Strykin’ Ahead

4 Stars Downbeat Nov. 2017

“….Overall, the album casts a warm, clear glow, with plenty of cohesive interplay between Stryker, organist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. While influenced by many guitarists, Stryker remains true to his own vision. Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell may be touchstones, but Stryker forges his own sound throughout.” – Martin Kasdan

Critical Praise For Strykin’ Ahead

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

Madeleine & Salomon is the meeting of two artists with well-established musical visions: the vocalist and flutist Clotilde and the pianist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, Alexandre Saada.
Long-term friends, they discovered, during a tour of Asia, in 2014, that they shared a common musical aesthetic and decided to form the duo Madeleine & Salomon with its minimalist music stamped in impressionist poetry.

They took advantage of the Melbourne Recital Centre (Australia) invitation in June 2015 to rethink the American Songbook in their decidedly original fashion, and record their first album A Woman’s Journey. This homage to American female protest songstresses is enriched on stage by free improvisations inspired by dreamlike short films specifically edited from stock shots.

A lonely voice, surveying a minor scale and reciting fundamentally feminist lines. Thus commences this first album of Madeleine & Salomon, “A Woman’s Journey”.  A minimalist and delicate duo tackling a humanist and rebellious repertoire. Madeleine sings, Salomon sits at the piano. Madeleine & Salomon, a duo with a natural elegance, “less is more” their essence.

The epic and libertarian duo Madeleine & Salomon embraces with ardor the feminist American songbook to cover it with loving-kindness tinged with a minimalistic music and with a deep and incandescent chant. Their 1st album A Woman’s Journey reveals a graceful and unexpected reinterpretation of a humanist and rebellious repertoirefrom Nina Simone to Janis Joplin to Billie Holiday to Josephine Baker.

Vocalist and flutist Clotilde (CLOW-TEELD) completed her studies in jazz and improvised music at the IACP and EDIM schools. She also explored world music vocal techniques ,developing an original approach to the voice as a multifaceted and narrative instrument. In 2007, Clotilde released Live au 7 Lézards. Accompanied by guitarist Hugo Lippi, the album was acclaimed by Jazzman, Jazzmag and Jazzhot magazines.

Pianist , composer, and multi – instrumentalist Alexandre Saada [SAH – AH – DAH
studied classical music for ten years before expanding to include jazz, pop, and song, stud ying under Michel Petrucciani. Since his installation in Paris in 1999 he has not only carved out his own career of compos ing, performing and lead ing but has also worked alongside many artists as Leonore Boulanger, Electricdiva and Malia. In 2010 he performed solo at the Saint – Germain Jazz Festival. He has compose d for cinema, garnering a purse of the Sacem. • Songs We Like is an engaging recording that never strays too far away from the basic melodies that made these songs from the sixties and seventies so likeable and memorable in the first place. What the Hazelrigg Brothers and Mr. O’Reilly have shown is that they can also be the springboard for some inventive re- interpretation. – Ralph A. Miriello, Huffpost

  • The result is a recording that appeals to the jazz purist and the causal jazz/pop music listener alike. Songs We Like is guaranteed to be an album you’ll love. – Preston Frazier, Something Else Reviews

  • Audiophiles to the max, the group has searched for—and found—a process of recording that captures to perfection the experience of hearing a piano trio in the real world—warm and interactive, organic, the bass embracing drums like it does from the seat in one of the front rows of a small jazz club, with the piano dancing inside that musical abrazo, on this highly-engaging debut. – Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

  • The recorded sound is expertly shaped around the trio and the excellent soli so that it is impossible not to be knocked out by the sheer creative firepower of each artist as well as by a recording that meets every demand of the audiophile in the capture and delivery of this music. – Raul da Gama, World Music Report

  • While their makeup suggests a traditional piano trio, their work sounds utterly fresh. These performances completely win me over. – Barry Bassis, The Epoch Times

• A fun diversion played straight, this is one delight of a palette cleanser. – midwestrecord.com, August, 2017

“…one of the best pure trio recordings of the year” – Audiophile Audition

“Creative and successful. A+” – JazzWeekly.com

Producer Jack Kleinsinger and the entire Highlights In Jazz family joins the rest of the jazz world in mourning the late Kevin Mahogany, who passed away December 17, 2017. He was originally scheduled to appear at the season kickoff concert.

Renowned singer Allan Harris has joined the lineup for the first concert of the season, featuring the Bucky Pizzarelli Trio.

At 92 years old, guitar virtuoso Bucky Pizzarelli has had a long and fabled career playing with internationally renowned favorites across the generations, from Benny Goodman to Paul McCartney. He also worked with the likes of George Barnes, Stephane Grappelli, Frank Sinatra, the Tonight Show band, and countless others, and enjoyed a long reign among the most in-demand studio musicians.

Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli has been part of the Highlights In Jazz series from the get-go: Not only did this consummate pro perform at the very first Highlights In Jazz concert, Bucky actually encouraged Jack Kleinsinger to get into producing events in the first place.

In the early 1970s, Kleinsinger, a former assistant attorney general of the State of New York, practiced law all day, then spent many an evening at jazz clubs. “That’s how I calmed down at the end of the day,” Jack notes. Bucky advised him to “rent a hall, put on a concert, and get it out of your system,” the producer recalls. Producing his first Highlights In Jazz show had the opposite effect on him, and 46 years later, he and Bucky are both still at it. Not only was Bucky Pizzarelli the first featured artist, “He’s one of the artists I’ve presented most often,” Jack declares.

Whether the guitarist is focusing on the music of Jerome Kern or Duke Ellington, paying tribute to six-string legend Freddie Green or collaborating with members of his talented family, such as son John Pizzarelli, listeners can count on Bucky Pizzarelli to give his all each and every time. He also radiates cool, whether he’s describing showing up for a recording date with Miles Davis or playing ukulele for Tiny Tim’s wedding on The Tonight Show, it’s all in a day’s work for this seasoned guitar star, who has called playing for an audience “the ultimate pleasure.”

Joining the guitar maestro on stage at 2018’s Highlights In Jazz season opener will be fellow guitarist Russell Malone, a six-string master in his own right. Russell credits Wes Montgomery and George Benson as early influences, but has such a distinctive style you’d never mistake him for anyone else. Russell has released more than a dozen albums as a leader, including 2017’s highly praised Time for the Dancers. Russell has proved time and again that he knows his way around standards and originals. Besides fronting his own bands, the versatile guitarist has performed with Ron Carter, Sonny Rollins, Dianne Reeves and other jazz icons.

Featured bassist Martin Pizzarelli proves the apple didn’t fall far from the talented family tree: He is Bucky Pizzarelli’s son and renowned guitarist John Pizzarelli’s brother.

“Bucky and Russell have played duets before, they’re both comfortable with it, they’re both so versatile. And, of course, Bucky and Martin have played together countless times,” Jack shares.

Singer/guitarist/composer Allan Harris has joined the lineup for this gala event. The talented New Yorker has 11 albums under his belt, including the recently released Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Jukebox Redux), a follow-up to his brilliant 2015 release Black Radio Jukebox. With these critically acclaimed and popular recordings, Allan presents the music he fell in love with growing up in Brooklyn, and while exploring the rich Harlem cultural scene. The exciting blend of swinging jazz, R&B, ballads, rock, blues, and Brazilian music was the soundtrack of his youth, and it continues to resonate with listeners today. His repertoire includes original compositions, classics from the Great American Songbook, and songs made famous by a such varied musical icons as Nat King Cole, Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles. Regardless of the source of the song, Allan has a knack of stamping each with his signature sound. He appears at Highlights In Jazz fresh from an Off-Broadway run of Cross that River, the rarely told saga of black cowboys in the American West, for which Allan co-wrote the book and composed the music.

As with all Highlights In Jazz concerts, the 46th anniversary gala will include a surprise special guest. At least one or two top-flight jazz stars are scheduled for unannounced appearances at each concert in the Highlights In Jazz season. “It’s always a well-kept secret, and it’s always a lot of fun,” producer Jack Kleinsinger notes.

Sometimes the special guests are a surprise even for the producer. The long-running concert series is a favorite among players, so it’s not unusual to see some big names in the audience; some of them head for the stage as they get excited and inspired by what they’re hearing, and make their own musical statement. Plus, there’s an ongoing tradition of musicians who are free for the evening volunteering their services. “Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Carmen McRae, if they were in town they’d call me and make last-minute arrangements to show up,” Jack recalls.

Listen to Randy Cohen’s Interview with Jack Kleinsinger

During his 45 years producing the concert series Highlights in Jazz, he has gotten to know many brilliant musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once came by the house and played for his cat. But is jazz, if not dead then relegated to a museum piece? The future of an art form: at BMCC-Tribeca Performing Arts Center with music from Nicki Denner and Anton Denner, both very much alive.

Critics love MJ’s new CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a

calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while

giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful,
and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.” —Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and

overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be
is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the

less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly

delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!
–C. Michael Bailey

Wonder and innocence, gaudiness and cheer: can it be any surprise that the jazz drummer Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays?” – The New York Times

Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O has been delighting audiences since they first gathered in 2009 for a concert in Brooklyn. The response to the music was so positive they decided to gather on a snowy May day to make a record. Their 2010 release on Palmetto Records, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O, garnered great critical acclaim including a 4-star review in DownBeat magazine where they proclaimed, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O provides Yuletide greetings so eloquent and mind-bending even the nastiest of Scrooges will want to pay attention.”

The Tree-O’s fun-filled concert presentation, which include films, lights and decorations, has allowed the Tree-O to tour each December since 2011 throughout the US and Canada. The band’s performance on the NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert catapulted them to cult-status among holiday music aficianodos. They now have established annual gigs in NYC at the Jazz Standard ( 6th Year), in Chicago at the Green Mill as well as a bi-annual gig in St.Louis at Jazz at the Bistro. Part of the allure of the concert performances are the guests that may appear to aid in spreading Christmas cheer. Over the years such luminaries as Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Esperanza Spaulding, Marshall Allen, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, Jeff Hamilton, Cecile McClorin Salvant, Christian McBride, Janis Siegal, Dawn Clement, Duchess, Aaron Diehl, Jimmy Bosch and Bobby Sanabria and many others have joined the Tree-O for sonic merriment. Comedian Amy Schumer so loved the band at their 2015 appearance in St.Louis, she and her crew even joined in on the fun. It was wild!

The Tree-O features multi-reed master Jeff Lederer who has released many celebrated recordings as a leader and once met Charlie Chaplin as a young child. The bassist Paul Sikivie has been a mainstay in the bands of Cecile McClorin Salvant and Aaron Diehl and hails from Gainesville, Florida– the birthplace of Gatorade. Celebrated drummer Matt Wilson, one of jazz music’s most beloved ambassadors, has two different sized feet. Left-9 Right 10 1/2.

Hot House Jazz Guide Announcement

Hot House Jazz Fans Decision Award Winners
In Concert, Thursday, December 14
Champian Fulton, “King” Solomon Hicks, Giacomo Gates
And Antoinette Montague to Perform a Jazzy Christmas Show

The Bickford Theatre and Hot House Jazz Magazine salute the 2017 Fans Decision Jazz Awards with a holiday concert featuring Female Jazz Vocalist winner Champian Fulton and Male Rising Star winner “King” Solomon Hicks on Thursday, December 14. Joining the young stars will be the celebrated emcee for the awards ceremony, singer Antoinette Montague and a special surprise guest, Giacomo Gates, the winner of this year’s Male Jazz Vocalist Award.
The gala awards ceremony takes place in October each year thanks to Hot House Jazz Magazine, the oldest jazz publication in New York, and the Metropolitan Room, one of New York’s top Jazz Cabaret Clubs. This year’s event was held at The Triad and honored several legends of jazz including impresario George Wein and longtime greats Roy Haynes and Harold Mabern.

Internationally acclaimed pianist and vocalist Champian Fulton was the winner in the Female Vocalist category but was unable to attend the October ceremony. Recognized as Rising Jazz Star by Downbeat Magazine, Champian is a mainstay on the New York jazz scene. She has released eight recordings as a leader including her newest CD “Christmas with Champian” which received 4-stars from both Downbeat Magazine and All About Jazz. The concert will feature Champian and her quartet playing selections from her new Christmas CD.

Only 22, guitarist “King” Solomon Hicks effortlessly merges jazz and blues, opening for blues superstars like Joe Bonamassa and then performing with jazz stars such as Tony Bennett and Lee Ritenhour. His extraordinary talent has received coverage in a wide range of publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Daily News, and on PBS. And he has become a popular headliner at Shanghai Jazz in Madison. He will perform both as a solo artist and with the Champian Fulton Quartet.

Raised in Newark, singer Antoinette Montague is no stranger to New Jersey audiences. Drawing on a repertoire of standards, swing, blues, bebop and storytelling, she captivates listeners with her passion and her wonderful voice. Not only is she regularly applauded for her singing, she is also a fervent champion for young musicians. Her Jazz Women to the Rescue Foundation works to provide musical instruments and art supplies to schools in communities that don’t have music or art programs. And her high-energy shows always bring an audience to its feet. She has been the emcee for the Hot House Jazz Magazine Awards Ceremony for the past three years.

The Bickford Theatre and Hot House Jazz Magazine have just announced that the amazing jazz singer
Giacomo Gates has been added to the evening’s line-up. The winner of this year’s Fans Decision Jazz Award for Best Male Vocalist, Gates is one of the most popular performers on the scene today. He appears at major jazz clubs around the world including New York’s Birdland, Blues Alley, Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club, Scullers, and The Jazz Bakery. His CDs earn critical acclaim and top radio playlists. Although coming to the music business later in life, he won Downbeat Magazine’s Critic’s Poll for Rising Star Male Vocalist in 2012 and is a regular at major jazz festivals every summer.

Gwen Kelley, the publisher for Hot House, promises a great evening. “We are thrilled to partner with the Bickford Theatre to bring this entertaining evening of Christmas music from our Fans Decision Jazz Award Winners. We will also be sharing film clips from this year’s awards ceremony since it is almost impossible to get a ticket to the star-studded event. We hope our New Jersey friends will join us for what will become an annual holiday concert at the Bickford.”
Tickets for the Hot House Jazz Magazine Awards Concert are $17 for museum members, $18 in advance, and $20 at the door. The show will be on Thursday, December 14, at 7:30 PM and all seats are reserved. Tickets may be purchased online at morrismuseum.org/jazz-showcase, by phone at (973) 971-3706, or in person at the Bickford Theatre Box Office. The Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre is located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown, NJ, and offers free parking and full accessibility. Box office hours for phone sales are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Walk-up hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Duchess!

Sure-footed swing, sweet-toned harmony, and ever-insouciant charm are embodied in the new jazz vocal trio Duchess, featuring notable New York singers Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou. In a remarkably short amount of time, Duchess has developed a major reputation as a leading vocal trio. Inspired by the Boswell Sisters and the Andrews Sisters, Duchess boasts tight vocal harmonies that are both technically challenging and easy on the ears. Rather than performing straight takes on the classics, their arrangements are uniquely tailored for their voices and 21st-century tastes. Duchess is also well known for their sense of humor and playfulness, so come ready to let loose and have a good time.

Paul Winter’s Winter Solstice Celebration embraces the spirit of the holidays within the extraordinary acoustics of the world’s largest cathedral. This multimedia event will feature the 10-member Paul Winter Consort, gospel singer Theresa Thomason, the 25 dancers and drummers of the Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and special guests, the 15-member Pletenitsa Balkan Choir.

Paul Winter’s Winter Solstice Celebration has become New York’s favorite holiday alternative to the Nutcracker and Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular. This event offers a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals, when people gathered together on the longest night of the year to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year.

The Cast of Characters:

Theresa Thomason

The Consort’s beloved gospel singer will be performing for the first time
a song new to her
and to the Solstice event,

The Pletenitsa Balkan Choir, directed by Christiane Karam

This 15-voice ensemble sings in this fabled tradition of the Bulgarian choirs. This will be their New York debut.

The Forces of Nature Dance Theatre

The 35 dancers and drummers
of this extraordinary troupe
draw from both West African and contemporary genres. They will be presenting a new work choreographed by founder/director Abdel Salaam.

Paul McCandless

The Consort’s double-reed master will be featured this year playing music from his new album “Morning Sun.”

Back in September Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion played Smoke Jazz Club on the Upper West Side for the first time.  Sammy’s special brand of sophisticated Latin jazz mixed with his ebullient sense of humor made the evening a wonderful success.

For those who missed the show and for those who came and loved it there’s another opportunity to experience Sammy and his band in this great venue.  Plan on coming for dinner — Smoke has a great kitchen.

The title of this album says it all. The English translation, Speak Sweet, is a reference to all the dulcet-toned saxophonists who fueled Gil Spitzer’s imagination as a developing alto saxophonist growing up in the East Bronx. The names Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges immediately come to mind, and Spitzer is right in that number with his beautiful tone and lyrical approach in what, amazingly, is his debut recording at the age of 75! But as Brazilian bassist and producer of this session, Nilson Matta, says of Spitzer, “You don’t have to be any certain age to play music. Anytime is about time.”

Matta met the saxophonist at his Samba Meets Jazz Summer Music Camp in Bar Harbor, Maine and the friendship deepened when the bassist invited Spitzer to an international SMJ camp in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Taken by the altoist’s sound, Matta later invited him to sit in with his group on gigs at Birdland back in New York City. “He’s got that lyrical thing, which is very charming,” said the bassist of Spitzer, “and also nice tone, great taste. He embraces all of those things and he plays with a lot of spirit.”

For Falando Docemente, Matta assembled a like-minded crew of Brazilian compatriots — guitarist Chico Pinheiro, drummer Mauricio Zottarelli and percussionist Fernando Saci — to provide an authentic vibe on several alluring bossa novas. Saxophonist Harry Allen, a guest faculty member at Matta’s SMJ camp, was paired with Spitzer on Hank Mobley’s hard bop anthem This I Dig Of You, the luxurious ballad Early Autumn and Spitzer’s lone original here, Blues for Harry A”. Rising star pianist-composer Julian Shore was recruited by Matta to write string quartet arrangements on The Very Thought Of You, Nature Boy and Sonny Rollins’ Valse Hot. And Spitzer responds in each setting with authority, clarity and a beautiful singing quality.

The spirit of his musical hero Stan Getz hovers over much of this session and is especially apparent on a beautiful bossa reading of George Gershwin’s Embraceable You and Jobim’s classic Triste. “Interestingly, my first lessons were at a studio in the East Bronx where Stan Getz took music lessons,” Spitzer recalls. “I never met him there, he was already gone, but his photograph was on the wall with some other star pupils there who achieved success. And I did take lessons with the same teacher that he had for a time, Bill Shiner. I was in junior high school at the time so this goes back quite a ways. But I remember Bill Shiner’s Music Studio on Southern Blvd. and Boston Rd. in the Bronx, right under the elevated train. The studio was one flight up and it always kind of interfered with your lessons to some degree when a train came by. But that’s how I learned how to play the saxophone.”

Another significant influence on Spitzer then and on his debut recording is Nat “King” Cole, the great pianist-vocalist who came up swinging with his trio in the late ‘30s and early ‘40s before morphing into a romantic balladeer (gaining a much wider audience in the process) in the post-World War II years. “My inspiration on both ‘The Very Thought Of You’ and ‘Nature Boy’ was Nat Cole,” he explains. “While it’s hard to convey his voice through an alto saxophone, that sound was in my head and what I was feeling when we recorded those two songs.” He also points to a Getz recording of “Nature Boy” with strings from a 1960 Verve album, Cool Velvet, as another inspiration for his reading of this tune.

Spitzer pays tribute to alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, whose tone was once described as “the sound of a dry martini,” on a relaxed reading of the title track from Desmond’s 1964 album, Bossa Antigua, which also featured guitar great Jim Hall. “It was my way of connecting with him and paying some respect to his sound,” says Spitzer. “In many ways he was maybe a bit underrated. He wasn’t a fantastic player in terms of technique but he had a sound, he had a vision, he had a lyrical sense, and he stuck with it. And to my ears, it was beautiful, it was creative, it was different than some of the other people who were around at the time.”

The supportive rhythm tandem of Matta and Zottarelli captures a quintessentially loose Brazilian feel on that soothing Desmond number and also on Matta’s relaxed This Is For Luisa, written for his wife. Guitarist Pinheiro solos persuasively on both of those engaging offerings.

Fellow saxophonists Spitzer and Allen display an easy interplay on Mobley’s swinger This I Dig Of You and also on Johnny Mercer’s “Early Autumn.” “The feeling was to have a kind of a dialogue together,” says Spitzer of his pairing with Allen. “And even though Harry has a more emphatic sound, not only because it’s a tenor but also because he’s such a strong player, there is still a kind of a sweetness and a communication happening. There’s a civility to it. It’s not one voice putting down the other but rather a kind of communicating,”

Spitzer and Allen also engage in some spirited exchanges of eights with drummer Steve Johns on “This I Dig Of You” and they create some intriguing harmonies through the head of Spitzer’s “Blues for Harry A,” a Monkish ditty written for the saxophonist’s son. “I love Harry’s playing, I like where his head’s at in terms of his sound and his feel and his freedom and his vocabulary, which is incredible. I’m very happy that he agreed to do this project and his participation on ‘Blues for Harry A’ made it more special for me. My son’s middle name is Aaron, so he’s Harry A. And Harry Allen is also Harry A. So it was kind of a nice coincidence.”

The closer, a rich reading of Rollins’ Valse Hot, opens with Shore cleverly alluding to the bridge of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in his string arrangement before the full band kicks off the theme of that buoyant jazz waltz.
There’s something sweet to savor on each track here. “Falando Docemente means ‘Speak Sweet’ in Portuguese,” explains Spitzer, “and that was really my idea for the theme of this CD — a romantic expression as well as a communication in a kind of civil and sweet way, referencing to some degree the great saxophonists and vocalists of the past.”

By referencing such greats as Getz, Desmond and Cole, you really can’t go wrong. Spitzer and his copacetic crew do justice to those jazz legends on this highly appealing (and long overdue) outing. — Bill Milkowski

Award winning soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom returns to Cornelia Street Cafe with her trio to perform songs from their critically acclaimed release “Early Americans” and beyond. “Early Americans” (Sono Luminus) was nominated for a 2018 Grammy for best surround sound album.  Longtime band-mates Mark Helias (bass) and Bobby Previte (drums) join Bloom for an evening of high wire improvisation over the groove. Don’t miss these fearless American originals.

Celebrating The Release Of His New CD

The Jazz Nativity Bob Kindred Memorial Fund

Jazz Nativity<!–

Dear Friends of the Jazz Nativity,

It was the summer after I met Bob that the Rev. John Garcia Gensel asked me to write The Jazz Nativity. It was Bob’s deep, passionate sound I heard in my head when I decided to start the show in the dark with Bob on his tenor saxophone hauntingly playing “Silent Night.” And it was a song he wrote for a camp show, for which I rewrote the lyric, that became its title, “Bending Towards the Light.”

Bob’s musical contribution to the show was great. To help keep The Jazz Nativity going and to keep his spirit and love for it alive, last year I created THE JAZZ NATIVITY BOB KINDRED MEMORIAL FUND through our 501(c) (3).

Please consider a tax deductible gift in Bob’s honor and send your check payable to:

JAZZ AT KITANO January 12 & 13, 2018

The ROGER KELLAWAY Trio
Special Guest – Brazilian Vocalist Téka

An evening of “cool jazz” and lush Brazilian music
Jay Leonhart (bass) & Roni Ben-Hur (guitar)
David Silliman (percussion)
Presented by Pat Philips-Stratta

Roger Kellaway Grammy award winner and Academy Award nominated pianist/composer, has recorded more than 250 albums. He’s worked with a who’s who of the music world: Ellington to Elvis, Carmen McRae, Joni Mitchel, Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones and Yo-Yo Ma, to name a few. He was Musical Director for Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Van Morrison, and for major Jazz events at Carnegie Hall, including the 80th Birthday Tribute to Stephane Grappelli and the Oscar Peterson Tribute.

Téka is an artist with roots firmly planted in the traditions of Brazilian music…the Samba, Bosa Nova & Choro. From an early age, she fell under the spell of American Jazz and began soaking up the sounds of the Jazz greats of the day. Today, her music has become a fusion of the sensual rhythms of Brazil with the sophistication and improvisation of Jazz, which she calls “New Bosa”. She has performed and recorded with Brazilian legends Gilberto Gil, Flora Purim and Airto Moreia.

The combination of Kellaway and Téka, with Jay Leonhart on Bass, Roni Ben-Hur on Guitar, and David Silliman on percussion is destined to create an evening of unforgettable music!

From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends’
shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites

Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this brand-new CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.

Equally comfortable on both trumpet and flugelhorn, leader Chris Pasin has proved himself among the most versatile of musicians. Besides fronting his own bands, he’s been a mainstay of ensembles led by the likes of Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin, George Russell, and Brother Jack McDu . Pasin has also appeared with legendary gures including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Ray Charles, to name a few.

For Baby, It’s Cold Outside, Pasin has assembled a stellar ensemble of some of the most in-demand musicians on the New York jazz scene. Among them: pianist Armen Donelian (Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D’Rivera); bassists Ira Coleman (Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Herbie Hancock) and Rich Syracuse (Mose Allison, Bernard Purdy, Kurt Elling); drummer Je Siegel (Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan); singer Patricia Dalton Fennell (Dave Holland, Giacomo Gates, Pete Levin); and guitarist Peter Einhorn (Joe Lovano, Placido Domingo, Jim Hall).

Highlights from Baby, It’s Cold Outside include:
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”: Here’s a subtle, sensitive and understated version of a classic that steers clear of the overly sentimental, right from Donelian’s heart-felt piano opener. “We Three Kings”: Uptempo and bursting with energy, the band brings great drive and brilliant feeling to this beloved carol, which features an excellent solo from leader Pasin. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”: Check out the sexy and playful collaboration between Pasin and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell. The twosome demonstrate their wit and camaraderie as they work their seductive skills on the lyrics. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”: A very welcome new take on a traditional tune turns it into a cooker; the great rhythmic drive makes it downright danceable. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”: Pasin and Einhorn shine on solos in this unique treatment of a 1940s-vintage hit.

Pasin and friends’ fresh take on the greatest songs of the season celebrate the beloved classics in an original and vastly appealing style. Listeners will enjoy old favorites in a new way this holiday season, thanks to the great renditions performed by this talented and creative ensemble.
