This Weekend! (October 26 – 28)

Friday & Saturday    Oct 26 & 27  |  7 & 9:30 pm

Larry Willis Quintet
Larry Willis is a leading American jazz pianist and composer, who has performed in a wide range of styles, including jazz fusion, rock music, Latin music, Bebop and Avant-Garde. After his first year studying music theory at the Manhattan School of Music he began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. After he graduated he made his first jazz recording, McLean’s Right Now!, which featured two of Willis’ compositions. His first recording of any type, however, was as a singer with the Music and Arts Chorale Ensemble, performing an opera by Aaron Copland under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He decided to concentrate on jazz because of the difficulties African American musicians had in finding work in concert music. He is still recording and touring around the world. Throughout his illustrious career he has performed with a wide range of musicians, including a stint of seven years as keyboardist for Blood, Sweat & Tears (beginning in 1972). Some of the other musicians he has played and recorded with include Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Hugh Masekela, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Clifford Jordan, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Earl May, David “Fathead” Newman, Alphonse Mouzon and Carla Bley. Don’t miss the Larry Willis Quintet at the Jazz Forum feat. Josh Bruneau, trumpet, Steve Davis, trombone, Blake Meister, bass, and Billy Williams, drums.

Klaus Mueller Quartet feat. Portinho
A jazz pianist of diverse influences and abilities, Klaus Mueller, was born in Germany and raised in Japan, Chile, and Brazil. He began piano lessons in Japan at the age of six. After graduating from Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts in 1998, he was granted a full scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to further complete his studies at the New School in New York. He has been an integral part of the New York Jazz and Brazilian music scene, having performed and recorded with artists including Portinho, Ron Carter, New York Voices, Harry Allen, Leny Andrade, Paquito D’ Rivera, Steve LaSpina, Emilio Santiago, Marcos Valle, Toninho Horta, and Filó Machado. Tours and workshops have led him throughout the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the Caribbean. Mueller is not only regarded as a fine keyboardist but also as an arranger, most notably for jazz piano legend Herbie Hancock, creating orchestral versions of songs from Hancock’s critically acclaimed “Gershwin’s World” album in collaboration with Robert Sadin in 2003. He also arranged music for the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon, and worked as a musical director and accompanist for the opera singer and Tony Award-winner Paulo Szot. On Mueller’s 2012 album release Far-Faraway, he performed with jazz bassist Ron Carter and Brazilian drummer Portinho. His latest album Village Samba, released in 2016, features mostly original compositions interpreted by some of today’s finest Brazilian and New York-based musicians.

George Coleman Quartet
NEA Jazz Master
A masterful improviser with an ear for both blues-informed lyricism and adventurous harmonics, saxophonist, composer, arranger, educator and NEA Jazz Master, George Coleman, is one of the most respected musicians to emerge out of the hard-bop era. With brilliant technique and a deeply soulful tone firmly rooted in his hometown of Memphis, Coleman has performed with many of the most legendary figures in Jazz and influenced countless saxophonists during his half-century in music.

Intrigued by the music of Charlie Parker, Coleman taught himself to play the alto saxophone. In 1952, at the age of 17, he got his first big break with blues guitarist B.B. King, touring and recording with him for several years. Coleman switched to tenor sax when King needed a tenor man in his band.

In 1956, Coleman moved to Chicago and joined Walter Perkins’ group MJT+3. In 1958, he attracted the attention of drummer Max Roach and was offered a position in his band, requiring Coleman to relocate to New York City. In 1959, he signed on with trombonist Slide Hampton’s octet, which afforded Coleman opportunities to tour Europe for the first time and develop his composing and arranging skills.

In 1963, Miles Davis came calling, and Coleman was soon part of the groundbreaking quintet that included Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. In addition to the group’s four classic albums, Coleman also played on Hancock’s landmark Blue Note recording, Maiden Voyage.

After leaving Davis’ group, from 1964-74 Coleman freelanced as a composer and arranger for various musicians, such as Betty Carter, Chet Baker, Lionel Hampton, Lee Morgan, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, and Cedar Walton. He then began to focus on his own groups, working in quartet, quintet, and octet settings, and adding the soprano saxophone to his instrument repertoire. Coleman has played numerous times at the Jazz Forum, at festivals, in prestigious concert halls and top clubs around the United States and in Europe.

A winner of numerous honors and awards, Coleman has twice been presented the Key to the City of Memphis. In 1997, he received the Jazz Foundation of America’s Life Achievement Award, and in 2012, he was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. See the George Coleman Quartet feat. Jeb Patton, piano, John Webber, bass, and Joe Strasser, drums at the Jazz Forum!

Al Foster, master drummer, has been a major innovator in the world of Jazz for several decades. As a member of the Miles Davis band for thirteen years, Foster’s contribution to Davis’ music is articulated by Davis himself in his 1989 autobiography, Miles: The Autobiography, where Davis describes the first time he heard Foster play live in 1972 at the Cellar Club on 95th Street in Manhattan: ‘He [Foster] knocked me out because he had such a groove and he would just lay it right in there. That was the kind of thing I was looking for. AI could set it up for everybody else to play off and just keep the groove going forever.”

Composer Kirk Nurock’s SONIC PROTEST
A Demonstration in Cacophony

Sunday, October 21, 2018   1 – 3 PM
Union Square Park, North Plaza, NYC

A participatory workshop for musicians and non-musicians,
the event is free and open to everyone.
__________________________________________________

Musicians can heighten the emotional power of protest through the art of outright noise. Given the danger of today’s political climate, these structures invite crowds of musicians to engage in “organized cacophony.” Though built on improvisation, the music is highly structured and arranged.  We seek a community of instrumentalists to help create this turbulent soundtrack.   Thank you!!      -KN

Kirk Nurock orchestrated for Leonard Bernstein and Dizzy Gillespie, conducted a work for twenty voices and three canines at Carnegie Hall, and won a scholarship at age 16 awarded by Duke Ellington.

“A composer-pianist who has always defied categorization”     – Village Voice

“Several of Nurock’s works are specifically scored for untrained, improvisatory participants. Interestingly enough, many newspaper reviews of his presentations seem to revive the alarmed outcries of shocked innocence that greeted first performances of the now-recognized works of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Varese.”        – Nicolas Slonimsky

What we had

shem.gif
Rebecca Angel’s voice makes the difference. With her refined charm, she gives the songs on What We Had the overwhelming splendor.
– Hans-Bernd Hülsmann www.smooth-jazz.de

Jason Miles’ work playing, producing, arranging, and guiding some terrific musicians in support of this must-hear chanteuse brings a real sense of warmth to the work. WHAT WE HAD is a real treat, and Rebecca Angel’s voice and writing are superb evidence of an artist with a very bright future ahead of them. –Chris Gibson Broadway World

Talented young singer Rebecca Angel has released her first EP the memorable “What We Had”, an innovative set of fresh and heartfelt music.

The 22 year-old vocalist has an appealing and captivating voice. Using jazz as her base to explore different grooves, she collaborated with Grammy-winning Jason Miles, who produced recordings of celebrity artists including Miles Davis, Grover Washington Jr., Luther Vandross, etc. Jason is producer and arranger of “What We Had”, her debut EP, Miles and other top-notch musicians accompany her with a variety of backgrounds that showcase her soothing and distinctive voice at its very best.

In addition to Miles’ keyboards, the six selections (plus two remixed performances) utilize such fine musicians as soprano-saxophonist Hailey Niswanger, guitarists Ricardo Silveira, Jonah Miles Prendergast and Christian Ver Halen, bassists James Genus, Reggie Washington and Adam Dorn, drummer Brian Dunne, percussionists Mino Cinelu and Cyro Baptista, cellist Sebastian Stoger, flugelhornist Dennis Angel and flutist Gottfred Stoger. Rebecca excels at singing heartfelt lyrics and showcases her innovative scatting.

Rebecca’s version of the rarely performed Hoagy Carmichael gem “Winter Moon” features interplay between the singer and Niswanger on saxophone, catchy Latin rhythms and a haunting melody.

Rebecca co-wrote the minor-toned and nostalgic “What We Had” with her father Dennis Angel and guitarist Prendergast, a celebratory look at the past.

The Brazilian vocalese “Agora Sim” puts the focus on her instrumental ability in unison with Jonah’s guitar.

“Feel Alive”, which was also co-written by Rebecca, is a superior pop tune that is both funky and infectious.

Leiber and Stoller’s “Stand By Me”, heard in both radio and electro mixes, has a tight bass-drum rhythm, dynamic keyboards, a bluesy vocal by Rebecca and some natural and creative scat-singing.

The program closes with the first-ever vocal recording of Marcos Valle’s 2005 instrumental hit “Jet Samba” which is given both a radio and an electronic Ipanema mix.

Rebecca Angel has loved music all of her life. She remembers her father introducing her to the recordings of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Elvis and the Beatles, Astrud Gilberto and Sade, all of whom became inspirations in her eclectic style.  She graduated with a degree in Vocal Jazz Studies from Ithaca College and has performed at the Iridium, The Metropolitan Room and CaféNoctambulo in New York.

Rebecca Angel creates consistently memorable musical statements throughout “What We Had”, with her substantial talents, a very impressive debut.

Composer Kirk Nurock’s SONIC PROTEST
A Demonstration in Cacophony

Sunday, October 21, 2018   1 – 3 PM
Union Square Park, North Plaza, NYC

A participatory workshop for musicians and non-musicians,
the event is free and open to everyone.

GARY LUCAS PLAYS SPANISH “DRACULA” at THE METROGRAPH NYC FRI. OCT. 19th at 7:30pm

shem.gif
Gary Lucas in Liberec Bohemia   photo montage by Caroline Conejero and Richard Mader

GARY LUCAS accompanies the legendary 1931 Spanish-language “Dracula” film with his original live solo guitar score at The Metrograph, NYC’s premier art-house cinema, on Fri. Oct. 19th at 7:30pm.

Filmed in Hollywood at night on the same sets as Todd Browning’s “Dracula”, directed by George Melford  and featuring an-all Latin cast  (this was before the advent of dubbing technology), the film, like “Dracula” is music-free— Lucas has composed a continuous solo guitar underscore that plays throughout.

Many critics consider this version superior to the original film in terms of its fluid editing rhythms, mobile camera-work, more florid and sensual costumes, and memorable performances by Carlos Villarias as the Conde and Lupita Tovar as Eva.

A pioneer of live film scoring going back to his 1989 live duo score with Walter Horn for “The Golem”,  Lucas premiered his Spanish “Dracula” live score in Dec. 2009 at the La Rampa Cinema for the Havana Film Festival, where it received rave reviews— and has since gone on to perform with the film all over the world, including well-received shows shows at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Transylvania Film Festival,

Sevilla Film Festival, Jerusalem Film Festival, Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City, Krakow Off-Plus Camera Festival, New York Film Festival, Lodz Cinergia Festival,  and many others:

The Metrograph is located at 7 Ludlow Street on the edge of Chinatown..  Tickets can be purchased here:  https://bit.ly/2DVdOcf

This is the first installment in a retrospective series of Gary Lucas’ live film scores at The Metrograph:

Special thanks to Robert Melvin Rubin and Jacob Perlin.

Also:  Gary performs solo acoustic at the WFMU91.1 FM Wake ’n Bake Benefit Art Auction this Sat. night Oct. 20th  at their Monty Hall performance space at 43 Montgomery St. in Jersey City at 9pm.

A superb young jazz pianist, Alberto Pibiri builds upon
the inspiration of Oscar Peterson on his new Jazz Legacy release.

Pibiri also emerges as an important new songwriter, debuting ten originals with his trio, Adrian Cunningham on reeds, and several guests including veteran singers Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton.

Alberto Pibiri is a very impressive up-and-coming jazz pianist and songwriter. His playing is inspired by Oscar Peterson (whose virtuosic style he can duplicate) but he also displays his own musical personality throughout Jazz Legacy along with a real skill for creating fresh new melodies.

On Jazz Legacy, Pibiri is featured in a trio with bassist Paul Gill and drummer Paul Wells that is sometimes expanded by the inclusion of the skilled tenor-saxophonist and clarinetist Adrian Cunningham. The great singers Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton perform together on “For Sure,” Ms. Jordan is featured on “Be Free,” and the soulful “Oh Yeah” has fine vocalizing from Miriam Waks along with a guitar solo by guest Dave Stryker.

The memorable program begins with “For Oscar,” a tribute to Oscar Peterson that sounds like the type of joyful song that the immortal pianist could have written. Pibiri shows what he learned from studying Peterson’s many recordings. “Walkin’” (no relation to the jazz standard) has a laid back and playful melody that inspires a fine solo from Cunningham on clarinet. The beautiful ballad “My Sunshine,” the catchy and likable “New Bossa” (with Cunningham on tenor) and the relaxed “A Blues” could each become standards in the future due to their strong themes and the excellent playing by the musicians.

The blazing tempo of “Kiss Kiss” is easily essayed by the quartet with impressive improvisations by clarinetist Cunningham and Pibiri. Sheila Jordan gives the ballad “Be Free” a heartfelt treatment and interacts happily with Jay Clayton on the scat-filled “For Sure.” “Oh Yeah,” which has lyrics and singing by Miriam Waks in addition to a fine spot for Dave Stryker, has Cunningham recalling Stanley Turrentinewith his soulful tenor playing. The impressive program concludes with the pianist all alone on “It’s Me,” swinging his way through another classic theme.

Alberto Pibiri was born and raised in Italy where he studied classical music and jazz. He was so inspired by the recordings of Oscar Peterson that in his early years his trio often featured Peterson’s music at concerts and festivals in Italy and France. He met Sheila Jordan at one of her workshops in France and she was so impressed with Pibirí’s musical talents that she not only became his main mentor but sponsored his artist visa so he could move and perform in the United States.

Based in New York ever since, Piberi has worked with a variety of top musicians including Ms. Jordan, Dave Stryker, Harry Allen, Essiet Essiet and Les DeMerle. He made his recording debut as a leader with 2011’s NYC (in a quartet with Stryker) and recently toured Australia with Adrian Cunningham, recording Swing It Out for the Arbors label with Professor Cunningham And His Old School. In 2017 Pibiri, who has played at many jazz venues including Smalls, Fat Cat. Blue Note, Trumpets and Shanghai Jazz as both a leader and a sideman, performed at Carnegie Hall.

Jazz Legacy, which is being released by SRI, a label directed by the legendary Shelley Leibowitz, gives listeners the opportunity to hear Alberto Pibiri, a rapidly developing talent, early in his career, performing his memorable songs with top-notch players.

Monterey Jazz Festival 2018 Reviews

“The biggest surprise of the events of Sep. 22 (at this years Monterey Jazz Festival) was a name new to me, Jamie Baum, a diminutive flute player whose imagination is as big as the world. Standing outside Dizzy’s Den in the afternoon, I heard some delicious cacophony coming from the room and thought, oh yes, let’s check this out. Upon entering, I saw a uniquely-configured nonet (including French horn, electric guitar and Baum’s bass flute) playing jazz with off-kilter  meters, stuttering Hebrew rhythms, and ultimately, an extended piece, Honoring Nepal: The Shiva Suite, with a Tibetan bowl providing a drone, a freeform earthquake, gamelan-like patterns, and other eclectic pursuits. It was the most extraordinary music of the festival…”- Richard S. Ginell, Journal of Music Critics Assoc.

“(Of) my top five quick takes (at this years Monterey Jazz Festival): Flutist Jamie Baum’s Septet+ provided another revelation. An exploratory composer and arranger interested in long forms and arresting voicings, she focused on music from her recent album Bridges, which includes pieces inspired by Jewish liturgical chants, music from Nepal, and solos by the late Pakistani Qawwali master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan that she transcribed and orchestrated. Her wide brass palette, including Chris Komer on French horn, and the wild-card guitarist Brad Shepik, filled each piece with exquisite details, like Komer’s horn and Sam Sadigursky’s bass clarinet melding for a moment of beatific calm in “The Shiva Suite,” commissioned in the wake of Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake.” – Andrew Gilbert, SFVC

Bridges CD Reviews

“…what shakes out is the fact that this is uplifting music…(the CD’s) tone generates vivid imagery and a sweeping grandeur. And when Baum’s expanded Septet+ goes big, the music is grander than life. Baum’s lineup is like a future wing of the Jazz Hall of Fame…” – Dave Sumner, May’s “Best Jazz on Bandcamp”

****(four stars) “Always a traveler, never a tourist, Baum constructs significant harmonic relationships between jazz and some far-flung music traditions. Everything connects here: concept and execution, soloists and ensemble, Nepal and New York, spirit and flesh.”  – Michelle Mercer, DownBeat

“ …a fine album of ambitious range and sharp melodic clarity. It’s part of her continuing experiment with blending hypercontemporary jazz strategies and traditional music from the South Asian subcontinent.”

– Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times

“Nothing about this music composed by Jamie Baum is conventional; this is plain to see, so to speak. But because much of this music also comes from cultures that are not even remotely close to her own and yet this music succeeds in inhabiting them – be they Islamic or Hindu and by association, Arabic, Turkish, Azeri, Nepali and Indian – this effort from her on Bridges must be regarded as truly remarkable as the music succeeds magnificently in the setting of themes, details in modes and the manner in which it stands conventional collisions within the broad swathe of its cultural topography on its head. Incandescent, profoundly human and intoxicating in its celebration of the world of nature and of birth and re-birth in the context of Judaic-Islamic-Hindu relationship with the Divine Bridges by Miss Baum is demanding of herself and of performers requiring special treatment at every turn..”

– Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

****(four stars)“This is the latest strong entry in Baum’s discography…that skillfully blurs the lines between multi-layered through-composition, hard, tough grooves and focused improvisation.”

– Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise (UK)

“Bridges is packed with layered counterpoint and dense sonic textures. It’s full of shifting rhythms,— The often-serpentine melodic lines overlap, intermingle and clash for dramatic effect. It takes a top-fight group of players to execute such an ambitious endeavor. And Baum’s Septet+, certainly rises to the challenge. Indeed, (Baum’s) tone has a sonic heft — a thickness — that stands in contrast to the instrument’s often bird-like quality. The Septet+ rhythm section…navigates the labyrinthine tunes with drive and finesse.”

– Eric Snider, Jazziz Magazine Summer 2018

Jay Leonhart Trio
Jay Leonhart has been recognized as a very accomplished bass player for a long time now. He has been named the Outstanding Bassist In the Recording Industry three times and is always mentioned when the discussion turns to the outstanding. At age 13, while playing banjo with his brother in a dixieland band in Baltimore, Jay watched and listened to the bass player and knew that the bass was the instrument he would play forever.
Since that time Jay has been privileged to play with Judy Garland, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Buddy Rich, Jim Hall, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Marian McPartland, Kenny Barron, Sting, James Taylor, Papa Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge, Louie Bellson, Dick Hyman, Luciano Pavoratti, and many more.
Over the years, Jay Leonhart has been writing and singing his own very individualistic songs about his life as a bass player. He now performs his music worldwide to very receptive audiences, appearing primarily with his trio, which plays regularly at Birdland in New York, when not gainfully employed elsewhere.

Jazz trumpeter Chris Pasin releases Ornettiquette, a musical joyride of an album inspired by free jazz pioneers Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry

For his 4th CD as leader, jazz trumpeter Chris Pasin leads his vibrant band Ornettiquette in saluting NEA Jazz Master and Pulitzer Prize winner Ornette Coleman and his long-time collaborator Don Cherry

“Imagine standing on a beach with the tide tugging the sand away under your feet while still feeling grounded in sea
and sand and ski—absolutely thrilling.”

–Michael Hochanadel, Jukebox, The Daily Gazette

With his accessible and entertaining new album, Ornettiquette, trumpeter Chris Pasin and Ornettiquette, his adventurous band of inspired musicians, take a joyous look at the music of saxophonist/composer/innovator Ornette Coleman and his long-time sonic partner trumpeter Don Cherry.

This is the fourth release as a leader for New York-native Pasin, a longtime practitioner of jazz from straight-ahead to avant-garde. “I became acquainted with the music of Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler as a teenager, and played along with their records,” Pasin recalls. “A little later I transcribed ‘Ghosts,’ and started playing it with people, but it was not until recently that the idea of a band playing the music inspired by these heroes occurred to me, thus engendering Ornettiquette.”

Highlights among Ornettiquette’s eight compositions include:

“Ghosts” salutes its composer, Albert Ayler, with steady confidence, from the ethereal vocal/vibes/drums opening, through compelling trumpet/sax interplay, to a tender ending.

A chill-inducing rendition of “Lonely Woman,” among Coleman’s most renowned compositions, featuring an ominous bowed bass undercurrent, introspective vocal, and gripping trumpet solo.

Ornettiquette’s upbeat and jaunty take on the lilting melody of “Tomorrow Is the Question.” Check out the fine saxophone solo and propulsive drumming.

Chris Pasin, a long-time resident of New York’s upper Hudson Valley, earned a dual degree in classical and jazz trumpet performance at New England Conservatory. He has proved his bona fides in both forums, playing with the likes of Gunther Schuller, Toshiko Akiyoshi, George Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Jaki Byard, Buddy Rich and a host of others. Chris has an affinity for collaborating with singers, working with legends including Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett.

This album marks the second collaboration between Pasin and producer Patricia Dalton Fennell on Planet Arts records. The first—2017’s successful holiday album Baby It’s Cold Outside—earned critical acclaim as well as a meteoric rise to the top 50 on the charts.

When Pasin sought musicians to accompany him on his adventures into Ornette Coleman/Don Cherry territory, he didn’t have to look far. Fellow Hudson Valley dwellers Karl Berger (piano/vibes) and Ingrid Sertso (vocals) had both played with Coleman and Cherry. With encouragement from the two icons, Berger and Sertso cofounded the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock in the early 1970s. The pair have played and collaborated with innovators including Don Ellis, Carla Bley, Sam Rivers, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Holland, Eric Dolphy, Steve Lacy, Ed Blackwell, Bob Moses, Pauline Oliveros, Nana Vasconcelos, Olatunji, and others.
Also joining Pasin on Ornettiquetteare:

Alto saxophonist Adam Siegel, who has fronted his own bands over the past decade as well as become an in-demand sideman. Recognized for his intense and original approach, the graduate of Philadelphia’s University of the Arts has played with everyone from Dick Oatts to Pete Seeger.

Bassist Michael Bisio has appeared on dozens of albums as leader, coleader or sideman with the likes of Matthew Shipp, Charles Gayle, Connie Crothers, Whit Dickey, Ivo Perelman, Barbara Donald, Newman Taylor Baker, Sonny Simmons and Sabir Mateen. The winner of multiple awards and grants, Bisio is also a widely respected composer and educator.

Drummer Harvey Sorgen has conducted workshops internationally and performed with Ahmad Jamal, Dave Douglas, Zakir Hussain, Wadada Leo Smith, Roswell Rudd, Levon Helm, Bill Frisell, Carlos Santana, Greg Allman, Jack DeJohnette, and more.

With its invigorating and heartfelt sound, Ornettiquette is certain to delight jazz fans in the know, as well as be a great introduction to the music for the so-far uninitiated.

The Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestrais coming to Orange County Community College [SUNY Orange] on Friday, October 19, 2018. The performance begins at 7:30pm in the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall. The ensemble has a full big band sound thanks to its instrumentation: four trumpets, four trombones, five saxes, acoustic bass, piano, drums, vocalist, and leader Reeves whose instruments are trombone and alto flugelhorn. The featured vocalist, Carolyn Leonhart, was formerlya lead back-up vocalist with Steely Dan. For jazz enthusiasts, this is the real deal – an 18 piece big band of seasoned musicians who love what they do.

The evening will highlight the new CD “Without a Trace” but selections from CD“Portraits and Places” will also be played. Both CDs will be on sale with signing by Scott and his musicians.

In addition to being a composer, arranger, and professor of music and director of jazz studies at CCNY, Scott Reeves is a member of the Dave Liebman Big Band and has played with the Bill Mobley Smoke Big Band, the Vanguard Orchestra, the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and Oliver Lake Big Band. He also leads Manhattan Bones, a septet that highlights four trombonists. Somehow, he has found time to write two textbooks, both published by Prentice-Hall: Creative Jazz Improvisation and Creative Beginnings.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and will be available in the box office starting at 6:15pm the evening of the October 19. All students are admitted free. Online purchase with a $ 2.50 service charge for each ticket is available at www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml

“Gifted with an extraordinary voice, Judith Lorick combines charm, elegance and refinement” – “Les Nuits du Jazz” Cannes (France)

JUDITH LORICK is a vocalist we should have heard from long before now. In an era of exaggeration and pyrotechnics, Judith’s voice is a soothing reminder of what it means to have quality of tone and sophistication, all captured on her latest project, The Second Time Around, an array of popular pieces, warmly and refreshingly treated by Judith and her collaborator, multi-faceted pianist Eric Reed. Supplementing accompaniment is a diverse collection of talent including Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, McClenty Hunter on drums, Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, and a recent arrival to the music scene, tenor saxophonist Chris Lewis.

The Second Time Around celebrates several life events for Judith, most notably the reunion with her long lost love, Artie. To tell the story, Reed encouraged her to select songs that were intrinsic to it; not surprisingly, the most appropriate and moving songs turned out to be ballads. “Eric was in tune to the fact that singing ballads is something that I’m passionate about, and that this passion would resonate with others,” Judith recalls. This heartwarming and poignant tale is rendered through the lyrics of tireless classics like “I’ll Be Seeing You”, the title track “The Second Time Around” and rarer gems like “Why Did I Choose You”and “I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life”. Judith explains her ease with the repertoire, stating, “Interpreting ballads comes naturally to me because they resonate in my soul, and that’s where I sing from, where I live. As long as I can feel it, as long as I can react spontaneously in my interpretation and phrasing, I can relate honestly to people.”More than anything, pure and unfettered honesty pours out of this project.

Judith’s passion is not just limited to ballads, but to music in general. “My mother ‘gave me voice’. She constantly had music on in our home, so by the time I was a teenager, and began to sing jazz, I already knew three hundred songs!”she exclaims. This carefully selected program of songs is rooted in Judith’s natural proclivity towards education:“When I perform, I tend to do songs that people might not know because I feel part of my job is to make people aware of great songs that are rarely interpreted.” In the midst of music, family, and a very successful business career, Judith has found and lost love, finding it againfour decades later; she has lived every lyric sung.

A native of Philadelphia (as is her collaborator Reed), Judith has traversed the globe not only as performer, but as resident, having spent extensive time in southern California, and almost thirty years in the south of France, where she first met Eric at an after-hours jam session in 1995, where “The magic was immediate,”she remembers. “When you breathe together like that, from the first note, well, it was a musical experience one never forgets.”  When Judith returned to the U.S. in 2014, they reconnected after one of Eric’s performancesand not long after, their collaboration ensued – the secondtime around.

“Judith and I were diligent about every aspect of this project, which was a treat for me,”says Reed. “Her trust was paramount in doing this.”Their due diligence paid off in the assemblage of a masterful and sympathetic quintet, an unusual choice for a vocal recording. Judith explains, “I love what Jeremy Pelt and Chris Lewis add to the overall sound. Sometimes, we were just going for sounds and colors versus full-on solos. Eric and I were interested in scoring a storyline versus simply recording songs.”Illuminating further about her collaborator and co-producer, “Eric is amazing – talented, creative, meticulous, and sensitive. He’s not merely an accompanist here, it’s as if we’re singing together.”

Although the songs are familiar, the story of The Second Time Around, is a unique and moving saga about which Judith summarizes,I’m glad I came home. It was time.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Benji Kaplan
http://www.benjikaplan.com/

The son of a native Cuban percussionist father and a prominent American visual-artist mother, Benji Kaplan has followed his arts-filled upbringing with a particular focus upon the classical forms of Brazilian music. Fully informed not only in Brazilian Classical and popular music, but also by Western Classical music and Jazz, the emerging composer crafts his own brand of Contemporary Classical Brazilian music ingeniously spiced with the full gamut of his rich musical understanding. He beautifully expresses his unique vision with ensembles ranging from string quartets to wind ensembles of varying shapes and sizes. His most recent album – Chorando Sete Chores – features 13 pieces for acoustic guitar and wind quintet. Although they are through-composed, they are fully informed by his deep Brazilian and Jazz influences and provides a clear display of the brilliant fusion of elements that is at the core of his sweeping artistic vision. His previous album Uai Sô vividly demonstrates his enormous scope, combining strings, brass and woodwinds in various combinations ranging from seven to twelve instruments.

Inspired by Brazilian music since early childhood, Benji Kaplan releases his 4th album, Chorando Sete Cores (Crying Seven Colors), mixing harmonies and melodies reminiscent of
neoclassical, romantic and impressionistic period music combined w Brazilian inspired melodies and rhythms like maracatu, samba, baião, choro, bolero and maxixe. His compositions are presented on the guitar and deeply colored by the wind instruments, Flute, Alto Flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and French Horn.

The 13 tracks of Crying Seven Colors invite the listener to gain insight in to a world of Brazilian music in a unique format, in which the guitar strips itself of the leading role and merges with the sonority of the winds, forming a set in which each element is essential for the narrative. More than a succession of individual pieces, the album presents itself as a continuous journey that
portrays deep influences of both North American and Brazilian scenarios, in elaborate arrangements that demonstrate the musicality as well as the high technical level of the instrumentalists.

Benji has performed in a wide array of venues such as Cornelia Street Cafe, Dizzy’s Club, Rubin Museum of Art, Zinc Bar, Nublu, and the legendary Rio de Janeiro club “Beco das Garrafas” (Bottles Bar) among many others.

The more than 20 years of Rita’s work in the area of design and animation include periods through broadcasting networks such as MTV and TV Cultura as well as several film producers companies.

New CD

“… Her marvelous tone and technique are astonishing… She is definitely among those who deserves recognition not only among her peers, but the public in general.”

Hubert Laws

“…Andrea Brachfeld has made a strong statement as a flutist, bandleader, collaborator and composer, so she is destined to gain greater attention in the near future.”

Ken Dryden, May 2018,  New York City Jazz Record

“Andrea Brachfeld truly is one of the most important voices in the history of the contemporary flute.”

Raul da Gama, May 2018, latinjazznet.com

On her third straight-ahead jazz album in the last six years, and second for Jazzheads, flutist Andrea Brachfeld is backed by her exceptional and simpatico working band Insight, with bassist Harvie S, drummer Jason Tiemann, and pianist Bill O’Connell, an invaluable longtime collaborator who along with Brachfeld, produced and arranged the CD. It features primarily originals by Brachfeld and O’ Connell, five of them written under a grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The album’s closing track, her rendition of the beloved “Amazing Grace,” is the sole non-original.

Brachfeld is highly esteemed as a flutist, bandleader, and composer, and this new recording is sure to find a warm welcome at jazz radio as well as with the jazz press. Continuing the momentum of her previous Jazzheads release, which earned a 4-star review in Down Beat, a publicity campaign is planned to highlight Brachfeld’s recent forays back to her original love—be bop—after many years of recording and performing Latin music to great acclaim. This soulful album makes the case that she is deeply connected to that first love.

Nate Najar has enthralled audiences across the globe with his trademark and distinctive style of performing jazz on acoustic classical guitar. Continuing on his freewheeling journey as a true musical citizen of the world, he follows the release of his acclaimed 2016 album This is Nate Najar with a warm, soulful, multi-faceted recording reflecting his enduring love for the City of Lights. Under Paris Skies,  featuring Tommy Cecil on bass and Matt Home on drums, explores Najar’s passion for French song with a deeper commitment and purpose than ever before, and showcases the “rabbit hole” of research he did to curate a unique eclectic variety of pop, jazz and classical songs rarely re-imagined by American jazz artist.

“Nate’s playing is quietly spectacular and the sound he gets out of his unamplified guitar is a gorgeous song itself.”  – Jazz Lives

“One of the most consistently interesting and stylish young guitarists on the jazz scene.” – All Music Guide.

“There is no doubt that there is a piece of Charlie’s soul in Nate’s mind, heart and fingers.” – Becky Byrd, wife of the late guitarist Charlie Byrd

“Vinyl Listening Party
at the Mahwah Museum”
Thursday, October 25th 6:30pm

shem.gif
There is a massive resurgence in the popularity of analog music, and in particular vinyl records and the turntables to play them. Sales of vinyl records are sharply increasing every year, and pressing plants are opening all over the world to keep up with the demand.

The Mahwah Museum is celebrating these events by hosting a Vinyl Listening Party event on Thursday, October 25, starting at 6:30pm. This is your chance to see and hear for yourself what this resurgence is all about – to enjoy great-sounding music while relaxing and socializing with your neighbors in the unique environment of the museum.

The October 25 event will focus on Music Of New Jersey. Les Paul, The Four Seasons, Frank Sinatra, and a certain fellow from Asbury Park are just part of the program. There will be old and new music, spanning across multiple music genres. All the selections are coming from carefully selected vinyl pressings that are notable for their vintage and their outstanding sound quality.

This is a truly unique happening that will be a lot of fun and shouldn’t be missed!  The museum is well chosen to co-host this event with Ray since it has on display, among other important artifacts, Les Paul lathe and his sound on sound machine.  Participants in this event will be able to visit this exhibit and hear more about this amazing collection of artifacts.

Ray Ullmer, who will host this event, amid an amazing collection of Les Paul artifacts, has always been a huge music fan, and has been collecting albums in various formats since he was a teen. Throughout all that time, though, vinyl has always occupied a special place in his heart. When he recently upgraded his home system with a new turntable and speakers, he started the Cragmere Vinyl Club for like-minded music fans to play their favorite albums for each other. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/CragmereVinylClub)

Raymond is a technology program & project manager, specializing in corporate Agile transformations.

“Vinyl Listening Party,” at the Mahwah Museum, 201 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah NJ.  Doors open at 6:30pm and the program starts at 7:30pm. Entrance fee: $20, paid in advance to reserve your spot.

Space is limited.

Wine, cheese and hor d’oeuvres will be severed.

For more information, and to make you payment, go to www.mahwahmuseum.org.
