They perform at concert series, colleges, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. FIELD THEORY

Matt Panayides-guitar, composition
Matt Vashlishan-EWI
Robert Sabin-Double Bass
Mark Ferber-drums

Drawing on the relationships between points in space and their quantum persistence, “Field

Theory” presents an electrified area of sound, or a “sonic-sphere.” The brainchild of composer and guitarist Matt Panayides in collaboration with the virtuoso EWI and saxophonist Matt Vashlishan, in this music the band explores the sonic texture of space in time mapping it onto the present moment. Joined by Mark Ferber on drums and Robert Sabin on double bass, the group will be performing new music.

Matt Panayides is a modern guitarist and composer. His compelling melodies, compositions and improvisations remain in the listener’s mind long after the gig, employing modern harmonies, free and structured improvisations, mixed-meter rhythms and straight-ahead swing. Matt has released two albums featuring his original compositions for quartet, Conduits (2015) and Tapestries of Song (2011). Matt has been performing as a leader in the NYC area and abroad for the past 15 years.

This may sound like a left-field introduction to this exceptional album by Glenn Crytzer, but bear with me: have you ever heard any of the classic big bands of the 1930s as recorded by the Associated transcription service? (Technically, the company was known as “Associated Music Publishers” and in 1936, their office was located at 25 West 46th St, Manhattan.)  The recordings made by Associated sound very different from the standard 78 RPM singles that were commercially released by the various labels, major and minor, and they also sound very different from the other transcription services at the time, like Thesaurus, Standard, or MacGregor. The Associated recordings all sound like they were made in a huge studio space, with lots of reverb, and plenty of sonic space around the instruments; they’re incredibly “live,” as an engineer might say.  When you listen to the Associated recordings of, say, the John Kirby Sextet, Teddy Wilson, the Ray Noble Orchestra, or that rather amazing 1934 Joe Venuti big band date (with Louis Prima and Red Norvo), just to name a couple, there’s a very specific kind of a disconnect happening. You don’t quite feel like you’re listening to historical recordings from 80 years ago, but you know they’re not newly-recorded either. They seem to exist in a unique space all their own, one that’s completely timeless.

That’s the same way that this album landed upon my ears: it doesn’t quite feel like any kind of a recreation, rather it seems like some contemporary scientist who specializes in both sound recording and astrophysics found a way to send a microphone drone into the past and make new recordings of historical big bands.  I had a similar sensation when I watched the 2013 re-release of The Wizard of Oz, in which the classic 1939 film was re-jigged somehow for two 21st century movie technologies, digital 3D and IMAX.  (I’ve also heard the original soundtrack adapted for 5.1 surround sound on DVD.) The 3D IMAX Oz was fascinating and highly illuminating.  Naturally, going forward, I would still want to re-watch The Wizard of Oz in the original 1939 format again – this might have been just a one-off experience – but that it gave me a whole new way to look at a classic.  And that’s what this album does, it allows us hear vintage big band swing in a whole other way, auditorily speaking, and takes classic music and makes us hear it in the audio equivalent of 3D IMAX – it’s a quite a wonderful, unique sensation.

The combination of the familiar and the unfamiliar is consistently startling, to the point where we can say that the music is being re-imagined rather than re-created.  I keep feeling like some collector friend of mine stumbled across a set of previously undocumented Associated transcriptions recorded in the immediate pre-war period. In some cases, where the tune is very familiar, I feel like these are newly-discovered versions by alternate bands, like “Jive at Five” being played by Charlie Barnet rather than Count Basie, say, or Alvino Rey playing the central guitar part on “Solo Flight” with own his orchestra back around the same time that Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman introduced it.  And this “Well Git It” makes me wonder what that classic flag waver might have sounded like if it came from the band book of Jimmy Dorsey rather than Tommy. Other tracks make me feel like I’m discovering some previously unknown local local or territory band that never made it into the history books or the discographies.

Some of Glenn’s arrangements truly sound like a wrinkle in time: the North American popular song “I Get Ideas” originated in 1927 as an authentic and famous Argentine tango titled “Adios Muchachos.”  In 1951, it was adapted into “I Get Ideas” (with most of the tango rhythm extracted), wherein it became a hit for both Tony Martin and Louis Armstrong. Glenn’s treatment sounds like if some early swing bandleader – say, Alex Hill, or maybe the Mills Blue Rhythm Band – somehow got a hold of the 1951 lyrics (by Dorcas Cochrane of “Again” fame), even though they weren’t written for many years.  There’s more than a hint of Louis Armstrong in Jason Prover’s trumpet solo at the heart of it, but more like Armstrong’s 1930s big band, the one led for him by Luis Russell, rather than the groups he recorded with in the 1950s, and Crytzer’s vocal here is clearly part and parcel of the 1930s idiom.

And I find myself surprisingly impressed by Glenn’s originals; normally I try to encourage contemporary musicians and singers to avoid the temptation of writing their own original songs if only because the overwhelming majority of them are lousy at it.  (Make that extremely lousy at it!) But Glenn has succeeded in his highly commendable goal of creating new songs that sound like they were written in the late 1930s and recorded by bands of the period (if only on Associated Transcriptions). “Just Like a Broken Record,” for instance, really sounds like something that Larry Clinton would have played in a 1938 Vitaphone short – or on a 1938 buff Bluebird.  (So does “Marche Slav”; I had a hard time believing that was a new arrangement of the iconic 1876 Tchaikovsky piece, not a transcription of Clinton or Les Brown’s Blue Devils or some other historic band that specialized in “swinging the classics.”)

There are also plenty of surprises in the vocal department: Hannah Gill is a name new me, but a formidable singer who sounds so authentic to the period that I don’t think she would even mind if I referred to her as a “band canary.” (That term has somehow become un-PC in the millennial era, go figure.)  I know Dandy Wellington, as does anyone who has attended any kind of swing-centric event in New York, but mainly as a dancer and an emcee for contemporary retro-burlesque events – in fact, so much so whenever I hear his name and his voice, I expect to see a woman start taking off her clothes. Clearly he’s developed into the most perfectly appropriate male singer for this band on both ballads and novelties (especially “Swing My Soul”).  And Glenn also captures the idiom very well, adding vocalist to the list of many hats (and caps) that he wears, along with bandleader, arranger, conductor, composer, lyricist, and guitarist.

I’ve possibly made too much of a fuss over the way this music plays with notions of chronological time and not enough about how the music is about time in the sense that it really swings – that Glenn and his bandsmen play with a lift, a drive and a danceable imperative that’s all too rare in the 21st century.  Glenn Crytzer has, in fact, achieved something of a temporal miracle, in assembling 17 musicians and singers who have so perfectly absorbed the classic swing idiom that it’s like a language they can speak without any trace of a foreign accent. Astrophysicists may insist that time travel is impossible, but now I have cause to wonder.

      Critical Acclaim:

      SOLO:

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
              Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
              George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
              Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
             Munchner Merkur (Munich)

TRIO (reviews of latest CD with Buster Williams & Matt Wilson):

“There is almost no one musician playing today who can deconstruct a standard and then put it back together again like Denny Zeitlin. On his breathtaking album, Stairway to the Stars he does just that… Mr. Zeitlin literally owns the piano and commands it to do his bidding when he sits down to play… He is almost without parallel in jazz and the equal of any musician in the classical realm as well… The recording is worthy of being judged to be a masterpiece… His pianism is echoed by the brilliance, of course, of bassist Buster Williams and the percussion colouring of drummer Matt Wilson… “
            Raul da Gama, Jazzdagama

“5 Stars [highest rating]… A studio release of this magnitude would be a great album. Stairway To The Stars as a live release is catching lightning in a bottle!”
            Brent Black, Criticaljazz

“… like all of Denny’s albums, it’s an adventure… Denny turns standards inside out without abandoning their spirit. Songs start with a familiar reference point, with Denny then layering the melody with gorgeous chord changes. Then he takes us off on an improvisational voyage deep inside the song, giving you insight into what makes it special and what holds it together… let go and feel the tidal pull of his approach and enjoy his scuba exploration of music, where the notes dart around like tropical fish. This album is worthwhile for Oleo alone. Trust me, no matter how well you know Sonny Rollins’s standard, you don’t know it like this.”
            Marc Myers, Jazzwax

“… These three are formidable together… What sets the Zeitlin-Williams-Wilson trio apart is its openness and ardor: They approach this material as if it’s never been played before, deconstructing the melodies and rebuilding them in their own image. Zeitlin, who had already been playing professionally for three-and-a half decades at this point, favors a sensitive, inquisitive touch on ballads with which Williams and Wilson naturally empathize. They’re clearly in love with each other’s playing.”
            Jeff Tamarkin, JazzTimes

“… The evening’s set is mostly ballads, except for a crisply bopping take of Oleo that takes you for a white knuckler of a ride … This disc is one for the ages.”
            George Harris, Jazzweekly

“… [the trio displays] a spirit of fun, adventure and devil-may-care panache. ..Few pianists working today have his command of harmonic depth, his “just right” and sometimes daring touch with a melody… always supple touch and endless inventiveness… A beautiful set … .”
            Dan McClenaghan, Allaboutjazz

Jazz fans know they can count on the Highlights In Jazz concert series to showcase the gifted players who shaped jazz history and continue to contribute to its long and rich legacy. This third concert of the 46th season is no exception: The music is sure to dazzle – and swing – when you have such renowned musicians on hand as pianist Dick Hyman, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, bassist Jay Leonhart, saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski, and drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd.

Listeners will benefit from this stellar aggregation’s more than 200 years of combined jazz experience when these players hit the stage.

At 91, pianist Dick Hyman, is a mainstay of the series and a 2017 NEA Jazz Master. In the mid-1940s, Dick won a dozen piano lessons with the great Teddy Wilson in an on-air radio competition; by 1950, he was touring Europe with Benny Goodman’s orchestra. Since then, he’s repeatedly demonstrated his versatility, mastering multiple facets of jazz. Dick has also written film scores and orchestral compositions, made countless concert appearances and released well over 100 albums as a leader. He landed seven Most Valuable Player awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his studio work, plus two Emmys for his TV work. Dick was also among the first musicians to record with a Moog synthesizer.

Among the illustrious friends joining Dick Hyman on the BMCC stage during this special event:

Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon first landed on jazz listeners’ radar in 1989 as part of Wynton Marsalis’ Septet; he was an original member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, starting in 1995 . Wycliffe has performed with David Sanborn, Rene Marie, Dianne Reeves, Anat Cohen, Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Joe Henderson, and Eric Reed, to name just a few. The trombonist has released close to three dozen CDs as a leader or co-leader, and is a perennial winner of “best trombonist” honors  from numerous publications and professional organizations.

Bassist Jay Leonhart was dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman, who described him as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich, Roy Eldridge, and other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called, “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of audiences.

Saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski had his first pro gig while still in elementary school, playing in a Polish polka band in his native Cleveland. From that moment, he knew a life in music was his destiny. Ken studied with Sonny Stitt, and played with classic bands like the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and with Benny Goodman. He’s also collaborated with Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing,   Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell,  James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, and Bill Charlap. Ken has released several albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings as a sideman.

Drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd is a veteran musical road warrior, with more than two dozen European tours under his belt with the likes of Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Terry Gibbs, Conte Candoli, and others. Chuck has appeared with Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, Tommy Flanagan, Ray Brown, and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The drummer/vibraphonist has released several albums under his own name, and appeared on scores of others with Nicki Parrott, Harry Allen, Houston Person, John di Martino, Ray Drummond, and others.

The special guest—a trademark of this long-running concert series—is a well-kept secret until curtain time. A spectrum of jazz greats have filled the role, from the venerable Eubie Blake to the 15-year-old John Pizzarelli—the celebrated guitarist’s first Highlights In Jazz appearance. Sometimes there are even extra-special guests: Producer Jack Kleinsinger met Ray Nance for the first time when the trumpeter came backstage to say hi at one of the concerts in the series. Though Ray didn’t have his ax with him, Jack persuaded him to take to the stage to sing and dance with the featured band.

Kleinsinger is a hands-on producer, which makes the Highlights In Jazz series unique. You’ll see Jack on stage, introducing the musicians and sharing his vast knowledge of jazz history. He also structures the shows, laying out a format, specifying types of tunes—perhaps a ballad, followed by something up-tempo–but leaving the specific song choices to the players. “That way, there’s not eight guys standing around on stage wondering, ‘What are we going to do now?’ Sometimes I’m surprised by what they choose, but I trust the musicians, they’re all veterans,” Jack notes. His active role inspires him to continue producing the series. “I wouldn’t want to just book acts for 40-some years. Producing like this is fun for me.”

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

You won’t want to miss a single concert of the 2018 season of Highlights In Jazz!

What people are saying about Jazz Superheroes:

Phil Schaap: “Informed and heartfelt!”  Curator: JALC

Gary Giddins, major award-winning jazz author of Satchmo: the Genius of Louis Armstrong writes…”Eve Zanni has worked out the details of this project with her heart, brains, and a profound knowledge of jazz and its makers. Her book treats jazz in an accessible manner that is at once witty, smart, original, and great fun. Quite unlike anything I’ve seen, her inventive approach to music and history clears away the pedagogical cobwebs and will rouse the curiosity and enthusiasm of young readers and their teachers.”

Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian and author of 11 books : “Eve Zanni’s Jazz Superheroes would make a great addition to any music or jazz appreciation class. Through its colorful stories, it serves as an excellent introduction to youngsters about the world of jazz.”-

Henry Ferrini, Filmmaker “Why isn’t jazz appreciation taught in elementary schools?  Because they don’t have this book.  Now there IS a jazz curriculum for kids that allow them access into America’s only original art form.  I wish these wonderful materials were available when I was in school.”

Marion Nesbit, Ph.D., Professor Lesley University “From jazz superhero stories to ‘riff banks’, Ms.Zanni’s vibrant curriculum is expertly developed, thorough and easy to use.  It is sure to capture students’ interest and inspire their appreciation for jazz.”

Dominique Eade, acclaimed jazz vocalist, composer, faculty New England Conservatory “Ms.Zanni’s guide offers teaching that comes from a vast historic knowledge of the music of the African diaspora through academic research and personal experience as a practicing musician…she has developed a curriculum that is multilayered, teaching children about important musical ideas through inspiring personal stories…the theme of individual dedication and conviction runs through the lives of each ‘super hero’…”

Professor Mili-Bermejo Greenspan, Berkely College of Music;  “…what Ms. Zanni has accomplished goes beyond a regular music guide, it enters the realm of contextual teaching, including history, culture, socio-political aspects, and most important: what moves artists to create, the story of their struggles to make a living and express themselves, the story of Survival, and the Power of music. “

EVE ZANNI – Author, Singer, composer

“Emma plays brilliantly, brightly and strongly, and her compositions are so strong that myself as well as others were for no particular reason near tears. The songs lie somewhere between mysticism and powerful visceral emotion. The lyrics are, let us say, very convincingly cosmic.” – John Clare, Jazz Australia

Emma Grace Stephenson is an Australian pianist and songwriter. After performing her own compositions at the Sydney Opera House with Hieronymus Trio and the acclaimed Australian vocalist Kristin Berardi, Emma won the 2017 Freedman Jazz Fellowship for Australian jazz musicians under the age of 35. For their debut trio performance at the Shapeshifter Lab,  Orlando Le Fleming (bass), Oli Nelson (drums) and Emma (piano) will be joined by a special guest vocalist. The band will perform Emma’s original music, which combines rhythmic, harmonic, and improvisatory elements of modern jazz with flavours of folk-pop songwriting.

The 3-time GRAMMY® nominated drummer Duduka Da Fonseca will be releasing what he considers to be one of the most expressive works of his career playing the compositions of the legendary pianist Dom Salvador with his Brazilian based Trio, featuring pianist David Feldman and bassist Guto Wirtti.

      Coming Out On April 13th

      shem.gif
“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awarness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.”
      Todd Jenkins, Down Beat

“Da Fonseca embodies the pulse of a Brazilian Samba School with a full-set reverie, a percussive wall of sound that seems to come at you from all angles”
      Ken Micallef, Modern Drummer Magazine

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays  with uncommon mix of finesse and drive.”
      Mark Holston, Jazziz

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
      THE NEW YORKER

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
      With music in mind,
      Sincerely,”

      Billy Hart
The merging of Brazilian music and American jazz changed the trajectory of modern music. The inceptions of bossa nova, samba jazz, and other fusions enable Brazil to make its mark on jazz and beyond, via some incredible musicians and composers, including the legendary Dom Salvador. The remarkable pianist and his classic trios, which blended samba and jazz, made an impression on many during the mid-1960s, including a young Duduka Da Fonseca.

Fonseca’s initial exposure to Salvador’s music came as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro. The budding drummer could hear Salvador’s original trio rehearsing, featuring bassist Sergio Barrozo and drummer Edison Machado, while walking to school. When the group released their seminal recording, Rio 65 Trio, Fonseca was completely spellbound by the music and practiced along to the record religiously, forever engraining Salvador’s music into his psyche.

Though he had met Salvador briefly in Rio, Fonseca didn’t have a chance to play regularly with his idol until 1980. Having been in New York City for five years, Fonseca had played with a who’s who of modern jazz legends, so when Salvador’s drummer wasn’t available, the pianist called Fonseca to fill in. Fonseca surprised Salvador by knowing Salvador’s repertoire backwards and forwards, thus cementing a bond that led to years of playing and touring together.

Salvador and Fonseca played regularly during the 1980s in a quartet that also featured saxophonist Dick Oatts and bassist Dennis Irwin. Their collaborations have continued to this day. In 2015, Fonseca’s relationship with Salvador came full circle when he was asked to play Machado’s parts on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rio 65 Trio recording at Carnegie Hall.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador was born from the leader’s love of Salvador and his music and Fonseca’s effort to make a proper tribute to his friend and mentor. The featured trio was born of a 2000 meeting with pianist David Feldman, who was studying then at the New School in New York, and with whom Fonseca recorded with later in 2009 in Brazil, where he also met the trio’s bassist, Guto Wirtti.

In the efforts to make the best recording and present Salvador’s music in the best light, Fonseca reached out to Salvador for lead sheets for his compositions. Feldman also took time to consult Salvador and learn the repertoire from its source, removing any doubts about structural and interpretive nuances. Many of Salvador’s songs seem simple but have difficult elements, most notably in the rhythmic combinations.

Fonseca traveled to Brazil three times: the first to rehearse the music, the second to record over two days, and the third to mix and master. The trio aimed to make the recording as natural as possible, eventually using many first or second takes.

The recording begins with a tune from that inspiring Rio 65 Trio album, “Farjuto,” a breezy composition whose title comes from dated Rio musician slang. ironically meaning “not so good.” The modal of groove of “Transition” is augmented by a variety of rhythms emanating from the Northeastern provinces of Brazil. The haunting “María” is a minimalistic ballad named for Salvador’s wife of 50 years, which the trio molded in the spirit of Keith Jarrett’s memorable take of “It’s Easy To Remember.” The ensemble performs “Antes Da Chuva” in a looser fashion than the Salvador original, while the straight samba of “Samba Do Malandrinho” is bouncy and smart, apropos to its rascally namesake. The sly “Temátrio” is a grooving composition that emerged from Salvador’s second trio around 1966.

The title of “Gafieira” refers to an old Rio tradition of a ballroom dance incorporating some acrobatic elements, the difficult composition prancing along in a brilliant display of melodic and rhythmic complexity. Salvador’s beautiful ballad “Para Elis” is a dedication to the pianist’s former employer, the iconic singer Elis Regina, and finds the trio augmented by the great cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Performed and recorded as a samba, “Valsa De Esquina” was originally composed as a Brazilian waltz by Salvador, so the trio transformed it into a Bill Evans-esque jazz waltz. The upbeat “Clauditi” is a tribute to a great friend and collaborator, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and features rhythmic elements of samba and the pre-samba maxixe. Perhaps Salvador’s most famous composition, “Meu Fraco é Café Forte” (or “My Weakness Is Strong Coffee”) utilizes an intriguing arrangement by Wirtti that introduces the melody in half time before speeding it up.

Duduka Da Fonseca and his wonderful trio of David Feldman and Guto Wirtti pay tribute to Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador on the enchanting Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador by highlighting the composer’s brilliant music but also giving it new life with new contemporary arrangements.

Abby London-Crawford, In Association with the Sanctuary Arts Initiative of Metro Baptist Church, proudly presents The Corina Bartra SeptetSaturday, May 19, 2018 in the sanctuary of Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenue, at 7:30 PM, located in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen, behind The Port Authority.

Ms. London-Crawford will offer this special concert from Peruvian Jazz vocalist and composer, Corina Bartra, and her group. Many of the personnel of the Septet have been in several of Bartra’s musical configurations, and on a variety of her concerts: at the Acoustic Grammy Sessions NYC in 2015, recently at the Kennedy Center in D.C., and on her latest celebrated CD, Takunde. Ms. Bartra’s last concert in NYC at the Latea Theater on January 12th of this year was with her Afro Peruvian New Trends Orchestra.

As Raul Da Gama wrote last November 2017, when reviewing the CD Takunde, after its release on Blue Spiral Music:

“It is impossible to over-estimate the importance of the great Peruvian musician and vocalist, Corina Bartra …The music of Corina Bartra is quite unique, especially when she is performing Afro-Peruvian repertoire as she does on Takunde…The album comes thirty-one years after Miss Bartra announced her arrival with her very jazzy Afro-Peruvian album Yamambo … Today Corina Bartra’s music probably sounds more deeply Afro-Peruvian than ever and Takunde explores more of South America visiting the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Brasil, even as it traverses the landscape of Jazz and a world after Tin Pan Alley…Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Takunde is the original work by Corina Bartra and it is music such as “Marinera Jazz” that adds much to Afro-Peruvian musical literature.”

An Amazon reviewer, Grady Harp, giving Takunde 5 stars, pointed out more of Bartra’s distinctive accomplishments when he wrote that Bartra “also pioneered subtle and exciting instrumental textures in her compositions and her arrangements. She writes extensive intros, interludes, and solos filled with inventive rhythms and beautiful harmonies. She also guides her musicians to do so. With this approach, she adds an instrumental section to her unique & historic projects.”

Some members of the ensemble on Takunde: Steve Sandberg, piano; Victor Murillo, bass; and Perico Diaz, cajón, will also be joining Bartra for the May 19th concert, with Dave Morgan, sax; Diego Lopez, drums; and Tony Romano, on guitar.

      About the Artists:

Saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Dave Morgan, is a versatile composer/arranger, as well as co-leader of Funk Shui, an all horns fusion project of Jazz and Funk that he has presented many times at The Bitter End. A player who is a remarkable, flexible “stylistic hybrid,” he has performed on many Broadway shows, as well as playing clarinet and editing Ornette Coleman’s Harmolodic Ensemble. Morgan played at the Latea Theater in January with Corina Bartra’s instrumental project: Afro Peruvian New Trends Orchestra

VICTOR Murillo, bassistoriginally from Mexico, plays a lot in California, and has been on several Corina Bartra projects, festivals and concerts, and on the CD, Takunde. Murillo also has his own project: Jazz & Tradiciones, of Mexican infused jazz.

Steve Sandberg, pianist, composer, is the leader of The Steve Sandberg Quartet, (featuring Zach Brock from Snarky Puppy), and has been nominated for three Emmy’s for his scoring and songs for “Dora the Explorer” and “Go, Diego, Go!” He has played with David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, Ruben Blades, and his Latin jazz mentor, Mario Rivera.

Diego Lopez is a New York based drummer. He worked for many years, with Gato Barbieri, Dave Samuels, Diane Schurr, and The Latin Jazz All Stars among many others.

Perico Diaz is a Cajon player based in NYC, originally from Peru. He has played on almost all the CDs of Corina Bartra, including her instrumental project, The Afro Peruvian New Trends Orchestra. He credits Bartra for introducing him to Jazz. He is able to communicate musically with great passion and rhythmic precision. Reviewer, Raul Da Gama stated Diaz added “a beautiful radiance…” to the album Takunde.

Tony Romano is a NYC based guitarist with great flexibility and virtuosity. He has been a visible part of the New York City music scene for over twenty years. Just Jazz Guitar magazine wrote, “His tone is beautiful and soulful, and his remarkable technique is a servant to his rich musical imagination and broad harmonic palette.”  With a wide range of playing styles, Tony has toured worldwide and performed and recorded with many notable Jazz, Latin, Pop, and Broadway artists, including Michael Feinstein, Randy Brecker, Dave Valentin, Thomas Chapin, Santi DeBriano, and Stanley Jordan, to name just a few.

      shem.gif
Virtuoso guitarist Vinny Raniolo has built a widespread global fan base, thanks to his engaging approach to early jazz, his regular appearances on PBS specials, and his collaborations with six-string giants including Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Tommy Emmanuel.

Vinny’s love of flying is just about on par with his devotion to music, and with the release of his brand-new CD, Air Guitar, the 6-string wizard and pilot has found a way to connect his two passions.

Air Guitar, Raniolo’s much-anticipated debut recording as a leader, features a cache of 15 classic tunes related to flying and the wild blue yonder, by composers ranging from Benny Goodman to John Denver. The selections travel from the birth of aviation (the 1910 rarity “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine”), through gypsy jazz (into the clouds with Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages”) to the easy swing of Jimmy Van Heusen (“Come Fly With Me”). Raniolo also delves into the Great American Songbook with classic tunes by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and more.

Though Air Guitar is Vinny’s first album as a leader, he’s far from a newcomer to jazz. The Nassau County guitarist got interested in jazz at age 16 after a teacher introduced him to to records by masters of jazz guitar such as Joe Pass, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Herb Ellis and others. Vinny fell in love with the music immediately and realized, “That’s what I want to do.” He began gigging as a teen, and his career really took off when he paired up with fellow guitarist Frank Vignola at age 22.

Since then, Vinny Raniolo has garnered widespread attention and praise from critics and fans alike for his playing with Four Generations of Guitar, Rhythm Future Quartet and other ensembles. He maintains a busy international touring schedule, and appears on numerous albums, including duos with Vignola, and as a sideman and a sought-out accompanist for singers. Vinny is also recognized as an educator and is the author of several instruction books.

As for his other obsession, Vinny grew up around pilots, flight instructors and planes, but the flying bug didn’t bite till recently. He was hooked from his first lesson, about three years ago; now the brilliant guitarist is also an instrument-rated pilot, currently working toward obtaining a commercial license.

The flying guitarist’s passions are more closely connected than they might seem. “My background in music definitely helps with my overall understanding. It’s learning another language, and there are a lot of crossover skills such as coordination and math,” Vinny points out. “ I think that in life we are always playing jazz: You are alert to the environment around you and quickly improvise based on your knowledge of the situation. Just like music, aviation is a lifelong study and takes a lot of dedication.”

The choice of concert venue is as special and as personal as the music: Audience members will have a chance to view a full exhibition of aviation history during a pre-concert cocktail hour, with hors d’œuvres, plus a cash bar.

Bassist Elias Bailey, an in-demand player who has performed and studied with many of the top names in jazz, joins Vinny on Air Guitar, and onstage at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum concert, as they celebrate the release of the new CD.

This special event takes place at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, April 27, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Captured on film, the buildings’ elders share memories of their famous neighbors, including W.E.B. Du Bois, Madam Stephanie St. Clair, Aaron Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, and a myriad of others whose cultural and political legacies influenced the entire world. On April 26 Jazz at the Spring invites you on a sonic joyride with Ornettiquette a stellar band formed by trumpeter Chris Pasin to honor the music of Ornette Coleman, one of the most powerful and creative innovators in the history of jazz. During his career Ornette Coleman, who in 2007 won the Pulitzer Prize for his album “Sound Grammar,” overturned the structure of be-bop. Be-bop is a style of jazz which uses the architecture of an underlying tune from the American Songbook as the structure for wide ranging improvised solos. Coleman’s idea was to explore melody and do away with the idea of a fixed series of chords. He didn’t do away with harmony, but rather created melodies with amazing harmonic implications as the platform for improvisation. Coleman broke through style and structure to seek sound. Chris Pasin recalls his introduction to the music of Coleman, “I became acquainted with the music of Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler as a teenager, and played along with their records. A little later I transcribed “Ghosts,” and started playing it with people, but it was not until recently that the idea of a band playing the music inspired by these heroes occurred to me, thus engendering “Ornettiquette.” Joining Pasin are some of the region’s most adventurous and accomplished jazz artists, Adam Siegel-alto sax, Michael Bisio-bass, and Harvey Sorgen-drums.

Chris Pasin, trumpet, composer, and band leader, studied at The New England Conservatory. His brilliant trumpet sound has filled Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Royal Albert Hall, the Village Vanguard, Ronnie Scott’s, and the Blue Note; he has traveled with Buddy Rich and performed with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles, Toshiko, Brother Jack McDuff, and many others. He plays with musical artists of all genres, in groups large and small; is a leader himself, and has produced and recorded several outstanding CD’s featuring his own creative compositions.

Adam Siegel is an alto saxophonist with a distinctive voice on his instrument and a passion for storytelling. His virtuosity, while often dazzling, always serves the music that’s at once intellectually stimulating and soulful. His explorations of the works of other composers, such as, Ornette Coleman and Lennie Tristano reveal a maturity beyond his years and, the persistence of a true seeker, as he strives to incorporate his own story and experiences with the works of these jazz masters. Siegel graduated from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, where he was instructed by tenor saxophonists Ben Schachter and Chris Farr. Adam has shared the stage with such greats as Dick Oatts, Jon Gordon, Joe Magnarelli, Grant Stewart, Tani Tabbal, Michael Bisio, Joe McPhee and Pete Seeger. In addition to co-leading the Adam Siegel – Galen Pittman Quartet, Adam is currently a member of the Tani Tabbal Trio, the Walter Donnaruma Group, and the Dylan Perrillo Orchestra.

Bassist-composer Michael Bisio has been called a poet, a wonder and one of the most virtuosic and imaginative performers on the double bass. Nat Chinen writes in The New York Times: “The physicality of Mr. Bisio’s bass playing puts him in touch with numerous predecessors in the avant-garde, but his expressive touch is distinctive.” He has over a hundred recordings in his discography, two dozen as leader or co-leader. JazzTimes describes Michael as a performer who resonates with intelligence, emotional depth and probing virtuosity.” Signal to Noise writes, “Bisio is one of the few musicians who has managed to meld this high concept of physicality with the soulful charge of jazz. His fiddle-high, scraped overtones create a tangled choir that is impossible to resist; his expressiveness with the bow is unmatched.” He has been recognized with nine project grants from various arts organizations, plus the prestigious Artist Trust Fellowship and is an instructor at Bennington College. Michael has been a member of the Matthew Shipp Trio since 2009 performing throughout the Americas and Europe with piano icon Shipp. 2018 has already seen the trio perform to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall as well as looking forward to the Newport Jazz Festival. We are indeed fortunate to have Michael Bisio at the Spring!

Harvey Sorgen’s career spans more than 40 years, and while he might be best known to some from his 14-year stint as the driving percussive force behind the legendary band Hot Tuna or some of his hits with the iconic Paul Simon; the list of jazz luminaries with whom Sorgen, in his career as a jazz artist, has been associated with reads like a who’s who of creative improvised music. Harvey’s musical philosophy is succinctly stated: “In sound, motion and beauty….so to lays the groundwork for truth. All that I am becomes a part of my own way of communication.” His long list of collaborators includes: Ahmad Jamal, The Heath Bothers, Anthony Braxton, Dewey Redman, Jack DeJohnette Bill Frisell and Dave Douglas to name just a few.

Jazz at the Spring is held the last Thursday of each month at the Spring Street Gallery, Saratoga Springs, and is sponsored by Capital District Jazz, Ltd. (CDJ) a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization formed by practitioners and fans who love jazz music. American in origin, jazz reaches and draws from millions of performers and listeners around the globe who are inspired by its rich history, excited by its technical complexity, and moved by its emotional depth. The members of CDJ want to share their love of jazz with current and potential performers and enthusiasts throughout the “Capital District”. CDJ’s mission is to build and serve a wider audience for jazz through education; to create performance opportunities for jazz musicians; and to develop venues for these pursuits. CDJ supports All Ears: Jazz and Improvised Music Workshop, which is a fun hands-on way for students of all ages to learn about jazz.

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
       Antonio Carlos Jobim

“Duduka Da Fonseca has done for Brazilian jazz drumming, what Kenny Clarke had done for jazz drumming in America.”
      Dom Salvador

“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awarness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.”
      Todd Jenkins, Down Beat

“Da Fonseca embodies the pulse of a Brazilian Samba School with a full-set reverie, a percussive wall of sound that seems to come at you from all angles.”

      With music in mind,
      Sincerely,”

      REVIEWS:
“Alexis Parsons” – List of Best CD’s of 2012
by DownBeat Magazine – January 2013

“All these songs of love have their anchor in the paradoxical world reflected  by Alexis Parsons’ self-titled series of tomes on the theme of conflicted, difficult arrangements (Self Release; 40:35 ★★★★).

Accompanied by pianist Frank Kimbrough, the bloom’s off as Parsons delivers an unmannered “The Winter Of My Discontent,” followed by a wistful look back with “Hello Young Lovers,” only to be followed up by a rare, upbeat swinger with “Just Squeeze Me.” The mood is melancholic, as the more seasoned Parsons’ breathy, desultory delivery reminds us that love is not a game to be entered into lightly.”

By John Ephland – “Sirens of Today” – DownBeat Magazine

“….she deserves as much credit for her storytelling abilities as she does for her singing.  She inhabits these songs as if they represent her very being, making Alexis Parsons an alluring listen from start to finish.”

By Dan Bilawsky – All About Jazz

“…she puts everything on the line with a piano and voice recording that would leave the less experienced artist fully exposed and ripe for a potentially critical cyber autopsy…”

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Diane Moser releases her 7 th CD, Birdsongs, inspired by nature’s most lyrical master improvisers—songbirds. Birdsongs combines virtuoso playing, heartfelt originality, and a unique and personal vibe, resulting in music that is exotic yet accessible, like the aural creations of Moser’s fine feathered friends. This new album is likely to vault the multi-talented pianist from her longtime local-favorite status into the top tier of national voices to be reckoned with in jazz. On Birdsongs , Anton Denner on flute and piccolo, and Ken Filiano on bass join the pianist in a trio setting to present nine songbird-inspired tunes, including seven originals. Over the past decade, Moser has performed Birdsongs at venues across the country with different instrumentation from solo piano to big band, acoustic to electronic, and everything in between. “The reason I decided on this group with Anton and Ken, to record all of my birdsongs, was to give the music a little more space and lightness,” Moser explains. “I also knew that both Anton and Ken would play sonically in those in-between places that is so much like the songs and calls that birds make, not always an exact pitch, but somewhere in between.

What The Press Is Saying About Diane Moser’s Birdsong Trio

      Dee Dee McNeil/Jazz Journalist Musicalmemoirs’s Blog March 4, 2018
“..a stunningly original package of music that celebrates birds in a very jazzy way..not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

“Here are three very talented human beings who desire to commemorate birdsongs on their instruments. I find them to be incredibly successful. This is a very beautiful production of original music by Diane Moser, capably interpreted by her stellar piano skills and the two talented musicians who accompany her on bass, flute and piccolo…not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

Dick Metcalf Contemporary Fusion Reviews February 26 2018
Diane’s wonderful piano compositions are supported impeccably by flute/piccolo from Anton Denner and bass by Ken Filiano… & don’t let the “avian” moniker throw you for a loop… this is some of the most beautiful jazz you’ll ever hear… I give Diane and her bandmates a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this splendid album.

      Midwest Record February 20, 2018
“Very much in the realm of a Sunday afternoon egghead session, this recital is [a] well conceived round of sitting down jazz that’s a lot fun if you just let it be. Very much a welcome diversion.”

Leonid Auskern, Jazz Quad, February 2, 2018
Diane and her colleagues play chamber music, very refined, beautiful and inspired by the breath of wildlife. This, of course, is jazz, and high-end jazz. But if you are closer to academic music, then I think you will not be disappointed by Birdsongs. The musical impressionism of Diane Moser carries an almost religious feeling of admiration for the beauty and unity of music and nature.

      Dodie Miller-Gould, Lemon Wire February 15, 2018
To many listeners, it will call to mind the way some bird species bob from branch to branch. All the while, the birds’ actual songs are replicated with the woodwind, and somehow, the sound of flapping wings appears to have been re-created, too. The song is fun, with listeners trying to match instrument sounds to bird behavior and songs. But the arrangement of sounds never allows audiences to forget that they are, in fact, listening to jazz. Moser [and her band] remind audiences to marvel at nature and enjoy the ways in which jazz can be used to express a variety of aspects of the human experience.

Free Jazz Composer Michael Moss Debuts Two Major Compositions On His New Release HELIX.

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new band, the Accidental Orchestra, featuring 22 of the most exciting improvisers on the jazz scene today. His new CD HELIX is the premiere recording of a pair of his latest extended compositions.

HELIX kicks off with “The Old One,” which gets its title from Einstein’s name for God. Moss describes this five-piece suite as “an initiation into sacred ground.” He views it as part of a musical tradition stretching from the earliest ritual over the dead to Bach’s Mass in B Minor, through Native American rites of passage into the spirit world, the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish, and Buddhist funeral rituals.

Moss wrote “See Sharp or Be Flat/C# or Bb” while recovering from a fracture suffered in tripping over a curb. The composer brings a quirky sense of humor to the situation, right down to deciding to name his ensemble the Accidental Orchestra in memory of the incident. Moss aimed to let the band swing on this contrapuntal theme and variations mixing jazz, rhythm and blues, and the joy of dance. “Throughout I refer to Norwegian Wood (The Beatles), I Feel Good (James Brown), and Bags Groove (the Modern Jazz Quartet), but do not resort to familiar big band tropes,” Moss explains. “This is a type of string orchestra, but with lots of jazz musicians pushing the boundaries.”

The Chicago-born, Madison, Wisconsin-educated Michael Moss has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for 50 years, earning recognition for his skill and imagination as a multi-reed player, and for the freshness and intensity of his writing. The self-described “farthest-out cat” was a mainstay of Manhattan’s famed loft jazz scene, playing with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Annette Peacock, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Richie Beirach and scores of others. He’s equally at home from a duo setting to an orchestra of 50-plus players.

As a composer, Moss assigns time signatures to segments of his pieces, but the final form of any given composition depends entirely on the interaction of the musicians.  A sense of space marks much of his work.  Though, like most avant artists he shifts tempos frequently and sometimes drops the meter altogether, he and the group under his direction tend to listen more and play in the openings.  Though his music clearly arises from the jazz tradition, Moss draws heavily from disparate folk idioms.  American blues and Latin rhythmic influences are obvious in his work, but Israeli folk melodies (out of his own Jewish origins) or Tibetan chants (appropriated on a trip to India) are equally likely to emerge in his performances.  Listeners can’t help but be captivated by what they hear, as they accompany Moss and the Accidental Orchestra on this life-long journey.

“Playing free, but still playing together–it’s a question of moving forward by moving backwards and sideways at the same time,” Moss says obliquely, and yet the music seems to do just this, and makes sense. Robert LaBrasca, Press Connection and Rolling Stone writer (1986).

“Moss’ music is conceptually complex and musically brilliant, reaching across ages, cultures and continents for rhythms, phrases, melodies, and harmonics to produce a sound which is fascinating yet unsettling because it is foreign but so familiar.” Fred Waitzkin liner notes Michael Moss/Four Rivers Cross Current (1978).

What The Press Is Saying About HELIX

“This is a stunning achievement – one that demands our attention.”
Grady Harp, Amazon, April 2, 2018

“This fantastic album gets a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from me, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.”
“The 20:37 “C# or Bb” is not only my choice from this album, it’s also my personal favorite improvised set (yet) in 2018!  All the players in the orchestra challenge the boundaries on this one, & I’ve no doubt that those of you who thrive on music that stimulates creativity (in many different directions at once) will be playing this one over & over & OVER again!”
“The orchestra Michael assembled for this stunning trip is amazing in and of itself…over fifteen minutes of far-out fun for all.”
“If it’s etherspace you’re craving for in your listening adventures, you’ll find “Mind Of God” the perfect blend of cool and cacophonous.”
Rotcod Zzaj,Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion ReviewsFebruary 27, 2018

Michael Moss Uses Experimental Jazz To Bring Helix To Life
“While there are swing elements and other traditional jazz elements, but the form here is completely experimental. This is jazz of big ideas. And probably not for beginning jazz fans. Still, there is an energy and perceptiveness that keeps audiences listening, and that might be the most important thing of all.”
“From folk melodies to Renaissance orchestras, to Latin, blues and more, Moss has a nearly encyclopedic array of musical influences. According to Moss, he wants to stretch America’s musical heritage into the future while acknowledging its past innovators such as Louis Armstrong and Scott Joplin. With “Helix” it sounds as though he is doing exactly that.”
“The album succeeds as an experimental album based on a theme – – listeners with traditional expectations of jazz will be surprised or disappointed. But putting traditional restraints on free-flowing experimental jazz is to miss the point of the form.”
      Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire, February 15, 2018

“If Avant Garde, free-form jazz is your preference, you will enjoy listening to the outer limits of Dr. Michael Moss’s artistic creativity. Michael Moss is a 50-year veteran of the New York “free” jazz scene. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and a composer, Chicago-born. At times, this music reminds me of the Chicago Art Ensemble, except that this production features a twenty-two piece orchestra. The Moss production is all over the place, spewing energy and combining instruments and notes in a unique and often dissonant manner.”
“I was particularly drawn to the final “SEE SHARP OR BE FLAT” composition that features a provocative violin solo with complimentary string ensemble support. This composition gives more opportunity for individual players to step forward and solo. I found the guitar solo to be outstanding with Warren Smith’s percussion bright and tasty beneath it.”
“If you have a taste for a project that’s out-of-the-ordinary, the Accidental Orchestra will soothe your palate.”
      Dee Dee McNeil,February 28, 2018

“It is a work to be heard without prejudices, reminiscent of certain episodes of the music of Anthony Braxton.”
“There is everything from the more traditional jazz, with a swing of the rhythm section, to more material and abstract moments like in the long Inception, with instruments like the djembe or the tabla that give a sense of world, or the oboe of Richard Keene, with his nasal sound that stands out on the whole set.”
“Between moments more free and others more tied to the mainstream Moss demonstrates its music culture and the ability to consistently put together moments inspired by different historical periods.”
“A great record of this big band.”
Vittorio Lo Conte, Music Zoom, April, 2018

“The music and albums of this native of Chicago are always distinguished by their originality, and often the use of elements of various ethnic musical cultures.”
“In general – an excellent album for advanced fans of jazz music and, probably, quite a complex work for neophytes.”
Leonid Auskern, Nestor Media, March, 2018

      “Sun Ra-ish Swing”
“The Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a “Who’s Who” of the New York Improvised Music Scene.”
“A dissonant, yet strangely colorful and delightful series of chords emerge with a startling intensity.”
“See Sharp or Be Flat”begins with a shout of joy. It’s a jazz expression of an acceptance of all the good and bad things life throws at us.”
“Bridge”swings, walks, and flows like a rich liquid, as if it is urging you to follow its path.”
“Moss cultivates an intricate musical garden, then allows it to run wild, knowing quite well the trajectories each living thing will take.”
“A master of multiple reed instruments, and compositions . . . Moss knows how to handle himself. His musical inspirations are not limited by genre, culture, or historical period.  To transcend the constant danger of self indulgence and perform music that serves to communicate real ideas and real experiences in service of higher ideals is the sign of a master. Michael Moss and the Accidental Orchestra have accomplished this.”
      Dawoud Kringle,DooBeeDooBeeDoo NY, March, 2018

“MICHAEL MOSS/Helix:  The loft jazz mainstay puts together an Accidental Orchestra, in which the gang is all here, and sets out for places only hinted at in “Metal Machine Music’.  Using Einstein’s name for God as the jumping off point, I’ll bet this how things sound in heaven when Metatron dawdles over a second cup of coffee.”

This special event takes place at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, April 27, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
