Haitian-born Pop Soul Artist Hervé Coeurto Return to Joe’s Pub at the Public

Haitian-born Pop Soul Artist Hervé Coeurto Return to Joe’s Pub at the Public

July 27, 2017

AN IMMIGRANT’S SONG

≈ Haitian-born Pop Soul Artist
Hervé Coeur

to Return to Joe’s Pub at the Public ≈

NEW YORK, July 27, 2017 “My work is a celebration of the spirit of the Haitian people, and a reflection on our strength in the face of incredible odds” said pop soul artist Hervé Coeur

Rooted in the land of his birth, Hervé connects his listeners to his past while also integrating the influences of the United States, France and India, all places he now calls home. His music is vibrant, engaging and ultimately uplifting, allowing the audience to transcend their differences and feel the heartbeat of humanity.

Hervé’s voice is warm, deep and ethereal and his lyrics akin to poetry. He blends musical genres — the French Chanson, 90’s Alternative American Rock and 60’s Motown and Soul — to create his unique style. He has connected and made lasting impressions on audiences in the U.S., most recently for the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations, and throughout Europe, most notably in France, where he has performed at the legendary L’Olympia and La Cigale in Paris.

Hervé will be making a repeat performance at Joe’s Pub at the Public at 425 Lafayette Street in New York City on Wednesday, August 30. His title song will be “Mr. Blue,” a tribute to his grandfather, who in the Haitian landscape of vast blue sky and blue ocean wove a dream of his family as infinite as the stunning beauty that surrounded them. Hervé’s exquisite expression in “Give Love” advocates for the absence of judgment and for a world where we give love that comforts not only our souls, but those of others.

Hervé: Mr. Blue live at Joe’s Pub, Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10009 on Wednesday, August 30. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets: $20; 212-967-7555 or Online HERE

About Eldar Djangirov

When Eldar Djangirov (pronounced john-’gear-ov) was signed to Sony Masterworks at the age of seventeen, the young pianist from Kansas City was already well known for his prodigious pyrotechnics and precocious knowledge of the bebop tradition. Along the way, he has had the good fortune to work with jazz masters Dr. Billy Taylor, Michael Brecker, Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, and many others. Through these and other wonderful musical experiences, Eldar continues to explore new frontiers through composing and performing, enabling him ultimately to realize his own musical vision.

Eldar has appeared at the Tokyo, Lionel Hampton, Vienna, and Monterey Jazz Festivals to name a few, and has toured extensively worldwide. High profile performances include the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall. Eldar has been seen on national TV including the 2000 and 2008 Grammy Awards, Late Night with Conan O’BrienCBS Saturday Early Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. He has also played with the world renowned NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

Eldar’s fifth recording, entitled Three Stories, is his first solo piano album and has garnered rave reviews:

  • “This is certainly jazz piano, but it’s the kind that belongs in a recital hall. Djangirov gets to the heart of every song” Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz
  • “Something special goes on her In Djangirov’s hands, the piano is a dramatic personage” Karl Stark, Philadelphia Inquirer
  • “Djangirov’s playing is simply flawless.” Jeff Tamarkin, All Music Guide

Jazz at the Maverick presents the CMS Improvisers Octet, exploring themes from some of Don Cherry’s visionary recordings as well as pieces by other composers that follow his lead into “world fusion.” The ensemble’s “In the Spirit of Don Cherry” performance will use pieces from these materials as launching pads for improvised interpretations that weave together jazz, world music and contemporary music.

The ensemble features musicians who played with Cherry including Karl Berger (piano, vibes, leader), Bob Stewart (tuba), Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Peter Apfelbaum (reeds, percussion), Graham Haynes (cornet), Ingrid Sertso (vocals); along with Adam Lane (bass) and Tani Tabbal (drums).

About Don Cherry

Noted for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, which began in the late 1950s, Don Cherry became a pioneer of world-fusion music in the 1960s. During this period, he incorporated various ethnic styles into his playing and composing. Cherry, who died in 1995, was essential to the creation and development of the Creative Music Studio™.  He inspired many of its methodologies, taught many CMS workshops and founded his legendary group, Codona, at CMS. A suite of his is included in CMS Archive Project Selections Vol. 2, released last year.

About The Creative Music Studio and Karl Berger

CMS engages musicians and listeners from all backgrounds and traditions, deepening and transforming their personal experience, understanding, and expression of music as a universal language. Over its 45 year history, hundreds of artists from all over the world representing nearly every style or genre of music have taught and performed at CMS. CMS was founded in 1973 by artistic director Karl Berger, composer, arranger, conductor, pianist, and vibraphonist, along with Ornette Coleman and Ingrid Sertso. The six-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll and recipient of numerous other awards in the US and Europe, Karl holds a PhD in music esthetics and has been a professor of composition and an artist-in-residence at universities, schools, and festivals worldwide. He has recorded and performed with Don Cherry, Lee Konitz, John McLaughlin, Gunther Schuller, Dave Brubeck, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Pharoah Sanders, and many others.

Gates Thomas: keys on Track #3 & #6

Lance Bryant and Christian Fabian met in the Lionel Hampton Big Band, and were brought up like Jason Marsalis in old school jazz roots. And they religiously practice the first commandment of the old school:
“Thou shalt give the audience a great show!” do for you? is proof that jazz roots grow into exciting new tunes, thrive in new times, and produce new jazz masters.

The album showcases new compositions by Bryant and Fabian, with a tune by Marsalis, and the Trio’s collective mastery and virtuosity is consistently front and center. These artists have not only mastered every corner of the tradition—they can do anything. The virtuostic Bryant on saxophone, a groovy solo by Fabian mixing funk and hip-hop flavor, expert punctuation by Marsalis on drums, lightning speed as quick and exciting as it is clean—they can do anything. Of A Certain Age by Bryant, with its nostalgic ballad feel and an artful performance by the Trio, could easily pass for a jazz standard.

The Band never loses its tightness…through impressive solo fills from Marsalis, Fabian’s gloriously clear pizzicato, pitch bends and grooves…Marsalis’ skillful Brazilian rhythms and timbres…unrelenting and funky drum and bass grooves, blazing saxophone melodies…the Band keeps surprising and amazing, and leaves us wowed.

Advance Praise For Strykin’ Ahead

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

The notion of moving forward by triangulating a space between creative and pragmatic imperatives is a consistent thread throughout Dave Stryker’s four decades in the jazz business, not least on Strykin’ Ahead, his 28th CD as a leader. Stryker augments his working trio of Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums with vibraphone player Steve Nelson, all on-board for a second go-round after their stellar contri- butions to last year’s Eight-Track II. Like the leader, Nelson is a preternaturally flexible and in-the-moment improviser with deep roots in the tradition who knows how to push the envelope without damaging the contents. Stryker internalized those imperatives on a 1984-1986 run with Brother Jack McDuff, and he received further invaluable training in the art of musical communication during a decade on the road with Stanley Turrentine, to whom he paid homage on the 2015 release Don’t Mess With Mister T.

In contrast to his Eight Track II conception of putting his spin on pop hits of his formative years, Stryker returns to his long-standing practice of presenting originals and reharmonized standards from the jazz and show music songbooks. “Shadowboxing” is a burning 14-bar minor blues; his well-considered chordal variations on Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints” proceed to a simmering 5/4 figure. Next is “New You” (a stimulating Stryker contrafact of the oft-played “There Will Never Be Another You”). He personalizes Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” set to Hunter’s insinuating bossa-funk groove. The title track “Strykin’ Ahead” has a Cadillac-racing-down-the-freeway-feel; he imbues the lovely melody of “Who Can I Turn To” with the full measure of his plush, inviting tone.

That Stryker knows his Albert King is evident on the slow-drag “Blues Down Deep,” which evokes wee-hours third sets in the inner city grills and lounges of Stryker’s apprentice years. He knows his bebop, too. On Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring,” the solo flights over Stryker’s “modernized” progressions transpire over Hunter’s drum-bass beats and crisp, medium-up four-on-the cymbal; on the chopbusting “Donna Lee,” all members springboard off a churchy vamp and Hunter’s funk-infused swing.

“I’ve always wanted to write vehicles that are fun and interesting to blow over,” Stryker says. “Trying to come up with a beautiful melody that lasts is very fulfilling. Writing is a big part of my voice in this music.” Stryker is too modest to say that his voice is also a big part of jazz, to which he’s devoted a career marked by consistent application of the values that he espouses. But that’s all right—I’ll say it for him.

Herb Robertson is an avant-garde jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer. He combines a thorough command of traditional and extended techniques with a prodigious imagination. Robertson recorded his initial leader album in 1985, and has since appeared on over 100 recording projects.

“Haney tells these tales with the dramatic flair of a Garrison Keillor..” –  Cadence Magazine

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

I’m very happy to have worked with Dave Haney. That’s number one. Dave did a thing for me. He actually brought me back to creativity. Just doing things wild – I mean all of the unexpected stuff that you can possibly think of. And it got me thinking: wow, I haven’t done this in 30-35 years!” – Interview with Bernard Purdie, Oregon Music News

“Mr. Haney is a pianist drawn to experimental settings, and he creates a promising one here.”  The New York Times

“When it comes to guitarists of his generation, Peter Bernstein stands head and shoulders

above the crowd.” – All About Jazz

Since 1989, Bernstein has been NYC’s go-to guitarist and has literally graced hundreds of recordings. Bernstein has also issued about a dozen of his own albums over the last twenty-five years.

As a sideman Peter appeared in groups led by Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Fathead Newman, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Lee Konitz, and Jimmy Cobb among many others.

Current projects include his album, “Monk“, a spin on the rich legacy of Thelonious Monk with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, a recently released solo record, “Solo Guitar – Live at Smalls“, and the highly acclaimed organ trio with organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart.

Karl Berger and the Creative Music Studio – IN THE SPIRIT OF DON CHERRY

creativemusic.org

General Admission $25                   Reserved Seating $45             Students $5

New York City native keyboardist, singer and songwriter Dave Keyes is a 30 year veteran of the Blues, Roots and Americana music scene. He has released five highly acclaimed albums under his own name, has been named the “Best Unsigned Artist” by Keyboard magazine, and also has been nominated by the Blues Foundation for the annual Pinetop Perkins best piano player award. His sixth album titled “The Healing” featuring Popa Chubby and many other special guests is slated for release in May.

Dave has played with some of the most important figures of blues, roots and folk music, having had long musical relationships with Odetta, David Johansen, Bo Diddley, rockabilly legend Sleepy LaBeef and gospel great Marie Knight among many others. In addition to his own solo gigs and gigs with the Dave Keyes Band, he currently can be found playing with Popa Chubby, Rock and Roll Queen Ronnie Spector, and gospel/blues innovator Alexis P. Suter and the Ministers of Sound.

Dave’s music finds its roots in deep blues, soul and rock and roll. These roots are the foundation of his recent albums and vibrant live shows. His recent albums have received 3 ½ stars from Downbeat magazine and are rambunctious sets of mostly original material that range from New Orleans second line funk to slow sensual blues, swaggering shuffles and boisterous rocking boogie woogie.

Dave ‘s live work both with his own band and with others, have earned him many kudos including the Dave Keyes Band winning the Blues Foundations International Blues Competition. His festival appearances under his own name include King Biscuit, Mississippi Valley, 3 appearances at France’s prestigious Cognac Blues Festival and annual appearances at Lugano, Switzerland’s Blues to Bop festival among many others. The last several years, Dave has also toured Europe extensively with both Popa Chubby and Ronnie Spector often doing double duty opening the shows as a solo artist.

In addition to those mentioned previously Dave has also worked as a sideman for a who’s who of roots music masters such as Eddy Clearwater, Big Jay McNeely, Tracy Nelson, Gladys Knight, Pam Tillis, Darlene Love, and the late great Ruth Brown, Lou Rawls and Levon Helm.

Over the last 20 years, Dave has worked in many roles as a band leader and conductor for both Broadway shows and TV, most notably conducting over 600 performances during the 6 year Grammy winning Broadway smash run of Smokey Joe’s Café. Dave also served as the musical director and band leader for the nationally syndicated NBC TV morning show “the Ainsley Harriott show”. Since then, he’s conducted and performed in the orchestras of Broadway musicals Lennon, Urban Cowboy and the Earth Wind & Fire inspired Hot Feet.

Dave also writes music for televison and the media. With saxophonist Chris Eminizer, their company Crave Music creates underscoring and songs that have appeared in numerous TV and films.Their work runs the gamut from emotional underscore, to vintage R&R, to contemporary Alternative and Indie Rock.

Harry Warren was the first major American song composer to write primarily for film. Every song on this CD is from a movie (except for the two songs I wrote). All of this music (except Nagasaki 1928) is from the 1930’s and 40’s. The songs are arranged in the hot swing style made popular by the great guitarist Django Reinhardt with violinist Stephane Grappelli and the Hot Club de Paris. The main body of work from Django Reinhardt is from the same time period. It was an easy marriage of styles taken from the same point in history on two different continents.

Harry Warren also happens to be Doug’s great uncle!

REVIEWS:
“Alexis Parsons” – List of Best CD’s of 2012
by DownBeat Magazine – January 2013

“All these songs of love have their anchor in the paradoxical world reflected  by Alexis Parsons’ self-titled series of tomes on the theme of conflicted, difficult arrangements (Self Release; 40:35 ★★★★).

Accompanied by pianist Frank Kimbrough, the bloom’s off as Parsons delivers an unmannered “The Winter Of My Discontent,” followed by a wistful look back with “Hello Young Lovers,” only to be followed up by a rare, upbeat swinger with “Just Squeeze Me.” The mood is melancholic, as the more seasoned Parsons’ breathy, desultory delivery reminds us that love is not a game to be entered into lightly.”

By John Ephland – “Sirens of Today” – DownBeat Magazine

“….she deserves as much credit for her storytelling abilities as she does for her singing.  She inhabits these songs as if they represent her very being, making Alexis Parsons an alluring listen from start to finish.”

By Dan Bilawsky – All About Jazz

“…she puts everything on the line with a piano and voice recording that would leave the less experienced artist fully exposed and ripe for a potentially critical cyber autopsy…”

‘Hendrik Meurkens has long doubled successfully on vibraphone and the chromatic harmonica. Now, more than 25 years into his recording career as a leader, he stands as arguably the most fluid and fluent jazz harmonica player this side of the great Toots Thielemans…’  –
JazzTimes May 2016
– Philip Booth

‘If harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens’ estimable discography has escaped your attention, this album of straight ahead tunes shows his harmonica to be more than just worthy. The array of vocabulary and technical proficiency he exhibits is truly impressive…..’  –  Downbeat May 2016 – Kirk Silsbee

‘…Harmonicus Rex is one of the purest bop inspired albums I’ve heard in a long time. There’s a love for the music that comes through in every carefully crafted twist and turn. Hendrik Meurkens and his magnificent band have done their homework and prove to the world that “straight ahead” bop fueled jazz is far from dead and is still open to new ideas. This is a stellar recording not to be missed.’

“Show me your friends and tastes, and I’ll tell you who you are!  Nancy Valentine attracts great musicians.  As for her tastes, her choices are Strayhornesque!  Most singers fear such demanding tastes.  Nancy, is one of a kind!”
Ray Carman – President – The Duke Ellington Society, (TDES) , New York Chapter

“ A long time ago, I met Nancy Valentine who was just an up-and-coming singer. I encouraged her to check out jazz singing as an artistic option and wow, did she ever follow through! This compilation of Billy Strayhorn compositions is a brilliant choice and she does them so well. And she was very smart to be backed by the “who’s who” of jazz players in New York, i.e., Dick Oatts, Harry Allen, Gary Smulyan, John di Martino, Tamir Hendelman, Joe Magnarelli, Warren Vache, etc., etc. What a great bunch of players!! Congrats, Nancy, and thank you for “following through”!
Bobby Shew – Jazz Trumpeter

“Nancy is a true Strayhorn aficionado.  In all my years in the music business. I know of no one more dedicated to trying to get it right!”
Don Sickler – Trumpeter, Arranger, Producer, Publisher

“Nancy Valentine is a consummate professional with a unique approach in her delivery of lyrics. She is also fun to work with and her singing encompasses perfection and warmth!”
Jim Czak – Engineer – Nola Recording Studios, NYC

“This wonderful debut recording featuring Nancy Valentine, one of our best jazz vocalists, together with a stellar group of outstanding jazz musicians, in their own right, will do much to bring about a greater awareness of Strayhorn’s gifts through the many beautiful arrangements by pianist, John di Martino, who, like Valentine, seems to understand the very essence and sheer brilliance of Billy Strayhorn’s compositions!”
Jack Kleinsinger – Highlights In Jazz

“Billy Strayhorn deserves having his music performed with respect and empathy – Nancy Valentine delivers exactly that!”
Joe Lang – Jersey Jazz

“At long last Nancy Valentine has committed her talent and fine, port-wine voice to permanence. Lovesome showcases her comprehensive musicality, with A-list musicians and great new arrangements.”
Marilyn Lester – Cabaret Scenes

“I’ve been waiting for an album like this for 20 years. In 1997, David Hajdu’s bio of Billy Strayhorn titled “LUSH LIFE” inspired me to produce an 8-hour tribute to the artistry of this musical genius. And now,
two decades later, we have this new album of Strayhorn songs by a young, talented and inventive singer! Thank you Nancy Valentine!!! “
David Kenney – Host – Everything Old Is New Again – WBAI 99.5 FM

“Several years in the making, Nancy has created a riveting and soulful tribute to one of our most iconic creators of classic American song – Billy Strayhorn.”
Russ Kassoff – Host –  The Jazz Deli –  WFDUHD2

“Thanks to Nancy for her tribute to the genius of Billy Strayhorn. Happy to add the cuts on “Lovesome” to our Pure Jazz Radio playlist.”

The Sound It Out concert series – resident at the historic hall of Greenwich House Music School (46 Barrow Street in New York City’s West Village) – has been celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. Its five-year span has seen Sound It Out present more than 200 concerts at Greenwich House featuring the leading lights in progressive jazz, from Wadada Leo Smith to Joe Morris, Craig Taborn to Tyshawn Sorey, Myra Melford to Matthew Shipp, Sylvia Courvoisier to Sara Serpa, and on and on. The New York Times has called Sound It Out “reliably rewarding… a beacon of adventurous programming in Greenwich Village,” while Time Out New York has described the concert series as “exemplary… one of the sharper jazz series in town.”

Following wonderful fifth-anniversary shows last week devoted to leading-edge spins on the music of Paul Motian and Herbie Nichols, the finale of Sound It Out’s celebration comes with a pair of concerts on Thursday June 29 and Friday June 30, both starting at 7:30pm. The Thursday concert will present pianist Matt Mitchell performing his kaleidoscopic solo arrangements of Tim Berne’s ensemble music in the first set, followed by the composer-saxophonist joining Mitchell for a full set of questing duo performances. Friday’s concert is “Monk on Guitars!” This very special event presents nine of the most exciting guitarists on the New York scene performing the ever-beloved music of Thelonious Monk, to help celebrate the great man’s centennial birthday. The ensemble features Rez Abbasi alongside Wilco’s Nels Cline and Julian Lage, David Gilmore, Miles Okazaki, Liberty Ellman, Steve Cardenas, Anders Nilsson and Mike Baggetta. The ace rhythm-section players are Stephan Crump and Jerome Harris on bass plus Colin Stranahan, Richie Barshay and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums.

Ticket proceeds from these shows go to help fund Greenwich House Music School, whose wonderful hospitality makes Sound It Out possible. Both the June 29 and 30 events will have post-show parties in the Greenwich House garden, with free wine. Advance tickets for both concerts are available via Eventbrite.

Thursday, June 29, 7:30pm: Matt Mitchell + Tim Berne

Matt Mitchell, piano; Tim Berne, alto saxophone

Tim Berne kicked off the Sound It Out series in June 2012 with his band Snakeoil. Now he helps celebrate the fifth anniversary of Sound It Out in league with Snakeoil bandmate Matt Mitchell. Matt’s new Screwgun album, førage, presents the compositions of Tim Berne like they’ve never been heard before, in deeply beautiful refractions for solo piano. David Torn, producer of førage, says: “Matt has created gorgeous tone poems with his arrangements. People who know Tim’s music will discover a whole new side of his art through this project, and people who have never heard his music now have an ideal entrée.” The night’s first set will see Matt play music from this solo album; the second half will bring Tim to the stage for a set of duo performances.

Tim was named one of New York City’s essential jazz icons by Time Out New York, while the UK’s Jazzwise underscored the stature of his recent music by declaring it “suffused with genuine humanity and more than a little wisdom.” Matt’s quartet album Vista Accumulation placed in the top 20 of NPR’s 2015 Critic’s Poll, with Point of Departure praising his pianism for the way it “synthesizes sounds and idioms with breathtaking ease.”

Friday June 30, 7:30pm: “Monk on Guitars!”

Rez Abbasi, guitar/bandleader; Nels Cline, Julian Lage, David Gilmore, Miles Okazaki, Liberty Ellman, Steve Cardenas, Anders Nilsson and Mike Baggetta, guitars; Stephan Crump and Jerome Harris, bass; Colin Stranahan, Richie Barshay and Mark Whitfield Jr, drums

No classic jazz composer’s art so lives and breathes night after night on bandstands across the country and around the world like that of Thelonious Monk. Melodically, harmonically, rhythmically and texturally, Monk’s music is always itself – fresh and accessible, surprising and renewable – even as it is interpreted by generation after generation, yielding new possibilities no matter the instrumental and stylistic variables. “Round Midnight,” “Straight, No Chaser,” “Epistrophy,” “In Walked Bud,” “Well, You Needn’t,” the list of timeless tunes goes on and on. This season’s grand finale, and the capper of Sound It Out’s four special events marking the fifth-anniversary month of the series, will be an all-star centennial celebration of Monk’s music – but, uniquely, via guitars.

The band, led by Rez Abbasi, features nine of New York’s top jazz guitarists – including the duo of Nels Cline & Julian Lage – plus five exceptional rhythm-section players. The set list will include not only “Round Midnight,” “Epistrophy” and “Crepuscule for Nellie” but also “Four in One,” “Evidence,” “Locomotive,” “Ask Me Now,” “We See,” “Jackie-ing,” “Bemsha Swing,” “Monk’s Mood” and “Light Blue.”

Those who want to know what sound goes into my music should come to New York and open their ears.” — Thelonious Monk

Sound It Out

The sequence of Sound It Out fifth-anniversary concerts began last week with “Motian in Motion!” (June 22), featuring 19 of New York’s most simpatico players performing music by the iconic drummer-composer Paul Motian. This wonder of a show featured an incredible revolving ensemble of Michaël Attias (alto saxophone/bandleader), Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Loren Stillman (alto sax); Dan Blake (soprano/tenor sax), Adam Kolker (tenor sax), Frank Kimbrough, Russ Lossing & Jacob Sacks (piano), André Matos & Ricardo Grilli (guitar) and Sean Conly, Lim Yang & Chris Lightcap (bass), as well as drummers Satoshi Takeishi, Jeff Davis, Vinnie Sperrazza, Harris Eisenstadt, Billy Mintz & Francisco Mela. The other fifth-anniversary show last week presented the return of singer Fay Victor’s Herbie Nichols Sung band (June 23), featuring her vocal re-creations of music by the great, if unsung, bop-era pianist-composer Herbie Nichols, who penned Billie Holiday’s “Lady Sings the Blues.” Fay’s hard-swinging quintet – with Michaël Attias (alto/baritone saxes), Anthony Coleman (piano), Ratzo Harris (bass) & Devin Gray (drums) – rocked the house.

            Founded and produced by
Bradley Bambarger, the Sound It Out concert series aims to further a progressive tradition by presenting performances of venturesome musicians from jazz and related genres at the acoustically ideal concert hall of Greenwich House Music School in New York’s West Village. Tim Berne’s Snakeoil kicked off the series in June 2012, with more than 200 Sound It Out concerts since. Iconic artists from Nels Cline to William Parker, Evan Parker to Ted Nash, Anat Cohen to Frank Kimbrough are among those who have performed in the series. Want to experience the sound of Sound It Out? One way is Live in Greenwich Village, an album released by the telepathic trio Renku, featuring saxophonist Michaël Attias, bassist John Hébert and drummer Satoshi Takeishi. Recorded over a two-night stand in the Sound It Out series, the album was released via Clean Feed Records in 2016. The Observer has dubbed Sound It Out “consistently excellent,” while the New York City Jazz Record named Greenwich House via Sound It Out one of the five best jazz venues in New York.

Greenwich House Music, established in 1905, has long been a focal point of the downtown arts scene, with pivotal figures from Henry Cowell, Edgar Varèse and John Cage to Meredith Monk, Joan La Barbara and Morton Subotnick associated with the institution. Singer-songwriter Steve Earle and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen have performed at Greenwich House, and jazz has a history there, too: Varèse and composer Earle Brown, collaborating with saxophonist-producer Teo Macero, hosted an improvisation session in 1957 with a group of players that included Charles Mingus and Art Farmer. More recently, the Jazz Composers Collective led by Frank Kimbrough and Ben Allison held important concerts at Greenwich House Music School in the early ’90s. Sound It Out carries on this spirit.

Singer-pianist Daryl Sherman is returning to the award winning Greenwich  Village jazz club Mezzrow with rising star twin brothers Peter and Will Anderson on a variety of reed instruments.

As Daryl explains, “Peter and Will Anderson are mega talents I first performed with for an Artie Shaw tribute produced at 59E59 Theaters. I wish I were twins, but even just the three of us have drawn crowds at Knickerbocker, St Peter’s Midday Jazz and concert venues. Eternal thanks to great hero/mentor Joe Temperley who inspired and encouraged my forays into piano/horn duo playing.”

Mezzrow 163 W 10th St off 7th Ave NYC 646-476-4346 or www.mezzrow.com

Manhattan favorite Daryl Sherman is no stranger to piano/ horn duo playing. Since her first outing with venerable baritone sax icon Joe Temperley, she’s appeared with other luminaries including Houston Person and Warren Vache. Listeners have also been buzzing about her special teaming with Aussie born quickly rising star, Adrian Cunningham. Both Adrian, the Anderson Twins (and even Daryl on occasion) appear with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, and David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band as well as their own groups. Their versatility with multiple instruments, genres and repertoire make a perfect match for Daryl’s organic, charismatic and quirky style.

Daryl Sherman’s CDs have been heard regularly on Cable TV Music Choice, Pandora, WNYC -FM, plus recent live interviews for her latest “My Blue Heaven” (Muzak) on WBGO “Singers Unlimited” and Tokyo’s NHK-FM “Jazz Tonight”.

“This wonderful debut recording featuring Nancy Valentine, one of our best jazz vocalists, together with a stellar group of outstanding jazz musicians, in their own right, John di Martino;Tamir Hendelman; Harry Allen; Warren Vache; Joe Magnarelli; Dick Oatts; Gary Smulyan; Victor Jones; Kenny (Kenneth) Washington; Dominick Farinacci; Boris Kozlov; Jay Leonhart; Marco Panascia and Tony Jefferson, will do much to bring about a greater awareness of Strayhorn’s gifts through the many beautiful arrangements by pianist, John di Martino, who, like Valentine, seems to understand the very essence and sheer brilliance of Billy Strayhorn’s compositions!”

“Several years in the making, Nancy, together with the beautiful piano work and arrangements by John di Martino and Tamir Hendelman and outstanding, heart-felt performances of Harry Allen; Warren Vache; Joe Magnarelli; Dick Oatts; Gary Smulyan and Dominick Farinacci all superbly supported by Boris Kozlov; Victor Jones; Jay Leonhart; Kenny (Kenneth) Washington; Marco Panascia and Tony Jefferson, have created a riveting and soulful tribute to one of our most iconic creators of classic American song – Billy Strayhorn.”
Russ Kassoff – Host –  The Jazz Deli –  WFDUHD2

“Thanks to Nancy for her tribute to the genius of Billy Strayhorn. Happy to add the cuts on “Lovesome” to our Pure Jazz Radio playlist.”

Performing Music From Her New CD

Welcome to Ladies Day!

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates the compositions of classic and contemporary jazz women with her upcoming CD, Ladies Day

On her sparkling new debut album, singer MJ Territo shows off her range and versatility, lending her voice to blues, bebop, bossa and ballads
With her new CD, Ladies Day, singer/composer/lyricist MJ Territo shines a light on a rare collection of tunes by great writers who just happen to be women. Mary Lou Williams, Abbey Lincoln, Patricia Barber, Peggy Lee and Blossom Dearie are just some of the classic icons of jazz and cult favorites represented in this collection of lesser-known songs that definitely deserve to be heard more often.

MJ Territo didn’t set out to focus on women; while making a pre-gig set list, she noticed that several of the songs she chose were written by women. That motivated her to dig deeper in search of material by female composers, and MJ soon realized she could put together a whole evening’s worth of great music from her discoveries. The variety of themes was part of the attraction: Sure, there were love songs, but also tunes about “resilience, self-awareness, self-reliance, and a curiosity about the wider world.”

Territo found herself thinking: “Hmmm … how about getting together a group of women jazz musicians to play them? Wouldn’t that be fun?” Pianist Linda Presgrave, who had released two CDs of compositions by women, immediately came to mind. “I knew Linda and I were on the same wavelength where women jazz composers were concerned,” MJ recalls. Impressed by bassist Iris Ornig’s album No Restrictions, the singer invited her on board. Rounding out the Ladies Day Quartet is drummer Barbara Merjan; MJ heard her at a club and recognized the sound she was looking for.

In picking the 14 tunes for Ladies Day, MJ’s debut album, the singer didn’t take an easy route: The CD is full of challenging material. But not only does MJ Territo prove she’s up to the challenge, she sounds like she’s having a ball while she’s at it.

Among the Ladies Day highlights are:

“No Time for Snoozin’,”  This Territo original features a piano intro that immediately engages the listener, as do the witty lyrics.

“Everything is Moving Too Fast,” Check out the excellent solos by Ornig and Merjan on this Peggy Lee tune,  along with the bluesy, bouncy vocal.

“Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado” shares a melody with “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Territo sings the Spanish lyric with deep feeling, and also demonstrates her chops in the universal language of vocalese.

The tight band is augmented by special guests on several tracks, including:

“Strange Fascination,” by Mary Lou Williams and Ada Moore, one of Territo’s favorites, which she found in the Mary Lou Williams Archives at Rutgers. Tenor saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, who has released a Williams tribute CD, guests on this tune.

Flutist Andrea Brachfeld is featured on Blossom Dearie’s piquantly amusing “I’m Shadowing You,” along with Territo’s flirty vocal.

Harpist Brandee Younger appears on “True,” by Lorraine Feather and Dave Grusin, taking a sensitive approach on this lovely harp/vocal duet.

The band’s repertoire has grown to more 50 songs by now, so with any luck, Ladies Day Volume 2 won’t be far behind! Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for an equally exciting follow up to this impressive debut recording.

Steve Slagle on Alto Sax and Flute leads a new recording with a great line-up of diverse players who inspire a wide range of music playing five new exciting originals for the first time, as well as two classics and one solo alto sax piece.

Alto Manhattan, is latino for the NYC neighborhood steve lives in-‘upper manhattan’or ‘the heights’ and the program here is: FAMILY—This composition for 2 saxes+2 drums is pure jazz, with Cuba and Africa in the make-up of what is a big family. Note Roman Diaz, from Cuba, and his great sound on Conga, as well as the whole group inter-play–all in the family! ALTO MANHATTAN, song #2 is so nice they play it twice! The first fiery take is with quartet and then later down the line Joe Lovano is added on tenor to create another harmony ( A.M.) Bill Stewarts contribution,on both takes, proves,as many know, he is one of a kind as a drummer.

I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW is a lyrical alto blues oriented song that allows everyone to ‘let their hair down’. Bassist Gerald Cannon gets all the way down here!

BODY+SOUL showcases Steve’s Alto alone, joining the canon of sax players who have attempted this classic ballad as a solo piece. Done in one take, Steve references Monk,Duke,’Bird and Ornette (twice!) within the structure of this classic song.

INCEPTION came about after Slagle recently was asked to play with McCoy Tyners Quartet. This challenging McCoy composition eventually opens up into an extended minor blues. This is the first take of the date and notice the immediate empathy of all the players! I GUESS I’LL HANG MY TEARS OUT TO DRY, a beautiful ballad starting with the often forgotten verse, is given the romantic treatment here..Lawrence Fields piano mastery helps make this a shining version of a deep song.

Finally Alto Manhattan ends with two flute pieces which are also very central to the sound of the record. HOLIDAY, the most thru-composed piece of the date,Slagle first wrote with harmonica master Toots Thielman in mind and dedicates this first recording of the song in memory of maestro Toots. Joe Lovanos G mezzo soprano along with the sound of the flute really takes the listener on a musical vacation.

And with that, we have VIVA LA FAMALIA to end the proceedings — a jam for 2 drums, bass and the flute lead. A fresh, original first take played spontaneously at the end of this unique and outstanding recording. Yes,Viva la Famalia!!
