DIANE MARINO
“SOUL SERENADE-the Gloria Lynne Project”

“Soul Serenade” “is the title of my newest CD project. Although not exactly a “tribute” album, it is more of a celebration of the music made popular by the great vocalist, Gloria Lynne.

While performing on a recent gig with drummer Vince Ector (Gloria’s drummer for 15 years), I sang “I’m Glad There Is You”, and he reminded me it was one of Gloria’s signature songs. So, I began to research more of Gloria’s work and was instantly mesmerized by her voice, style and emotion. Additionally, her choice of material was instantly appealing to me. I tend to look for songs that are “beyond the norm” of the Great American Songbook repertoire. The songs Gloria Lynne recorded during her career stand alone in their originality and uniqueness. Her performances of these particular tunes move me every time I hear them.

As with my previous CD’s, I always learn a tune and then work with it at the piano, making it an extension of what I’m hearing and feeling from the lyric and melody. I should note that I had never heard any of these 14 tunes before I was introduced to them by the wonderful Gloria Lynne recordings. My “concepts” for these 14 tunes came about after much study, deliberation and changes!

I wanted to step away from the piano for this project in order to collaborate with someone else’s ideas that could influence the way I might want to sing a particular song. I feel that when you accompany yourself on piano the two elements are inseparable and it was time to do a project in a different way.

I asked my dear friend Brad Cole to take my concepts and write the arrangements and orchestrations as well as to play piano/keyboards on this project. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted to do with each of these songs. I think we’ve come up with a fresh approach to this material that Gloria Lynne’s recordings influenced me to explore and ultimately record!”

Love… Diane

SAMMY NESTICO: THE MUSIC, THE MAN, THE AMERICAN DREAM

New documentary film on 94 year old Sammy Nestico entitled “Shadow Man” profiles the jazz and big band giant. Led The Count Basie Orchestra, the White House Orchestra, Airmen of Note, worked with countless icons from the shadows.

Film 16 years in the making; campaign to finish now live on Kickstarter

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 18, 2018) –  SHADOW MAN – The Sammy Nestico Story is a feature-length documentary film that explores the music, art, humanity, impact, and life of Sammy Nestico. It’s a story the filmmaker – diane estelle Vicari – wants to tell and a legacy she wants to preserve.

“Over the past century, Sammy Nestico has been a giant contributor to the world of music,” says Vicari, “a true maestro – as a composer, orchestrator, writer, and arranger across the genres of classical, jazz, and big band sounds. He is also a quiet giant, helping to mold careers of musicians, some considered icons. He often worked behind the scenes … like a shadow. That’s the basis for the title of the film.”

Vicari adds that Sammy’s greatest musical love has been working with youngsters and students pursuing their dream. He loves being an educator and mentor. She says his impact in this area is virtually unmatched.

Sammy Nestico recently turned 94 years young. His most recent Grammy nomination came only a year ago, at the age of 93. For over 70 years, he has plied his craft selflessly, and always with a smile.

During a 70+ year career, Sammy was the music arranger for the U.S. Air Force Band, the U.S. Marine Band, and leader of the White House Orchestra. He arranged music and led the Count Basie Orchestra for 17 years – picking up where his good friend Quincy Jones left off. Four of the 10 albums he arranged for Basie went on to win Grammy’s. He has served as a professor at the University of Georgia, and directed music programs at numerous universities. He arranged and conducted projects for Sarah Vaughan, Phil Collins, Toni Tennille, Barbra Streisand, Michael Bublé, and many others. He worked on countless films, and over 70 television programs including Mission: Impossible, Mannix, and Charlie’s Angels. He wrote commercial jingles for Zenith, Ford, Mattel, and Anheuser Busch, to name a few. He is the author of The Complete Arranger, an influential text in the field of music education. To this day, there remain over 600 numbers published by Sammy Nestico still regularly used by schools in their classrooms. And Sammy still loves to pick up a trombone, reminiscent of his days as a master trombonist for Gene Krupa, Charlie Barnet, and Tommy Dorsey.

The late, great jazz journalist and educator Dr. Herb Wong said: “Sammy Nestico is a wizard. He is a masterful teacher who combines technique, strategy, enthusiasm, humor, humility, and humanity to reach music students in a way that few others ever have.”

“The film is also a profile in Americana, and the post-Depression American Dream,” says Vicari. “Sammy grew up in the heartland, was the man of the house at 10, was a self-taught musician, became a master arranger in the Big Band Era, and always put music and musical sounds above ego and image. It’s an honor and a privilege for me to tell his story and I am proud to have become a good friend with Sammy and his wife Shirley.”

Vicari and her husband, multi-Grammy winning producer Tommy Vicari, have financed the film from limited funds over a 16 year period. Sammy is now 94. In an effort to finish the film hopefully so Sammy can see it, she launched a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter http://kck.st/2EWQVC2. “Sammy is active in the process,” says Vicari. “He watches the crowd funding campaign and responds to comments from fans on Facebook, and he loves it. It is wonderful to see.” She adds that Sammy has also helped by signing limited edition collectibles to augment the “rewards” on the Kickstarter page.

The campaign is mostly funded, and ends on March 29.

Filmmaker Vicari lives in Los Angeles, Sammy in Northern San Diego County. Sammy is available for phone interviews. The Kickstarter is at http://kck.st/2EWQVC2.

Imagine hanging out with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, hearing them jam together, trading riffs, then riffing with words and trading stories.  Bird and Diz are gone, but giants still walk among us. One of those giants is Buster Williams. Buster has played with everyone, from Sarah Vaughan to Miles Davis, Nancy Wilson, Art Blakey, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and on. Join Buster as he tells stories about his life and the lives of other great jazz musicians, and is joined by, and plays with, some of the greatest living contributors to this music – Benny Golson, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Reid, Christian McBride, Larry Willis, Carmen Lundy, Kenny Barron and Lenny White.

We need your support to make this film a reality. If you dig this music and Buster, please consider making a contribution to our film, however large or small.

NEW JAZZ BOOK FROM
Equinox Publishing

This is Hip: The Life of Mark Murphy
by Peter Jones

A 360-degree perspective on Mark Murphy’s uniqueness and authenticity. I liked the clear narrative and Peter Jones’ probing, questioning approach; and the section on Murphy’s uninhibited, no-safety-net teaching methods is unputdownable.
Sebastian Scotney, editor of London Jazz News

With publication coinciding with Mark Murphy’s birthday on March 14, Equinox is proud to announce This is Hip: The Life of Mark Murphy by jazz singer and journalist Peter Jones.

When Mark Murphy died in October 2015, the world lost one of the greatest jazz singers in history. Murphy was the last of his kind, a hipster of the Kerouac generation, who rejected the straight life of prosperity and numb consumerism. With a catalog of more than 40 albums under his own name, Mark Murphy was a consummate improviser, who never sang a song the same way twice. He could have enjoyed a successful mainstream career in the vein of Mel Tormé or Jack Jones. But his ambition was greater – to be an artist, to rebel against the commercial music industry and to carry the jazz vocal flame wherever it led him.

Murphy was a master of scat and vocalese, of songwriting and the spoken word. He expanded the jazz singing repertoire, adding his own lyrics to instrumentals like John Coltrane’s Naima, Freddie Hubbard’s Red Clay, and Oliver Nelson’s Stolen Moments.
Unrivaled as an interpreter of ballads, he was able to express longing and regret to a degree lacking in any other jazz singer.

For years he roamed the world, playing thousands of gigs. Rediscovered in the Eighties by a new audience of jazz dancers, and again in the 21st century by a digital generation who invited him to guest on their recordings, he remains a crucial though unjustly neglected figure in vocal jazz.

This Is Hip is more than a biography: it also explores Murphy’s innovative approaches both to singing and to the teaching of singers. Based on numerous interviews with those who knew him best, the book delves into a performing and recording career that spanned 60 years and earned him five Grammy nominations.

Peter Jones is a jazz singer and journalist based in London. During the making of his first album, One Way Ticket to Palookaville, he developed a serious interest in the work of Mark Murphy, which has continued ever since. He reviews concerts and CDs and conducts interviews for London Jazz News. His second album Utopia was released in 2016 and his third Under the Setting Sun in 2017.

Of Gene Lees’ Jazzletter
Is Now Online

Gene Lees (1928-2008) was a journalist, novelist, lyricist, vocalist, and a perceptive writer on music in general, and jazz in particular. Born in Canada, he began as a journalist there, came to the USA and wrote on the arts in the Louisville Times, was editor of Down Beat from 1959 to 1961, and a contributing editor at Stereo Review and then High Fidelity during the 1960s, where he became a mentor for me, because he wrote so well about the things that he loved. Gene’s entry in my Encyclopedia has a fuller list of his accomplishments:

View Gene’s entry here.

In 1981, tired of working for commercial publishers, whose advertising departments often called the shots, Gene began publishing his monthly Jazzletter. It was highly regarded by musicians and critics alike for its treasure trove of interviews and personal recollections of encounters with musicians and songwriters of the “Great American Songbook”, many of whom were his friends: Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, Johnny Mercer, and many more; and for his sharp and opinionated musings on American popular music and any number of related societal subjects. He wrote most of the Jazzletter himself, but invited a number of musicians and critics to contribute, such as Mike Zwerin, Bobby Scott, Bill Crow, Grover Sales, Dick Sudhalter, and more.

Though some of his writing for the Jazzletter was collected in several (sometimes award-winning) books, much of it has remained out of print, including some historical analysis (a prime example being his six-part essay A Death in the Family: The Rise and Fall of the American Song, which begins in the issue of February 1992). Another contributor to the Jazzletter was Claude Neuman, a friend of Gene’s, a huge fan of the greatest American lyrics, and himself a meticulous translator of poetry. With the help of some friends, Claude and I have compiled a set of the Jazzletter, and here it is complete, for the benefit of future generations of music lovers.

The first issue was August 1981. Gene sometimes fell behind, and suffered ill- health: 1985 stops with July; February/March 1994 and July/August 2005 are each combined in one issue; there were no issues in 2006, when Gene had heart surgery, and publication stopped in November 2008. A note on copyright: this is a purely non-commercial endeavor. We have been unable to make contact with Gene’s family, but should they wish to upload or publish the Jazzletter themselves, we would gladly pass the torch to them.

The Music Kept Them Alive…
And Killed Them!

THEY DIED BEFORE 40 (93 minutes)
– a new jazz film to make history

View The Trailer

Which jazz musician’s funeral attracted 10,000 mourners and an 80-car funeral procession?

Which African American musician was forced to play at the other end of the recording studio with white musicians?

The website for the film has 40 Hot Points and more (http://jazzdeaths.weebly.com).

More than two dozen gifted jazz artists died before reaching the age of 40. Most of them are relatively unknown, some even to jazz fans. Many of them made significant contributions to this art form. All of them had much more to give and, individually and collectively, would have made a greater impact on this music had they lived full lives. It is important that their contributions be made known, their music heard and that we show how and why they died.

Many people may have heard of Bix Beiderbecke (who died at 28) and Charlie Parker (who died at 34). But others, such as Herschel Evans, who died before reaching 30, are very little known and their stories untold. For example, Jo Jones, drummer and an integral part of the Count Basie band for many years, has called Evans the greatest musician he ever played with. He said that Evans made everyone he played with better.

Who was this giant, what made him an important creative artist, how and why did he die so young? These are questions that this film will answer concerning Evans and many more. In addition to Evans also featured will be Bunny Berigan, Chick Webb, Fats Waller, Charlie Christian, Jimmy Blanton, Clifford Brown and Chu Berry. About two dozen others’ ages and causes of death are included.

Through their music, some archival film footage, photographs, reminiscences and expert discourse we learn more about these artists, develop an appreciation of their artistry and reveal how and why their careers were cut short.

The film expands our cultural heritage for this internationally renowned art form and also helps us to understand the unique lifestyle that these artists led.

Financing is sought for music licensing.

Please forward this to anyone else you think might be interested.

Multi-Instrumentalist
Willie Oteri
and Dark Matter Horns
Release “Evolution”

One never knows what the multifaceted original Willie Oteri is going to do next, like switching his focus from guitar to saxophone and flute for a series of upcoming releases. Oteri has produced several well received guitar based albums featuring some of the worlds finest musicians including, Scott Amendola, Giko Pavan, Tony Levin, J.A. Deane and others, starting with the 1999 live in studio improvisation Jazz Gunn Concepts of MateMaToot which featured A-Team Austin jazz players Brannen Temple, Michael Malone, Chris Maresh, and second guitarist Chris Tondre. After Concepts of MateMaToot, Oteri was driven to record more improvised releases like the uniquely original 2003 release Spiral Out produced by Ronan Chris Murphy which featured prog rockers Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto and Mike Keneally in a free improvised jazz setting with trumpet master Ephraim Owens, two critically acclaimed Avant Garde based WD-41 albums followed with electric trumpet player Dave Laczko, the second incorporating the talents of Dino J.A. Deane and drummer Scott Amendola followed by Shrunken Head Shop a series of live recordings from a tour with Laczko and top German and Italian jazz musicians.

Oteri has always been a multi-instrumentalist, as he says, “Isn’t every musician, really?”  Having a musical mother helped with violins and a piano always available in the home. After a stint performing with a ukulele on a local pier in his early teens, later incorporating a flute borrowed from his sister, he then focused on bass to work with a local high school band soon after switching to guitar and pedal steel while doubling on sax and flute. Oteri put sax and flute on the back burner in the late ’80s partially due to an unforeseen tragedy which took nearly 10 years out of his career. Oteri decided to pick up both sax and flute again just over a year ago. (see the full story at www.willieoteri.com)

Oteri brings us his unique styling on sax and flute with a series of recordings, joining longtime friend Dave Laczko on electrified trumpet and veteran drummer Steve Mankenberg along with various guest artists on his own label OteriTunes. The series will be featured as an ever evolving album of of live and studio recordings titled Evolution available at bandcamp.com and a series of EP albums titled Narratives in both digital and a limited number of CD formats through CDbaby.

The Bandcamp release Evolution is online now and available for streaming and download at:

https://wd-41.bandcamp.com/

The EP releases will start in May of 2018 through various outlets connected to Cdbaby.com

PLANET ARTS RECORDINGS
BAREFOOT DANCES AND OTHER VISIONS
JIM MCNEELY AND THE FRANKFURT RADIO BIG BAND

www.planetarts.org/barefoot-dances.html

Barefoot Dances and Other Visions is a seven-part suite composed in 2014 for the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Each piece expresses a different kind of fantasy. We performed it live in two concerts in Frankfurt February ’14, then recorded it in the studio in September of that year.

When I wrote this music I had been working with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band for about six years, so I knew the players quite well. The suite was written so that every one of the band’s soloists is placed in a framework that would be both familiar and challenging. Each piece features a pair of soloists, playing individually, sometimes together. Several of the pieces begin with a chamber-sized group, “in front of the curtain”. Then the curtain rises to reveal the whole band, having assumed yet another formation.

Bob’s Here imagines the return of composer/trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, who died in 2011. Black Snow conjures up the vision of a normally tranquil scene, still tranquil but rendered improbably dark. Barefoot Dances are just that, something I’ve never actually done in my life. A Glimmer of Hope tries its best to be optimistic, a difficult task these days. Redman Rides Again imagines the return of the arranger/reedman Don Redman. Among other things he was known for writing fantastic clarinet trios. This piece features a real clarinet trio, and a second “trio” formed by Oliver Leicht and his harmonized clarinet. Falling Upwards: try as I may, I still find it impossible. The Cosmic Hodge-Podge offers a vision of the cosmos where galaxies are replaced by blocks of sound; super novas become solo explosions; and a single black hole emerges at the end, emitting just a smidgen of light.     Jim McNeely

Festival website
with short soundtracks and detailed event schedule.

SARASOTA, FL: Jazz, the uniquely American musical art form, was born in New Orleans in the early 20th century and nurtured on a lively diet of music from around the world–the blues of the American South, rhythms from Africa and the Caribbean, classical music from Europe and France, and more. It’s entirely fitting, then, that the Jazz Club of Sarasota–one of the most active jazz societies in the nation–will present “A World of Jazz” for its 38th Annual Sarasota Jazz Festival. The four-day event, from March 7-10, 2018, will feature 14 musicians from seven nations in four concerts, over a dozen locally based musicians for a Pub Crawl by Trolley, and the French art film Django. In addition, at one of the concerts the Club will present its highest honor, the Satchmo Award, to a musician for “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz.” Festival activities will be presented in various Sarasota venues including Marriott’s new Art Ovation Hotel, downtown Sarasota night clubs and Burns Court Cinema. Live jazz will fill the lobby before each concert, and four special VIP receptions—for those who purchase VIP ticket packages–will add to the luster of this star-studded festival.

“We’re pleased to recognize the global impact of jazz, and we’re especially honored that the celebrated Ken Peplowski, one of our audience favorites, is the festival’s music director,” said Peg Pluto, Jazz Club president. “We’re also delighted that our vice president, Ed Linehan, is managing director for the festival. Ken and Ed have both worked with our festivals before so we know we’re in good hands.

“In keeping with our theme, Ken will present the world of jazz as interpreted by internationally respected musicians and fast-rising young stars from around the world,” Pluto said. “Many of them have never played together before, and they may never share the same stage again. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.”

Acclaimed reedman Peplowski, based in New York, will both direct the international cadre and frequently join them on stage. “These accomplished performers will play the universal language of jazz, an American language that everyone now speaks,” he said. “They’ll draw on musical influences from their homeland countries—Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden and the United States—to present the exciting sound of what jazz has become today.”

Ken has designed a playbook of two sets for every concert, each with a different mix of performers. “We’ll present unique combinations of musicians for every set with a fresh sound for each segment,” he said. He’ll also add another treat: “After each concert, we’ll bring back all of the evening’s musicians for an All-Star jam session number or two—an improvised finale that takes us right into the very essence of jazz.”
Peplowski has been highly praised and frequently honored. “Ken Peplowski is arguably the greatest living jazz clarinetist,” said Russell Davies of BBC2. Will Friedwald (The Wall Street Journal) wrote, “Mr. Peplowski sounds the way (Benny) Goodman might if he had kept evolving … polishing his craft . . . into the 21st century.”

Among other credits, Ken has been a featured performer at practically every significant jazz festival, was music director of the Oregon Festival of American Music for eight years, has backed dozens of major performers, and has recorded some 50 CDs as a soloist and nearly 500 more as a sideman. He has also been a frequent performer for the Jazz Club of Sarasota, often with Dick Hyman, and in 2014 received the Club’s highest honor, its Satchmo Award, for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz.” (Other Jazz Club Satchmo winners since 1990 have included Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Ella Fitzgerald, Dick Hyman, Branford Marsalis and Family, Four Freshmen, Bucky and John Pizzarelli, and Wycliffe Gordon.)
In addition to Peplowski, several other musicians will make encore appearances with the Jazz Club of Sarasota. These include Houston Person, saxophone; Diego Figueiredo, guitar; and Jeff Hamilton, drums.
The festival’s house band is the Scandinavian Jazztrio:

  • Writer/musician/composer Kristian Leth (Denmark), drums; a Danish Academy Award-nominated film composer and Grammy-winning recording artist who has written, performed and produced scores for TV series, films and commercials.
  • Hans Backenroth (Sweden), bass; acclaimed as “one of the best bass players Sweden has developed—ever!” (Arne Domnérus, Swedish jazz legend).
  • Ole Kock Hansen (Denmark), piano; “one of the most significant artists in modern Danish Jazz” (Wikipedia).

“Some of our festival musicians currently reside in the United States as well as abroad. We’ve hand-picked performers who beautifully understand and represent the musical influences they bring from their countries of origin,” Peplowski said. In addition to the Scandinavian Jazztrio, festival musicians (in alphabetical order) are:

  •  Ehud Asherie, piano, Israel; “a master of swing and stride” (New Yorker); a jazz pianist who integrates the New York piano tradition with his inventive style.
  • Graham Dechter, guitar, U. S.; honored in the DownBeat Critics Poll as “Rising Star Guitar” (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017).
  • Sinne Eeg, vocalist, Denmark; considered the preeminent jazz vocalist in Scandinavia.
  • Diego Figueiredo, guitar, Brazil; a fast-rising star among the world’s greatest jazz guitarists; plays with an infectious, joyful feeling.
  • Jimmy Greene, saxophone, U.S.; GRAMMY® Award-nominated saxophonist, composer, and arranger.
  • Jeff Hamilton, drums, U.S; known for his versatility as a drummer, composer, arranger, and educator; leads his own trio and performs with other respected groups including the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.
  • Chiara Izzi, vocals, Italy; described by JazzTimes as “a talent to be heard, admired and anticipated.”
  • Jeremy Pelt, trumpet, U.S.; featured by Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal; voted “Rising Star – Trumpet” for five years by DownBeat and the Jazz Journalists Association.
  • Houston Person, saxophone, U.S.; a “rock-solid, full-toned” musician, recording artist and winner of the Eubie Blake Award.
  • Akiko Tsuruga, organ, Japan; called “Queen of the Organ”; winner of the 2017 Hothouse Magazine Jazz Award for Best Organist.

Ropeadope Records signs singer/songwriter/spoken word artist Tony Adamo

Ropeadope Records signs singer/songwriter/spoken word artist Tony Adamo

Louis Marks CEO at Ropeadope Records signs singer/songwriter/spoken word artist Tony Adamo.  Tony Adamo’s music producer Mike Clark has also been signed to Ropeadope  Records.  Mike Clark is of Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters fame.  Tony Adamo’s first CD release on Ropeadope will be on October 19th, 2018.
https://ropeadope.com/about/

Jazz and the spoken word have always had a symbiotic relationship. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti pioneered the beat poet landscape of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. But what of modern day offerings in this genre?

Tony Adamo has been described as a beatnik who arrived sixty years late, but if you ask him, he’s just a raconteur who describes his environment in a unique manner. Adamo celebrates urban life and the jazz masters who have influenced generations with hip monologues recited over the intense rhythms laid down by his New York Crew, headed by drummer Mike Clark.
“Mike is the Scorsese and I’m the Bobby De Niro,” says Tony. “Sometimes I go into the recording studio, I don’t know what I’m going to do or what I’m going to say, and Mike is standing behind the glass. He points to me, and then I’m off. And it’s really a magical thing, because his groove sets the stage for me!”
Although born in the Bay Area, Adamo has spent a lot of time in New York and his cadence and wit reflect his love and respect for the Big Apple. “Once you go to the Apple, man, it doesn’t leave you, it’s in your veins.   In fact, all the cats that made me what I am today are cats from New York; Mike and this whole crew that he put together.”
Adamo generally salutes the work of jazz masters such as Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Gerry Mulligan, and Joe Henderson, but he’s also very serious about raising people’s consciousness regarding some of the idiom’s unsung heroes, like Bay Area trumpeter Eddie Gale.
Tony Adamo is an original voice. A voice that keeps reaching for new directions in describing a music without boundaries and its fascinating makers.

Gary G. Vercelli

Jazz Music Director Gary Vercelli produces CapRadio’s terrestrial and online jazz programming, including JazzStream.org. He also hosts Excellence In Jazz and Acid Jazz

Tony Adamo isn’t one to go unnoticed by the jazz and funk greats who have recorded with him to include James Gadson, Michael Wolff, Eddie Henderson, Kenneth Nash, Richie Goods, Donald Harrison, Bill Summers, Tower Of Power Horns,Lenny White,Mike LeDonne,Jack Wilkins,Roger Smith,Paul Jackson,Delbert Bump, Mike Clark, Mic Gillette, Skip
Mesquite, Doc Kupka,Mark Murphy, Blackbyrd Mcknight,Tim Ouimette,Steve Gadd, and Ernie Watts.

Actor-Singer-Dancer ANDRÉ De SHIELDS and Renowned Jazz Artist SHEILA JORDAN
Among the Honorees at the
33rd ANNUAL BISTRO AWARDS GALA

Monday, March 12, 6:30 pm at Gotham Comedy Club

Marta Sanders, Shemekia Copeland,
and Will and Peter Anderson

Also Recognized Among the 15 Award Winners

(New York City, January 31, 2018) —Tony and Drama Desk nominee and multi-Audelco Award winner André De Shields and internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan are among the artists who will be honored at the 33rd Annual Bistro Awards Gala on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 pm at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd St. As is the Bistro Award tradition, the evening will feature performances by all of the winners.

Mr. De Shields is receiving the Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award. The actor-singer-dancer-choreographer made his mark on Broadway in the title role of The Wiz, which was followed by the long-running Ain’t Misbehavin’, Stardust: The Mitchell Parish Musical, Play On!, and The Full Monty. He embraced cabaret early on. Beginning in the ’70s, he created a string of original shows that performed at such landmark New York clubs as Gypsy’s, the Grand Finale, Reno Sweeney, Les Mouches, the Club at La MaMa, the Horn of Plenty, Greene Street, as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London. In 1984, he co-wrote, choreographed, co-directed, and starred in the Broadway musical revue Andre De Shields’ Haarlem Nocturne. More recent appearances have included Joe’s Pub and the Laurie Beechman Theatre.

Because of her lifelong dedication to music as a unique and influential jazz vocalist, interpreter, songwriter, teacher, and mentor, Ms. Jordan is being honored for Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Jazz. Legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker, a great influence on her, would introduce her as “the singer with the million dollar ears.” Her trademarks are her uncompromising style, her ability to improvise lyrics, and unexpected sweeping changes of pitch. Her preference for bass and voice led to her collaboration with bassist Cameron Brown, with whom she has been touring internationally for over 20 years. She is a recipient of a 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship, and is the subject of Jazz Child: A Portrait of Sheila Jordan by Ellen Johnson, which was described by the Huffington Post as a “truly American success story.”

A New York cabaret artist since the ’70s, Marta Sanders is being recognized for her Consummate Cabaret Artistry. Acclaimed early in her career, her artistry has grown thrillingly since then, and now her performances can be viewed as master classes in the art of song interpretation.

Blues singer Shemekia Copeland is the recipient of the Bistro’s first Producer’s Award. Daughter of blues guitarist-singer Johnny Copeland, she displays a powerful, gutsy voice that can also be soft and sultry, and has an uncanny ability to connect to her audience with both songs and stories.

This year’s Ira Eaker Special Achievement Award—given to an outstanding performer on the rise and named after Back Stage’s co-founder, co-publisher, and first nightclub critic—goes to Mary Sue Daniels, who made her New York cabaret debut with a show that charmingly captures her growing-up years in Montana through her straightforward, persuasive delivery of personal anecdotes and an impeccable selection of songs.

The multi-Bistro Award-winning singer Jeff Harnar this year gets the nod as Outstanding Director for his ability to shape shows that score solidly as entertainments while at the same time doing justice to the performers’ expression of emotion and exploration of character.

Lisa Yaeger is being acknowledged as Outstanding Vocalist not only for her impressive vocal ability, but also for the subtlety of her interpretations and for being able to handle a diversity of musical genres with natural ease.

Recipient of our Outstanding Singer-Instrumentalist Award, Rachelle Garniez plays accordion, guitar, bells, and piano, sometimes making them sound like extensions of her own similarly versatile voice, and her original songs are as fresh and delightful as are her performances.

The Bistro’s Outstanding Instrumentalists Award is being presented to twin brothers who will surely knock your socks off when you hear them playing either jazz saxophone or clarinet. Peter and Will Anderson bring a fresh perspective to classic jazz and have performed extensively with some of the top jazz musicians at some of the top jazz venues in the country.

Salty Brine is one of the most unique artists the Committee has ever seen. The show he wrote and performed in 2017 was in part a discussion of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, in part a performance of the songs on a Harry Nilsson album, and in part a recollection of Salty’s youthful experiences at a boys’ camp–all woven together to create an unforgettable cabaret/theatrical experience. The Bistros are recognizing his talent with an Award for Creative Artistry.

The theme of Amy Beth Williams‘s show Carried Away is war, and while the enterprise contains a number of songs related to armed combat, she takes a far broader view of the conflicts between people; the result is a vibrant tapestry of human experience, which is being honored as Outstanding Theme show.

Songwriters were the focus of two shows that caught the Bistro Committee’s attention. Thank You for Your Love: Our Celebration of Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt is being honored as Outstanding Tribute Show. Starring Carole Demas and Sarah Rice (both of whom played Luisa in the original production of The Fantasticks), directed by Charles Repole, and with accompaniment by musical director Joe Goodrich on piano and Maria Banks on harp and illuminating projections by producer Stuart J. Allyn, it is rich with marvelous singing, trenchant song interpretations, and a great deal of heart. And the songwriting team of Ben Schaechter and Dan Kael wrote It Helps to Sing About It, the Bistro Awards’ pick for Outstanding Revue. Under the savvy guidance of director Sara Louise Lazarus, this smart, joyous entertainment puts one in mind of the golden time when sparkling revues of original material were a staple of the theatre and club scene.

In his A Life Behind Bars, being honored as Outstanding Solo Play, writer-actor Dan Ruth delivers a compelling story in a funny, heartfelt, and at times touching account of his struggles to make it as an actor in New York by tending bar. To top it off, he brilliantly plays all the crazy and mad characters he meets along the way.

Finally, making an Outstanding New York Debut with her show Significant Others, Katie McGrath relates her personal story through words and songs that flow seamlessly and winningly together.

For the sixth year in a row, Shellen Lubin is directing the Bistro Awards evening. A theatre director, playwright, songwriter, and vocal and acting coach, Shellen is also in the forefront of attaining parity for women in the arts.

The gala event will be held on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 pm at Gotham Comedy Club. 208 W. 23rd Street. Sherry Eaker, the former longtime Editor-in Chief of Back Stage and the producer of the event since its inception, heads up the Awards Committee that includes BistroAwards.com critics Gerry GeddesRoy Sander, Robert Windeler, and Mark Dundas Wood. Sander is also the award show’s associate producer; Wendy Lane Bailey is the assistant producer.

Premium Tickets are $150.00; General Admission tickets are $80.00. Ticket-buyers in both categories are invited to the “After-Bistros” party as guests of the Bistros. For details about the various ticket categories and early purchase prices, visit
www.BistroAwards.com.

The BISTRO AWARDS has been recognizing, encouraging, nurturing, and educating cabaret, jazz and comedy artists for 33 years through its insightful reviews and annual awards. It is the oldest award of its kind in the industry. It was established by Bob Harrington in 1985 in his “Bistro Bits” column in the trade weekly Back Stage, then under the editorship of Sherry Eaker. For the first few years, the awards were merely listed in Harrington’s column as notable performances he had seen during the calendar year. The first formal presentation of the awards was held in 1990 at Eighty Eight’s, a popular cabaret venue in the West Village. From there, the show moved on to The Ballroom in Chelsea, and then relocated to the Supper Club in the Broadway District, where it remained for many years. This year marks the 12th year at Gotham Comedy Club.

The guidelines that Harrington set up for himself to determine the first winners have become the basic philosophy behind the Bistro Awards, which recognize achievement in a wide variety of categories — from outstanding performances to outstanding contributions by members of the cabaret community. The object is not to choose the “best” of anything of the year, but to recognize and congratulate the accomplishments of those who have done something special. Accordingly, categories can easily be created from year to year as they best fit the year’s distinguished work.

Some of the Bistro’s special honorees have included Darlene Love (2017), Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross (2016), Ben Vereen (2014); Lainie Kazan and Maurice Hines (2013); Kaye Ballard, Melissa Manchester, and Dee Dee Bridgewater (2012); Dionne Warwick and Carol Channing (2011); Mitzi Gaynor and Elaine Stritch (2010); Charles Aznavour and Liza Minnelli (2009); Marilyn Maye (2008); Betty Buckley (2007); Steve Ross (2006); as well as Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, Barbara Cook, and many others.

The Mike Stern Band featuring Teymur Phell and Richie Morales will headline the 7th Les Paul Festival Concert at Ramapo College on Saturday, February 24, 2018 in the Berrie Center’s Sharp Theater at 8:00 p.m.  The annual festival celebrates Mahwah resident Les Paul’s innovative spirit as a musician and technologist by hosting a week of guest speakers and workshops for Ramapo’s music students culminating in a concert for the college and regional community. The Les Paul Festival is presented by the Ramapo College Music Program, the Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts, the School of Contemporary Arts, the student-run Ramapo Music Club, and the Mahwah Museum.

Mike Stern is regarded as one of the true guitar greats to a generation of contemporary jazz guitar aficionados. A player of remarkable facility, his searing lines are informed mainly by bebop and the blues while also carrying a rock-tinged intensity. Stern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early 1980s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then he has released 17 recordings as a leader, six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards.  His latest album is titled “Trip.”  Stern has also played with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jaco Pastorius, Michael and Randy Brecker, Eric Johnson, Bela Fleck, and numerous other major jazz musicians.  Stern was presented with Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award in 2012. Ramapo College is thrilled and honored to have Mike Stern headline the 7th Les Paul Festival, during which he will also provide a workshop for Ramapo music students.

Drummer Richie Morales, a native of New York City, is a versatile player who has performed and recorded with a wide range of contemporary artists: Mike Stern, The Brecker Brothers, Spyro Gyra, Grover Washington Jr., Al DiMeola, Stevie Wonder, Carly Simon, Dianne Reeves, saxophonist Bill Evans, bassist Victor Bailey, Michael Franks, George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra, Grammy award winning vibraphonist Dave Samuels, Gato Barbieri, Dave Valentin, Ray Barretto, and Herbie Mann. He also leads his own group performing a mixture of Jazz standards and original music. Richie has been a member of the jazz faculty at Purchase College Conservatory of Music SUNY since 2000. He has also taught at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program.

Bassist Teymur Phell moved to New York in 2011 and has since built a reputation as a vibrant and virtuosic player. He has performed with Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Danielia Cotton, Alex Young, Leni Stern, Kevin Salem, Lafayette Harris, and Oz Noy. Born in Azerbaijan to a family of professional musicians — his grandmother Elmira Nazirova was a celebrated classical pianist — Teymur studied classical bass at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and toured with Palestinian singer Amal Murkus.

Concert tickets are $30/27/24, and $8 for Ramapo students with ID. No discounts. Contact the Berrie Center Box Office: (201) 684-7844 or visit

Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Jazz

New York City, January 25, 2018) —Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan will be honored at the 33rd Annual Bistro Awards on Monday, March 12, with an award for her Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Jazz. One of her main influences, legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker, dubbed her “the singer with the million dollar ears.”

Jordan began singing as a child, and by her early teens she was working semi-professionally in Detroit clubs. She was a member of the vocal trio Skeeter, Mitch, and Jean (she was Jean), which did vocal versions of Parker’s solos, à la Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. After moving to New York in the early ’50s, she married Parker’s pianist, Duke Jordan, and studied with Lennie Tristano.

She began her recording career in the early ’60s, and a few years later her work expanded to include jazz liturgies sung in churches and extensive club appearances. By the late ‘70s, audiences had begun to embrace her uncompromising style, and her popularity grew, leading to more recordings with a variety of renowned jazz instrumentalists. Her unique vocal trademarks, including her ability to improvise lyrics and unexpected sweeping changes of pitch, were on full display. Her longtime preference for bass and voice led to her collaboration with bassist Cameron Brown, with whom she has been performing internationally for over 20 years.

As an educator, she was an Artist-in-Residence at the City University of New York, where she taught from 1978 to 2005. She also taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the Vermont Jazz Center, and she continues to lead workshops.

Ms. Jordan is the recipient of a 2006 MAC Award for Lifetime Achievement, a 2007 Humanitarian Award from the International Association for Jazz Education. a 2008 Lifetime in Service Award from Women in Jazz, and the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship. Published in 2014, Jazz Child: A Portrait of Sheila Jordan by Ellen Johnson was described by the Huffington Post as a “truly American success story.”

The Bistro Awards gala will be held on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 pm at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd St., produced by Sherry Eaker, who has headed up the event since its inception.

A full list of winners will be announced at the end of the month, when tickets will go on sale at www.BistroAwards.com.

Elliot Mason & Cre8tion
Celebrating the Album Release
  Before, Now & After
 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
Tuesday Jan 23 & Wednesday Jan 24
Sets at 7:30pm & 9:30pm

On January 23rd and 24th, Elliot Mason is celebrating the release of his solo debut album Before, Now & After with his band Cre8tion at Dizzys Club Coca-Cola

Trombonist Elliot Mason is a leading voice on his instrument and a member of the Jazz at
Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO). This album celebrates the release of
his debut solo album as a leader, Before, Now & After. As the title suggests, the record reflects on Mason’s most important musical influences, while adding a fresh vision and 21st century insight to them. This takes shape in several ways; in addition to brand new compositions “embodying emotions from favorite recordings,” he also explores specific compositions by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Elliot has been described as “He’s unbelievable as a trombonist, there’s unworldly facility, virtuosity and clarity in his playing, he can sing a melody out from the trombone; it’s like a human voice the way he plays it” – Wynton Marsalis

The album, besides the band (Elliot Mason, Sofija Knezevic, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez & Ali Jackson) is graced by a few of very special guests: Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans, Cyro Baptista and Brad Mason.

Elliot Mason & Cre8tion
Celebrating the Album Release
  Before, Now & After
 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
Tuesday Jan 23 & Wednesday Jan 24
Sets at 7:30pm & 9:30pm

On January 23rd and 24th, Elliot Mason is celebrating the release of his solo debut album Before, Now & After with his band Cre8tion at Dizzys Club Coca-Cola

Elliot has been described as “He’s unbelievable as a trombonist, there’s unworldly facility, virtuosity and clarity in his playing, he can sing a melody out from the trombone; it’s like a human voice the way he plays it” – Wynton Marsalis
Before, Now & After.

The album, besides the band (Elliot Mason, Sofija Knezevic, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez & Ali Jackson) is graced by a few of very special guests: Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans, Cyro Baptista and Brad Mason.
Before, Now & After is available now!
You can purchase the Album & Charts (CD, MP3’s & High-Res 24/96 kHz FLAC versions) HERE

Jim McNeely

Watch Django Festival Allstars

It’s a celebration at the great hall as The Django Festival Allstars, critically acclaimed masters of ‘gypsy jazz’, a style pioneered by legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt, will perform in New York at Carnegie Hall at 8 pm.  The Allstars have been criss-crossing the US to sold-out crowds, standing ovations, and critical acclaim.  At the Playboy Jazz Festival/Hollywood Bowl, Critic Scott Yanow wrote: “The highpoint of the entire festival was The Django Festival Allstars”.

On May 1st, DORADO SCHMITT will perform alongside his two sons, SAMSON and AMATI (Guitar soloists) ‘passing the family torch’ to them as his Dad did to him, carrying on the legacy of Gypsy Jazz. Performing alongside are top Allstar Soloists LUDOVIC BEIER (Accordion & Accordina) and PIERRE BLANCHARD (Violin). DOUDOU CUILLERIER  scat singing and rhythm guitar brings the house down…plus gypsy cousin Fancko Mehrstein on rhythm with  Antonio Licusati and Gino Roman on Bass.

… “the best jazz show in town! Imagine a stage filled with six contemporary Reinhardt descendants, and you’ll get a sense that the collective talent pool on the bandstand is larger than the Arc de Triomphe!”… Wall Street Journal

MELODY GARDOT
Grammy-winning Vocalist, is a master of the art of capturing mood and emotion reminiscent of greats like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone.

MELODY will perform Django’s most important composition ‘Nuages” with legendary Dorado Schmitt on Guitar.

PAQUITO D’RIVERA
Winner of 14 Grammy’s as top Clarinetist/Saxophonist with numerous recordings, travels the world in great demand for his enormous talent that defies categorization as he is highly acclaimed in areas of Jazz, Latin/Jazz , and Classical.

VERONICA SWIFT
Acclaimed as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene,  Veronica , 23,  is touring with  Chris Botti, performs regularly at Birdland, and  soon to  be touring Europe and the US.

The music of Django Reinhardt, legendary gypsy guitarist, speaks of Paris in the 20’s and 30’s when ‘gitane’ music filled the air, in the cafes and streets, in the countryside, a romantic Paris. In the gypsy camps, guitars swung with popular melodies, dizzying waltzes, the sweetness of the accordion and violin, campfires, gypsy life in full swing. swing.

The music is enrapturing…a feeling  of freedom and abandon, the soul of Manouche gypsy life brought to life at Carnegie Hall upon the release of their new CD, “Attitude Manouche” on Resilience Music Alliance. Much to be performed onstage highlights original compositions keeping the Django style fresh and beyond.

The Django Festival Allstars are the top players that have emerged from the Django Festival held biannually at Birdland in New York, and founded-produced by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta.  The traditions of gypsy jazz flourish today with music at the heart and soul of family life,. being passed down from one generation to another. The concert is dedicated to Maestro Stratta whose great musical talent and leadership set us on this path.

Solitaire Miles Nominated for
Best Western Swing Singer

Chicago’s Western Swing band Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas was nominated by the Academy of Western Artists for “Best Song” for their recently released single “A Thousand Good Nights”, and their vocalist Solitaire Miles, a veteran of the Chicago Jazz and Swing scene, was nominated for “Best Western Swing Vocalist”

Western Swing is an outgrowth of Big Band Swing from the late 1930’s  through the early 1950’s and  the band is made up of Chicago’s best Jazz, Swing and Country players.  The music is a mixture of Southwestern Roots, Big Band Swing, and Jazz  played by a hot string section featuring guitarist Neal Alger, Pedal Steel Virtuoso TC Furlong and Fiddle Maestro Stuart Rosenberg.  Eric Schneider is featured on Sax and Clarinet along with bass, piano and drums,  creating  a distinctive and wildly entertaining and eclectic form of American music.

Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas was awarded the AWA Will Rogers Award in 2016 for “Best Song” for “Love is a Lingering Thing” and has been featured on BBC Radio, NPR,  and on hundreds of radio stations across the US and Internationally.  Their new single “A Thousand Good Nights”  has been nominated for “Best Song” this year  and was originally recorded by the Father of Western Swing, Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies in 1936.

Vocalist Solitaire Miles, a long time Swing and Jazz Vocalist who has worked with esteemed jazz bandleaders like Johnny Frigo, Von Freeman,  Doc Cheatham and  Willie Pickens,   attributes her love of Western Swing to her early work with Jazz Violinist Frigo who also led a popular Western Swing Band for 20 years on Chicago’s syndicated radio show  “The WLS Barndance”.  Mixing the best of Swing, Jazz and Roots music in her vocal style, she has been described by DownBeat Magazine as “a winning blend of Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday.”

The AWA is an International non-profit organization of Musicians, Artisans and DJ’s who strive  to bring more visibility and recognition to  contemporary Western Artists who are preserving Western Music and Culture, as well as taking contemporary Cowboy and Western Music and Art to new and exciting heights.   The Music nominations are fairly based on radio play, tallied by AWA  DJ’s across the globe.  The AWA is not a Private Media Conglomerate who accepts payola for airplay, rather they feature the musicians and artists that they believe emulate the Western musical ideal.

The 22nd Annual AWA Award Ceremony will be held in Fort Worth Texas on March 15th and you can find more information at their website http://awaawards.org/  You can learn more about Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas at their website http://www.susiebluelonesomefellas.com/  You can find the single “A Thousand Good Nights” on itunes, Amazon, CD Baby and Spotify.

“Vocalist Solitaire Miles comes out of the Patsy Cline tradition. She sings Western Swing material with warm highs and holds her lows neatly. There’s a jazziness about Miles’s phrasing, but she holds fast to a sound reminiscent of roadside bars where just three people are left near closing at the pinball machine.” – Wall Street Journal

“Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas includes some of Chicago’s best Jazz and Country players. The group is pureCowboy Jazz, and Miles adds a lively vocal style that brings to mind a winning blend of Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday. ” – DownBeat Magazine

“You can’t listen to western swing and not smile, it’s impossible not to smile, it’s feel good music. Miles’ voice is wonderful, what an instrument.” – Michael Feldman, NPR

”Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas is a new album of Western Swing which is popularwith many folks, and I do think this group does it very well, it’s a lovely album.” – Marie Crichton BBC Radio

Rick Bogart Concerto II & III
Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra

Rick Bogart received his formal classical training at Philadelphia’s prestigious Curtis Institute of Music and North Texas State University. At age twelve Rick began his first formal lessons with a retired Big Band musician, Mr. Reader. Gumming the tenor sax that had been his mainstay throughout the Big Band days, Mr. Reader gave Rick a lesson in the blues ”before anything else”.

The Real Training
”Yes, I learned theory, harmony, composition, and all the rest,” he says. But my real training was at the traditional but unofficial New Orleans School of Music. In Bogart’s relentless quest to bring the clarinet back to the fore as a lead instrument, he has also been enamored with musician who can sing.

”As they say in New Orleans, ‘lf you can sing, sing'” So Bogart sings. As a musician-singer there is always that element of swing. ”I liked the way Thomas Jefferson sang – I could not get enough of it. I was so happy to play in his band and work with him night after night.”

Bogart’s selection of tunes are from what NEWSWEEK not long ago referred to as the ”classical music of the 20th century’.” Among them are ”My Blue Heaven” ”Don’t be that Way” ”Begin The Begiune” .’On The Sunny Side Of The Street” ”If I Could Be With You” ”Exactly Like You, and ”Lady Be Good”. He is certainly appreciative of other styles, such as be-bop and avant-garde players.”The great players of the past inspired me by keeping the melody in mind. The big tone concept of sound. They had respect for the melody. They always tried to state the melody repeatedly so people would know.”

Bogart regrets the decline in popularity of the clarinet and is on a mission to bring it back to center stage as a lead instrument. Bogart believes the clarinet declined for three reasons:
First, the clarinet is a difficult instrument to play; it was easier to get those warmer, richer solos on the tenor saxophone.
Second, there was a certain reaction to the great clarinet band leaders of the 1930’s and 40’s, so that the new players shied away from the instrument and wanted to play something different.

Thirdly, in the United States after the Big Band era, instrument makers made the clarinet primarily for school, their biggest customers. Children couldn’t handle the wide bore, couldn’t fill it with air. Thus the manufacturers narrowed the bore, altering the sound. Many of those playing professionally, including Bogart, have their clarinets ”customized” to get the sound they want  – similar to Boosey and Hawkes 10-10, the great English clarinet.

Recently Rick has given concerts at the University of Donetsk, Ukraine and the Kiev Opera House, Ukraine sponsored by the AMS Corp. Additionally he has performed at a concert at the United Nations, NY and a question & answer session with the U.N. Society Jazz Band.

WM Project Releases Debut
From a Familiar Place

featuring
Jeremy Pelt, Marshall Gilkes and Rafal Sarnecki

On November 30, 2017, WM Project released their debut album
From a Familiar Place on WM Records.

Watch
“From a Familiar Place” CD Trailer by WM Project

While WM Project is a brand-new constellation, the musical masterminds behind it, pianist Andrzej Winnicki and tenor saxophonist Krzysztof Medyna, go back a long way. In the 90’s, they have played together in the fusion group Electric Breakwater (“In the Bush” CD with Mark Egan on bass and Rodney Holmes on drums), and have furthered appreciation of Polish composer and pianist Krzysztof Komeda through their widely acclaimed Komeda Project. KP’s “Requiem”, featuring bassist Scott Colley, drummer Nasheet Waits and trumpeter Russ Johnson, made the list of Top New Albums in The Village Voice Critics Poll: 2009.

Now the time is ripe for another beginning. Their new album From a Familiar Place is a personal project for Winnicki and Medyna whose surnames are ingrained in the name: WM Project. The music sums up a long life lived with jazz, but also looks forward to the future. Winnicki’s own son, Michael Winnicki, is a highly talented drummer and brings youthful energy to original compositions and classics like Paul Desmond’s “Take Five” and Joe Zawinul’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”. In fact, rhythm is the essence of the group, as Medyna explains: “The only thing I care about is groove which we have in both re-worked tunes. We need to stay in tune with the African-American roots of jazz”.

These roots of rhythm also include hip-hop that provided inspiration for the grooves used on the tunes. As Winnicki says: “Arrangements for both ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ and ‘Take Five’ started with a groove. Just a drum groove to be exact. I don’t actively listen to hip-hop music at all, but it’s hard not to be aware of its impact on the culture of today. So consciously or subconsciously I was drawn into the hip-hop beats when looking for the fresh sounding grooves I could use to build my arrangements upon.”

Another influence is the inclusion of five-time Downbeat & Jazz Journalists Association Rising Star Award winner trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and 2016 double Grammy nominated trombonist Marshall Gilkes. As Winnicki explains: “Krzysztof, Michael and I all played gigs with Jeremy and Marshall before so we were very comfortable with how they played and some of the arrangements I wrote were done with them in mind (because of their musical personalities). Jeremy is so deeply rooted in the tradition of this great American art form and plays in such a soulful way. Marshall’s command of his instrument is just amazing (no wonder he was awarded a name of Rising Star in the latest DownBeat Magazine Poll). I knew no matter how hard the arrangement he would execute it flawlessly and play some great solos to boot.”

The group also includes the melodic dexterity of guitarist Rafal Sarnecki while bassist Jeff Dingler and Michael Winnicki form the rhythm section. Elaborating on their connection, Andrzej Winnicki says: “Jeff and Michael have been playing in different projects together since their time at the Mason Gross School of Arts. They understand and complement each other musically really well so the choice of the rhythm section was easy to make.”

The most striking proof of their ability to communicate together is “Praeludium” whose complex tapestry of odd rhythm and a catchy theme sounds tightly rehearsed, but is in fact unfolding live for the first time in the studio with Gilkes and Sarnecki delivering glistering solo flights. From a Familiar Place was recorded in Tom Tedesco’s Tedesco Studios and there is a feeling of warmth and spontaneity to the recording like a classic Blue Note-recording, which is supported by the intimacy of the studio and very little separation between the musicians.

It all adds up to a family of musicians playing modern jazz with strong ties to tradition. A tune like “On Sunday after Church” has subtle shades of Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island” with Pelt shaping the melody with his lucid lines, but Medyna and Winnicki also engage with their own catalog, performing reimagined versions of Electric Breakwater compositions “Blind Warriors” and “Looking Ahead”.

Looking ahead while also looking back is exactly what the album is about. The familiar place of the title is not a comfort zone of nostalgia, but a challenging source of creativity, as Medyna says: “All of us have a kind of ‘familiar place’ in our memories, desires or places left on the path of our lives. To me this title must stimulate the listener’s individual imagination and the music shall take the listener to such familiar place.”

With this album, WM Project shows the boundless possibilities of a deep understanding of jazz tradition resulting in memorable grooves and melodies.

The group will be touring in support of the album.
