Eddie Who – REMIX (Music Video)

The Eddie Who Remix is a funky dance version of a tune originally written by Eddie Harris about what he has accomplished as a jazz musician throughout his career .

Eddie Harris was one the greatest tenor saxophonist of his era. In the course of recording more than 70 albums, and authoring 7 music books, Eddie has displayed himself as a jazz artist , also known as The Electrifying Eddie Harris who has played blues, rock, jazz fusion, straight-ahead, soul, and funk grooves. Eddie’s pioneering work in musical electronics (the Varitone electronic saxophone amplification system) and the effective conjunction of different elements of blues, R&B, jazz, and funk has had a widespread influence on what is generally considered today’s music. Eddie’s music has been sampled by countless artists including, but not limited to the following: Jamiroquai, Macy Gray, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Heavy D, etc. He has also had many works featured in highly popular films and television shows from Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” to A&E’s “Bates Motel” and HBO’s “Vinyl.” Eddie’s most popular tunes include: Exodus, Listen Here, Freedom Jazz Dance, Compared To What and Cold Duck Time.

POWERHOUSE NYC RECORDING ARTIST VALERIE GHENT
RELEASES NEW VIDEO “NEW YORK CITY STREETS”

Multi-Talented Singer Releases New Video Filmed in All Five Boroughs of The Big Apple
Invites Fans and Friends to Make Their Own ‘New York City Streets’ Video

(New York, NY) September 15, 2017 – NYC recording artist Valerie Ghent celebrates her newest video, New York City Streets, with a worldwide release today on youtube.com/valerieghent and a call for response videos made by anyone who loves New York City.

A love letter to her native city, the New York City Streets video was shot in all five boroughs of The Big Apple, in dozens of locations, many of personal significance to the enthusiastic and rockin’ NY singer/musician/composer. “New York is a beloved and iconic city for people around the globe”, Valerie says, “Whenever I travel people tell me how much they love NYC! So I’m inviting anyone who loves New York City to make your own video with the song, showcase your favorite parts of New York, and post it on YouTube. Show us your “New York City Streets!”

Voted #2 Best Song of 2016 by West Coast Music Radio, New York City Streets features rock solid performances by veteran New York musicians who have played on countless hits by world-class artists including Ashford & Simpson, Luther Vandross, Chic, Roberta Flack, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, David Byrne and many more. A free mp3 of the song is available from Valerie’s website, valerieghent.com, for anyone who wants to make their own version of a New York City Streets video.

Critics rave: “New York City Streets”, right out of the 70s/80s Luther meets Ashford & Simpson period with a driving piano lead and Alfa Anderson and Dennis Collins (together with Keith Fluitt) bringing back those inimitable Chic and Luther Vandross moments in the super-slick hook, supported by a cool horn section. A real gem!” – Gina Loves Jazz (Germany)

A Tribute To Les Paul:
Live From Universal Studios Hollywood

A live concert tribute to the “godfather of the electric guitar” Les Paul,
featuring the world’s best guitarists.

With a legendary career as a hit-making musician, solid-body electric guitar trailblazer, and an inventor of unprecedented recording techniques, he has impacted and influenced the many facets of the music industry like none other. Filmed live at what was then the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on February 8, 2006, A Tribute To Les Paul: Live From Universal Studios Hollywood gives viewers a front row seat for an unforgettable night of powerhouse performances, as some of music’s biggest names come together to honor the ultimate icon. The night is headlined by show-stopping numbers from an all-star slate of Paul disciples, that includes Slash and Edgar Winterteaming up on the Stevie Wonder staple “Superstition;” Toto axeman Steve Lukather‘s rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing;” and Joe Perry and Buddy Guy closing the night with a soulful blues set. Other highlights include spirited performances by Joe SatrianiKenny Wayne Shepherd, recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Neal Schon, and more.
As part of the night’s festivities, A Tribute To Les Paul: Live From Universal Studios Hollywood also features rare commentary taken from several of Paul’s final interviews recorded at New York’s landmark Iridium Jazz Club, as well as at Paul’s home in Mahwah, New Jersey. The special event was held to raise funds and awareness for the South Central charity A Place Called Home, designed to give at-risk youth a safe and secure environment they can thrive in.
The program is produced by Icon Television Music, Inc., HD Net (now AXSTV), and In Touch Entertainment and distributed by MVD Entertainment Group. The award-winning production team includes Charles Carlini (“Les Paul’s 90th Birthday Concert at Carnegie Hall”), Bob Cutarella (“Les Paul & Friends”), Howard Lipp (“Les Paul 90th Birthday Concert at Gibson Amphitheater”), and Glenn Aveni (“Les Paul Chasing Sound”).
Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of the Les Paul Foundation stated, “It is without a doubt that Les Paul is the ‘Father of Modern Music’ and that musicians from every corner of the globe and in every genre of the music industry stand upon his shoulders. He was an inventor, an award-winning musician, an innovator and most importantly a very special man I also had the privilege of calling my friend. The artists and producers who have made this tribute program possible give us every reason to remember that Les Paul was a man who influenced our music industry profoundly. I am thrilled that viewers everywhere will have the chance to witness his greatest through the performances and storytelling of this wonderful program.”

In 1998, Free Radicals’ first CD “The Rising Tide Sinks All” warned against the next Iraq War four years before it started. A decade later, Pakistan’s leading English newspaper, Dawn, called the CD “a premonition waiting to become true.” In 2012, Free Radicals’ fourth CD “The Freedom Fence” warned against border walls four years before Trump made them a cornerstone of his campaign for president.

Now on its 20th year, Free Radicals presents a new CD “Outside the Comfort Zone,” that warns against a white supremacist apartheid society in which consumers are oblivious to human rights abuses going on right outside the window.

Free Radicals is a horn-driven instrumental dance band with a commitment to peace and justice, and is the 13 time winner for “Best Jazz” in the Houston Press Music Awards. Equally comfortable performing in clubs, street protests, punk rock house-parties, art openings, weddings, funerals, and breakdance competitions, Free Radicals prides itself in adaption and supporting members of targeted communities for whom “apartheid” is not merely a metaphor.

On the new recording, Free Radicals welcomes many guests including Harry Sheppard & Damon Choice, two elder vibraphonists who played with Benny Goodman and Sun Ra Arkestra respectively, along with a dozen other long time collaborators.

“The horn-heavy, continually evolving collective Free Radicals produces a wildly eclectic fusion that has as many influences as there are items in the Houston, Texas, pawnshop in which they honed their sound during all-night jam sessions.” – The New Yorker

PledgeMusic Campaign For:
Pianist Lewis Porter

 “For Coltrane and Curtis”

A first, with Lewis Porter,
Terri Lyne
Carrington and John Patitucci together for a full album of acoustic jazz. Featuring Tia Fuller on two tracks.

This album will mark the first time that Carrington and Patitucci have a recorded a full album of straight ahead acoustic jazz together. They are old friends and have recorded tracks on a variety of albums, but nobody has ever heard the amazing work they can do on a program of straight ahead and standard tunes.  Celebrated saxofonist Tia Fuller will join the recording session with her contributions on two tracks.

Lewis Porter has performed on piano across the USA and Europe with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Gary Bartz, Wycliffe Gordon, Ravi Coltrane, Marc Ribot, and many others. Joe Lovano called his last album “a wonderful recording full of inspired trio excursions and beautiful solo explorations…Bravo !!!” Now he will be recording with his friend Terri Lyne Carrington, the amazing drummer who has won multiple Grammy awards, and the equally celebrated bassist John Patitucci.

The album will present original compositions by Porter including a dynamic Suite for Coltrane, as well as standards such as “Bye Bye Blackbird,” and the profound Curtis Mayfield tune “People Get Ready.”

ECLECTIC GUITARIST STEW CUTLER DELIVERS STUNNING SET
EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT

NYC based artist releasing first album since 2012 on September 15

For Immediate Release

New York, NY—New York City native Stew Cutler has never cared much for limiting his musical style. Whether as a master guitarist, producer, composer, or sideman playing with some of the greatest in the land, Cutler chooses to mix up jazz, soul, funk, and blues without care for any particular label.

On his sixth album, Every Sunday Night (September 15) Cutler continues in the vein of creating music utilizing that sense of freedom, taking a serendipitous route following an idea he’d had brewing in his mind for a while: namely, the documentation of a treasured weekly residency.

“I wanted to do a live recording in the place we play every Sunday — Arthur’s Tavern in New York’s Greenwich Village,” he explains. “However, since it became clear that it was going to be impossible to do it that way, I brought the band out to Queens and we basically played live. The overdubs and edits were kept to a minimum.”

The results proved to be bang-on in line with Cutler’s vision, providing a unique, immediate sound sure to resonate with fans of his live set. “We are kind of an ‘artsy bar band,’” he smiles. “And on this recording there is a ‘bar band’ aspect that I hope we take to another level.”

The contributions of musicians such as Bill McClellan, Julian Pollack, Nick Semrad, JT Bowen, and Bobby Harden are all prominently featured on the record, highlighting that particular magic that can only spring from a live performance. Also helping things along is the assistance of engineer Rich Gaglia, who also lent a hand in producing the collection. “His ears are amazing, I thinks he is kind of a genius,” raves Cutler.

Cutler’s long history of collaborative efforts is represented beautifully on Every Sunday Night in the form of several stellar songs he’d composed with fellow free-minded musicians. “There are a couple of gems, ‘Miss D ‘and ‘TV Preacher,’ that were written by some people who are no longer here,” he notes. “Exposing those songs to the world feels great. Those songs would have just been forgotten.”

The set also includes a selection of covers, which Cutler and his crew enjoyed taking on. “We got to put our own spin on some classic tunes, which is something that I haven’t done much of on my own recordings.”

Overall, Cutler hopes the new record will keep his legacy moving forward – and keep him on the move in general. A seasoned touring artist, one of his favorite things to do is travel the globe bringing his music to international festivals and venues. Cutler’s very first tour was at age 19 with blues artist ZZ Hill, and since then he’s shared the stage and collaborated with a staggeringly diverse list of artists including Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Meatloaf, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Lester Bowie, David Sanborn, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, the Harlem Gospel Singers, and many more.

His guitar prowess on stage has earned him considerable critical mentions in the press, as well as accolades from the Blues Hall of Fame and inclusion on a Grammy-nominated album (1995’s No Ways Tired from acclaimed soul vocalist Fontella Bass).

As a solo artist, Cutler’s reputation for a hybrid, personal style came to prominence with the success of his first three releases, Trio Music, Insignia, and So Many Streams, all of which showcased a masterful blend of melody and noise. He followed these up with a bona fide live album, Trio Live, and 2012’s jazz-oriented After Hours.

Soul Jazz: Jazz in the Black Community, 1945-1975

Record producer, jazz writer and broadcaster Bob Porter discusses his new book Soul Jazz: Jazz in the Black Community, 1945-1975, which complies a history of jazz in the back community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War.

Soul Jazz is a history of jazz and its reception in the black community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War. Previous histories reflect the perspective of an integrated America, yet the United States was a segregated country in 1945. The black audience had a very different take on the music and that is the perception explored in Soul Jazz.

Bob Porter is a record producer, writer and broadcaster in the fields of Jazz and Blues.  He has worked for such prominent record labels a Prestige, Savoy and Atlantic.  He has produced more than 175 albums and several hundred reissues.  He has contributed to DownBeat, JazzTimes, Jazz Journal (London) and currently writes a book review column for the Journal of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors.  He is a two-time Grammy winner, was awarded the Marion McPartland Award for Excellence in Jazz Broadcasting and is a member of the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.  He currently is the host of three separate radio programs on WBGO Newark.

PLEASE HELP SAVE OUR BLUES, ROOTS & JAZZ MUSICIANS
DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS

The Jazz Foundation brought over 1000 musicians & their families back after Katrina, by rehousing, donating top shelf instruments and creating paying gigs for hundreds.  They were there for hundreds affected by Superstorm Sandy, and rebuilt the homes of the musicians who lost everything in last year’s devastating floods in Baton Rouge.

They have started connecting with dozens of jazz, blues, and roots musicians in Harvey’s wake, they will help them rebuild as they always do, repairing homes, replacing belongings and treasured instruments and even replacing work.

Our success to save these musicians depends on you.

Your donation will provide miracles like basic necessities, clothing, bedding, instrument replacement, home cleaning and decontamination, rent/mortgage payments, car repairs, home reconstruction and financial support.

Texas brought us some the the greatest music that America has given to the world.

Help the Jazz Foundation and rebuild the life of someone whose music was there for you during your times of need.

Nancy Kelly’s Mark Murphy Tribute CD

Nancy Kelly’s 6th CD
Honoring Legendary Jazz Singer Mark Murphy

Watch The Video

As a young jazz singer, I was blessed to be supported by a well-run indie label that helped build my career and established my presence on the national and international jazz scene. Over the ensuing decades, I’ve seen the music industry mutate. Today the challenges of the digital age can put tremendous stress on the recording artist, but it has also brought new opportunities, such as crowdfunding. Although no longer a source of significant income, even for many established popular artists, the need for releasing new recordings is still essential for staying alive in the business. It’s important to document one’s artistry, and it’s a hook for getting booked and staying in the game. It heightens awareness, it generates work, and emotionally speaking, making recordings is what keeps artists alive, this ability to share their art of spontaneous creation and love.

Why Mark Murphy:

People often ask me who my favorite singer is, and my answer is always, without hesitating, Mark Murphy. I was heavily influenced by his work. He was “the real deal,” and he’s the reason I am a jazz singer. With Mark’s recent passing, I am moved to honor him musically with this recording. Mark and I were friends and we adored each other. I was very moved to learn recently that I was one of his favorite singers.

The CD:

I am collaborating with pianist John DiMartino on this project. He too is a huge Mark Murphy fan and we are very excited to see this endeavor take on its own life. You certainly won’t need to be a Mark fan to be moved by the music I’ve chosen for this recording. Mark’s music went through many changes as he grew and matured. I’m going to record the songs that most affected me as an artist. These compositions nourished me and gave birth to my jazz soul.

With your financial support, I will honor my mentor, the great Mark Murphy, and will continue to aspire to achieve his authentic artistry, helping to keep jazz vital, relevant and alive.

The recording date has been set for mid-October. We would like to see the CD released in early 2018.  John and I are rehearsing and developing the music. Once we get a feel for the vibe and direction of the music, we will then choose the players from the New York city jazz pool that will compliment the direction and sound.

A personal note from Nancy

Dear Friends,

In the past few years I have teamed up with an international booking agent, Jean-Pierre Leduc www.lunchedrecords.com. We met just after my last recording, “B That Way,” had run its course. So much is about timing in this business. As it happens, Jean-Pierre was Mark Murphy’s last manager, and we both continue to feel a very strong personal connection to him. We feel confident that this project will not only be a worthy addition to my discography, but will also create a demand for concerts worldwide.

Not only will your support honor the great Mark Murphy and his formidable legacy, it will also create awareness for my artistry, to continue my quest to keep creating great music for you, and for all that enjoy this great art form.

To quote one of Mark’s most fabulous albums, “Love Is What Stays.”

THIS WEEK:
Charlie Parker Jazz Festival
25th Anniversary

Presented by Capital One Bank

August 23 – August 27
Featuring Anat Cohen, Lee Konitz Quartet,
Joshua Redman Quartet
and more

in Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 16, 2017 — New York, NY — City Parks Foundation is proud to announce the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. The festival is New York City’s annual salute to the legendary late saxophonist, featuring storied veteran players as well as young jazz musicians who continue to shape and drive the art form. This year’s festival runs August 23 through August 27 at parks and venues around Manhattan and will include free concerts, artist discussions, a film screening, and for the first time in the festival’s history, a dedicated evening of dance.

“We are thrilled to celebrate 25 years of the beloved Charlie Parker Jazz Festival,” said Heather Lubov, Executive Director of City Parks Foundation. “In honor of this milestone we have expanded the program to 5 days, partnered with local institutions on family jazz events and open jam sessions, and are presenting a full evening of dance on the lineup for the first time. We hope all New Yorkers, young and old, jazz aficionados and new fans alike will join us in honoring the legacy of Charlie Parker and jazz in New York City.”

The festival kicks off on Wednesday, August 23 at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music with “Bird With Strings,” a tribute performance featuring an ensemble of students and veteran jazz players honoring Parker’s 1950 recording, Charlie Parker With Strings.

On Thursday, August 24, the festival heads uptown to Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem for Jason Samuels Smith’s Chasin’ The Bird Remixed, an added evening of programming in honor of the 25th Anniversary, and the first full evening of dance in the festival’s history. Emmy award-winning tap dance virtuoso, Jason Samuels Smith, and Broadway veterans, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Derick K. Grant, bring Parker’s music to life through dance in this special performance featuring live music.

The festival continues in Marcus Garvey Park on Friday, August 25 with world-renowned clarinet player & saxophonist Anat Cohen, who will lead a consortium of strings, horns, percussion, and keyboards with her jazz-folk troupe, and Camille Thurman, a multi-talented saxophonist, flutist and vocalist.

On Saturday afternoon, veteran alto-saxophonist player Lee Konitz, a contemporary of Charlie Parker when bebop came on the scene, will perform with his quartet in Marcus Garvey Park joined by drumming prodigy and pioneering female percussionist Terri Lyne Carrington, one of the most recorded jazz drummers of all time Louis Hayes (who has played with the likes of John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Cannonball Adderley), and rising vocalist Charenee Wade, a brave new voice on the modern jazz frontier intent on using her gift to address social change.

On Sunday, August 27, the festival travels back downtown to the place where it all began, Tompkins Square Park, home to the inaugural Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in 1993, and located just blocks away from Charlie Parker’s home in the East Village. Joshua Redman, one of the most important contemporary horn players and widely considered to be the top sax man of his generation, will make his Charlie Parker Jazz Festival debut. NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson, revered by many as one the greatest alto saxophonists of all time; saxophone virtuosa Tia Fuller, one of the world’s best jazz multi-instrumentalists, full-time professor and one-time member of the all-female band that toured with Beyoncé; and vocalist Alicia Olatuja, who performed with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Obama’s second inauguration and has been in high demand ever since, will also perform to close out the final day of the festival.

In honor of the 25th Anniversary, City Parks Foundation has also partnered with local institutions to present free and open-to-the-public jazz events around the city. Events include an all ages Family Jazz Party with Festival performer Charenee Wade and a “Harlem Speaks” interview with Lee Konitz at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, a screening at The New School of the 2016 film, I Called Him Morgan, about the life and tragic death of jazz musician Lee Morgan, live jazz in the gardens at The Harlem Rose Garden and 6BC Botanical Garden, and jam sessions at Silvana and Ginny’s Supper Club.

Anat Cohen
There are very few connoisseurs of the clarinet in this world, and Anat Cohen surely reigns supreme amongst these select woodwindists. With a wonderful outpouring of vigorously harmonious tunes, the Tel-Aviv born Cohen leads her gifted team of ten on a jazzy voyage through multiple forms (with tinges of Brazilian, Eastern European, New York and New Orleans traditions). Her band’s blend of jazz and folk truly melds musical rituals from all over the world. Unanimously proclaimed as clarinet queen (the New York Times unequivocally states that she is a “Master”), top Jazz critics and publications rave about her sound. “With the clarinet she becomes a singer, a dancer, a poet, a mad scientist, laughing — musically — with the sheer delight of reaching that new place, that new feeling, with each chorus,” according to JazzTimes. Time and again, she is awarded the “Clarinetist of the Year” distinction from DownBeat, JazzTimes and the Jazz Journalists Association. With six solo albums so far, and eight collaborative records, Cohen simply loves to create and play. And one more thing, she’s also an expert saxophonist.

Lee Konitz Quartet / Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science / Louis Hayes / Charenee Wade
Marcus Garvey Park, MN
3:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Lee Konitz Quartet
The Lee Konitz Quartet is comprised of four of the most skillful jazz veterans working today. Under the leadership of Lee Konitz, the group has been thrilling audiences for quite a long time. Konitz, a premiere alto saxophonist, started out in Chicago, where he put a lot of hours into learning his craft. His early work saw him playing with Claude Thornhill Orchestra (arranged by Gil Evans), Stan Kenton’s Orchestra, pianist Lennie Tristano, and the Miles Davis Capitol Orchestra. He would then break out on his own, amassing a staggering list of essential jazz credentials. Adding a touch of international flare to the group is Dan Tepfer, their Paris-born pianist/composer. An improviser at heart, this talented musician has tickled the ivories alongside jazz behemoths of all natures, and has released several hit solo albums. With a keen interest in astrophysics, Tepfer has utilized his computer-science knowledge in conjunction with improvisational techniques to formulate a revolutionary jazz-centric algorithm. The Lee Konitz Quartet’s bassist is Jeremy Stratton, a local jazz hero from New York, who has played over the decades with a multitude of famed ensembles. Rounding out this colossal crew is George Schuller on drums. Schuller is well known in the jazz milieu, with numerous side bands under his belt, including the hit big band from the ‘80s, Orange Than Blue.

Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science
For Terri Lyne Carrington, it’s not just about sounding sweet. Along with her band Social Science, the princess of percussion has been melding her uncannily sophisticated drumming and composing abilities with impactful, relevant statements on the pressing social issues of today. With a lush composition of jazz, indie rock, contemporary classical and R&B, all reconfigured under the sweeping swath of freeform improvisation, Carrington is not afraid to mix things up. A revered mainstay in the business, she has a four-decade long career and three Grammy wins to her credit, but is not even remotely content to just coast on by. An activist, educator and warrior for freedom and racial & sex equality, Carrington is nothing shy of remarkable. She began in music as an undeniable drumming prodigy, receiving accolades from People magazine, EBONY and Modern Drummer, at just ten years of age. With oodles of television performances and alliances with humongous names in music, she has wowed audiences all over the world. With eight full length albums out, Carrington perennially brings her passion to the studio as well. Her latest release is a can’t-miss collaboration with a star-studded cadre of top female artists, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL.

Louis Hayes
Born in Motown, Louis Sedell Hayes came up virtually ensconced in authentic Detroit music stylings. At a young age he discovered the piano, but when his father presented him with a set of drums, his true passion was ignited. Coming up in 1950’s Detroit, surrounded by jazz giants Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell and Doug Watkins (to name a few), Hayes was mentored by the legendary Papa Joe Jones. At only eighteen years old, he moved to NYC and joined the Horace Silver Quintet, skyrocketing him into the critical public eye, with his full drumming talents on display. In the 60’s Hayes became a part of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, further cementing his name into the catalogue of storied jazz percussionists. He would later be asked to play alongside star piano man Oscar Peterson, in a group where Hayes and bassist Sam Jones would become known as the “dynamic duo” of rhythm. As Hayes’ career progressed, he would lead several incarnations of bands under his own name, playing with jazz greats Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Barron, Junior Cooke, Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon and eventually McCoy Tyner. His shows still explode with energy, as Hayes bangs away with perfect precision.

Charenee Wade
The wonderfully outspoken Charenee Wade is a brave new voice on the modern jazz frontier, intent on using her art form to exact social change. This exquisite improvisational jazz vocalist, composer and arranger is just getting started, too. Her numerous accolades include being named the First Runner-Up in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition and being invited to perform her original songs with Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her debut album Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson is a stirring tribute to socially-conscious musician/poet Scott-Heron, which also forecasts Wade’s own desire to rise up against the many forms of injustice still plaguing the world of today. Notable tracks include “Song of the Wind,” a heartfelt appreciation of the peace-seeking efforts of her mentors, “A Toast to the People,” a nuanced example of Wade’s deftness at storytelling through vocal dexterity, and “Home Is Where the Hatred Is,” a rousingly powerful jazz number where her dynamic talents are on full display. In addition to providing the gift of her voice to the world, Charenee passes along her love of music as a professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, City College.

Sunday, August 27
Joshua Redman Quartet / Lou Donaldson / Tia Fuller / Alicia Olatuja
Tompkins Square Park, MN
3:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Joshua Redman
“Unparalleled among horn players today,” is the way JazzTimes (and a host of other noteworthy publications and critics, in so many words) describe longtime jazz legend Joshua Redman. Often referred to as one of the top sax men of his generation, Redman has worked with some of the most treasured jazz artists of all time, counting McCoy Tyner, Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus, and Brooklyn Rider. While he has the ability to seamlessly blend into an ensemble and flawlessly synergize with the group, he can just as easily break out into a solo that drops the jaws of jazz fans of all ages. While his globally-successful recorded albums are a delight, many posit that his live shows are simply the stuff of legend. Aside from his stellar saxophone majesty, Redman is a stupendous composer and bandleader. With longstanding friends and collaborators at his side (Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, and Gregory Hutchinson), Redman leads The Joshua Redman Quartet to unprecedented heights of musical innovation. With stylistic motifs that date back to the ‘50s, the Joshua Redman Quartet is still a cutting-edge, thoroughly modern enterprise in jazz celebration.

Lou Donaldson
When someone mentions the greatest alto saxophonists of all time, only one name truly stands out: that of “Sweet Poppa Lou” Donaldson. With origins as the bandleader of Blue Note Records in the 1950s, Donaldson had already established himself as a new voice in jazz at only 25 years of age. As he directed many albums at this time, Sweet Poppa Lou was proud to collaborate with the biggest jazz instrumentalists of the day. With numerous recordings in the bag, Donaldson broke out with 1967’s Alligator Bogaloo, a revolution in the form, as he boisterously showcased his virtuoso status. His long and storied career has garnered him too many achievements to list; but his induction into the International Jazz Hall of Fame and the his naming as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master (the absolute zenith of awards in the jazz realm) can not be left unmentioned. His bluesy, unmatched style is still on full display, as he dazzles and amazes crowds with his nimble fingers and crystal clear sound.

Tia Fuller
Tia Fuller is a saxophone virtuosa, a touring artist and full-time professor (at the Berklee School of Music). Having been featured on the cover Saxophone Today, Jazz Education Journal, and JazzTimes Magazine, she is a one of the world’s best jazz multi-instrumentalists. Tia was selected to be a member of the all-female band touring with Beyoncé, as part of the I AM..Sasha Fierce and Beyoncé Experience World Tour promoting the superstar’s CD’s, where Tia has played in various venues throughout the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. She is a featured soloist on the Beyoncé Experience DVD (Me, Myself and I), I AM Yours I DVD (Wynn Theatre) and also appeared on number of major television shows, such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, Today Show, Good Morning America, BET Awards, American Music Awards and Total Request Live, and the 2010 Grammy Awards. She has also performed as the featured soloist with Beyoncé for President Obama at the White House. Tia has recorded four albums with her quartet. The first was 2005’s Pillar of Strength, followed by 2007’s Healing Space, an offering of “melodic medicine.” Her third album, 2010’s Decisive Steps, took the #1 JazzWeek rating for two weeks straight, and nominated for their Best Jazz album. In 2012, she released her 4th album, Angelic Warrior, which received praise from Wall Street Journal, New York Times and numerous jazz publications. Tia’s quartet has performed all over the world at many prestigious venues and she’s received numerous awards, winning Downbeat Critic’s Poll-‘Rising Star’ two years in a row for Soprano Sax (2014), Alto Sax and Flute (2013). Between balancing her teaching and tour life, Tia feels that she is fulfilling her purpose here on this earth, that is to “serve as a light for others.”

Alicia Olatuja
Ever since Alicia Olatuja took center stage at President Obama’s 2nd inauguration, as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, this luminous songstress has been in exceedingly high demand. It wasn’t long before she put together her very own backing jazz ensemble and released 2014’s aptly named Timeless, a testimony to her ageless voice. Reared in St. Louis, with the echoes of venerated blues and jazz artists past coursing through her veins, Olatuja emigrated to New York to complete her Master’s degree in Classical Voice & Opera at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. Migrating from strictly opera and musical theater performance, she began feeling her gospel and soul roots, as she shared the stage with legends Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans and Christian McBride. Shortly thereafter, famed composer Billy Childs tapped Olatuja (praised by the New York Times for her “luscious tone”) for a nationwide tour of original works honoring Laura Nyro. Performing with her own band at virtually every jazz festival under the sun, this velvet voiced woman, with soul to spare, has only just begun to shine.

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

McCLENTY HUNTER-drums

The notion of moving forward by triangulating a space between creative and pragmatic imperatives is a consistent thread throughout Dave Stryker’s four decades in the jazz business, not least on Strykin’ Ahead, his 28th CD as a leader. Stryker augments his working trio of Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums with vibraphone player Steve Nelson, all on-board for a second go-round after their stellar contri- butions to last year’s Eight-Track II. Like the leader, Nelson is a preternaturally flexible and in-the-moment improviser with deep roots in the tradition who knows how to push the envelope without damaging the contents. Stryker internalized those imperatives on a 1984-1986 run with Brother Jack McDuff, and he received further invaluable training in the art of musical communication during a decade on the road with Stanley Turrentine, to whom he paid homage on the 2015 release Don’t Mess With Mister T.

In contrast to his Eight Track II conception of putting his spin on pop hits of his formative years, Stryker returns to his long-standing practice of presenting originals and reharmonized standards from the jazz and show music songbooks. “Shadowboxing” is a burning 14-bar minor blues; his well-considered chordal variations on Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints” proceed to a simmering 5/4 figure. Next is “New You” (a stimulating Stryker contrafact of the oft-played “There Will Never Be Another You”). He personalizes Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” set to Hunter’s insinuating bossa-funk groove. The title track “Strykin’ Ahead” has a Cadillac-racing-down-the-freeway-feel; he imbues the lovely melody of “Who Can I Turn To” with the full measure of his plush, inviting tone.

That Stryker knows his Albert King is evident on the slow-drag “Blues Down Deep,” which evokes wee-hours third sets in the inner city grills and lounges of Stryker’s apprentice years. He knows his bebop, too. On Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring,” the solo flights over Stryker’s “modernized” progressions transpire over Hunter’s drum-bass beats and crisp, medium-up four-on-the cymbal; on the chopbusting “Donna Lee,” all members springboard off a churchy vamp and Hunter’s funk-infused swing.

“I’ve always wanted to write vehicles that are fun and interesting to blow over,” Stryker says. “Trying to come up with a beautiful melody that lasts is very fulfilling. Writing is a big part of my voice in this music.” Stryker is too modest to say that his voice is also a big part of jazz, to which he’s devoted a career marked by consistent application of the values that he espouses. But that’s all right—I’ll say it for him.

WDR Big Band feat. Garry Dial & Dick Oatts Ellington Unheard – Part 1

It’s no secret that jazz composers have been profoundly influenced by classical composers and vice versa. Duke’s version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite is a fine example. Duke embraced the classical composer’s music with love and respect but transformed it in his own beautifully sincere way – the way it worked most naturally for his band and himself. Miles Davis and Gil Evans fell in love with Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez which became part of their project Sketches of Spain.

Rediscovered Ellington is presented in the same respectful manner. To continue Ellington’s legacy, we resurrected these compositions with our perspective through personalized arrangements. Although a few of them suggest a “tip of the hat” to Duke’s sound, most of these renditions showcase how quality music may be transformed into something new and refreshing while respecting the original essence of its composer. We hope you enjoy these compositions in this context.

Garry Dial, Dick Oatts, and Rich DeRosa.

In 1979, my mother, Ruth Ellington, and I wanted to record and archive all of the Tempo Music catalogue. This included compositions by my uncle, Duke Ellington, and many of his musical associates. We hired Garry Dial to do this job. I am thrilled, that after 38 years, Garry has revisited the more obscure tunes of Duke Ellington. Rediscovered Ellington will bring this beautiful, rarely heard music to the public eye. Garry Dial, Dick Oatts and Rich DeRosa, along with the WDR Big Band, have managed to capture the essence of Ellington. I am proud of their swinging contribution and I know my mother and uncle would be smiling.

Stephen James
Nephew of Duke Ellington

Here’s the story of how a poodle named Bravo inadvertently became responsible for this collection of rarely heard gems by the great Duke Ellington.
In the late 1970’s I had the honor of working with Duke Ellington’s sister Ruth and her son Stephen James. They hired me to record in alphabetical order the entire Tempo Music catalogue of Duke’s music and his associates for their family archive. Entering Ruth’s apartment was quite an experience. There stood Duke’s famous white piano with his original painting of Satin Doll hanging on the wall. I was speechless and somewhat daunted. Ruth and Stephen were most gracious and warm to me, putting me at ease.

They described the job and when I saw how incredibly prolific Duke had been, I said, “You probably need ten pianists to complete this project!” I suggested Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Barron and Dick Hyman among others. “Do you want this job or not?” said Ruth. I gulped and said, “Yessssssss!”

I went to Ruth’s apartment for about three months, five days a week. The music was in various forms: a sketch, a score, and even a published lead sheet. I was a kid in a candy store. As I played through the tunes, Stephen and his brother Michael would stop over and give me the eye if I wasn’t getting the feel right. A wink meant I nailed it. In this way their wisdom guided me.

When it was time to record, the little poodle Bravo began singing along. It became evident he was not to be silenced. Therefore I suggested to Ruth that I should copy the pages, take them to my apartment and record them there without the barking. That’s why 38 years later I am in the unique position of having these scores of Duke’s music in my filing cabinets.

Rich DeRosa, Dick Oatts and I have collaborated on many projects together over the years. In 2015, Rich was chief conductor and arranger for the WDR Big Band. He contacted me about doing a Dial & Oatts project with the band. I thought of the trove of Duke Ellington treasures I had on file. Why not resurrect these rare, obscure tunes and present them for a new audience as well as diehard Ellington fans?

We selected nine tunes and got to work arranging them in our own style for the big band. We traveled to Cologne, Germany, where we performed the arrangements with the band at the Philharmonic halls in Cologne and Essen. During the day we recorded this CD in the studio. What a thrill to play our versions of Duke’s tunes with these great musicians!

It’s always an honor to work with my musical brothers, Dick Oatts and Rich DeRosa. Both Dick and Richie’s fathers were great musicians in the era of Ellington. Oatts’ dad, Jack, played alto in the style of Johnny Hodges. Richie’s dad, Clem, was a drummer and arranger who led many famous bands including the Glen Miller Big Band. These dads would be so proud of their sons and this project!

A few months after we made the recording, I ran into Duke’s granddaughter Mercedes at an event. I told her about our “Rediscovered Ellington” project and she gave us her blessing. Thank you, Mercedes!

I called Stephen, now president of Tempo Music, to tell him about the work. It was like old home week. We reminisced about the days I came to the apartment to help archive Duke’s music. I thank him for his support, love of life and belief in our project. Much appreciated, Stephen. Bravo!

Garry Dial

During the summer of 1961, my father took my brother Jim and me to a joint concert of Duke Ellington and Count Basie at the Des Moines Art Center. My father was a musician and huge fan of both bands. They were all legends in the Oatts house and, at 8 years old, my dream was to get an autograph of Duke and Johnny Hodges. During the short break, I had my pad and pencil ready for anyone in a tuxedo to sign their name. I was very shy but went up to two gentlemen who were standing together near the outside bar. I waited until they were done with their conversation and they saw me standing there wide-eyed.

They asked if they could help me so I asked for their autographs. They were extremely patient and nice and when they gave them back, I was shocked to read the names Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. All I could stutter was a “thank you”. Then my father came over to translate my surprise and ultimate gratitude. To this day, it was probably the most inspiring musical memory from my childhood.

As I watched all those great musicians get on the bus after the concert, my dream to play great music as a career began. Mom threw out our baseball cards twenty years later and the autographs probably went with them….

Dick Oatts

Duke Ellington showed jazz composers and arrangers the concept of writing not only for instruments but, more importantly, for the people who would play them. In my role as arranger/orchestrator for the WDR Big Band, Duke’s model has been a great influence for me. My choices of soloists, written and improvised, were always made for specific members of the band. Consequently, the unique personality of each player is naturally connected to the context of each arrangement.

Rich DeRosa

Rediscovered Ellington is a rarity that comes along once every few decades, a trove of mostly unheard music by a music legend fashioned into a glimmering yet meditative production. The great Duke Ellington, for whom this album is a tribute, once observed that “there are two kinds of music”, the kind that connects to the audience with sincerity and the kind that doesn’t. Judging by the response of listeners worldwide, Ellington’s music is of the first kind: beautiful, cultivated, resonant, and timeless.

But for there to be any audience connection at all, the music must first be heard. And that’s what is special about this stunner. Maestros in their own right, Garry Dial, Dick Oatts, and Rich DeRosa, unearthed these compositions from obscurity. They turned musical amnesia into memorable and vivid works that bring Ellington’s life and music into sharper focus not only for the seasoned Ellington diaspora but those new to his sizable repertoire. Dial, Oatts, and DeRosa shaped these compositions with colorful and immaculate arrangements, rendering Ellington afresh and anew.

Prior to this recording, few of these works had a brief public life. Most were unknown to the general public. While a few of the arrangements suggest an homage to Ellington’s sound, most of the works showcase how music may be given new and refreshing life while respecting the composer’s essence.

The album opens with Hey Baby, a mid-tempo swing number recorded in 1946 and released on RCA Victor. It’s also a well-known tune from Blue Rose, the 1956 Rosemary Clooney album. It brings the virtuosity of soloists Oatts (soprano sax), Paul Heller (tenor sax), Dial (piano) and Johan Hörlen (alto sax) to the forefront, and showcases the big band’s mighty brass section in multicolored shout sections. Let The Zoomers Drool, an Ellington/Johnny Hodges tune, was originally released as a live album in 1945 on the Jazz Society label. It opens with a ruminating stride piano riff, enveloped by a slower swing feel, rich with a bluesy call-and-response between the piano and ensemble.

I Like Singing is a gorgeous ballad from Saturday Laughter, a musical Ellington wrote with the still-living lyricist Herbert Martin – and it draws upon Ellington’s classical influence: opening without drums, the sections take on an orchestral quality that features reedy doubles and a plush piano solo by Dial. The drums and bass enter, and the tune transforms into an engaging yet pensive ballad.

Just A Gentle Word From You Will Do is vintage Ellington with a straight-ahead melody recast across the horn and reed sections. This work was composed mostly by Onzy Matthews, a pianist and arranger who worked with Ellington in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was undoubtedly performed live, but there is no previously-known recording. And to wit, this is some debut rendition, with Oatts on flute and Ludwig Nuss on trombone!

Introspection has no known recording, and is anything but introspective. The up-tempo swing sets up the WDR to showcase its legendary tightness of sound and precision of phrases. Similarly, Kiki also has no known recording. On this track, the big band is fully portrayed with a full, plush, even lavish aesthetic, which makes this album required listening for those looking to learn or merely just enjoy the craft of large jazz ensemble performance. For example, the trumpet section commands the lead line with alacrity, and John Marshall’s blazing trumpet solo stands out with achingly beautiful timbre.

Love Came was recorded in 1965 and released on the Red Baron label. The melancholy and longing melodic line is presented by trumpeter Andy Haderer, and the tune opens into a jazz ballad, allowing for one of the quieter and more introspective spaces on the album.

The penultimate tune of this album, KCOR (rock spelled backward), is thought to have been written late in Ellington’s life. But very little information exists on its origins: this long-form piece diverges so sharply in style from Ellington’s body of work that it probably did not receive much attention through his life.

The final track, I Must Be Mad, was written by Ellington and Patricia Petremont. She was a lyricist for several of Ellington’s more obscure works such as My Lonely Love, When You’ve Had It All, and This Is Where I Get Off – all from the late 1960s. The searching ballad begins with an alto sax and piano duet that illustrates the uncanny parallel relationship that Dial and Oatts have to Ellington and Hodges. Both Dial and Ellington have a way of orchestrating at the piano that enhances a melody. Although Oatts’ sound is different from Hodges’, both embrace a melody with warmth and soulfulness. Here it is Dial and Oatts who give the album a loving, thoughtful send-off.

Rediscovered Ellington is a through-and-through treasure, and music lovers should reserve their deepest gratitude for Dial, Oatts, DeRosa, and the WDR Big Band who have given the world the album of the year whose musical genesis spans many decades.

“The gorgeous piano trio heard here has been together since they formed in 1996 at the University of Southern California’s music school. Even in a world of younger jazz pianists that includes the great Brad Mehldau, Reitan would clearly now be a standout. And his trio with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba is unusually fine, especially when you consider the truly exalted taste with which the whole disc was programmed…Reitan is a pianist who can, when necessary, gobble up the keyboard at racehorse tempo, but he is, at heart, a lyric player writing tender waltzes like “Spring” and playing some of the most heart-rending music in the jazz pianist’s repertoire (“I Loves You Porgy”) as well as some that is among the artfully adaptable uptempo “standards” in any band book (“Stella By Starlight.”) A delicious jazz piano trio.”

– Jeff Simon –The Buffalo News, NY

“Defining Reitan’s piano style isn’t easy because he’s not easily boxed in. That said, he’s most at home with light-touch, fleet-fingered runs on the uptempo numbers (Keith Jarrett’s “The Mourning of a Star,” Chick Corea’s “Windows”) and broad, elegiac statements on the ballads (Horace Silver’s “Lonely Woman,” Reitan’s own “Solitude”)…The Reitan-penned title track, intro’d by the pianist alone, graceful and sure, is transformed midway through into a frolicsome and gregarious chase scene. Greg Reitan, it would certainly appear by now, is firmly committed both to honoring the piano trio tradition and ensuring that it doesn’t get stuck in a rut.”

– Jeff Tamarkin — JazzTimes Magazine

“Los Angeles-based pianist/composer Greg Reitan’s Some Other Time (Sunnyside Records) vied for the honors of “Debut of the Year” in 2009. Using his same trio—with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba—Reitan followed up that auspicious start with two more outstanding sets, Antibes (2010) and Daybreak (2011), both for the Sunnyside label.  With this same trio—they have been together since 1996—he has honed an elegant and polished sound…the light touch, subtle dynamics, translucent harmonic beauty. Post No Bills builds on that approach, with a bit more of an edge this time around…”

in Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park

Events include an all ages Family Jazz Party with Festival performer Charenee Wade and a “Harlem Speaks” interview with Lee Konitz at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, a screening at The New School of the 2016 film, I Called Him Morgan, about the life and tragic death of jazz musician Lee Morgan, live jazz in the gardens at The Harlem Rose Garden and 6BC Botanical Garden, and jam sessions at Gin Fizz Harlem and Ginny’s Supper Club.

Saturday, Sept. 16th at 7:30pm: The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with special guests, the Gerald Clayton Trio will premiere the 2017 MJF Commission, John Clayton’s “Stories of a Groove: Conception, Evolution, Celebration.”

Born in Tel Aviv, Tamir Hendelman began keyboard studies at age 6, moving to the U.S. in 1984 and winning Yamaha’s national keyboard competition two years later.  Concerts in Japan and the Kennedy Center followed.  Drawn to the impressionistic and jazz harmonies of composers such as Ravel and Bill Evans, he studied at the Tanglewood Institute and received a B.M. in Music Composition from Eastman School of Music in 1993.  Soon after, he formed his own trio, featuring original compositions, bebop, blues and Brazilian music.    Since 2000 he has toured the US, Japan and Europe with his trio and as a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

In 2001 he premiered Clayton’s orchestration of Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.  Peterson wrote in his online journal: “It was a satisfying but strange feeling… to hear a new young voice make some exhilarating and thoughtful solos in the spaces that I used to occupy in those pieces…I look forward to hearing more from him.”

Tamir Hendelman has released two recordings as a leader of his trio:  Playground (Swing Bros, 2008) and Destinations (Resonance 2010). Reaching #1 on the jazz charts, Destinations takes listeners along on a voyage of musical discovery.  The music ranges from originals to Jobim, Keith Jarrett and Maurice Ravel.  “Destinations to me is not only about the places I have traveled to, but also about the journey of being a jazz musician.”

He has also become a first-rate arranger and accompanist for some of today’s premier vocalists, such as Natalie Cole, Roberta Gambarini, and Jackie Ryan. He has accompanied Barbra Streisand in her return to jazz on Love Is The Answer (Columbia, 2009), at the Village Vanguard as well as on her 2012 North American orchestral tour.

Since 2005, Tamir Hendelman has been on the jazz faculty of UCLA and has conducted numerous workshops in universities and music programs in the US and abroad. He has also recently arranged and recorded for artists such as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, accordionist Richard Galliano and violinist Christian Howes.  In 2014, he performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue with the Winston-Salem Symphony.

“There are many fine pianists with impressive technique and swing who are convincing in a number of styles and play with real feeling. What increasingly distinguishes Hendelman is his gift for imaginative arranging…. He will compose an introduction that makes it difficult to predict what follows, but seems perfectly suited—even organic—once the tune begins.”   (www.allaboutjazz.com)

For Your Grammy Consideration
New Americana CD From Pascal Bokar
Afro Blue Grazz “American Shores”

Watch
Pascal Bokar AFRO BLUE GRAZZ “SO LONG”

 American Shores (Savanna Jazz Records)

Throughout his productive musical career, guitarist/vocalist Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam has always understood the connections between West African music and the sounds of the American South. His landmark book Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta discusses the music of the three empires that dominated the culture of West Africa starting in the 6th century, tracing the music from its role in the culture and daily life of Africa to its eventual emergence in the United States. In his teachings, lectures and music (where he displays his own individual voice), Pascal has consistently paid tribute to his ancestors. “As a musician, I have always tried to synthesize the convergence of African esthetics and appreciate their influence in the music of the African American communities of the American South, from the rural sounds of the Blues and Gospel into this music we call Jazz.”

Pascal Bokar’s American Shores, in the “AfroBlueGrazz” style coined by the album’s producer Greg Landau, is an ambitious fusion of textures and styles that comes from Bokar’s unique cultural perspective. As an accomplished jazz guitarist and scholar of African music and jazz he consistently heard clear examples of African musical concepts and instruments throughout his musical explorations. In this project he brought together accomplished musicians from Appalachia’s bluegrass style with Senegalese master drummers, African-American Rhythm and Blues singers, funky keyboards, and the stomp/clap percussion of a gospel choir. This eclectic cross cultural mix brings together long lost musical relatives as a platform for Pascal’s rich guitar and vocal improvisation.

Pascal Bokar previous recording Guitar Balafonics was selected by Downbeat Magazine as one of the “Best CDs of 2015.” Pascal Bokar is listed in Jazz journalist Scott Yanov’s Book entitled Great Jazz Guitars. Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam is also the owner of the Award Winning Savanna Jazz Club of San Carlos, CA, and is recipient of the Jim Hall Jazz Master Award from Berklee College of Music.  Notable musicians on this record: fiddler Blaine Sprouse (Bill Monroe), bassist Tony Saunders (Eric Clapton & David Crosby), Gospel Hawkins Family, and keyboardist Steve Carter (George Benson & Bobby Womack).

Nancy Kelly’s Mark Murphy Tribute CD

Nancy Kelly’s 6th CD
Honoring Legendary Jazz Singer Mark Murphy

JOE THOMAS
Jazz Legend, Icon, The Ebony Godfather, passes away at age 84 on July 26, 2017

The musical career of The Incomparable Joe Thomas spans over seven decades. During that time, he performed throughout the world, gaining notoriety, acclaim and adoration internationally.

Joseph Samuel Thomas was born to Frank Thomas and Sarah Pryor Thomas on May 31, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey. Born with extraordinary musical talents, Joe was blessed by God with the gifts of the spoken and written word.

After witnessing his older brother Frank play musical instruments, Joe realized one of his many callings in life. He learned how to play alto and soprano saxophone, trombone, flute and piano organically, by eye and by ear. He taught himself how to write music. At fifteen, with his older brother’s guidance, he began to play professionally in small local clubs. He met the fabulous James Moody, who was playing with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. Moody told Joe to pursue his craft and Joe did just that, going on to play with some of the world’s most iconic jazz legends.

A three-year stint in the United States Army interrupted his career. Wounded in combat in the Korean War, Joe was awarded the Purple Heart in honor of his service to this country. Returning to his purpose and passion in the United States, Joe helped form a group called “The Rhoda Scott Trio.” Along with Rhoda and Joe, drummer Bill Elliott was featured in that group. The group stayed together for three years, making two albums together.

Joe then formed his own group and made nine albums. He was featured on the flute and saxophone. He appears on several other albums including some of Jimmy McGriff’s. Two of his albums have been re- issued as CD’s: “Plato’s Retreat” and “Masada.” His entire catalog of exemplary work will be released for the Joe Thomas Legacy.

To many musicians and artists, Joe was affectionately known as “The Ebony Godfather.”

Joe performed at venues all over the world, including the prestigious Blue Note, Birdland, The Key Club, Carlos One, The Cave, Count Basie’s, La Détente, Smalls Paradise, and multiple cruise lines. Joe was one of the “All-Stars” invited to play at the Pythodd Club in Rochester, New Yorkand at Pine Grill Buffalo, New York reunions. Other notables who performed at these jazz festivals were: Charles Erland, Hank Crawford, Jimmy McGriff, Nat Adderly, Houston Person, Etta Jones, and many others. Joe performed with the legendary Carrie Smith, blues and gospel singer on three jazz festival cruises.

4-1/2 Stars “What if Wayne Shorter had been born in Rio? That’s the question that Antonio Adolfo poses–and answers–in most satisfying fashion on Hybrido–From Rio To Wayne Shorter.” – DownBeat, July 2017

For the esteemed Brazilian composer/arranger/pianist Antonio Adolfo, his life’s work has been to bring to the world the diverse richness of the Brazilian musical traditions – with a particular focus upon its parallel developments with the profound legacy of jazz. But of equal importance is making great music, to which his many highly acclaimed and Latin Grammy-nominated albums clearly testify. For his latest delightful excursion, the incomparable Wayne Shorter provides the essence of his focus with HYBRIDO, subtitled From Rio to Wayne Shorter.
“Mr. Wayne Shorter is one of my musical idols, both as instrumentalist and composer. His compositions have very rich harmonies and melodies, and in my opinion, they can fit very well with the Brazilian style.”

This wonderful album clearly supports that opinion.  In his masterful hands, eight iconic Wayne Shorter compositions – along with one outstanding and fully compatible Adolfo original – are brilliantly re-imagined, while remaining utterly respectful and confluent with the composers intent. Shorter’s richly lyrical and compelling compositions are ripe for interpretation and sophisticated in both harmony and rhythm to allow for adventurous exploration while holding to their essential musicality. They also provide the ideal springboard for Antonio’s multi-cultural approach to creativity, further clarifying the album’s title. “I love this hybridism of cultural and music styles, since new ideas and possibilities come from it.”

As with so many of the finest ensemble-focused artists – musicians, choreographers, filmmakers alike – a consistency of collaborators is so often a key ingredient of artistic achievement. Of his nine musicians here, only two are new to his circle – the excellent electric guitarist Lula Galvao and the fine vocalist Ze Renato (who performs on only one track). The core four, who bring their superb talents to all nine pieces, are Marcelo Martins on tenor/soprano sax and flute, double bassist Jorge Helder, Rafael Barata on drums & percussion, and Galvao. Andre Siqueira adds his percussion wizardry to five tracks, and the acoustic guitar of the masterful Claudio Spiewak graces one. Trumpeter Jessé Sadoc and trombonist Serginho Trombone round out the horn section into a powerful threesome on five tracks, with Adolfo’s marvelous arrangements making it sound even more sumptuous.

The consummate musicianship that one has come to expect from Antonio’s ensembles is in full bloom here as well. Sadoc’s hard-bop fluency clearly evokes the Lee Morgan/Freddie Hubbard accompaniment that Wayne called upon, and Serginho augments his raw roots-of-jazz-trombone sound with the fluidity of Curtis Fuller, while Martins muscular tenor and sinuously lyrical soprano stylings are ideal for this homage.  Galvao’s flawless buoyancy and imaginative solos sparkle, and Helder’s bass is always vitally rhythmic and deeply wooded in providing the heartbeat. Barata’s splendid creativity and ingenious subtlety is always in play as he consistently probes, colors, emphasizes and drives the music at all times. The seamless synchronicity he shares with Siqueira  is spectacular. And Antonio of course, continues to be a revelation of piano artistry while providing the substance that always ties all the music together within his own singular vision through his marvelous arrangements, spirited embellishment and energetically lyrical, inspired solos.

The compositions chosen by Adolfo are predominantly from the 1960s, with two notable and quite fitting exceptions – both coming from Shorter’s 1974 collaboration with the legendary Brazilian composer, musician and singer Milton Nascimento – and both truly beautiful compositions. For Beauty and the Beast Antonio employs what he calls a SamBossa, with a shifted groove during the exposition of the melodic line. Martins plays soprano and flute here, with a splendid solo on flute. Spiewak’s acoustic guitar accompaniment is captivating, as is Antonio’s solo. Ana Maria, Wayne’s exquisite Eastern-tinged paean to his wife is lovingly stated by piano and soprano – gently in front and more intensely going out. The straight Bossa approach is enhanced by Adolfo’s and Lula’s stimulating solos and Martins’ spiraling excursion.

There are two pieces whose initial incarnations came through Wayne’s participation in Miles Davis’ classic ‘60s quintet.  E.S.P. an adventurous item in its original version is taken even further here with a deliciously de-constructed approach by piano and then soprano.  The rubato exposition flows into a daringly staggering groove with a Baião flavor. Brilliant piano interplay with bass and rhythm, as well as a fine soprano and terrific chordal based guitar solo add to the mix. Prince of Darkness sizzles with an original intro in Baião style with colorful percussion, a few interesting new harmonic changes, soaring piano, lithely limber soprano and sparkling guitar solos.

The remaining five pieces feature the full three-horn ensemble. Footprints, while also initially heard through Miles’ quintet can comfortably be called Wayne’s best-known and most-played work. But Antonio’s take on it is thoroughly fresh, with a taste of Brazilian Central West Guarânia rhythms. Retaining the original 3/4 rhythm, the scintillating percussion and the alluring wordless vocalizing of the great Ze Renato provide new dimensions. Soulfully syncopated guitar, lush and vividly rhythmic piano, and a rousing trombone solo that is fully controlled but emotionally raw add to the transformation.

Deluge, which opens the album, is loyal to the straightforward concept of the JuJu album where it first appeared, but renewed in feeling by some syncopated rhythmic shifts on the head that significantly alter the context. Lyrical trumpet, virile tenor and effervescent piano (Rhodes for the only time on the album) are perfect for the fiery atmosphere. The powerful horn ensemble on its bridge helps Black Nile crackle with energy, further emphasized by blazing tenor, piano and guitar solos. Speak No Evil superbly captures the aura of controlled intensity and palpable tension of the original, holding to the adventurously modern harmonies, but spiced with Brazilian flavor through its rhythmic approach. Riveting trombone, rollicking tenor and subtly shaded piano all lead to a short but explosive drum solo that starts the drive home.

The Adolfo original Afosamba closes the album, with a blend of the ritualistic Afoxé style combined with the hugely popular Samba. A full-bodied theme sets the tone for robust trumpet and dynamic percussion interplay that introduces a delectable piano solo. It’s a perfect closure to this radiant album, providing a summary overview that places a clear perspective on the overall theme, demonstrating both Shorter’s influence upon Antonio, as well as the always ongoing continuity of inspiration and development that great artists have not only on each other, but on the entire art of music.

Given Wayne Shorter’s various forays into the world of Brazilian music, the question has arisen… what if Wayne Shorter had been born in Brazil? Antonio Adolfo’s extraordinary HYBRIDO provides a very appropriate answer.

There’s an undeniable connection between music and culture, but maybe sometimes we imagine that bond to be a little too strict. While specific musical elements rose from distinct regions of the world, it’s unrealistic to put those pieces into boxes.

There’s a natural ebb and flow between musicians that results in a flexible exchange of cultural elements, breaking down restrictions and making music a bit more maleable. We can’t easily describe a country’s music by pointing to a few musical elements; that’s an over simplification that doesn’t reflect the modern musical state of any location. In today’s world, cultural has been re-contextualized through a variety of perspectives, making connections readily apparent.

Drummer Ignacio Berroa has embraced this idea of cultural connections and explores the concept on his new album, Straight Ahead From Havana. On the recording, he takes standards from the Cuban repertoire and re-imagines them in a straight-ahead jazz context. Berroa has a history of exploring this connection, most notably during his time with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. The iconic trumpet player embraced every cultural element in music, viewing them all as equals while respecting their differences. Berroa has carried that into his own work as a leader on fantastic albums such as Codes and Heritage and Passion. Today’s video features a sneak peek at Straight Ahead From Havana, letting us take a look at Berroa’s outstanding playing in the studio, where he shows us music transcending cultural elements.

About The Music

1. The Legals Have a Lunch

Free Rads originally recorded this track to be included on their all-breakbeat CD “Freedom of Movement.” Havikoro, the b-boy collective executive producing the 2015 CD felt the tune sounded too goofy for breakdancing. However, goofy was exactly what Free Rads was going for, so they kept the tune in the vault. Featured are solos and arrangements by Jason Jackson on alto sax, Tom VandenBoom on trombone, and Aaron Varnell on tenor sax. Long time collaborators jump in on the jam — Harry Sheppard on vibes, Al Pagliuso on percussion, Pelayo Parlade on piano, Theo Bijarro on bass, and  Nelson Mills III on trumpet. Nelson played trumpet on the Tighten Up, a Houston funk tune that was the number one hit in the nation the week drummer / producer Nick Cooper was born.

‘The Legals Have a Lunch’ is an alternate title for this new CD, with its cover art showing a family of descendants of European immigrants in a diner, eating a feast and looking at their phones, oblivious to the apartheid system right outside.

2. Doomsday Clock

‘Doomsday Clock’ is a ska tune by drummer Nick Cooper featuring solos by Tom VandenBoom on trombone, Matt Serice on trumpet, Aaron Varnell on tenor, and Al Bear on guitar. Guest musicians Lynn Bechtold on violin, and Harry on the vibes all join in.

Since 1947, the Doomsday Clock has been updated by the members of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to represent the likelihood of a human-caused global catastrophe. ‘Make America Great Again’ has been a pathological escapist cultural response to a world with looming climate, military, pollution, and ecosystem collapses. Free Radicals plays ‘Doomsday Clock’ as a rejection of anti-scientific political posturing and as a tribute to the scientists who do their best to bring attention to things that really matter.

3. Chicha Revolución
Bass player Jacob Breier wrote this tune recalling 1970s Peruvian Chicha music. It starts off with a guitar solo by Al Bear and features solos by Pete Sullivan on baritone sax, Aaron Varnell on tenor, and a bridge featuring Matt Serice and Henry Darragh on keys, and Pelayo Parlade on piano.

4. Carry Me To My Grave

Trumpeter Doug Falk wrote this tune during a month when the band was playing a lot of funerals. Doug moved to New Orleans soon after writing the song, handing off the baton to trombonist Tom VandenBoom. The recording was done in a living room, and features solos by Aaron, Al B., Harry, Matt, Jason, Harry, and Tom.

Over the 21 years of Free Radicals music, ten of their musical collaborators have died (Ramesh Mishra, Greg Harbar, Zin, Little Joe Washington, Folasayo Dele-Ogunrinde, Carl Adams, Jeff Wells, Niyi, Stefan Schultz, and Joseph Jackson). With a huge extended family of musicians in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and up to Harry Sheppard at 89 years old, the Free Rads know the next funeral they play might be for one of their own.

5. Screaming

Free Radicals often tracks solos and arrangements over loops made from recordings of live improvs. Most of the material on Free Rads’ 3rd CD, “Aerial Bombardment,” was recorded in this manner. ‘Screaming’ is a hybrid mix of recordings from Sound Arts Recording Studio and two shows at at Avant Garden, the late night Houston hang-out that’s been around as long as Free Radicals (21 years). It features solos by Aaron and Al B., and percussion by Charlie Perez.

There has been a lot to scream about in the last year. ‘Screaming’ is an expression of the band’s frustration.

6. Dadaab

Though this song by bassist Jacob Breier references music from the Horn of Africa, when Subhendu Chakraborty came up with a great tabla part for it, producer Nick Cooper gladly recorded it (the band has never sought purity). It also features Muhammad Jafari on doumbec, solos by Tom, Jason, Aaron, Pete, and Nick C. on drum set, clavinet, and talking drums. Dadaab is the world’s largest refugee camp, and Free Radicals has benefited musically, personally, and professionally from Houston’s large and vibrant refugee population. Free Radicals musicians have no patience for anti refugee rhetoric, and are proud to have refugees in their group, as well as among their students, friends, coworkers, and spouses.

7. Freedom of Consumption

This breakbeat came out of an improv studio session with help from Henry Darragh on piano, Robert Chadwick on flutes, Al P. on congas, and Subhendu on tablas.

8. Angola 3

Nick Gonzalez, the Free Rads’ sousaphone player wrote this one. It’s been played at protests, weddings, funerals, and every other type of gathering the band performs. It features all the horns jamming, with Harry on vibes, and Matt on organ.

The Angola 3 (Robert King, Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace) were long-time political prisoners in Louisiana’s Angola Prison. A long modal piece, ‘Angola 3’ is a tribute to these former prisoners and anyone who has sat in a cell for years deprived of human contact and music.

9. Manifest Dust Bunny

Pete Sullivan, the baritone sax player, wrote this piece and it immediately clicked with a recently expanded 5 person horn section. With quick alternating punk, ska, and funk parts and no solos, it is intended as an overture of music the Free Rads musicians have listened to since high school.

Unfortunately, Manifest Destiny is a worldview that is still around, clogging up Turtle Island from Immokalee to Arizona to Cleveland to Standing Rock. Free Radicals looks forward to seeing it vacuumed up once and for all.

10. Water Beats Rock

Alto sax player Jason Jackson wrote this slow jam in tribute to 70s Bruce Lee movies. The title is a reference to Rock, Paper, Scissors, cinematic boat scenes, and the taoist principle of becoming like water. It features solos by Jason, Tom, Pete, Aaron, and Al B. and alternating bass lines by Jacob and sousaphone by Nick Gonzalez.

11. Solidaridad de la Sierra

Pete Sullivan wrote this one, featuring Robert Chadwick on flutes, Al P. on triangle, and solos by Matt, Tom, Pete, and Jason. Free Rads dedicates this song to mountains and indigenous people who live on them, and intends it as a protest against the mining companies that put entire mountain ecosystems into a grinder for one-time mineral profits.

12. Audacity of Drones

This song features loops from live recordings of a show in which all three sax players brought out baritones, and something terrifying came out.

Like most US presidents, Barack Obama has a legacy of killing innocent civilians and opening up wars on new fronts should land him in front of a war crimes tribunal. The Free Radicals hopes to honor his innocent victims and to invoke the sounds of death machines whose existence taxpayers finance, and have come to accept as normal.

13. Beyond Vietnam

Jason Jackson wrote this tribute to Southeastern Asian psychedelic music from the 70s. It features solos by Jason and Al B. MLK’s ‘Beyond Vietnam’ remains among the most important anti-war speeches in history. Free Radicals musicians find themselves in a weird United States that has failed to learn anything from the crucial message MLK died to deliver.

14. Space Witch

Jacob Breier wrote this reggae tune and invited friend Will Van Horn on the pedal steel. Often, Free Radicals tries to give its songs political titles or associate them with political causes, but this song is simply about a space witch.

15. Scrapple from the DAPL

Pete Sullivan wrote this one, and it features solos by Harry and Pete. Free Rads Street Band has been honored to stand with the resistance against the Dakota Access Pipeline (and every other pipeline).

16. New Sanctuary Movement

Jason Jackson’s song is a tribute to immigrants and those who protect them, and a middle finger to anyone who tries to demonize the immigrants who have improved our society in so many ways. It features Nick on percussion, and solos by Aaron, Jason, Tom, Pete, and Al.

17. Cabinet For Sale

Al Bear’s quick changing blues-meets-samba tune mocks the oligarchs running our nation after absurd promises to ‘drain the swamp.’ It features Al B. and the horns trading off melodies and Brazilian percussion by Charlie.

18. Stump Stomp

Aaron Varnell wrote this tune after a protest across the street from a Donald Trump fundraiser in Houston’s River Oaks. Donald Trump protests have brought out Muslims, gays, #blacklivesmatter activists, DACA recipients, minimum wage workers, and environmentalists to speak with one common voice. That’s one thing for which Free Radicals thanks Trump.

19. Cheeto News Coma

Where can we hide from the 24-hour media cycle and it’s endless portrayals of our hideous president? This breakbeat features Subhendu and the sax players.

20. Survival of the Oblivious

Harry Sheppard’s multiple mallet instrument tracks weave in and out of this instrumental reggae tune. It also features Pete, Aaron, Tom, Subhendu, and alternating bass lines by Jacob and sousaphone lines by Nick G..

21. Ambush ICE
Pete Sullivan’s frantic tune features Harry, Robert, and Nick G. It’s an attempt to tap into the state of those living in fear of an imminent ICE ambush and chase scene, with a short interlude in a muzak elevator.

22. A Call For All Demons

After many years of playing this 1956 tune by Sun Ra and collaborating with former Sun Ra vibraphonist Damon Choice, Free Rads decided to put them together for this recording done entirely in the musicians’ homes. Damon and Harry play on this tune like little kids, which can make everyone forget that between the two, there are well over 100 years of vibraphone experience. The song features Robert on flutes, Matt on organ, and drummer Nick C. plays a funk breakdown on Brazilian instruments, including a repique he got from Damon.

23. American Food Chain

This was a piece from years ago, featuring Paul Winstanley on bass, that the Free Rads felt would close out the instrumental CD well. Free Radicals usually features vocalists, poets, and rappers, but for this album, the band went all instrumental, intending to make up for this by releasing a lyric-filled CD next.

Joe Fields, Legendary Jazz Label Owner

Joe Fields, a driving force in the jazz music business for over 50 years, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.  He was 88 years old.

Joe was born in Jersey City, N.J. in 1929 and raised in Brooklyn. He attended Pershing Jr. HS and Erasmus Hall and was a citywide athlete, winning the prestigious New York Journal American Lou Gehrig award.  Joe worked many jobs during his school years, including selling newspapers, pushing a rack in the Garment District, and driving a cab.  He played college football at Syracuse and the University of Bridgeport where he was captain of his team his senior year.  While attending Bridgeport, he met and married his wife of 66 years, Joan Nancy Boyd.

After graduating from college, Joe had several business ventures but found his calling in the music business.  In the late fifties, he began selling records to music stores in Brooklyn.  Joe was hired by London Records to pick singles for the United States market.  He worked for MGM, Verve, Prestige, and Sue Records before becoming the national sales manager at Buddha Records.  While at Buddha, Joe started their jazz division, Cobblestone Records.  He started his own record label when he acquired Cobblestone from Buddha and renamed it Muse Records.  From 1973 to 1996, Muse created nearly 30 years of successful jazz recordings featuring artists such as Pat Martino, Houston Person, Cedar Walton, Charlie Earland, Larry Coryell, Woody Shaw, and many others.  The label was nominated for various jazz music awards and won two Grammys.  During the mid 80’s Joe acquired both the Savoy and Landmark Records labels.  Savoy was a seminal jazz company with recordings by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, and other influential stars of the early years of the Bebop era.

In 1997, Joe, and his son Barney, launched HighNote and Savant Records.  This started another legacy that continues to this day.  Performers who have thrived on the label include such notable musicians as Kenny Burrell, Houston Person, Wallace Roney, Eric Alexander, Freddy Cole, Tom Harrell, Russell Malone, and others who continue to release new jazz recordings.

Joe was a founding member of the Police Boys Club Lacrosse program in Manhasset, New York.  He was one of the founders of the Manhasset Lacrosse “Day of Champions” where both college and high school teams continue to play in this yearly event. In recognition of his many contributions to lacrosse, Joe was one of the inaugural inductees in the Manhasset Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Joe joined the Manhasset Gentleman Joggers at its inception in the 1960’s, running in everything from Sunday jogs and 5K’s to half marathons.  He enjoyed many years of friendly competition with a wide group of friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Nancy Fields, four children;  Christine Jenne (Richard), Suzanne Fields, Laura Tralongo, Barney Fields, grandchild Allison Passero (Julius), and a great grandson, Julius Passero III.

“Expedition”

(Sunnyside Records 1487)
Street Date: July 21, 2017

For longtime collaborators Denny Zeitlin and George Marsh much of their enthusiasm for music lies in exploration of new terrain. Their recording Expedition finds them continuing their journey into the worlds of sound and spontaneous composition.

Pianist Denny Zeitlin has long been in the vanguard of musical innovation. His 1960s acoustic trio was one of the first to advance beyond the concepts of Bill Evans, and his genre defying electro-acoustic experiments were some of the most intriguing from a jazz musician.

Zeitlin always wanted to develop his ability to be more expansive with his sound. As a child, the pianist dreamed of being able to control an orchestra with a single device. Zeitlin was obviously ready for the advances in synthesized sounds that developed, especially during the 1960s and 1970s, which put an orchestra at his fingertips. He quickly adopted synthesizers and sound design into his musical language, creating classic records like Expansion and the soundtrack to Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Innovative percussionist George Marsh was there through all of these electro-acoustic professional musical excursions, offering a sympathetic and advanced sense of what percussion could add in these widely varying situations. His egoless approach makes him a perfect partner for Zeitlin, as everything they do together serves the music.

During the past four years, Zeitlin and Marsh’s collaboration has been reenergized. Meeting regularly at Zeitlin’s home studio, the two have explored new topographies in collaborative music making. They both see their meetings as a privilege, as there are no pressures of time, finance or extraneous purpose to impede their enthusiastic music making.

Zeitlin’s studio, with its array of keyboards, synthesizers, grand piano, pedals, outboard gear, computers, and monitors, evokes images of Mission Control at NASA.

Setting up to preserve track separation while recording, Zeitlin and Marsh are unable to see each other, and depend upon a rapport that seems telepathic.  They have focused on free improvisation—spontaneous compositions that arise with no preconception. With their shared vision, the music is allowed to bloom on its own accord; there is a fluidity within the sound as harmonic and rhythmic textures weave themselves in and out. Times signatures often do not apply, as many of the pieces find the collaborators switching and blending continually.

The initial presentation of some of the fruits of their labor was the critically acclaimed Riding The Moment (Sunnyside, 2015.)

Two years later, their follow-up recording, Expedition, shows just how profound their relationship has become. The music demonstrates the very feeling of delight that the musicians take in the freedom they have in conjuring their music.

The music presented is inspired and stylistically varied. There are atmospheric pieces, like “Geysers” and the quietly surging “The Hunt,” and ballad-like ruminations, like the ambient “Thorns of Life” and “Spiral Nebula.” The pulsating uptempo tracks are rhythmically fascinating, like the skittery percussion highlight “Shooting The Rapids” and the driving “Sentinel.” The triumphant “Expedition” is a perfect example of the duo’s goal of creating a succinct composition with direction and arc, all spontaneously in the moment.

Zeitlin and Marsh’s forward-thinking collaboration spans 50 years. Their connection has only gotten stronger as they have invested themselves in expanding their vocabularies in electric-acoustic and improvised music. Expedition brilliantly displays what two highly attuned and flexible musicians can create on the fly.

Soprano Saxophonist Of The Year

(2 CD Set Outline OTL 143)
Street Date: September 8, 2017

American original Jane Ira Bloom does it again. This time the 21st-century soprano saxophonist reimagines the poetry of 19th-century visionary Emily Dickinson in two different settings. Her new 2 Cd pack showcases her jazz quartet’s interpretation of Dickinson’s poetry and includes a second version for jazz quartet and spoken word featuring readings by popular stage & film actor Deborah Rush. After the success of her 2016 trio album release Early Americans, Bloom shifts gears with Wild Lines / Improvising Emily Dickinson (OTL143) showcasing her acclaimed quartet in dialogue with poetry in her seventeenth album and first foray into music and text. Her sound is like no other on the straight horn and she lets it fly with long-time band mates Dawn Clement (piano), Mark Helias (bass) & Bobby Previte (drums). Adding the Emily Dickinson narrative to the ensemble on disc 2 is acclaimed actor Deborah Rush. Bloom composed Wild Lines when she was awarded a 2015 CMA/ Doris Duke New Jazz Works commission. She was inspired to musically reimagine Dickinson when she learned that the poet was a pianist and improviser herself, reconfirming what she’d always felt in the jazz-like quality of Dickinson’s phrasing. “I didn’t always understand her but I always felt Emily’s use of words mirrored the way a jazz musician uses notes.” Wild Lines’ premiere at the poet’s home in Amherst, MA was followed by performances at the Kennedy Center and the NYPL for the Performing Arts. The ensemble then headed into Avatar Studios to record in stereo and surround-sound with renowned audio engineer Jim Anderson. The album features fourteen Bloom originals inspired by fragments of Dickinson poetry and prose mined from both her collected works and envelope poems “The Gorgeous Nothings.” The album closes with a solo rendition of an American classic, Rodgers & Hart’s ”It’s Easy to Remember.” Artist Gina Werfel contributes a stunning motion painting for the CD’s cover image. Wild Lines / Improvising Emily Dickinson illuminates why jazz critic Brian Priestly called Jane Ira Bloom “the poet of the soprano saxophone.”

Jazz Vocalist Kris Russell is pleased to announce the release her new single “Down in Brazil,” a contemporary Bossa Nova with music and lyrics written by Jazz singer and award-winning artist and composer Michael Franks, with a new arrangement by Kris Russell and the Mystery Jazz Ensemble.

It will be featured on smoothjazz.com, Global Radio and other radio stations in the USA and around the world on May 15, 2017.

Kris is excited and eager to build on the momentum from her rst single released last year, a sophisticated, sultry, symphonic Bossa Nova with arrangement by Richard Rome, of Cole Porter’s classic Jazz Standard, “I Concentrate On You.”

“Down in Brazil” was recorded at StudioPros in Los Angeles and arranged by Kris Russell and The Mystery Jazz Ensemble, six talented session musicians who all have a repertoire of major label credits. It is a more contemporary and driving Bossa Nova that has the Smooth Jazz feel, because of the emphasis and the inclusion of the guitar and saxophone. With the release of this second new single Kris decided to incorporate a newer sound and still include the traditional instrumentation and sound of traditional Bossa Nova that she loves. She e ortlessly blends into this new recording of “Down in Brazil” the style and the sophisticated sound of those early powerful in uences of the great jazz singers she heard while growing up.

Brazil, with its pulsating, rhythmic sounds, incredible food, gorgeous sandy beaches, unique smells, vibrant colors and beautiful music, inspired Kris to create her newest CD single “Down in Brazil.”

Jazz Vocalist Kris Russell was born and raised in Sacramento, California. As a teenager, she discovered her passion for singing jazz music, but recalls singing from the early age of seven years old. While most of her friends were listening to folk and rock music, Kris was listening to and learning from her parents and their vast collection of jazz recordings. Both her parents were working jazz musicians, and together they formed the “Jerry Murphy Quartet” entertaining in and around Sacramento and Northern California for over 40 years.
