John Mayall
Saturday, June 10 at 8pm

“The Godfather of British Blues” is coming to Peekskill’s Paramount Theater!

English blues singer, pianist, harmonica player, guitarist, and songwriter John Mayall has an impressive musical career that spans over 50 years. He founded the band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the 1960s—a band whose members included many celebrated blues and blues rock guitarists, such as: Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, and Buddy Whittington.

Attracted by the West Coast climate and culture, Mayall then made his permanent move from England to Los Angeles in 1968 and began forming bands with American musicians. Throughout the next three decades, Mayall became further revered for his many jazz/rock/blues innovations featuring such notable performers as Blue Mitchell, Red Holloway, Larry Taylor, and Harvey Mandel. Mayall’s popularity continued with a succession of dynamic albums, including the Grammy-nominated Wake Up Call that featured guest artists Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Albert Collins. and Mick Taylor.

In 2008 Mayall made the decision to permanently retire the Bluesbreakers name and in 2009 started a new era of touring. His latest album is Talk About That. Mayall has also recently released never-heard before live albums from 1967 featuring Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood, which along with the new studio albums have been enthusiastically received by critics and fans alike.

Don’t miss this rare state side appearance, as the band is coming all the way from Australia to celebrate the release of their Album, Urban Soul.

From beginning to end, listeners will hear the pair’s innate instincts, the perfect partnership, the gorgeous groove of two friends making music. “We love jazz beyond the traditional sense,” says Albare. “I think that Jazz of the 21st Century is all encompassing. There are no limits.”

The collaboration between Guitarist Albare and Phil Turcio started 27 years ago when Albert Dadon   aka Albare   was looking for a new pianist for his band. At the time Phil had just turned 18. Since their first encounter, Phil’s and Albare’s paths keep on intersecting.

Phil explains that he and Albare hear music in the same way, “Everything I throw at Albare comes back as if I would have played it myself.” Albare likes to describe Phil as his musical soul mate.

They are joined by Gerry Pantazis on drums and Peter Mollica on bass.

About the New CD URBANITY Urban Soul

The collaboration between Albare and Phil Turcio started 27 years ago when Albert Dadon – aka Albare – was looking for a new pianist for his band. At the time Phil had just turned 18. Albare recalls, “He was not even the youngest member of the band then; our drummer just turned17.” “These guys sounded so good, itwas a pleasure already to play with them.” Phil explains that he and Albare hear music in the same way, “Everything I throw at Albare comes back as if I would have played it myself.” From beginning to end, listeners will hear the duo’s innate instincts, the perfect partnership, the gorgeous groove of two friends making music. “We love jazz, but not in the traditional sense,” says Albare. “I think that Jazz of the 21st Century is all encompassing. There are no limits.” That thought is evident as Albare and Phil Turcio come together as Urbanity.

SAY HELLO TO SUMMER
WITH WEEK-LONG
RIVERVIEW JAZZ FESTIVAL
JUNE 3-10

Free Events Throughout Hudson County, NJ, Spotlighting
A Spectrum Of Jazz And Salsa Styles

Relax and enjoy spectacular views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline at Jersey City’s family-friendly festivals. Catch free outdoor performances by world-famous musicians, plus children’s activities, food trucks, beer gardens, art exhibitions, vendors, and more.

The fifth annual Riverview Jazz Festival is back and bigger than ever, with two free all-day concerts in Jersey City, and dozens of other events throughout Hudson County.

The week-long festival is bookended by the free outdoor blowouts, at riverside sites offering gorgeous views of the Hudson River and Manhattan. These major events feature all-day concerts starting at noon on June 3 and June 10, in Jersey City. In between, there will be about 30 other events, concerts and gigs throughout the county, presenting some of today’s best players in jazz and salsa music.

“Jersey City is among the most diverse areas in the country. About half the artists we’re presenting live around here,” says Bryan Beninghove, the executive director of the nonprofit RiverviewJazz.org. “It’s a great time to be in this area. People are taking chances, opening new businesses and presenting live music in many places.”

The music-filled week-long fest starts at noon on June 3, with the URBY RJF Kick-off Festival, where there will be breath-taking views to go with the smokin’ sounds. The event is held on the Mack-Cali parking lot of the URBY Jersey City residential community, close to the Hudson River at 3 Second Street, providing a stunning Manhattan cityscape as a backdrop to the day’s festivities. Everyone is welcome to relax and enjoy a packed program of music. No one has to miss a note while checking out the unique items offered by a variety of vendors; there’s also a children’s tent, plus an array of food trucks, a beer garden and more. This combination guarantees a good time will be had by all at this URBY-sponsored event.

The June 3 lineup includes:

Guitarist Mark Whitfield:

It’s hard to think of anyone he hasn’t played and collaborated with across every genre, starting with his teacher and mentor George Benson. Mark has put out more than a dozen albums as a leader, and has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Mary J. Blige, Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Herbie Hancock and Chaka Khan, to name just a few.

Lakecia Benjamin & Soul Squad:

Here’s a saxophonist with an energy level even the young James Brown may have envied. Besides playing President Obama’s inaugural ball, Lakecia has appeared with straight-ahead jazz greats including Clark Terry, avant-gardists like David Murray, and pop stars such as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and the Roots. With her funk-soul band, Soul Squad, Lakecia can be counted on to bring listeners to their feet. “We’ve been trying to get her here for years,” Bryan Beninghove notes.

NY Mambo All-Stars:

By the time NY Mambo All-Stars’ musical director John “Dandy” Rodriguez was 17 years old, he was already such an accomplished percussionist that he was in the esteemed Tito Puente Orchestra. John spent more than 30 years with Puente’s bands, and also performed with the likes of Ray Barretto, Tito Rodriguez and other Latin music icons. He was a founding member of the Latin Giants Orchestra, as well as Tipica 73, and is recognized as a percussion and Latin music innovator.

The following Saturday, June 10, the Riverview Jazz Festival week supplies another full day of fun family festivities starting at noon at Riverview Fisk Park in Jersey City. This time, the array of amazing entertainment will be presented on two stages, for listeners’ enjoyment. All of the other important elements will be on hand once again: stunning views of the river and skyline, tempting treats from food trucks, activities for children, a beer garden for adults, and vendors well-stocked with one-of-a-kind finds. There’s plenty of room to stretch out on blankets or lawn chairs and soak up the fun.

The June 10 concert lineup includes:

The Snarky Horns:

The horn section from the three-time Grammy-winning band Snarky Puppy offers an exciting mash-up of jazz, funk, R&B, world music, pop and more. Don’t call this critically acclaimed ensemble a jam band or a fusion band, but don’t be surprised to hear some of those elements.

Charenee Wade:

This vocalist/arranger/composer/educator recently released an album of Gil Scott-Heron’s music that showed up on the top 10 lists of more than a few jazz journalists. Charenee has recorded with such diverse artists as Bobby Sanabria, Matt Wilson, Oscar Perez, Rufus Reid and Aaron Diehl, and can always be counted on to make her own unique statement.

International Jazz Quartet featuring Jimmy Cobb:

At 88 years old, drummer Jimmy Cobb has a whole world of American music in his hands. The NEA Jazz Master secured his place in history with Miles Davis and John Coltrane, but also accompanied the likes of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Wes Montgomery and countless others. “Jimmy Cobb has played so much great music, and he just keeps sounding better and better,” notes Bryan Beninghove.

The Fania Project:

Featuring Latin artists associated with the ground-breaking Fania record label of the 1960s and 1970s, under the direction of percussionist John “Dandy” Rodriguez.

Also scheduled to perform June 10 are Ted Chubb, Camille Thurman; Moore’s Lounge All-Stars featuring Wycliffe Gordon, under the direction of Winard Harper; Beninghove’s Hangmen, Stephane Wrembel, and DJ Prestige.

Among the other festival events are: Leni Stern at Fox and Crow on June 3; Charlie Apicella & Iron City at Riverview Farmers’ Market at noon on June 4; and Manouche Bag at Madame Claude Bis, June 6 and June 8. For a full lineup of the dozens of other concerts and events at the fifth annual Riverview Jazz Festival, keep an eye on RiverviewJazz.org for regular updates.

“Our goal is to further jazz, further live music. We want to shine a light on people doing live music in the area, and to let listeners know what’s available so close to home,” says Bryan Beninghove. “We’re not pushing an agenda, we want to reach people with different kinds of music, and great players from different genres.”

Admission is free to both of the bookend concerts scheduled for June 3 and June 10. However, a limited number of VIP passes are available for $95 donation. VIP ticket-holders  will receive a free T-shirt, admission to VIP tents at both flagship concerts, food and cocktails supplied by local restaurants, meet-the-artist opportunities, and more. The tickets are offered as part of a fund-raising initiative supporting year-round programming produced by RiverviewJazz.org.

The Riverview Jazz Festival is made possible in part by Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, and the Office of Cultural Affairs; our media sponsor, The Hudson Reporter; URBY, Hudson Kitchen, and AJB Events.

This program is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a division of the Department of State, and administered by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Thomas A. DeGise, Hudson County Executive; and  the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

NYC Premiere of Blood,  a composition by Jason Kao Hwang

blood meditates upon the emotional traumas of war retained within the body as unspoken vibrations that reverberate throughout communities and across generations. Through blood the violence of deeply held memories are not relived but transposed into our sound and liberated into song. blood in our sound rises within our voice to protest and defy humanity’s constant state of war. blood regenerates and flows to entrain an infinite spectrum of waves into wholeness and strength.

One evening, while driving down an unlit highway, my headlights flashed upon the bleeding carcass of a deer. My heart rate thundered and air abandoned my lungs with explosive force as I swerved away, narrowly avoiding a collision. This shock to the senses made me reflect upon my mother’s harrowing experiences during World War II in China. She was in a pharmacy that was bombed by the Japanese. Knocked unconscious, she awoke as the lone survivor surrounded by the dead. I also thought about the musicians who fought in Viet Nam, like Billy Bang and Butch Morris. The magnitude of pain and sorrow that they endured is unimaginable.

Extreme danger triggers powerful, diametrically opposed forces, “fight or flight”. This conflict can produce an immobility response, which penetrates and remains within the body as emotional trauma. Similarly, when a bomb explodes, there is blast wave outward that leaves a near vacuum in its wake. This is filled by an equally deadly blast wind in the opposite direction. Within an explosion, blood was created.

Violinist Jason Kao Hwang stands at the crossroads of his influences – classical, jazz and traditional Chinese music – and sets the divisions between them ablaze.
DOWNBEAT, Shaun Brady

Hwang has his finger firmly on the racing pulse of the 21st century, where everything interconnected and boundaries of time and geography seem hopelessly quaint.  If there is a war cry for music of the new millennium, it might well be:  Burn the bridges – there’s no going back. Stephen Brookes, The Washington Post

In the complexity and richness of these compositions, the sense of how accomplished Hwang—and all these musicians—are as instrumentalists can easily be lost… Burning Bridge is both a transcendent and challenging experience, and with repeated listening the characteristics of each movement can shift in emphasis, and become reinvented. All About Jazz, Karl Ackerman

New CD
“The Breathe Suite”

DownBeat Magazine July 2017

In this ambitious six-movement suite, Hammond B-3 organist Gregory Lewis addresses the sinister and sharply rising count of African American deaths at the hands of police officers. The Breathe Suite is a major development in his work, and an elaboration of the Organ Monk combo’s 1960s-inspired groove concept. This album’s individually dedicated suite movements are divided between a tight trio (featuring regular guitarist Ron Jackson) and a quintet formation (featuring guests Marc Ribot and Nasheet Waits). Each movement tends to have its most intricate sequences near the beginning, acting as a platform for subsequent directness. On the second movement, “Trayvon,” Lewis leaps up to the high end of his organ, trilling, racing and frilling, as Jackson solos with a mellower liquidity. The quintet pieces tend to reveal greater complexities, as expected, with the fourth movement, “Eric Garner,” featuring a portentous organ and guitar dialogue.

Lewis has retained the groove, but now has a high concept, and a series of elaborate framing devices. His work immediately demands a heavy itinerary of live performances. —Martin Longley

All Compositions by Gregory Lewis

The 30-minute ensemble showcases at the annual Chamber Music America conference typically run the gamut from string quartets to small jazz combos to the occasional outlier—a reed quintet (which replaces the ute and French horn of standard wind quintets with a saxophone and bass clarinet), a klezmer band, or at the most recent conference, a duo of trumpet and kora (the 21-string harp-lute played in Mali, Senegal, and the Gambia). But one of the most unusual groups ever to be presented at the CMA conference, in 2016, was an organ trio fronted by Greg Lewis (a.k.a. Organ Monk). A virtuoso on a Hammond B-3 electric organ accompanied by electric guitar and drums set has been a popular instrumental combination for soul, jazz, and R&B for more than half a century, but the material performed by Lewis and his sidemen—a standard, a Thelonious Monk classic, and some Lewis originals—took the format to some unexpected places. The music was contrapuntally intricate yet super funky, and often incredibly loud. Their rendition of “Lulu’s Back in Town” was joyously raucous and their take on Monk was appropriately o -kilter. But the new material was what was the most revelatory.

Each of Lewis’s pieces was dedicated to an African American who had been killed during confrontations with police o cers. Of course music, unless it involves singers and sung words or an interpolated spoken word narration, is more abstract and introspective than a news report can ever be. But merely attaching a verbal title to an instrumental composition anchors it for listeners and has the potential to serve as an outlet for a deep emotional interface with a topic that can transcend an immediate reaction to a eeting headline. Think, for example, how a work like Penderecki’s searing Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima conveys the horrors of atomic warfare in a way that is far more visceral than reading a history book (even though the title was actually an after- thought). Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, and the horri c episodes that led to their deaths have been permanently etched into the general public’s conscience. But Lewis, by a xing their names to his musical compositions, provides a platform for their stories to enter our subconscious and for audiences to pay tribute to who these people were. This music, though at times dirge-like and appropriately angry, is ultimately resilient and celebratory; it allows us not only to mourn their deaths but to remember their lives.

“I can’t protest, because if I protest I go to jail. And if I go to jail, I can’t feed my ve kids. So what I can do is what I do: I write music. … I want to get this record to each of the people … Even if it brings joy for just a minute to these families, that’s what I can do.”

The Ballad of Fred Hersch

Live solo piano performance
by Fred Hersch

Q&A with fellow composer/pianist Mike Holober

Thursday, Jun. 22 2017, 7:30

With three dozen recordings as a leader/coleader and numerous awards, including a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and Jazz Pianist of the Year 2011 by The Jazz Journalists Association, Fred Hersch is also the first artist in the history of New York’s legendary Village Vanguard to play weeklong engagements as a solo pianist. He has received eight Grammy nominations—as pianist and composer (two in 2012 for Alone at the Vanguard).

Hersch has collaborated with an astonishing range of artists in jazz (Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, Art Farmer, Stan Getz and Bill Frisell), classical (Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Christopher O’Riley), and Broadway (Audra McDonald), and has exerted a profound influence on a new generation. His celebrated trio received two 2014 Grammy nominations, for Floating, and, in 2011, he mounted the ambitious jazz theater piece My Coma Dreams. His newest release, Fred Hersch SOLO, has received rave reviews, including this from All About Jazz: “When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are currently two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else.”

Hersch and Holober are collaborating on the concept and form for a concert-length jazz orchestra project involving Holober’s arrangements of Hersch’s compositions.

Tickets & Info

The eclectic pianist/composer DAVID LOPATO will debut his new quintet,
GLOBAL COOLANT at KITANO JAZZ.

Lopato, recipient of multiple composition and performance grants from the NEA, NYFA, Meet The Composer  et al, has toured his own compositions from solo piano to 10-piece ensemble internationally for three decades.  He has worked with Dave Liebman, Dewey Redman, Joe Lovano, Wadada Leo Smith, Ray Anderson, Steve Gorn  Mark Helias et al, and has recorded his own compositions on the Lumina, Enemy, Unity and Global Coolant labels.

This new quintet will incorporate some of his Asian influenced music into the program, a prologue to the release  of his new gamelan-inspired large ensemble CD “Gendhing for a Spirit Rising” this September.  Not to be missed!

“an inventive and resourceful pianist…his compositions never faltering for a second”
The New York Times

“Lopato’s stylistic range and technique are prodigious”
Downbeat Magazine

Critical praise for the solo piano recording “Many Moons” (Global Coolant 01):

“Many Moons is an amazingly varied retrospective of sorts of David Lopato’s compositions of the past three decades. The album is so eclectic that it also provides an overview of many of the facets of solo jazz piano. From stride to blues, bebop, bluegrass, avant-garde improvisation, prepared piano, and ballads, the common thread that connects the music is a love of textural and harmonic richness and a very personal approach to the creation of improvised music. …An extraordinary album.”
Mainly Piano.com

“Lopato’s performances are as impressive and strikingly individual as his compositions, as demonstrated on “The Big Bad Wolf Ain’t So Bad After All”, a rollicking and striding tour de force performance suggesting influences from Tatum and Ellington.”
Cadence Magazine

“Lopato’s compositions and performances display an inner logic, whether conjuring Willie “The Lion” Smith or James P. Johnson on the fascinating “The Big Bad Wolf Ain’t So Bad After All,” or swimming in the murky and perilous waters of artists like John Cage and Conlon Nancarrow (“Piano Roll”). …Lopato’s music exudes an inextinguishable spirit of optimism and hope”

Dave Valentin Celebration of Life

Dave Valentin Celebration of Life

May 18, 2017

To: Listings/Critics/Features

MONDAY, JUNE 12th 6pm

SAINT PETER’S CHURCH

619 Lexington Avenue at 54th St.
New York, NY 10022

(Bronx, NY) A Musical Celebration of Life for the renowned Latin jazz flautist Dave Valentin will take place Monday, June 12, beginning at 6 PM at Saint Peter’s Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street in Manhattan. The Grammy Award winning-artist passed on March 8 after a long illness at 64 years of age.

In addition to remarks from family and friends, Valentin’s long time group will perform, led by pianist / musical director Bill O’Connell, with bassist Lincoln Goines, drummer Robby Ameen, and percussionist Sammy Figueroa. Additional musicians expected to perform include flutists Andrea Brachfeld, Connie Grossman and Karen Joseph, as well as trombonist Papo Vázquez and other artists to be announced.

Heralded as “the Pied Piper of the Bronx,” Dave Valentin was born of Puerto Rican parents in 1952 and lived his entire life in the borough. His love for music started quite early; playing bongos and congas before he was 10 and even working Latin clubs in New York by 12. His talent and interest took him to the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he began studying percussion. Valentin changed to flute and complemented his formal education at school with private classes under master flutist Hubert Laws. While teaching music in the South Bronx public schools, Valentin appeared on his first recording in 1977 with Ricardo Marrero and the Group. Two years later, he was the first artist to be signed to the popular GRP recording label, where he made some fifteen recordings as a leader. In 2002, he won a Grammy Award with vibraphonist Dave Samuels and saxophonist / clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera for the Caribbean Jazz Project’s recording The Gathering. In addition to leading his own groups, Valentin served as musical director for Tito Puente and his Golden Men of Latin Jazz.

There is no admission charge to the service, and seating is general admission. Donations can be made in Dave Valentin’s memory to Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the Bronx or the Jazz Foundation of America.

SWING46, New York’s Best Jazz Supper Club, Excited to Partner with New Broadway Musical BANDSTAND During 20th Anniversary Celebration

SWING46, New York’s Best Jazz Supper Club, Excited to Partner with New Broadway Musical BANDSTAND During 20th Anniversary Celebration

SWING46, New York’s Best Jazz Supper Club, Excited to Partner with New Broadway Musical
BANDSTAND
During 20th Anniversary Celebration

New York, NY  (5/14/17) — For 20 years, big band fans have counted on SWING46 to present live jazz music for dining and dancing nightly. But now you can see swingin’ big bands every night of the week on TWO stages in the historic Times Square neighborhood.

That’s because the new hit Broadway musical
BANDSTAND — now playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater — is a swing-fueled, against-all-odds story of jazz singer/songwriter Donny Novitski and his big band: All WWII vets home from the war and looking to make new lives for themselves as musicians in postwar America.

Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award® winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, In the Heights), the show stars two-time Tony nominee Laura Osnes (Cinderella, Bonnie and Clyde), Broadway sensation Corey Cott (Newsies), and Tony winner Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone), this exciting instant classic has found a natural partner in SWING46.

“BANDSTAND is a brand-new musical on Broadway that takes place in 1945. SWING46 has been the pre-eminent jazz and swing supper club in New York for 20 years. Both our club and the show bring both historic awareness and modern freshness — and we both are committed to bringing swing music and culture to audiences and tourists here in New York,” said club owner John Ahktar.

“It was an obvious and easy move to have SWING46 host a nightly ‘afterparty’ of sorts for BANDSTAND attendees,” said SWING46 Promotions Director George Gee, who also leads his eponymous Orchestra from the club’s stage at least twice a week.

Theater patrons are invited to come to the club after the show, present your BANDSTAND ticket stub or email receipt, and get a discounted cover charge that same day (FREE cover Sun-Thurs or 50% off on Fridays and Saturdays).

But really, every night is a party at SWING46 Jazz Supper Club — especially during the club’s 20th anniversary celebrations … a month of celebration SO big they need five weeks to fit it all in!

During its anniversary “month” May 26 – June 30, SWING46 will present favorite acts every night, including the George Gee Swing Orchestra, Swingadelic, the Stan Rubin SwingEra Big Band and the Ron Sunshine Orchestra. Check out
our calendar for full details!

Get there early for a beginner dance lesson every night, with instruction by the club’s own teachers or from the club’s official dance studio partner,
You Should Be Dancing…!

In addition to serving up great music, SWING46 is frequently lauded (and Zagat-rated!) for its
fine Modern American cuisine. Guests can choose to dine in the showroom, in the bar, or even out on the recessed streetside patio when the weather suits.

This intimate and elegant atmosphere is found mere steps away from Times Square and Broadway’s theaters, right in the heart of Manhattan, at 349 West 46th Street.

For more information, be sure to visit our redesigned home on the web,
http://swing46.com/  This completely fresh look offers a brighter user experience, more prominent social media interactions, and quicker access to key information and photo galleries.

Produced by: Ronny Whyte

Ronny Whyte is of that rare breed: a seasoned performer, comfortable in the concert hall, dinner club, jazz room or cabaret. He doesn’t simply play and sing notes: he understands the lyrics and he tells the story. You believe him when he displays shades of Whyte in this aptly titled CD and exclaims “The Song is You”and “I Love the Way You Dance”. There’s heartfelt sincerity in his requests to “Linger Awhile” and “Love Me Tomorrow”, he no doubt means it in “I’ll Tell You What”. An imaginative arrangement of that ‘50s tale of a young girl’s awakening may strike a nostalgic note in “Nina Never Knew”.

This collection is also seasoned with “A Little Samba” and a trio of songs with a Bossa Nova beat. Some vintage Jerome Kern, Blossom Dearie, Vernon Duke, Lerner & Lane and Schwartz & Dietz round out the program with style and heart. I am delighted to add this bouquet to

my collection.  —Elliott Ames WVOX- AM 1460, WVOX.com

SAY HELLO TO SUMMER
WITH WEEK-LONG
RIVERVIEW JAZZ FESTIVAL
JUNE 3-10

Free Events Throughout Hudson County, NJ, Spotlighting
A Spectrum Of Jazz And Salsa Styles

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jersey City, NJ May 8, 2017

MORRISTOWN
JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19th

Much Anticipated Free Festival Brings Top Artists to the Green

The seventh annual Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival will be held on the Green in Morristown, New Jersey on Saturday, August 19, from noon until 10:00 p.m. This year’s free concert has a Jersey link for four out of the five groups to appear.

The festival begins at noon with the Grammy Award-winning Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, undoubtedly one of the best known and most popular jazz bands in the country. Performing the music of the Twenties and Thirties, the Nighthawks have appeared in many films including “Carol,” “The Cotton Club,” “The Aviator,” and “Finding Forrester.”  And it was their music and frequent performances on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” that made them an international sensation and provided a close link with the Atlantic City of the Prohibition Era.

At two o’clock, legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli returns to the stage with his quintet featuring his long-time partner Ed Laub on guitar, his number two son Martin Pizzarelli on bass, the young sensation Linus Wyrsch on sax, and Ken Levinsky on piano. Born and raised in Peterson, Bucky may be 91 but he maintains a youthful exuberance and unparalleled virtuosity on his distinctive seven string guitar. Bucky is in the New Jersey Hall of Fame among his many honors.

Then at four, thanks to the law firm of Sherman Wells, the festival is proud to bring back to the stage Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses who were a sensation in 2016. The band not only plays the music of his incomparable father, including such hits as “Jump Jive ‘an Wail,” “Just a Gigilo,” and “Sing Sing Sing,” they very much have their own sound and material. Louis Prima Jr. has close ties to New Jersey as his mother Gia Maione Prima was raised in Toms River and graduated from Toms River High School before embarking on her own singing career.

At six o’clock, the music turns the blues with six-time Blues Music Award nominee Ana Popovic and her band. The California-based guitar-player and singer tours the world and has become a popular performer at blues festivals both here and abroad. She was the only female guitarist invited to be part of the Experience Hendrix Tour, sharing the stage with stars like Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Zakk Wilde. And her records routinely reach the top of the Billboard Blues Charts.

The full day of music concludes with The Walter Trout Band led by the critically-acclaimed guitarist. Walter Trout was born and raised in Ocean County, New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles to break into the blues circuit. He quickly earned a reputation backing greats such as John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield, and Joe Tex. In 1981, he became lead guitarist for Canned Heat where legendary bluesman John Mayall heard him and invited him to join the Bluesbreakers. Following in that group’s tradition of great guitars, such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor, helped Trout solidify his reputation as a top player. When he finally went out on his own, he became a chart-topping star in Europe. He is a 3-time winner of the “Overseas Artist of the Year” from the British Blues Awards, a winner of the prestigious Sena European Guitar Award, a 3-time Blues Music Award nominee, a top-ten guitar player in the BBC’s Guitarist Listeners’ Poll, and a winner of two Blues Music Awards in 2016.

The Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival is made possible thanks to Mayor Tim Dougherty and the Town of Morristown. It takes place on the Green in Morristown from noon until 10:00 p.m. Admission is free and many local restaurants offer specials for festival attendees. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

New York City native keyboardist, singer and songwriter Dave Keyes is a 30 year veteran of the Blues, Roots and Americana music scene. He has released five highly acclaimed albums under his own name, has been named the “Best Unsigned Artist” by Keyboard magazine, and also has been nominated by the Blues Foundation for the annual Pinetop Perkins best piano player award. His sixth album titled “The Healing” featuring Popa Chubby and many other special guests is slated for release in May.

Dave has played with some of the most important figures of blues, roots and folk music, having had long musical relationships with Odetta, David Johansen, Bo Diddley, rockabilly legend Sleepy LaBeef and gospel great Marie Knight among many others. In addition to his own solo gigs and gigs with the Dave Keyes Band, he currently can be found playing with Popa Chubby, Rock and Roll Queen Ronnie Spector, and gospel/blues innovator Alexis P. Suter and the Ministers of Sound.

Dave’s music finds its roots in deep blues, soul and rock and roll. These roots are the foundation of his recent albums and vibrant live shows. His recent albums have received 3 ½ stars from Downbeat magazine and are rambunctious sets of mostly original material that range from New Orleans second line funk to slow sensual blues, swaggering shuffles and boisterous rocking boogie woogie.

Dave ‘s live work both with his own band and with others, have earned him many kudos including the Dave Keyes Band winning the Blues Foundations International Blues Competition. His festival appearances under his own name include King Biscuit, Mississippi Valley, 3 appearances at France’s prestigious Cognac Blues Festival and annual appearances at Lugano, Switzerland’s Blues to Bop festival among many others. The last several years, Dave has also toured Europe extensively with both Popa Chubby and Ronnie Spector often doing double duty opening the shows as a solo artist.

In addition to those mentioned previously Dave has also worked as a sideman for a who’s who of roots music masters such as Eddy Clearwater, Big Jay McNeely, Tracy Nelson, Gladys Knight, Pam Tillis, Darlene Love, and the late great Ruth Brown, Lou Rawls and Levon Helm.

Over the last 20 years, Dave has worked in many roles as a band leader and conductor for both Broadway shows and TV, most notably conducting over 600 performances during the 6 year Grammy winning Broadway smash run of Smokey Joe’s Café. Dave also served as the musical director and band leader for the nationally syndicated NBC TV morning show “the Ainsley Harriott show”. Since then, he’s conducted and performed in the orchestras of Broadway musicals Lennon, Urban Cowboy and the Earth Wind & Fire inspired Hot Feet.

Dave also writes music for televison and the media. With saxophonist Chris Eminizer, their company Crave Music creates underscoring and songs that have appeared in numerous TV and films.Their work runs the gamut from emotional underscore, to vintage R&R, to contemporary Alternative and Indie Rock.

Harry Warren was my great uncle on my father’s side of the family. My great grandparents were Leon Charles Munro and his wife, Mamie (or Mae as my grandfather called her). Mae’s maiden name was Guaragna. Her parents where Antonio and Rachel Deluca Guaragna. They changed their last name to Warren after coming to America. Harry was one of Mae’s brothers. I never got the chance to meet Harry in person but my grandfather often talked about him. I knew I wanted to do a project celebrating his music.

Harry Warren was the rst major American song composer to write primarily for lm. Every song on this CD is from a movie (except for the two songs I wrote). All of this music (except Nagasaki 1928) is from the 1930’s and 40’s. The songs are arranged in the hot swing style made popular by the great guitarist Django Reinhardt with violinist Stephane Grappelli and the Hot Club de Paris. The main body of work from Django Reinhardt is from the same time period. It was an easy marriage of styles taken from the same point in history on two di erent continents.

The scope of this project was a bit daunting, it took almost 3 years to re ne the concept, pick the songs, write the arrangements and record/ lm the music. The music was recorded live in four sessions with four di erent groups. We recorded a lot of songs, of which 16 are presented here.

TENOR SAXOPHONIST MICHAEL PEDICIN

NEW CD
“AS IT SHOULD BE: BALLADS 2,”

With the April 21 release of As It Should Be – Ballads 2, tenor and soprano saxophonist Michael Pedicin continues to spread the message of acceptance and justice he eloquently shared on his critically acclaimed 2011 album Ballads … searching for peace. “I’m one of those diehard ’60s kids that grew up concerned about peace and togetherness,” Pedicin explains. “I think about that every day of my life. We’re all one.”

In addition to covers of John Coltrane’s “Crescent” and Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the album, his 14th as a leader, features eight ballads by longtime collaborator guitarist Johnnie Valentino. Pedicin and Valentino are joined on the recording by Frank Strauss on keyboards, bassist Mike Boone, drummer Justin Faulkner (of Branford Marsalis’s band), and percussionist Alex Acuña. With the exception of Acuña, all are either from, still live in, or have roots in Philadelphia.

Ballads showcasing the exquisitely lyrical aspects of Pedicin’s playing are the focus of the album, but several songs were treated to somewhat brighter grooves than had been originally intended after the musicians got to the recording studio, particularly “From Afar,” which was double-timed at a bossa-nova-like clip by Faulkner and Acuña.

Pedicin also continued his non-musical education, earning a Ph.D in Psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine/International University for Graduate Studies in 2002. The shingle above his office in Linwood, NJ, reads “Dr. Michael Pedicino” as he recently changed his last name back to the one immigration gave his grandfather in 1906 when he arrived at Ellis Island from Foggia, Italy. While he has no plans to change his name in the world of music, he is in the process of obtaining dual American-Italian citizenship.

The new album is just the latest chapter in this master musician’s ongoing quest to help make Philadelphia’s sobriquet as the City of Brotherly Love a reality for human beings of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities through sweet melodies and gentle improvisations. “My goal with this CD,” Pedicin explains, “was to create some pretty and accessible jazz in ballad form. This is not about revolutionizing the art form we so love, but providing a soft and relaxing platform on which to enjoy it.”

Michael Pedicin will celebrate the release of As It Should Be: Ballads 2 at the following engagements: 4/16 Smalls, NYC; 4/22 Exit Zero Jazz Festival, Cape May, NJ (for which Pedicin is Artist in Residence); 5/12 Trumpets, Montclair, NJ; and 5/13 Chris’ Jazz Café, Philadelphia. Personnel is the same as on the new CD, minus Alex Acuña and with drummer Anwar Marshall subbing for Justin Faulkner. •

Tamir Hendelman is a phenomenon—blistering technique, quick wit as an improviser, and profoundly refined pianism. Born in Tel Aviv, Tamir began studying piano at age 6. Almost four decades later, Tamir commands the high ground as composer, arranger, educator and performer.

Tamir famously drives the piano seats of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He serves on UCLA’s jazz faculty. And he has burnished his career as the go-to arranger and accompanist for singers—Natalie Cole, Roberta Gambarini, Jackie Ryan and Barbra Streisand among them.

As composer and leader, Tamir guides his own trio and has produced 2 acclaimed albums.

One is reminded of the likes of Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett: an inventive genius coupled with a dynamism that lifts an audience to its feet by the show’s conclusion.

Glenn Rifkin. Artsfuse

What increasingly distinguishes Hendelman is his gift for imaginative arranging. For one thing, he will compose an introduction that makes it difficult to predict what follows, but seems perfectly suited—even organic—once the tune begins.

Dr. Judith Schlesinger, All About Jazz

Watch Live at Spazio’s with Lewis Nash (drums) and Marco Panascia (bass). Tamir Hendelman’s latest album “Destinations” is available here now.
