Andy Eulau, bass
Willie Martinez, drums
Renato Thoms, percussion

“ Tranchina can swing with the vivacity of Anita O’Day and echo the fragility of Astrud Gilberto on ballads, but there is nothing derivative in her kaleidoscopic flourishes, embracing chants, rap, spoken passages and vocalese.”
            – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

“…it is clear from Tranchina’s performance that she is a vocalist of the highest order. Her style is not conventional. …when she interprets the narrative of a song and gets in to character she has few peers. Anything new from her will be a welcome addition to the literature of vocal music.”
            – Raul da Gama,
LatinJazz.net

Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.”
            –Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

Her voice is just as much an instrument as the keys, melodica, programming, bass and percussion that accentuate her dizzyingly delightful worldview.
            – Mike Greenblatt,  rant ’n’ roll 2017
Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time.  A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout.  Check it out.

            – CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

  • Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist…
If you love lilting jazz vocal work with a decidedly jazzy flavor, your ears will be mightily satisfied as you listen to Gabriele’s performance in this multicolored collection of music from around the world.
            – Grady Harp Amazon.com/Review

Tranchina’s lithe, clear; elegant singing evokes Sade, Flora Purim, Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister), and that “Girl From Ipanema,” Astrud Gilberto. ..—She uses her voice a bit like an instrument but never at the expense of the song. This set will fly you ‘round the world in a (happy) daze.
            – Mark Keresman Icon Magazine
Gabriele surprises with her ability to hold steady notes that other singers might artificially push down to make smoky, or force up to sound light. All of Tranchina’s notes sound right and expertly turned. None of the notes sound as though the singer has strained to reach them. In short, she doesn’t make a grating sound.
Tranchina’s work flows easily from one cultural to the next. Each piece of the instrumentation meshes with the other, and none of it overwhelms the singer. That is important; the album remains one of vocal jazz and listeners get a chance to hear who the singer is, as shown through the work.

            – Doudie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire

… In every song Gabriele’s sonorous and strong voice is the theater of one actor, where she skillfully gets used to the image of a representative of this or that culture.
            – Leonard Auskern jazzquad
Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well-balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes

-Michael Bailey – All about jazz

Endowed with a unique and specific voice and an ingenious interpretation of Gabriele Tranchina, on his new album she takes us on a true musical cruise, full of surprising events.

            -Robert Ratajcza

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

VINCENT CHANCEY AND NEWMAN TAYLOR BAKER
STAGE THEIR DEBUT PROJECT

“2/4/THREE”

Saturday, February 3rd, 8:00 p.m. @ Roulette

Vincent Chancey (French horn, pandeiro, composition) and Newman Taylor Baker (washboard and composition) announce their first multi-arts collaboration, “2/4/THREE,” to be presented by Roulette Intermedium, Inc., 509 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. For tickets, contact www.roulette.org.

To learn more about the project, please visit @2.4.THREE.

At the heart of “2/4/THREE” are two musicians in deep exploration of their instruments of choice—the French horn and the washboard. Their music drives this twelve-part, 80-minute work-in-progress featuring solo, duo, and ensemble pieces, punctuated by choreography, spoken text, and media. Their creative team includes Tomeka Reid, cello; Keith Johnston, guitar, spoken word; Cleo Francine Wilson, narration and Bill Toles, audio visuals. The project is organized by Jeanette Vuocolo.

“2/4/THREE” is a story about two musicians, but at the start there were three all born on February 4th—Vincent, Newman and saxophonist John Stubblefield. John passed in 2005 of prostate cancer. Newman credits Stubbs for alerting the jazz community to prostate cancer of which Newman is a survivor. Vincent and Newman dedicate this evening to Stubbs and that joint birthday concert they had planned to do.

“2/4/THREE” tells family stories too—ones rooted in genealogical research and DNA testing that Vincent and Newman have undertaken with the help of family and friends.
From Madagascar to Nicodemus, Kansas, the first all-black settlement in the Great Plains, Vincent journeys with his sister and family genealogist Cleo F. Wilson through a family largely unknown having been raised in foster care. We will meet Maggie and George DePrad, a seamstress and barber who raised themselves up from slavery. And through one of Uncle James’ letters we join an annual homecoming of the Giles Bluford Page clan who descended from the first African American guides of the Mammoth Cave.

It is the washboard that draws Newman to the published writings of his grandfather, the Reverend Dr. T. Nelson Baker, who went from the plantation on Assateague Island, VA, to becoming the only former slave to receive a PhD from Yale University in 1903.  Newman will excerpt from such essays of the Reverend’s as “The Negro Woman”  and “A Negros View of the Race Problem”.  “He is talking about the way I feel today,” explains Newman.

Native Chicagoan, Vincent Chancey moved to New York after completion of a B. A. in Music from the Southern Illinois University School of Music. His classical private horn teacher was with Dale Clevenger, principal French horn of the Chicago Symphony. Chancey has performed with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Pan American Symphony, the Harlem Symphony, the One World Symphony, the Zephyr Woodwind Quintet, and the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam. He received a NEA grant to study jazz French Horn with Julius Watkins. He was awarded a Meet the Composer Grant, and a CMA/FACE French American Jazz Exchange Grant for a project with Serge Pesce. His has worked with Charlie Haden, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Lionel Hampton, Tom Harrell, Cassandra Wilson, Shirley Horn, Sun Ra, Lester Bowie, David Murray, and Carla Bley in jazz; Aretha Franklin, Patty Labelle, Elvis Costello, Brandy, David Byrne, Ashford and Simpson, and Maxwell. He appears on over 350 albums and CDs. He has also served as composer and player on a number of film scores. Vincent has toured with his groups at the Verona Festival in Italy, the Asilah Festival in Morocco, the Deer Isle Jazz Festival in Maine, and the Wind Festival in Greece. His three releases include LEGenDES Imaginaires, Next Mode, and Welcome Mr. Chancey. He is a member of the History Makers.

Newman Taylor Baker is known for his solo drum set project, Singin’ Drums, and Washboard XT, his pursuit of 21st century music for the washboard. He started on the washboard in 2010 when working with the Ebony Hillbillies. His hands “just knew what to do.” Baker’s band, Washboard XT, has performed in New York, Ohio, Scotland, Poland and Japan. Supported by a NYFA Music Fellowship Newman’s Singin’ Drums can be heard on Drum Suite Life and The NYFA Collection (Innova). He currently plays with the Matthew Shipp Trio, Vienna Carroll, Jemeel Moondoc, Andrew Lamb, the Deborah Brown Quartet and Sylwester Ostrowski with the NFM Leopoldinum Project, and The Lance Hayward Singers. Baker has toured with Billy Harper, Billy Bang, Sam Rivers, Henry Threadgill, Henry Grimes, Abdullah Ibrahim, Craig Harris, and Monnette Sudler. He has performed with McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, Joe Henderson, Lou Donaldson, Charlie Rouse, and as part of the Richmond Symphony and the Delaware Symphony. Newman has played in the musical theater works of Leroy Jenkins, Diedre Murray, Henry Threadgill and Jeanne Lee. His 21 year associations with Mickey D. & Friends Dance Company and Avodah Dance Ensemble fostered his teaching in schools and correctional facilities. Newman was raised on the Virginia State College campus (now University).

Fernando García Band:
Gusábara Puerto Rico – CD Release Concert
Dear friends,

We are writing to share some exciting news!

Puerto Rican drummer, composer, and bandleader plans to release his third album this year. It showcases his talents as a drummer and composer, as well as his ability to unite an amazing group of energetic musicians from the New York City Latin-Jazz scene. It also features the Grammy-nominated and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón.

“Puerto Rico native García organically blends folkloric Bomba rhythms and Latin jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. His simpático crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García’s third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO music.”

– Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

“Fernando has put together a very focused and cohesive recording, surrounded by a talented group of young musicians. The music is rhythmically inventive and extremely smart, built on the rock solid drumming by the leader. In all a very well rounded album, which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did.”

– Miguel Zenón

The concert will be 9 pm at Teatro Latea: 107 Suffolk St, New York, NY 10002
Cover: $15

We hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Fernando García

CYNTHIA SAYER, the internationally celebrated jazz banjoist, will lead her Joyride Quartet in “The Hot Jazz Banjo Show” in a rare New York City concert appearance at the legendary jazz club Birdland on Thursday, March 15 at 6:00 PM. Birdland is located at 315 W. 44th Street in Manhattan. Tickets:  $30. For more information:  T: (212) 581-3080 or Birdland  or Cynthia Sayer.

“Some of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest 2017’s best moments…Cynthia Sayer and her Joyride Quartet was a fresh breeze. Power banjo, very cool.”
— OFFBEAT MAGAZINE

The founding member of Woody Allen’s jazz band, who honed her virtuoso chops playing with many renowned artists, is known and beloved for her electrifying, swing-based performances featuring her distinctive style of jazz banjo, the guitar’s predecessor in jazz. Sayer’s vocals are divine and her banjo a driving force of nature – think Bela Fleck meets Django Reinhardt – as she delights audiences with an unexpected mix of hot jazz, Great American Songbook, vaudeville, tango, classical, and more.

Appearing with Sayer for “The Hot Jazz Banjo Show” will be DENNIS LICHTMAN on clarinet and violin, JARED ENGEL on string bass, and LARRY EAGLE on percussion.

“A dazzling evening, a capacity crowd… Nobody wanted it to end.”
— GUARDIAN NEWS (England)

“Cynthia Sayer almost made the applause meter explode … Her swingy playing catches you from the start, and her sense of showmanship is present at every second.”
— LA DÉPECHE (France)

“Cynthia Sayer has made her mark in the jazz world in an almost unheard of way, on banjo.”
—INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN MAGAZINE

7 THINGS YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BANJO:

  • The banjo evolved from gourd instruments brought over by Africans who were captured for slavery.
  • There are huge bass banjos, standing as tall as a string bass, overgrown-looking cello banjos, and even tiny piccolo banjos.
  • The banjo was wildly popular in jazz until about 1934, when the guitar came into fashion.
  • It was once commonplace for women to play banjo as parlor entertainment for their guests.
  • In the late 1800s, there was an effort to “elevate” the lowly image of the banjo by playing classical music on it.
  • Early banjo strings were often made from catgut – i.e. sheep or goat intestines, not kitties.
  • If you played in a banjo orchestra or banjo club in 1890, then you were extremely cool.

Musicians

Takaaki Otomo-Piano

Noriko Ueda-Bass,

Jared Schonig-Drums

Composer Bernard Hoffer first heard jazz pianist Takaaki Otomo at a restaurant in New York and was impressed by his musicality, dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense. With bass player Noriko Ueda and drummer Jared Schonig, Takaaki selected five originals, four jazz standards plus one Broadway show tune and two novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets for this recording. Beginning his training as a classical pianist Takaaki switched to jazz when he was a teenager and won first prize in a jazz competition in Japan in 2007. He moved to New York City in 2014. Originally from Japan Noriko Ueda began playing the electric bass, then switching to upright bass at age 18. She is a graduation of the Berklee College of Music where she majored in jazz composition. She has her own trio and quartet and has performed at the Blue Note Jazz Club. She won the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize in 2002. Hailing from Los Angeles, drummer Jared Schonig studied at Eastman where he won seven Downbeat Student Music Awards. A favorite among vocalists, Schonig tours with Grammy Award-winners Kurt Ellling and The New York Voices. He is in demand as a drummer for studio recordings and session work.

Born and raised in Kobe, Japan, Takaaki Otomo started the classical piano at the age of five. When he was 15 years old, he changed to jazz music, listening to the music of Oscar Peterson. He was taught by the pianist, Tadao Kitano, who is a famous music teacher in Kobe. In 2007, he won first prize in a jazz competition in Kobe. He belongs to the group Gingerbread Boys, which plays at a number of venues in Kansai area. In 2014, he moved to New York City.

He has released a number of CDs as a leader and sideman as well. In 2008 his first CD Nightmare was released with Otomo as leader. During his career in Japan, he has performed with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Lewis Nash.

He has been influenced by Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Fred Hersch and Brad Mehldau.

A pianist friend commented that only in New York can you find a local restaurant that serves elegant food and elegant jazz. It was in that venue that I first heard Takaaki play. Even on his abbreviated keyboard I could sense his musicality, his dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense.

That first night I thought this could make a fine trio recording with Noriko Ueda on bass. What I learned later, when he was on a grand piano, was his technical proficiency. To complete the trio Noriko introduced me to Jared Schonig, who as it turned out attended the same school (Eastman) as I did.

We selected five originals, four jazz standards, plus one Broadway show tune (Takaaki’s suggestion) and two Novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

The originals include two exquisite tunes by Takaaki, a beautiful LullWater by Noriko, and two of my tunes written for this project. I first heard them play Brubeck’s Your Own Sweet Way in the club and loved the way they played it. For an up tempo, Neil Hefti’s Repetition though we miss Charlie Parker’s great solo. I thought John Lewis’s Django deserved another hearing, and, because we needed something languid, Thad Jones’s lovely To You, which works quite well as a trio, though sans Thad’s beautiful orchestral textures.

At the time of putting this project together the film The Martian was a big hit in theaters, which gave me the idea to use Holst. What was interesting, was that Holst’s harmonies gave us a fresh aspect when used to play jazz upon them.

Madeleine & Salomon is the meeting of two artists with well-established musical visions: the vocalist and flutist Clotilde and the pianist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, Alexandre Saada.
Long-term friends, they discovered, during a tour of Asia, in 2014, that they shared a common musical aesthetic and decided to form the duo Madeleine & Salomon with its minimalist music stamped in impressionist poetry.

They took advantage of the Melbourne Recital Centre (Australia) invitation in June 2015 to rethink the American Songbook in their decidedly original fashion, and record their first album A Woman’s Journey. This homage to American female protest songstresses is enriched on stage by free improvisations inspired by dreamlike short films specifically edited from stock shots.

A lonely voice, surveying a minor scale and reciting fundamentally feminist lines. Thus commences this first album of Madeleine & Salomon, “A Woman’s Journey”.  A minimalist and delicate duo tackling a humanist and rebellious repertoire. Madeleine sings, Salomon sits at the piano. Madeleine & Salomon, a duo with a natural elegance, “less is more” their essence.

The epic and libertarian duo Madeleine & Salomon embraces with ardor the feminist American songbook to cover it with loving-kindness tinged with a minimalistic music and with a deep and incandescent chant. Their 1st album A Woman’s Journey reveals a graceful and unexpected reinterpretation of a humanist and rebellious repertoirefrom Nina Simone to Janis Joplin to Billie Holiday to Josephine Baker.

Vocalist and flutist Clotilde (CLOW-TEELD) completed her studies in jazz and improvised music at the IACP and EDIM schools. She also explored world music vocal techniques ,developing an original approach to the voice as a multifaceted and narrative instrument. In 2007, Clotilde released Live au 7 Lézards. Accompanied by guitarist Hugo Lippi, the album was acclaimed by Jazzman, Jazzmag and Jazzhot magazines.

Pianist , composer, and multi – instrumentalist Alexandre Saada [SAH – AH – DAH

(starring Mau Mau The Zulu Vampire, Half Man-Half Cadillac), The Insatiable Mechanical Monster, Uptown Sunday Night, and Black by Popular Demand; they have been performed at such landmark New York clubs as Gypsy’s, the Grand Finale, Reno Sweeney, Les Mouches, the Club at La MaMa, the Horn of Plenty, Greene Street, and most recently Joe’s Pub and the Laurie Beechman Theatre—as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London. In 1984, he co-wrote, choreographed, co-directed, and starred in the Broadway musical revue Andre De Shields’ Haarlem Nocturne; it celebrated the nightclubs of Harlem’s Golden Age and was produced at The Latin Quarter.

The Bistro Awards gala will be held on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 pm at Gotham Comedy Cub, 208 W. 23rd St., produced by Sherry Eaker, who has headed up the event since its inception.

A full list of winners will be announced at the end of the month, when tickets will go on sale at www.BistroAwardscom.

Joe Vincent Tranchina, piano

Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.

Early on, he booked legendary jazzmen such as Buddy Rich and Dizzy Gillespie, “I idolized these guys growing up, and never dreamed I’d work with them, I never thought this would happen,” Jack reveals. To this day, “That feeling is still there. It doesn’t get any better than this for a fan.”

Listen to Randy Cohen’s Interview with Jack Kleinsinger

During his 45 years producing the concert series Highlights in Jazz, he has gotten to know many brilliant musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once came by the house and played for his cat. But is jazz, if not dead then relegated to a museum piece? The future of an art form: at BMCC-Tribeca Performing Arts Center with music from Nicki Denner and Anton Denner, both very much alive.

DownBeat Editors Pick January 2018

By Ed Enright

Steve Slagle dedicates each track on his new album to people, places and things that have served as sources of artistic inspiration during his five-decade career as a saxophonist/flutist, composer, educator, arranger and bandleader on the New York scene. Dedication starts with a kick as Slagle (on alto), pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Bill Stewart and percussionist Roman Diaz conjure the essence of Sonny Rollins on Slagle’s “Sun Song,” a summery blowing vehicle based on a buoyant calypso-like groove. Guitarist Dave Stryker, a frequent touring/recording collaborator with Slagle, joins the group on the angular and driving “Niner” (dedicated to bassist Steve Swallow), and five more tracks. Stryker’s presence on Dedication is deeply felt, notably on the Brazil-dedicated bossa nova tune “Triste Beleza” playing nylon-string acoustic, as well as on his own “Corazon” (dedicated to Joe Zawinul), a ballad that flows with resonant alto vibrato, shimmering brushes, simple bass line movement and rubato strums of cleanly amplified electric guitar. Other subjects of Slagle’s dedication include Jackie McLean (the conga-driven “Opener”), Wayne Shorter (his “Charcoal Blues”), painter Marc Chagall (the guitar/soprano sax dream “Watching Over”), Slagle’s daughter Sophia (the playful, odd-metered swinger “Sofi”) and swing itself (the uptempo romp “Major In Come”). It all adds up to an enjoyable and meaningful collection of fresh, straightahead jazz from some of the genre’s best—and most dedicated—practitioners.

VINCENT CHANCEY AND NEWMAN TAYLOR BAKER
STAGE THEIR DEBUT PROJECT

“2/4/THREE”

Saturday, February 3rd 8:00 p.m @ Roulette

Their music drives this six-part, 90-minute work-in-progress featuring solo, duo, and ensemble pieces, punctuated by the choreography, spoken text, and media. Their creative team includes Tomeka Reid, cello; Keith Johnston, guitar, spoken word; Cleo Francine Wilson, narration; Maria Mitchell, choreography, dance, spoken word and Bill Toles, audio visuals.

Newman will excerpt from such essays of the Reverend’s as “The Negro Woman” (1908) and “A Negros View of the Race Problem” (1908).

Sons of Jazz Legends
Coming to the Bickford Theatre

Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play
Saturday, January 20, 8:00 PM
Tickets start at $45

T.S. Monk
Thursday, February 22, 7:30 PM
Tickets start at $35

Many performers are children of famous musicians but it is not always easy to carve an independent path in entertainment world. For instance, there was Frank Sinatra, Jr. or Natalie Cole. But this winter, the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Musem in Morristown, New Jersey will present two sons of jazz legends who have become musical stars in their own right: Dave Brubeck’s son Chris Brubeck with his group Triple Play and Thelonious Monk’s son T.S Monk with his ensemble.

Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play will perform on Saturday, January 20. The group brings together three exceptional musicians whose good-time music draws on folk, blues, and jazz.

A Grammy-nominated composer and musician Chris Brubeck has been called “one of the finest jazz trombonists around today” by Downbeat Magazine and “one of the most capable electric bassists” by the Los Angeles Times. He began touring and recording with his legendary father when he was young and has gone onto international acclaim as a performer, composer, and band leader. He has worked with a diverse cross section of artists including opera stars Frederica von Stade and Dawn Upshaw, pop stars Willie Nelson and B. B. King, and jazz greats Gerry Mulligan, Stephane Grappelli, and Bobby McFerrin.

His trio Triple Play delivers an epic sojourn through American music unlike any other band today and includes Peter “Madcat” Ruth, a virtuoso musician who is considered one of the best and most versatile harmonica players in the world and singer/guitarist Joel Brown a much in-demand soloist and chamber musician.

Chris Brubeck explains that Dave was always just dad to him. “I recall a couple of experiences when I was very young that got me thinking differently about my dad. One night after a concert with the famous quartet, we went to a classic New Jersey diner where they had a jukebox. I remember sitting in the booth and noticing “Take Five” on the playlist and being amazed. The other time it hit me that my dad was famous was when the Beatles came to America. When I heard them say in an interview that they listened to Dave Brubeck, I knew that Dad was important.”

Triple Play has one foot in the jazz world and another in the blues world but their repertoire includes many famous Dave Brubeck tunes including “Take Five,” “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” “Unsquare Dance,” “It’s A Raggy Waltz,” and the beautiful “Thank You.” The rare New Jersey concert will include an appearance by their good friend, New Jersey harmonica star Rob Paparozzi.

Drummer T.S. Monk and his group will pay tribute to his famous father in concert on Thursday, February 22. Thelonious Monk is the second most recorded jazz composer (after Duke Ellington) and many of his works have become jazz standards: “Round Midnight,” “Blue Monk,” “Straight, No Chaser,” “Rudy, My Dear,” and “Well, You Needn’t” to name just a few.

T.S. got his first drumsticks from a regular visitor to their family home, Max Roach, and eventually joined his father’s trio, touring with him until he retired in 1975. Setting out on his own, Monk had two hit records with his R&B group, Natural Essence, before returning to jazz in 1992. He now heads up the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to promote jazz education, provide scholarships for music students, and promote his father’s legacy.

“Thelonious Sphere Monk was just daddy,” says T.S. Monk. “He took me and my sister, Boo Boo [nickname], everywhere, and taught me how to treat girls, spin tops, and change my sister’s diapers, among many other things. I can’t recall even one time in my life when I ever called him Thelonious, or Monk, or pop, or anything other than daddy.”

Both Dave Brubeck and Thelonious Monk were family men and raised their children well. You can see the results in these two great concerts in January and February. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 973-971-3706 or visiting www.morrismuseum.org/jazz-showcase. The Bickford Theatre is located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown and offers free parking and full accessibility. Box office hours for phone sales are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Walk-up hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

“The Hudson Jazz Festival has been a long time in the making! I first moved to Germantown in 1971 and I became a contributor to the Hudson Opera House (now Hudson Hall) when it opened in 1992. And here we are in 2018, and I’m proud to support the Hudson Jazz Festival because it enriches our community and makes it a better place to live.” – Sonny Rollins

Hudson, NY – January 12, 2018:  Hudson Hall is proud to announce the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival (HJF), Friday February 16, Saturday February 17 and Sunday February 18, 2018, at Hudson Hall’s historic 1855 theater. Curated by noted Hudson-based jazz pianist, Armen Donelian, the festival highlights talent with musical influences that span the globe.

“I see this festival as a rare opportunity both to raise regional jazz awareness as well as to reward loyal jazz fans with a first-rate presentation”, says Donelian. “We are extremely proud to grace this beautiful venue with an exceptional lineup of world-class performers. Sit back and enjoy this cross-section of today’s amazing jazz talent, from emerging artists to established jazz masters.”

The festival kicks off with international flair on Friday evening, February 16, 2018 with the entrancing sounds of The Ara Dinkjian Quartet, an instrumental collaboration rooted in Turkish, Armenian and Macedonian Roma music headed by world-renowned oud player Ara Dinkjian and featuring award-winning clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski. Armen Donelian opens for the quartet with a solo piano set of Armenian-inspired romances from his Sunnyside EP, Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors.

On Saturday, February 17 at 7pm, one of a kind jazz matriarch Sheila Jordan and vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger Dominique Eade bring their world-class talent to the Hudson Hall stage, following an afternoon of jazz solo piano immersion with 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, hitting the keys ahead of critically acclaimed NYC jazz scene favorite, Aaron Goldberg and young lion James Francies at 3pm. Festival audiences can then catch a free screening of director Stephanie Castillo’s award-winning portrait of the life and premature loss of a great American jazz talent, Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song (2016) at 5:00pm.

Students are invited to a multi-generational hands-on jazz improvisation workshop on Sunday morning at 11am taught by pianist Armen Donelian and saxophonist Marc Mommaas, co-founders of Hudson Jazzworks. The festival then comes to a fiery close at 3pm with the wild and spontaneous Quarteto Moderno. Infusing Brazilian samba with contemporary jazz and chamber music, the quartet is led by guitarist and musicologist, Richard Boukas, and features clarinetist Lucas Pino, bassist Gustavo Amarante, and drummer Muricio Zottarelli.

Hudson Hall is located at 327 Warren Street, Hudson, NY. Tickets start at $25, with festival Weekend Passes available for $90, which includes priority entry and seating to every performance and event. Online ticket purchases can be made at hudsonhall.org, or by calling (518) 822-1438.

HUDSON JAZZ FESTIVAL, FEBRUARY 16-18, FULL LINE UP:

SOUNDS FROM THE SILK ROAD
Friday, February 16 at 7pm
Tickets: $25

Armen Donelian: Songs Of My Ancestors
Armen Donelian, piano

A king of the keys performs the ‘King of Songs’. “A pianist with a crystalline touch” (the New York Times), Armen Donelian delves into his roots with his “beautifully elusive” (Downbeat) arrangements of poetic works by the 18th century Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova, whose name means ‘King of Songs’ in Persian. A professor for 32 years at the New School College of the Performing Arts, 2002 Fulbright Scholar and a widely-read author, Donelian has performed alongside jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker and Lionel Hampton and is the curator of the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival.

The Ara Dinkjian Quartet featuring Ismail Lumanovski
Ara Dinkjian, oud
Ismail Lumanovski, clarinet
Pablo Vergara, keyboard
Engin Gunaydin, percussion

Not bound by a single tradition, The Ara Dinkjian Quartet encompasses the dance beat of the Balkans alongside elements of jazz, rock and classical music. Composed of four extraordinary musicians, the quartet features “brilliant and fearless…clarinetist” (the New York Times) Ismail Lumanovski, keyboard player Pablo Vergara, percussionist Engin Gunaydin and leader Ara Dinkjian, one of the world’s top oud players and founder of the groundbreaking instrumental groups Night Ark and The Secret Trio.

SOLO PIANO SUMMIT: 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, Aaron Goldberg and James Francies
Saturday, February 17 at 3pm

Tickets: $25

For lovers of jazz piano, a rare chance to hear three great soloists in one afternoon. 2018 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award winner, JoAnne Brackeen is widely considered one of the “most celebrated jazz pianists of all time” (the Boston Globe), while Aaron Goldberg has made his name as one of jazz’s most compelling young pianists with his “quick witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic,” both as a bandleader and collaborator with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Guillermo Klein. Also joining this afternoon of unadulterated jazz piano immersion is young pianist/composer James Francies (24 Seven Artist Development), whose inquisitive mind, synesthesia (the ability to hear in colors) and distinct melodic styling has seen him tour internationally with Jeff “Tain” Watts, Chris Dave and Drumhedz and appear with The Roots, Nas, Jadakiss, and Raekwon (Wu Tang Clan) during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend.

SCREENING: Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song
Directed by Stephanie Castillo (2016, 97min)
Saturday, February 17 at 5pm

Free. Reservations at hudsonhall.org

Thomas Chapin was described by the New York Times as “one of the more exuberant saxophonists and bandleaders… one of the few to exist in both the worlds of the ‘downtown’ experimentalist scene and mainstream jazz.” Already a virtuoso, Chapin was nearing the pinnacle of his meteoric rise when leukemia claimed him at the age of 40 in 1998. This award-winning documentary draws an intimate portrait of this musical explorer who challenged stylistic boundaries and dissolved distinctions between sound and music. Director Stephanie Castillo will be in attendance.

TAKE TWO: Sheila Jordan and Dominique Eade
Saturday, February 17 at 7pm

Tickets: $35
Sheila Jordan, vocals, with Cameron Brown, bass
Dominique Eade, vocals, with Armen Donelian, piano

The legendary Charlie Parker often introduced vocalist Sheila Jordan as “the singer with the million dollar ears” – and she’s got a priceless voice to match. Like Billie Holiday, Jordan’s voice resembles a saxophone improvising on a melody, highlighted by her unique bebop and scat jazz singing style that has earned her praise as “[o]ne of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers” (Scott Yanow). Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania’s coal-mining country, Jordan began singing as a child and by the time she was in her early teens she was working professionally in Detroit clubs. She moved to New York City in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that she made her first recordings, including The Outer View with George Russell, which featured a famous 10-minute version of You Are my Sunshine. She “reigns indisputably as mellow mistress of any jazz club she visits” (Downbeat) and has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2012 NEA Jazz Master. Jordan is followed by the “impossibly versatile” (the New York Times Magazine) vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger, Dominique Eade. Signed to RCA in 1996, Eade recorded two critically acclaimed albums with RCA, When the Wind Was Cool with Benny Golson, Fred Hersch, James Genus, Matt Wilson, and many others, and The Long Way Home with Dave Holland and Victor Lewis. She later released an album of duets, Open, in the fall of 2006. Jordan is accompanied by bassist Cameron Brown, and Eade is joined on stage by pianist and 2018 HJF curator, Armen Donelian.

Hudson, NY – December 8, 2017:  Hudson Hall is proud to announce the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival (HJF), Friday February 16, Saturday February 17 and Sunday February 18, 2018, at Hudson Hall’s historic 1855 theater.

Saturday, February 17 at 5:00 pm

Echo Prize-Winning Jazz Singer Lucia Cadotsch Makes Her U.S. Debut in January 2018 with Her Berlin-Based Speak Low Trio Featuring Saxophonist Otis Sandsjö and Bassist Petter Eldh

Lucia appears with her Speak Low trio in New York City on January 13 as part of a Sound It Out series double-bill at Greenwich House

Lucia, Otis & Petter will be performing music from their debut album, Speak Low, which earned five-star raves in both DownBeat and The Guardian along with glowing reviews for its companion remix album, Speak Low Renditions

“When Cadotsch sings standards with her kindred-spirit trio mates, Sandsjö on tenor saxophone and Eldh on double-bass, songs from a half-century ago feel renewed, as timeless art is refracted through a modernist prism. With no harmony instrument and the uncanny blend of these three performers – the cool precision of the vocalist, the free-jazz edge of the instrumentalists – such songs as ‘Willow Weep for Me’ and ‘Moon River’ have fresh textural and emotional resonance.” — DownBeat

With a sharp-eared love of the past but a sensibility resolutely of the present, new-era jazz singer Lucia Cadotsch’s trio Speak Low – featuring tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö and double-bassist Petter Eldh – reanimates songs long seemingly set in amber. Hailing from their adopted home of Berlin, Germany, these three musicians come at the Great American Songbook from a European angle, their “retro-futurist” sound as informed by remix culture and free jazz as by their appreciation for classic vocal records. Reviewing the group’s eponymous debut album of 2016, Speak Low (Yellow Bird/Enja), The Guardian declared: Remember the name Lucia Cadotsch – you’re going to be hearing a lot of it,” adding: “Cadotsch is a young, Zurich-born vocalist who possesses a classical clarity, a folk singer’s simplicity and an appetite for performing very famous songs (‘Moon River,’ ‘Don’t Explain,’ ‘Strange Fruit’) in the company of two edgy free-jazz instrumentalists, who flank her sedate progress with split-note sax sounds and spiky basslines with percussive strumming. In this compelling trio’s hands, the process is remarkably melodious and illuminating… It’s all eerily beautiful.” Along with glowing reviews, Lucia won the 2017 Echo Jazz Prize – the German equivalent of a Grammy Award – for Best Vocalist of the Year for Speak Low. She and her Swedish friends Otis and Petter bring the bittersweet repertoire of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Dinah Washington vividly alive for a new generation of listeners, as well as for veteran music lovers in search of fresh treatments of these timeless songs.

Lucia, Otis & Petter bring Speak Low to New York City for the first time in January 2018. The trio performs on Saturday January 13 in the Sound It Out series at Greenwich House Music School, with pianist Elias Stemeseder as a special guest for a couple of tunes on both nights. The Greenwich House show will be part of a special 6:30pm double-bill with Jagged Spheres – featuring Stemeseder, saxophonist Anna Webber and drummer Devin Gray – on the second half. Greenwich House Music School is located at 46 Barrow St. in New York City’s Greenwich Village. (More venue details below.)

Profiled in DownBeat magazine, Lucia explained the individualistic approach she takes with the trio: “I want to be subtle and melodic in my phrasing, but I also need roughness and intensity in music. Otis and Petter say in the songs what I don’t say myself. While I’m the still center, they can storm around me.” Alluding to the act of stripping nostalgia from this repertoire, Otis added: “Our common unsentimental approach to these melodies takes away the glossiness that these beautiful songs can often get stuck in.”

Discussing their arrangements, Lucia said: “What we do is like sampling culture in hip-hop. We might quote a detail from an old recording, but change the register and tempo and then loop it into our arrangement organically.” As DownBeat noted, they turn a high-register clarinet part in “Deep Song” from a Billie Holiday LP into a bass line; they echo an intro improv seen in a live Nina Simone video of “Ain’t Got No” in their arrangement; they repurpose a marimba line in Johnny Hartman’s version of “Slow, Hot Wind” as an outro hymn melody. Germany’s Jazzpodium described these reinventions as “like a musical night trip… urban, with an analog directness and a sheer boundless freedom in its approach to interpretation and sound.” And the DownBeat review of Speak Low and its remix-album follow-up, Speak Low Renditions, hailed the trio’s creative approach overall: “Such is the spell that Cadotsch, Sandsjö and Eldh cast that it can make one feel that this is the only way age-old standards should be approached: not slavishly but fearlessly, with an unfettered imagination approaching that of the songs’ originators.”

The trio’s distinctive black-and-white videos for Speak Low have a European art-house feel, as with the official album trailer here. There is also a gorgeous one-shot music video for “Slow Hot Wind,” as well as live videos for “Speak Low” and “Strange Fruit” / “Ain’t Got No,” among others. Touching upon their European roots, Lucia, Otis & Petter have lately added to their live repertoire an arrangement by the great Italian modernist Luciano Berio of the Anglo-American folk song “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” as well as an English translation of the dark “Ballad of the Drowned Girl” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. About the storytelling resonance of old songs, whether sung by Lotte Lenya or Billie Holiday, Lucia concludes: “Times change, but humans don’t seem to, for better and worse.”

JAZZ AT KITANO January 12 & 13, 2018

The ROGER KELLAWAY Trio
Special Guest – Brazilian Vocalist Téka

An evening of “cool jazz” and lush Brazilian music
Jay Leonhart (bass) & Roni Ben-Hur (guitar)
David Silliman (percussion)
Presented by Pat Philips-Stratta

Roger Kellaway Grammy award winner and Academy Award nominated pianist/composer, has recorded more than 250 albums. He’s worked with a who’s who of the music world: Ellington to Elvis, Carmen McRae, Joni Mitchel, Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones and Yo-Yo Ma, to name a few. He was Musical Director for Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Van Morrison, and for major Jazz events at Carnegie Hall, including the 80th Birthday Tribute to Stephane Grappelli and the Oscar Peterson Tribute.

Téka is an artist with roots firmly planted in the traditions of Brazilian music…the Samba, Bossa Nova & Choro. From an early age, she fell under the spell of American Jazz and began soaking up the sounds of the Jazz greats of the day. Today, her music has become a fusion of the sensual rhythms of Brazil with the sophistication and improvisation of Jazz, which she calls “New Bossa”. She has performed and recorded with Brazilian legends Gilberto Gil, Flora Purim and Airto Moreia.
