‘RIGHT UP ON’ Oliver Lake, alto saxophone; FLUX Quartet (Passin’ Thru).

Mr. Lake has never paid genre distinctions much heed. This collaboration with the FLUX Quartet is a crucial document of his thinking. “5 Sisters” traffics in modernist blues; pointillism and sweet harmonies alternate in “2016.” When Mr. Lake joins the quartet, his saxophone playing sparks new heights of intensity. What The Press Is Saying About

Pablo Ziegler Trio
“Jazz Tango”

“Ziegler continues to push the art form forward… nuevo tango’s leading living exponent.”

All About Jazz

“There’s no question that Ziegler takes the tango to levels of sophistication and refinement probably undreamed of by Piazzolla.”

The Chicago Tribune

“No one embodies the art of the tango better.”

Lincoln Journal Star

“He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural… just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard.”

The Los Angeles Times

“A trip to the heart of this music… [Ziegler] is a sort of musical brujo, a conjurer who can make all within earshot a believer in his message.”
New York City Jazz Record

 Raul da Gama
Editor’s Pick · Featured Album · Jazz Tango

Unlike the tango, which – as a dance form – has a relatively clear, almost mathematical definition, there are really no words that can be used to describe the art form of Jazz. However where the two forms certainly meet is in the seemingly bottomless wellspring of ineffable emotion: in the molten movement of tango dancers. As far as Jazz is concerned there is the unquenchable desire to improvise further than boundless horizons where every note played is drenched in the feeling of The Blues. Passion is the glue that binds these two forms together in the music of the appropriately entitled Jazz Tango by Pablo Ziegler, who joins forces here with perhaps the most prodigiously talented young bandoneon player Héctor Del Curto and another monstrously gifted guitarist, Claudio Ragazzi to make this memorable live recording.

If it should come as no surprise that Pablo Ziegler should favour the music of Astor Piazzolla for this recording, it is also fitting that this programme should de rigueur include Mr Ziegler’s compositions for they more than complement those of the man who revolutionised the tango. But what really gives this recording its particular character is the profoundly meditative beauty of the performance of each of the musicians. Pablo Ziegler is a giant among men and, like his illustrious musical ancestor Astor Piazzolla, he worships at the altar of originality, creating furiously beautiful arabesques whose black dots leap off the page as he (Mr Ziegler) commands them to pirouette and fly airborne into the rarefied realm of his art. One is so mesmerised by his fierce pianism that experiencing him play is to be bewitched by his madly dancing fingers.

One is no less dazzled by Héctor Del Curto, who is casting a long shadow on bandoneon playing in the post-Piazzolla era. His expressive playing is born of spry finger-work that creates glorious dynamics by the seemingly stealthy manipulation of the buttons on his instrument. The result is an explosive phrase that could be played with very subtle depressions of the buttons, almost imperceptible to the eye, but at the beck and call of Mr Del Curto nevertheless. Claudio Ragazzi is more introverted in his musicianship but no less ingenious when it comes to fretwork and the ensuing harmonics that adorns the music on this programme. Together the musicians make this one of the most memorable experiences for audience. The superb recording has also been mastered to perfection by Oscar Zambrano, preserving the warmth and vivid colours of the live performance.

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by Dodie Miller-Gould
May 12, 2017

With Pablo Ziegler’s new CD, “Jazz Tango,” the tango lives and breathes–a common theme in Ziegler’s work; to ordinary people, there seems only so much a person can do with a tango. On this release, the music moves as if it possessed its own blood and limbs, and renders the tango a sinewy and electric thing, a move that impresses old and new fans alike.

Fortunately, all the songs are recorded live. There is something gratifying about hearing other people, faceless strangers in this case, applaud a performance that you, the listener, have also enjoyed. It is unclear whether the passion for Ziegler’s work comes from his approach—the task of making the tango new, or if it is the gravitas that comes with being a craftsman of his form. Maybe it is both. The music is enjoyable, and will teach listeners about music, about tango and about Ziegler.

In this release, Ziegler, on piano, is joined by Hector del Curto playing bandoneon, and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar. The “bandoneon” is a type of concertina popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Lithuania. The effect the instrument has on this CD is an emotive quality brought about by willowy swells and long, pensive notes. The way all three parts work together for an evocative impression on songs like “Muchacha de Boedo” where listeners can hear the piano, guitar and bandoneon take turns rising and falling, until (seemingly) exhausted, they fade out at the end. This song, like many of Ziegler’s compositions, sound as though they are the movie scores without the accompanying film.

“Libertango” is a frantic mash-up of piano and guitar, until, less than two minutes in, the piano begins a spirited motif that the other instruments begin to complement. Roughly a quarter of the way through, the song morphs again, into the tango that many listeners are used to.

“Michelangelo 70” is spirited and moody, like an expressive dancer. The word “rollicking” comes to mind at times. The bandoneon is used to punctuate the twists and turns in the song. Listeners can envision the graceful but strong moves of tango dancers.

Since his debut album in 1990, “Cuarteto Para El Nuevo Tango,” Ziegler has crafted a career out of joining the traditional to the new and making an art out of it all.

Lemon Wire

A real cooker right out of the box, it makes you glad that Ziegler is the kind of muso that sends you records where the reviews just write themselves. A mostly original date with a few Piazzollas tossed in to appease the tourists, the piano ace justifies my decision to abandon piano lessons when I was eight because I must have instinctively known I could never play like this. A masterful work by a master that loves tango so much he’d rather use his energy and smarts to move the form forward in fine style rather than keep it embalmed in amber. Must hearing if you’ve got the slightest of tango bugs.

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by George W. Harris
October 5, 2017

Pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler creates an intriguing trio with Hector Del Curto on bandoneon and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar through a mix of originals and pieces from Nuevo Tango icon Astor Piazzolla. The three Piazzolla pieces, “Michelangelo 70,” “Fuga y Mesterio” and “Libertango” are filled with complex moves, sensuality and drama as the strings are tapped, strummed and spliced. The dynamics rise and fall like a wave on “La Fundicion” and Old World charms are in abundance on “Elegante Canyenguito.” Ziegler is misty-eyed on “Milonga Del Adios” and the team plays a game of Peek-A-Boo on the clever “Blues Porteno.” Lots of thought mixed with heart.

Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes,

Federico Ughi

Telepathic Alliances

“For longtime Carter heads, this is the best group he’s played alongside since the classic lineup of Other Dimensions in Music — they’re a band of brothers who really do play as though they are reading one another’s minds. It’s truly a sight to witness.” – Ron Hart, Village Voice

This project is the exciting, unusual and at times unexpected result of five musicians from different backgrounds getting together in a room and making music together for the first time. The chemistry they create is driven by a telepathic understanding, hence the title of the album.

This is not the first project for musicians Daniel CarterMatthew Putman and Federico Ughi. The three have been collaborating closely for the last ten years. Their first album, The Gowanus Recordings, (also featuring Demian Richardson and Dave Moss) was released in 2009.

Daniel Carter was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Massachusetts. His musical background includes recording and performances with legendary artists such as Sun Ra, Yoko Ono, Cecil Taylor, Living Colour, TEST, Other Dimensions In Music,  MMW (Medeski Martin and Wood), Jaco Pastorius, Sonic Youth and many many others. Pianist Matthew Putman grew up in Ohio where he studied classical music and theatre. He is a renowned scientist and educator, best known for his work in nanotechnology, the science of working in extremely small dimensions. Drummer Federico Ughi grew up in Rome, Italy. He has developed his own style through the years, studying with master Ornette Coleman and playing and touring the world with celebrated bands like The Cinematic Orchestra and Blue Foundation.

On this record Carter, Putman and Ughi collaborate for the first time with Texas-born clarinet player Patrick Holmes (a brilliant up-and-coming member of the New York downtown scene) and veteran bassist Hilliard Greene, a mainstay of the avant-garde for the last 20 years. He has played with Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, and Charles Gayle among many others.

Daniel Carter’s poetry is featured on the cover of these exclusive limited edition vinyl LPs.

The album is out now on Forward Festival & 577 Records www.577records.com
This is an exclusive limited edition of 300 hand-numbered vinyl LPs + digital album
This project will be featured this Friday December 8th at the Forward Festival 2017

Telepathic Alliances

New Video
Incredible Musical Telepathy From
Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh

Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh have electro-acoustic roots going back to the late sixties when they recorded and concertized together for a decade in the Denny Zeitlin Trio. In 2017, 50 years later, Sunnyside Records released “Expedition,” a duo album of critically acclaimed free improvisations. Zeitlin’s studio resembles Mission Control at Houston, with the multiple computers, monitors, controllers, and miles of cables. Open to all genres, with no pre-planning of any kind, George, playing drumset and percussion, and Denny, playing acoustic piano, plus 4 keyboards/synthesizers, launch into free-improvisation. The sound barrier that provides separation for recording makes it impossible for them to see each other. They rely on headphones and a musical rapport that seems telepathic. The performances have such structural integrity that people often think these “spontaneous compositions” must have been written out.

NEWLY RELEASED ON SUNNYSIDE RECORDS: “EXPEDITION”

Denny Zeitlin & George Marsh
continue their duo electro-acoustic adventures in free improvisation

(Sunnyside Records 1487)
Street Date: July 21, 2017

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

“There is a wonderfully free-flowing spirit to the new Denny Zeitlin & George Marsh CD Expedition. The music percolates like water from a newly tapped spring. It has an organic slipstream feel to it that comes from these two brilliant musicians capturing themselves exploring totally “in the moment” improvisations. Script-less forays into the possibilities; Zeitlin’s electro-acoustic keyboard artistry paired with Marsh’s intuitively complementary percussive accentuation…”
Ralph A. Miriello, HuffingtonPost

“… The number of jazz musicians who were innovating 4-5 decades ago and continue to innovate today is very small; Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh certainly belong in that exclusive club. Expedition continues their long, provocative journey.” S. Victor Aaron, SomethingElseReviews

“…[Zeitlin] is able to create – in all of his music, composed and improvised – heroic portraits and vast panoramas as well as infusing them with an intimacy and an emotional intensity which can only be described as the “poetry of feeling.” …The effect, as in all the recordings of the past is breathtaking… As ever, Mr. Marsh plays above and beyond the call of rhythm. His is a music fused into the music of Denny Zeitlin. He (George Marsh) is vigourous – viscerally so – when the music drives him to it. But there is also a gentle lyricism…. No matter what the applied force, George Marsh always plays like a man inspired with such presence and seriousness that every moment sounds carefully weighed up. Together, Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh make music that never shows any sense of calculation or strain and it would be hard to find playing of greater immediacy in the music of another piano-drum duo.” Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

“[album pre-release review of ‘Geysers’] It takes deeply rooted and restively curious minds to make music like this. On the opening track of this duo’s new album, “Expedition,” Mr. Marsh’s sense of syncopation on the drum kit refers back to before even the establishment of jazz rhythm. Mr. Zeitlin, an inveterate piano innovator since the 1960s and a fusion pioneer, plays a variety of keyboards and synthesizers; he conjures a vague drone in the middle-to-low range, circling your inner ear with melodies and effects. They wander at first, then find direction; they deepen and soak in, rather than evaporate.”                                             Giovanni Russonello, NewYorkTimes

“… This is above all integrated spontaneity, with complete timbral mastery joining fittingly with free jazz inventiveness of the highest order. In the listening is the confirmation. Expedition is one of the finest jazz albums of the year!”
Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Music Review

“… While the scent of freedom carries on the air across this entire album, the music is rarely formless. It grooves, breathes, flows, and evolves in kaleidoscopic fashion, taking and/or changing shape through a near-telepathic process… Entire tracks—or “sound paintings,” if we’re going with the Zeitlin-Marsh vernacular—often possess a magnetic draw born of language and development… Any opportunity to hear Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh take us into the great unknown is an opportunity worth taking.” Dan Bilawsky, AllAboutJazz

“Pianist Denny Zeitlin, [Roscoe] Mitchell’s contemporary and fellow native of Chicago is equally dedicated to ceaseless artistic growth…Zeitlin and Marsh’s unplanned mutual inventiveness is so logical that it often sounds as if it must have been conceived on manuscript paper, but no; it is spontaneous improvisation… The album is a remarkable technical accomplishment. More important, it is a solid musical achievement that has the virtue of being—if you’ll pardon the outmoded, uncool, expression—entertaining.”
Doug Ramsey, ArtsJournal.com/Rifftides

” …He and percussionist par excellence George Marsh continue to explore the dynamics of creation at an exciting level of interaction on Expedition. And what’s more, while doing so, they heed bassist Bill Crow’s admonition about the purpose of Jazz – they have fun. You can sense the thrill of adventure in the music they are making as the music is alive; boundless; unpredictable – just the way it should be at this stage of their long careers in music.”                                            Steven Cerra, JazzProfiles.blogspot

This is not the first collaboration between pianist/keyboardist Denny Zeitlin and drummer George Marsh, but it’s the strongest… Both artists use broad brush strokes on these abstract paintings of sounds, taking the listener to other exotic worlds.” George W. Harris, JazzWeekly

“… Now, the label has issued “Expedition” and it’s even more fascinating and exploratory than the duo’s debut…What makes this album and its pastiche of sounds, noises, and melodies so impressive is that the music is always accessible, always intelligent.  You should go on this trip; it’s not “novelty” music but the adventures of two musicians who have always pushed beyond the mundane, the tried and true, into the heart of creative music.”                                             Richard B. Kamins, StepTempest.Blogspot

“What began with the intriguing 2015 release Riding the Moment has taken a huge leap on Expedition. The electro-acoustic explorations of keyboardist Denny Zeitlin and percussionist George Marsh dive even deeper into the “electro” part of that equation. Melodies lash out like streaks of lightning across a nighttime sky. Rhythms are the rainstorm that follows. The harmonies are the thick clouds that instill wonder at how such beauty can exist within so much chaos. It’s a special kind of dramatic music that can elicit big smiles, and Zeitlin and Marsh do so again and again.” Dave Sumner, Daily.Bandcamp

“[4.5 out of 5 stars]… There’s a lot for the ears to digest. Synthesizers—and Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh—are capable of so much, as in the closer/title tune, with its bowed bass-like opening that evolves in the direction of the symphonic, featuring a horn-like monologue backed by electro-drones and swirlings, interjected with Marsh’s robust percussive poetry. A superb wrap-up to this set of the Denny Zeitlin/George Marsh innovations.” Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz

“Denny Zeitlin, George Marsh reunite for cosmic explosion on “Expedition”…  an intriguing continuation of the duo’s genre-less, free jazz experimentation from the 2015 album, Riding The Moment… The duo remains firmly outside the lines of traditional music, or any specific genre.. The visual equivalent of their Expedition is one of traversing a vast forest filled with lots of animated wildlife and flowers in bloom…”
Carol Banks Weber, JazzMedium

About Luke Sellick:

Bassist-of-choice for top-tier artists Russell Malone, Johnny O’Neal, Jimmy Greene and others, LUKE SELLICK is a compelling newcomer on the jazz scene. Raised in the rich and eclectic musical climate of Winnipeg, Canada, Luke’s musical journey lead him to New York where he attended The Juilliard School and was mentored by legendary bassist Ron Carter. He apprenticed musically with pianist Johnny O’Neal, performing weekly in classic New York clubs Smoke, Smalls and Mezzrow.

Luke currently lives in Harlem, NYC. He has recently appeared in concert with Russell Malone, Donald Vega, Orrin Evans, Carl Allen, Renee Rosnes and many others, at venues including The Village Vanguard, Blue Note and Jazz Standard. Luke’s debut album ALCHEMIST was released in March 2017 on the Cellar Live label, featuring a cast of brilliant instrumentalists from New York’s next generation.

Luke’s musical philosophy is epitomized in the words of J.S. Bach, that “the end of all music is none other than glory of God and the refreshment of the spirit”.

About the Christmas EP:

From New York-based, Winnipeg-born bassist LUKE SELLICK comes his Christmas EP, a holiday follow-up to his critically-acclaimed debut Alchemist, released earlier this year. The EP features familiar NYC-based collaborators Andrew Renfroe, Jordan Pettay, Jimmy MacBride and Curtis Nowosad, up-and-comer Julius Rodriguez, NYC mainstays Jesse Fischer and Matt Marantz, and award-winning vocalists Sheena Rattai (Red Moon Road) and Erin Propp.

Sellick has crafted a rich sonic palette including saxophones, vocals, guitar, drums, electric bass and a multitude of vintage keyboards and synthesizers reminiscent of classic Gospel and R&B. Likewise, he has chosen to interpret and re-imagine a nostalgic mix of songs from his childhood, including four Christmas hymns (O Come Emanuel, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Good Christian Friends Rejoice), a 20th Century classic (Do You Hear What I Hear?) and the new-year’s anthem, Auld Lang Syne.  The power of a great holiday album is its ability to keep the listener coming back to it year-in and year-out; with his Christmas EP, Luke Sellick has put a refreshing spin on favourite tunes that will do just that.

New Single From
Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas
“A Thousand Goodnights”

Listen To

Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas
A Thousand Goodnights

Western Swing band Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas releases a new single this Fall –  “A Thousand Goodnights”  – a Swing tune originally recorded in 1936 by the Father of Western Swing,  Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies.   The single  is a follow up to their self-titled,  award winning  album and features a charming fiddle solo by Stuart Rosenberg with harmonies  by Steel Guitar virtuoso TC Furlong, along with acoustic guitar,  piano, bass and drums.   You can download the new song at itunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and Bandcamp.

Milton Brown founded the genre of Western Swing in the 1930’s.   His band “The Musical Brownies” was the first to fuse Roots, Big Band Swing, Jazz, and Pop together into the unique and distinctly American hybrid.   Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas is Chicago’s award-winning   Western Swing band, comprised of Chicago’s best Jazz, Swing, Country and Roots players.   They follow in Browns footsteps by creating  authentic Western Swing,  and have recently been  awarded “Best Song” by the Academy of Western Artists in 2016 for their arrangement of the Cindy Walker tune “Love is a Lingering Thing”.

“Vocalist Solitaire Miles comes out of the Patsy Cline tradition.   She sings Western Swing material with warm highs and holds her lows neatly.  There’s a jazziness about Miles’s phrasing, but she holds fast to a sound reminiscent of roadside bars where just three people are left near closing at the pinball machine.”   Wall Street Journal

“Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas includes some of Chicago’s best Jazz and Country players.  The group is pure Cowboy Jazz, and Miles adds a lively vocal style that brings to mind a winning blend  of Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday. ”
 DownBeat Magazine

“In her home base of Chicago Solitaire Miles boasts an avid following as a singer equally at home with jazz and swing. Given that combination of styles, it’s no surprise—but an unexpected delight—to hear what she can do with western swing, which is not all that far removed from what she has been doing for years now. In her guise as Susie Blue, with her band  billed as The Lonesome Fellas, she deploys her warm, sultry voice on choice material, strictly top drawer fare, from some of the most important songwriters in western swing history…”
David McGee, Deep Roots Magazine

New York’s Longest Running Jazz Concert Series

Announces its 46th Season

Four exciting 2018 concerts you won’t want to miss!
Plus, surprise special guest at all shows.

Long-time favorites and first-timers will jam together all season long, at this popular jazz concert series.

In four stellar concerts featuring some of the brightest lights in jazz today, 2018’s Highlights In Jazz series brings together a multitude of beloved jazz musicians spanning generations and styles. You’ll hear unforgettable performances from nonagenarians Jimmy Heath, Bucky Pizzarelli and Dick Hyman, youthful sensations Dominick Farinacci and Peter and Will Anderson, and mainstream mainstays including Russell Malone, Steve Turre, George Cables, Houston Person, and many more.

Gathering top musicians across generations and genres is a hallmark of Highlights In Jazz, and a goal of producer Jack Kleinsinger. “All-star jams are my stock-in-trade–bringing musicians together to play with people they don’t play with every night of the week. The audience gets to hear something different from what they’ll hear in the clubs,” Kleinsinger notes. “We’re blessed to have so many great musicians in New York, and I like to include a variety of younger artists and veterans.”

Surprise special guest are another trademark of every concert in the series, from the very first Highlights In Jazz presentation in the early 1970s. There’s always at least one unannounced top-flight musician scheduled to appear, plus there are often special guest who surprise even Kleinsinger. “I’ll see someone in the audience and bring them up, or sometimes someone will come backstage to say hello and I’ll ask them to play. Once, Gerry Mulligan was in the house, and he walked up the aisle to the stage, playing his horn.”

Jack Kleinsinger’s
HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ 2018

46th year

The new season kicks off with the Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala, featuring the Bucky Pizzarelli Trio with guitarist Russell Malone, and bassist Martin Pizzarelli. Acclaimed vocalist Kevin Mahogany and his band share the bill at this all-star show.

At 92 years old, guitar virtuoso Bucky Pizzarelli has a lot of musical history under his fingers: He’s played with renowned favorites including Benny Goodman, George Barnes, Stephane Grappelli, Frank Sinatra, the Tonight Show band, and Paul McCartney. Bucky Pizzarelli was on the bill of the very first Highlights In Jazz concert way back in the 1970s, and has returned to the series many times since. Throughout his career Bucky remained in the top-rank of most in-demand studio musicians, but for this seasoned pro, playing for an audience is the ultimate pleasure.

Joining the maestro on stage at 2018’s Highlights In Jazz season opener will be fellow guitarist Russell Malone, a six-string master in his own right. Russell credits Wes Montgomery and George Benson as early influences, but has such a distinctive style you’d never mistake him for anyone else. With more than a dozen albums as a leader, Russell has shown he knows his way around standards and originals. This versatile guitarist has performed with Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, Dianne Reeves and other jazz icons.

Featured bassist Martin Pizzarelli proves the apple didn’t fall far from the talented family tree: He is Bucky Pizzarelli’s son and renowned guitarist John Pizzarelli’s brother.

Long recognized as among the top vocalists in jazz today, thanks to his expressive baritone voice, Kevin Mahogany knows his way around everything from swing to bop to blues to ballads. He’s proved his range over and over at clubs and festivals around the globe and on albums, as he turns his creativity to interpreting Motown hits, paying tribute to Charles Mingus, or exploring tunes inspired by the timeless pairing of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.

SEASON THREE

  • Steve Cardenas is releasing a record dedicated to greats Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. Recording with a quartet built of long-time collaborators of both titans Loren Stillman on sax, Thomas Morgan on bass and Matt Wilson on drums, all Charlie and Paul tunes, a couple of which have never been recorded. (February 2018)
  • The Chicagoan composer and saxophonist Andrew Zimmerman (previously featured on our first release, Frank Kimbrough’s “Meantime”) has put together a drumless quartet featuring pianist Kevin Hays (recording here on the same 9 foot Fazioli that Jack DeJohnette used), the bassist Matt Penman and the great Dave Douglas on trumpet. (April 2018)
  • Lionel Loueke is releasing his first ever album of standards featuring extraordinary accomplices Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums. (June 2018)
  • Skúlli Sverrisson and Bill Frisell are releasing their first collaboration. All original music from Skúlli, much of it written for Bill. If you are familiar with Skúlli and Bill’s music, you’ll know what you’re getting into, a record of uncommon depth and beauty. (August 2018)
  • Incredible Cuban drummer Francisco Mela (McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, John Scofield) is releasing an album of all original material with his working band featuring Kris DavisGerald Cannon and Hery Paz. (October 2018)
  • Boston based trumpeter Jason Palmer put together a band of his long time New York collaborators for a session of originals and original takes on standards with pianist Leo Genovese (previously featured on his own record on Newvelle), bassist Joe Martin and drummer Kendrick Scott. (December 2018)

Eddie Who – REMIX (Music Video)

The Eddie Who Remix is a funky dance version of a tune originally written by Eddie Harris about what he has accomplished as a jazz musician throughout his career .

Eddie Harris was one the greatest tenor saxophonist of his era. In the course of recording more than 70 albums, and authoring 7 music books, Eddie has displayed himself as a jazz artist , also known as The Electrifying Eddie Harris who has played blues, rock, jazz fusion, straight-ahead, soul, and funk grooves. Eddie’s pioneering work in musical electronics (the Varitone electronic saxophone amplification system) and the effective conjunction of different elements of blues, R&B, jazz, and funk has had a widespread influence on what is generally considered today’s music. Eddie’s music has been sampled by countless artists including, but not limited to the following: Jamiroquai, Macy Gray, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Heavy D, etc. He has also had many works featured in highly popular films and television shows from Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” to A&E’s “Bates Motel” and HBO’s “Vinyl.” Eddie’s most popular tunes include: Exodus, Listen Here, Freedom Jazz Dance, Compared To What and Cold Duck Time.

British Jazz Legend Harry South Retrospective

New Release
HARRY SOUTH
The Songbook 4CD set

 RANDB040

Purchase & More Info

Harry South may have been a name on the tips of the tongues of only the cognoscenti until now, but this collection will prove that his sometimes seemingly apocryphal reputation rests firmly in fact. This CD set contains 63 tracks (most receiving their first release), all written by Harry, the majority of them from the sixties, when British jazz was at its peak and ranges through Soul Jazz, Hard Bop, Latin stylings and funky big band sounds.

Following a chance encounter in Soho’s French House, the South family have kindly allowed us to scour the many hours of Harry’s own private archive of cassette and reel tapes. This has enabled a hitherto hidden world to emerge, one that will surely call for a re-evaluation of South’s contribution to the art of British jazz composition. It brings to life a musical trajectory that winds from fashion-chasing emulation to stylistic independence and which maps much of the UK’s jazz landscape along the way.

The musicians include the cream of British jazz of the time: Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Dick Morrissey, Phil Seamen, Ronnie Ross, Ian Carr; any player of repute would have a stint in the South band. ‘Sure, you can learn a lot listening to other people on record but Harry taught me more than I ever got from records’, Tubby Hayes.

Contains 36-page booklet with notes by Mark Baxter (Man In A Hurry) and Simon Spillett (The Long Shadow of the Little Giant)

An exemplary tribute to an unjustly neglected figure  – Richard Williams
A perfect potted history of the period – Dave Gelly, The Observer

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER AND JAZZTIMES
ANNOUNCE CO-PRODUCTION OF THE
2018 JAZZ CONGRESS

First annual jazz conference to be held at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on January 11 & 12, 2018

Jazz at Lincoln Center and JazzTimes have joined forces to co-produce the Jazz Congress, a new annual conference designed to bring together artists, media and industry leaders in the global jazz community to exchange ideas and resources. The 2018 Jazz Congress, featuring a series of panels, workshops, meetings and performances, will be held on January 11-12, 2018 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located at Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York. The 2018 Jazz Congress schedule of events will be announced soon.

JazzTimes has been organizing confabs for the jazz industry since 1979, when it first hosted the Radio Free Jazz Convention, later the JazzTimes Convention, which was held until 1998. Beginning in 2000, JazzTimes partnered with the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) to create the Industry Track as part of that organization’s annual conference.  After IAJE folded in 2009, the magazine created a DIY Crash Course at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) conference in 2011.  Working with a consortium of organizations and individuals, the Jazz Connect Conference followed in 2012 and took place as a pre-conference at the APAP conference for the three years.  The conference moved as a stand-alone event to Saint Peter’s Church in 2015, where it was held for the next three years, presented with the Jazz Forward Coalition. The Jazz Congress represents a new partnership and a new approach to bringing the jazz community together.

Registration dates and rates:
Early Bird: $125 today through November 15, 2017
Regular: $175 November 16, 2017 – January 4, 2018
Week-of: $200 January 4 – 12, 2018
Members of various organizations—including NARAS, AFM Local 802, Chamber Music America, APAP, Jazz Journalists Association, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC—can receive an additional 15% discount off pre-registration. Members should contact their organization for the promo code.
There will be table-top displays available for both days.  The cost is $500 and includes two registrations.  To purchase your exhibit space, contact Miene Smith at msmith@madavor.com or 617-706-9092.  In addition, JazzTimes will be publishing the conference program, which will also run in the January/February issue of JazzTimes. “I listened to the CD today – uninterrupted!  It is really beautiful. The compositions, the arrangements, the performances, and Kim’s singing. I am so happy to listen and to honestly say that this is a beautiful and important record.”

                                                                                              — Brazilian Jazz Vocalist Luciana Souza

“Excellent material! And great musicians! And I love that the music is rooted in personal identity – something that I always try to include in what I do.”

                                                                                  Oscar-Winning Film Composer Gustavo Santaolalla

“There is something very powerful in these compositions. The music is very expressive and dense – in the good sense of the word – and it grows on you.”

                                                                         Award-Winning Composer Osvaldo Golijov

EL ECO with drummer-composer Guillermo Nojechowicz performs this Wednesday at the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival with New York Voices co-founder and vocalist Kim Nazarian, pianist Helio Alves, bass-player Fernando Huergo, saxophonist Marco Pignataro, and Grammy Award winner Brian Lynch on trumpet.

A Brazilian Argentinean jazz ensemble based in Boston, New York City, and Oberlin, Ohio, EL ECO digs deep into straight-ahead jazz and bebop, punctuated by a deep respect for the complexity of Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms, darkened by echoes of Piazzolla.

Their Dominican Republic appearance marks the debut of Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933, their new CD just released by Zoho Music. The album was inspired by a remnant of Guillermo’s family history, the passport that his grandmother carried when she fled Warsaw for Argentina in 1933 along with her small son. Crossing Europe by train, they left behind everything familiar to face the unknown in Buenos Aires – a trip that spared them from the Holocaust, when so many others in their community later perished.

The Latin jazz suite that chronicles their long uncertain journey is the centerpiece of Puerto de Buenos Aires 1993 – a record that jazz vocalist Luciana Souza has called “beautiful and important.”

A leader of Boston’s Latin jazz scene, El ECO received national acclaim in a broadcast performance on National Public Radio’s “Jazz Set” with host and Grammy Award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Performances have included the Curação International Jazz Festival in the Netherland Antilles, the Freihofer Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs, the Telluride Jazz Celebration in Colorado, and the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival in Guillermo’s native Argentina.

Guillermo is also an international clinician and educator. He performed with his students and guest artist Joshua Redman through a program with Harvard University and with former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky at Google Headquarters in Cambridge. Traveling in 2012 and 2016 to the Panama Jazz Festival – where jazz pianist Danilo Perez is Artistic Director – he and his students performed and he taught master class workshops in Brazilian jazz.

FOR YOUR GRAMMY® CONSIDERATION
BIANCA ROSSINIVENTO DO NORTE
Best New Artist, Best Latin Jazz Album

Critical Acclaim for Bianca Rossini’s Vento do Norte:

“Vento Do Norte, is another collection of original Bossa Novas that further cement Rossini’s reputation as a foremost composer of Brazilian music. The recording is buffed to a bright, pristine shine, warm to the touch and humid as a lover’s breathe.”
All About Jazz by C. Michael Bailey

“The beauty of Bossa Nova is back, courtesy of Rio de Janeiro native Bianca Rossini. Her third album is warm, winning and wonderful. Every track here (and Rossini co-wrote thee of the tunes and penned the lyrics for all 10 of these originals songs) proves to be endlessly engaging. Bianca clearly has earned a place among the top Bossa Nova artists of the day.”
Pop Culture Classics by Paul Freeman

“Ms. Rossini introduces ten compositions that are full of spirit, cover a variety of moods, and always contain the irresistible Bossa Nova rhythms. On Vento do Norte, Bianca Rossini stakes out her claim as one of the finest bossa-nova singers on the scene today, and one of its most important writers.”  LA Jazz Scene Magazine by Scott Yanow

“When I conjure up perfect Bossa Nova in my mind, it sounds very much like Bianca Rossini’s elegant Vento do Norte. Bianca’s vocal delivery is sweet and sunny, the arrangements sway and swing entrancingly, and the songs stay with you long after the final notes fade away. Each track is a gem, luxuriant, gleaming and intimate, imbued with timeless traditions and ingenuity. Vento do Norte is a triumph, Bianca Rossini’s most fully realized and enrapturing release to date.”
Jeff Tamarkin, music journalist

“Bianca Rossini’s voice is pure, expressive, playful. Her songs poetic, richly grounded in generations of traditions for which she clearly has deep affection, not to mention expertise and facility. But what stands out most on Vento de Norte is her honesty, both emotional and artistic. Steve Hochman, music journalist
