Scott Yanow : Urban Horn Project Review

“Ken Wiley is a veteran French horn player who has worked with such notables as John Patitucci, Grant Geissman, the late Charlie Rouse and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra. A strong jazz improviser who has a beautiful and mellow tone, Wiley is also a notable composer and an occasional bandleader.

Urban Horn Project is comprised of a dozen Wiley originals. The music is atmospheric, quietly moody, full of hypnotic themes and filled with colorful tones and harmonies with Wiley’s French horn often in the lead. Most of the selections have Wiley joined by guitarist Mike Miller, bassist Dave Carpenter, drummer Ralph Humphrey and percussionist Luis Conte. Dan Higgins is a major asset throughout, whether playing flute, piccolo, clarinet, harmonica, alto or tenor. One song adds two trumpets, tenor sax, and a trombone while two of the originals (“Viernes” and “Vendredi”) are spoken word pieces dedicated to Friday in Los Angeles and narrated by either Ada Cirillo or Dessy Di Lauro.

The distinctive ensembles and the interplay between Wiley and Higgins are two good reasons to acquire Urban Horn Project. To name a few highlights, “Fresh Grass” has fine piccolo playing by Higgins, “DeFalla” is a Latin piece that could have been written by Chick Corea, “Li’l Lucy” (with has a tradeoff by French horn and alto) is a bit funky in an early 1970s Quincy Jones groove, “Mingling” contrasts flute and French horn and “Montoya” has a theme that is a bit hypnotic.

Listeners should approach Urban Horn Project without preconceptions about the French horn or jazz in general. They will find the music to be subtle, filled with attractive grooves and quietly unpredictable. The Urban Horn Project grows in interest with each listen.

Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian and author of 11 books including The Great Jazz Guitarists, The Jazz Singers and Jazz On Record 1917-76.”

DAVID LOPATO
“GENDHING FOR A SPIRIT RISING”

BEST WORLD MUSIC RECORD OF THE YEAR
BEST ALBUM NOTES

Gendhing for a Spirit Rising is a landmark 2-CD recording, 25 years in the making, that incorporates Indonesian gamelan and other Eastern musics with Western improvisation in a way that has not been done before. It features a line-up of brilliant musicians, including the world’s foremost master of Javanese rebab and two of America’s foremost performers of Indonesian gamelan.

“A two-CD set, Gendhing for a Spirit Rising” is unlike anything you are likely to hear this year (or any year). Unlike many experiments with musical fusion, Lopato’s music is the genuine article.”  4 ½ stars
                                                                                John Ephland, Downbeat Magazine

“A diversely talented and musically omnivorous pianist, David Lopato is an artist who defies easy categorization. Having forged an intensely unique and personal sound in his pianistic touch, David has absorbed not only the jazz piano canon, but also the musical worlds of Indonesian gamelan traditions, West African drumming practices and electro-acoustic compositions. Indeed, on his latest release, Gendhing for a Spirit Rising, David leads a mixed ensemble of talents through a dizzying tour of musical languages from around the world.”

*ELECTRIC ART SONGS: MUSE-EEK PRESENTS LISTEN TO THIS (MSK 303) *

The intuitive understanding between musicians is called “chemistry” and *Listen To This*, with *Judi Silvano* and *Bruce Arnold* has chemistry in abundance. The duets on this recording, some improvised, some composed, show a duo who are intensely tuned into every nuance as they follow the sonic twists and turns of these 12 striking songs. This is some deep listening.

QUOTES:

“*Listen to This* is some beautiful, cosmic music created by two of the most inventive musicians on the scene today”. – Joe Lovano, Grammy Winner and Berklee College Performance Chair

* From the get-go “Listen to This” will shock jazz purists with the spacey effects on Arnold’s axe and the electronically harmonized multiple Silvano voices. But vocalist Judi Silvano’s phrasing, inflections, and improvisatory reactions and guitarist Bruce Arnold’s lush harmonies definitely reveal jazz’s genetic imprint.*

*The definitive breakdown of musical categorization was delivered in 1962 by Duke Ellington: “There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind.” File this album in the Good Music section.*—-Steve Holtje, manager, ESP-Disk *

“Brilliant. Love it: almost a Kraftwerk twist to it.” – Rob Taylor, nmblive.com

Judi Silvano and Bruce Arnold have created their own world of altered guitar and vocal sounds. I really like the opening song, “Remembrances”, an otherworldly blues with Judi’s hip-notic vocals harmonized with subtle alien effects. A sort of fairy-tale like vibe, rather like a distant relative to J.A.’s “White Rabbit’. Ms. Silvano sounds a bit like Iva Bittova on the aptly titled “Space Lullaby”, charming and child-like at times. On “My Neighborhood” Mr. Arnold does a great job of providing sumptuous sonic soundscapes without playing any predictable single note jazz solos; his guitar sounds like an army of chanting monks as he plays those dark floating chords in the background.

Whatever you do, you got to check out this one, “Great Plains”, there is something special going on here, completely enchanting with that great sly groove. This is followed by “Journey to Be Free”, another stunner, with a rocking’ groove but no rhythm team, just the guitar and voice.

I certainly didn’t expect this disc to be the most surprising gem of the month but that is what it is.
– Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

The intuitive understanding between musicians is called “chemistry” and Listen To This, with Judi Silvano and Bruce Arnold has chemistry in abundance. The duets on this recording show a duo intensely tuned into every nuance as they follow the sonic twists and turns of these 12 striking songs.
While Judi Silvano may be best known for her extensive jazz catalogue, her passions extend well beyond, to embrace classical and free improv music. Her background in modern dance also adds an underlying spatial physicality. It is this spatial element that is particularly present here as  Silvano utilizes an array of Eventide effects to enhance her sonic imagination.

Hailing from Sioux Falls South Dakota, Bruce Arnold has been exploring the potentials of his beloved electric guitar for years, using the program SuperCollider to summon up atmospheric soundscapes. His added fascination with 12 tone and pitch class theory as applied to improvisation lends his playing a distinctive harmonic and melodic voice.

When these two composing artists decided to see where a duet improvising situation would lead them, both were surprised at the ease with which they created engrossing, evocative music, allowing the sonic landscape to flow towards compositions that evolved improvisationally.

Thank you, Laura, for making the Great American Songbook exciting and fun again!” – David Gasten, producer, This Is Vintage Now

but he broke format to include Laura)  Listen Here

Laura Ainsworth Swings by the Penthouse to Tell All About
New Vintage

On the internationally-syndicated radio show/podcast “Cocktail Nation,” interviewed by the king of all things swank, host Koop Kooper: Listen Here

ABOUT THE ALBUM

New Vintage is Dallas-based retro jazz vocalist Laura Ainsworth’s third release on Eclectus Records (fourth if you count her audiophile vinyl best-of LP, “Top Shelf.”)  Her debut, Keep It To Yourself, garnered worldwide radio play and critical raves (“The whole album is among the year’s most consistently engaging jazz releases, performed with class and heartfelt passion.” – AllAboutJazz.com).  Her follow-up, Necessary Evil, upped the ante with a big band horn section and film noir theme (“Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording, but surpassed it…” – Eric Harabadian, JazzInside.com).

Now, her third release New Vintage is being hailed as her breakthrough, an album that places her at the forefront of the rising lounge/exotica/bachelor pad genre.  One word that critics have used repeatedly in describing it is “perfect” – from her entrancing, pitch-perfect voice to the creative arrangements, the brilliant musical accompaniment and the sterling audio quality, courtesy of Crystal Clear Sound.  Even the packaging – with its striking images of Laura’s trademark red hair, gorgeous face and figure, elegant gowns and elbow-length gloves – is reminiscent of the classic LP covers of the sultry chanteuses of the 1950s.

With New Vintage, Laura Ainsworth perfects the things her fans have grown to love: brilliant reinventions of well-worn standards such as “Nevertheless” and “Long Ago and Far Away” (here spun into a medley with “You Stepped Out of a Dream”)…Stunning new versions of forgotten gems not recorded in over half a century, such as the long-lost Johnny Mercer ballad, “It’s A Nuisance Having You Around” and “All About You,” once described by Irving Berlin as a “perfect love song”…And creative new mixes of the old and new, such as turning a dated blues/rock song from the swingin’ ’70s into “I Once Knew A Fella,” both a rollicking celebration of female sexual empowerment and a musical salute to the raunchy sax stylings of Vegas legend Sam Butera, a former bandmate of Laura’s dad.  Top it all off with an outstanding original song – “The Man I Love Is Gone” by Laura and George Gagliardi – that sounds like the best midcentury standard that you’ve never heard before.  It’s no wonder both critics and radio hosts are hailing Laura Ainsworth for bringing the Great American Songbook into the 21st century!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Retro jazz vocalist Laura Ainsworth grew up steeped in the Great American Songbook and surrounded by some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century, thanks to her late dad, renowned big band sax/clarinet prodigy, Billy Ainsworth.  Today, she combines those elegant midcentury lounge jazz sounds with her own witty, sexy, modern twists to create an irresistible cocktail that critics have dubbed New Vintage. That’s the name of her terrific third album, which has scored Laura rave reviews, a place on JazzWeek’s Most-Added radio chart, and feature articles in such national publications as Downbeat and Cabaret Scenes.

Based in Dallas, Laura works with longtime pianist/producer Brian Piper, recently honored as “Dallas Jazz Musician of the Year,” and some of the top musicians in North Texas to create both her live shows (she has performed from Manhattan to India to Dubai) and her three critically-acclaimed albums: Keep It To Yourself, Necessary Evil, and now her breakthrough, New Vintage. Her silky, three-octave voice has been compared to such icons as Rosemary Clooney, Julie London and Dinah Shore, and described by reviewers as “rich and distinctive,” “impossibly old-fashioned,” “a mirror reflection into the past,” “the very portrait of West Coast cool,” and “as sweet as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird.”

Laura takes inspiration from such idols as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, not by slavishly imitating their styles, but by doing what they did: finding the best songs – whether new, standards, or long-forgotten gems – and putting her own fresh, unique spin on them.  Her music, like her life, is devoted to preservation, whether it’s restoring her midcentury modern childhood home, filling it with rescued and disabled exotic birds, or breathing exciting new life into the music of the ’20s-’50s to reintroduce it to a whole new generation!
THE CRITICS RAVE ABOUT NEW VINTAGE AND LAURA AINSWORTH
“Sublime… A perfect album!” – Alan Mercer, celebrity photographer and entertainment blogger, AMprofile.blogspot.com

“Laura Ainsworth is breathing new life into the previously staid ‘jazz standards’ album format… With New Vintage, Laura creates a rich, intoxicating atmosphere that transports the mind to another place and time. Laura swings and seduces her way into the heart like only the original jazz singers could previously do. “They don’t make ’em like they used to” no longer applies, as Laura has rediscovered a large portion of the formula, and uses it liberally on the New Vintage album.  Thank you, Laura, for making the Great American Songbook exciting and fun again!” – David Gasten, Producer, “This is Vintage Now”

“Laura Ainsworth’s third album sparkles like champagne… Her voice, a satiny ribbon that seems to flow as an uninterrupted river of downbeats, is rich and distinctive, but it’s her sense of humor that catches you note after note… New Vintage is an album of reinvention, both feet planted in the present, but forever looking back.” – Arnold Wayne Jones, Dallas Voice

“With another lounge revival swinging our way, she’s right at the forefront

of the revival, unearthing worthy songs that haven’t been recorded in the last 50 years, which culls her from the rest of the diva pack that think it all begins and ends with Cole Porter…Streaming like a comet out of Texas, this gal is all gal and proud of it to the tips of her opera length gloves.  A must for jazzbo vocal fans.”  – Chris Spector, Editor & Publisher, MidwestRecord.com

“You can keep those pop divas, the only one for me is Laura Ainsworth!…Ainsworth has beauty, brains, sophistication and comic timing that make her a total performance package… A wonderful modern interpreter of the Great American Songbook as well as thoroughly modern styles.”
– Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside

“…Fun from start to finish, sung with just the right approach by Ainsworth, with support by a hip band led by pianist and arranger Brian Piper.  It is a smile-inducing winner!”  – Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

“Listening to Ainsworth’s sultry, old-fashioned voice, audiences might not know that the 21st century had arrived…Ainsworth has carved a niche for herself as a singer of retro jazz. Her voice comes courtesy of a tradition forged by Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore and Julie London…The instrumentation is almost perfect. The sound is lush, perfectly timed, and neither overwhelms nor hides behind Ainsworth’s voice. Overall, a great album for jazz fans looking to hear a contemporary artist put an earnest spin on classics.”
– Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire.com

Beautiful voice, expressive and sensitive, accompanied by a group with serious professionalism…An excellent album!” – Serge Warin, Radio Grand Brive, Objat, France

“She is able to take you back to those late-night joints with the smoky blue rooms…If you’re a dedicated fan of jazz retro vocal work, you’ll love this one…I give it a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…”
– Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“…Incites listeners to grab their favorite cocktail and dim the lights while engulfed in the smooth jazz ether of her music… New Vintage embraces the vintage sounds of classic jazz and gives the genre a modern lift.” – Susan Frances, Top Amazon.com reviewer

“Laura Ainsworth weaves past and present with stunning power… Her voice is like (a) mirror reflection into the past, conjuring black-and-white images of well-groomed gentlemen in trench coats and fedoras, smoke-enveloped bars, and glamorous women whose beauty is nearly as bright as their jewelry…It might not be long before Dallas is not just known for its oil, Cowboys, and J.R. Ewing but a funny lady with a jewel of a voice…” – Robert Sutton, JazzCorner.com

A FEW REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN’S SOLO PIANO PERFORMANCES

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

“With a dozen Chicago vocalists and a raft of compositions — many written with those particular vocalists in mind — Jeannie Tanner’s double-disc constitutes a love letter to the city’s jazz singers. And hearing their performances, the feeling is clearly mutual.”

– NEIL TESSER/The Jazz Network/Grammy Award Winning Journalist

“Chicago does not lack for engaging jazz trumpeters, vocalists, pianists, bandleaders, songwriters and arrangers — but how many can do it all? Jeannie Tanner happens to be one… If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to hear her pick up a horn, or sing a ballad or unveil an original song, you know that she practically exudes music.”
-Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Words & Music is a collection of Great American Songbook-inspired tunes written by trumpet virtuoso Jeannie TannerTanner takes audiences back to a time when blues singers ruled the nightlife of cabarets and jazz clubs far and wide… “Words & Music” offers a bounty of melodic jazz blends, from bossa nova to cabaret and swing. Each track is a singalong tune, making the recording appealing to a wide audience and crossing over many sectors of jazz.”

The game cheers heard on “Viva Belgrano” echo those we encounter when the best musicians touch us with their passion, imagination and soul.
Bob Blumenthal

The music of GOL makes a strong argument also that Feldman is a terrific talent and deserves to be known alongside other great altos like Steve Coleman, Miguel Zenon, he is definitely in that class.
jAZZ vIEWS

Feldman presents Gol, an eclectic blend of music covering the sounds of South America, Beck and The Beatles, all re-invented and revolving around his signature sound on alto and soprano saxophones. and aptly represents the cresting wave of contemporary saxophonists coming out of Latin America.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ.

Especially on Gol… most of all you are seduced – sometimes to ecstasy and at other times virtually to tears – by the note itself, pregnant with intense emotion.

Debora Galan Releases Jazz Album  “All About Love” featuring Smooth Latin Jazz

“I’m truly getting lost in this beautiful CD”
       – Jay Michaels, Magic 92.5 FM

“Love it! Will be playing it often”
      – David Barron, KSDS 88.3 FM

“With a powerful voice and soul in spades, Debora Galan is a true talent.”
       – Paul Hormick, San Diego Troubadour

With her album, All About Love, composer and vocalist Debora Galán shares original jazz and pop compositions inspired by her Spanish and Cuban ancestry and her attenuating love for melody, rhythm and groove. Aided by producer (Emmy winning and Grammy nominated) Allan Phillips, and a stellar team of musicians, she shares a compendium of smooth and tasteful Latin flavored jazz tunes, with lyrics in English and Spanish. Album single, “Arms of Love,” and corresponding music video, are grabbing attention from fans and receiving airplay in the U.S. and abroad.

Born in Brussels, the bilingual Spanish songstress inherited her love of music from her grandfather and mother who both sang flamenco. Galán moved to the States and began singing professionally in her teens. In the 1980’s, she was living in Washington, D.C., performing with leading bands in Latin jazz and salsa clubs and opening for major Latin stars.

Now at home in San Diego, the stunning vocalist performs widely on the West Coast with occasional forays to Vegas. Having mastered R & B, Gospel, Jazz and Latin styles. Galán brings talent and training to many projects. She has recorded with singer songwriter Steven Ybarra and pianist Greg Manning and collaborated with Greek guitarist Vassilis “Blue” Sotiriou. (Stay tuned for news of an upcoming venture with Christian de Mesones). In her first album as a leader, she allows passion and optimism to infuse her appealing brand of world music.

JAZZ VOCALIST CARMEN LUNDY ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL TOUR DATES TO ACCOMPANY HER CRITICALLY-LAUDED ALBUM, “CODE NOIR”

Cities Include New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami And Chicago

For Your Grammy Voting Consideration
Carmen Lundy Code Noir

Lundy’s ruggedly conversational lyrics and welcome social commentary inhabit territory Abbey Lincoln and Marvin Gaye both might recognize. Her voice swoops down and provides a focal point.  It’s sensuality.  It’s wisdom, it’s curiosity – they all roll into a fetching package.” DownBeat

“Musicians as diversely gifted as Carmen Lundy, who has excelled as a vocalist, composer, lyricist, arranger, guitarist and keyboardist for more than three decades, remain far and few between.” – Jazz Times

Los Angeles, California.  On the heels of her celebrated CD “CODE NOIR” released earlier this year, Jazz vocalist Carmen Lundy has announced additional tour dates to take place this Fall and Winter.  With stops in New York City November 11th  (a live PBS special taping, The Historymakers Honor Franklin Thomas), a four night run at The Jazz Showcase in Chicago November 30th-December 3rd, December 9th at Scullers in Boston and South Jazz in Philadelphia on December 16th and 17th, Lundy will close out 2017 on a high note following rave reviews of the album and her accompanying live performances.  Also slated for February is a date at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Valentine’s Day 2018 and a featured spot at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Baltimore on February 18th.

Never one to limit her creative journeys, Lundy explores the realms of Jazz, Blues, Brazilian Samba and Pop on CODE NOIR with a multitude of messages that reflect not only the complexities of her own mindset, but the disparity of the world at large.  Poignant, heartfelt, angry, joyous, shocked, and saddened are just a few of the emotions conveyed by this wonderfully evocative singer on CODE NOIR via this highly personal musical voyage.

“These songs encompass the musical and artistic influences from the African diaspora and its influence on jazz and other musical genres – the bossa nova, the blues, swing, funk, the exploration into the avant-garde,” says Carmen.  “Yet they also encompass the many emotions that are currently prevalent in this country.  We are going through tough times with a country that is sorely divided and many of these tracks reflect the feelings that we as human beings are going through on an individual level.  CODE NOIR actually refers to the first law ever written by a person in power of a sovereign nation/empire – the King of France Louis XIV – the first law to disallow and make illegal the integration of the African race into white European society.

Lundy either wrote or co-wrote all twelve tracks on the record which features Patrice Rushen on piano, Ben Williams on bass, Jeff Parker on electric guitar, Kendrick Scott on drums and percussion and Elisabeth Oei on background vocals.  In addition to vocals, Lundy also plays keyboards and guitar.

ABOUT VELOURS:

On her fourth solo album, Velours, Valerie Ghent draws on the full range of her talents forged over 20+ years working with music luminaries Ashford & Simpson, Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Debbie Harry & Billy Preston to deliver a breathtaking, spell-binding performance that draws the listener in and never lets go.

Recorded in the South of France and NYC, the 11 original songs on Velours propel the listener from the transcendent luminosity and opening invocation of Love Divine to the exuberant Get Funkay, from the unstoppable New York City Streets to the heart-stopping ballad, Light in My Life.  The mesmerizing funk groove of title song Velours literally flows into the American-songbook inspired Linger (with accompanying string quartet), while future R+B classic It’s Got To Be You plays smooth counterpoint to the reggae-inspired Phased and the gospel blues of 30 Days. The deep groove of On & On flows like a river, and Love Will Keep Me Strong brings us back to the source.

Backed up by a band of internationally acclaimed musicians and vocalists from NYC, France and Guinea, Velours takes the listener on a journey through smooth soul, feel-good R+B, intimate ballads, sun-drenched reggae and pure funk. Featuring A-list musicians playing live on each song, Valerie has conjured up a hot, authentic sound, recording live with real musicians. “Real music you can touch.”

Pascal Bokar AFRO BLUE GRAZZ “SO LONG”

 American Shores (Savanna Jazz Records)

Throughout his productive musical career, guitarist/vocalist Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam has always understood the connections between West African music and the sounds of the American South. His landmark book Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta discusses the music of the three empires that dominated the culture of West Africa starting in the 6th century, tracing the music from its role in the culture and daily life of Africa to its eventual emergence in the United States. In his teachings, lectures and music (where he displays his own individual voice), Pascal has consistently paid tribute to his ancestors. “As a musician, I have always tried to synthesize the convergence of African esthetics and appreciate their influence in the music of the African American communities of the American South, from the rural sounds of the Blues and Gospel into this music we call Jazz.”

Pascal Bokar’s American Shores, in the “AfroBlueGrazz” style coined by the album’s producer Greg Landau, is an ambitious fusion of textures and styles that comes from Bokar’s unique cultural perspective. As an accomplished jazz guitarist and scholar of African music and jazz he consistently heard clear examples of African musical concepts and instruments throughout his musical explorations. In this project he brought together accomplished musicians from Appalachia’s bluegrass style with Senegalese master drummers, African-American Rhythm and Blues singers, funky keyboards, and the stomp/clap percussion of a gospel choir. This eclectic cross cultural mix brings together long lost musical relatives as a platform for Pascal’s rich guitar and vocal improvisation.

Pascal Bokar previous recording Guitar Balafonics was selected by Downbeat Magazine as one of the “Best CDs of 2015.” Pascal Bokar is listed in Jazz journalist Scott Yanov’s Book entitled Great Jazz Guitars. Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam is also the owner of the Award Winning Savanna Jazz Club of San Carlos, CA, and is recipient of the Jim Hall Jazz Master Award from Berklee College of Music.  Notable musicians on this record: fiddler Blaine Sprouse (Bill Monroe), bassist Tony Saunders (Eric Clapton & David Crosby), Gospel Hawkins Family, and keyboardist Steve Carter (George Benson & Bobby Womack).

What The Press Is Saying About

Pablo Ziegler Trio
“Jazz Tango”

“Ziegler continues to push the art form forward… nuevo tango’s leading living exponent.”

All About Jazz

“There’s no question that Ziegler takes the tango to levels of sophistication and refinement probably undreamed of by Piazzolla.”

The Chicago Tribune

“No one embodies the art of the tango better.”

Lincoln Journal Star

“He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural… just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard.”

The Los Angeles Times

“A trip to the heart of this music… [Ziegler] is a sort of musical brujo, a conjurer who can make all within earshot a believer in his message.”
New York City Jazz Record

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by Dodie Miller-Gould
May 12, 2017

With Pablo Ziegler’s new CD, “Jazz Tango,” the tango lives and breathes–a common theme in Ziegler’s work; to ordinary people, there seems only so much a person can do with a tango. On this release, the music moves as if it possessed its own blood and limbs, and renders the tango a sinewy and electric thing, a move that impresses old and new fans alike.

Fortunately, all the songs are recorded live. There is something gratifying about hearing other people, faceless strangers in this case, applaud a performance that you, the listener, have also enjoyed. It is unclear whether the passion for Ziegler’s work comes from his approach—the task of making the tango new, or if it is the gravitas that comes with being a craftsman of his form. Maybe it is both. The music is enjoyable, and will teach listeners about music, about tango and about Ziegler.

In this release, Ziegler, on piano, is joined by Hector del Curto playing bandoneon, and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar. The “bandoneon” is a type of concertina popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Lithuania. The effect the instrument has on this CD is an emotive quality brought about by willowy swells and long, pensive notes. The way all three parts work together for an evocative impression on songs like “Muchacha de Boedo” where listeners can hear the piano, guitar and bandoneon take turns rising and falling, until (seemingly) exhausted, they fade out at the end. This song, like many of Ziegler’s compositions, sound as though they are the movie scores without the accompanying film.

“Libertango” is a frantic mash-up of piano and guitar, until, less than two minutes in, the piano begins a spirited motif that the other instruments begin to complement. Roughly a quarter of the way through, the song morphs again, into the tango that many listeners are used to.

“Michelangelo 70” is spirited and moody, like an expressive dancer. The word “rollicking” comes to mind at times. The bandoneon is used to punctuate the twists and turns in the song. Listeners can envision the graceful but strong moves of tango dancers.

Since his debut album in 1990, “Cuarteto Para El Nuevo Tango,” Ziegler has crafted a career out of joining the traditional to the new and making an art out of it all.

Lemon Wire

A real cooker right out of the box, it makes you glad that Ziegler is the kind of muso that sends you records where the reviews just write themselves. A mostly original date with a few Piazzollas tossed in to appease the tourists, the piano ace justifies my decision to abandon piano lessons when I was eight because I must have instinctively known I could never play like this. A masterful work by a master that loves tango so much he’d rather use his energy and smarts to move the form forward in fine style rather than keep it embalmed in amber. Must hearing if you’ve got the slightest of tango bugs.

Chris Spector Midwest Record

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by George W. Harris
October 5, 2017

Pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler creates an intriguing trio with Hector Del Curto on bandoneon and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar through a mix of originals and pieces from Nuevo Tango icon Astor Piazzolla. The three Piazzolla pieces, “Michelangelo 70,” “Fuga y Mesterio” and “Libertango” are filled with complex moves, sensuality and drama as the strings are tapped, strummed and spliced. The dynamics rise and fall like a wave on “La Fundicion” and Old World charms are in abundance on “Elegante Canyenguito.” Ziegler is misty-eyed on “Milonga Del Adios” and the team plays a game of Peek-A-Boo on the clever “Blues Porteno.” Lots of thought mixed with heart.

A Sleepin’ Bee uses Wilson’s iconic collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing as the starting point for a unique take on the tribute album

“Every single song in this collection hits a sweet spot of a different sort, but the most pleasing aspect of the recording is how it uncovers the stripped-down, soulful side of Kinhan’s voice.” – Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Echoes of the artist in her own voice, that’s what so lovingly resounds in the voice of Lauren Kinhan on A Sleepin’ Bee, her tribute to Nancy Wilson.” – Michael Bourne, WBGO

“Her approach to the material is anything but conventional; with her big, flexible voice, Kinhan brings the passion of a soul singer to the improvisatory reach of a jazz diva.” – Suzanne Lorge, New York City Jazz Record

“Her luscious, velvet voice is a good place to rest your weary head.” – Ken Blanchard, Jazznote SD “A vocal tour de force” – Jazz Journal, Sally Evans-Darby

“Lauren Kinhan is a tremendously gifted jazz singer.” – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Whether on her own highly-acclaimed albums, as a 25-year member of the beloved vocal group New York Voices, or as co-founder of two diverse and inventive supergroups, Moss and JaLaLa, singer/songwriter Lauren Kinhan has always forged her own path as a performer, composer and improviser. With her latest, A Sleepin’ Bee (due out October 6 on her own Dotted i Records), Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions with a new release that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply.

If the sudden appearance of an album’s worth of standards in a catalogue dominated by original songs comes as a surprise, the process of its creation is just as atypical. While Kinhan spent much of 2016 conceiving, rehearsing and workshopping the project, the circumstances of the recording arose suddenly through the auspices of her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. The session suddenly became an educational opportunity as well as a record date, providing a small group of Berklee students the invaluable privilege of observing and engaging in a recording session at the highest level.

First and foremost, though, A Sleepin’ Bee is a celebration of Nancy Wilson on the occasion of the genre- hopping singer’s 80th birthday. While Kinhan shares Wilson’s penchant for blurring stylistic boundaries, her choice of material focuses on Wilson’s early jazz albums, particularly her collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing. Those recordings proved to be a jumping-off point for Kinhan, who utterly transforms these classic and obscure numbers with the help of pianist/creative partner Andy Ezrin and veteran producer Elliot Scheiner as well as a stellar band featuring bassist Matt Penman, drummer Jared Schonig and special guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

With three brilliant albums of her own songs under her belt, not to mention her game-changing work with three distinctive vocal groups and wide-ranging collaborations with singular artists from Ornette Coleman to Bobby McFerrin, Kinhan decided it was finally time to create an album more in line with the jazz tradition of interpreting

a book of standards. Of course, Kinhan has never been one to follow an obvious route, so the results quickly became something wholly her own. “I approached this project similarly to the way I write songs, except that in this case that creativity was expressed in the arranging and approach to the lyrics,” she explains. “I wanted to make an album that was inspired by Nancy Wilson but still conveys my point of view in the way that I think about, interpret and reimagine music.”

The starting point for the project quickly became Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley, the 1961 album on which the 24-year-old singer was backed by Adderley’s incredible quintet with his brother Nat, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Kinhan had fallen in love with the album as a young girl searching through her parents’ record collection, enamored with both Wilson’s soulful voice and her elegant image. “I remember being 7 or 8, staring at the cover of this beautiful woman in a yellow dress and connecting with the songs, the arrangements and the bite of her tone. I know those songs like I know the songs of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. So revisiting them, they feel like a favorite cashmere sweater.”

The 12 tracks on Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley were evenly split between vocal and instrumental pieces, and Kinhan interprets all but one of the vocal tunes on A Sleepin’ Bee. To fill out the repertoire, she began delving into Wilson’s catalogue – only reaching 1964 before she had more than enough to work with. The remaining repertoire is carefully cultivated from Wilson’s early-60s releases, the bulk of it coming from The Swingin’s Mutual!, Wilson’s 1960 collaboration with pianist George Shearing.

“In a way,” Kinhan says, “A Sleepin’ Bee is also a tribute to Cannonball and George Shearing and the fine musicians that played on the original recordings. The pairing of the voice and great players is what it’s all about. It’s never just about singing for me; it’s the whole creative spectrum of arranging notes and form, and connecting with the musicians.”

Those elements are combined and rearranged in disparate and intriguing ways throughout A Sleepin’ Bee, from the laid-back swing of “Let’s Live Again” to the haunted melancholy of “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” whether stretching the melody like taffy on “Never Will I Marry” (parried by Berklee classmate Jensen’s darting trumpet) or finding a playfully bold character at the heart of the title tune. She effectively melds Nat Adderley’s “The Old Country” with Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” and fully imbues “Born To Be Blue” with the remorseful mood inherent in its title. Kinhan’s vulnerable, stripped-down version of “Save Your Love For Me” completely reimagines Wilson’s iconic take – which Kinhan previously performed both with and for Wilson herself, first on a recording with the New York Voices and later with the Voices as part of Wilson’s 2004 induction as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Wilson’s debut single, “Guess Who I Saw Today,” whose lyrics haven’t exactly aged well. Kinhan puts a new twist on the tune not only with her sly vocal performance – which acidly comments on a song that frames its tale of infidelity with some decidedly Eisenhower-era social mores – but with an updated arrangement that makes the song her own, apart from Wilson’s quintessential version.

“You better have a perspective on this song, especially as a woman who’s been an outspoken feminist my whole life,” Kinhan says. “It’s not that cheating is old-fashioned; it’s the way that the story is pitched from the beginning, drawing an outmoded picture of marriage where the woman stays home, does the shopping and dotes on her husband, who spends his day at work. To chew on those words was so strange – but it was also fun to hold that mirror up to society and look at its absurdity.”

“(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am” was a fresh discovery for Kinhan in her research for the project. Despite Wilson’s recording having won a Grammy in 1964, it was not that version but a less ornate live rendition that grabbed Kinhan’s ear, and she takes a similar approach, powerfully singing with gospel-inflected soul accompanied only by Ezrin’s lyrical piano and Penman’s subtle bass. The at times inane lyrics of “Happy Talk” are sent up in a slapstick carnival atmosphere to close the album on a particularly offbeat note.

Recording the album with multiple Grammy-winner Elliot Scheiner at Berklee’s state-of-the-art Shames Family Scoring Stage meant turning the studio into a classroom, a prospect that at first seemed daunting but that Kinhan quickly embraced. “The students brought a performance atmosphere to the session that was beautiful,” she says. “Normally recording sessions can make you incredibly self-conscious, often putting yourself under the microscope, but knowing there was an audience was really liberating. The students witnessed great players laying it down right in front of their eyes, and that made for an inspired environment. The added bonus of sharing Nancy Wilson’s legacy with them was a Sleepin’ Bee we hope to have reawakened for generations to come.”

JAZZ VILLAGE [PIAS]
SETS OCTOBER 20, 2017
RELEASE FOR WORLD-RENOWNED
BASSIST/COMPOSER
KYLE EASTWOOD’S IN TRANSIT

“Not since the halcyon days of Art Blakey and Horace Silver has anyone carried the hard bop quintent mantle so confidently and assiduously as Eastwood and Company.”…..Jazzweekly.com

“IN TRANSIT finds Kyle Eastwood and company in their element while still exploring new territories and classics.  Check it out.  It’s hot!” ………Sounds of Timeless Jazz

(LOS ANGELES, October 17, 2017)  Capping two extraordinary decades as a recording and performing artist, Kyle Eastwood’s stylistically eclectic new album In Transit reflects the whirlwind reality of the breakneck schedule that Kyle and his longtime ensemble keep as they perform three quarters of the year in Europe – with a yearly jaunt to Asian countries and occasional swings to the U.S.

The Los Angeles bred, Paris based bassist and composer estimates that about half of the tracks were “road tested,” with a few rendered completely fresh in the studio. “That’s part of the concept, all the moving around and spending time on the road and working through our favorite material.

”Just as on his previous two critically acclaimed collections The View from Here and Time Pieces, Kyle plays with a powerfully swinging yet beautifully soulful and sensual quintet of young English musicians. The longest-term members of Kyle’s powerhouse quintet are pianist Andrew McCormack (12 years) and trumpeter and flugelhornist Quentin Collins (9 years). Newer to the fold, and adding brilliantly to the shared chemistry, are tenor and soprano saxophonist Brandon Allen (who made his first appearance on Time Pieces) and the latest member, drummer Chris Higginbottom.

After inviting renowned Italian saxophonist Stefano Di Battista to join the ensemble on numerous gigs throughout Europe, Kyle invited him to bring his lush and lyrical sensibilities to the Sextant La Fonderie Studio in Malakoff, France to record on four tracks of the new album. The most prominent of these is the intimate and dreamlike acoustic re-imagining of “Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso,” which was penned by Ennio Morricone, one of Kyle’s favorite film composers; having previously played with the great Italian composer, Di Battista brings an intimate familiarity to the piece.

“We all have similar tastes in music,” he adds, “and after playing together for a while have truly developed a unique musical camaraderie and dialogue that allows us to play seamlessly in sync and intuitively know just when to break for every member to take a solo Growing up, Kyle’s legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, loved jazz and played the piano, and his mother spun everything from Motown to jazz from the 50’s to the 70’s. Kyle’s initial passion for jazz was kindled not only by attending concerts by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich and (his first) Count Basie, but also having the opportunity to meet these legends.

While mastering piano, guitar, electric and ultimately the acoustic bass, Kyle’s ever-evolving jazz sensibilities gravitated towards classic groups of the 50’s and 60’s that captured the spirit of what he calls “lyrical hard bop, full of groove and sophisticated harmonies. This style was exemplified by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers when Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter were in the group, Horace Silver’s Blue Note recordings and different quintets Miles Davis had throughout the 60’s. As a bassist, Kyle was also deeply influenced by another giant of this era, Charles Mingus, whom he and his ensemble pays spirited homage to via an explosive, horn fired version of the classic “Boogie Stop Shuffle” which wraps In Transit’s multi-faceted journey.

The rhythmically intense, vibrantly re-imagined jazz classics on In Transit – Count Basie’s “Blues in Hoss’ Flat,” Mingus’ “Boogie Stop Shuffle” and Thelonious Monk’s “We See” – create a wonderful dual sense for Kyle of coming full circle paying homage to his influences while bringing those traditions into a forward thinking contemporary context. Original compositions like the freewheeling funk-jazz hybrid “Rockin’ Ronnies” (an homage to Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the band’s favorite London hotspot) and the brisk, high octane trip through a frenetic “Rush Hour” highlight the compositional talents of each member individually and collectively. Other key tracks include the McCormack penned “Jarreau,” a whimsical romp that pays tribute to the late great Al Jarreau, which borrows some harmony lines and chord changes from the singer’s “Not Like This,” and “Soulful Times,” a soaring and soul-jazz piece that opens the collection and introduces the ensemble’s sense of easy swing, bright piano harmonies, dynamic horns and the infectious pocket grooves of Kyle and Chris Higginbottom.

Throughout the first decade of his recording career, Kyle flirted with a variety of interesting stylistic approaches, including sophisticated electro-cool jazz (Paris Blue, 2004), smooth and playfully grooving jazz with hints of the 70s’ (Now, 2006) and an artsy, chic, urban, culturally eclectic vibe (Metropolitan, 2009). The release of 2011’s Songs From the Chateau marked a decidedly fresh new era in the bassist’s musical evolution, committed to the kind of ensemble spirit Kyle speaks so fondly of.

True to its kinetic title, In Transit finds Kyle and his band running the gamut of emotional musical terrain while opening up to fresh horizons with a sense of curiosity and adventure. “I really think everyone played their pants off on this album, and I’m really happy with the way it turned out,”

“One of the essential groups to emerge from the nineteen-eighties East Village scene, the Jazz Passengers celebrate their thirtieth anniversary with the release of a bighearted, satirical new record, “Still Life with Trouble.” The band’s origins can be traced to the pit of the Big Apple Circus, where its founders, the saxophonist Roy Nathanson and the trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, forged a lifelong friendship and a musical collaboration that soon led to a stint with their like-minded downtown predecessors the Lounge Lizards. The Passengers’ new album, like its previous efforts, is marked by a central contrast: breezy, comic vocals mingling with beautiful, unpredictable melodies and abstract harmonies that suggest an underlying seriousness. This show features most of the stellar original band members, including Bill Ware, on vibraphone, and E. J. Rodriguez, on drums and percussion, but the core of the group’s sound is still the warm interplay between Nathanson’s frenzied sax solos and Fowlkes’s groove-filled trombone lines.”

 Dear Jazz Fan,

I’d like to tell you about an album, “Rediscovered Ellington”, that I think you will enjoy as much as I have.
I met Garry Dial at the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine’s Gala for Music Therapy a few years back . Garry has a music therapy fund in his name for the Center at Mount Sinai West in New York City as well as being a performer at the annual Gala.

Last year he brought to my attention his new cd  “Re-Discovered Ellington”.  To quote a recent review of the cd in the jazz journal“All about Jazz”:

“After sitting on his archival collection of rare Duke Ellington music for close to forty years, pianist Garry Dial decided it was time the music was heard. Connecting with his musical partner and prominent reedman Dick Oatts, the Rediscovered Ellington project was launched. Illustrating the mystical relationship that Dial and Oatts have with Ellington and Hodges, “I Must Be Mad” is performed in hushed tones as a fitting farewell to the music, and in honor of their enduring contribution to Jazz history. The Duke would certainly approve.”

I am thrilled that Garry ,Dick and Richard have rediscovered my grandfather Duke Ellington’s rare and unheard music after all this time .They have recorded a beautiful project with respect, elegance and dignity. Our family is very proud .

Dear Jazz Lover,

I am writing to share “Re-Discovered Ellington” with you. I’m very excited about this release because it is personal for me.
In the late 1970’s my mother Ruth Ellington and I hired pianist Garry Dial to record for the family’s archives the vast catalogue of music my uncle Duke Ellington left behind.

It’s  brought me  great pleasure that after 38 years Garry has teamed up with saxophonist Dick Oatts and Richard DeRosa, arranger and conductor of the WDR Big Band, to record their arrangements of my uncle’s rare and unheard music. Their arrangements and performances have captured the essence of Duke Ellington while giving the music a personal and modern twist .

Rediscovered Ellington”
New Takes on Duke’s Rare and Unheard Music

It’s no secret that jazz composers have been profoundly influenced by classical composers and vice versa. Duke’s version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite is a fine example. Duke embraced the classical composer’s music with love and respect but transformed it in his own beautifully sincere way – the way it worked most naturally for his band and himself. Miles Davis and Gil Evans fell in love with Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez which became part of their project Sketches of Spain.

Rediscovered Ellington is presented in the same respectful manner. To continue Ellington’s legacy, we resurrected these compositions with our perspective through personalized arrangements. Although a few of them suggest a “tip of the hat” to Duke’s sound, most of these renditions showcase how quality music may be transformed into something new and refreshing while respecting the original essence of its composer. We hope you enjoy these compositions in this context.

Garry Dial, Dick Oatts, and Rich DeRosa.

In 1979, my mother, Ruth Ellington, and I wanted to record and archive all of the Tempo Music catalogue. This included compositions by my uncle, Duke Ellington, and many of his musical associates. We hired Garry Dial to do this job. I am thrilled, that after 38 years, Garry has revisited the more obscure tunes of Duke Ellington. Rediscovered Ellington will bring this beautiful, rarely heard music to the public eye. Garry Dial, Dick Oatts and Rich DeRosa, along with the WDR Big Band, have managed to capture the essence of Ellington. I am proud of their swinging contribution and I know my mother and uncle would be smiling.

Stephen James
Nephew of Duke Ellington

Here’s the story of how a poodle named Bravo inadvertently became responsible for this collection of rarely heard gems by the great Duke Ellington.
In the late 1970’s I had the honor of working with Duke Ellington’s sister Ruth and her son Stephen James. They hired me to record in alphabetical order the entire Tempo Music catalogue of Duke’s music and his associates for their family archive. Entering Ruth’s apartment was quite an experience. There stood Duke’s famous white piano with his original painting of Satin Doll hanging on the wall. I was speechless and somewhat daunted. Ruth and Stephen were most gracious and warm to me, putting me at ease.

They described the job and when I saw how incredibly prolific Duke had been, I said, “You probably need ten pianists to complete this project!” I suggested Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Barron and Dick Hyman among others. “Do you want this job or not?” said Ruth. I gulped and said, “Yessssssss!”

I went to Ruth’s apartment for about three months, five days a week. The music was in various forms: a sketch, a score, and even a published lead sheet. I was a kid in a candy store. As I played through the tunes, Stephen and his brother Michael would stop over and give me the eye if I wasn’t getting the feel right. A wink meant I nailed it. In this way their wisdom guided me.

When it was time to record, the little poodle Bravo began singing along. It became evident he was not to be silenced. Therefore I suggested to Ruth that I should copy the pages, take them to my apartment and record them there without the barking. That’s why 38 years later I am in the unique position of having these scores of Duke’s music in my filing cabinets.

Rich DeRosa, Dick Oatts and I have collaborated on many projects together over the years. In 2015, Rich was chief conductor and arranger for the WDR Big Band. He contacted me about doing a Dial & Oatts project with the band. I thought of the trove of Duke Ellington treasures I had on file. Why not resurrect these rare, obscure tunes and present them for a new audience as well as diehard Ellington fans?

We selected nine tunes and got to work arranging them in our own style for the big band. We traveled to Cologne, Germany, where we performed the arrangements with the band at the Philharmonic halls in Cologne and Essen. During the day we recorded this CD in the studio. What a thrill to play our versions of Duke’s tunes with these great musicians!

It’s always an honor to work with my musical brothers, Dick Oatts and Rich DeRosa. Both Dick and Richie’s fathers were great musicians in the era of Ellington. Oatts’ dad, Jack, played alto in the style of Johnny Hodges. Richie’s dad, Clem, was a drummer and arranger who led many famous bands including the Glen Miller Big Band. These dads would be so proud of their sons and this project!

A few months after we made the recording, I ran into Duke’s granddaughter Mercedes at an event. I told her about our “Rediscovered Ellington” project and she gave us her blessing. Thank you, Mercedes!

I called Stephen, now president of Tempo Music, to tell him about the work. It was like old home week. We reminisced about the days I came to the apartment to help archive Duke’s music. I thank him for his support, love of life and belief in our project. Much appreciated, Stephen. Bravo!

Garry Dial

During the summer of 1961, my father took my brother Jim and me to a joint concert of Duke Ellington and Count Basie at the Des Moines Art Center. My father was a musician and huge fan of both bands. They were all legends in the Oatts house and, at 8 years old, my dream was to get an autograph of Duke and Johnny Hodges. During the short break, I had my pad and pencil ready for anyone in a tuxedo to sign their name. I was very shy but went up to two gentlemen who were standing together near the outside bar. I waited until they were done with their conversation and they saw me standing there wide-eyed.

They asked if they could help me so I asked for their autographs. They were extremely patient and nice and when they gave them back, I was shocked to read the names Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. All I could stutter was a “thank you”. Then my father came over to translate my surprise and ultimate gratitude. To this day, it was probably the most inspiring musical memory from my childhood.

As I watched all those great musicians get on the bus after the concert, my dream to play great music as a career began. Mom threw out our baseball cards twenty years later and the autographs probably went with them….

Dick Oatts

Duke Ellington showed jazz composers and arrangers the concept of writing not only for instruments but, more importantly, for the people who would play them. In my role as arranger/orchestrator for the WDR Big Band, Duke’s model has been a great influence for me. My choices of soloists, written and improvised, were always made for specific members of the band. Consequently, the unique personality of each player is naturally connected to the context of each arrangement.

Rich DeRosa

Rediscovered Ellington is a rarity that comes along once every few decades, a trove of mostly unheard music by a music legend fashioned into a glimmering yet meditative production. The great Duke Ellington, for whom this album is a tribute, once observed that “there are two kinds of music”, the kind that connects to the audience with sincerity and the kind that doesn’t. Judging by the response of listeners worldwide, Ellington’s music is of the first kind: beautiful, cultivated, resonant, and timeless.

But for there to be any audience connection at all, the music must first be heard. And that’s what is special about this stunner. Maestros in their own right, Garry Dial, Dick Oatts, and Rich DeRosa, unearthed these compositions from obscurity. They turned musical amnesia into memorable and vivid works that bring Ellington’s life and music into sharper focus not only for the seasoned Ellington diaspora but those new to his sizable repertoire. Dial, Oatts, and DeRosa shaped these compositions with colorful and immaculate arrangements, rendering Ellington afresh and anew.

Prior to this recording, few of these works had a brief public life. Most were unknown to the general public. While a few of the arrangements suggest an homage to Ellington’s sound, most of the works showcase how music may be given new and refreshing life while respecting the composer’s essence.

The album opens with Hey Baby, a mid-tempo swing number recorded in 1946 and released on RCA Victor. It’s also a well-known tune from Blue Rose, the 1956 Rosemary Clooney album. It brings the virtuosity of soloists Oatts (soprano sax), Paul Heller (tenor sax), Dial (piano) and Johan Hörlen (alto sax) to the forefront, and showcases the big band’s mighty brass section in multicolored shout sections. Let The Zoomers Drool, an Ellington/Johnny Hodges tune, was originally released as a live album in 1945 on the Jazz Society label. It opens with a ruminating stride piano riff, enveloped by a slower swing feel, rich with a bluesy call-and-response between the piano and ensemble.

I Like Singing is a gorgeous ballad from Saturday Laughter, a musical Ellington wrote with the still-living lyricist Herbert Martin – and it draws upon Ellington’s classical influence: opening without drums, the sections take on an orchestral quality that features reedy doubles and a plush piano solo by Dial. The drums and bass enter, and the tune transforms into an engaging yet pensive ballad.

Just A Gentle Word From You Will Do is vintage Ellington with a straight-ahead melody recast across the horn and reed sections. This work was composed mostly by Onzy Matthews, a pianist and arranger who worked with Ellington in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was undoubtedly performed live, but there is no previously-known recording. And to wit, this is some debut rendition, with Oatts on flute and Ludwig Nuss on trombone!

Introspection has no known recording, and is anything but introspective. The up-tempo swing sets up the WDR to showcase its legendary tightness of sound and precision of phrases. Similarly, Kiki also has no known recording. On this track, the big band is fully portrayed with a full, plush, even lavish aesthetic, which makes this album required listening for those looking to learn or merely just enjoy the craft of large jazz ensemble performance. For example, the trumpet section commands the lead line with alacrity, and John Marshall’s blazing trumpet solo stands out with achingly beautiful timbre.

Love Came was recorded in 1965 and released on the Red Baron label. The melancholy and longing melodic line is presented by trumpeter Andy Haderer, and the tune opens into a jazz ballad, allowing for one of the quieter and more introspective spaces on the album.

The penultimate tune of this album, KCOR (rock spelled backward), is thought to have been written late in Ellington’s life. But very little information exists on its origins: this long-form piece diverges so sharply in style from Ellington’s body of work that it probably did not receive much attention through his life.

The final track, I Must Be Mad, was written by Ellington and Patricia Petremont. She was a lyricist for several of Ellington’s more obscure works such as My Lonely Love, When You’ve Had It All, and This Is Where I Get Off – all from the late 1960s. The searching ballad begins with an alto sax and piano duet that illustrates the uncanny parallel relationship that Dial and Oatts have to Ellington and Hodges. Both Dial and Ellington have a way of orchestrating at the piano that enhances a melody. Although Oatts’ sound is different from Hodges’, both embrace a melody with warmth and soulfulness. Here it is Dial and Oatts who give the album a loving, thoughtful send-off.

Rediscovered Ellington is a through-and-through treasure, and music lovers should reserve their deepest gratitude for Dial, Oatts, DeRosa, and the WDR Big Band who have given the world the album of the year whose musical genesis spans many decades.

Jazz Beyond Borders Announces

Debora Galán – All About Love

NEWLY RELEASED ON SUNNYSIDE RECORDS: “EXPEDITION”

Denny Zeitlin & George Marsh
continue their duo electro-acoustic adventures in free improvisation

(Sunnyside Records 1487)
Street Date: July 21, 2017

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

“There is a wonderfully free-flowing spirit to the new Denny Zeitlin & George Marsh CD Expedition. The music percolates like water from a newly tapped spring. It has an organic slipstream feel to it that comes from these two brilliant musicians capturing themselves exploring totally “in the moment” improvisations. Script-less forays into the possibilities; Zeitlin’s electro-acoustic keyboard artistry paired with Marsh’s intuitively complementary percussive accentuation…”
Ralph A. Miriello, HuffingtonPost

“… The number of jazz musicians who were innovating 4-5 decades ago and continue to innovate today is very small; Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh certainly belong in that exclusive club. Expedition continues their long, provocative journey.” S. Victor Aaron, SomethingElseReviews

“…[Zeitlin] is able to create – in all of his music, composed and improvised – heroic portraits and vast panoramas as well as infusing them with an intimacy and an emotional intensity which can only be described as the “poetry of feeling.” …The effect, as in all the recordings of the past is breathtaking… As ever, Mr. Marsh plays above and beyond the call of rhythm. His is a music fused into the music of Denny Zeitlin. He (George Marsh) is vigourous – viscerally so – when the music drives him to it. But there is also a gentle lyricism…. No matter what the applied force, George Marsh always plays like a man inspired with such presence and seriousness that every moment sounds carefully weighed up. Together, Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh make music that never shows any sense of calculation or strain and it would be hard to find playing of greater immediacy in the music of another piano-drum duo.” Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

“[album pre-release review of ‘Geysers’] It takes deeply rooted and restively curious minds to make music like this. On the opening track of this duo’s new album, “Expedition,” Mr. Marsh’s sense of syncopation on the drum kit refers back to before even the establishment of jazz rhythm. Mr. Zeitlin, an inveterate piano innovator since the 1960s and a fusion pioneer, plays a variety of keyboards and synthesizers; he conjures a vague drone in the middle-to-low range, circling your inner ear with melodies and effects. They wander at first, then find direction; they deepen and soak in, rather than evaporate.”                                             Giovanni Russonello, NewYorkTimes

“… While the scent of freedom carries on the air across this entire album, the music is rarely formless. It grooves, breathes, flows, and evolves in kaleidoscopic fashion, taking and/or changing shape through a near-telepathic process… Entire tracks—or “sound paintings,” if we’re going with the Zeitlin-Marsh vernacular—often possess a magnetic draw born of language and development… Any opportunity to hear Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh take us into the great unknown is an opportunity worth taking.” Dan Bilawsky, AllAboutJazz

“Pianist Denny Zeitlin, [Roscoe] Mitchell’s contemporary and fellow native of Chicago is equally dedicated to ceaseless artistic growth…Zeitlin and Marsh’s unplanned mutual inventiveness is so logical that it often sounds as if it must have been conceived on manuscript paper, but no; it is spontaneous improvisation… The album is a remarkable technical accomplishment. More important, it is a solid musical achievement that has the virtue of being—if you’ll pardon the outmoded, uncool, expression—entertaining.”
Doug Ramsey, ArtsJournal.com/Rifftides

” …He and percussionist par excellence George Marsh continue to explore the dynamics of creation at an exciting level of interaction on Expedition. And what’s more, while doing so, they heed bassist Bill Crow’s admonition about the purpose of Jazz – they have fun. You can sense the thrill of adventure in the music they are making as the music is alive; boundless; unpredictable – just the way it should be at this stage of their long careers in music.”                                            Steven Cerra, JazzProfiles.blogspot

This is not the first collaboration between pianist/keyboardist Denny Zeitlin and drummer George Marsh, but it’s the strongest… Both artists use broad brush strokes on these abstract paintings of sounds, taking the listener to other exotic worlds.” George W. Harris, JazzWeekly

“… Now, the label has issued “Expedition” and it’s even more fascinating and exploratory than the duo’s debut…What makes this album and its pastiche of sounds, noises, and melodies so impressive is that the music is always accessible, always intelligent.  You should go on this trip; it’s not “novelty” music but the adventures of two musicians who have always pushed beyond the mundane, the tried and true, into the heart of creative music.”                                             Richard B. Kamins, StepTempest.Blogspot

“What began with the intriguing 2015 release Riding the Moment has taken a huge leap on Expedition. The electro-acoustic explorations of keyboardist Denny Zeitlin and percussionist George Marsh dive even deeper into the “electro” part of that equation. Melodies lash out like streaks of lightning across a nighttime sky. Rhythms are the rainstorm that follows. The harmonies are the thick clouds that instill wonder at how such beauty can exist within so much chaos. It’s a special kind of dramatic music that can elicit big smiles, and Zeitlin and Marsh do so again and again.” Dave Sumner, Daily.Bandcamp

“[4.5 out of 5 stars]… There’s a lot for the ears to digest. Synthesizers—and Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh—are capable of so much, as in the closer/title tune, with its bowed bass-like opening that evolves in the direction of the symphonic, featuring a horn-like monologue backed by electro-drones and swirlings, interjected with Marsh’s robust percussive poetry. A superb wrap-up to this set of the Denny Zeitlin/George Marsh innovations.” Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz

“Denny Zeitlin, George Marsh reunite for cosmic explosion on “Expedition”…  an intriguing continuation of the duo’s genre-less, free jazz experimentation from the 2015 album, Riding The Moment… The duo remains firmly outside the lines of traditional music, or any specific genre.. The visual equivalent of their Expedition is one of traversing a vast forest filled with lots of animated wildlife and flowers in bloom…”
Carol Banks Weber, JazzMedium
