Edmar Castaneda ~ Electric Harp  — solo concert
Friday, February 16, 2018
8pm
Kaplan Hall
Orange Bank & Trust Co Great Room 101
SUNY Orange, Newburgh

A native of Bogotá, Colombia, harpist Edmar Castaneda, is a master at skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit from his blue harp. It is, indeed, a Columbian harp which is based on the diatonic scale of seven rather than the chromatic twelve notes.

Since his move to the U.S. in 1994, he has quite literally taken New York and the world stage by storm with the sheer force of his virtuosic command of the harp, revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider an instrument commonly relegated to the “unusual category.”

States the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (newspaper): “The Colombian plays the harp like hardly anyone else on earth. His hands, seemingly powered by two different people, produce a totally unique, symphonic fullness of sound, a rapid-fire of chords, balance of melodic figures and drive, served with euphoric Latin American rhythms, and the improvisatory freedom of a trained jazz musician…captivating virtuosity, but in no way only virtuosity for its own sake.” He and his harp become one and his joy makes the music he produces even more engaging.

Edmar Castaneda ~ Electric Harp will be in solo concert on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 8pm in the Orange Bank & Trust Co Great Room 101, Kaplan Hall which is located at the corner of Grand & First Streets on the Newburgh campus of SUNY Orange. Free, secure parking is available in the Kaplan Hall parking garage entered at 73 First St.

Tickets can be purchased online anytime at www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml $12 adults; $10 senior citizens, faculty, staff, and alumni; plus a $ 2.50 online service charge for each online ticket; and free for all students. Free student admission is available only at the door. For on-site purchase, the box office opens at 7pm before the performance.

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

My name is Jason Kao Hwang. I am the jazz violinist, composer and leader of Burning Bridge, an octet of Chinese and Western instruments founded in 2009.

I am raising $6000 by March 1 to pay for the musicians of Burning Bridge, rehearsal studio rentals, and transportation expenses to record my composition, Blood. This is non-commercial music that can only be produced with your help. Your support will allow us to record this Spring. The CD would be released in the fall of 2018.

The composition Blood, which utilizes improvisation and written score, meditates upon the emotional traumas of war retained within the body as unspoken vibrations that reverberate throughout communities and across generations. Through Blood the violence of deeply held memories are not relived but transposed into our sound. Blood in our sound rises within our voice to protest and defy humanity’s constant state of war. Blood is liberated into our song. Blood regenerates and flows into wholeness and strength.

I have worked with most of the players for over a dozen years.  Our long history together contributes mightily to the music. Our first CD, Burning Bridge (2012, Innova) was chosen as one of the Best Jazz Recordings of 2012 by Kevin Whitehead (NPR, Fresh Air); Ed Hazell (Jazziz), Robert Iannapollo (NYC Jazz Record), Steve Koenig (Acoustic Levitation), Giuseppe Segala (All About Jazz, Italy) and Lloyd Sachs (JazzTimes).

Blood premiered at the Edgefest (Ann Arbor, MI) in 2016, and was also performed at the 2017 Vision Festival (NYC). The music and the band is ready to record!

Click on the Burning Bridge GoFundMe Campaign to learn more and make a contribution!  Music from our first CD is in the video.

Please share this e-mail and campaign with your friends and family, via e-mail, Facebook, or other social media.

Thank you for your help!

Best wishes,

Jason Kao Hwang

DownBeat Editors Pick January 2018

By Ed Enright

Steve Slagle dedicates each track on his new album to people, places and things that have served as sources of artistic inspiration during his five-decade career as a saxophonist/flutist, composer, educator, arranger and bandleader on the New York scene. Dedication starts with a kick as Slagle (on alto), pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Bill Stewart and percussionist Roman Diaz conjure the essence of Sonny Rollins on Slagle’s “Sun Song,” a summery blowing vehicle based on a buoyant calypso-like groove. Guitarist Dave Stryker, a frequent touring/recording collaborator with Slagle, joins the group on the angular and driving “Niner” (dedicated to bassist Steve Swallow), and five more tracks. Stryker’s presence on Dedication is deeply felt, notably on the Brazil-dedicated bossa nova tune “Triste Beleza” playing nylon-string acoustic, as well as on his own “Corazon” (dedicated to Joe Zawinul), a ballad that flows with resonant alto vibrato, shimmering brushes, simple bass line movement and rubato strums of cleanly amplified electric guitar. Other subjects of Slagle’s dedication include Jackie McLean (the conga-driven “Opener”), Wayne Shorter (his “Charcoal Blues”), painter Marc Chagall (the guitar/soprano sax dream “Watching Over”), Slagle’s daughter Sophia (the playful, odd-metered swinger “Sofi”) and swing itself (the uptempo romp “Major In Come”). It all adds up to an enjoyable and meaningful collection of fresh, straightahead jazz from some of the genre’s best—and most dedicated—practitioners.

The Mike Stern Band featuring Teymur Phell and Richie Morales will headline the 7th Les Paul Festival Concert at Ramapo College on Saturday, February 24, 2018 in the Berrie Center’s Sharp Theater at 8:00 p.m.  The annual festival celebrates Mahwah resident Les Paul’s innovative spirit as a musician and technologist by hosting a week of guest speakers and workshops for Ramapo’s music students culminating in a concert for the college and regional community. The Les Paul Festival is presented by the Ramapo College Music Program, the Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts, the School of Contemporary Arts, the student-run Ramapo Music Club, and the Mahwah Museum.

Mike Stern is regarded as one of the true guitar greats to a generation of contemporary jazz guitar aficionados. A player of remarkable facility, his searing lines are informed mainly by bebop and the blues while also carrying a rock-tinged intensity. Stern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early 1980s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then he has released 17 recordings as a leader, six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards.  His latest album is titled “Trip.”  Stern has also played with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jaco Pastorius, Michael and Randy Brecker, Eric Johnson, Bela Fleck, and numerous other major jazz musicians.  Stern was presented with Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award in 2012. Ramapo College is thrilled and honored to have Mike Stern headline the 7th Les Paul Festival, during which he will also provide a workshop for Ramapo music students.

Drummer Richie Morales, a native of New York City, is a versatile player who has performed and recorded with a wide range of contemporary artists: Mike Stern, The Brecker Brothers, Spyro Gyra, Grover Washington Jr., Al DiMeola, Stevie Wonder, Carly Simon, Dianne Reeves, saxophonist Bill Evans, bassist Victor Bailey, Michael Franks, George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra, Grammy award winning vibraphonist Dave Samuels, Gato Barbieri, Dave Valentin, Ray Barretto, and Herbie Mann. He also leads his own group performing a mixture of Jazz standards and original music. Richie has been a member of the jazz faculty at Purchase College Conservatory of Music SUNY since 2000. He has also taught at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program.

Bassist Teymur Phell moved to New York in 2011 and has since built a reputation as a vibrant and virtuosic player. He has performed with Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Danielia Cotton, Alex Young, Leni Stern, Kevin Salem, Lafayette Harris, and Oz Noy. Born in Azerbaijan to a family of professional musicians — his grandmother Elmira Nazirova was a celebrated classical pianist — Teymur studied classical bass at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and toured with Palestinian singer Amal Murkus.

Concert tickets are $30/27/24, and $8 for Ramapo students with ID. No discounts. Contact the Berrie Center Box Office: (201) 684-7844 or visit

“….Overall, the album casts a warm, clear glow, with plenty of cohesive interplay between Stryker, organist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. While influenced by many guitarists, Stryker remains true to his own vision. Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell may be touchstones, but Stryker forges his own sound throughout.” – Martin Kasdan

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

During his 45 years producing the concert series Highlights in Jazz, he has gotten to know many brilliant musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once came by the house and played for his cat. But is jazz, if not dead then relegated to a museum piece? The future of an art form: at BMCC-Tribeca Performing Arts Center with music from Nicki Denner and Anton Denner, both very much alive.

An Intimate Acoustic Evening featuring compositions from the new album release “Opus”, Piazzolla, Lennon & McCartney & Di Meola
Saturday, Feb. 17 at 8pm

Al Di Meola’s ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, three gold albums and more than six million in record sales worldwide.

A bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner (winning more awards than any guitarist living or dead), and prolific composer, he has amassed over 30 albums as a leader while collaborating on more than a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty.

Tickets & Info

The Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is dedicated to celebrating the compositions of classic and contemporary jazz women. In their swinging, entertaining, and witty performances, they present the work of composers and lyricists such as Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Peggy Lee, Abbey Lincoln, Patricia Barber, Nelly McKay and many more, as well as their own compositions and collaborations.

Vocalist MJ Territo, the ensemble’s founder, says, “One day I happened to notice that women had written quite a few of my favorite songs. And I began to notice common themes. Sure, there are love songs–love is one of the great subjects of song. But there are also songs about resilience and self-reliance; songs about the power and wonder of nature; songs that cross the borders of our wide world; songs of family and friendship.” Territo also thought it would be fun to play these tunes with a group of crackerjack female musicians, so she put together the band and they began to build a repertoire which is now more than fifty songs strong.

The quartet’s critically-acclaimed album, “Ladies Day” was released in August 2017 with a CD release celebration at Club Bonafide.

“MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing.” – Scott Yanow, Downbeat

“Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!” – C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz

SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs Presents Bent Duo on Sunday, February 11th 3pm William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall

SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs Presents Bent Duo on Sunday, February 11th 3pm William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall

February 9, 2018

To: Listings/Critics/Features
From: Jazz Promo Services
www.jazzpromoservices.com

Bent Duo is the name of a two-man ensemble that explores chamber music for piano and percussion. Performers Bill Solomon and David Friend join forces to present contemporary classics for this instrumentation, to work with emerging composers on new works, and to investigate new ways of presenting chamber music. They enjoy playing together and their knowledge and enthusiasm for their instruments in relation to the repertoire makes the performance both enjoyable and educational.

Come to the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall for a concert presented by  Bent Duo on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 3pm. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the box office the day of the performance beginning one hour before the performance or online anytime at
www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml plus a $ 2.50 service charge for each online ticket; and free for all students. Free student admission is available only at the box office.

Composers featured on this program include legends of the twentieth century including        Steve Reich, Henry Cowell, and Arvo Pärt; up-and-coming young composers from the USA and abroad Hannah Lash, Ted Hearne, Mayke Nas, and Scott Wollschleger, as well as a new arrangement of piano music by SUNY Orange’s music professor, Chris Parker.

In addition, Solomon and Friend will give a master class on Friday, February 9 starting at 11am in Orange Hall Room 23 entitled Bent Duo: Music Outside the Box. The class is free and open to the public.

Bill Solomon received his DMA from The Hartt School, the performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford. David Friend holds a BM and MM from Manhattan School of Music and is all but a dissertation away from his DMA from Cornell University.

Based in New York City, Solomon and Friend are especially well-known for their performances of contemporary repertoire. They are also an interesting reflection of each other. Bill Solomon is a professional percussionist who seriously studied the piano, while David Friend is a professional pianist who seriously studied percussion. The interesting overlap of their training and the natural commonalities between keyboard instruments and the percussion batterie serve as a jumping-off point for Bent Duo to not only champion the existing repertoire for the underserved instrumentation of the piano-percussion duo, but also to reexamine the conventions of writing and performing chamber music for these instruments. Friend has played at SUNY Orange on three other occasions.

John di Martino – Piano
Nicki Parrott – Bass
Drums – Vince Cherico

“Vignola, who possesses jaw dropping technique, wears his influences on the tip of his pick”
– Mike Joyce, Washington Post

“Vignola returned on Sweet Georgia Brown, exhibiting his acoustic mastery in exhilarating single string runs, complex flurries and
astounding full register riffs. When speed and clarity were demanded, Vignola stunned.”
– DownBeat

It ’s been almost a year since Top Guitarist Frank Vignola catapulted into a tree from an off – road – vehicle in a tragic accident that nearly took his life. After being air – lifted to a renowned N.Y. area trauma center, Frank’s family learned of his extensive injuries which included four broken ribs, a broken clavicle, shoulder (in two places), and arm, which has since required multiple surgeries. Additionally , Vignola suffered two collapsed lungs and massive internal bleeding.

Enduring a long but steady recovery, Frank ret urns to the stage in collaboration with the John di Martino Trio performing great American popular songs by Gershwin, Porter, Van Heusen, Berlin, Bernstein and more. He is grateful, and he’s excited to be back to introduce Frank Vignola with the John di Martino Trio.

Frank Vignola, born December 30th, 1965, is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar le gend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Fi ve Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s stellar technique explains why the N ew York Times deemed him “one of the brightest stars of the guitar”.

John di Martino is a jazz pianist, arranger and producer, based in New York City. He has been described as a “shape – shifter”, for his creativity across musical genres. “The Hudson Jazz Festival has been a long time in the making! I first moved to Germantown in 1971 and I became a contributor to the Hudson Opera House (now Hudson Hall) when it opened in 1992. And here we are in 2018, and I’m proud to support the Hudson Jazz Festival because it enriches our community and makes it a better place to live.” – Sonny Rollins

Hudson, NY – January 12, 2018:  Hudson Hall is proud to announce the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival (HJF), Friday February 16, Saturday February 17 and Sunday February 18, 2018, at Hudson Hall’s historic 1855 theater. Curated by noted Hudson-based jazz pianist, Armen Donelian, the festival highlights talent with musical influences that span the globe.

“I see this festival as a rare opportunity both to raise regional jazz awareness as well as to reward loyal jazz fans with a first-rate presentation”, says Donelian. “We are extremely proud to grace this beautiful venue with an exceptional lineup of world-class performers. Sit back and enjoy this cross-section of today’s amazing jazz talent, from emerging artists to established jazz masters.”

The festival kicks off with international flair on Friday evening, February 16, 2018 with the entrancing sounds of The Ara Dinkjian Quartet, an instrumental collaboration rooted in Turkish, Armenian and Macedonian Roma music headed by world-renowned oud player Ara Dinkjian and featuring award-winning clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski. Armen Donelian opens for the quartet with a solo piano set of Armenian-inspired romances from his Sunnyside EP, Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors.

On Saturday, February 17 at 7pm, one of a kind jazz matriarch Sheila Jordan and vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger Dominique Eade bring their world-class talent to the Hudson Hall stage, following an afternoon of jazz solo piano immersion with 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, hitting the keys ahead of critically acclaimed NYC jazz scene favorite, Aaron Goldberg and young lion James Francies at 3pm. Festival audiences can then catch a free screening of director Stephanie Castillo’s award-winning portrait of the life and premature loss of a great American jazz talent, Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song (2016) at 5:00pm.

Students are invited to a multi-generational hands-on jazz improvisation workshop on Sunday morning at 11am taught by pianist Armen Donelian and saxophonist Marc Mommaas, co-founders of Hudson Jazzworks. The festival then comes to a fiery close at 3pm with the wild and spontaneous Quarteto Moderno. Infusing Brazilian samba with contemporary jazz and chamber music, the quartet is led by guitarist and musicologist, Richard Boukas, and features clarinetist Lucas Pino, bassist Gustavo Amarante, and drummer Muricio Zottarelli.

Hudson Hall is located at 327 Warren Street, Hudson, NY. Tickets start at $25, with festival Weekend Passes available for $90, which includes priority entry and seating to every performance and event. Online ticket purchases can be made at hudsonhall.org, or by calling (518) 822-1438.

Armen Donelian, piano

A king of the keys performs the ‘King of Songs’. “A pianist with a crystalline touch” (the New York Times), Armen Donelian delves into his roots with his “beautifully elusive” (Downbeat) arrangements of poetic works by the 18th century Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova, whose name means ‘King of Songs’ in Persian. A professor for 32 years at the New School College of the Performing Arts, 2002 Fulbright Scholar and a widely-read author, Donelian has performed alongside jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker and Lionel Hampton and is the curator of the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival.

The Ara Dinkjian Quartet featuring Ismail Lumanovski
Ara Dinkjian, oud
Ismail Lumanovski, clarinet
Pablo Vergara, keyboard
Engin Gunaydin, percussion

Not bound by a single tradition, The Ara Dinkjian Quartet encompasses the dance beat of the Balkans alongside elements of jazz, rock and classical music. Composed of four extraordinary musicians, the quartet features “brilliant and fearless…clarinetist” (the New York Times) Ismail Lumanovski, keyboard player Pablo Vergara, percussionist Engin Gunaydin and leader Ara Dinkjian, one of the world’s top oud players and founder of the groundbreaking instrumental groups Night Ark and The Secret Trio.

SOLO PIANO SUMMIT: 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, Aaron Goldberg and James Francies
Saturday, February 17 at 3pm

Tickets: $25

For lovers of jazz piano, a rare chance to hear three great soloists in one afternoon. 2018 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award winner, JoAnne Brackeen is widely considered one of the “most celebrated jazz pianists of all time” (the Boston Globe), while Aaron Goldberg has made his name as one of jazz’s most compelling young pianists with his “quick witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic,” both as a bandleader and collaborator with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Guillermo Klein. Also joining this afternoon of unadulterated jazz piano immersion is young pianist/composer James Francies (24 Seven Artist Development), whose inquisitive mind, synesthesia (the ability to hear in colors) and distinct melodic styling has seen him tour internationally with Jeff “Tain” Watts, Chris Dave and Drumhedz and appear with The Roots, Nas, Jadakiss, and Raekwon (Wu Tang Clan) during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend.

SCREENING: Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song
Directed by Stephanie Castillo (2016, 97min)
Saturday, February 17 at 5pm

Free. Reservations at hudsonhall.org

Thomas Chapin was described by the New York Times as “one of the more exuberant saxophonists and bandleaders… one of the few to exist in both the worlds of the ‘downtown’ experimentalist scene and mainstream jazz.” Already a virtuoso, Chapin was nearing the pinnacle of his meteoric rise when leukemia claimed him at the age of 40 in 1998. This award-winning documentary draws an intimate portrait of this musical explorer who challenged stylistic boundaries and dissolved distinctions between sound and music. Director Stephanie Castillo will be in attendance.

TAKE TWO: Sheila Jordan and Dominique Eade
Saturday, February 17 at 7pm

Tickets: $35
Sheila Jordan, vocals, with Cameron Brown, bass
Dominique Eade, vocals, with Armen Donelian, piano

The legendary Charlie Parker often introduced vocalist Sheila Jordan as “the singer with the million dollar ears” – and she’s got a priceless voice to match. Like Billie Holiday, Jordan’s voice resembles a saxophone improvising on a melody, highlighted by her unique bebop and scat jazz singing style that has earned her praise as “[o]ne of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers” (Scott Yanow). Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania’s coal-mining country, Jordan began singing as a child and by the time she was in her early teens she was working professionally in Detroit clubs. She moved to New York City in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that she made her first recordings, including The Outer View with George Russell, which featured a famous 10-minute version of You Are my Sunshine. She “reigns indisputably as mellow mistress of any jazz club she visits” (Downbeat) and has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2012 NEA Jazz Master. Jordan is followed by the “impossibly versatile” (the New York Times Magazine) vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger, Dominique Eade. Signed to RCA in 1996, Eade recorded two critically acclaimed albums with RCA, When the Wind Was Cool with Benny Golson, Fred Hersch, James Genus, Matt Wilson, and many others, and The Long Way Home with Dave Holland and Victor Lewis. She later released an album of duets, Open, in the fall of 2006. Jordan is accompanied by bassist Cameron Brown, and Eade is joined on stage by pianist and 2018 HJF curator, Armen Donelian.

Gustavo Amarente, bass
Lucas Pino, woodwinds

Led by multi-faceted guitarist, vocalist, composer, educator, musicologist and four-time NEA Jazz Performance Fellow Richard Boukas, Quarteto Moderno synergizes traditional Brazilian genres like samba and baião with a rich melodic and harmonic vocabulary drawn from contemporary jazz and chamber music. This innovative group offers fiery, spontaneous interactions driven by daring improvisations and perpetual rhythmic explorations. Their debut album, Live! Ao Vivo!, was recorded at The New School for the Performing Arts where Boukas has taught since 1995 and showcases ten of his compositions, each a tribute to a legendary Brazilian musician. Lucas Pino is a virtuoso of the saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet, whose recordings include Yellow Flower With Snail (Port Fenix), and No Net Nonet (Origin). A Brazilian native, bassist Gustavo Amarente quickly established himself in the US as first-call sideman for icons like Gato Barbieri, Toninho Horta, Duduka Da Fonseca and Hendrik Meurkens, and performs at major venues including Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall. Willie Martinez, drums
Renato Thoms, percussion

“ Tranchina can swing with the vivacity of Anita O’Day and echo the fragility of Astrud Gilberto on ballads, but there is nothing derivative in her kaleidoscopic flourishes, embracing chants, rap, spoken passages and vocalese.”
            – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

“…it is clear from Tranchina’s performance that she is a vocalist of the highest order. Her style is not conventional. …when she interprets the narrative of a song and gets in to character she has few peers. Anything new from her will be a welcome addition to the literature of vocal music.”
            – Raul da Gama,
LatinJazz.net

Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.”
            –Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

Her voice is just as much an instrument as the keys, melodica, programming, bass and percussion that accentuate her dizzyingly delightful worldview.
            – Mike Greenblatt,  rant ’n’ roll 2017
Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time.  A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout.  Check it out.

            – CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.

Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist…
If you love lilting jazz vocal work with a decidedly jazzy flavor, your ears will be mightily satisfied as you listen to Gabriele’s performance in this multicolored collection of music from around the world.
            – Grady Harp Amazon.com/Review

Tranchina’s lithe, clear; elegant singing evokes Sade, Flora Purim, Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister), and that “Girl From Ipanema,” Astrud Gilberto. ..—She uses her voice a bit like an instrument but never at the expense of the song. This set will fly you ‘round the world in a (happy) daze.
            – Mark Keresman Icon Magazine
Gabriele surprises with her ability to hold steady notes that other singers might artificially push down to make smoky, or force up to sound light. All of Tranchina’s notes sound right and expertly turned. None of the notes sound as though the singer has strained to reach them. In short, she doesn’t make a grating sound.
Tranchina’s work flows easily from one cultural to the next. Each piece of the instrumentation meshes with the other, and none of it overwhelms the singer. That is important; the album remains one of vocal jazz and listeners get a chance to hear who the singer is, as shown through the work.

            – Doudie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire

… In every song Gabriele’s sonorous and strong voice is the theater of one actor, where she skillfully gets used to the image of a representative of this or that culture.
            – Leonard Auskern jazzquad
Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well-balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes

-Michael Bailey – All about jazz

Endowed with a unique and specific voice and an ingenious interpretation of Gabriele Tranchina, on his new album she takes us on a true musical cruise, full of surprising events.

            -Robert Ratajcza

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

Special Guests:

MELODY GARDOT

KEN PEPLOWSKI

And Introducing Veronica Swift

The concert is dedicated to Maestro Ettore Stratta whose great musical talent and leadership set us on this path.

Watch Django Festival Allstars

It’s a celebration at the great hall as The Django Festival Allstars take center stage. They’ve been criss-crossing the US to sold-out crowds, standing ovations, and critical acclaim. At the Playboy Jazz Festival/Hollywood Bowl, Critic Scott Yanow wrote: “The highpoint of the entire festival was The Django Festival Allstars”

On May 1st, DORADO SCHMITT will perform alongside his two sons, SAMSON and AMATI (guitar soloists) ‘passing the family torch’ to them as his dad did to him, carrying on the legacy of Gypsy Jazz. Performing alongside are top Allstar soloists LUDOVIC BEIER (accordion & accordina) and PIERRE BLANCHARD (violin). DOUDOU CUILLERIER ‘S scat singing and rhythm guitar bring the house down along with gypsy cousin FRANCKO MEHRSTEIN on rhythm and ANTONIO LICUSATI and GINO ROMAN on bass.

… “the best jazz show in town! Imagine a stage filled with six contemporary Reinhardt descendants, and you’ll get a sense that the collective talent pool on the bandstand is larger than the Arc de Triomphe!”…Wall Street Journal

MELODY GARDOT

Grammy-winning vocalist, is a master of the art of capturing mood and emotion reminiscent of greats like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone.

Melody will be performing Django Rhinehardt’s most important composition, “Nuages,” with the legendary Dorado Schmitt on guitar.

KEN PEPLOWSKI  is arguably one of the greatest living jazz clarinetists who has collaborated with greats Mel Torme, Madonna, Bill Charlap, James Moody , Charlie Byrd,  Peggy Lee, Erich Kunzel. He tours the world at major festivals and clubs.

VERONICA SWIFT
Acclaimed as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene,  Veronica , 23,  is touring with  Chris Botti, performs regularly at Birdland, and  soon to  be touring Europe and the US.

The traditions flourish today with music as the heart and soul of family life, being passed down from one generation to another, as will happen on May 1st at Carnegie Hall.

The music is enrapturing…a feeling of freedom and abandon, the soul of Manouche gypsy life brought to life at Carnegie Hall upon the release of their new CD, Attitude Manouche, on Resilience Music Alliance.

Much of the music to be performed onstage highlights original compositions, keeping the spirit of Django fresh and beyond.

The Django Festival Allstars are the top players that have emerged from the Birdland Django Festival held twice a year, founded and co-produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta. The May 1 concert is dedicated to Maestro Stratta whose great musical talent and leadership set them upon this path.

THE GARIFUNA JAZZ ENSEMBLE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th 7:30pm METRO BAPTIST CHURCH

The Garifuna people and culture were created by one of the most dramatic ethnic mixings in history: two ships with enslaved Africans were shipwrecked off the coast of what is now St. Vincent and the Grenadines toward the end of the 18th Century, and with the help of the indigenous Carib-Indian population, overpowered the Spanish crew and escaped. Later, due to their continued resistance and rebellions against the British, their mixed progeny would then be exiled to the islands off the coast of Honduras. Instead of being isolated and dying off, their culture and oral language prospered and expanded into the Central American countries of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, where they still live.

However, because of terrible socio/political forces and war across the region, many Garifuna became exiles once again, settling in the United States: Los Angeles, Chicago, and the New York tri-state area, particularly in the Bronx. It is here that they remain determined to celebrate their culture and remain true to their heritage. Indeed, it is through their strong oral culture, transmitted through music and dance, that UNESCO proclaimed that this culture is a “masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage to humanity.”

Vocalist, Lucy Blanco, founder of The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, is a Garifuna who is continuing that journey. Born in the Bronx of immigrant Garifuna parents, she grew up in their traditions. However, while pursuing her dreams in the fashion industry in Los Angeles, Lucy Blanco discovered herself as the singer she always wanted to be through jazz. During a break from the fashion scene to raise her family, she started to explore that passion in earnest, honing her performance skills at every opportunity.

While in L.A., Lucy found a nurturing environment that served as a launching pad for her burgeoning career as a jazz vocalist. The World Stage in Leimert Park literally opened a world that introduced her to the late Billy Higgins, mentor Dahl Scott-McDuff, music director Michael Andrews, as well as working with The Radiant Voices, directed by bassist Kevin O’ Neil. She looks back on those early years as the foundation for her approach and love of jazz.

In 2008 researching her family history, Ms. Blanco discovered the Garifuna music of Andy Palacio, Paul Nabor and Aurelio Martinez, and was inspired to develop the concept of fusing Garifuna with jazz.  Home again in New York, she continued to be blessed with teachers and mentors who encouraged her, like the great Barry Harris, and she learned her lessons well. Ms. Blanco started to collaborate with some of the best musicians in the tri-state area, many with Garifuna heritage, like Ricardo Guity, resulting in a demo recording of Wayne Shorter’s  ‘Speak No Evil’, up to that time, the ideal blend of traditional Garifuna sounds with familiar jazz standards.

Later in the spring of 2011, the sound shifted some more as James Lovell, a Garifuna musician from Belize, and Blanco collaborated, and The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble was born.  This ensemble band was comprised of seasoned traditional and jazz musicians. It incorporated much more the distinctive sounds of the traditional Garifuna rhythms Punta, Paranda and Hungu, Hungu, Garifuna song language with Garifuna Drums, maracas, Conch, Turtle shells, piano and bass. The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble recorded their debut album in June 2016 called “Taguiera,” (Homeland), with its core members, Gary “Wicked” Fritz, percussion, Hilliard Greene, bass, Julian Meyers, saxophone, Mario E. Sprouse, piano, comprising the present renamed group, The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble:

Mario E. Sprouse, pianist, musical director, composer, and arranger, has been involved in the music, theater and film worlds for nearly 50 years. He was the legendary Renaissance man, African-American photographer, filmmaker, composer Gordon Parks’ musical assistant for over 20 years, cataloguing the artist’s massive archival collection, supervising the music for three of Parks’ films, producing his first original classical music CD, performing at Parks’ funeral in 2006, as well as working on the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary about Parks with filmmaker St. Claire Bourne.

Mr. Sprouse has also provided the musical arrangements for several other films, including an award winning Best Documentary Short, and winning awards for his Off-Broadway theatrical projects. Several jazz greats, including Carmen McRae, Freddie Hubbard, Buster Williams, among others, have recorded his musical arrangements, as well as Gregory Hines and Phylicia Rashaad performing his original songs live. Mr. Sprouse also is the musical director for the Caribbean band, Circular Time.

Hilliard Greene, bassist, composer, and teacher has played and been associated with a wide range of numerous musical artist greats and genres: from 20 plus years with Little Jimmy Scott, being Minton’s house bassist to Concert Master for Cecil Taylor. “Hill” has been  performing all over the world in all types of musical venues, as well as teaching both children and adults for over 25 years in classical, jazz, rock, blues, R&B and Tango. He is a faculty member of the Bass Collective

Mr. Greene, an original member of both The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble and The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, has recently formed The In & Out Band, a trio using jazz standards as a vehicle for free improvisation. He is the co-leader of the classical crossover group, the ZigZag Quartet, and co-produced its self-titled CD. Hilliard Greene has produced three CD’s with his own ensemble, The Jazz Expressions, a solo bass CD entitled, “Alone.”

Gary “Wicked” Fritz, percussionist, son of performing artists was raised and exposed at a very early age to musical environments and schooling that solidly nurtured him, and taught him to be a multi-instrumentalist in a wide variety of styles. Since 1974, while studying at Lincoln University, “Wicked” decided to pursue music as a profession, and has toured internationally with Big Bands, small combos and with dance companies, appearing on TV, Cable video and film soundtracks ever since.

Along with leading his own band, 7th Heaven, Gary “Wicked” Fritz has performed with George Benson, Rev. James Cleveland, Roberta Flack, The Black Rock Coalition Orchestra, Vernon Reid, and The Winans, among many others. He also has a long list of recording credits on albums and soundtracks, among them the Oscar nominated feature film, “The Visitor,” and The Horace Silver Songbook album, “Funky Pieces of Silver.”

Julian Meyers, saxophonist, composer, whose musical talents were nurtured early by public school music educators in Queens, continued to pursue his musical education while maintaining a professional career for over 26 years, playing all over the world with Dizzy Gillespie and Cecil Payne, among others.

As a dedicated music educator himself now for over 15 years, Julian Meyers exposes his students, in the same Queens neighborhood where he grew up, and now teaches, to his first love, jazz. Through his classes, and exposure to live performance, he hopes to make jazz relevant in their lives. Toward this goal, he has created programs like “Vision and Mission” and “Family Jazz Renaissance” as vehicles to emphasize jazz’s importance and to counterbalance its present lack of promotion in the Pop culture. Mr. Meyers was on the 2016 release of the Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble’s CD, “Taguiera.” He released his own album, “Emergence” and is currently working on another release.

Luisa Bastidas, violinist, Colombian born, has quickly become very active on the New York City scene as a member of the first all-female Mariachi band, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, with whom she has just won a Latin Grammy.

Ms. Bastidas’ unique sound/voicing on the violin is in demand with Emilio Estefan, as well as Latin superstar Thalia, who has used her as well, as a background vocal. She is the resident violinist of the Kinetic Jungliest Movement, playing with dancer Amy Secada and Redbull World Champion BBoy Neguin. She has collaborated with underground legends, SUPAMAN and Remind. Luisa Bastidas leads her own band, StringsNskins, which takes the listener on a musical journey throughout Latin America and Caribbean.
www.luisabastidas.com, www.stringsnskinsmusic.com.

Andy Ordonez, Garifuna Drums, backup vocals, is a young upcoming solo artist. A native of the Bronx, New York, born to parents of Garifuna descent, Andy is a proud Garifuna – American and represents his Garifuna Culture with pride. His musical career began at the age of 9 back home in the village of Santa Fe, Honduras with his friends and family playing drums all over the village.

At the age of 13, Andy Ordonez joined his father’s group, “Bodoma Cultural Band.” In 2015 he released his first album titled, “Mi Tradicion,” that is now available on ITunes, Spotify, Google Play, and Amazon. He also has traveled around the world with Honduran guitarist, percussionist, singer, and politician, Aurelio Martinez, (who like the late great guitarist and government official, Andy Palacio from Belize), is seen as an ambassador for the Garifuna people and culture.

Mariano Martinez, dancer, choreographer, entrepreneur, discovered his love for dance very early, and he has not stopped moving since. He is well versed in most modern dance styles, particularly of the Garifuna culture. When majoring in Psychology at Medgar Evers College, he found out his true calling choreographing for various college productions as well as his interests in entrepreneurship.

After graduating, Mariano founded his own company, J. Dove Productions, Inc. As CEO and Artistic Director, he not only choreographs special age birthday parties, but interrelates the future goals of the participants, and what they have learned, to the artistic event. In essence Mariano Martinez promotes the connection between creativity in dance to creative thinking in life, to a belief in oneself. Mariano is dedicated to continuing his work with the Central American community and encouraging and empowering youth in particular.

Maryam Abdul-Qawiyy, dancer, choreographer, dramatist, is an international writer, performance artist and Renaissance woman. She is multifaceted across many fields and attributes this to her passion for creative expression. As a performance artist, Maryam been a featured vocalist in annual Belizean patriotic showcases. As a choreographer she recently performed in the international dance festival, Dance X Belize 2017.

As a dramatist, Ms. Abdul-Qawiyy has written and directed five original stage plays, which debuted at the Women in Art showcase, and the International Pittsburgh Black Arts Festival.

She is a global ambassador and writer for Rhythm of Change (ROC Belize), a non-profit dedicated to activities that create individual, social and environmental change; as a yoga instructor she taught at the Belize Central Prison and Youth Hostel.

Currently, Maryam Abdul-Qawiyy lives in Brooklyn, New York where she is a teaching artist in Musical Theater and Yoga.

Abby London-Crawford proudly presents The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble in association with the Sanctuary Arts Initiative of Metro Baptist Church. Ms. London-Crawford, an officer of the Hell’s Kitchen Cultural Center, Inc. helped produced its annual “Rhythm in the Kitchen” Music Festival in the same neighborhood for over 10 years. Now, as an independent producer, she has produced concerts at Metro Baptist: in October, 2016 with TK Blue and Zaccai Curtis; Dick Griffin and Michael Wimberly; Elektra Kurtis and Ensemble Elektra with Reggie Nicholson, Curtis Stewart, and Kenny Davis.

In June, 2017 she co-produced with composer/trombonist Steve Swell’s “Music for Six Musicians: Hommage to Oliver Messaien” recorded live at Metro for Silkheart Records with Steve Swell, Jason Kao Hwang, Tomas Ulrich, Jim Pugliese, Rob Brown, and Robert Boston. The CD was released in October 2017.

Ms. London-Crawford has an upcoming concert March 3rd at Metro with Edith Lettner’s Freemotion CD release with Gerhard Franz Buchegger, Gerhard Graml, Stephan Brodsky coupled with her Delight band with Donald Smith, Gerhard Graml, Leopoldo F. Fleming, and Warren Smith.

Abby London-Crawford helped produce two documentaries on musicians: “Femmes de Jazz,” directed by Gilles Corre, filmed in NYC for European Television, which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival September, 2001; and “Night Bird Song, The Incandescent Life of Thomas Chapin,” directed by Stephanie J. Strykin’ Ahead

4 Stars Downbeat Nov. 2017

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“Da Fonseca divulgues a keen awareness of where Brazilian Jazz has been and where it’s headed”
Todd Jenkins, DownBeat Magazine

“[Alves has] subtlety, musicianship and extraordinary improvisational facility…” “…outstanding capabilities as a melodic improviser…”
Robert L. Doerschuk, DownBeat Magazine

“Alves plays with a gravity and a stylistic flair that’s truly impressive.”
Phillip Van Vleck, Billboard Magazine

“Alves executes his feats with unhurried grace, even at very fast tempos. There is an aptitude that, if not exclusive of Brazil, has reached its highest expression there: the communication of a subtle energy embodying a life- affirming message that life is transitory.”
Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times Magazine

“Adnet’s voice is an emotionally powerful instrument capable of firmness or fragility, depending on the situation. When the tempo slows down and the lights are low, she reveals an attractive vocal wave—more a quiver than out-and-out vibrato—that heightens the intensity in her delivery; this level of directness and honesty transcends mere language when it appears.”
– Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Maucha and I have travelled the world with the Banda Nova since 1984. She is a marvelous singer. Her voice is deep, rich, mysterious. It makes me long for the Brazilian forest. Maucha is intelligent and comes from a very musical family. She is a good girl, wonderful woman, a great artist”
Kiss from your fan,
Antonio Carlos Jobim

SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs Presents Bent Duo on Sunday, February 11th 3pm William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall

SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs Presents Bent Duo on Sunday, February 11th 3pm William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall

February 6, 2018

Longtime Marlene VerPlanck bassist and collaborator Jay Leonhart leads a tribute featuring many of her regular bandmates and special guests. As Leonhart says, “any time Marlene missed a gig, she insisted we play without her.” In fact Marlene was scheduled to perform at Birdland on February 15th before her untimely passing on January 15th, 2018, at the age of 84.

Newark native Marlene VerPlanck was a jazz and pop vocalist whose body of work centered on big band jazz, the American songbook, and cabaret. Her debut album was released in 1955 when she was 21, and featured jazz legends Hank Jones, Joe Wilder, Wendell Marshall, Kenny Clarke, and Herbie Mann. Later, she was the vocalist in big bands led by Charlie Spivak and Tommy Dorsey. VerPlanck was a prolific studio vocalist for jingles, which included singing an arrangement of the 1930s Campbell’s Soup “M’m M’m Good” song.

John has performed and recorded with David “Fat Head” Newman, Pat Martino, Houston Person and Taj Mahal. Mr. di Martino is a sought after musical director. He has accompanied Jon Hendricks, Keely Smith, Billy Eckstine , and Janis Siegel. John’s talents as arranger and pianist can be heard on recordings with Gloria Lynn, and Grady Tate. Dave Stryker
Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 28 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with, Stanley Turrentine and Jack McDuff, you know why Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”

Critics and Readers Polls. His most recent CD “Strykin’ Ahead” reached #3 for and has been in the Top 20 for 20 weeks on the JazzWeek Radio chart, and was picked as one of the top CD’s of 2017 by Downbeat.
Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, moved to New York City in 1980, and joined organist Jack McDuff’s group (1984-85). From 1986 to 1995, Stryker played with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many others.

Listen to Randy Cohen’s Interview with Jack Kleinsinger

During his 45 years producing the concert series Highlights in Jazz, he has gotten to know many brilliant musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once came by the house and played for his cat. But is jazz, if not dead then relegated to a museum piece? The future of an art form: at BMCC-Tribeca Performing Arts Center with music from Nicki Denner and Anton Denner, both very much alive.
