His latest recording, the album Five Roads, has garnered wide acclaim for his ability to, as one critic wrote, “keep the sauces simmering.”

Pianist and composer David Haney and legendary drummer Bernard Purdie will bring another performance of New York Jazz Stories to Joe’s Pub.

New York Jazz Stories combines swinging, electrifying music, featuring Bernard Purdie and company along with some highly entertaining stories retold by David Haney. These are real stories told directly to Haney, transcribed and brought to life with a soundtrack by “Pretty” Purdie and friends.

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” -Cadence Magazine

BERNARD PURDIE, the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie moved to New York in 1960 and soon after recorded his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970, which marked the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has worked with a vast array of artists, such as Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren, and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums.

DAVID HANEY studied composition with Czech American composer Tomas Svoboda and piano with jazz pianist Eddie Wied. As music editor for Cadence Magazine, David interviewed over 60 jazz artists for the Jazz Stories project. The following artists have worked and recorded with David: Roswell Rudd, Julian Priester, John Tchicai, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell, Bud Shank, Wolter Weirbos, Han Bennink, Andrew Cyrille, Bernard Purdie, Marvin Bugulu Smith, Gerry Hemingway, Dylan Van de Schiff, Buell Neidlinger, Dominic Duval, Adam Lane, Michael Bisio, Paul Blaney, Perry Robinson, Johannes Bauer. As a leader, Haney has over 20 albums on CIMP-USA, Cadence-USA, SLAM-UK, NoSe-So-Argentina, La Gorda-Argentina, and Canada Jazz Studio-Canada.

Biggish Band and
Jason Marshall Big Band

shem.gif
Grammy honored JC Hopkins and his Biggish Band will be playing musical host at the legendary Minton’s Playhouse for ringing in the New Year and no better place to do it than at the birthplace of bebop. The Biggish Band has backed a number of musical legends in its time including Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, Tony Bennett, Jazzmeia Horn and Jon Hendricks to name a few. The band’s newest crop of stellar talent include Joy Hanson who has a voice that reminds one of a young Ella Fitzgerald, Vanisha-Arleen Gould whose soulful sound has drawn comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse and Shawn Whitehorn who has a gorgeous baritone voice and immaculate stage presence. The very special guest sharing the stage with the band that night is none other than Dap-King Binky Griptite. Binky has been a mainstay for the legendary band the Dap-Kings and has backed such greats as Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones. Binky has a soulful sound on both voice and guitar and can get any room of folks moving and groovin’. An altogether fantastic night for creating memories to last the whole year.

Every Saturday Night at the Legendary Minton’s Playhouse –  JC Hopkins Biggish Band: Jazz Fridays Jazz-Star Series and Big Band Sundays

At Minton’s, you’re part of the choir. There’s this part in “Moanin'” where—not in the original version but in this one, arranged by JC Hopkins and which his band, JC Hopkins’ Biggish Band, plays—the horn section shouts out, call-and-response style. This night, we get in on it, too. Bum be de BOMP. HEY! Be dop bop be da BOMP. HEY! Bum be de BOMP. HEY! And it’s not anger any longer, but joy.

MJ Featured In Hot House Magazine

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed.
– Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.”
—Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!

Award winning soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom brings her Early Americans Trio with long-time bandmates Bobby Previte and Mark Helias to the Avalon Lounge for the first time. With over 50 years of shared musical history together this trio has something special to say. “Playing in threes” has always held a special fascination for jazz improvisers. It holds out the possibility that something can always be slightly off balance and that’s just what fires the imagination of players like these. The trio’s Early Americans release won the 2018 Grammy award for best surround sound album. Bloom’s been leading bands into new creative territory for over 40 years bringing her lyrical and provocative music to venues as diverse as the Kennedy Center and the National Air & Space Museum’s Einstein Planetarium.  Helias and Previte, mature composer/ bandleaders in their own right with years of recording and live performance experience add depth and resonance to every spontaneous choice they make. Don’t miss these fearless American originals for an evening of high wire improvisation over the groove.

PRESS RELEASE

 Mike Glick
Generations Music
mikeglick@earthlink.net

Snack Cat & Generations – A Family Affair

In another lifetime Mike Glick swapped first LP’s with Lucinda Williams, had Pete Seeger call him “one of the best songwriters going,” and was mentioned in the record notes for avante garde classical composer Frederic Rzewski’s award-winning piano composition, “36 Variations on The People United Will Never Be Defeated.” Then he all but disappeared from the musical map for more than 20 years……

Now he’s back, slowly re-building his music career, culminating in his soon-to-be-released CD, “Alternative Facts & Other White Lies.” Accompanied by his son, Aleksi, and superb vocalist, Lindsey Wilson, he will be the first half of a program Friday, December 13, 8 pm at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center with his son.

Aleksi Glick’s 8-piece R&B group, Snack Cat, recently signed to Ropeadope Records, will make up the second half of the program.

Aleksi, whose own musical career inspired his father to resume his, is a high energy, high-level jazz and blues guitarist who has studied, and now played, with such guitar luminaries as Vic Juris and Paul Bollenbeck.

Snack Cat itself is a band made up of first class musicians with multiple credits of their own, with Jeff Koch (bass), Pete Ayres (Vocals), Chantal Mitvalsky (Vocals), Nathan Ellman-Bell (Drums), Seth Weaver (backup vocals/trombone), David Engelhard (sax), and Sharik Hasan- (keys).

Watch Accidental Orchestra Perform Yesod

shem.gif

On the Winter Solstice, December 21, 2019, Michael Moss’ Accidental Orchestra presents the last four movements of Qabbala::Entanglement, a twelve movement suite inspired by Michael Moss’ long study of Eastern mythology, physics, and Jungian analytical psychology. Using improvisation over an extended compositional structure Moss uses each of the 12 movements to express a “sephira” or “limb” of the Tree of Life.

The Accidental Orchestra is a cross between a big band and an orchestra. It is jazz from the 21st century standing on and extending the tradition.  “Moss’ astute penchant for melding the outside parameters of jazz with imaginative compositions and a wide-ranging improvisational platform delivers the knockout punch (Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz, June 7, 2018).”

The Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a pool of the most exciting improvising artists on the New York scene. Playing in this performance are Rosi Hertlein, Elinor Speirs, Carol Buck, Lenny Mims, Brian Groder, Waldron Mahdi Ricks, Libby Schwartz, Peter Zummo, JD Parran, Elliot Levin, Michael Lytle, Ras Moshe Burnett, Dave Sewelson, Steve Cohn, Alexis Marcelo, John Menegon, Bob Meyer, and Warren Smith.

Michael Moss released the Accidental Orchestra’s first cd, HELIX, in 2018 on 4th Stream Records with two compositions–The Old One and C# or Bb. HELIX had the honor of being voted one of the best albums of 2018 by Avant Music News, received enthusiastic world-wide reviews which may be found at
https://m2-theory.com/helix-reviews and can be downloaded at Hearnow.

“Helix is powerful, amazing, unique, genuinely creative music.” Ron J. Pelletier (Jazz From Gallery 41)

QABALLAH::ENTANGLEMENT is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support, to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond.

Minton’s Playhouse
presents

Every Saturday Night at the Legendary Minton’s Playhouse –  JC Hopkins Biggish Band: Jazz and Comedy, Fridays Jazz-Star Series and Big Band Sundays

Hopkins’ Biggish Band is at the nucleus of the programming with a weekly Saturday residency that features a ten piece band and an array of stunning up and coming vocalists including Vanisha-Arleen Gould, Joy Hanson, Shawn Whitehorn and Nico Sarbanes. The Biggish Band, whose sound merges Mingus with Billy May, has been fertile ground for great talent such as the likes of Norah Jones, Jazzmeia Horn, Madeleine Peyroux and Brianna Thomas who all have been featured with regularity in the group.

NEW YORK TIMES

J. C. Hopkins Biggish Band (Friday and Saturday) Led by the bandleader, songwriter and producer for which it’s named, the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band has always been a friend to vocalists, and in this engagement, the group pays a centenary tribute to Billie Holiday. Among the many singers assembled are Brianna Thomas, Charenee Wade, Charles Turner and Jazzmeia Horn. From 6 to 11 p.m., Minton’s, 206 West 118th Street, Harlem,212-243-2222, mintonsharlem.com. ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

Warren Wolf – vibraphone
Jared Gold – Hammond B3
McClenty Hunter – drums

In 2013, Dave Stryker hit on an album concept based on instrumental interpretations of classic r&b and pop tunes from his high school years in Omaha, Nebraska. The album, entitled Eight Track, proved to be a career breakthrough for the guitarist some three decades after his entry into bigtime jazz as a sideman with organist Jack McDuff. The radio and sales reaction to the first Eight Track CD led to two further volumes – and the result, says Stryker, has been “not only fun, but musically rewarding. Playing these classic melodies from the ’70s has been a great way to connect with people and bring more people to the music, whether they remember the songs or are just discovering them. I enjoy the challenge of finding my way into these tunes by putting my own stamp on them through the arrangements and playing.” “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Pretzel Logic,” “Too High,” “This Guy’s In Love With You” – any and all of these indelible songs could be part of the Stryker sets this week, with special guest Warren Wolf on vibes. PEARRING SOUND

PEARRING SOUND  “Nothing But Time”
(Self Produced) Street Date: October 4,2019

JEFF PEARRING ─ Alto Saxophone,

Time to wonder, time to wander, time to listen, time to sing… but no time for jive.  In the clean air of Manitou Springs, Colorado, with the Garden of the Gods his backyard, alto saxophonist Jeff Pearring grew up in harmony with nature, and has remained, amidst the hustle of the music scene and bustle of 21stcentury Brooklyn, in tune with himself.

As the West was a place for settlers to become who they wanted to be and discover who they were, so music affords a realm to bare and share our spirit, to find beauty in our surroundings and share our joy.  Sagacious guides are always helpful to explorers, and at an early age, after realizing he was not cut out for the trumpet, Jeff found the propitiously-named Bud Reed, who steered him to the saxophone.  Jeff landed in New York in 2002, after playing in college with ska/reggae and blues bands, wanting more of a shaping effect on the music he played. In 2005 he met the inimitable Connie Crothers, whose prime pedagogical tenet was to help musicians unearth their own inner voice.  The results of their collaboration can be heard on the 2015 live recording, True Story.  Jeff Pearring has found his sound.

In fact, Pearring Sound is the rubric under which Jeff assembles various combinations of New York improvisers, pairing players of different generations, one such being a Double Trio, inspired by Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz double quartet, which includes, in addition to two thirtysomething altoists, two septuagenarian drummers.  The singular trio heard here is filled out by stalwart bassist Adam Lane, who has performed internationally with everyone from Bernard Purdie to John Tchicai and whose widely acclaimed Full Throttle Orchestra recordings on Clean Feed mark him as a leading bandleader/composer in his own right, and relative newcomer drummer Tim Ford, who meets the music’s twists and turns with do-or-die Bed Stuy élan and aplomb. The group has performed regularly for the past year, and it shows; each of the three can fly fancy free, knowing the others have his back and will bring him home.

This studio recording offers Jeff the opportunity not only to showcase the group’s telepathic improvisation and sense of spontaneous composition, but also utilize modern technology to extend its sonic dimensions.  All the tracks, all group originals save Duke Ellington’s composition Blue Pepper, were created in the moment—no overdubbing—in two sessions, recorded 15 days apart.  At the first, with Lane playing electric bass, the empathetic collaboration of engineer Jon Rosenberg selectively enhanced harmonies and rhythms implicit in the playing.  The second gave free rein to the trio to stretch their acoustic sounds au naturel.Together, they take the listener on a hitherto uncharted journey through space and time.

In a time when the music world is brimming with budding virtuosos who know and play everything, it’s a breath of fresh air to encounter someone who knows and plays himself.  If you haven’t already, it’s time to listen to Jeff Pearring.

Imagine receiving an invitation to a gala featuring John Coltrane, Sigmund Freud, and Faust. Bruce Forman’s “The Red Guitar” is all that and more. It draws on Forman’s decades of experience as a formidable jazz guitarist and his considerable skill as a storyteller and teacher, producing a work that is greater than the sum of its dazzling parts. Enlisting the full power of the jazz idiom and integrating it with seasoned and provocative story-telling, he confronts the dilemma of artistic obsession face-to-face—by creating a work of art that simultaneously explores and demonstrates the hold that music has over its most ardent followers. The Red Guitar: Do you play it…or does it play you?

One of the most engaging vocalists around….always in evidence a strong jazz influence in his vocalizing and choice of material.
Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

Connects emotionally with a song’s sentiments and actions. One jazz singer for whom words aren’t just syllables on which to hang notes….they’re the very center of the song.
Mark Dundas Wood, Bistro Awards.Com

Cassara…gives a song a unique distinctive flavor all its own… incredibly intimate.

Featuring original arrangements of holiday classics selected from Big Band Holiday concerts spanning from 2015 to 2018, nine-time GRAMMY Award winner and Pulitzer Prize winner Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO are joined by an all-star assortment of guest vocalists, including Veronica Swift, Denzal Sinclaire, Catherine Russell, Audrey Shakir, and the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin.
Franklin’s stirring solo piano rendition of “O Tannenbaum,” a surprise performance during the 2015 edition of Big Band Holidays, has never before been released. Other standout tracks include Veronica Swift’s vibrant recording of the classic “(Everybody’s Waitin’ For) The Man with the Bag” and Denzal Sinclaire’s jazzed-up version of “We Three Kings.” An instant classic that captures the magic of an annual NYC holiday tradition, BIG BAND HOLIDAYS II serves up timeless nostalgia just in time for the most wonderful time of the year.

If You’re Going To The City: Sweet Relief Tribute To Mose Allison
(With DVD)
Mose Allison’s singular style – a unique blend of jazz and blues, his incisive humor, and knack for distilling deep themes into simple potent lyrics made him a major influence on a generation of musicians. It didn’t take much convincing for the producers to bring a host of top artists onboard for the tribute collection, If You’re Going to the City, including Taj Mahal, Robbie Fulks, Jackson Browne, The Tippo Allstars feat. Fiona Apple, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, Chrissie Hynde, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Raitt, Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson, Peter Case, Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin, Anything Mose!, Frank Black, and Amy Allison with Elvis Costello. Each artist chose a favorite Mose Allison song to interpret. Mose’s daughter Amy Allison teamed up with musician/producer Don Heffington to honor her father’s rich catalog of songs. “We were talking about my dad’s legacy and thinking about all the musicians who were fans, and how a tribute album featuring some of these artists would be cool, especially if it were to benefit a worthy cause. Don said “Let’s put it together ourselves” and introduced the idea (and me) to his friend producer/engineer/studio owner Sheldon Gomberg. And so it began…”

Fleetwood Mac
Before The Beginning, Vol. 1: Live 1968
(180 Gram Vinyl, Gatefold LP Jacket)
Triple 180gm vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. Live archive release. Live recordings from 1968 and 1970 have recently been discovered of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Not much is known about the live recordings. Discovered unlabelled and by pure luck in the US, their era has been authenticated by experts of the bands blues origins. Fleetwood Mac has given their full approval for the release of these tapes. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac had a short but hugely prolific career, with the 1968 recording being at the early stages of the band, and the 1970 recording will, in contrast, be one of their final shows before Peter left the band. The recordings were discovered in incredibly good condition considering they have been untouched for over 40 years, they have been restored and provide a vital insight into the very earliest incarnation of one of the world’s biggest bands.

Chrissie Hynde
& The Valve Bone Woe Ensemble

Valve Bone Woe

Chrissie Hynde has a new album ‘Valve Bone Woe’ release date September 6th, 2019. The album features reinterpretations of classic material penned by Brian Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Hoagy Carmichael, Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane, Nick Drake, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Hynde’s former partner Ray Davies.

The record was seemingly inspired by pre-war jazz sounds, and was recorded with the Valve Bone Woe Ensemble at London’s AIR Studios.

I’m not hugely interested in branching out into other musical genres, being a devout rock singer as such, but jazz is something I grew up around (thanks to my bro) and I’ve always had a soft spot for it. I often bemoan what I regard as a decline in melody in popular music and I wanted to sing melodies.

The Rolling Stones
Bridges To Buenos Aires
(180 Gram Vinyl,
Limited Edition, Colored Vinyl, Blue)

Triple 180gm blue vinyl LP pressing. Bridges To Buenos Aires is the latest concert film release from The Rolling Stones’ archive. The full-length show from their five night sell-out residency at the River Plate Stadium in Argentina’s capital city has been restored in full and features a very special guest appearance from Bob Dylan on ‘Like A Rolling Stone’. Filmed on April 5th 1998, by this point, the band had played to over two million people on the first two legs of the tour in North America and Japan.

The Grateful Dead
Ready Or Not
2 LPs 180-Gram
Limited Edition
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2019 live archive release featuring nine unreleased performances from the early ’90s, presenting what the next Grateful Dead studio album may have been. The collection focuses on the best unreleased live versions of these late-period gems, all mastered from the original digital soundboard tapes. Recorded live between 1992 and 1995, Ready Or Not spotlights performance by the final Grateful Dead lineup: Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, and new keyboardist Vince Welnick.

Beck
Hyperspace
(Gatefold LP Jacket)
Vinyl LP pressing. 2019 release. Hyperspace’s new dimensions in sound are the result of Beck’s most collaborative efforts to date. Seven of the album’s 11 tracks – including singles “Uneventful Days” and “Saw Lightning” – features co-writing/co-production from Pharrell Williams. “See Through” is co-written/co-produced by frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin, “Stratosphere” features back-up from Chris Martin, the album’s title track features guest vocals from Terrell Hines, and “Die Waiting” features backing vocals from Sky Ferreira.

Iron Maiden
Number of the Beast
Limited 180gm black vinyl LP repressing of the Metal band’s 1982 album, their third overall and first with vocalist Bruce Dickinson.

SOL YAGED AND TINO VALPA
Your Wish Is My Command
White Vinyl $19.99

This recording has one of the oddest matchups that I have heard in quite some time. The talented clarinetist Sol Yaged (1922-2019) was famous (or infamous) for often sounding like Benny Goodman. Steve Allen used to drop his name as a punchline now and then, saying that Yaged sounded more like Goodman than BG did. Although he was active in New York until shortly before his death at the age of 97 Yaged, who first recorded in 1947, was believed to have made no records after 1968 when he was still just 46.
In 2018 he met Tino Valpa, a punk rock guitarist who befriended him. Valpa was intrigued by the ancient clarinetist who still had plenty of spirit. Since it had been 50 years since his last recording, when Valpa suggested that they record together, Yaged was enthusiastic. Valpa wrote three songs which he recorded with the clarinetist plus “As Time Goes By.” The music is a very energetic brand of punk rock with Valpa (who dominates on overdubbed guitar, bass, drums and vocals), Yaged (a bit low in the mix), 90-year old vibraphonist Harry Sheppard, a small horn section, and a pianist. Other than out of curiosity, one cannot imagine many Syncopated Times readers being interested in these performances. It is a pity that Valpa did not try to reach Yaged halfway instead of just adding him to his rockish music, but the four songs only total 15 minutes.
While visiting Yaged, Valpa discovered that he had an unreleased tape of a live performance from 1972 that features the clarinetist and Sheppard playing with pianist Johnny Knapp, bassist Ray Carl, and drummer Mousey Alexander. The six swing standards, performed four years after Yaged’s “final” recording date, are full of spirit, high energy and excellent playing. The emphasis is on faster tempos with the highlights including “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Stompin’ At The Savoy” and “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise.”  Yaged, Sheppard and Knapp (who occasionally sounds a little like Dave Brubeck) are inspired by each other and the crowd, taking extended solos that the audience clearly appreciated. It is for this session (which clocks in at around 48 minutes) that the LP will be of greatest interest.

Jazz Photography Book
by Ken Franckling
Jazz in the Key of Light $59.95

Veteran jazz writer and photographer Ken Franckling’s hardcover book, deemed a collector’s item by its buyers,  is subtitled Eighty of our Finest Jazz Musicians Speak for Themselves. It illuminates more than 80 musicians through a different format than the traditional fine art photography book. It pairs its featured jazz artists, in performance or moments of personal reflection, with essential quotes from interviews Franckling had with those musicians for a variety of mainstream and music publications over four decades. The spotlighted musicians range from legends Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan to a variety of today’s rising stars in jazz, including bassist and singer Nicki Parrott, singer Gregory Porter, and alto saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenón. Newport Jazz Festival founding producer George Wein wrote the Foreword.

Several of the photographs are historical captures. One shows saxophonist and composer Benny Carter at a master class with student musicians at Harvard in April 1988, as he listens to freshman Joshua Redman play a solo. Another is of the legendary Basie band drummer Jo Jones at his last gig, which was held quite ironically at the Last Call Saloon in Providence, RI. in November 1984. Jones died in September 1985.

ORIGINAL VINYL RECORDS CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The notable Hudson Valley record store has made giant strides during its first year.

A year ago Jim Eigo, a super publicist who runs Jazz Promo Services, started Original Vinyl Records along with his wife Pam Eigo. “I’m an old record store lover who goes all the way back to the late 1960s/early ‘70s, working in retail. I love being around records, talking about records, and meeting people who love records.”

Eigo’s years of experience have resulted in his store having a warm and friendly atmosphere, a very wide selection of recordings, and a stock that features used and new Lps, CDs, 45s, 78s, DVDs, cassettes and even 8-tracks plus posters and memorabilia.

Original Vinyl Records (whose motto is “Where Old Records Go To Live”) is located at 314 State Route 94 South #7, Warwick Crossing, Warwick, NY 10990-3380. It is open fulltime on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday while, on other days, it is open by appointment only. “If a dealer or a collector calls me for the other days and wants to spend time looking through the collection, we can work it out,” says Eigo.

The birth of the store occurred when Jim Eigo’s son graduated from college and Jim’s wife Pam said that he could stay in an office that was overflowing with Jim’s records, posters and memorabilia. “I needed somewhere to put them, which led me to thinking of starting my own record store in the Hudson Valley. Right up the road was a little strip mall that had a store for rent. My wife thought that I was crazy but she had told me to put the records somewhere!”

Jim Eigo has had many years of experience with record stores including a long association with Happy Tunes Records where he ran the jazz department, had important positions at the Soho Music Gallery and J&R Music World, and co-founded the successful mail order business Daybreak Express. An enthusiastic supporter of all styles of jazz and music in general, Eigo was one of the early innovators in utilizing E-mails for marketing and has worked with a countless number of musicians, clubs and labels during his 20 years of running Jazz Promo Services.

He is quite enthusiastic about Original Vinyl Records. “We are building up our reputation and people are finding out about the store, which also sells recordings through mail order. Last spring we hosted a special series, Talking Vinyl, that featured such notables as Scott Wentzel from Mosaic Records, Tito Puente’s biographer (Joe Conte) and Arnold Jay Smith giving informative talks about their experiences. It was all filmed and can be seen on our You Tube channel. We hope to have more special events in the future. The record store is a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun and customers enjoy the wide variety of music we sell, the prices, and the atmosphere.”

Incorporating traditional jazz, hip hop, and Japanese melodies in his music, he creates a tapestry that is distinctly Shunzo Ohno to inspire and unite audiences globally.

A decade on from making the dream ‘jazz’ move to New York, German-born saxophonist Tobias Meinhart presents his new project with some of the most interesting names on the current scene: Eden Ladin (piano), Matt Penman (bass) and Obed Calvaire (drums). They will perform music from the saxophonist’s latest album “Berlin People” (Sunnyside Records) which was praised by Downbeat Magazine as “alluring and suspenseful”.

A veteran of the European jazz environment, since moving to the Big Apple, the Tobias Meinhart has become a much in-demand player in the city’s vibrant jazz scene with regular engagements at various venues and appearing with the likes of Kurt Rosenwinkel and Ingrid Jensen.

Atmospheric, full of energy and characterized by strong unison lines, his music has been described as: “A mix that sparkles like a diamond” (Birdistheworm) and “Gracefully compelling, with a fine melodic sense” (Jazzthetik)

Steve Tyrell
The Café Carlyle
35 E 76th Street, (212) 744-1600
Through December 31

shem.gif

This is Steve Tyrell’s 15th year at the Carlyle, and every time I walk out – invariably feeling better than when I walked in (not that I was even feeling bad to begin with) – I leave feeling not that I’ve just been to a concert, but that I’ve just had a warm and friendly holiday dinner with my family. The sentiment factor is built in, and it’s always effective; it’s always a highly-satisfying meal of musical comfort food. This year, he’s celebrating the decade and a half at the Carlyle with a retrospective of previous shows and albums, including “This Guy’s in Love with You” and “I Say a Little Prayer” from his Bach to Bacharach set, which was my favorite of his albums until the 2018 A Song for You (which includes the wonderful “To Be Loved,” also heard at the Carlyle), since Tyrell singing Bacharach is like hearing a man speak in his native language. He gave us an advance preview of his forthcoming Ray Charles tribute album Shades of Ray (I’m just glad he didn’t call it “Fifty Shades of Ray”), including Percy Mayfield’s “Danger Zone” and Eddy Arnold’s “You Don’t Know Me.” (Though I have to confess the latter whetted my appetite for the album I have always wanted him to do of great Country Music standards. After all, he is from Texas.) He’s never disappointing, although I was surprised that he didn’t perform his new single, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a perfect song for this era when we’re all waxing nostalgic regarding the late Fred Rogers. And besides which, the corner of Madison Avenue and 76th Street is a perfect neighborhood to sing about.

Snack Cat & Generations – A Family Affair   December 2, 2019
