PABLO ZIEGLER

Pablo Ziegler releases an album of brand new arrangements of his nuevo tango pieces, as well as some new compositions and works by Astor Piazzolla, Alejandro Dolina, and Juan Carlos Cobián

FRESH OFF 2018 GRAMMY WIN, PABLO ZIEGLER RELEASES HIS FIRST SOLO PIANO ALBUM FOR STEINWAY & SONS

“He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural…Just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard.”
 The Los Angeles Times

“A stellar, sitting down piano recital in which he recrafts a bunch of his own classics, and of course Piazzolla’s, this is as good as it gets and should be heard by all no matter how they feel about tango, instrumental and other musical types that might not be on their normal radar.”
MidWest Record

Pablo Ziegler, 2018 Grammy Award winner for Best Latin Jazz Album, writes music imbued with Buenos Aires soul. Following up on 2016’s Tango Nuevo with Christopher O’Riley, Pablo Ziegler Solo presents the composer and pianist on his own terms with new arrangements of his nuevo tango works, along with pieces by Juan Carlos Cobián, Alejandro Dolina, and Ziegler’s mentor, Astor Piazzolla.

While Ziegler is accustomed to playing his music with orchestra or small ensemble, this new solo program is a natural extension of his love and affinity for his instrument. He remarks, “The piano is a way to have a conversation for me; I express my feelings through piano rather than words. I always hear music in my mind, and the piano has been always accompanied my journey.” Compositions recorded for the first time on Pablo Ziegler Solo include “Alguien sin Nombre,” a dream of an encounter with an unknown true love; and “Nana para un Niño Dormido,” inspired by Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck.

In choosing works by other composers for the project, Ziegler hoped to emphasize the varying sides of his identity, from classical to jazz to nuevo tango. Two works by Piazzolla – “Oblivion” and “Milonga del Ángel” – represent the time in Ziegler’s life when he and Piazzolla were performing together. Ziegler met Alejandro Dolina in the 1980s, and arranged and re-harmonized his piece “El Vals del Duende,” the album’s penultimate track. Juan Carlos Cobián graduated from the same conservatory as Ziegler and is considered the Chopin of Tango music; his “Nostalgias” closes the album.“

Releasing this solo piano album is a new chapter of my life as a musician,” says Ziegler. “There is always a first time for everything. This album happened to be one of them.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

For decades, Buenos Aires-born, Grammy-winning pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler has been one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango, American jazz, and European art music. After performing in tango grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla’s legendary quintet for over a decade, and appearing on iconic Piazzolla recordings including Tango: Zero Hour, La Camorra and Central Park Concert, Ziegler has led his own groups for over 20 years, refining and reimagining the bounds of the modern tango tradition.

Ziegler has performed at major venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Muziekgebouw, Verbier Festival, Ravinia Festival, SFJAZZ, Montreal Jazz Festival, the Ottawa International Jazz Fest, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Birdland, Blue Note and many others.
In 2016, for the Steinway & Sons label, Ziegler teamed up with pianist Christopher O’Riley for Tango Nuevo, a love letter to the traditions and culture of Argentina, particularly to the city of Buenos Aires.

MARTY ELKINS  FAT DADDY was selected TOP TEN CDs of 2018 in Cadence Magazine

“While her previous CDs are excellent, Fat Daddy is Marty Elkins’ definitive recording so far and is highly recommended to fans of first-class swing singers.”
Scott Yanow, The Syncopated Times – August 1, 2018

“Surely the acid test for any record is whether you play it just once, just twice, or have to hear it again and again: it’s in your head always. Fat Daddy is an always record, and Marty Elkins is an always singer….Her lush voice caresses the lyrics of this imaginative and compelling collection of standards and discoveries…. Elkins can do anything.”

“Soul Serenade- The Gloria Lynne Project” is the title of my newest CD project. Although not exactly a “tribute” album, it is more of a celebration of the music made popular by the great vocalist, Gloria Lynne. As it turns out, I have been singing some of the material

she has been known for ever since I first began to sing professionally- so many years ago! “I Wish You Love” is one of the first ballads I ever sang on a gig. “I’m Glad There Is You” is a track I recorded for my CD “On The Street Where You Live”.
While performing on a recent gig with drummer Vince Ector, I sang “I’m Glad There Is You”, and he reminded me it was one of Gloria’s signature songs.
So, I began to research more of Gloria’s work and was instantly mesmerized by her voice, style and emotion. Additionally, her choice of material was instantly appealing to me. I tendto look for songs that are “beyond the norm” of the Great American Songbook repertoire. The songs Gloria Lynne recorded during her career stand alone in their originality and uniqueness. Her performances of these particular tunes move me every time I hear them.
I wanted to step away from the piano for this project in order to collaborate with someone else’s ideas that could influence the way I might want to sing a particular song. I feel that when you accompany yourself on piano the two elements are inseparable and it was time to do a project in a different way.

I asked my dear friend Brad Cole (Music Director for Phil Collins, etc.) to take my concepts and write the arrangements and orchestrations as well as to play piano/keyboards on this project. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted to do with each of these songs. I think we’ve come up with a fresh approach to this material that Gloria Lynne’s recordings influenced me to explore and ultimately record!

Reviews

Marino is sassy, upbeat on “Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You” and is soulful as she bops along Chris Brown’s brushes on “For You.” Stately and uptown.”
– jazzweekly.com – George Harris

” A jazzy vocal album that works throughout, Marino is fully ready to take flight on her own, especially if she plans on keeping it classy. Well done.”
-Midwest Record – Chris Spector

Diane Marino brings the vocal magic on ballads like “Blue Gardenia” and “Out of This World.” “The Jazz in You” is produced as a sultry blues number and Marino steps up to the plate and hits a home run with this tune.”
-Musical Memoirs.com  – Dee Dee McNeil/Jazz Journalist

“A thoroughly enjoyable contemporary pop/jazz album from vocalist Diane Marino from “Soul Serenade: The Gloria Lynne Project” w/ some fine orchestrations and arrangements by Brad Cole.”
– notesonjazz.blogspot.com – Ralph A. Miriello

“A striking vocalist, Diane Marino chose songs that brought out the emotional depth of her register. Her inflections make lyrics stand out in the listener’s mind. She expresses human emotion through the range of her timbres and the elasticity in her vocal nuances. Revisiting songs from Gloria Lynne’s recordings prove to be a fine fit for Diane Marino.”
– Susan Franceson – Blog Critics: Marino emblazons each track with her personal touch ***** 5 Stars

Marino wisely retains her own identity whilst conveying the feel of a Gloria Lynne performance. Which, in many ways, is the best of two worlds. Sultry, with just an edge of soul and blues and a lot of jazz. A great album that’s made me aware of TWO great jazz vocalists.”
– Bebop Spoken Here – Lance Liddle

“Reverie and remembrance for the art of Gloria Lynne sing through this collection – due to the inordinately beautiful performances by Diane Marino and ensemble. ”
– 5 out of 5 stars A celebration of the spirit of Gloria Lynne – Grady Harp (Amazon)

Judi’s compositions are like her paintings… Magical!
Sheila Jordan, 2012 NEA Jazz Master

The album “Lessons Learned”, recently released on Unit Records, consists entirely of Silvano’s compositions, some of them sharp and spiky (“Dark Things”) and others full of wonder (“Round and Round”). One subtle high point is a ballad titled “Hand and Heart.”

Nate Chinen, WBGO.org/post

Once again, the jazz vocalist finds that sweet spot between art chic and hard core pro as she delivers a real personal album.  Lyrically loaded with lessons all of us should really be thinking about, this is a Zen jazz set that’s sure to resonate.

Chris Spector, MidWest Record Review

Judi Silvano’s “Lessons Learned” has moved my thoughts and memories in countless directions, her words awakening so much of a life lived.  After careful listening to her thought-provoking lyrics, all I can say is the album has now become a permanent fixture on my iPhone playlist.
Eric Alan, alljazzradio/co.za/blogs-and-reviews, So.Africa

There comes a point in anyone’s life that is a place of reflection; a review of a lifetime’s worth of choices and decisions. At that point, songs emerge, and Judi Silvano’s “Lessons Learned” (Unit Records UTR4868) is a mature musical compilation of personal observations on life and love.

“Lessons Learned” was produced by Grammy winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano, who says “This is one of the most inspired and fun recording sessions I’ve ever been a part of; it’s full of beautiful, joyous music!”  His feelings are well reflected in his adventurous arrangements of these songs, from tender and spiritual to raucous and whimsical. That gamut is also a function of Judi’s songwriting. She’s not afraid to bare her heart and sing of intimacy, and she tackles the realities of aging with hilarious candor.

The musicians on the recording are members of Silvano’s Zephyr Band, an ensemble with an unusual lineup for a jazz singer: two electric guitars.  These are wielded by Kenny Wessel and Bruce Arnold, providing orchestral settings for the songs. The band is rounded out with Ratzo B. Harris on bass, Adam Kolker on bass clarinet, soprano and tenor sax, Bob Meyer on drums and Todd Isler on percussion. Joe Lovano lends his signature sound on tenor sax to two tracks.

They continue to find new directions for Silvano’s compositions and stories.

Mike Freeman has been hailed as “masterful,”a “superb” vibes player, and “wildly talented.” Following Blue Tjade, his tribute to Cal Tjader, Venetian Blinds is a tip of the hat to Tito Puente and Bobby Hutcherson.

When Tito Puente rolled in his vibes during the early days of the Palladium, people would say, “Here comes Tito with those venetian blinds!”— referring to the strung-together bars of the instrument. Four of the tracks on this recording were written for Tito Puente: “Those Venetian Blinds,” “Mambo Kings,” “Night Crawlers,” and “Qué Tal Tío” (What’s Up Uncle). Another three go out to the late vibraphonist and Jazz Master Bobby Hutcherson: “Clutch the Hutch,” “Bobby Land,” and “House of Vibes.”

Mike Freeman ZonaVibe brings together a mix of original Latinjazz characterized by spirited soulful swing. Venetian Blinds is the latest in a line of clave-infused recordings Mike has produced over the past 18 years.

The all-new lineup for this outing features stalwarts of the New York Latin music scene: trumpeter Guido Gonzalez and conga master Roberto Quintero, along with up-and-coming players Ian Stewart on bass and Joel Mateo on drums.

Mike Freeman’s recordings have appeared on numerous radio charts (jazz, contemporary, World) and syndicated radio programs (WOR radio network, Jazz After Hours, David Sanborn, Music Choice, United Airlines), with international airplay throughout Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and Australia. His recordings have been both Grammy and Latin Grammy entries and have received outstanding reviews. Mike is also known by fans and audiences for his work and recordings with several acclaimed Latin groups including Ray Mantilla; Lucho Cueto’s all-star salsa group Black Sugar; and Son Boricua with Jose Mangual Jr. and the late Jimmy Sabater (one of the architects of Boogaloo).

High-talent masterful vibraphone jazz Mike Freeman ZonaVibe – Venetian Blinds

Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion Reviews August 10, 2018

High-talent masterful vibraphone jazz Mike Freeman ZonaVibe – VENETIAN BLINDS:  “Old soul” Latin jazz fans (like me) can’t help but remember the hip sounds of players like Tito Puente and Bobby Hutcherson… this is vibraphonist Mike’s high-talent tribute to those stalwarts… as you listen to them on his August, 2018 release, you’ll realize why I found his playing so attractive… the 4:47 “Bobby Land” has a lilting groove that will transport any “true” jazz lover straight to Nirvana… just LOVE Mike’s vibe on this tune.

Mike’s work is highly complimented by trumpeter Guido Gonzalez; conga master Roberto Quintero, along with up-and-coming players Ian Stewart on bass and Joel Mateo on drums… all you need to do is scope out the 5:15 opener, “House Of Vibes“, to become a dedicated fan of this great group of players… one thing you’ll notice right away is how “together” they are… no players “stepping” on each other & every note is full of the kind of jazz energy most groups can only aspire towards; this is one of my favorite vibe-based tunes (yet) in 2018!

If you’re looking for music you can dance to, you’re gonna’ fall in love with “Fancy Free” right away… this song definitely has the soul you’ve been seeking… it gets a slot on my iPhone player, too… perfect cruising music… Ian’s bass solo lines on this one are just stellar!

It is the longest cut on the album that won my vote for personal favorite… “What’s Up With This Moon” clocks in at 6:11, and has some wonderful trumpet from Guido, along with all the other jazz masters.

I give Mike and his fellow players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this mighty mellow jazz excursion.

“Rebecca Angel’s lyrical rearrangement of Brazilian Marcos Valle’s instrumental hit of 2005 is a wonderfully sensual interpretation. Sophisticated and charming in equal measure, Angel’s vocal and her band’s combined musicality masters the jazz, samba and pop fusions perfectly.” –Jason Balzarano 4-star review (Jazz Journal UK)

“Rebecca Angel’s voice makes the difference. With her refined charm, she gives the songs on What We Had the overwhelming splendor.” –Hans-Bernd Hulsmann

“WHAT WE HAD is a real treat, and Rebecca Angel’s voice and writing are superb evidence of an artist with a very bright future.”
Chris Gibson (Broadway World)

“Her voice often has a light, airy quality, which works to raise our spirits and make the world seems a bit better than it is.” –Michael Doherty

“Angel has a breathy, sweet voice that might be just as comfortable singing pop hits, but she’s able to bypass that observation through great taste in her material such as Hoagy Carmichael’s “Winter Moon” and a gorgeous and unique cover of “Stand By Me”… She’s done such a good job here, from the singing to the arranging to the composing and the choice of material.” –Marc Phillips (The Vinyl Anachronist)

“If you’re a true fan of youngbloods doing jazz vocal work, you’ll be just as excited as I am about Rebecca’s fresh and captivating new EP. […]Rebecca is definitely a star you’ll be hearing much more from over the coming months and years! […] The soulful performance Rebecca offers up on the classic “ Stand By Me” is (unquestionably) one of the most exciting covers of the tune I’ve ever heard.”

Best American Roots Performance
Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals

“Power-packed vocals” – Soul Tracks
“Stunningly powerful performance” – Jazz Radio France

Listen On Spotify
or stream/download HERE

shem.gif
Powerhouse NYC recording artist Valerie Ghent salutes Dave Mason with the release of her new single, Feelin Alright – fifty years after the song’s initial release by English rock band, Traffic.

An electrifying remake of the soul-blues classic written by Dave Mason and made famous by Joe Cocker, Valerie delivers a strikingly powerful performance, heralding a band of world-class musicians recorded in New York City and France. In her full, live production complete with rock solid rhythm section, sizzling horns, a blazing piano solo and gospel-soul backing vocals, Ghent brings her multi-faceted talents (vocals, piano, organ, production, engineering & arranging) shaped by 20+ years working with music luminaries Ashford & Simpson, Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Debbie Harry & Billy Preston to the forefront.

Feelin’ Alright features a new arrangement in the verses, plus stellar performances from Valerie on piano and vocals, and top musicians you have heard on countless R+B hits including Luther Vandross/Ashford & Simpson bassist Tinkr Barfield, Average White Band drummer Rocky Bryant, Blues Hall of Fame pianist Dave Keyes, world-renowned percussionist Bashiri Johnson, Roberta Flack backing vocalists Dennis Collins, Keith Fluitt and Toto’s John James. Add to the mix a blazing horn section from Paris featuring Nicolas Baudino and Marc Borlet-Hôte, Blues’Up organist Pierre Sibille, renowned French guitarist Jérôme Buigues, and Feelin’ Alright is ready to light up the world again in 2018!

“We’re thrilled to release our version of Feelin’ Alright in 2018,” Valerie says, “Feelin’ Alright is a timeless song, with a universal feeling everyone can relate to. Even though it was first released fifty years ago, to me the lyrics take on even more relevance today. Plus it’s such a fun song to play live! We had a blast putting our own NYC spin on it, while honoring the power of Joe Cocker’s version. We’ve been closing every show with Feelin’ Alright and audiences on both sides of the Atlantic love it. We salute you Dave Mason, and Joe Cocker, thank you both for bringing Feelin’ Alright into the world and giving us such a great song to sing.”

Valerie Ghent contributes her power packed vocals to a latest rendition of Mason’s classic. “Feelin’ Alright” is a fun and funky take on the decidedly downbeat topic of unrequited love. Her version features some of the classic soul/gospel elements (including those churchy backing vocals) heard in Cocker’s version. The horns on Ghent’s interpretation give the track a bit of a jazzy swing.

 Review by Raul da Gama

At last the renowned Brasilian musician Antonio Adolfo, pianist and pedagogue has followed esteemed fellow-Brasilians Moacir Santos, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal and Mario Adnet in creating music for a larger ensemble. While retaining all the foaming warmth and shuffling rhythms of (Carioca) Brasil Mr Adolfo’s music – much more fulsome with brass, winds and guitars here – cuts through the air with wonderfully sharp and silvery harmonics that weave sinuously through these ten melodies. Always, of course the music is guided onward by Mr Adolfo’s sometimes gliding, and often percussive, pianism and supported by the steady in-the-pocket drumming and percussion of Rafael Barata and Dadá Costa. And all of this is shaped by the sensuous bass lines of Jorge Helder who, together with Jessé Sadoc, a musician who Mr Adolfo has often called upon to anchor his groups – small and large.

Mr Adolfo’s music has always worked on two distinct planes. One has been the narrative – one on which he has built often fascinating stories and adventures. The other is the visual one and here Mr Adolfo has tinted the black dots with colours from a very large palette. The scope of these has been generously enlarged on Encontros. As a result this music now has the effect of a kind of epic depiction of Mr Adolfo’s beloved Brasilian landscape and taken together this music acts as a kind of soundtrack to a breathtaking adventure. And it is enormously beckoning from the agitated, jazzy shuffle of “Partido Samba-Funk” to another rippling jazzy rendition of Miles Davis’ “Milestones” where the musicians of Orquestra Atlântica mark a dramatic dynamic contrast between the spiky legato arpeggio accompaniment and the characteristically laconic melodic top line.

Mr Adolfo returns to the heart of Brasil with a deep-dive into the traditional “Capoeira Yá” and a dark, rumbling “Africa Bahia Brasil” which conjures the spirit not only of Moacir Santos, but also the great Dorival Caymmi. All the while Mr Adolfo employs tones and colours of the largest palette than one has ever been accustomed to hearing his music played. This also gives the arrangers the scope to introduce soloists who have been accorded time to improvise on themes and melodies. Each solo is a masterful essay and is played with intensity and a winning sweetness of tone and manner. The result is a programme that works exceedingly well for Mr Adolfo. Special mention need be mentioned of the arrangements and orchestrations by Marcelo Martins and Jessé Sadoc for without their extraordinary work this might have been a wholly different album of songs. As it is with this and the other musicians who play Mr Adolfo’s wonderful music this will be an album to remember for a long time to come.

If you’ve been in the jazz biz for any length of time, you’ll know the name Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, a mad-skills hornmeister with a decidedly extensive palette of colors and textures.

Contemporary Jazz lovers will have heard many of his ubiquitous nine Billboard hits from a dozen albums
and know of his Album of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year Awards.

If you are a Classic Jazz lover, you would know Gabriel from his two mainstream JazzWeek charting albums,  including Come Out Swingin’, which included the debut of a young Michael Bublé, actually singing great jazz.

Gabriel performed his MidCentury Modern Vol. 1 CD release shows during the New Orleans Jazz Festival, at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, so you know he can do that stuff too (we are talking funky, and swinging).

Refusing to be pigeonholed, Gabriel spreads his wings with MidCentury Modern Vol. 1, an engaging mainstream project,

that showcases his commanding horn, and embraces all the highlights of the jazz experience without pandering or artifice.

It seems to be an erudite and pleasing mix to the Grammy folks, too, so read the reviews ….. that’s why you need to have a listen!

Good jazz is good jazz, and this album reaches jazz lovers of all stripes without dumbing-down the content or overwhelming any listener.

“This is Milne at his most Ellingtonian, establishing moods and beginning various patterns that the band will soon take over. It is a mature, careful performance—one certainly easy to miss. Every time you pay attention to the piano parts, they are interesting, vital, subtle.”

Pop Matters
An oft-repeated piece of musical lore states that the great composer/arranger Duke Ellington wrote music specifically for the individuals in his orchestra. His knowledge of their musical lineage, strengths and weaknesses allowed him to customize parts for each voice. Pianist and composer Andy Milne takes this principle a step further on his new recording, The Seasons of Being. Applying the principles of homeopathic diagnosis, Milne generates an optimized environment for improvisation for his long running Dapp Theory ensemble and a host of special guests.

A fearless, versatile explorer, pianist/composer Andy Milne has been a distinct and respected voice at the heart of New York’s creative jazz scene for over 20 years, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, poets and musicians spanning jazz, classical, pop, folk, and world music. At the piano he skillfully blends poetic gravitas with a playful sense of order.

He has recorded and toured throughout the world with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Carlos Ward and Carla Cook, and has collaborated with a range of artists including Andrew Cyrille, Sekou Sundiata, Avery Brooks, Bruce Cockburn, Fred Hersch, Ben Monder, Dianne Reeves, Jen Shyu, Tyshawn Sorey and Jamie Baum. A former student of Oscar Peterson, Milne was at the center of the M-BASE Collective as a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman’s bands, as well as performing with Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby. Milne composed and produced the scores for seven documentary films by acclaimed director William Shatner and has released nine recordings as a leader or co-leader.

Rick Bogart
“Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra” REVIEW
By Mick Carlon

Rick Bogart’s “Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra” is a deeply moving, beautiful musical experience.  With lush strings and varied jazz rhythms, the piece is as fascinating as it is lovely.
What does the composer and clarinetist have to say about this exceptional composition?  “Why are jazz musicians so relegated to playing with small groups in jazz clubs?  Why can’t a jazz musician stand in front of a symphony orchestra and play music that has an improvised aspect?  Mozart, Beethoven, Bach—they were all gifted improvisers.  I really wanted to create something different—something that I could play every night if needed.”
After an opening movement that immediately captures the ear with its depth and beauty, the concerto then switches into a sultry rhythm redolent of rainy New Orleans nights.  “I was trying to make a lush Debussy background with the strings,” says Bogart, “with voicings you can only achieve with a string section—from the bass fiddle to the cello to the viola and to the violins.  You can really voice a chord nicely that way, spread over three octaves. I painstakingly tried to give the strings a full voicing and not be background as in pop music. (I tried) to form different backgrounds and different feelings in each movement connected with cadenzas.”
To this listener, Bogart’s concerto is a deeply involving experience, grabbing both the ear and the intellect, and it is all led by the composer’s liquid, gorgeous clarinet.  “The cheeky part of it all is that I really wanted to make ‘music history’ by writing a concerto for clarinet and orchestra in which the clarinet part is 95 percent improvised.”
For all of its beauty, this is one concerto that does not forget to swing.  “The opening minor theme is completely written out for the clarinet part.  From then on it is an extended set of chord changes against different string backgrounds. There’s a section of twelve bar blues that is not recognizable unless you count it because of the altered chords and dissonances—yet it still has a bluesy feeling.  There are two uptempo sections—one is in major and one is in minor—then for the last movement the concerto moves into the old New Orleans stop time choruses. The strings are playing the stop time along with the rhythm section—then into full rhythm with a perfectly placed flatted fifth in unison with the violins, and then it goes out from there with the strings playing with the piano, bass and drums.  I wasn’t sure if I could do it but…here it is.”
Here it is indeed.  This jazz concerto is a masterpiece of American music, an innovative creation that should be played around the globe.  If there is any justice left—and I believe there is—Rick Bogart’s “Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra” will be collecting Grammy Awards next March.

Multi-Grammy® Award winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra founder Oscar Hernández is all about tradition. Born into a large Puerto Rican family living in the Bronx, it was the nearby Spanish Harlem neighborhood that shaped his cultural musical sensibilities. The soundtrack to this bustling enclave in the ‘60s, emanating from any given window on any given day, was a mix of Latin Jazz and American pop radio. In the spirit of this tradition the Spanish Harlem Orchestra was born.

With each album, and every Grammy nomination, this Latin Jazz powerhouse knows it is crucial to continually push themselves and raise the bar. We are very proud to host Oscar and the members of this world class ensemble on here ArtistShare.

JANE CORNWELL

MARK SULLIVAN
ALL ABOUT JAZZ
“Champions of salsa dura (“hard salsa”), this is a band whose technical skill is matched only by their consistent high energy.”

MARK GILBERT
JAZZ JOURNAL
“There’s huge variety and virtuosity in all departments in this typically bravura performance of New York “salsa dura” – in the writing, arranging, playing and singing.”

A FEW REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN’S SOLO PIANO PERFORMANCES

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

Grammy Jazz voting time!

“If you are a Grammy voter,
please consider Gabriel Mark Hasselbach if voting in
Best Jazz Instrumental Album‘ and
Best Improvised Jazz Solo’

(re: Terra Firma Irma)

shem.gif

Watch the videos and have a listen to MidCentury Modern Vol. 1

Contemporary Fusion Reviews

Nu Brasil” – one of the most spirited Latin jazz tunes I’ve heard (yet) in 2018… you’ll be hearing this one in regular rotation on jazz stations across the country, guaranteed”.
“…as I listen to Sergio’s splendid guitar on the percussion-driven opener, “Down South“, the “thrill is back” – no doubt!…”

”Trem Do Tempo” (Time Train) will sway you gently on your way to Latin jazz oblivion… I can (easily) see this one winning awards this year….”,

Latin Jazz Network
“…Mr Pereira has also taken a leap into the great unknown, so to speak, with music that has complex orchestrations, thereby mixing the traditions of men like Laurindo Almeida and Baden Powell with those of Heitor Villa-Lobos…”

The Vinyl Anachronist
“Pereira’s compositions and arrangements lean toward the impressionistic, resulting in a sound that envelops you with warmth, vivaciousness and a miraculous gift of seduction”.

Sergio Pereira
“Nu Brasil”
(Zoho ZM 201808)

Sergio Pereira-guitar,  Saxophonist Alexey Leon, Spain’s alto sax great Perico Sambeat, Cuban-born flutist and longtime New Yorker Oriente Lopez and Valencia, Spain-based trumpeter-arranger VoroGarcia. Sao Paulo-based electric guitarist Marcus Teixeira, French pianist Baptiste Bailly, Valencia-based bassist Ales Cesarini, Cuban-born bassist Ariel Ramirez, Brazilian harmonica virtuoso Gabriel Grossi and two Brazilian-born musicians now residing in New York City, pianist Helio Alves and drummer Mauricio Zottarelli.

Vocalists Paula Santoro, Sergio Santos and Viktorija Pilatovic lend an air of mystery and allure to the proceedings while rapper Devin Malloy adds the cherry on top of the buoyant opener, Down South.

There’s a certain something inherent in the music of Brazil that goes well beyond the notes and speaks more of the soul of a culture. Like the music of New Orleans, where the feel for an authentic second line rhythm grows out of the pace, the food, the flavor of the Crescent City, the persuasive rhythms of bossa nova and samba are ingrained in the hearts and souls of musicians from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. For guitarist-composer Sergio Pereira, that feeling is deeply imbedded in his DNA and emerges through his distinctive comping patterns.

“I learned by growing up listening to samba rhythms and playing Brazilian percussion at a local school of samba,” says the 59-year Rio native and longtime resident of New York City. “Since I was a kid I have been always playing samba rhythm, making that ‘batucada’ rhythm with my hands and fingers at school until my teachers would tell me to ‘stopmaking that noise!’ I still do it all the time. It’s addictive.”

Pereira’s samba addiction comes to full fruition in spectacular fashion on his ZOHO debut release Nu Brasil,his follow-upto his acclaimed 2016 debut, Swingando. The title Nu Brasil (“nu” = “naked” in Portuguese) references the beauty of his home country where however social inequality still prevails.

A collection of ten thoughtful compositions, this superb set features contributions from a luxuriant crew of 18 world-class musicians including Cuban-born saxophonist Alexey Leon, Spain’s alto sax great Perico Sambeat, Cuban-born flutist and longtime New Yorker Oriente Lopezand Valencia, Spain-based trumpeter-arranger Voro Garcia. Also on board for Pereira’s sophomore release are Sao Paulo-based electric guitarist Marcus Teixeira, French pianist Baptiste Bailly, Valencia-based bassistAles Cesarini, Cuban-born bassist Ariel Ramirez, Brazilian harmonica virtuoso Gabriel Grossiand two Brazilian-born musicians now residing in New York City ispianist Helio Alvesand drummer Mauricio Zottarelli

Vocalists Paula Santoro, Sergio Santosand Viktorija Pilatoviclend an air of mystery and allure to the proceedings while rapper Devin Malloyadds the cherry on top of the buoyant opener, Down South. Says the composer, “I started to work on this song last summer while vacationing ‘down south’ in Puglia, Italy. Changing environment and location often provides me with great vibes for inspiration. It’s a happy samba groove with a magical soprano sax solo from Alexey. Devin’s rap is basically describing the experience of failure in pursuit of your dreams and talks about how life will continue to evolve and will pick you back up after you’ve fallen.” Bailly adds a cascading piano solo here while Pereira contributes an appealingly melodic, clean-toned solo on electric guitar.

East River is Pereira’s poignant reflection on the view from his Upper East Side neighborhood in Manhattan. “I frequently jog on the East Side by the East River and many times, after the jog, I just sit on a bench next to the 59thStreet Bridge looking over Roosevelt Island and Long Island City,” he explains. “It’s very peaceful there with the nice breeze from the river, the sounds of boats going by and the FDR Drive humming with vehicles.” The easy-going number opens with sparse solo piano before being joined by lush strings arranged by Garcia. Pereira plays the opening strains of the melody on his nylon string acoustic then scats simultaneously with his solo on this affecting number, which also carries a slight tinge of melancholy. As he explains, “When my older daughter, now 23, was 4 or 5 years old, we lived on Roosevelt Island.  We had an amazing time together there and I miss those moments. The strings bring out the melancholic moments I had, which I dearly miss, when my daughter was little.”

The seductive Arpoadoris an ode to the beach of that name on the south side of Rio de Janeiro where Pereira spent a lot of his youth. “This was my favorite beach, where I used to wake up really early in the morning to go surfing with friends,” he recalls. “Cool and hip crowds used to hang out there at sunset. People fell in love, hearts were broken and memories were left behind. It’s reminiscing about the time when I was 19, right before I moved to New York — some of the best moments of my life.” Singer Santoro narrates the story of love, passion, beach, summer and the sea with an enchanting delivery that combines the smooth allure of bossa nova and the freewheeling abandon of jazz in her delicious scatting passages and call-and-response exchanges with pianist Bailly near the end of the piece.

Greta is an affecting jazz waltz that Pereira wrote for his newly-born niece. “She is sweet, mellow, easy and tender just like this song,” he says. Flutist Lopez brings the mellowness, tenderness and jazziness that the song calls for while singer Sergio Santos doubles Pereira’s tender electric guitar melody with some sweet falsetto singing. Drummer Zottarelli deftly underscores the proceedings with some briskly swinging brushwork.

The energized title trackNu Brasilis fueled by Pereira’s infectious comping and showcases Lithuanian-born singer Pilatovic, who engages in some rapid-fire scat-and-trumpet exchanges with Garcia at the tag. Originally an instrumental, lyricist Paulinho Nunes brings new life to the upbeat piece while Pilatovic, singing in Portuguese with a ‘Carioca’ accent, brings a jazzy flair to this groovy samba.

Garcia arranges the strings on the lush Per Teand offers a warm, melodic flugelhorn solo on this inviting number. The tight Joao Donato-influenced samba/bossa Sambinhacomes charging right out of the gate with guitar and harmonica locked in tandem on the buoyant theme. Sao Paulo-based electric guitarist Marcus Teixeira, a former teacher of Pereira’s, contributes a Bensonesque solo over the percolating undercurrent provided by drummer Zottarelli and bassist Ramirez. Pianist Alves adds some jazzy improvising on this infectious groove while harmonica ace Grossi contributes remarkably flowing legato lines over the top.
PercussionistDavid Gadeajoins Pereira to fuel this fiery samba groove.

The minor key Trem Do Tempocarries a tinge of melancholy on top of an undulating Ixeja rhythm. Lopez contributes a lovely flute solo while Santoro delivers the alluring Portuguese lyrics in her own inimitable style. Nunes again brings new life to the song with his thoughtful lyrics, which tell us a story about life and the passage of time: “Life is like a train/it slips through your hands/it does not stop in every station. Life is to be lived at each moment. Live it…live it…and live it.”

14 Clicks Away, a slow bossa nova fueled by Zottarelli’s brushwork and Pereira’s steady comping, features an elegant solo by pianist Alves and also showcases Sambeat in Getz-ian mode on this restful, gently grooving number.

The album closes with the jazzy bossa nova Lascia Stare, which fluctuates between sadness and happiness and features Pereira doubling the melody with Grossi. “I always heard the more melancholic first part of the song with a harmonica, so Gabriel was my number one choice to deliver that feeling,” says Pereira.” The leader’s electric guitar solo here is typically melodic and flowing while Bailly adds sparkle with his piano solo. The title, Pereira explains, is an Italian expression which roughly translates to ‘let it go’ or ‘don’t bother yourself with it.’”

From opener to closer, Nu Brasiltakes the listener on a journey that is brimming with exhilaration and passion, soulful reflection and deep-seated feelings that speak of Pereira’s homeland. — Bill Milkowski

Broadway Star and Brooklyn Hall of Famer Jake Ehrenreich joins with Grammy winner / Oscar nominee Roger Kellaway in this critically acclaimed Holiday Release.

Jake and Roger first clicked musically when Jake sang Forget The Woman at a memorial for the great conductor and composer Ettore Stratta, who had written the song for Tony Bennett and his The Art of Excellence Album. The bond between the two was born. Jake flew to LA to record with Roger’s LA Trio featuring Bruce Forman and Dan Lutz. They added Kevin Winard on percussion and the result is this surprising and unique new recording.

A Jewish child of Holocaust Survivors who incongruously grew up loving Christmas music, Jake first explored this theme in his hit Broadway show A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, where the New York Times raved “…a beautiful medley of Christmas Songs written by Jewish composers. Mr. Ehrenreich has a strong voice…his finest moments are dazzling.”

This recording is truly a dream come true.

Based on Dante’s Inferno, this tells the story of the poet Dante in the slums of
Buenos Aires, searching for his love, Beatriz.

From Jazz Station by Arnaldo DeSouteiro:

A sublime three-movement symphonic poem for piano and orchestra. Franzetti reaches his peak as a classical composer, a master in the same level of Brouwer, Scriabin, Delius and Ogerman, while his wife Allison displays her virtuosic talents as one of the world’s greatest pianists.

From Latin Jazz Network by Raul da Gama:
This astonishing account from the pen of Mr. Franzetti clearly sets him up as one of Argentina’s greatest contemporary composers. The performance headlined by Ms. Brewster Franzetti’s piano work together with the ensemble performance by the City of Prague Philharmonic is fantastically seductive.
