Dear music lover, colleague, friend, and/or family (or all of the above!),

I’m writing to let you know about an Indiegogo campaign that we’ve just launched for a new TV pilot called “Rhythms of Life with Arturo O’Farrill.”

Most of the important things in life — culture, family, work, love and politics — are shared through music. It’s the universal language. Arturo uses music as a window into the lives of people around the world.

Arturo is a six-time Grammy Award winner as well as a warm, enthusiastic performer with an abundant mix of curiosity, scholarship, and talent. He has performed all over the globe teaching and learning at every location. Arturo is a natural for TV, and the pilot episode for this program will bring that home.

In divisive times, it is important to focus on what brings us together. Music is a language that emanates from the soul and is expressed through culture. Think along the lines of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown,” featuring local musicians in domestic and foreign locations.

Please check it out here, and if you’re interested in helping the project come to life, make a contribution — any amount is welcome, of course — and there are some perks involved, too.

We have a cinematographer and production company in place to shoot this pilot in February of 2019 while Arturo and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will be in residence at NYU Abu Dhabi. The residency will include a mambo concert, master classes, and a final concert featuring several Middle Eastern musicians and ensembles as well as the ALJO Big Band.

Please see our Indiegogo site to get the big picture and help us to create an even bigger picture for TV audiences in the US and around the world.

With thanks and best wishes for a great holiday,

Fred Miller

Funeral Services for James Jordan

shem.gif
Funeral services for James Jordan, the retired, former Director of Music Programs for the New York State Council on the Arts, will be held on Tuesday, December 18th at 11 a.m. EST at Benta’s Funeral Home in Harlem. Benta’s is located at 630 St. Nicholas Avenue.  Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m.

Statement from  Denardo Coleman

To all of our friends we are sad to relay the news that Ornette’s cousin and long time manager, James Jordan has passed away at the age of 87.

James and Ornette were inseparable virtually growing up as brothers in Fort Worth Texas. Both played in the Mother AME Church band as well as the IM Terrel high school band. James on tenor sax.

James played professionally in big bands for Big Joe Turner, BB King and others.

James then went on to begin a successful career working as a music educator in Columbus, Texas, and as a member of a popular jazz band in Austin. He later became a community activist in the war on poverty, and served as Executive Director of the Human Opportunities Corporation in Travis County.

In the late 1960s Ornette asked James to join him in New York as his manager. They went on to accomplish many milestones including mounting Ornette’s historic symphonic work Skies of America. The belief and support that Ornette could compose such a work was not there. With that, James managed to secure advances for 2 jazz combo recordings from Columbia Records. Unbeknownst to the company he and Ornette flew off to England where they hired the London Symphony Orchestra. There they recorded what was to be one of Ornette’s seminal albums, Skies of America, James Jordan producer.

Subsequently James Jordan’s unique qualifications came to the attention of the New York State Council on the Arts. James was asked to become the Director of the State Council’s Music Program. He would be with the Council for 29 years, retiring in 2005.

The NYS Council for the Arts serviced all of the state’s arts institutions from the Metropolitan Opera to the AACM NY Concert Series. With James as director countless small creative arts organizations knew they had a champion in the State House. Someone who truly understood how important it was to support the independent artist.

As a leading figure in Jazz related work, James was the founding secretary of the board for the creation of the National Jazz Service Organization.

He also served as Chairperson of the Policy Panel for Jazz as well as for the Grants Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts

After retirement James, rejoined Ornette as his personal manger. They went on to tour the world for the next several years. Including performances of Skies of America in Europe.

James Jordan–another one of Fort Worth’s giants.

Barefoot Dances and Other Visions is a seven-part suite composed in 2014 for the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Each piece expresses a different kind of fantasy. We performed it live in two concerts in Frankfurt February ’14, then recorded it in the studio in September of that year.

When I wrote this music I had been working with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band for about six years, so I knew the players quite well. The suite was written so that every one of the band’s soloists is placed in a framework that would be both familiar and challenging. Each piece features a pair of soloists, playing individually, sometimes together. Several of the pieces begin with a chamber-sized group, “in front of the curtain”. Then the curtain rises to reveal the whole band, having assumed yet another formation.

Bob’s Here imagines the return of composer/trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, who died in 2011. Black Snow conjures up the vision of a normally tranquil scene, still tranquil but rendered improbably dark. Barefoot Dances are just that, something I’ve never actually done in my life. A Glimmer of Hope tries its best to be optimistic, a difficult task these days. Redman Rides Again imagines the return of the arranger/reedman Don Redman. Among other things he was known for writing fantastic clarinet trios. This piece features a real clarinet trio, and a second “trio” formed by Oliver Leicht and his harmonized clarinet. Falling Upwards: try as I may, I still find it impossible. The Cosmic Hodge-Podge offers a vision of the cosmos where galaxies are replaced by blocks of sound; super novas become solo explosions; and a single black hole emerges at the end, emitting just a smidgen of light.     Jim McNeely

Growing up as a Nuyorican kid in the Bronx, Bobby Sanabria first watched “West Side Story” in the movie theaters, on the 10th anniversary of the film’s release. “I was mesmerized,” said the Latin Jazz drummer and composer. Last year, “West Side Story” celebrated its 60th anniversary and to honor this milestone, Sanabria re-envisioned what Latino New York City actually sounds like. The result was his album, “West Side Story Reimagined.” Maria Hinojosa talks to the drummer and composer about what the iconic musical means to him and how he paid tribute to its legacy.

There’s every reason to hope that Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” will improve upon the 1961 film, but I doubt if we’ll ever hear a more thrilling interpretation of that immortal score  than that of the Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band.

Celebrate The Musical Legacy Of
Jazz Giant Gil Evans
At Multiple December Events

Discover the enduring influence of renowned NEA Jazz Master and multiple Grammy winner
Gil Evans at Dec. 15 NYPL panel discussion, and more

shem.gif
You might say December is unofficially Gil Evans month in the Big Apple, as three exciting events turn the spotlight on this legendary jazz composer, arranger, pianist, and long-time Miles Davis collaborator. On the schedule this month are a lively symposium, the release of the first studio album by the Gil Evans Orchestra in more than four decades, and an all-star CD release gig that’s sure to attract a who’s who of the New York music scene.

Gil Evans made a lasting mark on numerous areas of jazz. He led swing dance bands, pioneered the cool school of jazz, and did landmark work with jazz icon Miles Davis, which can be heard on enduringly acclaimed albums such as Sketches of SpainPorgy and BessBirth of the Cool, and others. Evans also delved into electronic music and jazz-rock fusion, drawing new listeners with his arrangements of Jimi Hendrix songs for large brass- and synth-heavy ensembles.

“Gil was a great innovator,” says his son Miles Evans. “He had the next great sound as an orchestrator and arranger, after Duke Ellington.” Gil Evans also had a knack for attracting the cream of the musical crop. In addition to mentoring and collaborating with the greatest jazz musicians across a half century, he formed strong ties and recorded with pop icons like Sting and Paul Schaffer. In recognition of his work, Evans garnered three Grammys and 13 nominations, received one of the first Guggenheim Fellowships ever awarded to a jazz musician, and was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1985, among other honors.

On Dec. 15, at 11 a.m., MOMENT NYC and the NYPL are hosting a symposium on the jazz genius at NYPL for the Performing Arts in the Astor Gallery at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza. Expect to gain insights into Gil Evans’ art and more through presentations by his biographer, Stephanie Stein Crease, the author of “Gil Evans: Out of the Cool: His Life and Music”; Miles Evans, and NYPL’s David McMullin, who will present highlights from the library’s Gil Evans archive. And as with any Gil Evans event, there’s always the chance there will be surprise special guests on hand.

The NYPL for the Performing Arts setting is a good fit for the event, Miles Evans says. “At NYPL, they’re very knowledgeable about Gil’s music. They’re aware that you can hear the Ravel chords in his music, you can hear Debussy; and the people at NYPL know Gil went to the library to listen and study up.”

The event also will include a display of photos, sketches and audio samples from the Evans family’s collection, a Q&A session, and samples of music from a new recording from the Gil Evans Orchestra, “Hidden Treasures Monday Nights, Volume One” (Bopper Spock Suns Music).

The brand-new album, set for Dec. 7 release, is the first studio recording by the Gil Evans Orchestra in more than 40 years. It features several mainstays of the band that held court every Monday for more than a decade at the fabled Greenwich Village club Sweet Basil. Instead of going the “greatest hits” route, “Hidden Treasures” features seldom-heard tunes from the extensive Gil Evans repertoire, many of them written by long-time band stalwarts. “We wanted to showcase the fantastic cast that played with the band,” Noah Evans says. “We wanted to bring back memories of all those great Mondays at Sweet Basil, and bring Gil back to people’s awareness.”

More than a dozen Monday Night Band alumni and several special guests will be on hand Dec. 22 to celebrate the release of “Hidden Treasures Monday Nights, Volume One” at the Cutting Room (44 E. 32ndSt., NY; tickets and info: https://tickets.thecuttingroomnyc.com/event/1796799).

Monday Nights” is not only the first studio recording of the Gil Evans Orchestra in over forty years, it’s also offers some of the most audacious and electrifying music of the new millennium. The late Gil Evans was one of the most respected orchestrators in jazz history and his fabled collaborations with Miles Davis, including “Birth of the Cool,” “Sketches of Spain” and “Porgy and Bess,” set the gold standard for modern jazz arranging. Accordingly, Evans played a key role in the development of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion. All of these influences are strikingly present on “Monday Nights,” a particularly contemporary incarnation of Evans’ music. After a string of gigs that started in the late 70s, the Gil Evans Orchestra began a run of Monday night engagements in 1983 at the Greenwich Village club, Sweet Basil, which resulted in a number of successful live recordings by Gil Evans and the Monday Night Orchestra. The gig continued sporadically until 1994. Mr. Evans had a knack for bringing out the best in his groups comprised of first-call New York players including David Sanborn, Alan Rubin and Tom “Bones Malone,” and such musicians as George Adams, Hannibal Marvin Peterson and Howard Johnson. Gil’s sons, trumpeter Miles Evans and his brother Noah are keeping the flame alive with “Hidden Treasures,” a trilogy of recordings of which “Monday Nights” is the first. The concept here, is to feature compositions that the Orchestra played live in the late 70s and early 80s. Forthcoming are “The Classics,” featuring modern renderings of Evans’ original arrangements, including “My Ship,” and “The Meaning of the Blues,” and, the final release in the series, “Gil & Anita,” named for the late jazz icon and his wife. “Subway,” written and arranged by keyboardist Pete Levin opens the album and introduces the imperial command of the ensemble, anchored by drummer Kenwood Dennard. With dynamic twists and turns, and subtle musical shadings, this is one hell of a subway ride. Commanding solos by trombonist Dave Bargeron and tenor saxist Alex Foster, offering some respect for Wayne Shorter, add to the excitement. Trumpeter Miles Evans wrote and arranged “LL Funk” and once again Kenwood Dennard drives the music with a powerful funk beat good for both listening and dancing. With Darryl Jones on bass, special guests’ solos abound: keyboardist Paul Shaffer, even more laid back than usual; the criminally underrated Matthew Garrison and his highly original bass: and Vernon Reid bringing a thick almost heavy metal guitar tip to the track. The icing on the cake is David Mann, who weaves his bluesy, potent alto sax throughout the track. “I Surrender,” written by Delmar Brown and Alex Foster, and arranged by Alex and Charles Blenzig is a musical requiem for a heavyweight. Mr. Brown, a superb keyboardist who played with the Gil Evans Orchestra as well as Pat Martino, passed away in 2017 and “I Surrender” is his tribute. He is also present on several tracks recorded before his passing. A true musical heavyweight, Alex Foster offers another side of his soulful, highly expressive tenor. A very popular composition from the Sweet Basil days, “Groove from the Louvre,” written and arranged by John Clark, features the composer on french horn, trumpeters Shunzo Ohno and then Alex Sipiagin, percussionist Mino Cinelu, who came to prominence with Miles Davis and Weather Report, bass trombonist Dave Taylor. Deft and determined, drummer Dennard anchors the band through the gentle opening, and then the hard edged groove that follows. There’s a regal, totally swinging feel to the track, with superb ensemble work that shows this is more than just a group of soloists, but a real orchestra. “Lunar Eclipse” written by Masabumi Kiuchi and arranged by the master himself, Gil Evans, is evocative and cinematic. An Evans protégé, Gil Goldstein solos here, memorably, amidst a dreamy synthesizer background which follows him through his two solos on the track, the first of which gives away to Mino Cinelu on bongos and then drummer Dennard, raising the musical stakes once again. It’s a heady musical mixture. More of the master on “Moonstruck,” which is short, whimsical and very tasty. Tracking at 1:49, it’s an ensemble feature that’s both intriguing and attention grabbing. The recording closes with “Eleven,” also straight from the source, a Gil Evans composition and arrangement, which originally appeared as “Petits Machins (Little Stuff)on the 1968 Miles Davis recording, Filles de Kilimanjaro. The set closer is a bristling swinger, a fitting capper to this powerful set of absolutely stunning music. The groove is infectious, a potent platform for solos by alto saxophonist Chris Hunter, Charles Blenzig on electric piano and Alex Foster, who returns on tenor and continues to amaze. Gil Evans Lives!

A FEW REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN’S SOLO PIANO PERFORMANCES

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb from Storyville Records

A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb from Storyville Records<!–A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb<!–

Kristin Korb
That Time Of Year

Known for her exuberant spirit and contagious optimism, it is only fitting that bassist and vocalist Kristin Korb has recorded a Christmas project to celebrate her 10th CD and first with Storyville Records.

“I wanted to assemble a program that creates a feeling of “hygge” and joy without being overly sweet or boring. I carefully selected songs from my childhood, songs reflecting long-standing friendships, and songs that are just fun and wintery. This is a soundtrack for tree trimming, lighting candles, and hanging out with those you love.”

On board for this project are Korb’s long-standing trio mates Magnus Hjorth, piano, and Snorre Kirk, drums. As a holiday bonus, the trio is joined by Mathias Heise on harmonica. The sound of Heise’s harmonica fits the voice beautifully and adds and extra sparkle to the entire project.
In contrast to Korb’s recent projects, she has included two instrumentals to feature Mathias on the harmonica and the band as a whole. On “We Three Kings”, the bass, harmonica, and piano all take turns at the melody on the journey. “Angels We Have Heard on High” gets a Brazilian makeover, full of festive energy.

Korb captures that feeling of “hygge” with enough playful twists to freshen up last year’s playlist. That Time of Year will be a welcome addition to your treasured holiday collection.

JORGE NILA
Cardio Ninja – Jorge’s Story
Nebraska Medicine

Jazz saxophonist Jorge Nila didn’t know if he was going to make it. His heart was barely functioning and doctors at other hospitals told him the only way to have a chance to fix it would be with a pacemaker and large amounts of medications. Those weren’t viable options for Jorge, who wanted to use a plant-based diet combined with exercise to get healthy again. After finding cardiologist Dr. Ed O’Leary at Nebraska Medicine, Jorge transformed himself into the “CardioNinja.” Using his preferred methods, along with some help from Dr. O’Leary, Jorge was back doing what he loved – playing the saxophone. And he did it in a way many patients aren’t willing to try – by eating right, exercising and nursing his heart back to health.

When it comes to the tenor saxophone, Lester Young is like a great apple tree with every other saxophonist being the fruit that grew from his roots. For the last eight generations, those apples have made for a pretty good pie! My new album, Tenor Time,is dedicated to all the great tenor players that branched from that tree.

We didn’t have time to pay homage to everyone, but the guys I have seen and been listening to for years are all here and we are honoring them in a classic organ, guitar, and drums setting: Dexter Gordon (Fried Bananas), Hank Mobley (Soul Station), John Coltrane (On a Misty Night), Wayne Shorter (Infant Eyes), Stanley Turrentine (Rocket Love), Joe Henderson (Inner Urge), Sonny Rollins (Everywhere Calypso), Sonny Stitt (Eternal Triangle), and Harold Vick (Our Miss Brooks).

I’ve known my good friend Dave Stryker since the mid 70’s in Omaha and we’ve played a lot over the years. He worked with Jack McDuff and Stanley Turrentine and has many records out so I trusted his experience at producing, and playing. He’s one of the best at what he does.

Dana Murray and I also go back a ways. We went to the same high school, albeit a few years apart. He is a well- respected drummer, producer, and engineer who worked with Wynton Marsalis in the late 90’s into 2000. Dana also has a world class studio at his home, so he not only contributed great drumming to this project but recorded and mixed the session as well.

Mitch Towne and I have played together over the years in many different situations. He has been playing the Hammond B-3 for the last decade, and  is one of the top organists in the Midwest. Mitch has a great groove and brought a lot of good things to the session.

I’m honored and happy to work with this great band and pay tribute to the tenor masters on Tenor Time!

Jorge Nila

Jorge Nila, began playing music in Omaha, Nebraska in 1965. After playing on the local scene with his good friend Dave Stryker, he moved to New York City in 1978, where there was a huge renaissance in modern jazz happening.  Jorge studied saxophone with George Coleman, and met many great musician/peers.  Jorge worked with Eddie Palmieri, Jack McDuff, Paul Simon, the B-52’s and many others. In 1990 Jorge Nila returned home to Omaha, and has been helping to keep the flame alive there. He teaches and leads a music program at El Museo Latino in South Omaha – the heart of the cities Latino population. He performs and records with various artists in Colorado, Kansas City, and the Midwest. Jorge’s first record “The Way I Feel” came out on Strikezone Records in 2003.

Roy McGrath is a Chicago based tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico and educated in Boston, New Orleans and Chicago, Roy brings to bear these diverse influences in his playing and composing. In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz, funk, Latin jazz and salsa scenes. He has led international tours to Mexico, Singapore, Korea and China. As a composer and arranger, Roy is firmly in the jazz tradition, but his Latin American heritage is an ever-present mind set, leading to wholly original works that are a true expression of who he is. His plans for 2017 include recording and releasing a new album of original compositions,

Remembranzas, and leading two special big band tribute projects honoring legendary Puerto Rican composer Rafael Hernández and Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra.

Jackie McLean’s Artists Collective
Needs Your Financial Support
shem.gif
The Artists Collective founded in 1970 by the late world renowned alto  saxophonist, composer, educator and community activist Jackie McLean as an interdisciplinary arts and cultural institution serving the Greater Hartford area is in danger of closing its doors.

It is the only multi-arts and cultural organization of its kind in Connecticut emphasizing the cultural and artistic contributions of the African Diaspora with emphasis on music and jazz education.
Jackie McLean’s initial intent was to give youth an alternative to street activity, and especially the horrors of drug addiction.

Dwindling corporate and private donations have forced the nearly 50 year old, storied institution to appeal to the public for financial support for the first time since its founding.

The Artists Collective has touched the lives of thousands of Greater Hartford/Connecticut youth and their families by exposing students and the community at large to the great and too often overlooked artists of the past and present, with professional concerts that have featured the great innovators such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and many others. Many of today’s emerging jazz musicians had their first exposure, and earliest training through the Artists Collective, most notably Cindy Blackman and Jimmy Greene to name a few.

The Collective continues to offer the highest quality training in the performing arts-dance, theatre, music and visual arts.

Unfortunately, the challenges facing youth today are even greater now than they were in 1970  when the Collective was founded.

Please consider supporting the Artists Collective today.

Or mail your donation to:
Artists Collective, Inc.
1200 Albany Ave.
Hartford, CT 06112

Thank you in advance for your support.

What the press is saying about Diane Moser’s Birdsongs”

Troy Dostert All About Jazz (USA)
“…..a superlative, brilliantly- conceived recording.”

Brian Zimmerman featured “Song of the Day” JAZZIZ Magazine
The album…creates lush landscapes through delicate brushstrokes and subtle lines, providing ample space for these artists — and the listener — to reflect on the present moment. You’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to your favorite outdoor spot.”

Kev Rowland Gonzo Weekly
“ Inspiring and inspired, this is a wonderful album for all jazz lovers, as well as those who want to hear music which is both beautiful and transcendent.”

Jerome Wilson All About Jazz (UK)
“This CD shows how the sounds of nature can inspire improvisation and be shaped into music of remarkable beauty. It is highly recommended.”

Marc Phillips The Vinyl Anachronist
“The more you listen to Birdsongs, the more exotic and original it becomes, which is why it’s such a special album.”

Kira Gruenberg Downbeat
“Intertwining musical structures with nature’s capricious beauty, Birdsongs provides a vivid oasis for those willing to let imagination lead.”

Fernando Bonete Vizcaino El Debate de Hoy
“A brilliant work, endowed with a superb inventiveness and imagination.”

Dick Metcalf Contemporary Fusion Reviews
“This is some of the most beautiful jazz you’ll ever hear…”

Vittorio Music Zoom
“A chamber jazz album that deserves a repeated listening.”

Leonid Auskern, Jazz Quad,
“Diane and her colleagues play chamber music, very refined, beautiful and inspired by the breath of wildlife. This, of course, is jazz, and high-end jazz.

Lynn René Bayley The Art Music Lounge
“This music is as great as anything I’ve heard accomplished by modern classical composers, and in those moments when Moser’s playing becomes more forward and more rhythmic, it simply acts as another variant in the ongoing musical discourse.”

Robert Bush New York City Jazz Record
“Each musician employs extended techniques on “Dancing With the Sparrows” to evoke the sound of its namesake and when Moser’s magisterial theme emerges, one can almost feel like a member of the conversation.”

Fiona Mactaggart for doobeedoobeedoo
“Birds have inspired many and disparate composers from Messiaen to Hidden Orchestra, and Moser’s Birdsong is a worthwhile addition to the list. This is thoughtfully curated, beautiful music.”

Dee Dee McNeil Musicalmemoirs
“This is a stunningly original package of music that celebrates birds in a very jazzy way.
This is a very beautiful production of original music by Diane Moser, capably interpreted by her stellar piano skills and the two talented musicians who accompany her on bass, flute and piccolo.”

Bruce Gallanter Downtown Music Gallery
“I felt as if I had been walking in the woods and communicating with the birds. Bravo to the immense amount of work that went into this monumental effort.”

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Diane Moser releases her 7 th CD, Birdsongs, inspired by nature’s most lyrical master improvisers—songbirds. Birdsongs combines virtuoso playing, heartfelt originality, and a unique and personal vibe, resulting in music that is exotic yet accessible, like the aural creations of Moser’s fine feathered friends. This new album is likely to vault the multi-talented pianist from her longtime local-favorite status into the top tier of national voices to be reckoned with in jazz. On Birdsongs , Anton Denner on flute and piccolo, and Ken Filiano on bass join the pianist in a trio setting to present nine songbird-inspired tunes, including seven originals. Over the past decade, Moser has performed Birdsongs at venues across the country with different instrumentation from solo piano to big band, acoustic to electronic, and everything in between. “The reason I decided on this group with Anton and Ken, to record all of my birdsongs, was to give the music a little more space and lightness,” Moser explains. “I also knew that both Anton and Ken would play sonically in those in-between places that is so much like the songs and calls that birds make, not always an exact pitch, but somewhere in between.

Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas release their rollicking new Xmas song “Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me” this week.

“It’s a genre-busting crowd pleaser, sure to please fans of  Americana,  Roots, Blues, Rock, Western Swing and Jazz.  The tune was first performed by Elvis Presley, but the Lonesome Fellas rearm the standard with their unique Chicago sound so it’s a great holiday brew of fun.”  JM Reid, Chicago Music Guide

“Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellows keep up their habit of genre hopping good times with this fantastically fun take on “Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me” that recalls the Jump Blues sounds of the 40s so effortlessly that it sounds timeless.   It is a perfect addition to any holiday playlist!”  Paul Abella – Music Director WDCB Radio Chicago

“Such fun!  Rockabilly spiced with some funky Blues licks and a hint of Country.   It should keep everyone toasty on a frosty night.” – Rob Hoff, WQLN Jazz Flight

“THIS is the song for Christmas 2018! It’s got Blues, Western Swing, and Jazz.  I like it, very much so!”  – Brian Clardy WKMS Radio
“The new Xmas track from Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas is destined to be a seasonal Classic. Paying tribute to all the original forms of American Music – Rockabilly, Western Swing, and pure American Blues, “Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me” is my pick for 2018’s seasonal hit of the year!” – Rockin’ Ritchie Ritch – Rollin’ Rhythm Roundup

“Solitaire Miles, better known as Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas skillfully blends Rockabilly, Country and Swing with her new Christmas song “Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me”, transcending all genres. The song appeals to all ages with its toe tapping infectious beat, and a flare of nostalgia for those that remember the times when Big Bands performed at dance halls across the nation. This is Americana at its musical best!”  – Scott Wikle, My Kind of Country

“Jump Blues with a 50s County flavour” – Fred Smith CHRW Western Radio

“People ask what kind of music do I like to play on my show?  I usually tell them GOOD.  Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas plays Swing, Blues, Country, etc. –  it’s just another reason why I like the band so much.” – Keith Parnell, Americana 441

 Christmas Jazz CD
From Chris Pasin and Friends
“Baby It’s Cold Outside”

Featuring
Chris Pasin – trumpet
Patricia Dalton Fennell – vocals
Armen Donelian – piano
Peter Einhorn – guitar
Ira Coleman – bass
Jeff Siegel – drums

“This is what a jazz Christmas should be.”
Mark Gilbert, Jazz Journal

“From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites.”
Jazz Global Beat

“The trumpeter and several collaborators, including pianist Armen Donelian, toggle between calm introspection and swinging heat as required for their treatments of the usual carols and secular songs.”

Frank John Hadley, Downbeat

“Baby It’s Cold Outside… is a shiny silver Christmas ornament, and a fine jazz album too. Dalton and Pasin make the title track into a dialogue rather than a song, like a snowbound Nichols and May.”
Michael Eck, Chronogram

“It’s been a while since I gave trumpeter/flugelhorn player Chris my “PICK” in issue # 158, and now he’s put together a seasonal album that stands out nicely as one of the most cheerful I’ve heard in many years (for those who have been reading us for a while, you’ll know already that I seldom review holiday albums). …. the title track, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“,…that’s more than enough to let you know how HIP this coming holiday season is going to be… some great dialogue between Chris and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell that will put you in the mood for the festivities!”
Rotcod Zzaj

“Here’s a holiday outing that should satisfy traditionalists and adventurous spirits alike, a true rarity… the scintillating Baby It’s Cold Outside.”
David McGee, Deep Roots

“Baby It’s Cold Outside (Planet Arts – 301714) is a delightful Christmas album from trumpeter CHRIS PASIN. Pasin has enlisted a terrific group of musicians including pianist Armen Donelian, bassist Ira Coleman, drummer Jeff Siegel, bassist Rich Syracuse, guitarist Peter Einhorn and vocalist / producer Patricia Dalton Fennell, mixed them into a variety of combinations, and they have produced an eclectic 11-song program that holds your interest no matter the combination of players.”
Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

“The highlight for me is the title cut, which has been turned into a two-way conversation between Patricia and Chris — I have heard many different versions of this song over the years, but this has to be the only one that oozes sex. Patricia often proves her vocal skills on other numbers, but here her spoken voice is like warm velvet and combined with the muted trumpet in the background and the laid-back feel of the arrangement makes this something quite extraordinary. Overall this is a beautifully conceived and performed album that is easy to listen to and totally enjoyable from start to end.”
Gonzo Weekly

“Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.”
Republic of Jazz

“Perhaps the most notable is the title track, a vocal duet between Pasin and Fennell where the traditional roles are reversed. They turn the lyrics into an overlapping conversation, and Fennell plays the seductress with elan.”
Thomas Cunniffe, JazzHistoryOnline

In September 2017 the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded its SilverTuning Fork to MARKUS STOCKHAUSEN (its golden counterpart went to a completely different genre). The award provided an occasion for a concert with Stockhausen’s reconstituted band ETERNAL VOYAGE, which was kindly recorded by West German Radio 3 Jazzredaktion in Düsseldorf.

Though MARKUS STOCKHAUSEN has been known as a crossover artist for years, this band reaches an entirely new level of ensemble playing, a musical amalgam that packs a punch. Besides Stockhausen himself, the septet’s sound is essentially defined by the Persian musician ALIREZA MORTAZAVI, who plays a zither-like instrument known as a santur, and the Indian sitar virtuoso HINDOL DEB. But no less important are the contributions from Stockhausen’s wife, the Dutch clarinettist TARA BOUMAN, and the Lebanese singer RABIH LAHOUD, his longstanding confrère, who sings with sometimes spontaneously invented words in Arabic. Like Hindol Deb, two new musicians are working with Stockhausen for the first time: the German-Indian keyboard player JARRY SINGLA and the German-Polish percussionist BODEK JANKE, a virtuoso on the tabla. What we hear is, to a large extent, improvisations, with melodic themes from Stockhausen’s own pen. One example is the first piece, SEPTEMBER SONG, an elegiac essay that never once courts longueurs despite its 12 minutes’ duration. The other numbers likewise radiate a meditative serenity that is invariably tightly focused and inviting rather than soporific.

In AVANTI Stockhausen, Deb, Bouman and Lahoud bring off impressive unisono passages; ALAMEYN has almost hymnic qualities; and ALIREZA is, as might be expected, a showcase for Mortazavi. The entire concert abounds in riveting beauty and rare urgency. ETERNAL VOYAGE originated some ten years ago as a sextet and released its exciting first album in 2010. Of its original members, only Stockhausen, Bouman and Lahoud remain. But the band not only bears witness to the long-term planning that Stockhausen devotes to his various projects, it also serves as proof of the special affinity with which this flugelhorn player chooses musicians who fit himself and his band while having something of their own to say. Janke plays savagely and expressively, but also very precisely, and santur and sitar form an exquisite combination with their oriental flair. Singla is responsible for the harmonious cohesion of ETERNAL VOYAGE, functioning somewhat as the band’s rock-solid foundation. Lahoud and Bouman add special touches, spreading their wings and taking their listeners to unimagined heights. Enough ink has already been spilt on the unique tone and moving solos of bandleader Stockhausen. Suffice it to say that he never feels the need to place himself in the foreground; instead, he exudes a natural and warm-hearted authority – one quality among many that turns the album ETERNAL VOYAGE / L IVE into a genuine listening experience.

“IT MUST SCHWING!” tells the story of legendary Blue Note Records, founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, German Jewish refugees who fled Hitler, reinventing themselves in New York as jazz record producers. From the 1940s to their retirement in the 1960s, this unlikely duo assembled a superlative roster of the most visionary jazz artists of their era. IT MUST SCHWING! tells the moving story of two friends, united by a passionate love for jazz, and their profound belief in equality. Featuring Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Quincy Jones and Ron Carter among many others.

The film’s world premiere took place at the International Munich Film Festival and was also screened at the Telluride Film Festival as well as the Warsaw Film Festival among others. The Wall Street Journal singled out IT MUST SCHWING! in its Telluride overview as “an unusually lustrous…gem”. Rolling Stone writes that it is “a unique and intimate look at the most exciting era in Jazz, one that changed the world forever … impressive!”

Some of the German press reviews include: “IT MUST SCHWING! is the most elaborate, visually brilliant and unexpected documentary on the topic…A cinematic, historical, socio-political and acoustic masterpiece.”  Radio Brandenburg Berlin

“A Gesamtkunstwerk – the creative collaboration between producer Alfred Lion and the sound engineer, Van Gelder’s studio recordings, the immortal photos of Francis Wolff and the simple but distinctly modern cover design of Reid Miles, the film chronicles how the legacy of Blue Note was created. IT MUST SCHWING! totally breathes new life into their work.” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

The film was directed by Eric Friedler, one of the most acclaimed and prolific documentary filmmakers in Germany. Friedler’s innovative films have won numerous national and international prizes.

Executive producer Wim Wenders is a major figure in New German Cinema. Among many honors, he has received three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB (1999)  PINA (2011), and SALT OF THE EARTH (2014). His acclaimed feature narratives include PARIS; TEXAS which won the Palme d’Or (1984) Cannes Film Festival and WINGS OF DESIRE (1987) for which he won Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Grammy Award Winning

Pablo Ziegler Jazz Tango Trio

Last performances of 2018

“The music… is arresting. It is ferociously beautiful and centered around the mathematical precision of the tango… Horizons blur in mighty syncopations and juicy jazz sojourns and a new hybrid drenched in the blues and jazz emerges.”
Hot House Jazz Magazine

Pablo Ziegler’s playing style is often compared with Vladimir Horowitz and Bill Evans. Tango maestro Pablo Ziegler — the world renowned pianist and composer who helped shape the modern tango — will bring his Grammy winning-trio to California! Jazz Tango delivers strippeddown, jazztinged arrangements of Ziegler’s essential repertoire, offering a raw, elemental concert program.

From fiery, improvised solos to delicately woven ensemble playing, the trio (Ziegler on piano, Hector Del Curto on bandoneon, and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar) delivers unmatched readings of beloved works by Ziegler, as well as modern classics by his late, longtime collaborator Astor Piazzolla. As one the most important living interpreters of nuevo tango, a concert by Pablo Ziegler offers a chance to witness part the living history of this vital musical tradition with his futuristic vision that keeps pushing the boundaries of the genre.

The Jack Mouse Group
“Intimate Adversary”
(Tall Grass TG 8284)
Street Date: November 2, 2018
For the extraordinary drummer/composer Jack Mouse’s latest album Intimate Adversary, he departs from his two previous collaborative and more freely improvised Tall Grass releases – Snakeheads & Ladybugs and Three-Story Sandbox – to focus on his outstanding compositional talents and mastery of classic jazz leadership. Accompanied by his brilliant longtime cohorts – tenor saxophonist Scott Robinson, Art Davis on trumpet and flugelhorn, guitarist John McLean and Bob Bowman on bass – his quintet takes on nine pieces that display their command of all forms of post bop era jazz, along with a delightful taste of 50s-style swing and a compelling gospel blues.

The musicianship is exceptional, not only in terms of the consummate artistry, but also in that most precious element of jazz expressiveness that can only exist in the essence of musicians who know, respect and love each other’s creativity, producing that perfect synergy of unified intent.  Even a seemingly simple blues is transformed into a multi-faceted gem. Further unifying the ensemble is Jack’s marvelous drumming – always viscerally creative, stimulating the soloists and providing the bonding substance that fortifies the structure. Mouse also composed eight of the nine pieces, the ninth co-copmposed with Robinson and Bowman – a work that embraces the more collective style of Jack’s other recent albums…. and provides tangible evidence that “free” jazz is of the identical substance in rich musicality  to the more traditionally recognized forms.

The title cut is part of a 2-part suite and is named for the legendary Pablo Casals’ description of his cello as his “most Intimate Adversary” and is firmly rooted in the Spanish flamenco ballad style and Spanish Gypsy fusion music. Launched with rubato arco bass morphing into a deliciously relaxed ostinato, the sinuous theme ushers in a most enjoyable expedition that evokes Grant Green’s wonderful Idle Moments in its sensuous exposition of great musicians playing in late night mode purely for their own joy…. and that of anyone else who may be fortunate to be in the room with them. The tail end of the suite is a gently up-tempo romp titled Adamant Inversary, an ideally confluent piece, and about which Jack aptly says “I know there is no such word as Inversary … but there ought to be.”

An infectiously atmospheric mood is also prominent on two other items. Inspired by Roy Hawkins’ The Thrill is Gone (immortalized by B.B. King), Twas Never Thus is a beautiful and appropriately blue-tinged ballad expressed in consecutive sections by tenor, trumpet and guitar, eliciting deeply emotive solos by each. Rooted in Jack’s boyhood experience of sitting outside the African American churches of his hometown and listening to choir practice Old, New and Used Testaments is a down home Gospel blues that features deeply soulful solos by McLean and Davis, buoyed by Jack’s ingenious punctuation, far more than the customary shuffle that is so often utilized in this style of music.

Jack looks back on his past as well with Nineteen Sixty-Five (“the year I wrote this, my first tune”). Inspired by his listening to the West Coast/cool school recordings of artists like Gerry Mulligan/Art Farmer, Chet Baker and Shorty Rogers, it testifies to the joyous simplicity of straightforward swing and its timeless appeal and essence without even a hint of parody or the excuse of tribute. But a touch of another kind of tribute is found in Barney’s Fife, a whimsical play on the popular Don Knotts TV character (“Yep, I’m a huge fan of the Andy Griffith Show.”). With a playfully jaunty theme in call-and-response between horns and drums, the excellent horn solos fluctuate between duet with drums and cadenza and are further stoked by Mouse’s highly melodic drumming. One more personal note is Jacomo (“an old high-school nickname bestowed on me by my old high school band director, the great Ormond Parker). At nearly nine minutes, both horns are given plenty of time to stretch, and they do quite vividly on this Hank Mobley-ish blues that concludes with a spirited trading of eights and twelves between drums and bass.

Three Heads Are Better than One is a highly textured driver shifting between straight and implied time, calling to mind some of the experimental explorations of adventurers like Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Brookmeyer in the early days of post-bop free jazz. “The title is really a description of a compositional technique with which I’ve been experimenting.  The players were given a written rhythmic line and asked to find notes on their own to fit over the harmonic changes of a 12 bar blues form. Essentially, each player is coming up with his own head, so every time we play it is completely different.”
Concluding this terrific album with the aforementioned “co-composition” – more precisely, a collective trio improvisation by Mouse, Bowman and Robinson – Three Free is also a powerful lesson.  Structured upon the freedom of improvisation and abstract expressionism that has been a part of the profound jazz legacy since its inception, and then brought into a new incarnation by the masters of the second half of the 20th century, this stunning piece is fully confluent with all of the music that precedes it in its sheer musicality, radiant swing and utterly compelling creativity.

Intimate Adversary is a wonderful excursion into jazz expression at the crossroads of tradition, adventure, virtuosity and joyful exuberance.

New Book Out Now:
Warren Benbow’s “A Drummers Story”!

shem.gif

Jazz is one of the major forms of musical expression. In the 1970s, jazz was moving away from strict acoustic instruments and was adding electric instruments— turning its style toward rock music. Warren Benbow, who has been playing drums since he was young, details the changes jazz music underwent in his artistic memoir, “A Drummers Story” @ https://store.bookbaby.com/book/A-Drummers-Story1

After attending the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, Warren Benbow started exploring the world of jazz. In his book, he looks back on the influences that emerged since the ’70s. He also recalls his performances and encounters with noteworthy musicians like Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, Betty Carter, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Ornette Coleman, and James “Blood” Ulmer. Aside from music, his memoir also mentions the shifts in racial integration and political dynamics in 1960s and 1970s America.

I’ve been fortunate to have performed or recorded with artists such as Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, LL Cool J, Betty Carter, Michael Urbaniak with Ursula Dudziak, Nancy Wilson, Mavis Staples, Teruo Nakamura and Super Friends, Mary J. Blige, Brian McKnight, James “Blood” Ulmer’s Odyssey Band and many others.

I went to the High School of Performing Arts (FAME) and the Mannes College of Music here in NYC. At the same time I also attended the Jazzmobile, here in NY as well, where many of the music instructors were members of Dizzy Gillespie’s big band. Meeting these people is how I began to get jazz gigs and work in New York.

While in high school I had a band with my classmates and we were playing the music of the Rascals and Vanilla Fudge. We were loud. At the same time I was playing jazz with singer Betty Carter that was much softer music, with light sticks and brushes. At first it was not easy to make the transition between playing loud with my band or soft with the jazz vocalist, but eventually I found a way.

I started out as a kid drummer, and although I’m not that kid drummer anymore, every time I get behind the kit I still feel like I am. I enjoy performing and I plan to keep on performing. Once a drummer, always a drummer!

I work in recording studios here in town, but I enjoy performing live around the world even more, though at times it can be quite hectic. In fact, I just got back from doing a couple of club dates in Europe with James “Blood” Ulmer. One show was in Vienna, and one in Munich. I flew to Vienna, arrived at the hotel in the morning, had an evening sound check and performance, and then did the same deal the day after in Munich. Performances were great, but not much time to sleep. The life of a musician…Ha!

I recently wrote a book about my drumming life in the
changing music scene in the ’70s and ’80s. It’s called,”A Drummers Story”.

“A Drummer’s Story is a walk through Bed Stuy., and Brooklyn in the 60’s and 70’s, and on to the High School of Performing Arts in NYC. Through his gigs with
Whitney HoustonNina Simone, Betty Carter, James ‘Blood’ Ulmer and many more, Warren covers the NYC music scene from The Apollo, The Fillmore East and Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland Studios with Stevie Wonderand everything in between.

Warren has touched on a huge variety of the music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s – from the civil rights movement, the assassinations of JFK, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King into John Lennon, the summer of love and Jimi Hendrixplaying the Star Spangled banner at Woodstock. A lover of music from James Brownand Aretha to Sly Stoneand Miles DavisThe Beatlesand Ringo to drummers Tony Williams and John Bonham. Warren covers his life thru the streets and thru the music….”

Lenny White
An American jazz fusion drummer icon, best known for being the drummer of
Chick Corea and Return Forever. ‪ White has been described as “one of the founding fathers of jazz fusion”…

” Warren Benbow’s words give you a literary landscape of the most influential musical periods of the style of Jazz in the last century. He’s lived in it and continues to live an eventful life”.

Warren Smith-
Jazz, and classical percussionist, and educator.
“I was privileged to read Warren Benbow’s book. I have known Warren, it seems, for most of his professional career. His narrative is quite interesting, especially to another musician, as well as a fellow percussionist. Seeing similar or shared experiences thru the eyes of another musician is always an interesting adventure. Warren’s story is reminiscent of my own early years in New York City.

This book chronicles the constant evolution of the music world thru the last few decades. Warren tells of the influence of technology upon the music, as well as the ever-changing styles and developments of the innovators, musicians and composers who most influenced the direction of African-American Music during the 20th and early 21st centuries. His breadth of experiences, and the way he uses them to navigate a successful career, is a must read for young musicians.

I am sure that anyone who starts this book will find it hard to put down, from cover to cover. Great job Warren. We need more active musicians to tell this story from the inside…”

The extraordinary vocal/guitar duo of Benji Kaplan and Rita Figueiredo
are making their debut European tour in he Fall of 2018.

Partners in life and in music, they are also partners in songwriting, with Benji’s outstanding compositions blending perfectly with Rita’s compelling and visually expressive lyrics. Likewise, Benji’s virtuosic guitar fuses seamlessly with Rita’s lovely and beguiling voice with an intimacy and unity of essence that is simply mesmerizing.

This tour follows upon the release of their first album together, Benji & Rita on the U.S. label Big Apple Batucada – a stunning achievement with Benji’s sumptuous chamber ensemble-supported arrangements of ten of his and Rita’s songs, plus three more in the stripped-down emotionally charged duo setting that will be the style of their upcoming tour.

While the duo format is far less complex than the righly textured dynamics of the album, the core elements of both of these exceptional artists are fully in play in this intimate, highly personal structure.

Benji’s unique compositions – fully-informed by jazz, chamber, Brazilian and Middle Eastern sonorities and rhythms – are met at a cinematic crossroads by Rita’s visual narratives that deeply reflect her artistry as a filmmaker. Bringing all of these elements together into a context of superb artfulness, the duo performance of Benji and Rita is an alluring and deeply rewarding experience for audiences of all ages and tastes.

The tour is scheduled to begin in November and will bring them to Portugal, Spain, England and Germany. The tour has been partially arranged by top Brazilian agent Renata Franchini, and also represented by Canadian agent Jean-Pierre Leduc’s Lunched Management.

MARIA MULDAUR’S

“DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG:
THE NAUGHTY BAWDY BLUES OF BLUE LU BARKER” ON THE GRAMMY BALLOT FOR BEST TRADITIONAL BLUES ALBUM

shem.gif

Don’t You Feel My Leg: The Naughty Bawdy Blues of  Blue Lu Barker is on the 61st Grammy Ballot for Best Traditional Blues Album, Best American Roots Performance (Don’t You Feel My Leg), and Best Engineered Album – Non-Classical. The album is a tribute to popular vocalist and songwriter Blue Lu Barker, who made her mark in the late 30s and early 40s, and whom Billie Holiday once cited as her biggest influence. Featuring a stellar band of NOLA musicians including New Orleans A-listers David Torkanowsky on piano (Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas, Solomon Burke), Roland Guerin on bass (Allen Toussaint, Steve Earle, Chris Thomas King), and Herlin Riley on drums (Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson), among others.

“…Here she lightens her timbre in tribute to her friend Lu on top of a hyperactive New Orleans band, and she’s never sounded sexier or more committed….
Grade: A
” ~ Robert Christgau

Don’t You Feel My Leg: The Naughty Bawdy Blues of Blue Lu Barker pays tribute to a great New Orleans blues singer and testifies to the vitality and mastery of Maria Muldaur as she continues to mine rich veins of American Roots music.
Robert H. Cataliotti, Living Blues Magazine

“…Muldaur has done it again.” ~ Richard Ludmerer, MakingAScene.org

“[Muldaur] shares an intrinsic understanding of the music with the band members, so that their collective efforts revive these classics in all of their bawdy glory while adding exciting musical statements firmly rooted in the traditions.
Mark Thompson, Blues Blast Magazine

EL ECO with Guillermo Nojechowicz

Marco Pignataro Brian Lynch

Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933 was inspired by a remnant of Guillermo Nojechowicz’s family history, the passport that his grandmother carried when she fled Warsaw for Argentina in 1933 along with Nojechowicz’s father, who was then a small boy. Crossing Europe by train, they left behind everything familiar to face the unknown in Buenos Aires – a trip that spared them from the Holocaust, where so many others in their community later perished. The Latin Jazz Suite that chronicles their long, uncertain journey is the centerpiece of
EL ECO‘s new recording: Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933.

This is a beautiful and important record.

One of the year’s most spellbinding releases.
 — Mark Holston, JAZZIZ

“Album of the Year” for the annual critics’ choices, to be published in the Winter 2019 issue of JAZZIZ

With plenty of full-throated jazz soloing, the album has one foot in the southern hemisphere and one in the north, and the personnel also straddles the equator: Guillermo Nojechowicz’s sextet El Eco is rounded out by American trumpet ace Brian Lynch, Argentinian bassist Fernando Huergo, Brazilian pianist Helio Alves, and Italian saxophonist Marco Pignataro, with a string quartet added for additional grandeur. Conceived in solemnity and impressively executed with passion and precision, it succeeds entirely.

“On his ZOHO debut “Almas Antiguas” (“Old Souls”), Boston based saxophonist Marco Pignataro presents his all-star quintet. Six original compositions and five arrangements tell a “story of love”, signifying on elements of his Italian and Puerto Rican bloodlines. The music is evocative and powerful, blending modern jazz with shades of Mediterranean, folk & Latin influences. A remarkably cohesive, artistic recital, devoted to vivid melodies and lyrical beauty, in which all members illuminate the roiling emotions and romantic sensibility that underpin the songs.”
