The merging of Brazilian music and American jazz changed the trajectory of modern music. The inceptions of bossa nova, samba jazz, and other fusions enable Brazil to make its mark on jazz and beyond, via some incredible musicians and composers, including the legendary Dom Salvador. The remarkable pianist and his classic trios, which blended samba and jazz, made an impression on many during the mid-1960s, including a young Duduka Da Fonseca.

Fonseca’s initial exposure to Salvador’s music came as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro. The budding drummer could hear Salvador’s original trio rehearsing, featuring bassist Sergio Barrozo and drummer Edison Machado, while walking to school. When the group released their seminal recording, Rio 65 Trio, Fonseca was completely spellbound by the music and practiced along to the record religiously, forever engraining Salvador’s music into his psyche.

Though he had met Salvador briefly in Rio, Fonseca didn’t have a chance to play regularly with his idol until 1980. Having been in New York City for five years, Fonseca had played with a who’s who of modern jazz legends, so when Salvador’s drummer wasn’t available, the pianist called Fonseca to fill in. Fonseca surprised Salvador by knowing Salvador’s repertoire backwards and forwards, thus cementing a bond that led to years of playing and touring together.

Salvador and Fonseca played regularly during the 1980s in a quartet that also featured saxophonist Dick Oatts and bassist Dennis Irwin. Their collaborations have continued to this day. In 2015, Fonseca’s relationship with Salvador came full circle when he was asked to play Machado’s parts on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rio 65 Trio recording at Carnegie Hall.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador was born from the leader’s love of Salvador and his music and Fonseca’s effort to make a proper tribute to his friend and mentor. The featured trio was born of a 2000 meeting with pianist David Feldman, who was studying then at the New School in New York, and with whom Fonseca recorded with later in 2009 in Brazil, where he also met the trio’s bassist, Guto Wirtti.

In the efforts to make the best recording and present Salvador’s music in the best light, Fonseca reached out to Salvador for lead sheets for his compositions. Feldman also took time to consult Salvador and learn the repertoire from its source, removing any doubts about structural and interpretive nuances. Many of Salvador’s songs seem simple but have difficult elements, most notably in the rhythmic combinations.

Fonseca traveled to Brazil three times: the first to rehearse the music, the second to record over two days, and the third to mix and master. The trio aimed to make the recording as natural as possible, eventually using many first or second takes.

The recording begins with a tune from that inspiring Rio 65 Trio album, “Farjuto,” a breezy composition whose title comes from dated Rio musician slang. ironically meaning “not so good.” The modal of groove of “Transition” is augmented by a variety of rhythms emanating from the Northeastern provinces of Brazil. The haunting “María” is a minimalistic ballad named for Salvador’s wife of 50 years, which the trio molded in the spirit of Keith Jarrett’s memorable take of “It’s Easy To Remember.” The ensemble performs “Antes Da Chuva” in a looser fashion than the Salvador original, while the straight samba of “Samba Do Malandrinho” is bouncy and smart, apropos to its rascally namesake. The sly “Temátrio” is a grooving composition that emerged from Salvador’s second trio around 1966.

The title of “Gafieira” refers to an old Rio tradition of a ballroom dance incorporating some acrobatic elements, the difficult composition prancing along in a brilliant display of melodic and rhythmic complexity. Salvador’s beautiful ballad “Para Elis” is a dedication to the pianist’s former employer, the iconic singer Elis Regina, and finds the trio augmented by the great cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Performed and recorded as a samba, “Valsa De Esquina” was originally composed as a Brazilian waltz by Salvador, so the trio transformed it into a Bill Evans-esque jazz waltz. The upbeat “Clauditi” is a tribute to a great friend and collaborator, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and features rhythmic elements of samba and the pre-samba maxixe. Perhaps Salvador’s most famous composition, “Meu Fraco é Café Forte” (or “My Weakness Is Strong Coffee”) utilizes an intriguing arrangement by Wirtti that introduces the melody in half time before speeding it up.

Duduka Da Fonseca and his wonderful trio of David Feldman and Guto Wirtti pay tribute to Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador on the enchanting Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador by highlighting the composer’s brilliant music but also giving it new life with new contemporary arrangements.

Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933 was inspired by a remnant of Guillermo Nojechowicz’s family history, the passport that his grandmother carried when she fled Warsaw for Argentina in 1933 along with Nojechowicz’s father, who was then a small boy. Crossing Europe by train, they left behind everything familiar to face the unknownin Buenos Aires – a trip that spared them from the Holocaust, where so many others in their community later perished. The Latin Jazz Suite that chronicles their long, uncertain journey is the centerpiece of EL ECO‘s new recording: Puerto de Buenos Aires 1933.

This is a beautiful and important record.

One of the year’s most spellbinding releases.

“Album of the Year” for the annual critics’ choices, to be published in the Winter 2019 issue of JAZZIZ

With plenty of full-throated jazz soloing, the album has one foot in the southern hemisphere and one in the north, and the personnel also straddles the equator:Guillermo Nojechowicz’s sextet El Eco is rounded out by American trumpet ace Brian Lynch, Argentinian bassist Fernando Huergo, Brazilian pianist Helio Alves, and Italian saxophonist Marco Pignataro, with a string quartet added for additional grandeur. Conceived in solemnity and impressively executed with passion and precision, it succeeds entirely.

What The Press Is Saying About
“West Side Story Reimagined”

“It’s the most ambitious reimagining of the music I have ever heard!”
Jamie Bernstein

“You have never heard such an ambitious, complex, and satisfying remake of that classic. Sanabria, an amazing drummer, draws deep from his Puerto Rican heritage to give this Leonard Bernstein masterpiece a roots-authentic update that’s heavy on Latin jazz influences and full of peppy, energetic rhythms.”
Tom Henry – Toledo Blade

“Among other things, it’s a master class in Latin rhythms. Just get it”
Ken McCarthy – Jazz on the Tube

“If you’re a fan of either Latin jazz or West Side Story, this album is a feast of those flavors.”
Marc Phillips – thevinylanarchist.com/blogspot

“The infusion of Latin rhythms that Mr. Sanabria uses is a big part of what makes this album so stunning.”
   Dick Metcalf – Contemporary Fusion Reviews

 “it’s a love letter to Bernstein as well as a reclamation, tracing his evocation back to the source.”
Nate Chinen – WBGO

“A triumphant, Latin-flavored reimagining of Leonard Bernstein’s masterwork West Side Story.
Bill Milkowski – Downbeat

A captivating and fulfilling recording that more than reimagines this enduring masterpiece.
Pierre Giroux Audiophile Audition

West Side Story Reimagined is Bobby’s retelling of the story in his way, seen through the eyes of love and gratitude and, often, uncertainty.
   As Bobby says, this is “a reimagining from the perspective of a Jazz musician, a Latin musician, and a native Nuyorican son who is proud to say he is from the city that defines aché, hipness, and cool. Aché is Energy.
   In my review of Bobby’s album, Multiverse, I said that “Bobby is a prophet of life.” That was never truer than with West Side Story Reimagined.

 Hendrik Meurkens and Bill Cunliffe present a dynamic harmonica/piano collaboration on their new release, Cabin in the Sky

 Jazz harmonica maven Hendrik Meurkens teams up with acclaimed pianist Bill Cunliffe to present a unique and wonderful mix of tunes on their new duo album, Cabin in the Sky. In addition to several originals, the CD includes compositions by outstanding contributors to the jazz repertoire including Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, plus surprises like a sultry, bluesy version of “Ode to Billie Joe,” the 1967 hit from pop/country singer Bobbie Gentry. Coincidentally, “Ode to Billie Joe” is one of several of the compositions on the album that have their roots in Broadway shows and movies, including the title track, “Invitation,” and “Speak Low.” According to Meurkens, “We did not choose the material with that in mind but as it happens some of the best songs out there are written for Broadway, and I love a good song. I am not so much interested in breaking the latest barrier and pushing the jazz envelope but I am interested in playing beautiful music that warms the heart.” Cabin in the Sky highlights include: “Afternoon”: Cunliffe wrote the rich string arrangements that add such warmth and delicacy to this Meurkens composition. Levity meets virtuosity in this delightfully unique version of Jobim’s “Wave,” replete with references to “Smoke on the Water.” Written by the unlikely duo of Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash, “Speak Low” is played at a slightly sprightlier pace than usual, but with great feeling nevertheless.

Cabin in the Sky is the first recording for Meurkens and Cunliffe, who have talked about meeting in the studio for years, perhaps inspired in part by Affinity, the classic harmonica/piano collaboration of Toots Thielemans and Bill Evans. “This CD goes a little bit in that direction, as it features mostly lyrical material, which is where the harmonica shines anyway,” notes the German-born, New York-based Meurkens. Hearing the legendary Toots Thielemans inspired Meurkens to switch to harmonica from his original instrument, vibes. Now widely regarded as today’s pre-eminent jazz harmonica players in the tradition of Toots Thielemans, Meurkens is also an acclaimed composer in jazz, Latin, and Brazilian styles. Having released more than two dozen albums as leader or coleader, Meurkens is also an in-demand sideman and soloist, appearing with Jimmy Cobb, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Claudio Roditi, Astrid Gilberto, Ray Brown, Paquito D’Rivera, and others.

Pianist Bill Cunliffe has proved himself at home in multiple settings from this duo to trios, big bands, Latin bands, and classical-jazz ensembles; he is also an acclaimed soloist with symphony orchestras. A Grammy-winning arranger, Cunliffe has received multiple Emmy and Grammy nominations, and has released more than a dozen albums as a leader, authored several books, and composed several film scores. He is an in-demand jazz sideman, having worked with masters including Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, and Benny Golson.

With Cabin in the Sky, Meurkens and Cunliffe reveal a new side to their virtuosity. Let’s hope this simpatico duo won’t keep listeners waiting to long for a follow up to this great new CD.

PIANIST-COMPOSER ANTONIO ADOLFO
TEAMS UP WITH A BRAZILIAN BIG BAND

FOR A MEMORABLE RECORDING OF NEW BRAZILIAN JAZZ
ENCONTROS WILL BE RELEASED BY AAM ON JULY 11

Throughout the past 40 years, Antonio Adolfo has had a very busy career as a pianist, composer and arranger. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, his teachers included Eumir Deodato and Nadia Boulanger (in Paris). A jazz pianist since the mid-1960s in Brazil, Adolfo worked with such major singers as Leny Andrade, Flora Purim, Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento and has recorded more than 25 albums as a leader. A major name for decades, his music combines together Brazilian rhythmic styles with jazz. His previous recording, Antonio Adolfo “HYBRIDO – From Rio to Wayne Shorter,” was a 2018 Grammy finalist.

As a bandleader, Antonio Adolfo has mostly been featured with small groups that showcase his music and his solo abilities. However he has long considered it a major goal to someday record an album with a larger ensemble, a big band that had a full understanding of both Brazilian music and jazz.

Encontros – Orquestra Atlantica is the realization of that dream. After having seen a performance in Rio de Janeiro by Orquestra Atlantica, a Brazilian jazz orchestra founded in 2012, Antonio Adolfo was so impressed that he invited the group to be a major part of his new recording. With up to seven horns and several guests, Adolfo had many new tone colors at his disposal along with the powerful sound of a big band. The result is an exciting set comprised of nine of Adolfo’s compositions plus Miles Davis’ “Milestones.” The inventive arrangements of Jesse Sadoc and Marcelo Martins mix together the sound of big band jazz with such Brazilian styles as the Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao, Frevo, and the Afoxe to create memorable and infectious music.

The program begins with “Partido Samba-Funk,” a tune that combines Samba with the type of Brazilian funk often heard at dance parties in Rio and Sao Paulo. The colorful percussion, the horn riffs, and the solos by Adolfo, altoist Danilo Sinna, and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc (who makes a particularly explosive statement) get Encontros Orquestra Atlantica off to a stirring start.

“Pentatonica,” a melodic piece with strong forward momentum, has spots for guest guitarist Leo Amuedo and tenor-saxophonist Marcelo Martins along with some singing by Ze Renato.

“Atlantica,” which Adolfo named after the big band, is a warm medium-tempo ballad. The concise bass, flute and piano solos are strong assets during the atmospheric work.

“Luizao” is a tribute to the late great bassist Luizao Maia, an innovator in reinventing the way that the samba is played on bass, and a member of Antonio Adolfo’s early groups. The mostly straight ahead performance by the big band is highlighted by valve trombonist Serginho Trombone’s inventive solo.

The set’s lone standard, “Milestones,” is a combination of boppish jazz and Frevo. The rapid ensemble work by the horns is quite impressive and there are also excellent solos from Adolfo and accordionist Marcos Nimrichter.

Brazilian music often alternates in the same piece (and sometimes the same chorus) between happiness and a melancholy mood. “Saudade” gives listeners a good example of that unique feel, accentuated by the playing of flugelhornist Jesse Sadoc.

Capoeira is an unusual Brazilian dance that is combined with martial art. The berimbau, a one-string instrument, is a major part of that style. “Capoeira Ya” has a strong hint of both the berimbau and flamenco guitar in Nelson Faria’s playing along with impressive trumpet and piano solos.

“Africa Bahia Brasil” shows the African influence in Brazilian culture, blending together Afoxe and jazz in a very danceable performance. Danilo Sinna takes a particularly passionate alto solo while Adolfo makes one of his strongest statements of the album.

Contrasting the mood a bit, “Delicada Jazz Waltz” is a gentle piece with a delicate melody. The solos of Adolfo and accordionist Marcos Nimrichter are subtle and pleasing.

Encontros – Orquestra Atlantica concludes with a new version of Antonio Adolfo’s biggest hit, “Sa Marina.” Composed in 1967 and released internationally as “Pretty World” with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the number has been recorded by more than 200 artists. In addition to a fine solo from the leader, this memorable rendition has Marcelo Martins featured on tenor, and there is also a colorful tradeoff between baritonist Levi Chaves and trombonist Aldivas Ayres.

                It is very rare for Brazilian jazz to be performed by a big band, particularly one of this quality. Hearing Antonio Adolfo’s music played by a top-notch orchestra casts new light on his writing abilities. Whether one loves Brazilian music, big bands or modern jazz, Encontros – Orquestra Atlantica makes for a memorable and stimulating listening experience. Best World Music Album
Sultans of String – Christmas Caravan

This follows our great trajectory with this album that hit Billboard World Music Charts for three weeks, and was featured in the New York Times Christmas Hits List!

Christmas Caravan takes listeners on a world music tour. 3-time JUNO nominees and 3-time CFMA winning ambassadors of musical diversity Sultans of String have expanded the traditional notion of Christmas music with their new, genre-hopping disc, Christmas Caravan, injecting it with new-found energy and non-traditional sounds. Recorded and co-produced with JUNO Award winning engineer John ‘”Beetle” Bailey, this isn’t your typical holiday album. You may recognize a few titles, but you’ve never experienced seasonal music quite like this before.

“Canadian band Sultans of String keeps imaginative imperatives in overdrive for the entirety of Christmas Caravan, a generous pitch for global unity through the music of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. These five musicians have jubilantly recharged the classics with arrangements that demand attention. ★★★★ Downbeat, USA

“An amazing world beat Christmas where even the tried and true is taken to such new and amazing lengths. Very hot stuff clearly made to chase the cold winter away”
Midwest Record, USA

Sultans of String’s acclaimed world music tapestry has been amplified on this release through its embrace of orchestration and pop, and spurred on by a stellar cast of guest musicians, bringing even more colour to their lively palette.

“We wanted to make a real contribution to the Christmas repertoire, and hopefully create some new standards” says bandleader/violinist and Queens Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool. “This is a Christmas album, but approached from the perspective of a world-music band. We explored diverse genres, from Quebecois fiddle tunes to collaborating with a traditional Turkish string ensemble, and jump around from the classic sounds of the Andrews Sisters, to a Himalayan sleigh ride, African roots music, gypsy-jazz, rumba flamenco, ska, and the grandeur of the symphony.”

Featuring…

First, the band made a dream list of their favourite vocal and instrumental artists to join in on this musical sleigh ride. Their holiday wish came true with these amazing guests appearing on the recording:

• 6-time Grammy winning Paddy Moloney (The Chieftains),
• Ruben Blades & Luba Mason (Panamanian 7 Grammy and 5 Latin Grammy winner),
• platinum-selling jazz vocalist Nikki Yanofsky;
• 2-time JUNO/Grammy winner Alex Cuba;
• Benoit Bourque of Quebec’s La Bottine Souriante (3 JUNOs, 4 gold, 3 platinum records);
• Sweet Honey in the Rock (Grammy winning, all-woman, African-American a cappella group);
• Cameroon’s Richard Bona (Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock);
• Canada’s singer to the stars Rebecca Campbell (Emmylou Harris, Alanis Morissette);
• singer Mary Fahl from NYC’s October Project;
• Gundem Yayli Grubu, a recording collective of Turkish Roma violinists in Istanbul;
• Sudanese-Canadian singer Waleed Abdulhamid;
• Nashville-based JUNO Award winning country singer Crystal Shawanda;
• sitar virtuoso Anwar Khurshid;
• and hang drum player David Charrier from France.

Why make a Christmas album for a band that has earned its street cred on performing music from diverse cultures? McKhool explains “My parents are from Lebanese and Egyptian backgrounds, and also celebrated Christmas in the home. So Christmas songs as well as music from around the globe were always part of my upbringing. With this record we created the spiritual Christmas album I have always wanted to hear that honoured this tradition, as well as bringing in diverse cultures. As a violin player, I also performed with string orchestras in my youth, so the icing on the cake was traveling to Prague to record with the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra! One of my favourite tracks, Jesous Ahatonhia (The Huron Carol), is fascinating to me. I went back into the archives and found a direct transliteration of the original Huron-Wendat lyrics, which were written in the 1600s by St Jean de Brebeuf. This is Canada’s first Christmas carol, and while there are some complex issues around this song, it is of great historical significance. Now people can hear the intent of the original lyrics for the very first time. Ojibwe artist Crystal Shawanda vocal is so compelling on this song!”

Naturally, the main soloist is Wiley himself, and the sound of his horns can not be denied elegance. But multi-instrumentalist, Dan Higgins (excellent flute in Carilõ and Black Orchid, a perfect combination of a horn and a tenor saxophone sound in Sama Layuca), and acoustic guitarist Leggett, who decorated the melody El Gorriõn, are no less good either. Add to this a solid rhythm group with the participation of the famous Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, and you will get an idea of the richness of the sound palette of this album. You also have all the chances to “feel the vibrations of the World and Love,” as the author of the album Cuerno Exotica writes in liner notes.

PRESS Quotes
 ‘Such is Beirne’s skill that she sings these pop favourites as though she were singing Gershwin, Porter or Berlin’
Jazz Journal (Derek Ansell)

‘Beirne has a talent for recognizing within these songs the seeds of jazz…the phrasing’s and rhythms that can bring out the swing that might not be obvious to many…Engaging, sophisticated… ‘It’s pure jazz.’
All About Jazz 4 ****review (Bruce Lindsay)

‘The textures and colours of her voice really shine through giving the album a truthful connection to these former pop songs’
London Jazz News (Sarah Chaplin)

 ‘Beirne scats and soars, stretching syllables over slinky sax lines… her vocals are subline’
Jazz in Europe (George Cole)

 ‘Beirne’s vocals often sound like the phrasing of a tenor saxophone. She knows how to hit those notes and get in between the cracks of them like a virtuoso instrumentalist…’
LA Jazzscene (Doc Wendell)

 ‘A jazz album so different than anything that has been done before’
Grammy Winning Jason Miles
 ‘It’s raw, energetic and her vocal is both sassy and commanding.’Limahl

 ‘I love the jazz version of Noize…Fab Singer!’ Noddy Holder “Slade”

 ‘I was absolutely thrilled by the way Beirne handles her voice, swinging in a masterly fashion and even in soft passages the voice is perfectly placed. Beirne displaces the beat with finesse, using her voice like an instrument.
The Art Music Lounge (US)

“Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes. “
            Michael Bailey – All about jazz

“Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time.  A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout.  Check it out.”
            – CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

“A confluence of rhythms rooted in samba, bossa nova, blues, and swing come together with soothing vocals on Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes from vocalist Gabriele Tranchina. She bridges traditional Latin and jazz-inspired motifs with New World impressions.”

“…Certainly one of the most influential voices on chromatic harmonica since Stevie Wonder and the late Toots Thielemans….”   JazzTimes – Philip Booth

“… While all jazz harmonica players start out in the shadow of Toots Thielemans, Meurkens has come the closest of anyone to filling the gap left by Thielemans’ passing. Meurkens has his own sound and approach to the instrument and can play bop, Brazilian music and ballads with the best…” L.A. Jazz Scene – Scott Yanow

“All of a sudden it seems that Hendrik Meurkens is the jazz harmonica player to know…“Cabin in the Sky” is an almost instant classic…(Meurkens’) approach to jazz and to harmonica playing have broadened the instrument’s use in the genre…(Meurkens) is now considered today’s pre-eminent jazz harmonica player….” Lemon Wire – Dodie Miller-Gould

“… truly some of the best duo jazz I’ve heard in 2018.”  Dick Metcalf – Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“It is perhaps inevitable that people should start hailing Hendrik Meurkens as the new Toots Thielemans…”  All About Jazz – Chris Mosey

Trick or Treat?

Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas releases a wildly fun and rockin’ new single for Halloween this year, “The House is Haunted”

The original tune “The House is Haunted by the Echo of Your Last Goodbye” is a classic  swing song from 1938, but the Lonesome Fellas cleverly morph it into a swing/rockabilly/blues crossover,  featuring the distinctive and renown tempo from  Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’  “I Put a Spell on You”.

The spotlight is turned to  saxophonist Eric Schneider, who wails away like Sam Taylor from the Screamin’ Jay renditon, while guitarist Neal Alger breaks out a hard blues guitar.    Bassist Chris Bernhardt leads the throbbing  tempo and  drummer Phil Gratteau spanks a hard, rock-blues beat.  Over the top of it all, vocalist Solitaire Miles belts the lyrics for “Haunted” with her notorious  Patsy Cline/Billie Holiday hybrid  vocal, consummating a cacophony of melody, tempo and genres.

When you listen to the first few bars you get a TRICK, thinking that Miles will be warbling the first lines of “I Put a Spell on You”, but Fellas fans are in for one hell of a TREAT  when she delivers a totally different and unexpected  melody on top of the infamous Screamin’ Jay beat.   “The House is Haunted” is an entertaining and lively addition to your Halloween collection.   – JM Reid, Chicago Music Guide

The tune is available for digital download on Bandcamp in several high quality file types available including mp3, wav and flac.  https://solitairemiles.bandcamp.com/track/susie-blue-the-lonesome-fellas-the-house-is-haunted

NESTOR TORRES:

JAZZ FLUTE TRADITIONS

Receives

2018 Latin Grammy Nomination

for Best Latin Jazz / Jazz Album

shem.gif

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA – Latin Grammy Award Winning Flautist Nestor Torres receives Latin Grammy Nomination for his release Jazz Flute Traditions on Alfi Records.

With his Caribbean heritage, Classical training and and a unique, rhythmic & melodic approach to Jazz improvisation, Nestor Torres’ talkative and mellifluous flute sound remains apart in a class all by itself. Now, with his 15th album release, the Flautist shows his deep respect and knowledge for the tradition of Jazz and Latin Jazz in its purest forms.

This eleven-song offering pays homage to legendary Jazz Flute pioneers like Herbie Mann and Eric Dolphy, as well as Torres’ idol and mentor, Hubert Laws. The tribute expands further, from Frank Wess and Moe Koffman, who were playing the instrument when it was still showing up in the “miscellaneous” categories of major 1950’s jazz polls, to revolutionaries such as Yusef Lateef and Esy Morales.

“For years I’ve wanted to pay tribute to the Jazz Flute pioneers that opened the way for us”, says Nestor. The selection of songs are daringly diverse. From the popular and catchy ‘Swingin’ Shepherd Blues’ and funky ‘Memphis Underground’ to the avant garde in ‘Gazzelloni’; from Count Basie’s straight ahead ‘Cute’ and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s ‘Serenade To A Cuckoo’ to hard core Latin Jazz with ‘Jungle Fantasy’. The stylistic jaunt goes on with Lateef’s haunting ‘The Golden Flute’ and includes Chick Corea’s flute showcases ‘Windows’ & ‘Spain’. Nestor Torres defies the daunting task of bringing together what would seem to be an incongruent mix & match of unrelated pieces by creating a cohesive and exciting narrative of the rich, deep and somewhat overlooked contribution of the flute to the Jazz cannon. Torres himself contributes to the Jazz Flute Tradition with his very personal renditions of the mid 20th century standards ‘Miami Beach Rhumba’ and Cole Porter’s ‘So In Love’.

“The release of Jazz Flutes Traditions capture(s) his energy, depth,

and technical brilliance… all that and more.”
Mark Ruffin – Real Jazz SiriusXM Program Director at Sirius/XM Satellite Radio

14 previous albums as a soloist, 5 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award, as well as collaborations with artists such as Dave Mathews, Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tito Puente, are testament to the remarkable versatility of an Artist who continuously challenges himself to push music forward, this time steeped in the total tradition of Jazz. Jazz Flute Traditions is a revelation of Nestor Torres’ essence, prowess and artistry, as he pays a most worthy tribute to and stands on the shoulders of those who came before him.

The UNT program began in the late 40s, when big bands dominated the musical landscape, and has long included a different rehearsal group for nearly every hour of the day. It is in this musically supercharged environment that talented young musicians have experienced preparing new work, collaborations with guest artists and frequent performances. Daily music nurturing at such a high professional standard has produced memorable bands over the years and this edition of the One O’Clock Lab Band is undoubtedly one of the school’s finest. Leader Alan Baylock, known for his own groups and arrangements, is co-producer and director here and he has assembled a particularly well-conceived set bristling with depth and conviction. The foundation of a great big band is the drummer and the lead trumpeter. John Sturino, whose arranging chops are also on display here, demonstrates a high level of expertise in the art of swing, as well as the sensitivity he brings to ballads. Lead trumpeter Nick Owsik knows phrasing and style, and possesses the necessary power to generate excitement when needed.

The opener, Mr. Sturino’s arrangement of Victor Lewis’ “Hey, It’s Me You’re Talkin’ To,” is a rousing invitation to join the party, showcasing each section of the band individually, as well as the group itself.

The excitement continues on the title track “The Rhythm of the Road,” multi-instrumentalist Brandon Moore’s composition and arrangement, featuring a relentlessly swinging shuffle groove and challenging chord changes expertly navigated by soloists Brian Woodbury on trombone, lead alto Kyle Bellaire, and drummer Sturino. Moore also arranged Chris Potter’s pensive “Train,” which features him on tenor, Daniel Pinilla on guitar, and vocalist Marion Powers, who is elegantly woven into the ensemble tapestry.

“Blues for Kazu,” composed and arranged by Brandon Moore, was written for trumpeter Kazunori Tanaka, a native of Tokyo. Mr. Tanaka is an old musical soul whose heart lies deeply in the blues, his plunger work recalling Cootie Williams. Jazz is played all over the planet these days and this edition of the group includes musicians from the US, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Japan and Taiwan, proving once again that our homegrown art form has a message that resonates globally.

The band also includes vocalist Marion Powers, whose silky take on “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing” is a tasteful contrast to the group’s more hard-driving, brilliantly crafted arrangements.

Professor Rich DeRosa, who comes from a family of jazz educators, contributed his composition “Birds of a Feather…,” and in addition to his teaching chops, Mr. DeRosa’s flair for robust composing and his world-class arranging acumen have few peers. Pianist Paul Lees really shines here, pulling the rhythm out of the big band, taking us to new musical ground.

Alan Baylock’s demanding “Without a Doubt” is a marvel, with a “take no prisoners” absolutely cooking alto solo from Sam Cousineau. “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5,” a Heitor Villa-Lobos composition arranged by lead trombonist Brian Woodbury, is a fascinating blend of musical styles which showcases trombonist DJ Rice.

The set closes with Brandon Moore’s arrangement of John Coltrane’s moody “After the Rain.” In a 10/8 time signature, it’s an introspective way to close the recording that broadens the set’s expressive range.

Featuring noteworthy, perfectly executed arrangements and soloists who play far beyond their years, Lab 2018 | The Rhythm of the Road demands repeated listening. Although skeptics have long believed big band jazz is no longer relevant, this recording offers proof that the big bands are alive, well and flourishing.

MARIA MULDAUR RELEASES 41st ALBUM:
“DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG: THE NAUGHTY BAWDY BLUES OF BLUE LU BARKER” AND LAUNCHES NEW ALBUM TOURSEPTEMBER 28th

NEW ORLEANS— Multiple Grammy nominee Maria Muldaur will release her 41stalbum, and her first studio album in 6 years on September 28th. “DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG—The Naughty Bawdy Blues of Blue Lu Barker” is her first for the London-based Last Music Company.

Recorded this past June, the album is a tribute to popular vocalist and songwriter Blue Lu Barker, who made her mark in the late 30s and early 40s, and whom Billie Holiday once cited as her biggest influence. Featuring a stellar band of NOLA musicians including New Orleans A-listers David Torkanowsky on piano (Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas, Solomon Burke), Roland Guerin on bass (Allen Toussaint, Steve Earle, Chris Thomas King), and Herlin Riley on drums (Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson), among others, DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG brings Muldaur full circle from the 1973 album sessions that spawned Muldaur’s million-selling hit, “Midnight At The Oasis,” and which also featured a sassy take of Barker’s “Don’t You Feel My Leg,” a cult favorite that remains Muldaur’s most requested song to this day at her performances.

“Because of my friendship with Blue Lu and Danny, and my longtime association with that song, I was invited to New Orleans in 2016 to put on a concert paying tribute to Blue Lu in New Orleans. I started doing some in-depth research of all their past recordings, and to my surprise and delight I discovered that they had written and recorded dozens of songs equally naughty, bawdy, witty, and clever as ‘Don’t You Feel My Leg’. Besides the wonderfully funny, suggestive lyrics, I was really struck and quite charmed by Blue Lu’s delivery of these tunes… droll, sly, full of sass and attitude, yet understated…a bit girlish and coy. Her cool nonchalance and crisp ladylike diction in contrast to the naughty, risqué lyrics made them smolder with innuendo all the more. These were songs by hipsters, for hipsters,” says Muldaur.

Muldaur adds, “as we sit here in 2018, you might well ask why a vintage gal like me feels it is important to present these vintage tunes at this point in time. Well for one thing, in an era when so many aspects of sexuality are dealt with and discussed with such deadly seriousness, I find the lighthearted playful expressions of sexuality in these songs a pleasant and welcome respite from the fraught discourse prevailing today…and for another…these are all basically hip, fun happy songs, and I think we could all use a big dose of HAPPY right about now.”

DON’T YOU FEEL MY LEG: THE NAUGHTY BAWDY BLUES OF BLUE LU BARKER is due out September 28th.   Muldaur will tour in conjunction with the release.

Growing up as a Nuyorican kid in the Bronx, Bobby Sanabria first watched “West Side Story” in the movie theaters, on the 10th anniversary of the film’s release. “I was mesmerized,” said the Latin Jazz drummer and composer. Last year, “West Side Story” celebrated its 60th anniversary and to honor this milestone, Sanabria re-envisioned what Latino New York City actually sounds like. The result was his album, “West Side Story Reimagined.” Maria Hinojosa talks to the drummer and composer about what the iconic musical means to him and how he paid tribute to its legacy.

Pedro Giraudo
Vigor Tanguero
(ZOHO ZM201803)
Street Date: April 6, 2018
Pedro Giraudo-bass, Nick Danielson-violin,
Rodolfo Zanetti-bandoneón, Emilio Teubal-piano

Vigor Tanguero is the first tango CD for bassist, bandleader, and composer Pedro Giraudo. After releasing five remarkable albums performed by various formats of jazz ensembles, his gaze was captured by the glint of tango. Perhaps it was only matter of time, as Giraudo hails from the birthplace of tango, Argentina, and so this album is a homecoming of sorts. A man revisiting the music of his country and culture, contributing not something homespun but tantalizing and suggestive.

“I enjoyed every second of the process,” said Giraudo, who seems capable of scaling any musical summit. He wrote these pieces for the brilliant quartet of Nick Danielson (violin), Rodolfo Zanetti (bandoneón), Emilio Teubal (piano), and himself (bass). And by so doing, he realized that his works were in fact rooted in the best of the tango tradition. Each selection can be categorized and described according to one of three tango rhythms: milongas, valses, and tangos.

Of course, there are some exceptions, but throughout you’ll hear Giraudo tinkering and experimenting with the fundamental tango rhythmic cells – pushing, pulling, even suspending the syncopated feel as he engineers a new aesthetic or archetype for this music that he loves. “I tried to express many emotions on this album: happiness, joy, passion, sadness, intimacy, vulnerability, and playfulness,” he says. No matter what this album makes you feel, it will be borne out of authenticity, as Giraudo’s genuine spirit shines through each note, beat, and breath.

The first piece Vorágine means “Whirlwind” in English, but it’s not an exact translation, as Giraudo has struggled to find a word that conveys the chaos and confusion that afflict those living in New York. “This is my anthem for the city,” he says. He constructed the piece with a straightforward ABA form, with an almost identical introduction and coda. The first section is through composed with an unstable eight-note scale that late French composer Olivier Messiaen (1908 – 1992) employed with aplomb. The subsequent section is right out of the Astor Piazzolla (1922- 1992) playbook, with obvious tonal and timbral references to the late tango grandmaster.

Entre Bambalinas translates to “Between Scenes” and is a reference to those fabric dividers on stages. The term is used colloquially to describe what happens backstage or behind closed doors. The bass elegantly presents the prelude and epilogue. Between these parts is the main ABA section that invokes a waltz meter: at times the twelve eighth notes which are placed in two measures, grouped in the unusual manner of 3-2-3-2-2. In this piece, we hear Giraudo demonstrating his prodigious compositional talent, moving the beats across the mountains of his mind.

Giraudo wrote Con Un Nudo En La Garganta or “With a knot in the throat” in 2004 for his jazz orchestra and it eventually became the middle movement of his epic and noteworthy “Desconsuelo Suite” which can be heard in its large ensemble version on his other 2018 ZOHO CD release with the WDR Big Band, “An Argentinian in New York” (ZM 201804). This piece is total tango and channels the best elements of the tradition. Hearing how brilliantly his large band performed the piece, he wanted to arrange it for his tango quartet. And you can hear for yourself – it’s an intoxicating melody with beautifully sparse and stirring chordal accompaniment.

Chicharrita or “Cicada” is an homage to Osvaldo Pugliese (1905-1995) who was a towering leader and figure in tango’s enigmatic history. As a composer, bandleader, and pianist, Pugliese had a unique style characterized by lush landscapes of sound. Yet he had a high-pitched voice which earned him the affectionate nickname of “Chicharrita.” This piece was commissioned in 2015 by Giraudo’s friend and trumpetist Hiro Noguchi, and this is ultimately Giraudo’s take on the traditional milonga that pays respect to Pugliese. It begins with a rubato introduction, which gives way to a descending and chromatic line that lingers in your hearts and stirs your soul. The comparison to the fully orchestrated version of Giraudo’s composition is again fascinating, it can also be heard on his WDR Big Band collaboration “An Argentinian in New York” mentioned above.

A Octavio Brunetti (Dedicated to Octavio Brunetti) (1975 – 2014) is a song of friendship. Both Brunetti and Giraudo were beer enthusiasts, and during one of their many tours of Japan, they came up with a ditty with the Japanese lyrics “Biru No-mou-ze,” which means “let’s have a beer!” They would play or whistle the motive (A-A-D-F#-F#) after a long day of rehearsals, as siren calls that it was time to enjoy a drink. When Giraudo embarked upon writing a piece for his dear friend Brunetti, he remembered the motive, and constructed a full tango (with the traditional ABABA form) borne of levity but bedazzled with bleaker harmonies.
Desavenencias or “Rifts” is Giraudo’s first foray into writing traditional tango waltz, as he invokes a classical minuet and trio with proficiency and skillfulness. Also commissioned by Hiro Noguchi, Giraudo adapted the piece for his tango quartet.

La Rabiosa or “The rageful woman” is just that – a piece Giraudo wrote to describe an angry lady. It’s based on a rhythm from the countryside known as the chacarera that has a particular musical and dance structure. The atonality and jarring lines convey anxiety, frenzy, and even rage, showing that music can be vehicle of every expression. Giraudo originally wrote this composition for his big band, as the 3rd movement of the Angela Suite, and it is featured on his 2015 ZOHO CD release “Cuentos” (ZM 201503).

The last three selections are meditations on extreme feelings, from total awareness, to letting go of all fears and desires. Lapidario or “Merciless” is a term that Argentinians use to describe a comment that cuts, hurts, and is harsh. Giraudo juxtaposes two themes, one which is forceful, built upon certain triads, whereas the other is more melancholy and thematic in nature. Taken together, these themes represent two sides of an argument, or rather, the syncopation at the heart of the tango.

Desapego or “Detachment” is a non-obvious penultimate piece. You almost expect a tango album to end with adventure and escapade, yet Giraudo renders his selection with a vals that draws upon folkloric influences and casts a broad emotional range, only to end with a feeling of non-closure. You are left wanting, but that’s the point, to detach from the desire of resolution, and to realize that life is an ellipsis…and we can’t always fill in the blanks.

The album ends with A Campo Abierto or “In the open field,” a searing and emotive composition that also incorporates folkloric traditions. Giraudo employs the rhythm of vidala or vidalita which treats space and silence as a central element. It’s a poignant ending to a very personal album, one on which we hear what happens when a tango master looks into the mirror and gives every bit of himself.

Rocked Out Seriously Funky Jaw Dropping Ear Candy! is the subtitle/explanation tothe name of the spectacular group Vinyl Hampdinwhose debut album Red(Armored Records) provides undeniable testimony to every word of that heavily promising description. Founded by the remarkable trombonist/composer-arranger Steve Wiest, the band is a powerhouse of highly acclaimed award-winning musicians whose wide range of credentials covers a full swath from Maynard Ferguson and Carmen McRae to DJ Logic and the current aggregation of the legendary super-group Chicago.

That last credit is quite appropriate as Steve’s concept behind this group is “What would Chicago, Blood Sweat &Tears and Tower of Power sound like if they started out today?” This remarkable recording provides an excellent answer, especially if you roll the lean and mean funkiness of Fred Wesley’s and Maceo Parker’s JBs into the mix. Steve also applies the unfailing Charles Mingus recipe of… if you want a band that sounds big; bring in musicians with big sounds. And every member of Vinyl Hampdin– from horns to rhythm to the explosive vocal dynamo Lisa Dodd – owns a very big voice, making this 4-horn, 4-rhythm ensemble thunder like a big band.

Joining Steve and Lisa in the group are Art Bouton on baritone sax and flute; Ray Herrmann on tenor sax and flute; trumpeter Frank David Greene; guitarist Ryan Davidson; Eric Gunnison on keyboards; and Gerald Stockton and Stockton Helbing on bass and drums respectively.  The musicianship is virtuosic, with Lisa’s sensational vocals as the nucleus – and always fully in place as part of the ensemble sound. Both the horn tandem and rhythm section play with a synergy of purpose that locks them together not only as individual components of the music, but also in symbiotic fashion to create a unified sound that can deliver the bounty with seismic intensity or subtle gentility, even with just a quarter-rest for the transition. The solos – exceptional, but short and no-nonsense – abstain from virtuosity for its own sake, but are there as part of the overall context to enhance the unified sound.

The outstanding repertoire of 11 songs – all flawlessly arranged by Steve – is comprised of six covers and five Wiest originals (two with lyrics by Dodd). The covers remain faithful enough to the source material of these highly popular songs, but the stunningly original arrangements certainly qualify them as re-imaginations. One possible exception to this is the opening track’s adherence to Stevie Wonder’s brilliant horn and synthesizer lines on Superstition,as even a writer as enormously talented as Wiest knows there’s no purpose in messing with perfection. But his superb arrangement using the baritone sax as the main engine of the horns, along with infectious syncopation, exciting call-and-response and Gunnison’s terrific piano solo make it totally fresh.

Bookending this as the closing track is a more liberal interpretation, with rolling horns providing extra jetpower for the rhythm section-driven exploration of Bill Withers’ classic Use Me; filled with sparkling syncopation, tantalizing suspensions, a rip-roaring wah-wah guitar solo and a smoking Afro-Cuban flavored climax. Back into the big-sound root source is Rare Earth’s I Just Want to Celebrate, with its multi-layered horns, vibrant vocal and Steve delivering a pair of energetically hollerin’ trombone solos.

Transforming the source material into larger sound is at the core of the remaining three covers. Bonnie Raitt’s The Road’s My Middle Nameretains its country blues roots with Lisa’s blues-drenched, soulful vocal but with punchy horns replacing the harmonica obbligato of the original and a delightful two-step danced by vocal and guitar. The Statler Brothers’ Flowers on the Wall, with dueling and suspended horn lines and a starkly syncopated rhythm section with a growling bottom pushing the vocal produce a palpable sense of the ominous throughout. Linda and Paul McCartney’s captivating Wings ballad My Lovereceives a straightforward, lovely take with the rich horn arrangement providing a lustrous canvas for Lisa’s winsome vocal.

Wiest’s five originals are all perfectly complementary to the hit tunes contained on this delightful album, with Lisa offering the compelling lyrics for two of them. Pay for Itfollows its N’Orleans funeral march-like opening with an unfettered kick-ass soul-fest. Deliciously suspended horns with wailing trombone and trumpet usher in a gutty Herrmann tenor solo and riveting call-and-response between horns and vocal, spiraling into a closing tornado. Billionswith powerful, sobering lyrics is a dramatic, narrative-driven piece with staccato horns that swells to a vivid climax, downshifts into a slow boil of horns and syncopated rhythm, then soars to a second staggering climax – truly a song for our challenging times.

Steve also wrote the intriguing lyrics for the remaining three songs, which further demonstrate Wiest’s impressive range as a composer. Gottaluvitis a hard-rocking kicker built on the sound of the title, stoked by Afro-beat style, chicken-scratch guitar. With horn/voice unison chant on the title refrain, it also features a round-robin of blazing horn solos. On Diamonds,richly lustrous horns drape, cushion and prod Lisa’s passionate vocal, setting the scene for sprawling guitar interwoven with swirling horns and closing on a group vocal chant. Essentially a four-movement suite, One Song’s opening fanfare morphs into a gentle vamp that evokes the intro to Stairway to Heaven and flows into an anthem-ish ballad buoyed by sumptuous horns and dramatic drums. Then a sinuous build to a crescendo with wailing guitar, ultimately closing out amid densely textured horns.

Blending its heavy focus upon hard-blowing, high-gear, take-no-prisoners explosiveness with subtle and entrancing imagination, Vinyl Hampdin’s Redis a marvelous debut and a portent of great things to come.
