Dennis Greene, a founding member of Sha Na Na (http://www.shanana.com/history.htm) , a band that became famous in the 1970s for its simultaneously nostalgic and comedic approach to the rock ’n’ roll of the 1950s, died on Saturday at a hospital near his home in Dayton, Ohio. He was 66.

His death was confirmed by his brother Gerald, who did not specify a cause.

Sha Na Na, which started as an a cappella group while Mr. Greene was an undergraduate at Columbia University, drew a large following after playing at the Woodstock music festival (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/w/woodstock_music_festivals/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) in 1969. Mr. Greene often performed wearing a gold lamé suit and sang lead on a number of the group’s songs.

The group released a handful of albums in the 1970s and had a syndicated television variety show, also called “Sha Na Na,” for several years starting in 1977. In 1978, Sha Na Na, with Mr. Greene singing lead, performed the 1958 Little Anthony and the Imperials hit “Tears on My Pillow” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKe7oTQeFkI) in the film version of the Broadway musical (http://www.nytimes.com/theater/venues/broadway.html?inline=nyt-classifier) “Grease,” which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Mr. Greene left Sha Na Na after 15 years to get a master’s degree at Harvard and a law degree at Yale. He told an interviewer in 1998 that he did not regret the decision.

“Being a rock star was never something that was particularly interesting to me,” he said. “It was a great job. I loved the singing part. The byproducts, unfortunately, were exhausting travel and the ongoing-forever politics of being in a business controlled by young adults.”

Frederick Dennis Greene was born in Manhattan on Jan. 11, 1949, and grew up in the Bronx. He attended a Roman Catholic high school before receiving a scholarship to the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, and from there went to Columbia, where he joined a group called the Columbia Kingsmen. Since there was already a band called the Kingsmen (known for their hit version of “Louie Louie” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RZJ4ESU52U) ) they changed their name to Sha Na Na, inspired by nonsense syllables in the Silhouettes’ 1958 hit “Get a Job.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysKhbaLyIFw)

Mr. Greene went on to become a vice president of Columbia Pictures and then a law professor, most recently at the University of Dayton.

Sha Na Na still performs, though most of the original members have left the group.

Besides his brother Gerald, Mr. Greene is survived by another brother, Michael.

Mr. Greene told The Columbus Dispatch in 2001 that he was still recognized for his years with Sha Na Na.

“I still am asked for autographs,” he said, “but these days it seems it’s always for their mother.”

** Concert review: Saxophonist Phil Woods ends playing career on a high note

By Rick Nowlin / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Friday evening at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild promised to be historic, with alto saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods reprising the classic album “Charlie Parker With Strings,” backed by a local trio and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Well, it was indeed historic but for an unforseen reason: Before his last number, Mr. Woods, best known to the casual music listener as the soloist on Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are,” announced that it would be his last number. Ever.

The 83-year-old Mr. Woods, who uses oxygen — at the beginning he jokingly referred to his tank as “my amplifier” and later noted he has emphysema — said that he was retiring from the stage due to health reasons. That being the case, he went out with a bang, and if he was having any trouble breathing it surely didn’t show in the performance, which was so solid throughout that I had some trouble picking out highlights.

From the opening “Just Friends,” Mr. Woods was in firm command of the horn, combining tone with fluidity in a situation that necessarily had to be tight. The tunes did a lot of modulating, which likely was a bit of a challenge because the PSO people were reading music. Or perhaps not.

Over his career Mr. Woods has often worked with a second horn player, and this time it was trumpeter Jamie Moore, who performed several selections from albums recorded by Clifford Brown and Donald Byrd. Mr. Moore’s tone was similarly clear and focused, especially on “Stardust.” Probably the most stretched-out tune was Neil Hefti’s “Repetition,” during which the two horn players also allowed pianist Alton Merrell, and drummer Tom Wendt their chances to shine.

Mr. Woods made the retirement announcement, including sharing part of his history, just before he and Mr. Moore went into the closer, Gerry Mulligan’s “Rocker,” during which Mr. Woods threw in a phrase from “Let’s Fall in Love” and bassist Paul Thompson soloing in the upper register.

If I had a criticism of the show it was that at times the strings at times cut through the mix too much, slightly overpowering the rest of the ensemble.

At the end of the evening, after he was wheeled out to a standing ovation, and most of the other musicians had left the stage, Mr. Woods’ sax remained there on a stand, perhaps similar to a wrestler leaving his shoes in the ring after his last bout.

If he’s true to his word, no one will ever again hear that horn.

Subject: RIP Guillermo Rubalcaba

The Pinar del Río-born Cuban pianist and bandleader Guillermo Rubalcaba (the father of Gonzalo Rubalcaba) passed away last night at the age of 88.

At the time of his passing, he had a new album, Como en el Ayer, coming out, with a high-profile concert featuring special guests scheduled for September 13.

Note that the second article below, by Pedro de la Hoz, which is not an obituary, was published only two days ago.

ANYTHING PHONOGRAPHIC by Steve Ramm

http://www.jazzpromoservices.com/

Thanks to Steve Ramm for his nice mention of our annual Jazz Record Bash (http://jazzbash.net/) .

In June I made a trip to northern New Jersey to attend the Annual Jazz Record Collectors’ Bash ( in its 41st year). While there were plenty of “jazz” records for sale by long time vendors, there’s even more reason to attend for both the schmoozing among collectors and the three “jazz film” shows. Yes, some are of early “jazz stars” but it’s not exclusive. Friday nights are Dave Weiner’s films, Saturday afternoon Will Friedwald takes over and Saturday night are rare Vitaphone shorts hosted by Ron Hutchinson. SIX hours of films over two days! And yes, lots of 78s to look through. The next one will be in June 24-26 2016. Sign up at www.jazzbash.net for email updates.

Nancy Harms Celebrates Duke Ellington – The New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/09/arts/music/nancy-harms-celebrates-duke-ellington.html?emc=edit_tnt_20150908

By STEPHEN HOLDEN (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/stephen_holden/index.html) SEPT. 8, 2015

** Nancy Harms Celebrates Duke Ellington
————————————————————

“A royal-blue night sky and twinkling stars: the perfect moment.” With those words, the complicated jazz singer Nancy Harms introduced her rendition of “Prelude to a Kiss” on Sunday evening at the Metropolitan Room, where she sang a program of Duke Ellington-related songs titled “Ellington at Night.”

Ms. Harms (http://www.nancyharms.com/) , who grew up in Minnesota and relocated to New York five years ago, is only tangentially related to the jazz vocal tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. She has a small, vibratoless voice that sounds almost childlike until she suddenly lets her power loose on key phrases that display a reserve of swinging authority and a defiant attitude.

Her versions of “Mood Indigo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guUjYgDiLb0) ,” “Prelude to a Kiss,” “Lush Life” and “Lost in Meditation” were among the slowest I’ve heard. Instead of coming to clearly defined endings, they trailed off and faded out, the final syllables half-mumbled. Jeremy Siskind’s loose-jointed arrangements for her band — Chris Ziemba on piano, Danton Boller on bass and Willie Jones III — helped sustain the impression that, to some degree, her renditions were stream-of-consciousness reflections by a singer reining in emotions until they exploded from within. During “Lush Life,” the phrase “smile in spite of it” was delivered with a cutting sarcasm that interrupted a mood of glum, muted self-reflection.

“This Strange Feeling,” with lyrics by Billy Strayhorn that describe an ominous, psychedelic disorientation, rode on a merry-go-round piano motif that enhanced its eerie science-fiction atmosphere.

Ms. Harms’s show wasn’t all impressionistic dreaminess. A tough, demanding swinger emerged in up-tempo numbers like “Long, Strong, and Consecutive” and “Just Squeeze Me,” which she delivered as assertive instructional songs on sexual etiquette. Behind her girlish mannerisms, Ms. Harms revealed the determination of a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants and refuses to worship at the altars of her jazz forerunners. The final impression left by Ms. Harms was of a complicated enigmatic woman of mystery forging her own path.

Nancy Harms Celebrates Duke Ellington – The New York Times

** 10 Indiana jazz icons everyone should know
————————————————————

The musical legacy of Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson factored significantly in the founding of Indy Jazz Fest in 1999.

Guitarist Montgomery, trumpet player Hubbard and trombone player Johnson rose from mid-20th century nightclubs along Indiana Avenue to become international bebop stars. For the 17th edition of Indy Jazz Fest, trumpet player Pharez Whitted supplies a strong link to hometown greatness.

Performing Sept. 13 at Indiana Landmarks Center, Whitted grew up in Indianapolis — the son of late Hampton Sisters performer Virtue Hampton Whitted and the nephew of two-time Grammy-winning trombone player Slide Hampton. Whitted has played with Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Ramsey Lewis and John Mellencamp, and he presently serves as director of jazz studies at Chicago State University.

Saxophone player Rob Dixon, the face of contemporary jazz in Indianapolis, will play multiple showcases during the festival. Dixon is artistic director of Indy Jazz Fest. Festival director and Jazz Kitchen owner David Allee is the son of Steve Allee, the long-running Indianapolis pianist who last month joined the jazz studies faculty at the University of Cincinnati.

Before the launch of this year’s Indy Jazz Fest, a multi-venue event that runs Sept. 10-19, check out this list — a roster that’s far from comprehensive — of 10 Indianapolis jazz icons (featuring eight graduates of Crispus Attucks High School):

1. Wes Montgomery
Wes Montgomery (1923-1968).

John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery (1923-1968) transformed jazz guitar after World War II, playing a fingerpicking style initially embraced by the genre’s purists and later by the masses. In annual DownBeat magazine polls, Montgomery was selected as top guitarist five times in the 1960s by critics and four times by readers. The two-time Grammy winner doubled melodies via simultaneous “octave” notes, a warm sound heard on chart-topping albums “California Dreaming,” “A Day in the Life,” “Down Here on the Ground” and “Road Song.”

2. Freddie Hubbard
Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008). Buy Photo

Arsenal Tech High School graduate Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008) recorded 57 albums, including notable projects for Blue Note Records (such as “Ready for Freddie” and “Hub-Tones” in the early 1960s) and CTI Records (such as “Red Clay” and “First Light” in the early 1970s). “First Light’s” title track earned Hubbard a Grammy Award in 1972, and he was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2006. In the realm of pop music, Billy Joel enlisted Hubbard to play trumpet on his “52nd Street” album (1978), while Elton John featured Hubbard on his “Reg Strikes Back” album (1988).

3. J.J. Johnson
J.J. Johnson (1924-2001).

James Louis Johnson (1924-2001) made the trombone a high-profile instrument in bebop jazz, giving it stature in context with Dizzy Gillespie’s trumpet and Charlie Parker’s saxophone. Johnson’s career highlights include popular collaborative albums made with Danish trombonist Kai Winding, playing on sessions that became Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool” album and being honored as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 1996. Johnson co-wrote the theme for 1973 film “Across 110th Street” with R&B vocalist Bobby Womack — later used to memorable effect in Quentin Tarantino film “Jackie Brown.”

4. Slide Hampton

Locksley “Slide” Hampton, 83, played trombone in the bands of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton (no relation) and trumpet player Maynard Ferguson in the 1950s. The left-handed player later joined ensembles led by Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach. As a bandleader, he formed the Slide Hampton Octet in 1962 and the World of Trombones in 1979. Hampton, honored as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2005, won Grammy Awards for instrumental arrangements in 1997 and 2004.

5. David Baker

David Baker, 83, learned to play trombone under J.J. Johnson’s guidance. In turn, Baker mentored Freddie Hubbard (“Dave Baker was kind of responsible for me getting into this music,” Hubbard told The Star in 1999. “He taught me how to read jazz when I was about 17.”). Following a car accident, Baker took up the cello, and he’s now director of jazz studies at Indiana University. Among Baker’s honors are becoming an NEA Jazz Master in 2000, an Indiana Living Legend in 2001, a Pulitzer Prize nominee in 1973 and a Grammy nominee in 1977.

6. Larry Ridley
Larry Ridley.

Shortridge High School graduate Larry Ridley, 78, played upright bass in bands led by Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. As a teenager, Ridley was a member of Indiana Avenue’s “Jazz Contemporaries” group featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and James Spaulding on saxophone. As an educator, Ridley taught at Rutgers University from 1971 to 1999. In recent years, he’s lectured at Manhattan School of Music and at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

7. James Spaulding

Saxophone and flute player James Spaulding, 78, played in Sun Ra’s avant-garde Arkestra in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 2004, Spaulding told AllAboutJazz.com about bringing the Arkestra to an Indianapolis YMCA. “The place was packed,” Spaulding said. “They were ready for it and they’re still ready for it.” Later in the 1960s, Spaulding contributed to studio recordings by pianist Horace Silver and saxophone player Joe Henderson.

8. Jimmy Coe

Saxophone player Jimmy Coe (1921-2004) worked with and eventually replaced Charlie Parker in Jay McShann’s early-1940s big band. One of the most durable symbols of the Indiana Avenue jazz scene, Coe was known as an adept arranger for the big band he led under his own name. In 2004, the International Association for Jazz Education presented a tribute to Coe at its annual convention in New York City.

9. Leroy Vinnegar
Leroy Vinnegar (1928-1999).

Leroy Vinnegar (1928-1999) was known as “The Walker” because of his signature bass lines that rose and fell. After moving to Los Angeles, he recorded 1957 album “Leroy Walks” and 1963’s “Leroy Walks Again.” Vinnegar’s West Coast adventures included his appearance on “Spanish Caravan,” augmenting Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore on the Doors’ album “Waiting for the Sun.” Vinnegar also played on “Compared to What,” a million-selling 1969 single for Les McCann and Eddie Harris.

10. Pookie Johnson

Saxophone and flute player Alonzo “Pookie” Johnson (1927-2005) played on Wes Montgomery’s original 1957 recording of “Bock to Bock,” a session that came two years after Johnson played six nights a week with Montgomery at the Turf Bar, 16th Street and Lafayette Road. Before his Turf Bar days, Johnson toured the United States with bands led by trumpet player King Kolax, drummer Eddie Byrd and piano player Sax Kari. Later in life, Johnson worked for the U.S. Postal Service and played music on various Indianapolis stages.

Jon Batiste Will Lead ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ Band in a Style He Sees Fit – The New York Times

There comes a point in almost any scheduled performance by Jon Batiste (http://jonbatiste.com/) when he pops up from the piano and strides into the crowd, tootling his melodica, a toylike wind instrument, with bandmates in tow. It’s a trademark shtick that happens to carry a whiff of the authentic, given Mr. Batiste’s lifelong familiarity with New Orleans second-line parades. Naturally, it was one of the factors that led to his role as bandleader on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert/) ,” which makes its debut on CBS on Tuesday.

Mr. Batiste, 28, has a lanky frame, a dandyish flair and a breezy disregard for genre pieties. It’s easy to picture him acclimating fast to a late-night talk show, even if the stubborn constraints of the format seem at odds with his brand of free-range spontaneity. The “love riot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcGRNtBRbw0) ” — his favored term for a flash-mob-style street jam, which he facilitates through social media — is only the most literal manifestation of his drive to connect viscerally with an audience, winning over many startled listeners on the move, and at close range.

This summer he and his band, Stay Human, played the Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival, on consecutive weekends at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island. Each of their afternoon sets ended, inevitably, with a pied-piper ramble (https://youtu.be/okf2B5CVc_c) into the throng. Both sets included Mr. Batiste’s jubilant take on “If You’re Happy and You Know It” — ammunition for any killjoys inclined to distrust the earnest, infantilizing aspects of his style.

But Mr. Batiste also tailored his message and band lineup for the two festival constituencies, demonstrating a sharp attunement to context that will be crucial in his new gig. “There’s a reinvention of the role happening in many of the late-night shows right now,” he said after his jazz festival set, referring to a wave of turnover that has made bandleaders out of the comedians Fred Armisen (“Late Night With Seth Meyers”) and Reggie Watts (“The Late Late Show With James Corden”), and a household name out of the Roots, his direct competition on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.

Mr. Batiste, sitting on a couch in Fort Adams with his principal bandmates, the alto saxophonist Eddie Barbash and the drummer Joe Saylor, continued: “What that means is, there’s an opportunity for innovation. So if there’s anything that I would draw from the situation, it’s that your imagination is your best friend right now. Be imaginative.”

That’s a natural takeaway for Mr. Batiste, who comes from a noted musical family in Kenner, La., a New Orleans suburb. He was 8 when he played his first gigs, as a percussionist, with the Batiste Brothers Band (http://batistebrothersband.com/) . After switching to piano, he was mentored by a distant cousin, the clarinetist Alvin Batiste. He moved to New York to attend Juilliard, and was soon turning up on concert stages with the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, which is how I first encountered him, about a decade ago.

Mr. Marsalis is, famously, another scion of a musical family in Kenner; his father, the pianist Ellis Marsalis, was another of Mr. Batiste’s teachers in New Orleans. Mr. Batiste shares the Marsalis family trait of jazz evangelism: He’s an artistic director at large at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, for which he’ll play a fall benefit on Oct. 28 (http://jazzmuseuminharlem.org/fallbenefitconcertfeaturingjonbatiste/) at the Alhambra Ballroom. Still, Mr. Batiste clarified, “I’m not out to be an ambassador for an art form, because ultimately I feel like your playing does that.” His stated cause is “social music,” a phrase meant to encompass jazz and much else besides, and the title of his most recent album, released on Razor & Tie in 2013.

It’s instructive to compare Mr. Batiste to another proud product of Kenner — the saxophonist Branford Marsalis, Wynton’s older brother, who served as the first bandleader on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. He lasted just three years in that role, never shaking the impression that his rapport with Mr. Leno felt grudging and strained.

Mr. Batiste has a leg up in that regard: He fell into brisk comic rhythm with Mr. Colbert last summer, during an interview on “The Colbert Report.” (http://www.cc.com/video-clips/oeurov/the-colbert-report-jon-batiste-and-stay-human) The exchange, which pivoted on the subject of improvisation, left a strong impression.

“As soon as that interview was over,” Mr. Colbert said recently on “The Late Show Podcast,” “I went, ‘Damn, I think that’s a guy I could actually spend a few years onstage with.’ ” (It didn’t hurt that Mr. Batiste also staged a love riot, leading Mr. Colbert and his audience outside the studio.)

One recent hallmark of the late-night landscape is the quirky bit designed to go viral; the Roots, a hip-hop group known for high-minded sociopolitical fury, have made this such a core feature (https://youtu.be/as-SALpccd8) of Mr. Fallon’s show that it’s easy to forget how shrewdly it plays against type. Questlove, the drummer and self-declared music geek who leads the Roots, manages to balance frivolity and substance, a strategy even more ideally suited to Mr. Batiste.

By way of example: In 2011, as he was finishing his master’s degree in jazz studies at Juilliard, Mr. Batiste self-released a live EP, “My N.Y.,” recorded entirely on moving subway cars. It opens with a parade-strut version of “You Are My Sunshine” that quickly morphs into “Just Dance,” by Lady Gaga.

Questlove enthusiastically endorsed Mr. Batiste in GQ in 2013 (http://www.gq.com/story/questlove-a-trak-solange-ezra-koenig-discussion) , before the “Late Show” appointment: “Google him now, see his show, thank me later.” So any rivalry between the Roots and Stay Human will probably be friendly, echoing the dynamic between Mr. Fallon and Mr. Colbert. (Still, competition should raise the stakes all around.)

Besides, there’s a bigger yardstick for Mr. Batiste and Mr. Colbert: Paul Shaffer’s landmark run as bandleader and sidekick to David Letterman, on two groundbreaking late-night shows. That partnership always crackled, and the mutual regard was clear.

“Jon has it with Stephen,” Mr. Shaffer said last week, judging by the available evidence. “So we don’t have that to worry about.” One sign of continuity between “Late Show” eras is that Mr. Batiste has met Mr. Shaffer for lunch, seeking insights; another is that Dan Fetter, Mr. Shaffer’s former logistical consigliere, has been retained as house band producer for the new show.

Still, the sense of transition is obvious. “They’re starting a brand-new thing; let’s see what they do,” Mr. Shaffer said. “Jon is a great musician, and I hope I’m walking by the theater at 5:30, because I have a sneaking suspicion they’re going to be in the street a little bit.”

Sept. 7, 2015 4:22 p.m. ET

Batman battles the Joker in the middle of an amusement park to prevent a bomb on top of a Ferris wheel from nuking Gotham. To stop an interplanetary war, Capt. James T. Kirk must confront the ghosts and demons—in the form of beautiful women—from his own past. Deadpool wails away on bad guys (and, rather indiscriminately, a few good ones as well), mumbles semi-coherently to the audience, and obsesses over tacos.

All these may sound like plot lines from the latest billion-dollar Hollywood blockbuster. But, in actuality, these are all from what are known as “fan films”—independently produced movies using familiar characters from iconic science-fiction and superhero franchises.

To most of us who started reading comic books during the “Silver” age (the 1960s), the term “fan film” means cranking up the Super 8 camera and shooting your little brother parading around the driveway in blue long johns and a towel around his neck. In the digital era, however, fan films have grown to the point where the best of them are not only incredibly sophisticated, often employing professional talent, but worthy of competing with the official product. For a microscopic fraction of what the major studios spend, many of them are better than such epic disasters as “Green Lantern” (2011) and this summer’s mega-bomb “Fantastic Four.”

There’s only one rule governing so-called fan films: They’re not allowed to make a profit. (Although some of the production people and actors are occasionally paid at least a token fee.) These productions begin and end their lives on the Internet. The budgets are generally raised through a combination of online crowdfunding (e.g., Kickstarter), filmmakers and actors who put their money where their mouths are, and wealthy friends. And the web is where the movies are allowed to be shown, on YouTube and Vimeo, for free.

Fan films are an outgrowth of fan fiction, a phenomenon that reached an early peak with the original “Star Trek” series of 1966-69. Nearly everyone who followed the show had some ideas for further adventures for the crew of the USS Enterprise following the show’s abrupt cancellation—even as the discourse among comic-book fans ran along the lines of “could the Hulk beat Wonder Woman in a fair fight?”

“Star Trek,” particularly the original series, has always been the galactic epicenter of fan fiction and films. The flagship of the fan film fleet is easily “Star Trek Continues,” the brainchild of Vic Mignogna, who has been a dominant figure in producing, writing and occasionally directing the series (the fifth episode drops, as they say, at the end of this month), and who also stars as Captain Kirk.

The web series comes frighteningly close to replicating the original series, in the sets, make-up and hairstyles, costumes and music. (Andy Farber, a frequent member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, composed the latest two episodes, scoring for a 40-piece orchestra.) The art direction precisely captures the Day-Glo visuals of early color TV. Most remarkable is Mr. Mignogna; no actor playing, for instance, James Bond has imitated Sean Connery outright, but Mr. Mignogna comes so scarily close to the dynamic, staccato energy of William Shatner that we keep forgetting we’re looking at another actor. The show has been primarily funded through two “Kirkstarter” campaigns that have raised a total of $250,000 for the five 50-minute episodes produced so far. Compare that with the $190,000 budget (roughly $1.4 million in today’s dollars) for a single episode in 1966, or the $1.7 million that Paramount spent on episodes of the most recent Trek show, “Enterprise,” a dozen years
ago.

The other franchise that has most caught the imagination of fan-film producers is the extended Batman family; there are entries on Nightwing (the grown-up incarnation of Robin), Batgirl and even the Joker. The most impressive entry so far is “City of Scars,” a $27,000, 30-minute film that could easily be a template for a low-budget Batman TV series, containing highly believable fights, chases and action sequences, as well as copious philosophizing and moralizing (”Gotham City is sick of Batman’s conscience,” Officer Montoya snarls, “and so am I!”). There’s also an irresistibly hateful incarnation of the Joker who talks like a psychotic kiddie-show host. Other Dark Knight/Caped Crusader spinoffs (”Batgirl: Spoiled,” “Batman: Death Wish”) seem like ambitious outgrowths of what, in Comic Con parlance, is referred to as “cosplay.” (The term describes fans who enjoy playing dress-up on a highly elaborate level, as represented by the many 20-something women decked out as the
Catwoman or Harley Quinn.)

There are also numerous fan films built around the Marvel character Deadpool, a mumbling mutant and the most meta of super-antiheroes, in a state of constant dialogue with his creators, much like Daffy Duck in “Duck Amuck,” never quite sure who he’s battling or why. When Marvel releases the first official Deadpool feature next year, it remains to be seen if a big-budget studio production can compete with such earnestly entertaining amateur efforts as “Deadpool: A Typical Tuesday.”

Also, 2016 will see two major Star Trek releases, Paramount’s official “Star Trek Beyond” and the eagerly anticipated “Axanar,” a highly ambitious fan feature (budgeted at half a million dollars) that has the potential to create an entirely new Trek sub-franchise.

The best of these fan films prove that it’s possible to be highly original even when working with well-known characters. They are, in fact, going where many have gone before, but no less boldly.

Mr. Friedwald writes about music and popular culture for the Journal.

A fixture on local public radio who shared his love of jazz with generations was killed Sunday night driving home to Greenville after his weekly broadcast.

Tom “The Jazzman” Mallison of Williamsburg Drive was killed about 11:30 p.m. on N.C. 43 near Vanceboro, according to Charles Wethington, president and general manager of WTEB in New Bern.

Mallison, 75, was returning from his weekly broadcast of “An Evening with Tom the Jazzman” when the wreck occurred, Wethington said. He hosted the five-hour show on Sundays since the station’s beginnings in 1984

George Olsen, host of the evening All Things Considered news broadcast, broke the news to listeners. Olsen, who also hosts a five-hour musical broadcast called The Sound, had worked with Mallison since 1987.

“The suddenness of his passing has stunned all of us at Public Radio East,” Olsen said. “If there is solace, it is in the fact that shortly before his death he was doing what he loved to do: sharing the music that was his passion his whole life with an audience wanting to hear more. Music is a great joy to so many people. Tom shared his joy with radio audiences for well over 30 years. Certainly it was a life well-lived.”

The State Highway Patrol reported that Mallison was driving a 2002 Volvo north on the highway near Clark Road just north of Vanceboro. A 2001 Dodge pick-up drifted into his lane, and the vehicles collided head-on.

Mallison died at the scene and the driver of the pickup was flown to Vidant Medical Center, Trooper S.M. Casner said. The man was badly injured and was not carrying any identification, Casner said.

Officials had not been able to positively identify the man Monday night, Casner said. What caused him to enter Mallison’s lane also remains under investigation.

Mallison was a lifelong Greenville resident. He graduated from J.H. Rose High School and East Carolina University and worked at E.I. Dupont in Kinston. He was an ardent supporter of the university.

Before his show with WTEB, he broadcast with WOOW AM in Greenville and WITN FM. During An Evening with Tom the Jazzman, he interspersed the music with wit and wisdom garnered from more than 40 years in broadcasting, according to an ECU News Services story published in 2009 when Mallison donated his albums to Joyner Library.

The collection includes thousands of LP jazz recordings that he accumulated since the age of 12, the article said.

It spans wide variety of jazz sub-genres from ragtime and Dixieland to fusion.

Known as the “TomtheJazzman Collection,” it offers an “appreciation for the art that is jazz music,” Larry Boyer, dean of Academic Library and Learning Resources, said in 2009.

A 1966 ECU graduate, Mallison also served a number of university support organizations, including as Chair of the Robert Wright Student Government President’s Society. The East Carolina Alumni Association recognized his dedication to the university with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1998.

WTEB reported that Mallison’s efforts to promote jazz have won him recognition from the nationally distributed Jazz Week as well as being a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Deceased Jazz DJ’s Enormous Record Collection to be Sold at Euclid Records on Saturday | Music Blog | St. Louis News and Events | Riverfront Times

* The “Red Vest Sale” will feature thousands of classic jazz records.

Dave Brubeck. Dexter Gordon. Dizzy Gillespie. Grant Green. If you don’t know who any of these musicians are, your score at trivia during the lightning round might take a serious hit.

For sixteen years, radio DJ and jazz aficionado Leo Chears hosted a show on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s 88.7 (WSIE-FM), known as the Jazz Station, during the overnight hours between midnight and 5 a.m. If you lived in St. Louis and tuned in to the lower half of the dial, chances are Leo’s husky, baritone register was on your speakers, professing the greatness of the next record he was set to spin.
http://media1.fdncms.com/riverfronttimes/imager/u/original/3004003/rsz_img_8291.jpg
* Chears was so popular in his time he was even featured in ads for Budweiser.

Known far and wide as “the man in the red vest,” Chears collected nearly 30,000 albums during the course of his 40-year broadcasting career, many of which he used to help supplement the station’s existing collection. By the time he passed away in 2006, he was a widely-respected authority on the genre, having interviewed Ray Charles, Billy Eckstine, Clark Terry and many more. He was all jazz, all the time.

For years, the Chears estate held on to a majority of his vinyl collection, donating a large portion to the SIUE Lovejoy Library. But now Euclid Records owner Joe Schwab has acquired the remainder, and plans to get it back into the hands of music fans this Saturday. In an event dubbed “The Red Vest Sale, (https://www.facebook.com/events/114936415525074/) ” thousands of classic jazz, swing, soul and blues LPs will be priced to move — $2 apiece or three for $5.

“It’s really just to give everybody the chance, who is interested in learning about jazz or building up their jazz collections, to do it on the cheap,” Schwab says. A longtime fan of the music with a self-described “good ear,” Schwab hates to see the collection go to waste. He hopes the sale of Chears’ record collection will be a siren call to those who are interested in more of a deep-dive of the American genre.

“We’ve been seeing a slow decline in jazz sales overall, but I think it’s just because more young people aren’t getting into it,” he says.

Though you won’t find any original Blue Note pressings, the entire collection is still a sight to behold — nearly 7,000 records collected by one of St. Louis’s most beloved music historians, ready to be picked over by jazz and vinyl enthusiasts. Go and find a stackful of wax that belonged to the man in the red vest and spin it till dawn, then sign off the way he used to at the end of every show: with a “Good night and good morning.”

The Red Vest Sale begins Saturday, September 5th at 10 a.m. Euclid Records is located at 19 North Gore Avenue in Webster Groves.

** Deceased Jazz DJ’s Enormous Record Collection to be Sold at Euclid Records on Saturday
————————————————————

http://media1.fdncms.com/riverfronttimes/imager/u/original/3004001/rsz_img_8289.jpg
* Kevin Korinek

Alberta Wright, Soul-Food Pioneer, Dies at 84 – The New York Times

Alberta Wright, the owner of Jezebel, which brought soul food with panache to Manhattan’s theater district and helped make sophisticated variations of Southern dishes a culinary trend, died on Friday in the Bronx. She was 84.

The cause was heart failure, her son Ronald said.

Jezebel, which opened in 1983 on Ninth Avenue and 45th Street, was a precursor of today’s upscale soul-food restaurants, like Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in Harlem.

Mr. Samuelsson called Ms. Wright a “trailblazer” and an “inspiration” in a telephone interview on Friday.

“When you ate with Alberta, you were her friend,” he said, adding: “You come into her living room and she’ll take care of you. She’ll remember what you had, where you like to sit. It’s the core of what a restaurateur should be.”

Jezebel’s menu drew on Ms. Wright’s experience growing up in South Carolina, north of Charleston; the décor harked back to her years selling vintage clothing from her successful boutique, also named Jezebel, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

“Palms and assorted foliage sway under the breeze of big room fans; lacy, multicolored shawls hang from ceiling pipes; eccentric old lamps flicker in every corner; antique furniture mixes with white wicker chairs and porch swings suspended from the ceiling,” Bryan Miller wrote (http://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/28/arts/restaurants-475187.html) in a review in The New York Times in 1987. “Add to this potpourri Oriental rugs, vintage posters, lace-covered tables and crystal chandeliers and you have one of the most intriguing settings in New York.”

Jezebel offered traditional dishes like garlic shrimp, she-crab soup and three varieties of chicken — fried, honey-fried and with waffles. A 1992 review (http://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/09/arts/restaurants-359292.html) in The Times, also by Mr. Miller, described Jezebel’s offerings as “the best soul food south of 110th Street (maybe above, too).”

Ms. Wright tried opening a branch of her restaurant in Paris and worked with investors like Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Charles Oakley, Julius Erving and her son Michael Wright, the stage and film actor, to open another on the Upper West Side, but both efforts fizzled. Ms. Wright closed Jezebel in 2007. Piece of Chicken, a dollar-an-item takeout business that she ran from Jezebel’s kitchen window, stayed open for a while longer.

Alberta Wright was born on June 13, 1931, in Pineville, S.C. Her parents, Annie and Edmond Wright, were sharecroppers. She learned to cook by watching her mother.

“My mother worked as a domestic for wealthy white folks,” Ms. Wright said. “I’d go through the back to the kitchen — we couldn’t go through the front — to where my mother was working, and she’d slip me a muffin.”

Ms. Wright gave birth to twins, Ronald and Donald, as a teenager and moved to New York. The twins stayed behind with different families, and after Ms. Wright had saved up enough money working as a waitress, she brought them to New York.

She worked at an aircraft plant, a camera company and a dress shop and became deeply involved in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. She told The Times that she once served chili to Malcolm X and was a regular at West African diplomatic parties, where she learned of new foods and spices that she later used in her kitchen.

In addition to her sons Ronald, Donald and Michael, Ms. Wright is survived by a sister, Gladys Jenkins; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The centennial celebration for Frank Sinatra (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/frank_sinatra/index.html?inline=nyt-per) looks as if it will be quite the soiree.

Sinatra, a Hoboken, N.J., native who died in 1998, is being honored at the Hoboken Historical Museum with an exhibition called “Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Voice and the Fans (https://www.hobokenmuseum.org/exhibitions/main-gallery/current-exhibition) .” Visitors can attend a Sunday with Sinatra performance series on Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6, and the museum is also co-hosting a concert and birthday party on Dec. 12 at Stevens Institute of Technology, where Sinatra received an honorary doctorate 30 years ago (http://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/23/nyregion/our-towns-frank-sinatra-doctor-of-engineering.html) . Also on Dec. 12, which would have been the singer’s 100th birthday, Sinatra’s son, Frank Jr., will perform a tribute concert at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In Palm Springs, Calif., where Sinatra had a home for many years, the Riviera Resort & Spa (http://www.psriviera.com/) will celebrate him with a Weekend at Sinatra’s (http://www.psriviera.com/sinatra.aspx) series of events, including “A Rat Pack Halloween (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/h/halloween/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) Party” at the Starlite Lounge on Oct. 31.

The Fontainebleau Miami Beach (http://www.fontainebleau.com/) will cap off its 100-day countdown to Sinatra’s birthday with a Dec. 12 concert. Starting Sept. 2, the Fontainebleau, where Sinatra filmed “A Hole in the Head,” “Tony Rome” and “Lady in Cement,” will toast the entertainer each night in the Bleau Bar, offer a two-night, Sinatra-themed package for $1,915, and display 35 Sinatra images taken by Terry O’Neill.

On Sept. 24 at the Sinatra restaurant at Wynn Las Vegas (http://www.wynnlasvegas.com/) resort, the chef Theo Schoenegger will be joined by two of Sinatra’s granddaughters, A. J. Lambert and Amanda Erlinger, for a demonstration on how to prepare some of Sinatra’s favorite meals. Tickets are $85 per person.

Starting Sept. 10, a collection of Sinatra photos on loan from the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles will be at the Hoboken Public Library. (http://hoboken.bccls.org/) Additionally, a photographic exhibition from the museum called “Sinatra 100” (http://www.grammymuseum.org/on-display/traveling-exhibits/sinatra-100) is being shown at the Museum of Monterey in California through Sept. 27.

Curated by the Grammy Museum, “Sinatra: An American Icon,” will be on display (http://www.grammymuseum.org/on-display/special-exhibits/sinatra) in Los Angeles from Oct. 21 through Grammy night on Feb. 15.
