Wonder and innocence, gaudiness and cheer: can it be any surprise that the jazz drummer Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays?” – The New York Times

Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O has been delighting audiences since they first gathered in 2009 for a concert in Brooklyn. The response to the music was so positive they decided to gather on a snowy May day to make a record. Their 2010 release on Palmetto Records, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O, garnered great critical acclaim including a 4-star review in DownBeat magazine where they proclaimed, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O provides Yuletide greetings so eloquent and mind-bending even the nastiest of Scrooges will want to pay attention.”

The Tree-O’s fun-filled concert presentation, which include films, lights and decorations, has allowed the Tree-O to tour each December since 2011 throughout the US and Canada. The band’s performance on the NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert catapulted them to cult-status among holiday music aficianodos. They now have established annual gigs in NYC at the Jazz Standard ( 6th Year), in Chicago at the Green Mill as well as a bi-annual gig in St.Louis at Jazz at the Bistro. Part of the allure of the concert performances are the guests that may appear to aid in spreading Christmas cheer. Over the years such luminaries as Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Esperanza Spaulding, Marshall Allen, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, Jeff Hamilton, Cecile McClorin Salvant, Christian McBride, Janis Siegal, Dawn Clement, Duchess, Aaron Diehl, Jimmy Bosch and Bobby Sanabria and many others have joined the Tree-O for sonic merriment. Comedian Amy Schumer so loved the band at their 2015 appearance in St.Louis, she and her crew even joined in on the fun. It was wild!

The Tree-O features multi-reed master Jeff Lederer who has released many celebrated recordings as a leader and once met Charlie Chaplin as a young child. The bassist Paul Sikivie has been a mainstay in the bands of Cecile McClorin Salvant and Aaron Diehl and hails from Gainesville, Florida– the birthplace of Gatorade. Celebrated drummer Matt Wilson, one of jazz music’s most beloved ambassadors, has two different sized feet. Left-9 Right 10 1/2.

Back in September Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion played Smoke Jazz Club on the Upper West Side for the first time.  Sammy’s special brand of sophisticated Latin jazz mixed with his ebullient sense of humor made the evening a wonderful success.

For those who missed the show and for those who came and loved it there’s another opportunity to experience Sammy and his band in this great venue.  Plan on coming for dinner — Smoke has a great kitchen.

The Jazz Foundation of America’s Puerto Rico fund has been helping many musicians who have lost their income and their homes.  Sammy was born in the Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Maria’s aftermath has a been a time of great concern to him, his family and his fellow musicians on the island.  On this evening Sammy will offer an autographed CD to all who donate $25 or more.  A representative from JFA will be present to receive pledges and donations.

Sammy will be joined onstage by two brilliant Venezuelan virtuosos Silvano Monasterios (piano) and Gabriel Vivas (bass), Chilean sax master Anibal Rojas, Cuban trumpetist Dennis Hernandez and Puerto Rican drummer Nomar Negroni

Musically Yours,

Gabriele Tranchina

Featuring

Gabriele Tranchina, voice
Joe Vincent Tranchina, piano
Andy Eulau, bass
Willie Martinez, drums
Renato Thoms, percussion

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

Critics love MJ’s new CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a

calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while

giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful,
and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.” —Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and

overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be
is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the

less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly

delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!

Helen Sung- Piano
Kenny Davis – Bass
Tommy Campbell – Drums

Japanese native Jazz Singer TAEKO is returning to the historic Birdland Jazz Club on Thursday December 7th at 6pm with a dazzling group of Helen Sung on piano, Kenny Davis on bass and Tommy Campbell on drums.

TAEKO moved to New York City in the late 90’s and quickly garnered the nickname “Songbird” from the NYC jazz elite. With a stunning four octave range, she sings with “deep soulfulness reminiscent of Anita Baker with sophisticated scatting a la Ella” as jazz critics describe.

With a never ending stream of musical ideas and a fluid delivery that shows years of dedication in studying her craft, little is left to doubt how TAEKO has built a dedicated fan base in both the U.S. and overseas. Growing up in Japan, she was inspired early on by the traditional Japanese music her father and grandfather played, and has been singing as long as she can remember. TAEKO ‘s interest in American music was piqued while still a young child. In her formative musical years she counts traditional jazz, modern American music, and Eastern music among her influences in shaping her contemporary vocal style to this day.

“In the early stages of my jazz studies I immersed myself in not only the great vocalists but instrumentalist as well.” said TAEKO. “The one thing that I caught early on was that each had their own individual style. While they could and sometimes, did mimic others in paying tribute through a solo or performance – for all of those masters you could always tell who they were. That’s what I’ve focused on for all of these years, developing my voice, and finding my own place in the musical landscape.”

TAEKO has perfected her craft over the last few years as she has graced the stages of some of the most heralded Jazz clubs on the East Coast, including, Birdland, The Kitano, Smalls, Zinc Bar, the Minton’s Playhouse, and the Blue Note. Additionally, she has been featured at such prominent U.S. festivals as the Cape May Jazz Festival, the Women in Jazz Festival in New York City, the United Philadelphia Jazz Festival, the North East Florida Jazz Festival, and Newburgh Jazz Series, in addition to her performances at numerous Jazz festivals in Japan. TAEKO was also a finalist in the 2008 NYC JazzMobile Jazz Vocal Competition.

TAEKO has sung the National Anthem at the Japan Run in New York City for the past 6 years, and she was a featured artist at the 5th annual Japan Day at Central Park in New York City 2011. In 2013, TAEKO released her critically acclaimed third CD in the US “Wonderland” (Flat Nine Records), which features a “who’s who” of jazz heavy hitters. TAEKO’s new CD is scheduled to be released in July 2018 which features Theo Hill on piano, Francois Moutin on bass, and co-producer Victor Jones on Drums.

The title of this album says it all. The English translation, Speak Sweet, is a reference to all the dulcet-toned saxophonists who fueled Gil Spitzer’s imagination as a developing alto saxophonist growing up in the East Bronx. The names Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges immediately come to mind, and Spitzer is right in that number with his beautiful tone and lyrical approach in what, amazingly, is his debut recording at the age of 75! But as Brazilian bassist and producer of this session, Nilson Matta, says of Spitzer, “You don’t have to be any certain age to play music. Anytime is about time.”

Matta met the saxophonist at his Samba Meets Jazz Summer Music Camp in Bar Harbor, Maine and the friendship deepened when the bassist invited Spitzer to an international SMJ camp in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Taken by the altoist’s sound, Matta later invited him to sit in with his group on gigs at Birdland back in New York City. “He’s got that lyrical thing, which is very charming,” said the bassist of Spitzer, “and also nice tone, great taste. He embraces all of those things and he plays with a lot of spirit.”

For Falando Docemente, Matta assembled a like-minded crew of Brazilian compatriots — guitarist Chico Pinheiro, drummer Mauricio Zottarelli and percussionist Fernando Saci — to provide an authentic vibe on several alluring bossa novas. Saxophonist Harry Allen, a guest faculty member at Matta’s SMJ camp, was paired with Spitzer on Hank Mobley’s hard bop anthem This I Dig Of You, the luxurious ballad Early Autumn and Spitzer’s lone original here, Blues for Harry A”. Rising star pianist-composer Julian Shore was recruited by Matta to write string quartet arrangements on The Very Thought Of You, Nature Boy and Sonny Rollins’ Valse Hot. And Spitzer responds in each setting with authority, clarity and a beautiful singing quality.

The spirit of his musical hero Stan Getz hovers over much of this session and is especially apparent on a beautiful bossa reading of George Gershwin’s Embraceable You and Jobim’s classic Triste. “Interestingly, my first lessons were at a studio in the East Bronx where Stan Getz took music lessons,” Spitzer recalls. “I never met him there, he was already gone, but his photograph was on the wall with some other star pupils there who achieved success. And I did take lessons with the same teacher that he had for a time, Bill Shiner. I was in junior high school at the time so this goes back quite a ways. But I remember Bill Shiner’s Music Studio on Southern Blvd. and Boston Rd. in the Bronx, right under the elevated train. The studio was one flight up and it always kind of interfered with your lessons to some degree when a train came by. But that’s how I learned how to play the saxophone.”

Another significant influence on Spitzer then and on his debut recording is Nat “King” Cole, the great pianist-vocalist who came up swinging with his trio in the late ‘30s and early ‘40s before morphing into a romantic balladeer (gaining a much wider audience in the process) in the post-World War II years. “My inspiration on both ‘The Very Thought Of You’ and ‘Nature Boy’ was Nat Cole,” he explains. “While it’s hard to convey his voice through an alto saxophone, that sound was in my head and what I was feeling when we recorded those two songs.” He also points to a Getz recording of “Nature Boy” with strings from a 1960 Verve album, Cool Velvet, as another inspiration for his reading of this tune.

Spitzer pays tribute to alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, whose tone was once described as “the sound of a dry martini,” on a relaxed reading of the title track from Desmond’s 1964 album, Bossa Antigua, which also featured guitar great Jim Hall. “It was my way of connecting with him and paying some respect to his sound,” says Spitzer. “In many ways he was maybe a bit underrated. He wasn’t a fantastic player in terms of technique but he had a sound, he had a vision, he had a lyrical sense, and he stuck with it. And to my ears, it was beautiful, it was creative, it was different than some of the other people who were around at the time.”

The supportive rhythm tandem of Matta and Zottarelli captures a quintessentially loose Brazilian feel on that soothing Desmond number and also on Matta’s relaxed This Is For Luisa, written for his wife. Guitarist Pinheiro solos persuasively on both of those engaging offerings.

Fellow saxophonists Spitzer and Allen display an easy interplay on Mobley’s swinger This I Dig Of You and also on Johnny Mercer’s “Early Autumn.” “The feeling was to have a kind of a dialogue together,” says Spitzer of his pairing with Allen. “And even though Harry has a more emphatic sound, not only because it’s a tenor but also because he’s such a strong player, there is still a kind of a sweetness and a communication happening. There’s a civility to it. It’s not one voice putting down the other but rather a kind of communicating,”

Spitzer and Allen also engage in some spirited exchanges of eights with drummer Steve Johns on “This I Dig Of You” and they create some intriguing harmonies through the head of Spitzer’s “Blues for Harry A,” a Monkish ditty written for the saxophonist’s son. “I love Harry’s playing, I like where his head’s at in terms of his sound and his feel and his freedom and his vocabulary, which is incredible. I’m very happy that he agreed to do this project and his participation on ‘Blues for Harry A’ made it more special for me. My son’s middle name is Aaron, so he’s Harry A. And Harry Allen is also Harry A. So it was kind of a nice coincidence.”

The closer, a rich reading of Rollins’ Valse Hot, opens with Shore cleverly alluding to the bridge of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in his string arrangement before the full band kicks off the theme of that buoyant jazz waltz.
There’s something sweet to savor on each track here. “Falando Docemente means ‘Speak Sweet’ in Portuguese,” explains Spitzer, “and that was really my idea for the theme of this CD — a romantic expression as well as a communication in a kind of civil and sweet way, referencing to some degree the great saxophonists and vocalists of the past.”

By referencing such greats as Getz, Desmond and Cole, you really can’t go wrong. Spitzer and his copacetic crew do justice to those jazz legends on this highly appealing (and long overdue) outing. — Bill Milkowski

Jazz and 21st Century Leadership: The Mastery Quest

Shared responsibility and leadership agility are essential to jazz music, as solo improvisation and support transfer among the players in service of swinging groove. This form of play and communication mirrors democratic values. Yet each ensemble member is responsible for self-development to become their very best to better flow with others who strive for the same.

This is a mastery quest.

Leadership in the 21st century is grounded in personal mastery in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual domains. As a jazz musician develops mastery in playing his or her instrument to best communicate with other players and an audience of listeners, leaders develop their character and communication skills, enabling others to strive for their very best—as individuals, in concert with others, and through organizations. This final session relates the principles and practices of the Jazz Leadership Project, co-founded by the series host, Greg Thomas.

STEVEN BERNSTEIN & SEXMOB

An impactful presence on the New York scene over the past 30 years, trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader Steven Bernstein has immersed himself in such a wide array of music that he defies categorization, shifting from New Orleans to hip-hop, modern jazz, rock, blues, and more with ease and finesse. A former member of the Lounge Lizards and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band, Bernstein has also composed works for film, theater, and dance in addition to doing arrangements for a diverse list of artists ranging from Lou Reed to Allen Toussaint, Linda Ronstadt, and Bill Frisell.

For this performance at the Union Arts Center, Steve brings in his longstanding group Sexmob with saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. This band remains his primary vehicle for exploring the unusual and rare instrument, the slide trumpet.  A long time Nyack resident with an enthusiastic local following, Steve’s performances are guaranteed to be entertaining, eclectic, and highly original musical delights.

TAEKO- Vocal

WILBUR’S WAREHOUSE
@ The
Bogardus Mansion, Dec. 1-2

Fostina Dixon headlines at new Tribeca club with
Winds of Change, featuring Ronnie Burrage,
Lonnie Plaxico, and Edsel Gomez

Big Apple jazz fans are in for a treat when the acclaimed Delaware-based saxophonist/singer Fostina Dixon appears at the historic Bogardus Mansion with her all-star band, Winds of Change.

A shining star of the New York jazz scene of the ’80s and ’90s, Fostina made a name for herself fronting her own bands on baritone, alto and soprano saxophones, as well as on flute and clarinet. The talented and versatile Saxophone Queen also demonstrated her prodigious skills backing masters such as Abbey Lincoln, Gerald Wilson, Melba Liston, Frank Foster, and Gil Evans.

Equally at home with jazz, R&B, pop, funk, and gospel, Fostina toured with Marvin Gaye for four years. She hired the youthful Ricky Minor to play bass in her band Collage, long before he became bandleader of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2010. And she played and raised her voice in song with James Blood Ulmer, Roy Ayers, and funky trumpeter Tom Browne. Prince was so impressed with a video of Fostina performing “Purple Rain” on alto sax at the famous Apollo Theater that he brought her to Minneapolis to play with him.

With the exposure came acclaim. In the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award-winning book American Women in Jazz: 1900 to the Present, author Sally Placksin described Fostina as “a player of impeccable control and skills with…highly independent ideas.” The saxophonist was judged “a true original” by D. Antoinette Hardy in her book Black Women in American Bands and Orchestras. Fostina received an Excellence in Jazz Performance award from Berklee College of Music, and a Eubie Blake “Emerging Artist” award presented by Dr. Billy Taylor, among other honors.

While maintaining a busy playing and touring schedule, Fostina earned a Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts, and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Wilmington University. She switched her focus from the stage to the classroom when she returned to her Delaware roots.

Just as she garne red critical acclaim and numerous honors for her composing and playing, the kudos didn’t stop when Fostina made the move to teaching. To cite just a few examples of the recognition she’s earned, Fostina has received a Christi Award for her contributions to promoting the arts in the community, an Outstanding Arts Educator award from the Board of Education, and an Outstanding Contributor award from the Council of Jazz Advocates.

Fostina also received grants for a student ensemble, the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band, which she founded to provide instruction and performing experience to students in grades 4 through 12, who are interested in jazz.

After almost two decades as an educator and advocate, Fostina is back in the spotlight. “I am now devoting most of my time to playing and performing, and am celebrating that part of my life with this special event at the Bogardus Mansion,” she says.

At the upcoming gig, listeners can look forward to hearing Fostina present a mix of jazz standards, her own brilliant arrangements of tunes by Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, and songs by her friend Abbey Lincoln. Count on Fostina to add in some of her originals, such as a tune or two from her recently released CD, Here We Go Again, which includes a tribute she penned honoring Marvin Gaye, “Prayer of Jabez.”

Fostina Dixon’s Winds of Change includes:

Drummer Ronnie Burrage is among the most recorded drummers in the history of jazz. He has performed with Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Frank Morgan, Wallace Roney, and a host of other jazz icons. Besides being an in-demand drummer, Ronnie is also an acclaimed composer, producer,  educator, and filmmaker.

Bassist Lonnie Plaxico has shared the stage and recording studio with countless giants of jazz such as Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Alice Coltrane, Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Woody Shaw, and others. Lonnie has also released several CDs as a leader, appeared on movie soundtracks, and TV shows.

Edsel Gomez (born August 9, 1962) is a Puerto Rican jazz pianist. In 2007, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for the album Cubist Music.[1] He arranged and directed Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Grammy-winning recording Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater. He has worked with Jack DeJohnette, Don Byron, Brian Lynch, and Eddie Palmieri After a research study promoted by the Philippine Heritage Library and Ayala Museum in Manila, Philippines, he began the Edsel Gomez World Fusion Band, which explores the fusion of Philippine traditional and tribal music with jazz and Afro Caribbean music.

Fostina shares a long history with each of the players and is looking forward to the musical magic they’re sure to cook up together during this all-too-rare NYC gig.

Announcing 2018 Lineup

Misha Tsiganov will join the stage on piano at Perez debut at APAP 2018 on January 14, at 4:30 p.m. showcase produced by Gail Boyd: at the Hilton Hotel 1335 6th Ave, New York, NY 10019-  Regent Parlor: 2nd floor

Catch vocalist Perez performing  a 25 minute highlight from her “Truth Concert,” featuring songs popularized by Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, Simon & Garfunkel and some original compositions.www.hipchickalert.com

This concert is a 90 minute show in full. Presented as a duo – this show can be booked as a duo -trio or quartet -The band is ready to go on the road with this concert.

Perez’s storytelling talents will be on full display as she presents the Truth concert – a collection of songs from great artists such as Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and others, as well as some of her own original compositions – all portraying feelings of love, truth, and conflict Singer, composer, recording artist. Concert producer and promoter. Photographer and foodie. The Harlem-born vocalist Perez can swing a standard, share a story through song, or nail a protest anthem. Her delivery is intimate enough to touch individual hearts and minds, and powerful enough to fill a concert hall.

With her current “Truth Concert,” the dynamic vocalist Perez shines the spotlight on stories through timeless tunes made famous by Nina Simone,Laura Nyro and her original compositions. The enduring messages of this carefully curated material resonated when first heard in the 1960s, and continue to be relevant today. Perez doesn’t shy away from taking a clear-eyed look at the current state of the world, but addresses the challenges we face with love and optimism, sincerely and joyously looking to a brighter future.

Perez spent her early years in foster care, an experience she credits with firmly rooting in her the improvisational skills so necessary for creating jazz. Her musical gifts were apparent virtually from the get-go: By age 4, Perez could hear a tune once and have total recall of both lyrics and melody. Despite her obvious affinity for music, she initially pursued the visual arts, moving to Los Angeles and building a thriving career as a photographer, designer, and stylist.

The vocalist’s impeccable musical taste developed while working in the art department at Paramount in Hollywood, sharing her space with a colleague who listened to jazz all day long. Mingus, Anita O’Day, Coltrane, and Bill Evans are just a few who made strong impressions, along with two divas who are perhaps Perez’s strongest influences: Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone. Her quest to discover and develop her own jazz voice led Perez to Europe, where she spent a decade studying with more established musicians, building a reputation as a singer, eventually leading a weekly session at Amsterdam’s highly regarded Bimhuis and performing in festivals across the continent.

Since returning to the Big Apple, her hometown, Perez has released three well-received albums—garnering kudos from the likes of the notoriously difficult to impress Stanley Crouch. She captivates and challenges listeners with her sultry and direct style, and continues to build an enthusiastic following. Perez’s inspirational life story would make a great book, and it’s easy to predict that some of the best chapters have yet to be written.

Musicians

Takaaki Otomo-Piano

Noriko Ueda-Bass,

Jared Schonig-Drums

Composer Bernard Hoffer first heard jazz pianist Takaaki Otomo at a restaurant in New York and was impressed by his musicality, dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense. With bass player Noriko Ueda and drummer Jared Schonig, Takaaki selected five originals, four jazz standards plus one Broadway show tune and two novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets for this recording. Beginning his training as a classical pianist Takaaki switched to jazz when he was a teenager and won first prize in a jazz competition in Japan in 2007. He moved to New York City in 2014. Originally from Japan Noriko Ueda began playing the electric bass, then switching to upright bass at age 18. She is a graduation of the Berklee College of Music where she majored in jazz composition. She has her own trio and quartet and has performed at the Blue Note Jazz Club. She won the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize in 2002. Hailing from Los Angeles, drummer Jared Schonig studied at Eastman where he won seven Downbeat Student Music Awards. A favorite among vocalists, Schonig tours with Grammy Award-winners Kurt Ellling and The New York Voices. He is in demand as a drummer for studio recordings and session work.

Born and raised in Kobe, Japan, Takaaki Otomo started the classical piano at the age of five. When he was 15 years old, he changed to jazz music, listening to the music of Oscar Peterson. He was taught by the pianist, Tadao Kitano, who is a famous music teacher in Kobe. In 2007, he won first prize in a jazz competition in Kobe. He belongs to the group Gingerbread Boys, which plays at a number of venues in Kansai area. In 2014, he moved to New York City.

He has released a number of CDs as a leader and sideman as well. In 2008 his first CD Nightmare was released with Otomo as leader. During his career in Japan, he has performed with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Lewis Nash.

He has been influenced by Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Fred Hersch and Brad Mehldau.

A pianist friend commented that only in New York can you find a local restaurant that serves elegant food and elegant jazz. It was in that venue that I first heard Takaaki play. Even on his abbreviated keyboard I could sense his musicality, his dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense.

That first night I thought this could make a fine trio recording with Noriko Ueda on bass. What I learned later, when he was on a grand piano, was his technical proficiency. To complete the trio Noriko introduced me to Jared Schonig, who as it turned out attended the same school (Eastman) as I did.

We selected five originals, four jazz standards, plus one Broadway show tune (Takaaki’s suggestion) and two Novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

The originals include two exquisite tunes by Takaaki, a beautiful LullWater by Noriko, and two of my tunes written for this project. I first heard them play Brubeck’s Your Own Sweet Way in the club and loved the way they played it. For an up tempo, Neil Hefti’s Repetition though we miss Charlie Parker’s great solo. I thought John Lewis’s Django deserved another hearing, and, because we needed something languid, Thad Jones’s lovely To You, which works quite well as a trio, though sans Thad’s beautiful orchestral textures.

At the time of putting this project together the film The Martian was a big hit in theaters, which gave me the idea to use Holst. What was interesting, was that Holst’s harmonies gave us a fresh aspect when used to play jazz upon them.

From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends’
shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites

Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this brand-new CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.

Equally comfortable on both trumpet and flugelhorn, leader Chris Pasin has proved himself among the most versatile of musicians. Besides fronting his own bands, he’s been a mainstay of ensembles led by the likes of Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin, George Russell, and Brother Jack McDu . Pasin has also appeared with legendary gures including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Ray Charles, to name a few.

For Baby, It’s Cold Outside, Pasin has assembled a stellar ensemble of some of the most in-demand musicians on the New York jazz scene. Among them: pianist Armen Donelian (Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D’Rivera); bassists Ira Coleman (Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Herbie Hancock) and Rich Syracuse (Mose Allison, Bernard Purdy, Kurt Elling); drummer Je Siegel (Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan); singer Patricia Dalton Fennell (Dave Holland, Giacomo Gates, Pete Levin); and guitarist Peter Einhorn (Joe Lovano, Placido Domingo, Jim Hall).

Highlights from Baby, It’s Cold Outside include:
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”: Here’s a subtle, sensitive and understated version of a classic that steers clear of the overly sentimental, right from Donelian’s heart-felt piano opener. “We Three Kings”: Uptempo and bursting with energy, the band brings great drive and brilliant feeling to this beloved carol, which features an excellent solo from leader Pasin. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”: Check out the sexy and playful collaboration between Pasin and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell. The twosome demonstrate their wit and camaraderie as they work their seductive skills on the lyrics. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”: A very welcome new take on a traditional tune turns it into a cooker; the great rhythmic drive makes it downright danceable. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”: Pasin and Einhorn shine on solos in this unique treatment of a 1940s-vintage hit.

Pasin and friends’ fresh take on the greatest songs of the season celebrate the beloved classics in an original and vastly appealing style. Listeners will enjoy old favorites in a new way this holiday season, thanks to the great renditions performed by this talented and creative ensemble.

At age 23, Veronica Swift is now being recognized around the country as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene.

In the fall of 2015, she won second place at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.  In 2016 she was asked to perform a concert of her own at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York City and she was a guest artist with Michael Feinstein at Jazz at Lincoln Center with the Tedd Firth Big Band and Marilyn Maye and Freda Payne.   Veronica’s first appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center was at age 11 when she performed at the “Women in Jazz” series at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

In the summer of 2016 she headlined at the Telluride Jazz Festival, her 10th appearance there – but her first as a headliner.  She first appeared there at age 10 with Dave Adams’ Young Razzcals Jazz Project and the great saxophonist Richie Cole and later she sang a duet with the featured artist, Paquito d’Rivera.

Veronica finished her undergraduate degree (BM in Jazz Voice) at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in December 2016, where she was a full scholarship student.  It was after that that she moved to New York City, where she was almost immediately started performing every Saturday night at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club, a gig she continues to maintain when she isn’t on the road.

Veronica has been on tour with her parents, renowned jazz pianist Hod O’Brien and celebrated jazz singer and educator/author Stephanie Nakasian.  She has appeared on stage with Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, Bob Dorough, Kim Nazarian, Danilo Perez, and others.  With her family she has appeared at Blues Alley Jazz Club in DC, the Jazz Standard in NYC, the Jazz Cruise, and for the New Jersey and Hilton Head Jazz Societies.

She has appeared at SF Performing Arts Center, Rochester Jazz Festival and tours regularly with Grammy Winner/Trumpeter Chris Botti including special guest appearances on his entire upcoming Blue Note engagement for 5 weeks from mid-December to January.

Veronica recorded two CDs as a child – one at age 9 with Richie Cole and her father’s rhythm section and her mother, and one at age 13 with saxophonist Harry Allen.

Her 2015 Album “Lonely Woman” features some of the hottest young jazz players on the scene including Emmet Cohen, Benny Bennack III, Daryl Johns (with whom she shared the Grammy Choir/Band experience), Matt Wigler, and Scott Lowrie.

In addition to performing the Great American Songbook and Bebop and Vocalese classics, Veronica is also a passionate devotee of 20s and 30s music and has sung with Vince Giordano, Terry Waldo, and Drew Nugent.

Veronica recently returned from opening the Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Club Dizzy’s in Shanghai, China and also recently sang the National Anthem at Madison Square Garden for the NY Rangers.

Her next album is scheduled for a 2018 release and will feature the great pianist Benny Green and his trio.
