The music of Huddie William Ledbetter, the iconic Lead Belly, is featured in the concert

The Music of Lead Belly & more
played by drummer Adam Nussbaum, saxophonist Ohad Talmor, and the electric guitar tandem of Steve Cardenas and Nate Radley.

Come to the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall, SUNY Orange, at 8pm on Friday, March 9, 2018. This concert has been rescheduled from stormy March 2.

Lead Belly played piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and diatonic accordion known as a windjammer, but was best known for his virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar.  Therefore, when Adam Nussbaum created the Lead Belly Project, he chose two of the finest electric guitarists. Steve Cardenas and Nate Radley plus sax player Ohad Talmor take a “firm grasp of the tradition and listen, react and respond,” according to Adam Nussbaum.  And with Nussbaum’s jazz background “he interprets old Lead Belly tunes, through a jazz lens,” states jazz pianist/composer and SUNY Orange music professor Chris Parker.

So come for a memorable evening of “Good Night Irene,”  “Bring Me A Little Water, Sylvie,”  “Black Betty,”  “Grey Goose,” and “Green Corn” to name a few.

All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the box office beginning one hour before the concert, or online anytime a

plus a $ 2.50 service charge for each online ticket. Free tickets for all students are available only at the box office.

Cynthia Sayer Video

CYNTHIA SAYER, the internationally celebrated jazz banjoist, will lead her Joyride Quartet in “The Hot Jazz Banjo Show” in a rare New York City concert appearance at the legendary jazz club Birdland on Thursday, March 15 at 6:00 PM. Birdland is located at 315 W. 44th Street in Manhattan. Tickets:  $30. For more information:  T: (212) 581-3080 or Birdland  or Cynthia Sayer.

“Some of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest 2017’s best moments…Cynthia Sayer and her Joyride Quartet was a fresh breeze. Power banjo, very cool.”
— OFFBEAT MAGAZINE

The founding member of Woody Allen’s jazz band, who honed her virtuoso chops playing with many renowned artists, is known and beloved for her electrifying, swing-based performances featuring her distinctive style of jazz banjo, the guitar’s predecessor in jazz. Sayer’s vocals are divine and her banjo a driving force of nature – think Bela Fleck meets Django Reinhardt – as she delights audiences with an unexpected mix of hot jazz, Great American Songbook, vaudeville, tango, classical, and more.

Appearing with Sayer for “The Hot Jazz Banjo Show” will be DENNIS LICHTMAN on clarinet and violin, JARED ENGEL on string bass, and LARRY EAGLE on percussion.

“A dazzling evening, a capacity crowd… Nobody wanted it to end.”
— GUARDIAN NEWS (England)

“Cynthia Sayer almost made the applause meter explode … Her swingy playing catches you from the start, and her sense of showmanship is present at every second.”
— LA DÉPECHE (France)

“Cynthia Sayer has made her mark in the jazz world in an almost unheard of way, on banjo.”
—INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN MAGAZINE

7 THINGS YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BANJO:

  • The banjo evolved from gourd instruments brought over by Africans who were captured for slavery.
  • There are huge bass banjos, standing as tall as a string bass, overgrown-looking cello banjos, and even tiny piccolo banjos.
  • The banjo was wildly popular in jazz until about 1934, when the guitar came into fashion.
  • It was once commonplace for women to play banjo as parlor entertainment for their guests.
  • In the late 1800s, there was an effort to “elevate” the lowly image of the banjo by playing classical music on it.
  • Early banjo strings were often made from catgut – i.e. sheep or goat intestines, not kitties.
  • If you played in a banjo orchestra or banjo club in 1890, then you were extremely cool.

Record producer, jazz writer and broadcaster Bob Porter discusses his new book Soul Jazz: Jazz in the Black Community, 1945-1975, which complies a history of jazz in the back community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War.

Soul Jazz is a history of jazz and its reception in the black community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War. Previous histories reflect the perspective of an integrated America, yet the United States was a segregated country in 1945. The black audience had a very different take on the music and that is the perception explored in Soul Jazz.

Bob Porter is a record producer, writer and broadcaster in the fields of Jazz and Blues.  He has worked for such prominent record labels a Prestige, Savoy and Atlantic.  He has produced more than 175 albums and several hundred reissues.  He has contributed to DownBeat, JazzTimes, Jazz Journal (London) and currently writes a book review column for the Journal of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors.  He is a two-time Grammy winner, was awarded the Marion McPartland Award for Excellence in Jazz Broadcasting and is a member of the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.  He currently is the host of three separate radio programs on WBGO Newark.

Strykin’ Ahead

4 Stars Downbeat Nov. 2017

“….Overall, the album casts a warm, clear glow, with plenty of cohesive interplay between Stryker, organist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. While influenced by many guitarists, Stryker remains true to his own vision. Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell may be touchstones, but Stryker forges his own sound throughout.” – Martin Kasdan

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“Da Fonseca divulgues a keen awareness of where Brazilian Jazz has been and where it’s headed”
Todd Jenkins, DownBeat Magazine

“[Alves has] subtlety, musicianship and extraordinary improvisational facility…” “…outstanding capabilities as a melodic improviser…”
Robert L. Doerschuk, DownBeat Magazine

“Alves plays with a gravity and a stylistic flair that’s truly impressive.”
Phillip Van Vleck, Billboard Magazine

“Alves executes his feats with unhurried grace, even at very fast tempos. There is an aptitude that, if not exclusive of Brazil, has reached its highest expression there: the communication of a subtle energy embodying a life- affirming message that life is transitory.”
Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times Magazine

“Adnet’s voice is an emotionally powerful instrument capable of firmness or fragility, depending on the situation. When the tempo slows down and the lights are low, she reveals an attractive vocal wave—more a quiver than out-and-out vibrato—that heightens the intensity in her delivery; this level of directness and honesty transcends mere language when it appears.”
– Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Maucha and I have travelled the world with the Banda Nova since 1984. She is a marvelous singer. Her voice is deep, rich, mysterious. It makes me long for the Brazilian forest. Maucha is intelligent and comes from a very musical family. She is a good girl, wonderful woman, a great artist”

Musicians

Takaaki Otomo-Piano

Noriko Ueda-Bass,

Jared Schonig-Drums

Composer Bernard Hoffer first heard jazz pianist Takaaki Otomo at a restaurant in New York and was impressed by his musicality, dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense. With bass player Noriko Ueda and drummer Jared Schonig, Takaaki selected five originals, four jazz standards plus one Broadway show tune and two novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets for this recording. Beginning his training as a classical pianist Takaaki switched to jazz when he was a teenager and won first prize in a jazz competition in Japan in 2007. He moved to New York City in 2014. Originally from Japan Noriko Ueda began playing the electric bass, then switching to upright bass at age 18. She is a graduation of the Berklee College of Music where she majored in jazz composition. She has her own trio and quartet and has performed at the Blue Note Jazz Club. She won the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize in 2002. Hailing from Los Angeles, drummer Jared Schonig studied at Eastman where he won seven Downbeat Student Music Awards. A favorite among vocalists, Schonig tours with Grammy Award-winners Kurt Ellling and The New York Voices. He is in demand as a drummer for studio recordings and session work.

Born and raised in Kobe, Japan, Takaaki Otomo started the classical piano at the age of five. When he was 15 years old, he changed to jazz music, listening to the music of Oscar Peterson. He was taught by the pianist, Tadao Kitano, who is a famous music teacher in Kobe. In 2007, he won first prize in a jazz competition in Kobe. He belongs to the group Gingerbread Boys, which plays at a number of venues in Kansai area. In 2014, he moved to New York City.

He has released a number of CDs as a leader and sideman as well. In 2008 his first CD Nightmare was released with Otomo as leader. During his career in Japan, he has performed with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Lewis Nash.

He has been influenced by Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Fred Hersch and Brad Mehldau.

A pianist friend commented that only in New York can you find a local restaurant that serves elegant food and elegant jazz. It was in that venue that I first heard Takaaki play. Even on his abbreviated keyboard I could sense his musicality, his dynamic sensitivity, and beautiful harmonic sense.

That first night I thought this could make a fine trio recording with Noriko Ueda on bass. What I learned later, when he was on a grand piano, was his technical proficiency. To complete the trio Noriko introduced me to Jared Schonig, who as it turned out attended the same school (Eastman) as I did.

We selected five originals, four jazz standards, plus one Broadway show tune (Takaaki’s suggestion) and two Novelties from Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

The originals include two exquisite tunes by Takaaki, a beautiful LullWater by Noriko, and two of my tunes written for this project. I first heard them play Brubeck’s Your Own Sweet Way in the club and loved the way they played it. For an up tempo, Neil Hefti’s Repetition though we miss Charlie Parker’s great solo. I thought John Lewis’s Django deserved another hearing, and, because we needed something languid, Thad Jones’s lovely To You, which works quite well as a trio, though sans Thad’s beautiful orchestral textures.

At the time of putting this project together the film The Martian was a big hit in theaters, which gave me the idea to use Holst. What was interesting, was that Holst’s harmonies gave us a fresh aspect when used to play jazz upon them.

New CD

DownBeat Editors Pick January 2018

By Ed Enright

Steve Slagle dedicates each track on his new album to people, places and things that have served as sources of artistic inspiration during his five-decade career as a saxophonist/flutist, composer, educator, arranger and bandleader on the New York scene. Dedication starts with a kick as Slagle (on alto), pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Bill Stewart and percussionist Roman Diaz conjure the essence of Sonny Rollins on Slagle’s “Sun Song,” a summery blowing vehicle based on a buoyant calypso-like groove. Guitarist Dave Stryker, a frequent touring/recording collaborator with Slagle, joins the group on the angular and driving “Niner” (dedicated to bassist Steve Swallow), and five more tracks. Stryker’s presence on Dedication is deeply felt, notably on the Brazil-dedicated bossa nova tune “Triste Beleza” playing nylon-string acoustic, as well as on his own “Corazon” (dedicated to Joe Zawinul), a ballad that flows with resonant alto vibrato, shimmering brushes, simple bass line movement and rubato strums of cleanly amplified electric guitar. Other subjects of Slagle’s dedication include Jackie McLean (the conga-driven “Opener”), Wayne Shorter (his “Charcoal Blues”), painter Marc Chagall (the guitar/soprano sax dream “Watching Over”), Slagle’s daughter Sophia (the playful, odd-metered swinger “Sofi”) and swing itself (the uptempo romp “Major In Come”). It all adds up to an enjoyable and meaningful collection of fresh, straightahead jazz from some of the genre’s best—and most dedicated—practitioners.

Acclaimed classic jazz guitarist Vinny Raniolo celebrates the release of his new CD, Air Guitar, with April 27 concert at
Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Museum

With Air Guitar, his long-awaited debut album as a leader, stellar guitarist Vinny Raniolo displays his passion for early jazz and flying

Garden City, NY

Vinny Raniolo – Guitar, Elias Bailey – Bass

Virtuoso guitarist Vinny Raniolo has built a widespread global fan base, thanks to his engaging approach to early jazz, his regular appearances on PBS specials, and his collaborations with six-string giants including Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Tommy Emmanuel.

Vinny’s love of flying is just about on par with his devotion to music, and with the release of his brand-new CD, Air Guitar, the 6-string wizard and pilot has found a way to connect his two passions.

Air Guitar, Raniolo’s much-anticipated debut recording as a leader, features a cache of 15 classic tunes related to flying and the wild blue yonder, by composers ranging from Benny Goodman to John Denver. The selections travel from the birth of aviation (the 1910 rarity “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine”), through gypsy jazz (into the clouds with Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages”) to the easy swing of Jimmy Van Heusen (“Come Fly With Me”). Raniolo also delves into the Great American Songbook with classic tunes by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and more.

Though Air Guitar is Vinny’s first album as a leader, he’s far from a newcomer to jazz. The Nassau County guitarist got interested in jazz at age 16 after a teacher introduced him to to records by masters of jazz guitar such as Joe Pass, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Herb Ellis and others. Vinny fell in love with the music immediately and realized, “That’s what I want to do.” He began gigging as a teen, and his career really took off when he paired up with fellow guitarist Frank Vignola at age 22.

Since then, Vinny Raniolo has garnered widespread attention and praise from critics and fans alike for his playing with Four Generations of Guitar, Rhythm Future Quartet and other ensembles. He maintains a busy international touring schedule, and appears on numerous albums, including duos with Vignola, and as a sideman and a sought-out accompanist for singers. Vinny is also recognized as an educator and is the author of several instruction books.

As for his other obsession, Vinny grew up around pilots, flight instructors and planes, but the flying bug didn’t bite till recently. He was hooked from his first lesson, about three years ago; now the brilliant guitarist is also an instrument-rated pilot, currently working toward obtaining a commercial license.

The flying guitarist’s passions are more closely connected than they might seem. “My background in music definitely helps with my overall understanding. It’s learning another language, and there are a lot of crossover skills such as coordination and math,” Vinny points out. “ I think that in life we are always playing jazz: You are alert to the environment around you and quickly improvise based on your knowledge of the situation. Just like music, aviation is a lifelong study and takes a lot of dedication.”

The choice of concert venue is as special and as personal as the music: Audience members will have a chance to view a full exhibition of aviation history during a pre-concert cocktail hour, with hors d’œuvres, plus a cash bar.

Bassist Elias Bailey, an in-demand player who has performed and studied with many of the top names in jazz, joins Vinny on Air Guitar, and onstage at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum concert, as they celebrate the release of the new CD.

This special event takes place at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, April 27, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Fernando García Band:
Gusábara Puerto Rico – CD Release Concert
Dear friends,

We are writing to share some exciting news!

Puerto Rican drummer, composer, and bandleader plans to release his third album this year. It showcases his talents as a drummer and composer, as well as his ability to unite an amazing group of energetic musicians from the New York City Latin-Jazz scene. It also features the Grammy-nominated and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón.

“Puerto Rico native García organically blends folkloric Bomba rhythms and Latin jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. His simpático crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García’s third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO music.”

– Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

“Fernando has put together a very focused and cohesive recording, surrounded by a talented group of young musicians. The music is rhythmically inventive and extremely smart, built on the rock solid drumming by the leader. In all a very well rounded album, which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did.”

– Miguel Zenón

Something magical happens when outstanding jazz players ranging in age from their 20s to their 80s take to the stage and create common ground. That’s what you’ll experience at Highlights In Jazz’s upcoming “The Millennials Meet The Masters” concert, featuring saxophonists/clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Buster Williams, trombonist Steve Turre, and pianist Tardo Hammer.

For Highlights In Jazz founder Jack Kleinsinger, variety is the spice of concert production. He delights in bringing together musicians from different generations, genres and backgrounds. Kleinsinger aims for unusual pairings, treating the audience to something they’re not likely to hear in a club. “None of my lineups involve a working group. All-star jams are my stock-in-trade, and have been for 40-some-odd years,” he notes. While Kleinsinger has a roster of regulars he’s brought in since the early days of the Highlights In Jazz series, “We’ve made an effort to expand and bring in as many young artists as we can. There are so many wonderful players out there, it’s amazing.”

Scheduled to appear at the upcoming “The Millennials Meet The Masters” concert are:

Saxophonists/clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson: Hailed by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other august publications for their remarkable virtuosity, the identical Anderson twins began steeping themselves in classic jazz while still in elementary school. They  absorbed the styles and sounds of Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, and cite Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker as early influences. Since moving to the Big Apple, they’ve played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, and Wycliffe Gordon. In addition to releasing two albums as leaders, the Juilliard-trained twosome have appeared off-Broadway celebrating the music of Artie Shaw and the Dorsey Brothers.

Pianist Tardo Hammer: This native son of Queens, NY, has been part of the Big Apple jazz scene for almost four decades. He’s been the pianist of choice for Art Farmer, Annie Ross, Lionel Hampton, Clifford Jordan, Abbey Lincoln, Jon Hendricks and a host of other giants of the genre. Besides being an in-demand sideman and respected educator, Tardo Hammer has released a half dozen well-received albums as a leader.

Drummer Jimmy Cobb: The fact the he played on the timeless Miles Davis album Kind of Blue and Coltrane’s iconic Giant Steps would have been enough to guarantee Jimmy Cobb a space in the jazz pantheon. And then there was his work with Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, and his own bands, such as Cobb’s Mob. It’s no exaggeration to call Jimmy Cobb one of jazz’s reigning elder statesmen, and at age 89 he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He continues to teach master classes across the country and around the world. The veteran drummer gigs regularly, and he keeps sounding better and better, according to more than one critic.

Trumpeter Dominick Farinacci: A 21st century renaissance man, trumpeter Farinacci cites Louis Armstrong, Charlie Shavers and Clifford Brown among his earliest influences. Dominick has been a global ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center, explored the connection of music and wellness, delivered a TED talk, raised funds to help communities devastated by natural disasters, and garnered numerous awards and top honors at various trumpet competitions. This versatile musician is equally at home playing a Horace Silver jazz standard, a Tom Waits tune, or delving into material by the Gipsy Kings. Besides playing with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson, Dominick has released about a dozen recordings as a leader

Trombonist Steve Turre: You may recognize Bay Area-born Steve Turre from his long tenure in the Saturday Night Live band, but that’s only part of his story. Steve spent a year on the road with Ray Charles; was mentored by Woody Shaw, who brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and went on to play with Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, J.J. Johnson, Van Morrison, Max Roach, Tito Puente and many others across the musical spectrum. A stint with Rahsaan Roland Kirk along the way introduced Steve to the musical possibilities of playing seashells, creating melodies that equal the natural instruments in beauty. Steve has recorded as a leader with strings, shells, and in numerous other configurations, including his recent well-received album Colors for the Masters.

Bassist Buster Williams: An in-demand bassist since his teens, it might take less time to list the jazz giants Buster hasn’t played with. His first gigs were with Jimmy Heath, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, followed by stints with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chet Baker, Geri Allen, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Stan Getz and Mary Lou Williams, and a breath-taking array of others. Beloved by singers, Buster worked with Nancy Wilson for close to a decade, plus other greats including Betty Carter, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Nnenna Freelon, Etta James, and Roseanna Vitro, to name a few. Buster has also fronted his own band throughout his career, recording more than a dozen albums as a leader.

Listeners will want to keep an ear out for a special surprise guest, another Highlights In Jazz trademark. Spontaneity is a hallmark of jazz, and this concert series is no exception. The surprise guests at the very first Highlights In Jazz concert were guitarist Gene Bertoncini and clarinetist Phil Bodner. Sometimes special guests are added at the last minute: “Paquito D’Rivera showed up in the audience, and I gave him cab fare to go home to get his horn at intermission so he could sit in with the band,” Kleinsinger recalls with a laugh.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, this is the stuff that jazz fans’ dreams are made of.

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

You won’t want to miss a single concert of the 2018 season of Highlights In Jazz!

The Music of Lead Belly & more:
a blend of blues, jazz, folk with a focus on
the music of Lead Belly played by

The Lead Belly Project

Huddie William Ledbetter became the iconic figure, Lead Belly, in the music world during the first half of the 20th century. Although he played piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and diatonic accordion known as a windjammer, he was best known for his virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar. According to Dan McClenaghan of allthat jazz.com, “Lead Belly was one of the more polished of the delta blues artists, relatively speaking.”

Come to the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall, SUNY Orange, at 8pm on Friday, March 2, 2018 for
The Music of Lead Belly & more
played by drummer Adam Nussbaum, saxophonist Ohad Talmor, and the electric guitar tandem of Steve Cardenas and Nate Radley.

“An inspirational artist,” continues McClenaghan, “Lead Belly has found its way into jazz explorations often.”  The music of Lead Belly was one of Adam Nussbaum’s parents’ favorites. Consequently, he grew up listening to the music as they often played Lead Belly records. Nussbaum has carried the love of this music throughout his music career, and now finally decided to create the Lead Belly Project so that he can “use this music as a springboard to play…. It is simple and clear.”  Nussbaum is considered to be one of the finest jazz drummers. So, as jazz pianist/composer and SUNY Orange music professor Chris Parker states, “Adam Nussbaum is interpreting old Lead Belly tunes which inspired him as a child, through a jazz lens.” And, Nussbaum describes his three cohorts in the Project as “very gifted, forward thinking musicians with a firm grasp of the tradition who know how to listen, react and respond.”

So come for a memorable evening of “Good Night Irene,”  “Bring Me A Little Water, Sylvie,”  “Black Betty,”  “Grey Goose,” and “Green Corn” to name a few.

All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the box office beginning one hour before the concert, or online anytime at www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml
plus a $ 2.50 service charge for each online ticket. Free tickets for all students are available only at the box office.

EDITH LETTNER’S FREEMOTION

The first part of the evening will celebrate the release of TAKING OFF, the new album from Edith Lettner’s Freemotion. This is complex, enchanting music, each tune unlike the rest in emotional color and intensity, yet unmistakably bound together by some magical, musical braiding. It is music that would challenge any musician yet remains readily accessible and supremely enjoyable for music fans of all stripes.

     Gerhard Graml- bass
     Stephan Brodsky- drums

DELIGHT

A change-up happens in the second set as jazz greats Warren Smith, Leopoldo F. Fleming and Donald Smith join with Edith and Gerhard Graml in the aptly named band Delight, something it is guaranteed to do. All are seasoned musicians who know how to make great music and make their music great. Whether performing a  standard or a newly composed tune, they launch themselves into the groove, stay there and bring the audience all the way in with them.

EDITH LETTNER
alto & soprano saxophone & duduck

Edith Lettner is a seasoned, respected musician and composer. As to her preferred genres, the short answer is world music, jazz and improvised music. The real answer is any music that fascinates her enough – Middle Eastern, Senegalese, South African, Cameroonian, Congolese, Armenian, Afghan, Kurdish, improvisational music and, of course, interpretive Jazz, the more complex the better, be it contemporary, straight-ahead, free, or as-yet-to-be-defined.   And it is here that her primary interest and exceptional musicality lies, with jazz and improvisational music.

Her childhood was filled with music ranging from the much played and much discussed classical recordings at home, to the nightly gatherings of traditional folk music at a neighboring farmer’s, where not joining in the singing was “not an option”. Edith’s musical training began at the age of 6 with piano lessons, which she continued off -and-on for the next 13 years. Although she still composes exclusively on the piano, she knew early on that it was not her instrument, not one she felt passionate enough about to master.

Her love affair with the saxophone began some years later, a romance that has only grown stronger over the intervening years. Her training consisted of her own curriculum; as she describes it, “I like to put myself in the middle of things and learn from there”.Edith traveled, collaborated and learned from musicians all over the world. She has performed with Alex Blake, Leopoldo F. Fleming, Warren Smith, Steve Dalachinsky, Jed Distler, Yacouba Sissokho, Kim Clarke, Mandingo Ambassadors,  Ras Moshe Burnett, John Pietaro, Matt Lavelle among others. In 2010 she founded the African Jazz Spirit project in Senegal. She also pursued formal training with Leo Wright, Manfred Balasch and Uli Scherer in Vienna, and Oscar Noriega and Patience Higgins in New York. As to mastery? That question is quickly put to rest after hearing the first few bars of anything she plays. Then there is that intangible grail sought by all musicians – that ‘certain something’. In the words of J.F. O’Niel, “Lettner has it, and she has it in spades”.

For years she envisioned an open musical landscape within the jazz idiom for creative ideas without stylistic limitations. To that end, she formed Freemotion in 2005, her own ensemble of like-minded Viennese musicians. Her band’s newest CD, TAKING OFF, will be released early in 2018 in the US and Europe. To again quote O’Niel, “. . .and here I suggest to all who read this, take note – this is a breakthrough album by four exceptionally talented musicians, one folks will be talking about, be you jazz or improvised music connoisseur, or simply a fan of exciting, compelling music; get your hands on this album. You owe it to yourself”. (Five tracks on the album are Lettner’s compositions.)

Edith has traveled widely to play her music and learn from others. Born in Linz, Austria in 1964, at 17 she moved to Vienna, which became the principle base for her artistic pursuits. In 2011 she adapted New York as her second artistic home, and in 2017 she added Salt Spring Island in western Canada to the list. When not traveling to gigs in other locations, she divides her time between these three ‘homes’.

GERHARD FRANZ BUCHEGGER – piano

Buchegger studied classical and jazz piano at various conservatories and schools in Europe, completing a master class with Barry Harris. His focus, during his formal training, was on free improvisation and ‘new’ music. But like so many gifted musicians, he was, and still is, constantly on the lookout for new musical challenges. And he always manages to find them in a dizzying array of projects, in ever varied musical genres, such as LiLa, an Indian Jazz Project, Family Kuti Band, Franz Hautzinger, and the annual Austrian festival, “Jam In,” which he initiated. Never hesitant to travel to further his interests and hone his craft, he resided for a time in the worlds of Flamenco, Brazilian, and Indian music. Each equipped him with a new kit, opened new perceptions, and contributed to his fluid, shifting style, his keen ear and his eye-blink quick responses when collaborating and improvising. His home turf includes traditional jazz, world music and fusions of both, but he spends much time off the property, drawn to contemporary-concept improvisation and gigs with artists working in other mediums, such as dance, poetry and visual art. Gerhard has been with Freemotion since 2016 and is the newest and youngest member of the band. But you would never know it; the fit was immediate, a fact that is apparent to anyone who attends a Freemotion gig, or listens to the band’s new album Taking Off. (Two tracks on the album are Buchegger’s compositions.)

GERHARD GRAML – bass

Graml, born in 1963, studied at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna, graduating in 1992 with a degree in Jazz Bass and Music Education. Since then his considerable talent and style as a musician, and composer, has taken him into ever broadening musical landscapes. He is one of the original Freemotion members, having been with the band since its conception in 2005. He maintains a busy schedule as the bassist for Stephan Brodsky’s band phone 3 phone among many others, while at the same time composing and arranging for his own projects. He has written film scores, contributed to several CD-productions, and various TV and radio specials. Graml, who resides in Washington DC, travels widely, touring and performing in Europe, Nothern Africa and Asia. He has recorded and played with such diverse artists, as beat poet Ruth Weiss, the contemporary music ensemble, “die reihe” jazz artists Don Preston, Gary Wittner, Edith Lettner, Herb Pomeroy, Brad Terry, Tom Snow & many others. Gerhard’s musical style ranges through Jazz, Fusion, Funk and World Music. He also writes and edits for various music magazines & blogs and for a time hosted a jazz-themed radio program for the Austrian Broadcasting Network ORF. Clearly, Gerhard Graml is a man who wears many different hats as a music professional, but central to it all – what sustains and informs him – is this solitary fact; Gerhard Graml is a damn fine bass player of the highest caliber. (Three tracks on the TAKING OFF album are Graml’s compositions.)

STEPHAN BRODSKY – drums

Stephan Brodsky is a dyed-in-the-wool jazz man, and a self-proclaimed autodidact when it comes to developing his musical talent. As a teenager, he spent every spare minute out of school listening to jazz and learning from it, a habit he has carried with him through the years. His approach has served him well; Stephan’s talent & musicality range over the multifaceted jazz idiom right up to its edges and beyond. Big band, straight-ahead, cultural & ethnic fusions, contemporary styles, improvised & free jazz. As he continues to master his craft as a percussionist, he began to feel the absence of harmony in his music, so he learned to play Marimba; in 1993 he formed his band, phone 3 phone, centered around this instrument and his own compositions, as well as those of other band members. The band has recorded and produced 4 albums to date (2018). Stephan has toured extensively and played in clubs and festivals throughout Europe and in Morocco. He has played with Leo Wright, Igal Foni, Alan Praskin, Karl Ratzer, Samy Price, Uli Scherer, Ruth Weiss, Leopoldo F. Fleming, Luis Ribero, Vero La Reine, Cheikh Ndao. He has been the drummer in Edith Lettner’s Freemotion band from the beginning. If there are any questions about the efficacy of his self-directed approach to learning and developing his musical chops, they will be answered in full after listening to Freemotion’s new album of contemporary jazz, TAKING OFF. This is complex, enchanting music, each track different from the others in emotional colors and intensity, yet unmistakably bound together into a whole by some magical, musical braiding; it is music that would challenge any musician, and Stephan Brodsky nails it.

About the Musicians of Delight

DONALD SMITH – piano, vocals

The son of a member of the internationally known Harmonizing Four, the oldest living professional gospel group in the US, Donald attended school in Richmond, Virginia, and upon graduation attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in music. While he was a member, the campus jazz band won three national collegiate awards as the outstanding jazz band in the country. Individually, Donald won the national collegiate award for best male vocalist for two consecutive years.

In the Champaign-Urbana community Donald performed as organist and flautist with the renowned Tony Zamora Territorial Band. This group was well known in the Tri-State area, (Illinois, Indiana and Iowa), not only for their music, but also for the number of their musicians going on to become teachers and performers of American Classical Music worldwide.

As a pianist and vocalist, Donald has performed and recorded with many nationally and internationally known artists including: Art Blakey, Rashaan Roland Kirk, Benny Carter, Archie Shepp, Dizzy Gillespie, Jackie McLean, Leon Thomas, Pharoah Sanders, Oliver Lake, Von and Chico Freeman and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band. He was the lead vocalist and flautist with his brother, Lonnie Liston Smith, for five years. Donald toured and recorded together with Gregory Porter and Mansur Scott in Europe, as one of the three headliners of Paul Zauner’s legendary Great Voices of Harlem.

Donald was a favorite at the famous St. Nick’s Pub, appearing there regularly, until its untimely demise. A resident of Harlem, he continues to perform and remains active on the New York jazz scene.

LEOPOLDO F. FLEMING

percussionist, composer, arranger, lyricist

Born in 1939, Leopoldo spent his childhood in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, moving to New York in 1951. Inspired by his Latin-Afro-Indian roots, his decades on the New York jazz scene, and by his many years of world-wide touring, Leopoldo F. Fleming has cultivated both a rich and multicolored musical palette, and the virtuosity to use it to the fullest; a rare combination, quickly recognized by some of the biggest names in music.

He has played, recorded, toured with a cornucopia of great artists, such as Nina Simone, (for 31 years off and on), Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Monica Zetterlund,  Eartha Kitt, Randy Weston, Sonny Stitt, Archie Shepp, David Murray, Leon Thomas, Kenny Barron, Bob Cunningham, Queen Ester Marrow, Horace Parlan, The World Bass Violin Ensemble, Beaver Harris, Novella Nelson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Symphony of the New World, and many more; the list reads like a Who’s Who of the NY jazz scene. The list extends to prominent musicians in Europe as well with the likes of Christian Gonsior, Jim Pepper, Edith Lettner, Leo Wright, and Karl Ratzer, among others.

Never one to be daunted by the rigors of traveling, he collaborated with top musicians from many different countries as he toured throughout, Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Leopoldo now lives in New Jersey, not far from the Metro NY area. He continues to play with his band, Afro Caribbean Jazz Ensemble, to tour and remain active in NYC’s vibrant jazz scene.

WARREN SMITH – percussion

Smith was born May 14, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to a musical family. His father played saxophone and clarinet with Noble Sissle and Jimmie Noone, and his mother was a harpist and pianist. At the age of four Smith studied clarinet with his father. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1957, then received a master’s degree in percussion from the Manhattan School of Music in 1958.

One of his earliest major recording dates was with Miles Davis as a vibraphonist in 1957. He found work in Broadway pit bands in 1958, and also played with Gil Evans that year. In 1961 he co-founded the Composers Workshop Ensemble. In the 1960s & 1970s Smith accompanied Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Lloyd Price, and Nat King Cole, Sam Rivers,  Janis Joplin, King Curtis and Tony Williams. He was also a founding member of Max Roach’s percussion ensemble, M’Boom.

In the 1970s and 1980s Smith had a loft called Studio WIS that acted as a performing and recording space for many young New York jazz musicians, such as Wadada Leo Smith and Oliver Lake. Through the 1970s Smith played with Andrew White, Julius Hemphill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, and Carmen McRae. Other credits include extensive work with rock and pop musicians and time spent with Anthony Braxton, Charles Mingus, Henry Threadgill, Van Morrison, and Joe Zawinul. He continued to work on Broadway into the 1990s, and has performed with a number of classical ensembles.
Smith taught in the New York City public school system, at Third Street Settlement,  Adelphi University and at SUNY-Old Westbury.

Akira Tana & Otonowa Quartet

Drummer Akira Tana has a gilt-edged jazz pedigree: Harvard, the New England Conservatory and stints with Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Hubert Laws, and James Moody. He and bassist Rufus Reid have had a rich partnership – five CDs and touring to match. Otonowa Quartet brings Akira’s consummate musical mastery into congruence with his deep Japanese cultural roots. Otonowa, which means “sound circle”, was formed originally to showcase traditional Japanese songs and pop through jazz arrangements. 2011’s terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan became a crucible for Otonowa, which launched this brotherhood of Japanese-American jazz luminaries into a program of touring and recording to raise both funds and spirits for the survivors. Tickets & Info

The Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is dedicated to celebrating the compositions of classic and contemporary jazz women. In their swinging, entertaining, and witty performances, they present the work of composers and lyricists such as Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Peggy Lee, Abbey Lincoln, Patricia Barber, Nelly McKay and many more, as well as their own compositions and collaborations.

Vocalist MJ Territo, the ensemble’s founder, says, “One day I happened to notice that women had written quite a few of my favorite songs. And I began to notice common themes. Sure, there are love songs–love is one of the great subjects of song. But there are also songs about resilience and self-reliance; songs about the power and wonder of nature; songs that cross the borders of our wide world; songs of family and friendship.” Territo also thought it would be fun to play these tunes with a group of crackerjack female musicians, so she put together the band and they began to build a repertoire which is now more than fifty songs strong.

The quartet’s critically-acclaimed album, “Ladies Day” was released in August 2017 with a CD release celebration at Club Bonafide.

“MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing.” – Scott Yanow, Downbeat

“Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!” – C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz

Kiss from your fan,
Antonio Carlos Jobim

“a powerfully elegant statement of joy over shared musical discovery…I often imagined Omar Sosa lifted up to the Yoruban spirits in the form of a swarm of butterflies. Such is the beauty of his musical spirit.” – NPR

The celebrated 7-time Grammy-nominated Cuban pianist/composer/bandleader Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora (harp-lute) master/singer Seckou Keita are acclaimed musical adventurers with a rich heritage that spans jazz, Latin and African influences.  They are joined by Sosa’s longtime collaborator, Venezuelan percussion wizard Gustavo Ovalles, who encompasses the polyrhythmic sound of the African diaspora.  They will perform music from their acclaimed album on OTA Records, Transparent Water. Evocative of translucence and flowing light, it is a deeply spiritual recording full of serenity and a gentle elation with music that comes across as an antidote to the world in turmoil. The program at Roulette is part of their first national tour of Transparent Water.

Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today.  His musical trajectory traces the diaspora from Cuba to Africa and Brazil, from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities. Born in 1965 in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest inland city, he studied percussion and marimba at the music conservatory in Camagüey, piano at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música in Havana, and completed his formal education at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Among his influences, Omar cites traditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers (including Chopin, Bartok, and Satie), Monk, Coltrane, Parker, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés, and the pioneering Cuban jazz group Irakere. His extensive credits include Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, London’s Barbican and Queen Elizabeth Hall, Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and such festivals as Monterey Jazz, JVC Jazz, Montreal Jazz, Montreux Jazz, WOMAD and Cape Town International Jazz. Nominated seven times for a Grammy and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa entwines the expressive traditions of Africa and the Americas in a distinctive cosmopolitan voice, articulating a brilliant, joyous, and thoroughly contemporary global jazz idiom and creating a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC in 2003 for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States.

Seckou Keita is one of the most influential kora players of his generation, seated in tradition whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of his art. Growing up in the Casamance area of southern Senegal, he was a child prodigy born of a line of griots (praise singers and oral historians) and kings. He has graced the international stage since 1996, earning worldwide acclaim for his kora playing and appearing with such luminaries as Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, and Miriam Makeba. His current solo album, 22 Strings, explored what it means to be a modern global citizen, and yet to live with seven centuries of tradition and heritage expressed through music. The album won Best Album in the Africa and Middle East category in SonglinesMusic Awards 2016, and was recently selected as one of Simon Broughton’s Top Ten Kora Albums.

Gustavo Ovalles has worked with leading artists from the worlds of salsa and jazz and shared the folkloric music of his native Venezuela with world musicians.  After studying at the Caracas Conservatory, he turned to percussion and traditional Venezuelan dance, visited Venezuelan villages to find the roots of traditional music, and went to Havana to work with drum masters. He has participated in many jazz festivals, and appeared on prestigious stages from New York to Tokyo. Prior to Transparent Water, he worked on three projects with Omar Sosa: Sentir, Ayaguna, and Eggūn.

Made possible in part with public funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State legislature.

Performing music from Duke Ellington, Monk, Jobim, Mingus,Toninho Horta, Stanley Turrentine, Noel Rosa and much more music from the American and Brazilian song book.

All this mixed with exciting Brazilian and American rhythm combinations!

2009 Grammy nominee Nilson Matta has been a creative force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian Jazz in the United States. It was not long after he came to New York in 1985, that he was performing and recording with Grammy-winning jazz greats Kenny Barron and Joe Henderson, as well as Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz, Claudio Roditi, Paul Winter Mark Murphy , Slide Hampton, Paquito D’Rivera, Nancy Wilson and many more. Drawing from these collaborations, and from his work with Brazilian luminaries such as Hermeto Pascoal, Joao Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, and Johnny Alf in Brazil, (to name a few), Matta has developed his own musical signature making him a first-call bass player of Brazilian music and jazz musicians. It’s not surprising therefore, that when Yo Yo Ma sought band members for his Brazilian project, Nilson was the obvious choice for bass. Their recording of two Grammy CDs(ObrigadoBrazil and Brazil – Live in Concert) prompted a two-year worldwide touring every corner of the globe.

A founding member of internationally acclaimed group – Trio Da Paz. Matta has emerged in recent years as bandleader, composer, arranger and producer. In 2008, he released Walking With My Bass, an autobiographical CD incorporating special guests from his long and distinguished career. His next release, Nilson Matta’s Brazilian Voyage – Copacabana on Zoho Records takes the listener on a musical journey through Brazil’s diverse geographic regions–via Matta’s artful arranging of classics masterpieces (e.g.,VillaLobos), not to mention Matta’s original compositions such as Baden and Copacabana which have earned him wide acclaim as a composer.

February 12TH 2013 Nilson released on MOTEMA Records his 3rd CD as a leader “NILSON MATTA’S BLACK ORPHEUS” revisiting the music from the film 1958 and the play 1956.

Matta is committed to passing on his talents and experiences to the next generation of bassists. He is a member of the International Society of Bassists, making frequent appearances as a featured guest and performer at the ISB conventions.

He has taught at NYC’s Bass Collective, Litchfield Jazz Camp, and has conducted master classes worldwide. As Artistic Director of Samba Meets Jazz Workshops in Bar Harbor Maine (SmJ-Bar Harbor) and Samba Meets Jazz Workshops – Brazil (SmJ-Brazil), he has become a leading figure in promoting the music he is passionate about – Brazilian Jazz.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador

The 3-time GRAMMY® nominated drummer Duduka Da Fonseca will be releasing what he considers to be one of the most expressive works of his career playing the compositions of the legendary pianist Dom Salvador with his Brazilian based Trio, featuring pianist David Feldman and bassist Guto Wirtti.

Coming Out On April 13th

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awarness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.”
Todd Jenkins, Down Beat

“Da Fonseca embodies the pulse of a Brazilian Samba School with a full-set reverie, a percussive wall of sound that seems to come at you from all angles”
Ken Micallef, Modern Drummer Magazine

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays  with uncommon mix of finesse and drive.”
Mark Holston, Jazziz

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
THE NEW YORKER

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”

Billy Hart

The merging of Brazilian music and American jazz changed the trajectory of modern music. The inceptions of bossa nova, samba jazz, and other fusions enable Brazil to make its mark on jazz and beyond, via some incredible musicians and composers, including the legendary Dom Salvador. The remarkable pianist and his classic trios, which blended samba and jazz, made an impression on many during the mid-1960s, including a young Duduka Da Fonseca.

Fonseca’s initial exposure to Salvador’s music came as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro. The budding drummer could hear Salvador’s original trio rehearsing, featuring bassist Sergio Barrozo and drummer Edison Machado, while walking to school. When the group released their seminal recording, Rio 65 Trio, Fonseca was completely spellbound by the music and practiced along to the record religiously, forever engraining Salvador’s music into his psyche.

Though he had met Salvador briefly in Rio, Fonseca didn’t have a chance to play regularly with his idol until 1980. Having been in New York City for five years, Fonseca had played with a who’s who of modern jazz legends, so when Salvador’s drummer wasn’t available, the pianist called Fonseca to fill in. Fonseca surprised Salvador by knowing Salvador’s repertoire backwards and forwards, thus cementing a bond that led to years of playing and touring together.

Salvador and Fonseca played regularly during the 1980s in a quartet that also featured saxophonist Dick Oatts and bassist Dennis Irwin. Their collaborations have continued to this day. In 2015, Fonseca’s relationship with Salvador came full circle when he was asked to play Machado’s parts on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rio 65 Trio recording at Carnegie Hall.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador was born from the leader’s love of Salvador and his music and Fonseca’s effort to make a proper tribute to his friend and mentor. The featured trio was born of a 2000 meeting with pianist David Feldman, who was studying then at the New School in New York, and with whom Fonseca recorded with later in 2009 in Brazil, where he also met the trio’s bassist, Guto Wirtti.

In the efforts to make the best recording and present Salvador’s music in the best light, Fonseca reached out to Salvador for lead sheets for his compositions. Feldman also took time to consult Salvador and learn the repertoire from its source, removing any doubts about structural and interpretive nuances. Many of Salvador’s songs seem simple but have difficult elements, most notably in the rhythmic combinations.

Fonseca traveled to Brazil three times: the first to rehearse the music, the second to record over two days, and the third to mix and master. The trio aimed to make the recording as natural as possible, eventually using many first or second takes.

The recording begins with a tune from that inspiring Rio 65 Trio album, “Farjuto,” a breezy composition whose title comes from dated Rio musician slang. ironically meaning “not so good.” The modal of groove of “Transition” is augmented by a variety of rhythms emanating from the Northeastern provinces of Brazil. The haunting “María” is a minimalistic ballad named for Salvador’s wife of 50 years, which the trio molded in the spirit of Keith Jarrett’s memorable take of “It’s Easy To Remember.” The ensemble performs “Antes Da Chuva” in a looser fashion than the Salvador original, while the straight samba of “Samba Do Malandrinho” is bouncy and smart, apropos to its rascally namesake. The sly “Temátrio” is a grooving composition that emerged from Salvador’s second trio around 1966.

The title of “Gafieira” refers to an old Rio tradition of a ballroom dance incorporating some acrobatic elements, the difficult composition prancing along in a brilliant display of melodic and rhythmic complexity. Salvador’s beautiful ballad “Para Elis” is a dedication to the pianist’s former employer, the iconic singer Elis Regina, and finds the trio augmented by the great cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Performed and recorded as a samba, “Valsa De Esquina” was originally composed as a Brazilian waltz by Salvador, so the trio transformed it into a Bill Evans-esque jazz waltz. The upbeat “Clauditi” is a tribute to a great friend and collaborator, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and features rhythmic elements of samba and the pre-samba maxixe. Perhaps Salvador’s most famous composition, “Meu Fraco é Café Forte” (or “My Weakness Is Strong Coffee”) utilizes an intriguing arrangement by Wirtti that introduces the melody in half time before speeding it up.

Duduka Da Fonseca and his wonderful trio of David Feldman and Guto Wirtti pay tribute to Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador on the enchanting Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador by highlighting the composer’s brilliant music but also giving it new life with new contemporary arrangements.

The Les Paul Festival is presented by the Ramapo College Music Program, the Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts, the School of Contemporary Arts, the student-run Ramapo Music Club, and the Mahwah Museum.

Mike Stern is regarded as one of the true guitar greats to a generation of contemporary jazz guitar aficionados. A player of remarkable facility, his searing lines are informed mainly by bebop and the blues while also carrying a rock-tinged intensity. Stern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early 1980s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then he has released 17 recordings as a leader, six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards.  His latest album is titled “Trip.”  Stern has also played with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jaco Pastorius, Michael and Randy Brecker, Eric Johnson, Bela Fleck, and numerous other major jazz musicians.  Stern was presented with Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award in 2012. Ramapo College is thrilled and honored to have Mike Stern headline the 7th Les Paul Festival, during which he will also provide a workshop for Ramapo music students.

He also leads his own group performing a mixture of Jazz standards and original music. Richie has been a member of the jazz faculty at Purchase College Conservatory of Music SUNY since 2000. He has also taught at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program.

Bassist Teymur Phell moved to New York in 2011 and has since built a reputation as a vibrant and virtuosic player. He has performed with Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Danielia Cotton, Alex Young, Leni Stern, Kevin Salem, Lafayette Harris, and Oz Noy.

Nilson Matta, a bassist best known for his work with Trio da Paz, presides over a flexible ensemble dedicated to the music of his native Brazil. Matta has developed his own musical signature making him a first-call bass player of Brazilian music and jazz musicians.  Therefore, it’s not surprising that when Yo Yo Ma sought band members for his Brazilian project, Nilson was the obvious choice for bass. A founding member of two internationally acclaimed groups – Trio Da Paz (Romero Lubambo, Duduka de Fonseca, drums) and Brazilian Trio (Helio Alves, piano; Duduka de Fonseca, drums) – Matta has emerged in recent years as bandleader, composer, arranger and producer. See Nilson Matta’s Samba Meets Jazz with Fabiana Masili, vocals, Helio Alves, piano, Marcello Pellitteri, drums and  featuring guitarist Dave Stryker (Fri.) and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander (Sat.) on Feb. 23 & 24 at 7 & 9 pm both nights!

Sunday Evening Jazz Series!

Listen to Randy Cohen’s Interview with Jack Kleinsinger

During his 45 years producing the concert series Highlights in Jazz, he has gotten to know many brilliant musicians. Dizzy Gillespie once came by the house and played for his cat. But is jazz, if not dead then relegated to a museum piece? The future of an art form: at BMCC-Tribeca Performing Arts Center with music from Nicki Denner and Anton Denner, both very much alive.

About the Musicians of Freemotion

Her training consisted of her own curriculum; as she describes it, “I like to put myself in the middle of things and learn from there”. Edith traveled, collaborated and learned from musicians all over the world.

Gerhard B at the keyboardGERHARD FRANZ BUCHEGGER – piano

Gerhard Graml with upright bassGERHARD GRAML – bass

Stephan Brodsky at drum setSTEPHAN BRODSKY – drums

Donald Smith at the piano singingDONALD SMITH – piano, vocals

Leopoldo Fleming at drum set

LEOPOLDO F. FLEMING

percussionist, composer, arranger, lyricist

Warren Smith next to drumsWARREN SMITH – percussion

Abby London-Crawford proudly presents an evening with two jazz ensembles, Edith Lettner’s Freemotion  and Delight, in association with the Sanctuary Arts Initiative of Metro Baptist Church. Ms. London-Crawford, an officer of the Hell’s Kitchen Cultural Center, Inc. helped produced its annual “Rhythm in the Kitchen” Music Festival in the same neighborhood for over 10 years. On February 16, 2018 Ms. London-Crawford produced The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble at Metro Baptist Church featuring Lucy Blanco, Mario E. Sprouse, Julian Meyers, Andy Ordonez, Gary “Wicked” Fritz, Hilliard Greene, Luisa Bastidas, Mariano Martinez, and Maryam Abdul-Qawiyy.

Abby London-Crawford helped produce two documentaries on musicians: “Femmes de Jazz,” directed by Gilles Corre, filmed in NYC for European Television, which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival September, 2001; and “Night Bird Song, The Incandescent Life of Thomas Chapin,” directed by Stephanie J. Castillo in 2016. The DVD of that film will be released March 20, 2018.

“The Hudson Jazz Festival has been a long time in the making! I first moved to Germantown in 1971 and I became a contributor to the Hudson Opera House (now Hudson Hall) when it opened in 1992. And here we are in 2018, and I’m proud to support the Hudson Jazz Festival because it enriches our community and makes it a better place to live.” – Sonny Rollins

Hudson, NY – January 12, 2018:  Hudson Hall is proud to announce the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival (HJF), Friday February 16, Saturday February 17 and Sunday February 18, 2018, at Hudson Hall’s historic 1855 theater. Curated by noted Hudson-based jazz pianist, Armen Donelian, the festival highlights talent with musical influences that span the globe.

“I see this festival as a rare opportunity both to raise regional jazz awareness as well as to reward loyal jazz fans with a first-rate presentation”, says Donelian. “We are extremely proud to grace this beautiful venue with an exceptional lineup of world-class performers. Sit back and enjoy this cross-section of today’s amazing jazz talent, from emerging artists to established jazz masters.”

The festival kicks off with international flair on Friday evening, February 16, 2018 with the entrancing sounds of The Ara Dinkjian Quartet, an instrumental collaboration rooted in Turkish, Armenian and Macedonian Roma music headed by world-renowned oud player Ara Dinkjian and featuring award-winning clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski. Armen Donelian opens for the quartet with a solo piano set of Armenian-inspired romances from his Sunnyside EP, Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors.

On Saturday, February 17 at 7pm, one of a kind jazz matriarch Sheila Jordan and vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger Dominique Eade bring their world-class talent to the Hudson Hall stage, following an afternoon of jazz solo piano immersion with 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, hitting the keys ahead of critically acclaimed NYC jazz scene favorite, Aaron Goldberg and young lion James Francies at 3pm. Festival audiences can then catch a free screening of director Stephanie Castillo’s award-winning portrait of the life and premature loss of a great American jazz talent, Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song (2016) at 5:00pm.

Students are invited to a multi-generational hands-on jazz improvisation workshop on Sunday morning at 11am taught by pianist Armen Donelian and saxophonist Marc Mommaas, co-founders of Hudson Jazzworks. The festival then comes to a fiery close at 3pm with the wild and spontaneous Quarteto Moderno. Infusing Brazilian samba with contemporary jazz and chamber music, the quartet is led by guitarist and musicologist, Richard Boukas, and features clarinetist Lucas Pino, bassist Gustavo Amarante, and drummer Muricio Zottarelli.

Hudson Hall is located at 327 Warren Street, Hudson, NY. Tickets start at $25, with festival Weekend Passes available for $90, which includes priority entry and seating to every performance and event. Online ticket purchases can be made at hudsonhall.org, or by calling (518) 822-1438.

Armen Donelian: Songs Of My Ancestors
Armen Donelian, piano

A king of the keys performs the ‘King of Songs’. “A pianist with a crystalline touch” (the New York Times), Armen Donelian delves into his roots with his “beautifully elusive” (Downbeat) arrangements of poetic works by the 18th century Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova, whose name means ‘King of Songs’ in Persian. A professor for 32 years at the New School College of the Performing Arts, 2002 Fulbright Scholar and a widely-read author, Donelian has performed alongside jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker and Lionel Hampton and is the curator of the inaugural Hudson Jazz Festival.

The Ara Dinkjian Quartet featuring Ismail Lumanovski
Ara Dinkjian, oud
Ismail Lumanovski, clarinet
Pablo Vergara, keyboard
Engin Gunaydin, percussion

Not bound by a single tradition, The Ara Dinkjian Quartet encompasses the dance beat of the Balkans alongside elements of jazz, rock and classical music. Composed of four extraordinary musicians, the quartet features “brilliant and fearless…clarinetist” (the New York Times) Ismail Lumanovski, keyboard player Pablo Vergara, percussionist Engin Gunaydin and leader Ara Dinkjian, one of the world’s top oud players and founder of the groundbreaking instrumental groups Night Ark and The Secret Trio.

SOLO PIANO SUMMIT: 2018 NEA Jazz Master JoAnne Brackeen, Aaron Goldberg and James Francies
Saturday, February 17 at 3pm

Tickets: $25

For lovers of jazz piano, a rare chance to hear three great soloists in one afternoon. 2018 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award winner, JoAnne Brackeen is widely considered one of the “most celebrated jazz pianists of all time” (the Boston Globe), while Aaron Goldberg has made his name as one of jazz’s most compelling young pianists with his “quick witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic,” both as a bandleader and collaborator with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Guillermo Klein. Also joining this afternoon of unadulterated jazz piano immersion is young pianist/composer James Francies (24 Seven Artist Development), whose inquisitive mind, synesthesia (the ability to hear in colors) and distinct melodic styling has seen him tour internationally with Jeff “Tain” Watts, Chris Dave and Drumhedz and appear with The Roots, Nas, Jadakiss, and Raekwon (Wu Tang Clan) during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend.

SCREENING: Thomas Chapin, Night Bird Song
Directed by Stephanie Castillo (2016, 97min)
Saturday, February 17 at 5pm

Free. Reservations at hudsonhall.org

Thomas Chapin was described by the New York Times as “one of the more exuberant saxophonists and bandleaders… one of the few to exist in both the worlds of the ‘downtown’ experimentalist scene and mainstream jazz.” Already a virtuoso, Chapin was nearing the pinnacle of his meteoric rise when leukemia claimed him at the age of 40 in 1998. This award-winning documentary draws an intimate portrait of this musical explorer who challenged stylistic boundaries and dissolved distinctions between sound and music. Director Stephanie Castillo will be in attendance.

TAKE TWO: Sheila Jordan and Dominique Eade
Saturday, February 17 at 7pm

Tickets: $35
Sheila Jordan, vocals, with Cameron Brown, bass
Dominique Eade, vocals, with Armen Donelian, piano

The legendary Charlie Parker often introduced vocalist Sheila Jordan as “the singer with the million dollar ears” – and she’s got a priceless voice to match. Like Billie Holiday, Jordan’s voice resembles a saxophone improvising on a melody, highlighted by her unique bebop and scat jazz singing style that has earned her praise as “[o]ne of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers” (Scott Yanow). Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania’s coal-mining country, Jordan began singing as a child and by the time she was in her early teens she was working professionally in Detroit clubs. She moved to New York City in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that she made her first recordings, including The Outer View with George Russell, which featured a famous 10-minute version of You Are my Sunshine. She “reigns indisputably as mellow mistress of any jazz club she visits” (Downbeat) and has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2012 NEA Jazz Master. Jordan is followed by the “impossibly versatile” (the New York Times Magazine) vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger, Dominique Eade. Signed to RCA in 1996, Eade recorded two critically acclaimed albums with RCA, When the Wind Was Cool with Benny Golson, Fred Hersch, James Genus, Matt Wilson, and many others, and The Long Way Home with Dave Holland and Victor Lewis. She later released an album of duets, Open, in the fall of 2006. Jordan is accompanied by bassist Cameron Brown, and Eade is joined on stage by pianist and 2018 HJF curator, Armen Donelian.

Quarteto Moderno
Sunday, February 18 at 3pm

Tickets: $25
Richard Boukas, guitar/vocals/composer
Gustavo Amarente, bass
Lucas Pino, woodwinds
Mauricio Zottarelli, drums

Led by multi-faceted guitarist, vocalist, composer, educator, musicologist and four-time NEA Jazz Performance Fellow Richard Boukas, Quarteto Moderno synergizes traditional Brazilian genres like samba and baião with a rich melodic and harmonic vocabulary drawn from contemporary jazz and chamber music. This innovative group offers fiery, spontaneous interactions driven by daring improvisations and perpetual rhythmic explorations. Their debut album, Live! Ao Vivo!, was recorded at The New School for the Performing Arts where Boukas has taught since 1995 and showcases ten of his compositions, each a tribute to a legendary Brazilian musician. Lucas Pino is a virtuoso of the saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet, whose recordings include Yellow Flower With Snail (Port Fenix), and No Net Nonet (Origin). A Brazilian native, bassist Gustavo Amarente quickly established himself in the US as first-call sideman for icons like Gato Barbieri, Toninho Horta, Duduka Da Fonseca and Hendrik Meurkens, and performs at major venues including Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall. Brazilian drummer Mauricio Zottarelli completes the quartet, and is the drummer of choice for Eliane Elias, Paquito D’Rivera, Ivan Lins and other stars.
