3 Artist Debut At APAP 2018

Vocalist Perez, saxophonist Richard Howell and Sudden Changes, and singer Kristina Koller bring unique jazz stylings to APAP|NYC, January 2018

Topping the APAP|NYC Don’t-Miss List: these three artist debuts at APAP- Perez mines the past for songs about today; Richard Howell and Sudden Changes make listeners move to their steady groove; Kristina Koller has a personal vision for standards, originals and pop faves.

APAP|NYC attendees should mark their calendars now to ensure they don’t miss three jazz highlights of the upcoming annual event: Vocalist Perez, saxophonist Richard Howell and Sudden Changes, and singer Kristina Koller, sure to be stand-out performers at the January 2018 conference.

Singer, composer, recording artist. Concert producer and promoter. Photographer and foodie. The Harlem-born vocalist Perez can swing a standard, share a story through song, or nail a protest anthem. Her delivery is intimate enough to touch individual hearts and minds, and powerful enough to fill a concert hall. Is there anything this self-described “hip chick” can’t do? Apparently not.

With her current “Truth Concert,” the dynamic vocalist Perez shines the spotlight on stories through timeless tunes made famous by Nina Simone, Simon & Garfunkel, Laura Nyro and her original compositions. The enduring messages of this carefully curated material resonated when first heard in the 1960s, and continue to be relevant today. Perez doesn’t shy away from taking a clear-eyed look at the current state of the world, but addresses the challenges we face with love and optimism, sincerely and joyously looking to a brighter future.

Perez spent her early years in foster care, an experience she credits with firmly rooting in her the improvisational skills so necessary for creating jazz. Her musical gifts were apparent virtually from the get-go: By age 4, Perez could hear a tune once and have total recall of both lyrics and melody. Despite her obvious affinity for music, she initially pursued the visual arts, moving to Los Angeles and building a thriving career as a photographer, designer, and stylist.

The vocalist’s impeccable musical taste developed while working in the art department at Paramount in Hollywood, sharing her space with a colleague who listened to jazz all day long. Mingus, Anita O’Day, Coltrane, and Bill Evans are just a few who made strong impressions, along with two divas who are perhaps Perez’s strongest influences: Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone. Her quest to discover and develop her own jazz voice led Perez to Europe, where she spent a decade studying with more established musicians, building a reputation as a singer, eventually leading a weekly session at Amsterdam’s highly regarded Bimhuis and performing in festivals across the continent.

Since returning to the Big Apple, her hometown, Perez has released three well-received albums—garnering kudos from the likes of the notoriously difficult to impress Stanley Crouch. She captivates and challenges listeners with her sultry and direct style, and continues to build an enthusiastic following. Perez’s inspirational life story would make a great book, and it’s easy to predict that some of the best chapters have yet to be written.

Bay Area-based saxophonist Richard Howell may be among the best-kept secrets in jazz: Though he’s released four albums as a leader, he’s better known in his usual role of supporting and guiding others. During his lifetime in music, Howell has built a great reputation as a producer, arranger, educator and sideman, working with a who’s who of jazz, blues, Latin and soul. Chaka Khan, Etta James, Carlos Santana, Babatunde Lea, Buddy Guy, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Taj Mahal, Regina Carter and Bobby Watson are among some the greats with whom he has shared a stage or studio. The versatile Mr. Howell also sings, and doubles on bass, drums, keyboards, guitar, and percussion.

These days he is stepping to the fore, fronting his band Sudden Changes, and proving that he is a straight-ahead jazz force to be reckoned with in his own right. Acclaimed trumpeter Christian Scott, who makes a guest appearance on Sudden Changes’ most recent release, Burkina, has dubbed Richard Howell the Jedi master of jazz. Maurice White, founder of Earth, Wind and Fire, has worked with Howell and compares him to the icons of jazz, such as the legendary tenor master Joe Henderson.

A regular on the international jazz festival circuit, Howell cites John Coltrane, James Brown and the Isley Brothers among his influences. He describes his own offerings as “bridge music,” which celebrates diversity as it bridges, unites and merges the experience of all listeners. “Bridge music is a jazz pathway over obstacles that joins differences and links through the sonic connection,” he notes.

It won’t be long till American listeners discover what audiences in Berlin, London and other points around the globe already know: Richard Howell and Sudden Changes are playing some of the most engaging jazz produced today.

From her earliest years, vocalist Kristina Koller, a New York City-area native, was inspired by the wide variety of live performances she attended in her early years, absorbing the best of Broadway, ballet, opera and jazz. Bitten by the performing bug, she tried her hand at musical theater, did solo singer/songwriter gigs, sang with an alternative band, and studied classical music and opera.

Koller gravitated to jazz after realizing what an opportunity it offered for self-expression. Instead of re-creating the performances and styles of others, her goal is to add something unique to the jazz legacy. Koller approaches improvisation with a spirit of fun, reveling in the opportunity to create music on the fly, while exploring her musical chops and revealing her vulnerability.

The young vocalist studied jazz at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, in Hartford, Connecticut, and City College of New York. Koller also honed her craft through lessons with jazz veterans including Steve Wilson, Charenee Wade, Marion Cowings, Cyrille Aimee and Amy London.

Koller is looking forward to the release of her first album, Perceptions, in January 2018. On her upcoming release, Koller, who has been gigging regularly since her teens, stamps her personal jazz point of view on everything from standards to originals to pop tunes by the likes of John Mayer, Blink-182 and Bon Iver.

With each song she sings, Koller aims to stay true to the spirt of the music, while interpreting it in her own fresh and personal way.

January 14, at 4:30 p.m. showcase produced by Gail Boyd: at the Hilton Hotel’s Regent Parlor: Catch vocalist Perez performing highlights from her “Truth Concert,” featuring songs popularized by Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, Simon & Garfunkel and some original compositions.www.hipchickalert.com

“Enter April May! A young singer who is as naturally talented as she is cultivated…She is at once, lyrical and soulful. April is definitely one to watch out for – a singer that can go in almost any direction. The future looks brighter because of the promise of April May. My Joyful expectation..!”

Florida Native, Randall Haywood is a graduate from the Juilliard School of Music. Randall utilizes the trumpet with great emotional expression. His sound continues to look towards the future, while paying homage to Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry and Miles Davis. Billboard Chart-Topping Vocalist
ANNA DANES
Makes Her NYC Club Debut
at Club Bonafide
Saturday, September 16th 7:30pm

Tickets & Info

“Simply put, Anna Danes is a STAR.”
– United Press International

Discovering a new life, fresh purpose and her true inner voice after years of keeping up appearances in an unfulfilled existence she called a “gilded cage,” Anna Danes is truly flying high. The emerging jazz vocalist and songwriter captures the inspirational philosophy that continues to propel her forward in the opening lines from “Find Your Wings,” the gorgeous piano-vocal ballad that is the title track and centerpiece to her new full length album. Speaking both to her soul and to millions of women who seek the courage to liberate themselves and follow their deeper creative passions, she sings, “When you feel that you don’t fit/You’re not understood one bit/Find Your Wings/You can rise above the fray/Sing what you can’t seem to say/Find Your Wings.”

The Polish born, San Diego based multi-faceted artist and performer’s advocacy for passion-pursuing and dream chasing has caught on quickly. Upon its release, Find Your Wings debuted at #1 on the iTunes jazz chart. Soon thereafter, it placed on two Billboard charts, reaching #13 on the Traditional Jazz chart and in the Top 25 on the Jazz Albums chart. The collection, a follow-up to her well received 2013 debut Longing, was produced by Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Tom Waits, Jack Johnson, Motley Crue) and recorded with top L.A. session musicians in Capitol Studios A, where greats like Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole once held court.

A true Renaissance woman who has used music as a springboard to become a motivational speaker, budding author, noted philanthropist and live show producer in the San Diego area, Anna recently created a vision board for the way she wants her career to unfold. None of these hopes and dreams seemed remotely possible just a few years ago, when her marriage was breaking down and the onetime stay at home mom was trying to literally find her wings and start over at the age of 43. Recording her second album in the place where the legends worked their timeless magic was the ultimate confirmation that she had succeeded in re-inventing herself while sharing those long latent musical gifts with the world.

“Find Your Wings is about me having found my passion and purpose and being set free on this exciting new path of music, which allowed me to leave my cage of self-doubt,” Anna adds. “I had a cushy lifestyle and could have taken the path of least resistance and stayed in it. Five years ago I was a pale shadow of myself, dressed nicely for all the world to see but empty inside.”

The six standards on Find Your Wings are all “dear friends” already in her repertoire – “I Will Wait For You,” “It’s Crazy,” “I Want to Be Around/Cry Me A River,” “That’s All” and “In The Wee Small Hours.” The six originals are powerful snapshots of her life from around the time she wrote them. “The Voice,” a co-write with Cindy Alexander, is about life at the end of her marriage, while “Mr. OMG,” co-penned with Harris, reflects on life after separation. The others – “Long Distance” (co-written with Darling), “See You in L.A.” (with Alexander) and “I Love You,” a hypnotic a capella piece written by Anna that closes the set – are life with a new love and falling in love for the first

In addition to her career as a singer, Anna produces private and public events as well as the very successful Jazz on Cedros concert series in San Diego that has celebrated sold out shows since its inception in 2014. She is currently writing her first book – also titled “Find Your Wings” – which chronicles her incredible journey from Poland to Canada and Southern California, through her careers as a lawyer and business manager for her husband, and the amazing unfolding of her musical artistry. She is also an avid philanthropist for causes that support women, children and the arts, with a seat on the board of the San Diego Symphony.

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

DAVE STRYKER-guitar, STEVE NELSON-vibraphone, JARED GOLD-organ,
McCLENTY HUNTER-drums

The notion of moving forward by triangulating a space between creative and pragmatic imperatives is a consistent thread throughout Dave Stryker’s four decades in the jazz business, not least on Strykin’ Ahead, his 28th CD as a leader. Stryker augments his working trio of Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums with vibraphone player Steve Nelson, all on-board for a second go-round after their stellar contri- butions to last year’s Eight-Track II. Like the leader, Nelson is a preternaturally flexible and in-the-moment improviser with deep roots in the tradition who knows how to push the envelope without damaging the contents. Stryker internalized those imperatives on a 1984-1986 run with Brother Jack McDuff, and he received further invaluable training in the art of musical communication during a decade on the road with Stanley Turrentine, to whom he paid homage on the 2015 release Don’t Mess With Mister T.

In contrast to his Eight Track II conception of putting his spin on pop hits of his formative years, Stryker returns to his long-standing practice of presenting originals and reharmonized standards from the jazz and show music songbooks. “Shadowboxing” is a burning 14-bar minor blues; his well-considered chordal variations on Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints” proceed to a simmering 5/4 figure. Next is “New You” (a stimulating Stryker contrafact of the oft-played “There Will Never Be Another You”). He personalizes Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” set to Hunter’s insinuating bossa-funk groove. The title track “Strykin’ Ahead” has a Cadillac-racing-down-the-freeway-feel; he imbues the lovely melody of “Who Can I Turn To” with the full measure of his plush, inviting tone.

That Stryker knows his Albert King is evident on the slow-drag “Blues Down Deep,” which evokes wee-hours third sets in the inner city grills and lounges of Stryker’s apprentice years. He knows his bebop, too. On Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring,” the solo flights over Stryker’s “modernized” progressions transpire over Hunter’s drum-bass beats and crisp, medium-up four-on-the cymbal; on the chopbusting “Donna Lee,” all members springboard off a churchy vamp and Hunter’s funk-infused swing.

“I’ve always wanted to write vehicles that are fun and interesting to blow over,” Stryker says. “Trying to come up with a beautiful melody that lasts is very fulfilling. Writing is a big part of my voice in this music.” Stryker is too modest to say that his voice is also a big part of jazz, to which he’s devoted a career marked by consistent application of the values that he espouses. But that’s all right—I’ll say it for him.

NJCU ALUMNI JAZZ BIG BAND
100TH BIRTHDAY SALUTE
TO ELLA, DIZZY, BUDDY AND MONK
FEATURING JON FADDIS
AND CYRILLE AIMÉE

Free Concert September 15 on Jersey City Waterfront

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band will perform a 100th Birthday Salute to Four Jazz Icons, featuring the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, and Thelonious Monk on the J. Owen Grundy Pier, Exchange Place, in Jersey City on Friday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m. Conducted by recently retired NJCU Professor Richard Lowenthal, this free concert features the renowned trumpeter Jon Faddis and the acclaimed young jazz singer Cyrille Aimée.

The fifth annual concert with the Alumni Jazz Big Band is a collaboration between New Jersey City University and the City of Jersey City, which recognizes the value of music and the arts for the people of the community.

“NJCU is proud to partner with the City to present this special tribute to four remarkable jazz artists who all happened to have been born 100 years ago. Their artistry had a profound influence on the development of jazz and it is wonderful to bring everyone together to celebrate,” said University President Sue Henderson. “We are particularly pleased that Jon Faddis and Cyrille Aimée are able to share their talents with our music alumni, faculty and students.”

One of the world’s most famous trumpet players, Jon Faddis was mentored by the great Dizzy Gillespie and is a long-time advocate of his music. As a performer and educator, he continues the jazz trumpet lineage going back to Louis Armstrong. Mr. Faddis was a guest artist at the first Alumni Jazz Big Band concert in 2013 as part of the celebration of Dr. Henderson’s inauguration as the University’s first woman president.

French singer Cyrille Aimée has been making a name for herself since she burst onto the jazz scene some 10 years ago. She has won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition, and was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition. She now tours internationally with her own band and as a duo with the renowned guitarist Diego Figueiredo.

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band features accomplished musicians who studied at the University as far back as the late 1960s, when Professor Richard Lowenthal started the jazz program.  Performing this year will be drummer Rich DeRosa (recipient of the 2014 NJCU Distinguished Alumni Award); sax players Mark Friedman, John DiSanto, Dave Nolan, Dustyn Richardson, and Dave Schumacher; trumpeters Marcell Bellinger, Vinnie Cutro, Nathan Eklund, and Freddie Hendrix; trombonists Rob Edwards, and Michael Modero; faculty members Allen Farnham on piano, Andy Eulau on bass, and Paul Robertson on percussion; former faculty member Peter McGuiness on trombone; and member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band, Doug Purviance, on trombone.

Sponsors for the Fifth Annual NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Concert include: the NJCU Foundation, New Jersey City University, Arch Insurance, Inserra Supermarkets, Hampshire Companies, RBC Capital Markets, NJTV, BCB Community Bank, Cambridge Construction, Connell Foley, Crossroads Construction, Del-Sano Contracting, Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Tom and Anne Stanton, Mack-Cali, Avison-Young, Hyatt Regency of Jersey City, African-American Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce, Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Jazz Society, WCTC, Hot House Jazz Magazine, and WBGO.

The 100th Birthday Salute to Four Jazz Icons concert is free and open to the public. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Harborside Atrium, Harborside Plaza 2 and 3 at 34 Exchange Place. The J. Owen Grundy Pier is conveniently located near public transportation and there are parking lots in the area.  For more information, call 201-200-3426 or visit the NJCU website at

Saturday, Sept. 16th at 7:30pm: The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with special guests, the Gerald Clayton Trio will premiere the 2017 MJF Commission, John Clayton’s “Stories of a Groove: Conception, Evolution, Celebration.”

Born in Tel Aviv, Tamir Hendelman began keyboard studies at age 6, moving to the U.S. in 1984 and winning Yamaha’s national keyboard competition two years later.  Concerts in Japan and the Kennedy Center followed.  Drawn to the impressionistic and jazz harmonies of composers such as Ravel and Bill Evans, he studied at the Tanglewood Institute and received a B.M. in Music Composition from Eastman School of Music in 1993.  Soon after, he formed his own trio, featuring original compositions, bebop, blues and Brazilian music.    Since 2000 he has toured the US, Japan and Europe with his trio and as a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

In 2001 he premiered Clayton’s orchestration of Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.  Peterson wrote in his online journal: “It was a satisfying but strange feeling… to hear a new young voice make some exhilarating and thoughtful solos in the spaces that I used to occupy in those pieces…I look forward to hearing more from him.”

Tamir Hendelman has released two recordings as a leader of his trio:  Playground (Swing Bros, 2008) and Destinations (Resonance 2010). Reaching #1 on the jazz charts, Destinations takes listeners along on a voyage of musical discovery.  The music ranges from originals to Jobim, Keith Jarrett and Maurice Ravel.  “Destinations to me is not only about the places I have traveled to, but also about the journey of being a jazz musician.”

He has also become a first-rate arranger and accompanist for some of today’s premier vocalists, such as Natalie Cole, Roberta Gambarini, and Jackie Ryan. He has accompanied Barbra Streisand in her return to jazz on Love Is The Answer (Columbia, 2009), at the Village Vanguard as well as on her 2012 North American orchestral tour.

Since 2005, Tamir Hendelman has been on the jazz faculty of UCLA and has conducted numerous workshops in universities and music programs in the US and abroad. He has also recently arranged and recorded for artists such as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, accordionist Richard Galliano and violinist Christian Howes.  In 2014, he performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue with the Winston-Salem Symphony.

“There are many fine pianists with impressive technique and swing who are convincing in a number of styles and play with real feeling. What increasingly distinguishes Hendelman is his gift for imaginative arranging…. He will compose an introduction that makes it difficult to predict what follows, but seems perfectly suited—even organic—once the tune begins.”   (www.allaboutjazz.com)

Sounds Of A&R (S.O.A.R.)

Making their mark!…..This week’s

JazzWeek Chart 44*- 32*

Sounds of A & R aka S.O.A.R. is the brainchild of vocalist April May Webb and Trumpeter Randall Haywood. Partners in music and life, April and Randall have come together creating a distinct sound that fuses aspects of Swing, Cool, Hard Bop and Avant-garde.

April May, hails from Newton, Kansas. Her unique vocal approach draws from a wide range of influences such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. She sings with a rustic warm tone and strong articulation. April May was a featured vocalist in a televised Christmas and Summer Special with PJ Rasmussen and the Boardwalk Jazz Band. The special aired nationally on several networks including ABC, NBC and CBS.

“Enter April May! A young singer who is as naturally talented as she is cultivated…She is at once, lyrical and soulful. April is definitely one to watch out for – a singer that can go in almost any direction. The future looks brighter because of the promise of April May. My Joyful expectation..!”
Mulgrew Miller

Florida Native, Randall Haywood is a graduate from the Juilliard School of Music. Randall utilizes the trumpet with great emotional expression. His sound continues to look towards the future, while paying homage to Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry and Miles Davis. Sounds of A & R have been making their mark in the New York scene, wowing audiences on stages such as The Birdland Jazz Club and the legendary Apollo Theater. In their self-titled debut album, the listener will be taken on an artistic journey through and array of colors in modern jazz. While standards like ‘September in the Rain’ and ‘Midnight Sun’ will be reminiscent of the Clifford Brown and Sarah Vaughan classics, S.O.A.R. finds their unique sound with wonderfully crafted arrangements of their own original compositions such as ‘Love’s Dilemma’ and the beautifully earthly ‘Nobody Knows’. Jazz at the Maverick presents the CMS Improvisers Octet, exploring themes from some of Don Cherry’s visionary recordings as well as pieces by other composers that follow his lead into “world fusion.” The ensemble’s “In the Spirit of Don Cherry” performance will use pieces from these materials as launching pads for improvised interpretations that weave together jazz, world music and contemporary music.

The ensemble features musicians who played with Cherry including Karl Berger (piano, vibes, leader), Bob Stewart (tuba), Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (reeds, percussion), Graham Haynes (cornet), Ingrid Sertso (vocals); along with Adam Lane (bass) and Tani Tabbal (drums).

About Don Cherry

Noted for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, which began in the late 1950s, Don Cherry became a pioneer of world-fusion music in the 1960s. During this period, he incorporated various ethnic styles into his playing and composing. Cherry, who died in 1995, was essential to the creation and development of the Creative Music Studio™.  He inspired many of its methodologies, taught many CMS workshops and founded his legendary group, Codona, at CMS. A suite of his is included in CMS Archive Project Selections Vol. 2, released last year.

About The Creative Music Studio and Karl Berger

CMS engages musicians and listeners from all backgrounds and traditions, deepening and transforming their personal experience, understanding, and expression of music as a universal language. Over its 45 year history, hundreds of artists from all over the world representing nearly every style or genre of music have taught and performed at CMS. CMS was founded in 1973 by artistic director Karl Berger, composer, arranger, conductor, pianist, and vibraphonist, along with Ornette Coleman and Ingrid Sertso. The six-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll and recipient of numerous other awards in the US and Europe, Karl holds a PhD in music esthetics and has been a professor of composition and an artist-in-residence at universities, schools, and festivals worldwide. He has recorded and performed with Don Cherry, Lee Konitz, John McLaughlin, Gunther Schuller, Dave Brubeck, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Pharoah Sanders, and many others.

Advance Praise For Strykin’ Ahead

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

The concept of Family is so fundamental to musical development, especially in New York City where so many families-by-choice evolve through shared musical experiences in its huge artistic melting pot. For the outstanding trumpeter/composer Chris Rogers, that family essence is at the heart and soul of his personal vision, and in full evidence on his remarkable debut album Voyage Home for Art of Life Records.

Chris has been blessed to be a part of multiple families – his deeply musical birth family that included his father, the legendary Salsa and jazz trombonist Barry Rogers; the extended family surrounding the Brecker Brothers (alongside whom Barry played in the seminal jazz fusion ensemble Dreams); and his own family of collaborators who he has met through his own participation in the ensembles of a virtual who’s who of contemporary music. All of these components are brewed together in the sumptuous feast that is Voyage Home.

“Listening to Mike, Randy and my dad playing together, and all Barry’s great solos on those classic Eddie Palmieri sides pretty much informed my concepts … and have been such towering influences upon me – that the music here can be considered a direct reflection of their incredible spirits.”

Dedicated to Michael Brecker (who lends his spectacular artistry on two tracks that Chris was fortunate to record with him before his tragically premature departure), this album also includes many artists – in person and through some individual track dedications (including Don Grolnick, Lew Soloff Mike Lawrence, Ray Barretto) – closely allied with the expansive Brecker Brothers’ legacy. But like all tributes in their finest form, the real homage is embodied in the creation of a personal statement in a singular vision by an artist honed through that spirit. The nine Chris Rogers originals contained here truly embody that concept. They also reflect the broad palette of personal musical experiences that Chris has had in his own journey alongside such diverse luminaries as Gerry Mulligan, Eddie Palmieri, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Chaka Khan, Mongo Santamaria, Maria Schneider, Ray Barretto, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell… and the list goes on and on. This long overdue first album as a leader blends all those ingredients into a heady brew that is adventurous, celebratory and captivating.

Chris has assembled a stellar crew for this maiden voyage, musically connected with him and with each other, powerfully contributing to the remarkable synergy that is at play throughout the album.  The brilliant bass/drums tandem of Jay Anderson and Steve Johns provide flawless, seemingly telepathic support throughout, whether driving ferociously, warmly embellishing, or grooving smoothly Powerhouse pianist Xavier Davis melds with them perfectly on six tracks, adding a few stunning solos as well.  Synthesizer/ keyboard wizard Mark Falchook joins the rhythm section on three.

In addition to the two tracks with Mike, the splendid tenor and alto saxophonist Ted Nash performs on four; while baritone saxophonist Roger Rosenberg and trombonist Art Baron perform on a very special dedication to Barry Rogers – enhanced by the great man himself on an introductory trombone cadenza (thanks to the blessings of technology) with a most fitting statement drawn from Palmieri’s 1965 classic album Mozambique. The great guitarist Steve Khan is included on three tracks, two of which include the fine conguero/percussionist Willie Martinez.

Drawn upon his Miles/Brecker/Harrell/Woody Shaw influences, Rogers’ impeccable trumpet playing – articulate, exploratory, adventurous, utterly musical and virtuosic, but never for its own sake or ostentatious in any way – is eminently showcased, but totally in keeping with the overall context of the album and always leaving plenty of room for the others to offer their own prodigious contributions. The repertoire is terrific, showcasing Chris’ superb compositional and arranging talents in a nicely diverse array of works that are exciting, lyrical and structured to provide inspired launching points for the exploratory tales told within. Ballads, Latin, hard boppish funk and blues, and rip-roaring smokers are all part of the mix.

There is a 3-track “suite” of sorts – the jaunty Rebecca born as a samba, evolving into  straight-up Afro/Cuban; the beautiful love song Ever After; and the intriguingly angular Six Degrees – in which Chris adds his own notable keyboard skills to the mix on two pieces along with his trumpet – Harmon-muted on a pair. Khan is prominently present on all three with exceptional solos and his marvelous signature comping; and Martinez’ percussion mastery adds a fervid glow.

Roger and Art join Chris and Ted in a richly sumptuous 4-horn soundscape on the poignant paean to Barry Rogers, Ballad for B.R. launched by Barry Rogers’ “borrowed” radiant trombone cadenza, and featuring compelling solos by Chris, Nash (on alto) and Rosenberg. Nash – virile, muscular and boldly creative – is prominently featured on tenor with Chris on the front line for three other tracks. The title track Voyage Home is an atmospheric journey that evokes that profound essence of the progressive 60s’ Blue Note music in its daring, fully in-command approach with imaginative and confrontational solos by both hornmen. The Mask is a deliciously jagged funk-fest with soulful tenor, riveting trumpet and vibrant piano solos – in a groove that while relaxed is also high in heat. And the album closer,  The 12-Year Itch is a jubilant funky-hard-bop shuffle with nicely swaggering horn turns.

Michael Brecker, who always brought his all fully to the music, is absolutely sensational on his two tracks. The album opener Counter Change is a straightforward hard-bop blues with some edgy changes that sets the tone for exhilarating Rogers, two-fisted Davis and sinewy, full bodied Brecker. Whit’s End (named for Whit Sidener, one of Chris’ teachers, and dedicated to Brecker) is a deftly syncopated romp driven by an insistent piano/bass ostinato with delightful rhythmic shifting from blazing drive to Latin and peppered with touches of rubato. Rogers’ thoughtful solo is beautifully constructed and sets the path for a monster Brecker solo – gutty, incandescent and absolutely scorching – that epitomizes his indelible and immortal spirit.

It may have taken a long time for Chris Rogers to finally make his own statement on record, but Voyage Home will certainly last in the memory and set the tone for much more to come from this extraordinary artist.

AN IMMIGRANT’S SONG

≈ Haitian-born Pop Soul Artist
Hervé Coeur

to Return to Joe’s Pub at the Public ≈

NEW YORK, July 27, 2017 “My work is a celebration of the spirit of the Haitian people, and a reflection on our strength in the face of incredible odds” said pop soul artist Hervé Coeur

Rooted in the land of his birth, Hervé connects his listeners to his past while also integrating the influences of the United States, France and India, all places he now calls home. His music is vibrant, engaging and ultimately uplifting, allowing the audience to transcend their differences and feel the heartbeat of humanity.

Hervé’s voice is warm, deep and ethereal and his lyrics akin to poetry. He blends musical genres — the French Chanson, 90’s Alternative American Rock and 60’s Motown and Soul — to create his unique style. He has connected and made lasting impressions on audiences in the U.S., most recently for the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations, and throughout Europe, most notably in France, where he has performed at the legendary L’Olympia and La Cigale in Paris.

Hervé will be making a repeat performance at Joe’s Pub at the Public at 425 Lafayette Street in New York City on Wednesday, August 30. His title song will be “Mr. Blue,” a tribute to his grandfather, who in the Haitian landscape of vast blue sky and blue ocean wove a dream of his family as infinite as the stunning beauty that surrounded them. Hervé’s exquisite expression in “Give Love” advocates for the absence of judgment and for a world where we give love that comforts not only our souls, but those of others.

Hervé: Mr. Blue live at Joe’s Pub, Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10009 on Wednesday, August 30. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m.

The Rippingtons: Featuring Russ Freeman
Fri. September 29 at 8pm

“When I started the Rippingtons, I never imagined it would last more than the release of one album, let alone thirty years!” said Russ Freeman, leader and founder of the pioneering, GRAMMY® nominated group The Rippingtons, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary with the release of True Stories, the band’s 22nd CD.

True Stories, which released in June 2016, is a refreshing elixir that will delight devout fans and attract new ones. Joined by original Rippington, alto and soprano saxophonist Brandon Fields, drummer Dave Karasony, bassist and rhodes player Rico Belled and special guest Grammy-winning Jeffrey Osborne, Freeman orchestrates ten compelling original song such as “Wild Tales,” “My Promise,” and “Wonderland.”

True Stories is a testament to the unwavering artistry of Russ Freeman and The Rippingtons and confirmation that there are still many more tales to be told. “I’m trying to reach for a place I have not been. I’m looking for inspiration. I never look back. ”It is this forward momentum that propels the notes on True Stories and keeps the listeners yearning for the next chapter. And the cover features the spunky and funk jazz cat that devoted Rippingtons fans are well acquainted with.

Laura Ainsworth grew up watching her dad, renowned big band musician Billy Ainsworth, back such idols as Tony BennettElla Fitzgerald and Mel Torme. Today, she keeps the family tradition alive in a style critics have dubbed “new vintage.” She freely mixes classic lounge jazz with modern touches to create her own unique twist on standards and lost gems of the Great American Songbook, as well as new songs in that elegant style. Her albums “Keep It To Yourself” and “Necessary Evil” have earned critical raves and worldwide airplay. She has sung from Las Vegas to India, and her sultry, satiny, three-octave voice has been compared to such mid-century chanteuses as Dinah ShoreJulie London and Jo Stafford.

The Metropolitan Room, New York’s premier cabaret/jazz showroom, is proud to present the New York solo debut of this elegant Texas songbird, in celebration of the August release of her highly-anticipated third CD, “New Vintage”; a “best of” audiophile vinyl LP titled “Top Shelf”; and her appearance on “This Is Vintage Now, Vol. 2,” the latest in the popular CD compilation series.
Accompanying her will be her producer/jazz pianist extraordinaire and Sammons Center for the Arts “Dallas Jazz Musician of the Year” Brian Piper of the ‘Nawlins Gumbo Kings and Jerry Jeff Walker‘s Gonzo Compadres Band.

MORRISTOWN JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL SATURDAY, AUGUST 19th

Much Anticipated Free Festival Announces Addition of
Saxophonist Mark Rivera

MORRISTOWN, NJ – The seventh annual Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will be held on the Green on Saturday, August 19, from noon until 10:00 p.m. This year’s free concert has a Jersey link for four out of the five groups to appear.

The popular festival begins at noon with the Grammy Award-winning Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, undoubtedly one of the best known and most popular jazz bands in the country. Performing the music of the Twenties and Thirties, the Nighthawks have appeared in many films including “Carol,” “The Cotton Club,” “The Aviator,” and “Finding Forrester.”  And it was their music and frequent performances on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” that made them an international sensation and provided a close link with the Atlantic City of the Prohibition Era.

At two o’clock, legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli returns to the stage with his quintet featuring his long-time partner Ed Laub on guitar, his number two son Martin Pizzarelli on bass, the young sax sensation Linus Wyrsch, and Ken Levinsky on piano. Born and raised in Peterson, Bucky may be 91 but he maintains a youthful exuberance and unparalleled virtuosity on his distinctive seven string guitar. Elected to the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2012, Bucky has recorded and performed with everyone from Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra to The Four Seasons and Paul McCartney.

Then at four, the festival is proud to bring back to the stage Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses who were a sensation in 2016. The band not only plays the music of his incomparable father, including such hits as “Jump Jive ‘an Wail,” “Just a Gigolo,” and “Sing Sing Sing,” they very much have their own sound and material. Louis Prima Jr. has close ties to New Jersey as his mother Gia Maione Prima was raised in Toms River and graduated from Toms River High School before embarking on her own singing career.

At six o’clock, the music turns the blues with six-time Blues Music Award nominee Ana Popovic and her band. The Serbian guitar-player and singer tours the world and has become a popular performer at blues festivals both here and abroad. She was the only female guitarist invited to be part of the Experience Hendrix Tour, sharing the stage with stars like Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Zakk Wilde. And her records routinely reach the top of the Billboard Blues Charts.

The full day of music concludes with The Walter Trout Band led by the critically-acclaimed guitarist. Walter Trout was born and raised in Ocean City, New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles to break into the blues circuit. He quickly earned a reputation backing greats such as John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield, and Joe Tex. In 1981, he became lead guitarist for Canned Heat where legendary bluesman John Mayall heard him and invited him to join the Bluesbreakers. Following in that group’s tradition of great guitars, such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor, helped Trout solidify his reputation as a top player. When he finally went out on his own, he became a chart-topping star in Europe. He is a 3-time winner of the “Overseas Artist of the Year” from the British Blues Awards, a winner of the prestigious Sena European Guitar Award, a 3-time Blues Music Award nominee, a top-ten guitar player in the BBC’s Guitarist Listeners’ Poll, and a winner of 2 Blues Music Awards in 2016.

Walter Trout will bring a very special guest to the stage with him, the multi-talented musician Mark Rivera. Rivera may be best known as Billy Joel’s longtime saxophonist, contributing some of the best known sax work in popular music. He also tours with Ringo Starr’s All-Star Band and has worked with Elton John, Steve Winwood, Joe Walsh, and many others.

Festival co-producer Linda Smith is pleased to have Walter Trout close the show this year. “Walter has become one of the biggest names on the blues circuit,” she said. “And he is thrilled to return to New Jersey where he got his start. I’m expecting a huge party on the Green all day long particularly with the addition of Mark Rivera.”

Mayor Tim Dougherty, who initiated the festival in 2011, added “Every year we have several surprises for the crowd as well as some old favorites. And this year is no different. With great jazz in the afternoon and hot blues in the evening, there is something for everyone’s tastes and the festival is becoming of the most popular in the Northeast. We are so grateful to our generous sponsors for making this incredible festival possible.”

Major sponsors for this summer’s Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival include the Gia Maione Prima Foundation, Bijou Properties, ConnectOne Bank, JCP&L, Hampshire Companies, Inglesino Webster, NJTV, Normandy Real Estate Partners, Sherman Wells, and Riker Danzig.

Additional sponsors include Atlantic Stewardship Bank, Alaimo Group, Atlantic Health, Day Pitney, Delaware Raritan, F.J. Rawding, 40 North, George and Martha’s Restaurant, Greenbaum Rowe Smith Davis, Headquarters Plaza, Investors Bank, Iron Bar, Leona Morris, Lindabury McCormick, McEnerney Brady, Morristown Municipal Airport, the Community Theatre at MPAC, NK Architects, O’Donnell McCord, The Office Tavern Grill, PKF O’Connor Davies, PSEG, Toll Brothers, Town Bar & Kitchen, Toll Brothers, Topology, Vertical Realty, NJ, Morristown Parking Authority, Trustees of the Morristown Green, Hot House Jazz Magazine, Morris Arts, MorristownGreen.com, NJ Arts, NJ Jazz List, and the New Jersey Jazz Society. The acoustic jazz ensemble, Rhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Olli Soikkeli, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke on second guitar and Greg Loughman on bass, Rhythm Future is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.

Performing Music From Her New CD

Welcome to Ladies Day!

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates the compositions of classic and contemporary jazz women with her upcoming CD, Ladies Day

On her sparkling new debut album, singer MJ Territo shows off her range and versatility, lending her voice to blues, bebop, bossa and ballads
With her new CD, Ladies Day, singer/composer/lyricist MJ Territo shines a light on a rare collection of tunes by great writers who just happen to be women. Mary Lou Williams, Abbey Lincoln, Patricia Barber, Peggy Lee and Blossom Dearie are just some of the classic icons of jazz and cult favorites represented in this collection of lesser-known songs that definitely deserve to be heard more often.

MJ Territo didn’t set out to focus on women; while making a pre-gig set list, she noticed that several of the songs she chose were written by women. That motivated her to dig deeper in search of material by female composers, and MJ soon realized she could put together a whole evening’s worth of great music from her discoveries. The variety of themes was part of the attraction: Sure, there were love songs, but also tunes about “resilience, self-awareness, self-reliance, and a curiosity about the wider world.”

Territo found herself thinking: “Hmmm … how about getting together a group of women jazz musicians to play them? Wouldn’t that be fun?” Pianist Linda Presgrave, who had released two CDs of compositions by women, immediately came to mind. “I knew Linda and I were on the same wavelength where women jazz composers were concerned,” MJ recalls. Impressed by bassist Iris Ornig’s album No Restrictions, the singer invited her on board. Rounding out the Ladies Day Quartet is drummer Barbara Merjan; MJ heard her at a club and recognized the sound she was looking for.

In picking the 14 tunes for Ladies Day, MJ’s debut album, the singer didn’t take an easy route: The CD is full of challenging material. But not only does MJ Territo prove she’s up to the challenge, she sounds like she’s having a ball while she’s at it.

Among the Ladies Day highlights are:

“No Time for Snoozin’,”  This Territo original features a piano intro that immediately engages the listener, as do the witty lyrics.

“Everything is Moving Too Fast,” Check out the excellent solos by Ornig and Merjan on this Peggy Lee tune,  along with the bluesy, bouncy vocal.

“Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado” shares a melody with “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Territo sings the Spanish lyric with deep feeling, and also demonstrates her chops in the universal language of vocalese.

The tight band is augmented by special guests on several tracks, including:

“Strange Fascination,” by Mary Lou Williams and Ada Moore, one of Territo’s favorites, which she found in the Mary Lou Williams Archives at Rutgers. Tenor saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, who has released a Williams tribute CD, guests on this tune.

Flutist Andrea Brachfeld is featured on Blossom Dearie’s piquantly amusing “I’m Shadowing You,” along with Territo’s flirty vocal.

Harpist Brandee Younger appears on “True,” by Lorraine Feather and Dave Grusin, taking a sensitive approach on this lovely harp/vocal duet.

The band’s repertoire has grown to more 50 songs by now, so with any luck, Ladies Day Volume 2 won’t be far behind! Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for an equally exciting follow up to this impressive debut recording.

New York Jazz Stories, combining improvised music and story telling. Classic life stories retold beautifully. 5 New York stories, told to David Haney by the artists themselves, recorded and transcribed, and then retold by Haney with backing by Bernard Purdie and friends.  Donna J. aka Truly who was very close to the late Dominic Duval retells his story of meeting Charlie Mingus.
Special Musical Guest: Herb Robertson
Herb Robertson is an avant-garde jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer. He combines a thorough command of traditional and extended techniques with a prodigious imagination. Robertson recorded his initial leader album in 1985, and has since appeared on over 100 recording projects.

“Haney tells these tales with the dramatic flair of a Garrison Keillor..” –  Jerome Wilson Cadence Magazine

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.”  Cadence Magazine

I’m very happy to have worked with Dave Haney. That’s number one. Dave did a thing for me. He actually brought me back to creativity. Just doing things wild – I mean all of the unexpected stuff that you can possibly think of. And it got me thinking: wow, I haven’t done this in 30-35 years!” – Interview with Bernard Purdie, Oregon Music News

“Mr. Haney is a pianist drawn to experimental settings, and he creates a promising one here.”  The New York Times

BERNARD PURDIE the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 – the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name.
Liner Notes from Purdie “Soul To Jazz.” 3-96. With Brecker Brothers, ACT Music & Vision GMBH.

DAVID HANEY studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda. After several years of working with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney began applying  his skills as a working jazz artist, often paired up with some of the greatest minds in jazz improvisation, such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums in ten years for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records. David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney’s piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go” and “Clandestine” were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazzhas a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

ADAM LANE
By combining a disparate set of influences into a unique improvisational voice, Adam Lane has become recognized as one of the most original creative voices in contemporary jazz. His 2006 recording New Magical Kingdom, was recently featured in the Penguin Jazz Guide 1001 Best Records Ever Made, and his most recent recording, Ashcan Ranting received a myriad of critical praise including four stars in Downbeat.

“Lane’s music is genuine, accessible, fun. The music is deeply in touch with the essential pleasures of earwig-worthy tunes, fat bluesy grooves, and sheer tonal beauty.” (Downbeat Jan 2011)
