Composer Kirk Nurock’s SONIC PROTEST
A Demonstration in Cacophony

Sunday, October 21, 2018   1 – 3 PM
Union Square Park, North Plaza, NYC

A participatory workshop for musicians and non-musicians,
the event is free and open to everyone.
__________________________________________________

Musicians can heighten the emotional power of protest through the art of outright noise. Given the danger of today’s political climate, these structures invite crowds of musicians to engage in “organized cacophony.” Though built on improvisation, the music is highly structured and arranged.  We seek a community of instrumentalists to help create this turbulent soundtrack.   Thank you!!      -KN

Kirk Nurock orchestrated for Leonard Bernstein and Dizzy Gillespie, conducted a work for twenty voices and three canines at Carnegie Hall, and won a scholarship at age 16 awarded by Duke Ellington.

“A composer-pianist who has always defied categorization”     – Village Voice

“Several of Nurock’s works are specifically scored for untrained, improvisatory participants. Interestingly enough, many newspaper reviews of his presentations seem to revive the alarmed outcries of shocked innocence that greeted first performances of the now-recognized works of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Varese.”        – Nicolas Slonimsky

Louis Hayes Quartet

After developing his skills in the fertile musical ground of Detroit in the 1950’s, Louis found himself, at age18, in New York as a member of the great Horace Silver Quintet. His first recording with Horace, the classic Six Pieces Of Silver would introduce him to the Jazz world. Since then, his career led him to join several of the greatest jazz players, including Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Harold Mabern and Frank Strozier, John Coltrane, & Thelonious Monk. His current endeavor is a project entitled “Serenade for Horace” which is a tribute to his friend and mentor, Horace Silver, and is Louis Hayes’s debut as a leader on Blue Note Records. Louis Hayes Quartet will feature Abraham Burton, sax, David Bryant, piano and Dezron Douglas, bass.

Alan Broadbent Trio
feat. Harvie S and Billy Mintz
Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and by the age of 19, received a Downbeat Magazine scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1969 he was asked to join Woody Herman’s band as his pianist and arranger, an association that lasted for 3 years. In 1972 he settled in Los Angeles and was soon invited into the studio scene as a pianist for the great Nelson Riddle, and also worked with David Rose and Johnny Mandel. Later, Broadbent became a member of Charlie Haden’s Quartet West, touring the festivals of Europe, the UK and the USA. It was while with this group that he won his second Grammy, an orchestral accompaniment written for Shirley Horn of Leonard Bernstein’s “Lonely Town”. As a soloist and with his jazz trio, Broadbent has been nominated for Grammys twice for best instrumental performance. In 2007 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit, an honor he holds in high regard. It has been his lifelong goal, through his orchestral arrangements and jazz improvisations, to discover, in popular music and standard songs, deeper feelings of communication and love.

Jay Leonhart Trio
Jay Leonhart has been recognized as a very accomplished bass player for a long time now. He has been named the Outstanding Bassist In the Recording Industry three times and is always mentioned when the discussion turns to the outstanding. At age 13, while playing banjo with his brother in a dixieland band in Baltimore, Jay watched and listened to the bass player and knew that the bass was the instrument he would play forever.
Since that time Jay has been privileged to play with Judy Garland, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Buddy Rich, Jim Hall, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Marian McPartland, Kenny Barron, Sting, James Taylor, Papa Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge, Louie Bellson, Dick Hyman, Luciano Pavoratti, and many more.
Over the years, Jay Leonhart has been writing and singing his own very individualistic songs about his life as a bass player. He now performs his music worldwide to very receptive audiences, appearing primarily with his trio, which plays regularly at Birdland in New York, when not gainfully employed elsewhere.

Larry Willis Quintet
Larry Willis is a leading American jazz pianist and composer, who has performed in a wide range of styles, including jazz fusion, rock music, Latin music, Bebop and Avant-Garde. After his first year studying music theory at the Manhattan School of Music he began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. After he graduated he made his first jazz recording, McLean’s Right Now!, which featured two of Willis’ compositions. His first recording of any type, however, was as a singer with the Music and Arts Chorale Ensemble, performing an opera by Aaron Copland under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He decided to concentrate on jazz because of the difficulties African American musicians had in finding work in concert music. He is still recording and touring around the world. Throughout his illustrious career he has performed with a wide range of musicians, including a stint of seven years as keyboardist for Blood, Sweat & Tears (beginning in 1972). Some of the other musicians he has played and recorded with include Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Hugh Masekela, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Clifford Jordan, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Earl May, David “Fathead” Newman, Alphonse Mouzon and Carla Bley.

Born to a Brazilian-Jewish mother and a gentile father in Rio de Janeiro, his stage name means “Mandolin Jacob”, referring to his instrument he played. A perfectionist, Jacob was able to achieve with his band Época de Ouro the highest levels of quality. Jacob hated the stereotype of the “disheveled, drunk folk musician” and required commitment and impeccable dress from his musicians who, like himself, all held “day jobs.” Jacob worked as a pharmacist, insurance salesman, street vendor, and finally notary public, to support himself while also working “full time” as a musician. In addition to his virtuoso playing, he is famous for his many choro compositions, more than 103 tunes, which range from the lyrical melodies of “Noites Cariocas” (“Carioca Nights”), Receita de Samba and “Dôce de Coco” to the aggressively jazzy “Assanhado”, which is reminiscent of bebop. He also researched and attempted to preserve the older choro tradition, as well as that of other Brazilian music styles.

About Choro

Brazilian Choro has roots jazz, and is considered Brazil’s first “urban pop” music. There are over 30 different types of rhythms in Brazilian Music. By presenting the diversity of our rhythms, we hope to encourage diverse musicians, music students, adults, and children to engage in creating music with a dynamic communicative style that is energetic, fun, creative, and very inspiring!

The festival first occurred in August 2015, and it was a great success. Due to this positive reception, we will continue with an annual presentation. The event will provide an opportunity for everyone to learn about one of the oldest Brazilian musical genres, the Choro and the Brazilian Jazz.

ABOUT…

The Louis Armstrong™. Educational Foundation, Inc. was founded and funded by Louis Armstrong in 1969 to give back to the world “some of the goodness he received.”

The Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the legacies of Louis and Lucille Armstrong throughout the world to include fostering jazz music programs, performance training, workshops and lectures on the history of jazz.

LAEF is a living legacy to “Satchmo” Louis Armstrong, the most important creative force in the early development and perpetuation of America’s music, Jazz. His influence, as an artist and cultural icon, is universal, unmatched, and very much alive today.

The organization is managed by a 16 member Board of Trustees, Stanley Crouch is the Board President.

Louis Armstrong was born in the Storyville district of New Orleans on August 4, 1901 –he settled in Corona Queens (New York) with his 3rd wife, Lucille. Through the years, Louis travelled the world as America’s “Jazz Ambassador,” entertaining millions, from heads of state and royalty to the kids on his stoop in Corona. Despite his fame, he remained a humble man and lived a simple life in a working-class neighborhood. To this day, everyone loves Louis Armstrong—just the mention of his name makes people smile!

Sheila Jordan NEA Jazz Master (2012), Sheila Jordan (b. Sheila Jeanette Dawson, November 18 1928) is a jazz singer/songwriter who pioneered a bebop and scat singing style using a bassist as her only accompanist. Considered a “musician’s singer” her ability to improvise lyrics has garnered Jordan international acclaim. Scott Yanow described her as “one of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers…a superb scat singer…” Hired as Artist in Residence at City College of New York, in 1974, she became an Adjunct Professor from 1978-2005. Currently on the faculty of Vermont Jazz Center summer workshop and Interplay Jazz & Arts in Woodstock, VT and “Jazz in July” summer music program at UMASS Amherst, at age 79 Jordan maintains an extensive travel schedule performing and conducting clinics.

In May 2017, she received an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from The University of Mass, and The Jazz Legends Distinguished Achievement Award from The UMass Fine Arts Center’s Valley Jazz Network. Other awards include the Lil Hardin Armstrong Jazz Heritage Award (2004), the Barry Harris Award for True Jazz Mastery (2003), Harvard University Visiting Artist Award (1998), State of Michigan Society for the Culturally Concerned Award (1995), a nine-time recipient of the Downbeat Magazine Critics Award, talent deserving of wider recognition (1962-1975) and two National Endowment for the Arts grants. Also in 2012 she received the Jazz Education Network Award for Outstanding Performance.

Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania’s coal-mining country, she returned to her birthplace of Detroit, Michigan, in 1940. Still in her teens, it was in the city’s jazz clubs where she worked semi-professionally singing and playing the piano. Jordan learned well from fellow “Detroiters”; Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris and Kenny Burrell but her first great influence was Charlie Parker.

As a member of the vocal trio, Skeeter, Mitch and Jean (she was Jean), she sang versions of Parker’s solos. When in Detroit, Parker would invite them to sing and introduced her as “the singer with the millions dollar ears.” In 1951 Jordan moved to New York City where she studied harmony and music theory with pianist Lennie Tristano and famed bassist, Charles Mingus but her focus was on the music of Charlie Parker who she credits as both teacher and friend until his passing in 1955.

Throughout the early 1960’s Jordan performed in all of the major clubs, recorded the song, “You Are My Sunshine” with George Russell on his groundbreaking Riverside recording, The Outer View and landed a record deal with Blue Note Records that produced, Portrait of Sheila. During those years she began a fruitful working relationship with pianist, Steve Kuhn, that remains today. Other luminaries with whom she worked and/or recorded are Lee Konitz, Roswell Rudd, Don Heckman, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow. Of the fifty-five albums that feature Jordan, twenty-one are hers as a leader. Her biography Jazz Child: A Portrait of Sheila Jordan was released in September 2014.

“The Queens College Jazz Orchestra” is curated by The Jazz Ensemble Program at Queens College. This competitive program offers students hands on experience working with jazz groups under the tutelage of experienced professional jazz artists. The Queens College jazz faculty includes: David Berkman (Piano), Antonio Hart (Sax), Michael Mossman (Trumpet), Dennis Mackrel (Drums), Aubrey Johnson (Vocal), Charenee Wade (Vocal), Tim Armacost (Sax) and Paul Bollenback (Guitar).

Ensemble program at Queens College covers a broad range of topics from Latin music, original compositions, and the music of a particular jazz composer such as Dizzy Gillespie or Bud Powell, big band, odd and mixed meter, vocal performance and choir.

The Harlem Alhambra was a vaudeville house built in 1905, that eventually became a movie venue and, in 1929, opened a famed upstairs ballroom that hosted swing bands, vocalists and dancers; the legendary Lindy Hopper, Frankie Manning got his start here before moving to the Savoy Ballroom! Today the Alhambra Ballroom hosts events from weddings, to big band and swing dance competitions; and is also home to the Louis ArmstrongEducational Foundation’s Satchmo™ Awards. And on October 12th Sheila Jordan will join the ranks of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday: great vocalists that performed at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem!

“One of the most haromnically innovated and grooving night in jazz”

shem.gif

With Jazz In The New Harmonic, David Chesky and his band of all-star jazz musicians fuse 21st century classical harmonies with the city’s rhythms to create a new genre of jazz.  Jazz In The New Harmonic liberates the pulse, soul, energy, and groove from past traditions; it’s the first encounter with the transcendental music of our age.  Chesky is a first-class provocateur, and his 21st century classical harmonic approach is kicked into high gear with this streamlined New York groove machine.

Talk about setting out to create a mood. And succeeding! A hard-to-pinpoint nostalgic quality permeates the session, the self-conscious noir atmosphere influencing everything from the recording to Chesky’s prominent piano coloration. Feels like the soundtrack for an unmade follow-up to Blow-Up. Dig Jackson’s subdued vibe, so restrained it’s ominous.
John Corbett, Downbeat

..that steady-strolling groove and the overall lack of pretension and unncessary flamboyance keep things centered, resulting in music that suggests an almost zen-like contemplation on the dialectic between control and freedom.”

New CD

“… Her marvelous tone and technique are astonishing… She is definitely among those who deserves recognition not only among her peers, but the public in general.”

Hubert Laws

“…Andrea Brachfeld has made a strong statement as a flutist, bandleader, collaborator and composer, so she is destined to gain greater attention in the near future.”

Ken Dryden, May 2018,  New York City Jazz Record

“Andrea Brachfeld truly is one of the most important voices in the history of the contemporary flute.”

Raul da Gama, May 2018, latinjazznet.com

On her third straight-ahead jazz album in the last six years, and second for Jazzheads, flutist Andrea Brachfeld is backed by her exceptional and simpatico working band Insight, with bassist Harvie S, drummer Jason Tiemann, and pianist Bill O’Connell, an invaluable longtime collaborator who along with Brachfeld, produced and arranged the CD. It features primarily originals by Brachfeld and O’ Connell, five of them written under a grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The album’s closing track, her rendition of the beloved “Amazing Grace,” is the sole non-original.

Brachfeld is highly esteemed as a flutist, bandleader, and composer, and this new recording is sure to find a warm welcome at jazz radio as well as with the jazz press. Continuing the momentum of her previous Jazzheads release, which earned a 4-star review in Down Beat, a publicity campaign is planned to highlight Brachfeld’s recent forays back to her original love—be bop—after many years of recording and performing Latin music to great acclaim. This soulful album makes the case that she is deeply connected to that first love.

The String Trio of New York is an American jazz chamber ensemble. The group was founded in 1977 by bassist John Lindberg, violinist Billy Bang, and guitarist James Emery. Though they initially worked on improvisational playing and on their own compositions, they eventually began taking on commissions, as well as doing arrangements of other jazz musicians’ work.  For over two decades, the Trio has been one of the most active touring ensembles of its kind and has performed hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, East Asia, India, the Middle East, and North Africa. Their international jazz festival appearances include Berlin, Paris, Zurich, Vancouver, Toronto, Leipzig, Cracow, Victoria, Edmonton, Lovere, Tampere, Leverkusen, Warsaw and others. Hailed by critics worldwide, the Philadelphia Inquirer said that the Trio “…is solidly prepared, but offers the excitement of improvisation projected through unshakable musicianship.”

Four top European and American jazz artists
combine forces to create eight colorful and intriguing originals.

The post-bop music covers a variety of moods, puts the emphasis on the ensembles, and is full of subtle surprises.

SHIJIN is a co-op group consisting of saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart, keyboardist Malcolm Braff, bassist Laurent David, and drummer Stéphane Galland. Each of the musicians has vast experience in a variety of idioms with creative jazz being the foundation. For their self-titled recording debut, the international quartet performs eight group originals that, while open to fusion and the funkier side of jazz, are beyond any simple classification and reflect their varied musical journeys.

The opening “Smells Funny” is a menacing strut that has tenorist Schwarz-Bart and bassist David playing the theme with the support of keyboardist Braff and drummer Galland. The music soon gets heated with the soloists improvising over an infectious groove. The funky “Anemoi” is concise with Schwarz-Bart taking the lead on soprano with the electronic ensemble building up the music before fading out.

The colorful “Afro Bear” lets listeners imagine a bear having some adventures in the wilderness. The episodic piece has a catchy theme and mostly focuses on the group’s distinctive ensemble sound. “New Neighborhood” features a folkish melody that is played by Schwarz-Bart at several different tempos over the stimulating rhythms.

While a generally laidback performance, “The Bait” finds the group infusing the number with plenty of passion. “Blitzt’s Z’Zuri?” has a hot tenor solo from Schwarz-Bart and features Braff playing complex lines on his keyboards. “Discomania” is not really disco but 1970s-style fusion with Braff taking the lead. SHIJIN concludes with “The Edgewater Hotel,” a joyful original based on a rhythmic figure played by Galland.

Each of the musicians has had impressive solo careers. Jacques Schwarz-Bart was born in Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Being the son of a pair of prominent writers, he seemed headed for a career as a statesman. However at 24 Schwarz-Bart began playing the saxophone, he started studying at Berklee three years later, and he has been a busy musician ever since. Along the way he has worked with Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor, Danilo Perez, Ari Hoenig, Meshell Ndegeocello, D’Angelo and Chucho Valdes. As a leader he formed the Gwoka Jazz Project, blended modern jazz with ritual voodoo music in The Jazz Racine Haiti project, and collaborated with pianist Omar Sosa in The Creole Spirits.

Stéphane Galland, who is from Belgium, started playing drums when he was three. After taking lessons in classical percussion, he began playing jazz when he was 11. With his group AKA MOON, he has recorded over 20 CDs and performed worldwide. Galland has explored many different cultures in collaborations with artists from Africa, India, Asia, Turkey, Europe and America and has worked with such top jazz artists as Joe Zawinul, Joe Lovano, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Mark Turner, and Robin Eubanks. His own project LOBI explores multiple ancient musical traditions in a modern and futuristic way.

Pianist and keyboardist Malcolm Braff was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, grew up in Dakar and Switzerland, and began playing piano in public when he was just six. He has led over 20 records of his own and has performed around the world, often leading his own groups.

Bassist Laurent David from Paris started out studying classical guitar before switching to the electric bass guitar when he got involved in jazz. He has worked and recorded with the jazz trio TRIAS, guitarist Ahmad Mansour, Ibrahim Maalouf, and a variety of adventurous improvising musicians, appeared at many European jazz festivals. He is the creator and artistic director of the non-profit music label Alter Nativ recently shifted his home base to New York.

The combination of Schwarz-Bart, Galland, Braff and David results in musical magic throughout the consistently intriguing, accessible and unpredictable SHIJIN.

What The Press Is Saying About Jared Gold’s “Reemergence”
DownBeat Magazine Editor’s Pick

Bobby Reed
Most jazz fans have encountered the unfortunate scenario of being thrilled by the names on an album cover but then being disappointed by the music. That is definitely not the case with the new leader project from Jared Gold, which showcases the versatile organist and his all-star band: guitarist Dave Stryker, drummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. Stryker, who also produced the album, has a 14-year history with Gold, and his simpatico rapport with the organist spices up the proceedings, as each musician frequently adds clever coloration when the other is unleashing a sturdy solo. Hart—whose subtle brushwork is just as mesmerizing as his powerful stick-work in this program—demonstrates the mastery that has made him a legend. Pelt, who adds potent brass to three tracks, elevates this disc: Without him, these sessions might have yielded a memorable trio disc, but with him on board, the result is one of the strongest straightahead discs of the year thus far.

This band certainly can burn, as evidenced by the title track (which was penned by the leader), but a poignant reading of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” reflects Gold’s ability to tug at the listener’s heartstrings with a melancholy mood. Gold has curated a wonderful, eclectic program that features two Gershwin tunes (“It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “How Long Has This Been Going On”), Ornette Coleman’s “Blues Connotation,” Stevie Wonder’s “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love” (from 1972’s Talking Book) and “One For John A,” a swinging, original tribute to the late guitar icon John Abercrombie, with whom the organist worked for years. Gold and Stryker can ignite fireworks at will, but on this rendition of “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” both musicians coax a vocal timbre out of their respective axes. Nicely done, gentlemen.

…one of the year’s strongest titles to date and upon repeated listening  gets so much more enjoyable. – CJ Shearn Jazz Views

Jeff Know-Audiophile Audition
…this is a CD that will be loved by Hammond fans, and highlights Gold’s talents as both a creative organist as well as arranger. His talents have matured and hopefully we’ll see more exploratory efforts from Jared well into the future.

Dick Metcalf  contemporaryfusionreviews.com
Jared Gold hoppin’ Hammond B3 jazz Jared Gold – REEMERGENCE:  Without doubt, Jared is one of THE best Hammond B3 jazz players .

Dee Dee McNeil LA Jazz Musical Memoirs
Billy Hart, on drums, fuels the first and title tune, “Reemergence” composed by the featured artist, Jared Gold. Gold is a fresh, jazz -organ, recording artist making waves on the East Coast. This is his eighth recording, and he’s surrounded himself with a group of excellent musicians to support his musical concepts. Dave Stryker is not only a proficient guitarist, but a record producer with his own label, a composer and a very busy New York musician. Drummer, Billy Hart, is legendary and was once the drummer of choice with the great Jimmy Smith. Trumpeter, Jeremy Pelt, is a refreshing addition to the organ trio. The first thing that stands out about Jared Gold is his ability to take familiar songs like Stevie Wonder’s “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love’ or the Lennon/McCartney standard, “She’s Leaving Home” and turn them into harmonically fresh works of art. Gold’s creativity with harmonics is formidable. Gold started out as a piano player, but quickly found his expressive niche on the organ. He was born in Englewood, New Jersey February 27, 1980 and has worked extensively with Oliver Lake and John Abercrombie. This ninth album as a leader solidifies his unique approach to his instrument and his excursions into arrangements that are unique, like the title tune that roots itself in an unusual fourteen-bar blues pattern. On the tune, “Sweet Sweet Spirit” he takes us to church. Songs like “Ornette Coleman’s Blues Connotations” show the listener that he can groove with the best of them and also gives Hart an opportunity to break free and exuberantly solo on the drums. Jared Gold comes into sight and prominence once more, just like the title of this CD proclaims.

Jonathan Widran JWVIBE
Recently voted the Top Rising Star on organ in an annual Downbeat poll, NYC based B-3 visionary Jared Gold fashions a dynamic through line to the generation of jazz organ that inhabits his muse by including, on his Strikezone debut Reemergence, legendary drummer Billy Hart, who got his start in the 60s with Jimmy Smith.

Ensembling again with guitarist Dave Stryker (who also produced), and adding trumpeter Jeremy Pelt to the fold, Gold creates an explosive melodic and rhythmic master class on the organ’s wide-ranging possibilities. He re-imagines Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Gershwin, an Ornette Coleman blues classic and a renowned church song – but saves his most imaginative expressions for his easy swinging tribute to John Abercrombie (who he played with for a few years) and Stryker’s adventurous closer “Nomad.”

“Gifted with an extraordinary voice, Judith Lorick combines charm, elegance and refinement” – “Les Nuits du Jazz” Cannes (France)

JUDITH LORICK is a vocalist we should have heard from long before now. In an era of exaggeration and pyrotechnics, Judith’s voice is a soothing reminder of what it means to have quality of tone and sophistication, all captured on her latest project, The Second Time Around, an array of popular pieces, warmly and refreshingly treated by Judith and her collaborator, multi-faceted pianist Eric Reed. Supplementing accompaniment is a diverse collection of talent including Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, McClenty Hunter on drums, Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, and a recent arrival to the music scene, tenor saxophonist Chris Lewis.

The Second Time Around celebrates several life events for Judith, most notably the reunion with her long lost love, Artie. To tell the story, Reed encouraged her to select songs that were intrinsic to it; not surprisingly, the most appropriate and moving songs turned out to be ballads. “Eric was in tune to the fact that singing ballads is something that I’m passionate about, and that this passion would resonate with others,” Judith recalls. This heartwarming and poignant tale is rendered through the lyrics of tireless classics like “I’ll Be Seeing You”, the title track “The Second Time Around” and rarer gems like “Why Did I Choose You”and “I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life”. Judith explains her ease with the repertoire, stating, “Interpreting ballads comes naturally to me because they resonate in my soul, and that’s where I sing from, where I live. As long as I can feel it, as long as I can react spontaneously in my interpretation and phrasing, I can relate honestly to people.”More than anything, pure and unfettered honesty pours out of this project.

Judith’s passion is not just limited to ballads, but to music in general. “My mother ‘gave me voice’. She constantly had music on in our home, so by the time I was a teenager, and began to sing jazz, I already knew three hundred songs!”she exclaims. This carefully selected program of songs is rooted in Judith’s natural proclivity towards education:“When I perform, I tend to do songs that people might not know because I feel part of my job is to make people aware of great songs that are rarely interpreted.” In the midst of music, family, and a very successful business career, Judith has found and lost love, finding it againfour decades later; she has lived every lyric sung.

A native of Philadelphia (as is her collaborator Reed), Judith has traversed the globe not only as performer, but as resident, having spent extensive time in southern California, and almost thirty years in the south of France, where she first met Eric at an after-hours jam session in 1995, where “The magic was immediate,”she remembers. “When you breathe together like that, from the first note, well, it was a musical experience one never forgets.”  When Judith returned to the U.S. in 2014, they reconnected after one of Eric’s performancesand not long after, their collaboration ensued – the secondtime around.

“Judith and I were diligent about every aspect of this project, which was a treat for me,”says Reed. “Her trust was paramount in doing this.”Their due diligence paid off in the assemblage of a masterful and sympathetic quintet, an unusual choice for a vocal recording. Judith explains, “I love what Jeremy Pelt and Chris Lewis add to the overall sound. Sometimes, we were just going for sounds and colors versus full-on solos. Eric and I were interested in scoring a storyline versus simply recording songs.”Illuminating further about her collaborator and co-producer, “Eric is amazing – talented, creative, meticulous, and sensitive. He’s not merely an accompanist here, it’s as if we’re singing together.”

Although the songs are familiar, the story of The Second Time Around, is a unique and moving saga about which Judith summarizes,I’m glad I came home. It was time.”

The jazz guitarist Peter Leitch is pleased to announce his upcoming live appearance at The 75 Club lower Manhattan’s new jazz club in Tribeca.

Due to recent health issues Peter has not been able to play the guitar as the result of extreme nerve damage to his nerve plexus on his left arm from radiation and chemotherapy, but is now in recovery writing and conducting new music for his 14 piece New Life Orchestra.

Peter says, “Although I miss the ‘in the moment’ improvisational aspects, not being able to play an instrument has allowed me to conceptualize music in a larger, more orchestral sense. At the same time, I realize the importance of integrating enough space in the music for these great soloists.”

Acoustic guitar: Chad Coe
Arco bass: Dennis James

Directed by Peter Leitch. All arrangements by Peter Leitch.
All music composed by Peter Leitch (with the exception of Monk’s Round Midnight and Jed Levy’s The Minister’s Son).

“The New York jazz scene is saturated with great musicians. A lot of them don’t get a lot of press, and you don’t see them playing in the high profile venues. But they are out there in the trenches and playing on a high level. There wouldn’t be much of a New York scene without them. Guitarist Peter Leitch has been out here on the battlefield for a long time. He is the epitome of excellence, always playing great, and never letting the standard drop.”

Liz Rosa Group
feat. Roni Ben-Hur
Liz began her musical career in 2002 at the age of sixteen, she was born in Natal and after establishing her presence in the northeast of Brazil, she moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2007 where she lived for 10 years and has captured the attention of listeners and critics worldwide with her interpretation of the classic Brazilian songbook.

In 2012 celebrating 10 years in the professional music field, Liz recorded her debut album “LIZ ROSA”. Liz’s influence of several Brazilian rhythms including baião and samba and American jazz work perfectly with the samba-jazz flavor presented throughout the album. The result transcends musical boundaries while still featuring a sophisticated, swinging Brazilian jazz atmosphere with lean and inspired arrangements by  Ricardo Silveira.

After establishing her presence in Brazil and Europe, Liz Rosa moved to New York City in 2017 to pursue the next levels of her musical development.

Liz has performed at many respected venues and festivals around the world such as the Blue Note Rio, Festival de Jazz de Punta del Este, Rigas Ritmi Festival, The Lyric Theatre (Toronto, Canada), Jazzahead (Bremen, Germany), Mezzrow (New York, USA) and at NYC’s Birdland. Liz has also performed with well-known Brazilian artists including João Bosco, João Donato and Roberto Menescal. Liz will collaborate with guitarist Roni Ben-Hur in a quartet setting at Jazz Forum.

Judy Niemack Quartet
feat. Jim McNeely, Doug Weiss, Leon Parker
Born and raised in Pasadena, California, Judy gained her early experience singing in her church choir. She first heard Jazz through her mother’s Nancy Wilson records, and discovered that she could easily sing harmonies when she and her sister sang background vocals behind her brother, who played guitar and sang lead.

Judy studied classical singing and was encouraged to make it her focus, but the turning point in her young career was when she met the great tenor-saxophonist Warne Marsh.

Starting in the late 1970s, Judy became a talented composer and a lyricist who wrote words to such pieces as Clifford Brown’s “Daahoud,” Thelonious Monk’s “Misterioso,” Bill Evans’ “Interplay,” Richie Powell’s “Time” and Duke Jordan’s “Jordu,” and songs by Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Dexter Gordon, Gigi Gryce, Kenny Dorham, Curtis Fuller, Bob Brookmeyer, Richie Beirach, Don Grolnick, Steve Slagle, Mike Stern, Johnny Griffin and many others. One of the driving forces behind her writing is the desire to have lyrics that are more modern and relevant than many that are part of the famous but overly familiar songs of the 1930s and ‘40s. Judy Niemack will visit from her home in Germany to perform at the Jazz Forum with Jim McNeely, piano, Doug Weiss, bass and Leon Parker, drums.

Louis Hayes is considered by many as one of the chief architects of modern jazz drumming.
