneering, crowd-funded, multi-Grammy winning label.

The transition established Waldorff as an international artist. His first ArtistShare release, the 2006 Brilliance, was recorded live at NYC’s 55 Bar and featured Donny McCaslin, Matt Clohesy and Jon Wikan. It revealed Waldorff’s talent for assembling a stellar band to present his own songs. As the Village Voice put it, “Waldorff’s interactions with the rhythm section and particularly saxophonist Donny McCaslin twist apart any and all orthodoxies.”

In 2008 the band went on to record Afterburn which added Sam Yahel on keys. The album solidified Waldorff’s position as an ace songwriter and showed off his almost telepathic rapport with McCaslin. It made several international best-of-the-year lists. Critic Doug Ramsey wrote, “expansive jazz of the kind that thrives in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn and is spreading around the world. “Waldorff, McCaslin, and Yahel are leaders among the articulate standard bearers of the movement.” American Rock Beauty followed in 2010, with Jon Cowherd added to the lineup. JazzTimes wrote, “American Rock Beauty has earfeel as a fine Burbundy has mouthfeel.”

Waldorff’s most recent recording, the 2017 Holiday on Fire, marks his 10th year and 5th CD with ArtistShare. Recorded after a tumultuous and celebrated gig at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC, it features Ingrid Jenson on trumpet, Johnathan Blake on drums, Drew Gress on bass, and Maggi Olin on piano. The album received accolades including a four star review in DownBeat and an All About Jazz review which raved “one—he rips like a rock star; and two—the band he has put together has a sharply distinctive, modern, maybe even futuristic sound.”

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed. – Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s new CD “Ladies Day”
      Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.” —Scott Yanow

      All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, becausethese standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!   –C. Whether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton, Michael Rabinowitz’s contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael’s improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument.

“Listening to a bassoon sing jazz is a distinctive pleasure. After hearing Bennie Maupin and Yusef Lateef tackle this instrument, I have a certain appreciation and expectation of the bassoon’s power and persuasion. Michael Rabinowitz appreciates and exploits the acoustic characteristics of the bassoon and this makes his “Uncharted Waters” CD a joy to my ears.”

Bossa Nova Baby Show with Juliana Areias
Concludes First U.S. Tour on June 29th

Australian Performer to Appear at NYC’s The Green Room 42
      shem.gif
(New York City, NY) – Australian-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias wraps up her first U.S. Tour on Friday, June 29, with a salute to 60 years of the bossa nova at The Green Room 42, an upscale cabaret club serving New York City’s theater district. Drawing on traditional Brazilian bossa nova rhythms, Ms. Areias performs a distinctive style of Latin Jazz which has made her a hit down under.

She will be joined by a Brazilian jazz ensemble which includes Oriente Lopez on piano, Jorge Continentinoon flute and sax, Itaiguara Brandãoon bass, and Samuel Martinelle on drums. Her show highlights a blend of original songs from her internationally acclaimed “Bossa Nova Baby” CD plus a selection of exclusive arrangements of bossa classics and samba hits.

Born and raised in Brazil, Juliana Areias began her music career in Europe before moving to Australia. It was her all original CD “Bossa Nova Baby” that catapulted her to fame less than two years ago. Featured on Australia Day 2016, the CD received multiple music award nominations and earned regular air play around the world. Her Bossa Nova Baby Showis filled with original tunes as well as classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Mas Que Nada,” blending jazz, pop, funk, ballad, and tango, all drawing on infectious samba rhythms.

Ms. Areias has performed at many major venues around the world including the famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand, The Sydney Opera House in Australia and Beco des Garrafas, the legendary jazz club in Rio de Janeiro.  Her first U.S. tour which began in Florida and ends in New York City marks the launch of her “Bossa Nova Baby” CD in America. In mid-June, she performed at New Jersey’s popular Bickford Theatre to an enthusiastic audience of bossa nova fans.

“I’m looking forward to appearing at New York City’s Green Room 42 with such a talented group of musicians,” said Juliana Areias. “Bossa Nova is my essence as a person, my original impulse as a singer and my life-soul-heart’s pulsation and it is an honor to share it with audiences around the world. Touring the United States has been a thrill and it has touched my heart to see my fans have as much fun as I do at each show.”

Joining Ms. Areias for the finale of her U.S. tour will be a talented ensemble of jazz musicians. Multiple Grammy-winning pianist Oriente Lopez came to New York from his native Cuba in 1993 and has collaborated with many artists including Paul Simon, Regina Carter, and Paquito D’Rivera. Jorge Continentino was born in Rio de Janeiro where he studied flute and saxophone. Since moving to New York 15 years ago, he has become best known for his collaborative Latin music group Forro in the Dark. The Brazilian guitarist Itaiguara Brandao is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and has become one of the most sought-after Latin and World Music artists, touring and recording with musicians such as Romero Lubambo, Robin Eubanks, and Paquito D’Rivera. And drummer Samuel Martinelli has worked with many top jazz musicians including Claudio Roditi, Alcione, Hendrik Meurkens, Nilson Matta, and Marcus McLaurine.

Juliana Areias, Bossa Nova Baby will appear at The Green Room 42 inside Yotel, NYC on Friday, June 29, at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are from $20 to $50 and there is no food or beverage minimum. With an extensive menu and bar, the entertainment venue has been embraced by theater fans and regularly brings in top talent. MORRISTOWN JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL
      SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2018

Much Anticipated Free Festival Brings Top Artists to the Green

      shem.gif
MORRISTOWN, NJ – The eighth Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will be held  on the Green  in Morristown, New Jersey on Saturday, August 18, from noon until 10:00 p.m. The annual free concert is made possible by the generous support of many sponsors who are well-known in the region.

This year’s festival begins at noon with Rhythm in Blue, the dynamic new jazz ensemble from the United States Air Force. Comprised of 14 talented musicians, the jazz band draws on a classic well-known big band repertoire with an unparalleled level of excitement and versatility.

Jazz fans know that the military jazz bands have a rich history of spawning superb musicians. During World War II, many top jazzmen joined the service bands, the most well-known being Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw. But many younger musicians honed their chops playing in the service as well including a young Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond and a singer who has gone on to have a pretty good career, Tony Bennett.

At two o’clock a New Jersey Jazz Society favorite, trumpeter, singer and songwriter Bria Skonberg returns to the Green for the first time in three years, taking over the slot held for the past several years by Bucky Pizzarelli. Unfortunately, the hot sun of August has become too much for the legendary nonagenarian so the mantle has passed to the young musician who continues to win critical acclaim and more awards.

Since her Festival debut in 2015, Bria has had two new releases, won the prestigious JUNO Award, received the Swing! Award from Jazz at Lincoln Center, took home a Hot House Jazz Magazine Award last fall, and most recently won Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. Her band includes Evan Arntzen on reeds, Mathis Picard on piano, Devon Starks on bass, and Darrian Douglas on drums.

Following Bria will be New Jersey’s own LaBamba and the Hubcaps. Led by long-time Conan O’Brien band member Richie “LaBamba” Rosenberg, this explosive ensemble has been a fixture on the Asbury Park music scene for many years and was the stage band for the first five induction ceremonies of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Equally at home with swinging jazz, and blues and funk, the Hubcaps provide a perfect transition from hot swinging jazz in the afternoon to steamy blues at night.

Trombonist Richie Rosenberg got his start with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, but quickly became one of the most sought-after horn men around, leading Bruce Springsteen’s Miami Horns at the Super Bowl, and joining drummer Max Weinberg and the Conan O’Brien Band more than two decades ago.

At six o’clock, the music turns to the blues with the European-based Bernard Allison Group. Born in Chicago in 1965, Bernard Allison was first introduced to the blues by his father, the legendary guitarist Luther Allison. Bernard developed his guitar chops with the Koko Taylor Blues Machine as well as the legendary Willie Dixon. A star in Europe, Bernard is beginning to get a lot of notice here in America through appearances at Festivals and radio airplay.

Wrapping up the day is blues guitarist Davy Knowles who may just be in his early thirties, but has been turning heads with his mature playing. He has toured with a long list of top blues guitarists and has headlined at festivals such as Lollapalozza, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits. He is praised by guitar greats such as Joe Satriani who proclaimed Knowles his “favorite modern bluesman” and Peter Frampton who called him “the gunslinger guitarist of the 21stcentury.”

Festival co-producer Linda Smith of LKS Associates looks forward to the show this year. “It is great to feature some young artists, such as Bria Skonberg and Davy Knowles, along with established stars like LaBamba. We love the variety that this festival can provide.”

Mayor Tim Dougherty, who initiated the festival in 2011, commented, “With swinging jazz in the afternoon and hot blues in the evening, there is great music for everyone. The Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival has become a much anticipated event and we thank our generous sponsors for making this day possible.”

The Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will take place on the Green in Morristown on Saturday, August 18, from noon until 10:00 p.m. Admission is free and many local restaurants will be offering specials for festival attendees. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. For more information, visit www.morristownjazzandblues.org.

“It’s quite possible that one of 2018’s best jazz vocal albums was recorded some six decades ago. Let me explain. Smithsonian/Folkways recently released the anthology Hot Jazz, Cool Blues & Hard-Hitting Songs, a double album that encompasses a large but hardly comprehensive swath of Barbara Dane’s music. Never interested in fitting neatly into music industry slots, Dane, a longtime Oakland resident, was guided by her social conscience, and the album includes many of the freedom songs and protest anthems that she sang at rallies and events around the country. But Hot Jazz also offers a potent reminder that Dane was the era’s greatest white blues singer, a gift that overlapped considerably with her nonpareil command of jazz.” (Andrew Gilbert) Leonard Feather, writing in Playboy, called her “Bessie Smith in stereo!” AndTime magazine quoted Louis Armstrong, having just caught Dane, telling his agent, “Did you get that chick? She’s a gasser.”

Barbara Dane’s rare east coast appearance at Joe’s Pub this Thursday celebrates the release of this career-spanning collection, reflecting over 60 years of Dane’s eclectic musical history and offering unparalleled insight into the living legend cited as an inspiration by Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt, and whose own early mentors included Pete Seeger and Count Basie.

This special concert will feature Tammy Hall (piano), Ruth Davies (bass) and Daria Johnson (drums) plus special guests from Cuba, Osamu (guitar) & Pablo Menendez (harmonica and guitar).

Dane has “a jazz musician’s sense of rhythm, a blues singer’s deep investment in the material, and a folk stylist’s attention to authenticity” (The Boston Globe).

Harnessing the energy of someone half her age, she continues inspiring audiences as an outspoken and indomitable woman who fearlessly followed her conscience and is still going strong, free of regrets, with wit, wisdom and swing.

      HOT OFF THE PRESSES!
The Smithsonian Folkways 2018 release Barbara Dane: Hot Jazz, Cool Blues & Hard-Hitting Songs is a career-spanning collection reflecting over 60 years of the eclectic musical history of this “unsung hero of American music”(The Boston Globe). The 2 CD retrospective offers unparalleled insight into the living legend cited as an inspiration by Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt, and whose own early mentors included Pete Seeger and Count Basie.

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights In Jazz closes its 46thseason with a tribute to lauded jazz guitarist Russell Malone. A mainstay on the Manhattan music scene since the 1980s, as well as a regular at international festivals and concert halls, Russell has attracted critical and fan recognition for his work as an accomplished leader and in-demand sideman.

The versatile guitarist has been praised for his tender touch on ballads, as well as for revealing a smokin’ side that made him right at home in organ bands fronted by icons like Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff.

“Russell is so versatile, and we have such great people joining him, this is going to be quite a concert. We salute a living jazz artist every year. I believe in doing it while they’re alive and it means something, that’s part of our tradition,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares.

The unique Highlights In Jazz series thrives on bringing together musicians with a mix of styles from across the generations, and welcoming the sometimes unexpected results of their collaborations. Kleinsinger loves the freshness and spontaneity guaranteed by this approach: “There are always two concerts: The one I envision and the one that actually takes place,” Jack reveals with a laugh. “Different kinds of players sound wonderful together,” he continues, pointing to the concert’s two saxophonists as examples: “Jimmy Heath is a bopper and Houston Person swings and has that big tone. They’ll find common ground and it will be great.”

The guest of honor, guitarist Russell Malone, has released more than a dozen albums as a leader, including 2017’s well-received Time for the Dancers. Critics have called him “the gifted torch-bearer” of jazz guitar, and cited him for as an exemplary player of “irrepressible charisma” and “underrated artistry.” Russell has enjoyed long associations with musicians as varied as Jimmy Smith, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall, appearing on three of her Grammy nominated albums. He has frequently collaborated with pianist Benny Green, and shared stages and/or studios with Roy Hargrove, Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller, Jack McDuff, Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, and more than one Marsalis brother.

      Saxophonist George Coleman

No tenor saxophonist better epitomizes the robust muscularity of that heavyweight instrument of jazz expression than George Coleman.  With brilliant technique and a deeply soulful tone firmly rooted in his hometown of Memphis, George has performed with many of jazz’ most legendary figures and influenced countless saxophonists during his half century in music.

Saxophonist Houston Person is among the most in-demand tenor players on the New York jazz scene. He has a special affinity with singers, honed during his two decades-long association with vocalist Etta Jones. Houston has released dozens of albums as a leader, alongside greats such as Ron Carter, Steve Nelson, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Joey DeFrancesco, Bernard Purdie, Les McCann, Benny Green, Grady Tate, Curtis Fuller, and other notables.

Drummer Lewis Nash called his first album as a leader Rhythm is My Business, and he certainly got that right! The Phoenix-born drummer started the New York phase of his career in the band of the redoubtable Betty Carter, followed by stints with Ron Carter, Branford Marsalis, and J.J. Johnson. Lewis stepped into the fabled George Adams/Don Pullen quartet (following the late Dannie Richmond), and also played with Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Clark Terry, and Milt Jackson. Besides releasing dozens of recordings as a leader, Lewis is featured on more than 300 albums as a sideman with Joe Lovano, Nancy Wilson, Bette Midler, and Kenny Rankin, among scores of others.

Drummer Willie Jones III was barely into his teens when he began gigging professionally. He received a scholarship to Cal Arts, where he studied with Albert “Tootie” Heath; in another early milestone, Willie was a semi-finalist in the respected Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition. He also won the John Coltrane Young Artist Competition with his band Black Note. Willie has played with Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, Arturo Sandoval, and Roy Hargrove, as well as Kurt Elling, Michael Brecker, Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock and others. He continues to record as a leader, compose, produce, and be an invaluable member of the current jazz scene.

Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt is among the most prominent players on the scene today, having appeared with the Mingus Big Band, Vincent Herring, Ravi Coltrane, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Frank Wess, John Hicks, Bobby Short, Lonnie Plaxico and more. A perennial on “best trumpeter” lists from numerous publications and associations, Jeremy has released close to 20 albums as a leader, including 2017’s critically acclaimed Make Noise!

Guitarist Gene Bertoncini is sometimes referred to as “the Segovia of jazz,” the New Yorkermagazine has sung his praises, and Gene’s concerts and recordings are regularly spotted on the top 10 lists of publications from the Washington Postto Jazzizmagazine. Versatile enough to play with the Tonight Show band and the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, Gene’s jazz credentials comprise collaborations with greats including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, and Nancy Wilson.

Vibraphonist Steve Nelson has been singled out by jazz journalist John Murph as “one of today’s most revered jazz vibraphonists.” He’s built his sterling reputation on his contributions to bands fronted by Kenny Barron, David “Fathead” Newman, Dave Holland, Renee Rosnes, Grant Green, Johnny Griffin, Jackie McLean and Mulgrew Miller. Steve has been described as a “reluctant bandleader,” explaining that he learns so much as a sideman that he’s not always eager to step out in front. But when Steve does put a band together, he goes for the best: On his well-reviewed 2017 CD, Brothers Under the Sun, Steve leads an all-star quartet featuring pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash

Bassist Luke Sellick is still in his mid-20s, but has already become the bassist of choice for Russell Malone, Johnny O’Neal, Jimmy Greene, and others. The Juilliard alumnus was mentored by the great Ron Carter and has played with Orrin Evans, Carl Allen, and Renee Rosnes. Luke’s 2017 debut album,Alchemist, features nine original compositions, performed with some of New York’s best players.

As is the tradition, a special surprise guest will be on hand, the player’s identity a closely held secret till show time. In past years, scheduled guests have occasionally showed up with guests of their own in tow, to universal delight. “Sometimes we get lucky,” Jack Kleinsinger muses. “Buddy Rich was our scheduled guest at one of the concerts, and he asked if he could bring a friend. Lo and behold, it was Stan Getz.” The veteran producer still sounds a little bit amazed by that occurrence, all these years later.

Keep your fingers crossed for surprises–who knows what could happen to top off the smashing 46thseason of Highlights In Jazz!

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

      What The Press Is Saying:

“Tranchina is a vocalist with a unique sound. There is the fragility of Stacey Kent and Astrud Gilberto but with the tonal quality of Nadia Basurto.”
      – Ian Lomax, Jazz Journal

“Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes.“
      ▪ Michael Bailey – All about jazz

“Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time. A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout. Check it out.”
      ▪ CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

“Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.”
      ▪ Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

“Gabriele surprises with her ability to hold steady notes that other singers might artificially push down to make smoky, or force up to sound light. All of Tranchina’s notes sound right and expertly turned. None of the notes sound as though the singer has strained to reach them. In short, she doesn’t make a grating sound.
Tranchina’s work flows easily from one cultural to the next. Each piece of the instrumentation meshes with the other, and none of it overwhelms the singer. That is important; the album remains one of vocal jazz and listeners get a chance to hear who the singer is, as shown through the work.”
      ▪ Doudie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

What The Press Is Saying About Jared Gold’s “Reemergence”
      DownBeat Magazine Editor’s Pick

      Bobby Reed
Most jazz fans have encountered the unfortunate scenario of being thrilled by the names on an album cover but then being disappointed by the music. That is definitely not the case with the new leader project from Jared Gold, which showcases the versatile organist and his all-star band: guitarist Dave Stryker, drummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. Stryker, who also produced the album, has a 14-year history with Gold, and his simpatico rapport with the organist spices up the proceedings, as each musician frequently adds clever coloration when the other is unleashing a sturdy solo. Hart—whose subtle brushwork is just as mesmerizing as his powerful stick-work in this program—demonstrates the mastery that has made him a legend. Pelt, who adds potent brass to three tracks, elevates this disc: Without him, these sessions might have yielded a memorable trio disc, but with him on board, the result is one of the strongest straightahead discs of the year thus far.

This band certainly can burn, as evidenced by the title track (which was penned by the leader), but a poignant reading of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” reflects Gold’s ability to tug at the listener’s heartstrings with a melancholy mood. Gold has curated a wonderful, eclectic program that features two Gershwin tunes (“It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “How Long Has This Been Going On”), Ornette Coleman’s “Blues Connotation,” Stevie Wonder’s “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love” (from 1972’s Talking Book) and “One For John A,” a swinging, original tribute to the late guitar icon John Abercrombie, with whom the organist worked for years. Gold and Stryker can ignite fireworks at will, but on this rendition of “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” both musicians coax a vocal timbre out of their respective axes. Nicely done, gentlemen.

…one of the year’s strongest titles to date and upon repeated listening  gets so much more enjoyable. – CJ Shearn Jazz Views

      Jeff Know-Audiophile Audition
…this is a CD that will be loved by Hammond fans, and highlights Gold’s talents as both a creative organist as well as arranger. His talents have matured and hopefully we’ll see more exploratory efforts from Jared well into the future.

      Dick Metcalf  contemporaryfusionreviews.com
Jared Gold hoppin’ Hammond B3 jazz Jared Gold – REEMERGENCE:  Without doubt, Jared is one of THE best Hammond B3 jazz players .

Dee Dee McNeil LA Jazz Musical Memoirs
Billy Hart, on drums, fuels the first and title tune, “Reemergence” composed by the featured artist, Jared Gold. Gold is a fresh, jazz -organ, recording artist making waves on the East Coast. This is his eighth recording, and he’s surrounded himself with a group of excellent musicians to support his musical concepts. Dave Stryker is not only a proficient guitarist, but a record producer with his own label, a composer and a very busy New York musician. Drummer, Billy Hart, is legendary and was once the drummer of choice with the great Jimmy Smith. Trumpeter, Jeremy Pelt, is a refreshing addition to the organ trio. The first thing that stands out about Jared Gold is his ability to take familiar songs like Stevie Wonder’s “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love’ or the Lennon/McCartney standard, “She’s Leaving Home” and turn them into harmonically fresh works of art. Gold’s creativity with harmonics is formidable. Gold started out as a piano player, but quickly found his expressive niche on the organ. He was born in Englewood, New Jersey February 27, 1980 and has worked extensively with Oliver Lake and John Abercrombie. This ninth album as a leader solidifies his unique approach to his instrument and his excursions into arrangements that are unique, like the title tune that roots itself in an unusual fourteen-bar blues pattern. On the tune, “Sweet Sweet Spirit” he takes us to church. Songs like “Ornette Coleman’s Blues Connotations” show the listener that he can groove with the best of them and also gives Hart an opportunity to break free and exuberantly solo on the drums. Jared Gold comes into sight and prominence once more, just like the title of this CD proclaims.

      Jonathan Widran JWVIBE
Recently voted the Top Rising Star on organ in an annual Downbeat poll, NYC based B-3 visionary Jared Gold fashions a dynamic through line to the generation of jazz organ that inhabits his muse by including, on his Strikezone debut Reemergence, legendary drummer Billy Hart, who got his start in the 60s with Jimmy Smith.

Ensembling again with guitarist Dave Stryker (who also produced), and adding trumpeter Jeremy Pelt to the fold, Gold creates an explosive melodic and rhythmic master class on the organ’s wide-ranging possibilities. He re-imagines Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Gershwin, an Ornette Coleman blues classic and a renowned church song – but saves his most imaginative expressions for his easy swinging tribute to John Abercrombie (who he played with for a few years) and Stryker’s adventurous closer “Nomad.”
