CRITICAL ACCLAIM
for Denny Zeitlin with Buster Williams, bass & Matt Wilson, drums

” Denny Zeitlin is not simply a very good pianist. He is a great one… one of the most highly accomplished musicians writing for and performing on the instrument today… throughout this magnificent record (superbly engineered at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, at Jazz At Lincoln Center) one is continuously impressed at how Mr. Zeitlin is alive to the complex pleasures of contemporary music. .. and how blessed he is to have two of the most magical players on their instruments…”  Raul da Gama, Jazzdagama

“…Williams creates giant ripples, Wilson is like unto a force of nature, and Zeitlin storms and swirls without leaving the listener behind,  maintaining a (restless) lyricism throughout… Zeitlin is up there in the pantheon with Corea, Tyner, and Herbie Hancock.”  Mark Keresman, ICONDV

“… Wishing on the Moon represents the Denny Zeitlin Trio at the peak of its powers, on one those nights—this was recorded live at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York in 2009—when all the gears meshed, and all the stars aligned around that shining moon. ”
Dan McClenaghan, Allaboutjazz

“There’s so much for the ear on jazz pianist Denny Zeitlin’s new live trio album, Wishing On The Moon, that the mind boggles… traditional straight-ahead lyricism banked up against a restless, avant-garde spirit of total invention… It takes a certain kind of genius to balance lyricism with adventure. Zeitlin, who practices psychiatry, is that genius, an artist who truly understands what it means to play in the clouds, while holding onto the audience with entrancing music, regardless… Wishing On The Moon celebrates jazz, in all its wondrous forms. Unapologetically, without ego. Just pure, true trio music as Denny Zeitlin’s nature intended.”
Carol Banks Weber, Festivalpeak

“Recorded live at New York’s Dizzy’s Coca-Cola in March 2009, this newly released album features Denny at his explorative best, taking standards apart and reassembling them with curiosity and daring…”
Marc Myers, Jazzwax

“… in gestures large and small, guideposts laid out by form and instinct, a time-strengthened sense of equilateral idealism, and an open-minded aesthetic, this outfit continually creates music to marvel at… Whether updating classics, presenting program music, playing to the map, or moving a step beyond, this group proves to be a model of unabated creativity and class…” Dan Bilawsky, Allaboutjazz

A definitive trio…during a 2009 concert at Dizzy’s Coca Cola, Denny Zeitlin’s trio with Matt Wilson/dr and Buster Williams/b delivers a textbook example of interplay, teamwork and swing that should be used in many a music school…” George W. Harris, Jazzweekly

“Denny Zeitlin’s Wishing On The Moon is a vital document of a trio that’s been gigging for some eighteen years, led by one of jazz’s most innovative keyboardists of the last half century and completed by a rhythm section of notable leaders themselves… ”
S.Victor Aaron, Somethingelsereviews.com

“…Like the best trios, it’s a group of equals…because of that trust, musicality, and willingness to go where inspiration takes them, the music they create is such a joy to listen to… classy, melodic, rhythmical, often stunning, and great fun…”  Richard B. Kamins, Steptempest.blogspot

“… a killer 2009 date with his long time trio live from Dizzy’s recorded when all the stars were perfectly aligned… The jazz piano trio is so in the moment, it almost feels  like they weren’t aware they were being watched by an audience… this wonderfully played date is a solid reminder of why we became music fans in the first place…”
Chris Spector, Midwestrecord

“…I’ve been listening to Denny’s music in performance and on recordings for over 50 years and I view each new opportunity to do as another episode to hear his quest for truth… Wishing on the Moon continues his search for honest artistic expression at the very highest level. It’s been a pleasure to be able to accompany him on this journey.”

Alvin Queen Trio – OP  a tribute to Oscar Peterson

Stunt  STUCD 18157

Available February 22, 2019

Beyond their professional relationship as bandmates, Oscar Peterson and Alvin Queen were also good friends. Thus, this tribute to the great pianist is a heartbeat for the drummer who played with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in Oscar Peterson’s famous trio during the coda of Peterson’s life. That Alvin Queen has chosen to record in collaboration with two Danish musicians speaks volumes about the musical level of pianist Zier Romme and bassist Ida Hvid.

After a long and active life in jazz service, Queen, the 67-year-old drummer who has played with an impressive list of jazz giants, knows what he’s doing. Romme, the 26-year-old Peterson-inspired virtuoso, has already gained great recognition on the Nordic jazz scene with his undeniable talent and impressively mature playing, despite his young age. 38-year-old Ida Hvid (known from Niels Jørgen Steen’s Monday Night Big Band, among other projects) is now a pioneer on the frontiers of contemporary European jazz. This trio constellation is a unique meeting between the seasoned and young, where all three play with the same goal and purpose: creating classical chamber jazz as the master himself cultivated it – outgoing, sparkling, groovy, dynamic, swinging, soulful, and melodic music taken from OP’s extensive repertoire.

The word “tribute” is defined as “an act, statement, or gift that is intended to show gratitude, respect, or admiration.” Alvin Queen created this powerful musical statement as a gift to my Dad showing his deep gratitude for the time they were able to spend together performing all over the world. His admiration for Dad was always shown during the time they spent together, not just on the bandstand, but backstage, at restaurants, in hotel rooms, and airports, where they would share cherished moments of conversation and laughter. The respect that Alvin had for Dad as a man and, of course, for the music they performed is shown not only in this project, but in how he has taken the lessons he learned while they were on the road together and applied them to his own career.

Alvin has worked with the best of the best in terms of musicians considered to be “jazz legends” and as a result has earned his spot as one of the most in-demand players in the industry. This is something that Alvin does not take lightly, and he has worked for years to maintain the dignity and respect in this music that those before him worked so hard for. To me, Alvin is a friend, an Uncle, and a cherished confidant with whom I have nothing but fondness for. Alvin came into Dad’s group during what would end up being our last years of touring, and while there were many challenges and difficulties, we always maintained that we were a family and the band did much more than support Dad on stage. They supported both my parents and I in whatever ways we needed, both on and off the road.

My love for Alvin is never-ending and I am grateful to him for bringing this project to life and for sharing with us music from a formative piece of his musical journey. This CD is one that I will cherish for the rest of my life, as I will my relationship with Alvin. Dear Alvin, thank you for this beautiful physical presentation of the true definition of the word “tribute.”

All my love,

Céline Peterson

Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas
has a sultry new Valentine’s Day Single
 “Waitin’ Just For You”

shem.gif

This classic blues song was originally recorded in the early 1960’s by Ray Charles, but The Lonesome Fellas apply their own Chicago roots & swing styling to Rays big sound. A plaintive love duet written by Carolyn Leigh and Henry Glover, it features Solitaire Miles harmonizing with guest vocalist Saalik Ahmad Ziyad  about their longing to be together. It’s not a trifling ditty though… the mood is tigerishly led by sax maestro Eric Schneider who animates the whole song with his characteristic big-and-brawny, down-home Chicago style, giving a performance that even Von Freeman would be proud of!   Don Stille brings echoes of Ray Charles to the piano, Neal Alger strums soulful  blues on guitar, while Bassist Chris Bernhardt and drummer Phil Gratteau keep it all cool.

The Lonesome Fellas are best known as a Roots and Western Swing band, but they play a rousing “Sweet Home Chicago” groove on this love song, which will certainly bring some heartfelt romance to your Valentine’s Day. – JM Reid, Chicago Music Guide

You can listen to and download the single at their Bandcamp page here – https://susiebluelonesomefellas.bandcamp.com/track/susie-blue-the-lonesome-fellas-waitin-just-for-you

Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas has also just been nominated by the Academy of Western Artists for “Best Western Swing Band” of the year, and vocalist Solitaire Miles was nominated for “Best Western Swing Singer” of the year.  The awards will be held in Fort Worth Texas this March and featured in Billboard Magazine.

Lyn Stanley’s
“London Calling A Toast To Julie London”
Set For Release On Valentine’s Day Weekend

shem.gif
Award-winning vocalist Lyn Stanley follows her top-selling Moonlight Sessions
with an ultimate tribute to Julie London

Set for release on Valentine’s Day weekend, Lyn Stanley honors the Great
American Songbook icon with 17 classic songs on
London Calling…A Toast To Julie London

Limited Edition 33RPM 180g two-disc vinyl and Super-audio CDs

In this stunning new collection—London Calling…A Toast To Julie London—listeners will discover a side of singer Lyn Stanley that they haven’t heard before. The 17 tunes on this recording explore phases of romance from first glance, in “Blue Moon,” to a missed chance, in “Cry Me a River.” Most of the wide-ranging material presented here was originally recorded by singer/actress Julie London, along with a couple of offerings that Stanley feels would have been perfect for the sultry songstress, such as “It’s Impossible,” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

With her distinctive sound and approach, Lyn Stanley brings to mind a method actor, mining the stories and feelings in each tune and getting to the heart of the lyrics. Striving for sensitivity, Stanley stays true to these stories and portrays the experiences of people engaged in the dance of romance.

London Calling marks a big step forward in Lyn Stanley’s evolution as a recording artist. Just five years after her 2013 debut album—Lost in Romance—this new recording provides a unique vision of Julie London with a self-curated set list emanating from Lyn Stanley’s clear idea of how each tune should sound. She holds true to the composers’ ideas, while integrating her own.

Working with many of LA’s best session players, and without any written arrangements, the intimate collaboration is nothing short of remarkable. Stanley says: “It was a thrill to hear something that you’ve brought to life come all so easily.” The stellar lineup of musicians includes guitarist John Chiodini; pianists Mike Garson and Christian Jacob; bassists Chuck Berghofer and Michael Valerio; percussionists Luis Conte, Brad Dutz, and Aaron Serfaty (also heard on drums); and drummer Paul Kreibich.

The magnificent sound is bright and clear, thanks to engineering by Steve Genewick, Rouble Kalpoor, and Spencer Garcia; mixing by Allen Sides, and mastering by Bernie Grundman. Recorded at United Recording, Hollywood CA. Stanley, whose audiophile bona fides and perfectionism in the studio are well established, has also produced artful packaging for the album with gorgeously photographed images, yet another tribute to her inspiration, Julie London. Completing the package are wonderful liner notes by Scott Yanow, offering a historian’s perspective on the music, background on each song, and insights to how both Lyn—and Julie!—approached these tunes.

With a Valentine’s Day weekend—February 15, 2019—wide release street date, London Calling…A Toast To Julie London is a gift for lovers and lovers of great music, created the way it was in the 1960s. Keep an eye out for multiple versions of the album, including standard and super-audio CDs, along with a two-disc vinyl LP set.

“London Calling Album-In my 60 years as a programmer this is among the greatest recordings I have ever heard.”

Roy McGrath is a Chicago based tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico and educated in Boston, New Orleans and Chicago, Roy brings to bear these diverse influences in his playing and composing. In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz, funk, Latin jazz and salsa scenes. He has led international tours to Mexico, Singapore, Korea and China. As a composer and arranger, Roy is firmly in the jazz tradition, but his Latin American heritage is an ever-present mind set, leading to wholly original works that are a true expression of who he is. His plans for 2017 include recording and releasing a new album of original compositions,

Remembranzas, and leading two special big band tribute projects honoring legendary Puerto Rican composer Rafael Hernández and Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra.

Cast Your Vote in the 2019
All About Jazz Top Venues Reader’s Poll

shem.gif

All About Jazz is on a mission to identify the world’s top jazz venues and we need your help.

For nearly 25 years, curious listeners have used AAJ to discover new music, and we recently created a fun way for aficionados (like you!) to help them find the best places to hear live jazz by simply casting a vote.

Your participation takes seconds and over 1,100 people from around the world have already identified some great venues: from NYC to Akron, Ohio, to Paris and beyond.

To get started, go here and select up to five venues where you like to hear live jazz. After you vote, you can view the up-to-the-minute rankings. You can also filter results by city to view every venue that has received a vote to date. We’ll archive the results, publish an article, and distribute an award graphic to the winners at the conclusion of the poll.

VOTE TODAY

Thanks for helping us make the top venues poll the most definitive of its kind, and be on the look out for more jazz polls later this year.

Your friend in jazz,

Michael Ricci

Bill Frisell Headlines
the 8th Les Paul Festival Concert
at Ramapo College, NJ

Saturday, February 16 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

shem.gif

Guitarist Bill Frisell will headline the Les Paul Festival Concert on Saturday night, February 16, 2019 in the Sharp Theater at Ramapo College. Often hailed as one of the most distinctive and original improvising guitarists of our time, Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 35 years and 250 recordings, including 40 of his own.

“It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness.” — The New York Times

“Frisell is a revered figure among musicians — like Miles Davis and few others, his signature is built from pure sound and inflection; an anti-technique that is instantly identifiable.” — The Philadelphia Inquirer

Described as being “at the very epicenter of modern American Music” (BBC), Frisell’s recording catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.”

Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in April 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer, and National Performance Network. Currently Frisell is the Guest Curator for the Roots of Americana series at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Resident Artistic Director at San Francisco Jazz.

MGC Jazz Presents
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra in Concert:
 “Jazz Beyond Borders”
in San Francisco Feb. 13

shem.gif
PITTSBURGH January 21, 2019 – MCG Jazz is pleased to announce a special engagement featuring The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO), the 18-piece big band orchestra in-residence at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in San Francisco Feb. 13.  The performance will take place at Miner Auditorium in the world renown SFJAZZ Center at 7:30PM.

Grammy-award winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling will join the SJMO, under the direction of artistic director Charlie Young for a one-of-a-kind concert experience at San Francisco Jazz to present a collection of music ranging from historic Duke Ellington arrangements from the Smithsonian archives to contemporary arrangements of from Kurt Elling’s recent recordings. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit https://www.sfjazz.org/tickets/productions/jazz-beyond-borders-from-the-golden-gate-to-the-great-wall/

On the same day, The Museum of the African Diaspora will host a pop-up concert by the SJMO Small Group within their gallery housing the Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem exhibition, which surveys nearly a century of creative achievements by artists of African descent—tying the art on display to current interpretations of Jazz.

As part of an ongoing initiative by the orchestra to foster the next generation of jazz musicians and audiences, the SJMO musicians will meet with a group of 65 students from Roosevelt and Edna Brewer Middle Schools for an interactive workshop.

“We are thrilled to bring the SJMO to the city of San Francisco, said Young, adding “We are creating a bespoke concert and related events, tailored to the community in the Bay Area.” “Jazz bridges cultures and promotes democracy, cultural diversity and innovation and through authentic collaboration, we create something much greater than the sum of its parts.”

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from the U.S. Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz in American culture and its status as a national treasure. A cornerstone of the Smithsonian’s commitment to jazz, the SJMO, led by Conductor and Artistic Director Charlie Young, has performed for audiences across the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its concerts, by the full orchestra and smaller groups, include transcribed works, as well as new arrangements, commissioned works and programs that illuminate the contributions of small ensembles and jazz masters who contributed to the development of American jazz and defined the music’s character. More information about the SJMO is available at http://americanhistory.si.edu/smithsonian-jazz.  And more information about Kurt Elling can be found at http://kurtelling.com/.

Resonance is the recording debut as a leader of drummer Dave Rudolph, who is based in Tampa, Florida. Inspired by his close friend Jessica Hiltabidle, who passed away recently, the valuable sideman realized that he was long overdue to record his own music.

Rudolph utilizes four top local musicians for his project: tenor-saxophonist Zach Bornheimer, guitarist LaRue Nickelson, pianist Pablo Arencibia and bassist Alejandro Arenas. The quintet performs nine of the drummer’s originals with the influences of Kenny Wheeler, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, and Bill Frisell being felt in various spots.

A wide range of moods are covered during the colorful post-bop jazz set. The opening “Atonement” introduces the group’s appealing sound and has fine solos from Nickelson and Arencibia. “Those Clumsy Words” is a melodic jazz waltz that includes some creative drum breaks by Rudolph over the closing vamp. The wistful folk song “Lonely Train” is followed by “The Vine,” one of several numbers that have two musicians playing off of each other, in this case putting the focus on the leader and pianist Arecibia.

The other pieces include the Thelonious Monk-inspired swinger “Bounce,” the brooding ballad “Resonance” (which has guest singer Whitney James blending with guitarist Nickelson), the New Orleans-flavored “Night Squirrel,” the Bill Evans-inspired ballad “Whimsy,” and an improvised dialogue between the drummer and saxophonist Bornheimer, “Brushstrokes.”

Throughout Resonance, the subtle creativity and fresh material make this a memorable effort well worth discovering.
Scott Yanow

Performing Music From Their New CD
“Chicago/Buenos Aires Connections”
Classic tango and jazz are blended together by the talented flutist Carla Campopiano.

shem.gif
Chicago/Buenos Aires Connection is s delightful set of beautiful melodies and melodic improvising, performed by her trio with acoustic guitarist Angel Collacilli  and percussionist Gustavo Cortiñas Fouilloux

The Argentinian-born Carla Campopiano has been an important part of the Chicago tango scene since 2015. The flutist has also been exposed to jazz and blues, resulting in her leaving her tango performances open to the improvising and chance taking spirit of jazz. Her blending of the two rich musical heritages of Buenos Aires and Chicago results in delightful music

Chicago-Buenos Aires Connections matches Ms. Campopiano with two kindred spirits. Percussionist Gustavo Cortiñas Fouilloux  and guitarist Angel Collacilli are brilliant musicians who follow and react quickly to her flute flights.

The six songs in her collection are filled with warm and often-joyful melodies. The flutist states the themes with guitarist Collacilli  providing stimulating accompaniment and solos that will make some think of Django Reinhardt. The interplay between flute and guitar is often magical, particularly on “Don Agustin Bardi.” A tango rhythm is always felt in the music with Cortiñas Fouilloux contributing color and drive.

The selections include the infectious “Sacachispas,” “Melancolico” (which is anything but melancholy), the rhythmically complex “Don Agustin Bardi,” and Cortiñas “Balada de León.” The set concludes with a pair of Astor Piazzolla’s compositions. “Zita” has Colacilli switching to bass and Julián el “Piojo” López displaying a powerful sound of his own on guitar. The musicians stretch during the episodic work which, in addition to a haunting ballad section, generates plenty of excitement. The closer is the dramatic “Triunfal” which has a prominent role for Cortiñas Fouilloux

Born and raised in Argentina, Carla Campopiano grew up surrounded by the melodies and rhythms of candombe, chacarera, milonga and tango. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Empa Escuela De Música Popular de Avellaneda in Argentina before moving to Chicago four years ago.

Since then, she has led the Yuyo Verde Tango ensemble, been artistic director of Bajo’l Puente Productions, and performed in different settings. Years of research into the history of tango along with her enthusiastic soaking up of the jazz scene has led to her desire to blend it all together.

Carla Campopiano says of her new release, “Chicago-Buenos Aires Connections is the outcome of the coming together of these two contrasting musical worlds into a new concept, always respecting their traditions, binding them through their common elements and celebrating the differences between them.”

“Stunning Visionary Jazz” Dick Metcalf – Contemporary Fusion

“A provocative and engaging album at a time when recording original scores with a top-notch jazz orchestra is becoming increasingly rare.” Marc Meyers – Jazz Wax

“Jim McNeely is among the most celebrated big band composers of this generation…Barefoot Dances and Other Visions, is a showcase for McNeely’s work, featuring seven original compositions meant to evoke imaginary scenes sprung from the composer’s mind… it’s all but impossible to keep your limbs from shaking and your shoes from staying put.”
Brian Zimmerman – JAZZIZ

“If you have predisposed ideas of what a big band jazz ensemble should be accomplishing, I challenge you to listen to this new album and bask in completely new visions of sound.” The Vinyl Anachronist

“McNeely fortifies his position in the upper echelon of jazz arrangers in this set of new pieces for the formidable Frankfurt Radio Big Band.” Doug Ramsey – Rifftides

“With the Frankfurt Radio Big Band at his side, McNeely’s big band visions with a progressive edge are given full tilt in the right direction. A singular kind of angular, muscular jazz gets melded with a fastball down the middle, sitting down jazz gets a new high water mark here. Solidly pro stuff that’s tough to beat.” Midwest Record

Barefoot Dances and Other Visions is a seven-part suite composed in 2014 for the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Each piece expresses a different kind of fantasy. We performed it live in two concerts in Frankfurt February ’14, then recorded it in the studio in September of that year.

When I wrote this music I had been working with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band for about six years, so I knew the players quite well. The suite was written so that every one of the band’s soloists is placed in a framework that would be both familiar and challenging. Each piece features a pair of soloists, playing individually, sometimes together. Several of the pieces begin with a chamber-sized group, “in front of the curtain”. Then the curtain rises to reveal the whole band, having assumed yet another formation.

Bob’s Here imagines the return of composer/trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, who died in 2011. Black Snow conjures up the vision of a normally tranquil scene, still tranquil but rendered improbably dark. Barefoot Dances are just that, something I’ve never actually done in my life. A Glimmer of Hope tries its best to be optimistic, a difficult task these days. Redman Rides Again imagines the return of the arranger/reedman Don Redman. Among other things he was known for writing fantastic clarinet trios. This piece features a real clarinet trio, and a second “trio” formed by Oliver Leicht and his harmonized clarinet. Falling Upwards: try as I may, I still find it impossible. The Cosmic Hodge-Podge offers a vision of the cosmos where galaxies are replaced by blocks of sound; super novas become solo explosions; and a single black hole emerges at the end, emitting just a smidgen of light.     Jim McNeely

Growing up as a Nuyorican kid in the Bronx, Bobby Sanabria first watched “West Side Story” in the movie theaters, on the 10th anniversary of the film’s release. “I was mesmerized,” said the Latin Jazz drummer and composer. Last year, “West Side Story” celebrated its 60th anniversary and to honor this milestone, Sanabria re-envisioned what Latino New York City actually sounds like. The result was his album, “West Side Story Reimagined.” Maria Hinojosa talks to the drummer and composer about what the iconic musical means to him and how he paid tribute to its legacy. A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb from Storyville Records

A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb from Storyville Records<!–A Jazzy Christmas with Kristin Korb<!–

Kristin Korb
That Time Of Year

Known for her exuberant spirit and contagious optimism, it is only fitting that bassist and vocalist Kristin Korb has recorded a Christmas project to celebrate her 10th CD and first with Storyville Records.

“I wanted to assemble a program that creates a feeling of “hygge” and joy without being overly sweet or boring. I carefully selected songs from my childhood, songs reflecting long-standing friendships, and songs that are just fun and wintery. This is a soundtrack for tree trimming, lighting candles, and hanging out with those you love.”

On board for this project are Korb’s long-standing trio mates Magnus Hjorth, piano, and Snorre Kirk, drums. As a holiday bonus, the trio is joined by Mathias Heise on harmonica. The sound of Heise’s harmonica fits the voice beautifully and adds and extra sparkle to the entire project.
In contrast to Korb’s recent projects, she has included two instrumentals to feature Mathias on the harmonica and the band as a whole. On “We Three Kings”, the bass, harmonica, and piano all take turns at the melody on the journey. “Angels We Have Heard on High” gets a Brazilian makeover, full of festive energy.

Korb captures that feeling of “hygge” with enough playful twists to freshen up last year’s playlist. That Time of Year will be a welcome addition to your treasured holiday collection.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The World Vibes Congress is a gathering of professional players, college percussion teachers, and students whose mission is to promote the vibraphone through improvisation and composition, encouraging students to play and working with teachers to develop curriculum for the instrument. For the last six years, they have met annually in New Jersey each January.

In cooperation with the World Vibes Congress, in January, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina will host four of the best vibraphone players in the profession today. Tony Miceli, Joe Locke, David Friedman and Warren Wolf will perform on Sunday, January 6 at 2pm on the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina’s mainstage.

As part of the Jazz Vibes Showcase on Sunday, January 6, the four will play individually with a rhythm section of professional musicians including Martin Lesch on piano, Chris Russell on drums, both local Island jazz celebrities, and Ron Brendle on bass, hailing from NC.

For the finale, these four incredible vibraphonists will perform together in a dynamic musical extravaganza. The mainstage performance is dedicated to the memory of Lowcountry jazz legend and owner of The Jazz Club, Bob Masteller. The event is co-sponsored by the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and Junior Jazz Foundation.

As part of the Jazz Vibes Showcase, each of the four vibraphonists plus West Coast vibes player Anthony Smith will present a 5-session Workshop Experience on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 10am-4pm.

The two sessions before lunch are Tony Miceli’s workshop “How to Study and Work with Chords and Harmony,” and Joe Locke’s session “Inspiration and Transformation – Creating New Lines for Improvisation.”

Clarinetist Rick Bogart 2018-19 SEMI-FINALIST for The American Prize

The American Prize is delighted to announce SEMI-FINALIST instrumental soloists for 2018-19

Clarinetist Rick Bogart

shem.gif

Bogart received his formal classical training at Philadelphia’s prestigious Curtis Institute of Music and North Texas State University. At age twelve Rick began his first formal lessons with a retired Big Band musician, Mr. Reader. Gumming the tenor sax that had been his mainstay throughout the Big Band days, Mr. Reader gave Rick a lesson in the blues ”before anything else”.

The Real Training

”Yes, I learned theory, harmony, composition, and all the rest,” he says. But my real training was at the traditional but unofficial New Orleans School of Music. In Bogart’s relentless quest to bring the clarinet back to the fore as a lead instrument, he has also been enamored with musician who can sing.

”As they say in New Orleans, ‘lf you can sing, sing’” So Bogart sings. As a musician-singer there is always that element of swing. ”I liked the way Thomas Jefferson sang – I could not get enough of it. I was so happy to play in his band and work with him night after night.”

Bogart’s selection of tunes are from what NEWSWEEK not long ago referred to as the ”classical music of the 20th century’.” Among them are ”My Blue Heaven” ”Don’t be that Way” ”Begin The Begiune” .’On The Sunny Side Of The Street” ”If I Could Be With You” ”Exactly Like You, and ”Lady Be Good”. He is certainly appreciative of other styles, such as be-bop and avant-garde players.”The great players of the past inspired me by keeping the melody in mind. The big tone concept of sound. They had respect for the melody. They always tried to state the melody repeatedly so people would know.”

Bogart regrets the decline in popularity of the clarinet and is on a mission to bring it back to center stage as a lead instrument. Bogart believes the clarinet declined for three reasons:

First, the clarinet is a difficult instrument to play; it was easier to get those warmer, richer solos on the tenor saxophone.

Second, there was a certain reaction to the great clarinet band leaders of the 1930’s and 40’s, so that the new players shied away from the instrument and wanted to play something different.

Thirdly, in the United States after the Big Band era, instrument makers made the clarinet primarily for school, their biggest customers. Children couldn’t handle the wide bore, couldn’t fill it with air. Thus the manufacturers narrowed the bore, altering the sound. Many of those playing professionally, including Bogart, have their clarinets ”customized” to get the sound they want  – similar to Boosey and Hawkes 10-10, the great English clarinet.

Recently Rick has given concerts at the University of Donetsk, Ukraine and the Kiev Opera House, Ukraine sponsored by the AMS Corp. Additionally he has performed at a concert at the United Nations, NY and a question & answer session with the U.N. Society Jazz Band.

There’s every reason to hope that Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” will improve upon the 1961 film, but I doubt if we’ll ever hear a more thrilling interpretation of that immortal score  than that of the Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band.

Susie Blue And The Lonesome Fellas
Release A New Single
“Happy New Year Baby”
Just In Time For New Years Eve

shem.gif
This flirtatious classic is a Blues/Jazzy take on a Pop song from the late 1950’s featuring  a lush and swinging vocal by Solitaire Miles, and lively solos by guitarist Neal Alger and saxophonist Eric Schneider.

Miles and Alger are renown for unearthing long-lost songs, rescuing and refining bygone gems from songwriters like Cindy Walker or Hoagy Carmichael.  This forgotten nugget was written by Neil Sedaka and originally released in 1958 by Popcorn vocalist JoAnn Campbell.    Alger updates the song for 2018 with a new arrangement,  blending Miles’ smooth Patsy Cline-style vocals with a Blues rhythm which puts the tune somewhere in between Jazz and Rockabilly.   It’s a delightful ballad crossing over many genres – great for anybody who wants a lavish, flirty and fun way to ring in the New Year.  – JM Reid, Chicago Music Guide

The band has released another single this past month, a Xmas favorite “Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me”.  You can download the tunes at at CD Baby, itunes, Amazon or at their Bandcamp Page.

You can find them on the web at www.susiebluelonesomefellas.com

Jim McNeely

Rising Malian singer and songwriter Fatoumata Diawara has been nominated for two Grammy™ Awards. Her critically acclaimed Fenfo in the Best World Music category and for her collaboration with UK based electronic music duo Disclosure on the song “Ultimatum” in the Best Dance Recording category.

The 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards®. Music’s Biggest Night® returns to Los Angeles’ STAPLES Center on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, and will broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Nominations for the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards will be announced in all 84 categories on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, and will honor the best in recordings released between Oct. 1, 2017, and Sept. 30, 2018.

Fatoumata has performed with some of the biggest names in contemporary music, including Bobby Womack, Herbie Hancock, Roberto Fonseca, Amadou & Mariam, Oumou Sangaré, Toumani Diabaté, Flea, David Crosby, Snarky Puppy and many more. From an appearance January 2018 at Carnegie Hall, Rolling Stone noted that “the singer and guitarist, originally from Mali, provided two of the night’s most striking moments. Her ode to the power of women, ‘Mousso,’ sung in her native language, was hypnotic, and her captivating stage spins enhanced her anthemic ‘Unite.’”

Diawara broke out in 2011 with her debut album, Fatou, which featured guest performances from legendary musicians John Paul Jones, Tony Allen and Toumani Diabaté. The record was hailed by Pitchfork as a “beguiling album” that “simply surrounds you with its atmosphere,” while The Guardian praised it as “an enjoyable, impressive set.”

THE EBONY HILLBILLIES –
THE PREMIER AFRICAN-AMERICAN STRING BAND IN AMERICA!

From the street corners of Manhattan to the hallowed stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to TV appearances on the BBC and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” The Ebony Hillbillies are a true phenomenon, reviving the lost art form and American legacy of string band music for a whole new generation.

Continuing to bring a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st Century world in need of some deep musical education, the dynamic ensemble – led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) with Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals), Gloria Thomas Gassaway (on vocals and bones), acoustic bassist William “Salty Bill” Salter (3x-Grammy winning co-writer of legendary pop hits like “Where is the Love” and “Just The Two of Us”), Allanah Salter (shaker, vocals), Newman Taylor Baker/Ricky “Dirty Red” Gordon (washboard percussion) and A.R. on “cowboy” percussion kit – are releasing their latest full length album, 5 MILES FROM TOWN [EH MUSIC].

Infused with the Hillbillies’ trademark mix of pop, country, bluegrass, folk and jazz, the full length collection reflects a soulful, gritty and alternately funky, romantic and socially conscious place where toes are always tapping, percussion is slapping, fiddles are jamming, front porch chairs are rocking, banjos are plucking and voices are raised in determination and triumph.

Mixing lively instrumentals and vocals over the course of 11 tracks and 3 alternately playful and hard-hitting snippets/skits, the group performs everything from a down home fiddle jam (“Hog”), the gentle romantic cautionary tale “Fork in the Road” and an intimate cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” to the incisive social commentaries “Another Man Done Gone (Hands Up Don’t Shoot)” (about black men and police shootings) and “I’m on My Way To Brooklyn,” which rolls as a lighthearted NYC inspired spiritual until the end…and three gunshots.

The Ebony Hillbillies started out on the streets of Manhattan, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC, Good Morning America, NBC, CBS, etc., international music workshops and festivals, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum), Guest school programs, Foot stomping and Hand-clapping Dance parties and more. In the digital era, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their four CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday, I Thought You Knew, Barefoot and Flying and 2015’s Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! – at their shows and via their globally popular website, https://www.theebonyhillbillies.com/home
